Speaking of accidents, there's nothing like sliding down the pavement behind
your BMW motorcycle at 45 MPH. Fortunately, I was wearing full leathers and
I rode the machine home.

Oh, I still ride today and I still wear full riding gear even in the hottest
months.

Well, by this time I almost can't remember being without the 'reminders'. I
once counted 14 sets of scars, but most have faded pretty well with time -
or been replaced with others. I really have no complaints. When I came to
my senses two weeks later I spent a day or so feeling sorry for myself, the
got hit with the thought of those who died, and of mom. Whenever we faced
some tough times I could remember her taking stock of things, then saying,
Well, we'll get through this somehow. That pretty much kicked me out of
focusing on what I had lost and onto what came next. I learned to walk
again, finished my degree, then graduate school and my post-graduate degree

I thought of that after I sent the post - the fact that he was probably
using it for work.
I have a lot less qualms with folks driving trucks if they actually
 need
them most of the time.

So my gripe may be applied to the other millions of Americans who
 derive
their toughness from their pickup.

My favorite was the ad campaign that actually came right out and told
 us
that if we drive their super duper big truck, we're tough.

Red Wing shoe's ad that states: As tough as the guys that wear them
 is
more tolerable. But the driving of a large vehicle requiring toughness?
Heck, I think driving a small vehicle takes toughness.

[MBZ] OT: Cheap Hosting

2008-02-11 Thread dave walton
Can anyone recommend a cheap web and email hosting provider that does
not totally suck? Something in the $30/month range that a company
who wants a web presence but does not actually do anything online
could use? 99.9% uptime would be fine - that's 8-9 hours of downtime

I would not want to be the test subject.

Talking about safety and accidents, I get a kick out the friends who
state that they would never ride something as dangerous as a motorcycle.
But the same friends will charge 80 MPH down the interstate in a steel
box, with less than a 1/2 second reaction time between them and a car in
any direction, all while eating a hamburger talking on a cell phone.

And here I am on two wheels, also going 80 MPH down the interstate,

They were working on a vest that would inflate which I think carried a
 CO2
canister much like an air gun. If I remember, you were tethered to the
 bike
with a cord, much like a seadoo, and if you left the bike and pulled out

[MBZ] WAY OT (sorry): 2 year old neutered male Siberian Husky looking for good home

My two German Shepherds (the gestapo) have for 6 months now (since we got
Nanook the Husky) delighted in beating the snot out of our dear, fluffly,
friendly, loving Husky. Since we need the Shepherds as guard dogs (we live in
the hood) we are looking for a home for Nanook where he will be happier. He
is a very nice dog and if we did not have/need scary German Shepherds, we
would not remotely consider giving him up. If you are interested, let me know.
He is perfectly house trained and very loving. He needs a fenced yard or he
will run away - that's how huskies are - they run and run and run. OR he would
be content to be a house dog (especially in the summer - he is not a big fan
of heat), but would need to be walked daily. He is a really great dog.

Hey Ed, agree completely --
We had a 78 Malibu with the 305 engine and that engine was flawless. The
car went thru transmissions like they were MMs but the engine was perfect.
Often I wish I'd been able to keep the engine when we donated the car to the
Kidney Fdn - w/bad tranny of course. Would have loved to put that engine in
a Cobra replica -

But the engine started perfectly, cruised at 80 day long - though not with
the chassis/suspension sweetness a MB has - and was easy to maintain. Even
though it was a gas engine it didn;t need all that much.

Chev
Caprice models. They would usually have either a 305 or a 350. I asked
 how
many miles they typically get out of a car, and he said they tend to drive
them to about 750,000 kms, with very little if any work, other than just
routines service, and lots of brake and tire changes. I just love my old
merc and 911's, but I don't think they've ever built a better engine than
the small block chev V8. It's simple, light, gobs of torque and power,

they last forever. I still miss fiddling with my old 350, not that it

Re: [MBZ] Early 70s 200Ds, 220Ds

2008-02-11 Thread Curt Raymond

When I first got my bike my FIL gave me a leather MA motorcycle patrolman's
jacket. Sadly its about 2 too short in the arms. Apparently I'm built a bit
like a gorilla.

Anyway I find my Joe Rocket (Comet I think) jacket to be plenty warm with the
liner in. The wind doesn't get through it. If I were planning to make long
rides in the cold I'd have a touring bike (like the '96 BMW beckoning me at the
shop) and a heated vest.

My Joe Rocket coat has big heavy leather pads in the elbows, shoulders and low
spine. Seems like good protection while still being surprisingly comfortable.

They make a perforated jacket for hot summer riding I've considered, they
aren't expensive.

Joe Rocket is good stuff - just remember to zip the two pieces
 together.

The best winter protection is a good leather bomber jacket, leather
 gloves,
chaps boots but you have to look hard to find a good leather jacket.
 The
manufacturers have figured out how to make a jacket made from thin
 leather
feel very heavy.

Good denim does slide well but good denim is hard to find these days
 because
even the major brands have gone to lighter fabric. Also, denim does not
protect as well as leather. You can buy kevlar reinforced denim riding
 pants
and jackets but they are expensive.

Oh, when I went on my last slide, I had scrapes:
On my helmet
On the left shoulder, side arm of my bomber jacket
On my left glove
On the left leg of my chaps
On the side of my left boot

It was a November crash. If it had been summer then I would have tested
 my
Joe Rocket gear.

I threw away the helmet because they are only good for one impact and I
still wear the rest.

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave

Do a rolling oil change if you want to, but.

A friend of mine used the same theory in his 1973 Olds Omega. He owned
the car since new and he'd always change the filter top off the oil.

At about 60,000 miles, he started the engine in his driveway and it went
knock, knock, knock, knock, knock and then it stopped. The engine was
locked up.

He pulled the dipstick it read full. I came over that weekend and we
started to pull the engine. I unscrewed the drain plug nothing came
out! Went back to the dip stick it read full!

We went ahead pulled the engine. I pulled the pan it was full of
hard sludge, with a small depression for the end of the dip stick
another larger depression for the oil pump pickup.

I figured the engine had been running on about one quart of oil for a
long, long time.

What was amazing was how little oil an oil change took with my old 350.
Geez, I swear it took just enough to fill the filter, and an extra quart
 or
two, and not much more. lol When I did my first oil change on an old
 air
cooled 911, I was convinced, after pouring the 10th litre in, I had
 made a
mistake and was pouring the oil in the gas tank rather than the oil
 tank.

after the new seals were installed.
Apart from that, the motor only got accessory things like a starter
 and an
 alternator and a recored radiator.
Nothing internal and I didn't run Mobil 1 either. I don't know much
 about
its early life as it had over 100K miles
when I got it in July 1991. It hauled that boat of a Suburban body

too bad on fuel by today's standards. It was the last year with a 4

setup. The 700R4 transmission, on the other hand was not good. The
interior was not bad either. I had the bottom
part of the front bench seat repadded when the foam got too soft and I
felt like I was leaning toward the door. The
cloth on the seats was fine. I had the body fixed and painted once. It
came from Texas and being red over tan, was
a bit faded. By 2000 rust was starting on the door bottoms but the
 rest of
the body was still pretty good. I still
sort of miss it. I sold it to a fellow who planned to fix it up for
 the
long haul. I should check to see if he
 still has it.

 Hey Ed, agree completely --
We had a 78 Malibu with the 305 engine and that engine was flawless.
 The
car went thru transmissions like they were MMs but the engine was
 perfect.
Often I wish I'd been able to keep the engine when we donated the car
 to
 the
Kidney Fdn - w/bad tranny of course. Would have loved to put that
 engine
 in
 a Cobra replica -

But the engine started perfectly, cruised at 80 day long - though not
 with
the chassis/suspension sweetness a MB has - and was easy to
 maintain. Even
though it was a gas engine it didn;t need all that much.

Joe Rocket is good stuff - just remember to zip the

The best winter protection is a good leather bomber
 jacket, leather gloves,
chaps boots but you have to look hard to find a
 good leather jacket. The
manufacturers have figured out how to make a jacket
 made from thin leather
 feel very heavy.

Good denim does slide well but good denim is hard to
 find these days because
even the major brands have gone to lighter fabric.
 Also, denim does not
protect as well as leather. You can buy kevlar
 reinforced denim riding pants
and jackets but they are expensive.

Oh, when I went on my last slide, I had scrapes:
 On my helmet
On the left shoulder, side arm of my bomber jacket
 On my left glove
On the left leg of my chaps
On the side of my left boot

It was a November crash. If it had been summer then
 I would have tested my
 Joe Rocket gear.

I threw away the helmet because they are only good
 for one impact and I
 still wear the rest.

When I did my BRC for my endorsement, there was a
young guy in the class who had a Joe Rocket mesh
jacket with all the Kevlar pads. Since it was June
and already 90F+ by 7:00 AM, leather was damned
uncomfortable to be wearing. he let me try out his
jacket, and I was really impressed. Enough that I
bought one the next week and use it whenever the
temperature is about 80F or so. Makes the hot Florida
days a little more bearable on the bike, and still
affords good protection.

Denim is not ideal, as it will tear quite easily.
When I ride to work I wear leather chaps, not only for
protection, but to keep the road crap off my pants.

All my leather is H-D motorclothes, so it's HEAVY. My
main riding jacket weighs in at about 15 pounds with
the liner and winter stuff snapped on it.

Wear it all day and your shoulders feel sore.

I still own a 1977 Vette with a 350. The oil capacity is 4 quarts with a

What was amazing was how little oil an oil change took with my old 350.
Geez, I swear it took just enough to fill the filter, and an extra quart
or
two, and not much more. lol When I did my first oil change on an old
air
cooled 911, I was convinced, after pouring the 10th litre in, I had
made a
mistake and was pouring the oil in the gas tank rather than the oil
tank.

We had a 78 Malibu with the 305 engine and that engine was flawless.

Often I wish I'd been able to keep the engine when we donated the car

Yes, though I have related it a year or so ago. I was a student at
Lynchburg College [great school, BTW] and was heading to DC in 1971 in my
'62 220Sb to visit an old roommate. I was going into an 'S' curve at 2:30
AM in the pouring down rain. A Camero was coming out of the curve and all
 I
remember [for the next two weeks] is saying 'that car is going too fast'
 ...
A trucker who saw the wreck in his mirrors said it was a Keystone Cop sort
of image with both cars going up and then smashing down. I would estimate
my speed at 50 when she hit me, and there were 14' of skid marks behind
 my
car, none at all from hers, and she was going a good deal faster. My car
stopped at the scene and hers took a bounce. At that time they did not do
blood alcohol levels on corpses, but she was driving her boyfriends car
 with
her brand new driver's license, and speeding in the rain at 2:30 AM on a
curving 2 lane after leaving a party. She was either drunk or terminally
stupid. My car did not have the lap belts installed [long story], which
would have killed me from the angle of impact, but the flat MB steering
wheel prevented any internal injuries. I think with a full modern
 restraint
and airbag system I would not have been seriously injured. The top of the
wheel hit me at tooth level and took all of them out as well as my lower
 jaw
[they found and refitted 4 of 5 pieces and most all of the teeth], and
 also
caused a C-2/3 spinal break [C-2/3 controls the heart and breathing I
 think,
which is why I believe hitting at an angle with a lap belt would have been
worse than hitting straight on without one]. My right knee took out an
add-on AC unit, cutting the knee almost through and sending my smashed
 femur
into daylight [well, not daylight at 2:30 AM]. Multiple compound
 fractures,
some closed ones, and cuts all over. I had an opportunity to see the car
three months later when I got out of the hospital and didn't recognize it

I was chatting with a taxi driver a few years back when most were using Chev
Caprice models. They would usually have either a 305 or a 350. I asked how
many miles they typically get out of a car, and he said they tend to drive
them to about 750,000 kms, with very little if any work, other than just
routines service, and lots of brake and tire changes. I just love my old
merc and 911's, but I don't think they've ever built a better engine than
the small block chev V8. It's simple, light, gobs of torque and power, and
they last forever. I still miss fiddling with my old 350, not that it every
needed much of anything.

They were working on a vest that would inflate which I think carried a CO2
canister much like an air gun. If I remember, you were tethered to the bike
with a cord, much like a seadoo, and if you left the bike and pulled out the
cord, the vent would inflate. Not sure if such a thing went into
production. I know a few companies were also working on air bags for
frontal impacts.

If you want a (Linux) server that you can administer, you can check
out OpenHosting (http://www.openhosting.com/home). Their pricing
is as low as $19.95/month, depending on usage and bandwidth consumed.
I've had a server there for a couple of months and have had no
problems, their support (via email) is very responsive.

They are virtual servers running CentOS (clone of Red Hat Enterprise
AS).

If you want strictly a web site and email service, sorry I have no
experience with any. The nice thing about having a complete server is
you can run whatever you need on it -- the downside is that you need
to know or be willing to learn some Linux administration (though they
have a Webmin control panel that makes the basic stuff pretty easy).

Why are these lines covered with fabric and can you use
non-fabric covered lines and expect them to last as long?

I believe Marshall explained that the fabric cover allowed the
line to fail softly. That is, it would weep to let you know

Talking about safety and accidents, I get a kick out the
friends who state that they would never ride something as
dangerous as a motorcycle. But the same friends will charge 80
MPH down the interstate in a steel box, with less than a 1/2
second reaction time between them and a car in any direction,
all while eating a hamburger talking on a cell phone.

And here I am on two wheels, also going 80 MPH down the
interstate, paying close attention to those around me always
 looking for an escape route.

 So, which is more dangerous?

Imagine how scary they would be on two wheels!!

Re: [MBZ] Early 70s 200Ds, 220Ds

2008-02-11 Thread Tom Hargrave
Joe Rocket is good stuff - just remember to zip the two pieces together.

The best winter protection is a good leather bomber jacket, leather gloves,
chaps boots but you have to look hard to find a good leather jacket. The
manufacturers have figured out how to make a jacket made from thin leather
feel very heavy.

Good denim does slide well but good denim is hard to find these days because
even the major brands have gone to lighter fabric. Also, denim does not
protect as well as leather. You can buy kevlar reinforced denim riding pants
and jackets but they are expensive.

Oh, when I went on my last slide, I had scrapes:
On my helmet
On the left shoulder, side arm of my bomber jacket
On my left glove
On the left leg of my chaps
On the side of my left boot

It was a November crash. If it had been summer then I would have tested my
Joe Rocket gear.

I threw away the helmet because they are only good for one impact and I
still wear the rest.

I need to buy pants, I really like my Joe Rocket kevlar coat, much cooler

Yes, that more parts at better prices link is not something that ANYONE
looking for parts would click on, especially when their other option is online
catalogue. Tell Hursty to get on with it!

What caught my attention in the eBay shop (I wasn't even LOOKING for seat
covers, actually I was checking the going rate on a used hydraulic compensator,
of which there were none listed) was the relatively low price, as I have seen
other leather sets for upwards of $3500.

I've ordered stuff from Rusty before (even managed to talk him into sending
stuff to Canada!) and will happily do so again when the time comes.

Wish I hadn't done that. I miss that car. Get this, the dealer that took it

wealthy people or something. At least that's the story I was given when I
asked what would happen to her.

I could drive that car, and I kid you not, with my left leg out the window

What was amazing was how little oil an oil change took with my old 350.
Geez, I swear it took just enough to fill the filter, and an extra quart
 or
two, and not much more. lol When I did my first oil change on an old
 air
cooled 911, I was convinced, after pouring the 10th litre in, I had
 made a
mistake and was pouring the oil in the gas tank rather than the oil
 tank.

  Hey Ed, agree completely --
We had a 78 Malibu with the 305 engine and that engine was flawless.
 The
car went thru transmissions like they were MMs but the engine was
  perfect.
Often I wish I'd been able to keep the engine when we donated the car
 to
  the

 engine

But the engine started perfectly, cruised at 80 day long - though not

  maintain. Even
though it was a gas engine it didn;t need all that much.

2008-02-11 Thread E M
Alex, I'm not up on the latest offering from GM, but I'm pretty sure much of
the old V8 still lives on in models available today. As with all engines,
things are refined over the years, giving better mileage and emissions.
Some of the current V8s give great fuel mileage given the performance. Fuel
delivery systems have been updated over the years, a lot of what made the V8
great is still there. I think Vortec engines, or the introduction of the
name was to help more easily identify the size of the engine in metric. Eg,
A Vortec 5700 is 5.7 litres, so it made doing the math by looking at the
engine name easy. I think the base corvette, (not chevette, hee hee) still
uses the pushrod engine. Not sure about the current gen of ZR1. Whatever
GM call it, I'd feel pretty confident buying a GM V8. Fuel economy may not
be that great, but you have to take into consideration what your bolting it
into and the weight you're asking it to pull. My old 350 with a mild cam
and small carb gave great torque and amazing fuel economy, but it might have
been a little thirstier had it been bolted into something like a 600SWB. hee
hee.

about the new engines reliability- or design-wise.)

solutions would be strategically placed bags on special clothing worn by

I just make a paste of Tide, and let it sit over night, then scrub the
following day with a hand brush. Works well if the oil hasn't really

Re: [MBZ] Beaver/Otters

2008-02-11 Thread barry Stark
Well, I never had the opportunity to ride in an Otter or Beaver but I'm
racking up some serious time in the cabin of Twin Otters. My department does
a lot of work designing and testing prototype sensors and we very often use
Twin Otters, with a big hole in the belly to look down from, as our test
platform. I know they are not quite the same as the singles but man are
their big brothers ever the ultimate work horse. You can pile almost
anything in the cabin at almost any station and those planes just shrug it
off. Truly impressive utility airplanes. Not only that you can slow flight
while taking data if required. We use Twin Otter International out of
Colorado and Las Vegas for our rides. Scott Siebold has about 17 of these
great planes. He runs Scenic Airlines for lookie lou flights over the Grand
Canyon with most of them and the other 6 or 7 he uses for a mix of smoke
jumpers during the fire season or research and aerial survey the rest of the
year. Take a look at the research ships at his web site www.twinotter.com to
see the kind of things we stuff into and fly in these birds.

itself was
fine. Something totally cool about lumbering along at 1000 ft with fixed
 landing gear.

All of Kenmore's Beavers and Otters are on floats. If they pick one up for
rebuild on wheels, they barge them from Renton Airport which is at the other
end
of Lake Washington. On Canadian fishing charters, Campbell River for
example,
I've seen some BIG salmon pulled out of the float storage compartments.

 Rusty,

You need a search tool like this, only for Mercedes body, trim and
interior parts by category instead of beer stuff.

I have asked Gary a few hundred times to do that. If you look at our
 site
now and click on more parts at better prices it posts it there. Gary
 seems
to think that is sufficient, I don't. In the mean time, I guess we'll
continue to lose valuable business. Perhaps Gary is reading this.

It would be great if your website actually reflected the full depth of

 parts
and equipment you offered, rather than just the WorldPac stuff. That
 could
help remove any lingering ambiguities whatsoever...just a thought

I would not want to be the test subject.

Talking about safety and accidents, I get a kick out the friends who
state that they would never ride something as dangerous as a motorcycle.
But the same friends will charge 80 MPH down the interstate in a steel
box, with less than a 1/2 second reaction time between them and a car in
any direction, all while eating a hamburger talking on a cell phone.

And here I am on two wheels, also going 80 MPH down the interstate,
paying close attention to those around me always looking for an escape
route.

So, which is more dangerous?

They were working on a vest that would inflate which I think carried a
CO2
canister much like an air gun. If I remember, you were tethered to the
bike
with a cord, much like a seadoo, and if you left the bike and pulled out
the
cord, the vent would inflate. Not sure if such a thing went into
production. I know a few companies were also working on air bags for
frontal impacts.

could
also be a manual trigger the rider could pull that would inflate all
