Re: [MBZ] GPS?

2015-09-09 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I have an old Garman that was becoming increasingly unable to lock onto
the satellites to get a position fix. Google showed this to a rather
common problem for that model, and I found a tutorial or a utuber vid
that showed how to solder a jumper on the circuit board to fix it. I
did that and it worked better for awhile but then started acting up
again. I finally just bought a new one and this one works fine but it
keeps annoying me about the maps. I think it is not under the free map
update program, I haven't tried, I never remember to bring the thing in
from the truck to fool with it.

I'd say spend the $100 on a new one and be done with it.

That does not, but the low price along with the sob story identify (are
consistent with) a scam.

Maos questions still apply:

Is it realistic that an AF guy less than a major or light bird could
afford this wagon?

WHy not take it to AK?
Etc.

These things along with the low price and sob story confirm it is a scam

I encountered one of these sob stories several years ago. It was some
woman being shipped off to desert areas, etc etc, advertised the vehicle
in gufpo't (and other places) but when you inquired and asked to see it,
it was in WA. (yeah, right...) Several other answers to questions didn't
add up. I played "her " for a while with email, then "she" stopped
answering questions. "She" had figured out we both knew it was a scam.

I used a bulletin board push pin to pick the plugs out, removed the screws,

For myself.. it was worth the $10 and a little effort to save it. Even came

Methinks the use of the word lie in respect to a resting body is archaic.
In the common vernacular, "lie" is anything coming out of the mouth of a
clinton or a lawyer (which encompasses most politicians)

(Whew, I think I'll go lay down)

After all the dictionary is a record of how a word has been used, not how

Locally there is a white 300TD, blue interior, approximately 225k miles, some
rust. Asking price is $3k (reduced from $5k).

I wouldn't pay anything over $1k for it, but don't let that stop you.

Contact me for seller's info. For some reason the seller is not advertising
anywhere, just has it parked with a sign next to the street.

SLS is pretty simple. Most complex part is the dual pump on some.
It is supposedly not rebuildable, but Q got a kit for me and I
rebuilt the one I had that was leaking. new seals and it worked

Hail damage is a body mans nightmare.

Likely, if it had full coverage insurance [unlikely, due to the age of the
car, few if any insurers would even write a full converge policy] it would
be written off as a "total".

Yet... a $6,000 price is being put on it?

Forget the car.. spend the $6K on what ever drug the guy is on.. Return on
Investment for that would be way better since it apparently causes total
disconnect from reality..

Re: [MBZ] Gasoline in eyes burns

2015-09-09 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Simple #2 lead pencil is my friend when working live fuel lines. The taper
point slips right in all fuel lines up to 3/8th inch and makes a nice tight
plug with minimal loss of fuel while making the plug action.

If you have a larger line, use a kids fat pencil same result..

Insert sharpened end of pencil with a slight twisting motion to seat into
the rubber ID and it seals, no leaks..

When replacing complete hoses from a live tank, pre-cut the replacement
hose, plug one end with the pencil, remove the securing clamp from the tank
outlet and work that end of the hose to "almost off". Place the new hose
with plug in place in easy reach and remove the old hose while slipping
your thumb over the outlet fitting then present the new hose to the
fitting as you slide you thumb off. You should be able to capture the inner
edge of the new hose and slide it on far enough to stop any loss of fuel
and not lose more than a few drops.

Naturally, wear surgical gloves and full eye protection.. no smoking .. etc
etc..

If you don't have a selection of Hemostats [blood vessel clamps used in
surgery] get come.. Clamp the new line mid point, remove the pencil..
install on receiving fuel pipe.. don't forget the hose clamps before you do
this.. The pencil plug will let you slide the tank hose clamp over it
nicely...

Be safe.. vent the area.. no sparks, water heaters, sources of ignition..
gas vapors are extremely volatile.

Great price!

I really don't like the looks of a W140 in anything other than silver.
They just look like a big fat 124, a little gross to me, especially the
trunk. If the trunk/rear end were a little longer I think a W140 might
look a lot better.

Unlike Dan and Clay, I do like the W220 looks, and haven't seen a color
that I don't like yet.

[MBZ] Gasoline in eyes burns

2015-09-09 Thread clay via Mercedes
I woke this morning to an overwhelming stench of petrol. Bedroom on the third
floor of the home, garage at the bottom.

I ran down to see if the neighbors had decided to torch my house. Turns out
the rear flex fuel hose had perished and was piddling on the garage floor.

This is not a good sign, so I open the door and back the car out into the
driveway to get a better look. Roll Froggy up on the ramps and see the line is
original and soaked, the fuel drooling along the hard line and piddling on the
ground. I can either tackle this myself, or have my indy swap it out in five
minutes. I figure it is worth the Jackson to have him tackle it, so I give
them a call.

No answer, and it is shop hours. Maybe the receptionist is piddling her own
self. Fire up Froggy and drive the three miles to the shop. They are gone
until mid month. DANG! Looks like I am going to have to do this my own self.

FLAP has a vast selection of sizes, and I did not know just how fat a hose I
need, so I guesstimate that it is .025" id. Head back home and put her on the
ramps again. Pull out the needle nose clamping things and seal off the line so
I can undo the hardline side. While unscrewing the hose clamp, the hose fails
and dribbles fuel on me. I put another plier clamp on and it stops

Until the tank side line fails as well and now it is coming out in earnest.
Eating my gloves while I am trying to cap the dang thing off. I had already
cut a length of hose and had clamps on it, but I have to get the dead hose off
so I can install the new hose. All the while petrol is flowing down my arms
and onto the underside bits of the car, such that it gets past my safety
glasses and into my eyes.

While my eyes are burning, I yank off my gloves and make a wad of them, slap
that onto the nipple spewing fuel all over and clamp it with the pliers. Strip
off my shirt and jacket and run into the house to the closest sink so I can
flush my skin and eyes. After a few minutes of cool water running over
eyeball, I can see again, but keep on flushing. I fetch a new shirt and head
back under the car.

It turns out the .025" id is a bit too tight to go over the hard lines, and the
gloves are beginning to dissolve. Fuel is now piddling again and I scamper
around looking for another object to plug the flow. I got nothing. I figure
I will just stopper it with more fresh glove and clamp it, hoping it holds long
enough to get to FLAPS and back with a more proper hose. I grab the dead hose
as an example so I do not have to guess.

Back from FLAPS, I cut an appropriate length of hose and set clamps on it. The
wad of shop glove is holding well and I am able to seat the one end of the new
hose to the hard line. Tank side, there is still a 0.5" section of dead hose
stuck on the nipple. Much head scratching ensues while I contemplate just how
much fuel may spew while I remove said obstruction and then struggle to hook up
the new hose. I could try to toss a bucket or such under, but from the spread
of fuel all up on the suspension, I would need a kiddie pool size bucket.
Decide that a kitty litter barrier downstream will have to suffice. Mix it
with garden dirt for a fair dam, and plunge ahead.

I lost about a quart of petrol while getting the nipple clear and the new hose
on and clamped securely. No fuel in my eyes, but much on the flesh, even
with gloves on. No more dribbles from the fuel lines, which is desired result.
Use a small yard sprayer with water in it to hose off the petrol from the
underside of the car. Then gather up my dam of litter and mud into a bucket
and take it to my fire pit to dump.

I have an idiot neighbor. He was let go from M$ and now works as an Amazon
slave. He thinks he is the smartest thing on the planet. I think him a moron.
He sees me dumping the dirt and inquires if I am going to be burning dirt now.
I tell him it is dragon poop, toss a match on it and watch his eyes grow big.

My TomTom XXL cooks its battery. I suspect it just has overvoltage protection
instead of a real smart charge circuit.
One time last winter I left it plugged in for a couple of days and now the
3 year old battery is totally useless instead of mostly useless (life had
dwindled to about 30 minutes before the last overcharging, now it's less than
ten minutes, was 2-3 hours when new).

I woke this morning to an overwhelming stench of petrol. Bedroom on the
third floor of the home, garage at the bottom.

I ran down to see if the neighbors had decided to torch my house. Turns
out the rear flex fuel hose had perished and was piddling on the garage
floor.

This is not a good sign, so I open the door and back the car out into the
driveway to get a better look. Roll Froggy up on the ramps and see the
line is original and soaked, the fuel drooling along the hard line and
piddling on the ground. I can either tackle this myself, or have my indy
swap it out in five minutes. I figure it is worth the Jackson to have him
tackle it, so I give them a call.

No answer, and it is shop hours. Maybe the receptionist is piddling her
own self. Fire up Froggy and drive the three miles to the shop. They are
gone until mid month. DANG! Looks like I am going to have to do this my
own self.

FLAP has a vast selection of sizes, and I did not know just how fat a hose
I need, so I guesstimate that it is .025" id. Head back home and put her
on the ramps again. Pull out the needle nose clamping things and seal off
the line so I can undo the hardline side. While unscrewing the hose
clamp, the hose fails and dribbles fuel on me. I put another plier clamp
on and it stops

Until the tank side line fails as well and now it is coming out in
earnest. Eating my gloves while I am trying to cap the dang thing off. I
had already cut a length of hose and had clamps on it, but I have to get
the dead hose off so I can install the new hose. All the while petrol is
flowing down my arms and onto the underside bits of the car, such that it
gets past my safety glasses and into my eyes.

While my eyes are burning, I yank off my gloves and make a wad of them,
slap that onto the nipple spewing fuel all over and clamp it with the
pliers. Strip off my shirt and jacket and run into the house to the
closest sink so I can flush my skin and eyes. After a few minutes of cool
water running over eyeball, I can see again, but keep on flushing. I
fetch a new shirt and head back under the car.

It turns out the .025" id is a bit too tight to go over the hard lines,
and the gloves are beginning to dissolve. Fuel is now piddling again and
I scamper around looking for another object to plug the flow. I got
nothing. I figure I will just stopper it with more fresh glove and clamp
it, hoping it holds long enough to get to FLAPS and back with a more
proper hose. I grab the dead hose as an example so I do not have to
guess.

Back from FLAPS, I cut an appropriate length of hose and set clamps on it.
The wad of shop glove is holding well and I am able to seat the one end of
the new hose to the hard line. Tank side, there is still a 0.5" section
of dead hose stuck on the nipple. Much head scratching ensues while I
contemplate just how much fuel may spew while I remove said obstruction
and then struggle to hook up the new hose. I could try to toss a bucket
or such under, but from the spread of fuel all up on the suspension, I
would need a kiddie pool size bucket. Decide that a kitty litter barrier
downstream will have to suffice. Mix it with garden dirt for a fair dam,
and plunge ahead.

I lost about a quart of petrol while getting the nipple clear and the new
hose on and clamped securely. No fuel in my eyes, but much on the
flesh, even with gloves on. No more dribbles from the fuel lines, which
is desired result. Use a small yard sprayer with water in it to hose off
the petrol from the underside of the car. Then gather up my dam of litter
and mud into a bucket and take it to my fire pit to dump.

I have an idiot neighbor. He was let go from M$ and now works as an
Amazon slave. He thinks he is the smartest thing on the planet. I think
him a moron. He sees me dumping the dirt and inquires if I am going to be
burning dirt now. I tell him it is dragon poop, toss a match on it and
watch his eyes grow big.

Re: [MBZ] GPS?

2015-09-09 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
It's been my experience with rechargeable batteries that as they reach
their cycle limits, their ability to take a charge declines, thus the
charging circuit tries to "push charge" ... and the battery fails to hold
it, so the conflict between the dying battery and the over worked charger
presents a "no win" for either one.

I would suggest a new battery is an easy fix, before it also "cooks the
charge circuit".

Re: [MBZ] Gasoline in eyes burns

2015-09-09 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

Yes, the father of some folks that I went to school with was a mechanic.
He went under a car with a trouble light and gasoline was dripping. It
hit the trouble light and ignited.
He was badly burned and it likely would have been worse if there had not
been someone there who grabbed him by his legs and pulled him out from
under the car.

Wow, that could have ended much worse; glad it didn't!
