If the W126 is anything like my W123 and W116 models, the centre vents only
emit air when cooling, NOT when heating. So it makes sense that as the interior
temperature approaches the target that the centre vents would emit air to begin
to balance the interior temperatures.

Nothing to with what you're trying to figure out here, but I would also mention
that unplugging the aux water pump (the unfused one that burns out and takes
the pushbutton unit with) is a good idea. It's mostly unnecessary and see above

Iffy compressor operation can also be a slipping belt, which kicks out
the KLIMA til restart -- easy enough to check, cycle the keyswitch and
it will come back for a while.

Sadly, this can also be a bad compressor dragging when it's hot, I've
had that happen to me. Easy change if you can find a good one, but
get a filter put into the suction side hose if you replace it.

Center vent is probably a vacuum issue, make sure you don't have a
leak in something else up in the engine compartment that prevents full
vac at the supply for the ACC. Also check the switchover valves and
associated elbows.

A shot of contact cleaner into the temp control wheel rheostat can
work wonders too.

Verify that all the temp sensors are good -- a bad on at the
evaporator that goes open when cold will shut the AC off too.

Subject: [MBZ] Type III ACC Questions

As I get the 350SDL sorted out, I'm starting to turn towards the ACC
system. It works, sort of, but has some quirks that I know are not right.

I'll be doing some research in the next couple of days to learn what I
can but I figured I would toss things out here in the hope that maybe
someone might recognize some of these and have some input. So here's
what's going on:

The good:

Fan speeds seem to be good and somewhat temperature dependent. If the
temp is set low and it's hot, you get high fan speed until things cool
down, which is what it should be doing. Same in reverse with heat.

The various modes sort of work correctly for the most part (more on this
later.). Heat comes out the floor, defrost out the top of the dash.

AC is charged and has proper pressures. Definitely gets cold.

The not so good:

Center vents are weird. They do work, but rarely. They only seem to come
on during transitions when the system is close to the desired
temperature. For example, when you want full cold, you get defroster
vents, not center vents. When the system has almost reached the desired
temperature, the center vents kick in. I think this is important to note
since I realize that the system default is defrost - the center vents do
work, just not for a lot of the time.

The aspirator fan wasn't working and the thermistor in the ceiling grille
was filthy. It has been cleaned and I have the aspirator fan working.

When the AC is run, it comes on and makes plenty of cold. But - once the
compressor cycles off the first time, it doesn't come back on until the
car is shut off. So you get cold until it cools down, then you get
ambient air - the compressor never comes back on.

The PO threw an evaporator temperature switch at the car, which they
claim fixed the problem. It doesn't appear that's the case.

So, to summarize:

Center vents are wonky
AC compressor won't cycle back on

I'm all ears, folks. I know the Gen 1 ACC system, but the later system is
a bit more complex and not something I'm familiar with.

Thanks,

Dan

ACC panel has been inspected and verified to be in good operating order - I
checked it last weekend. Interestingly, the Gen 2 W126 models have a slightly
redesigned ACC controller that eliminated the right angle joints that were

Re: [MBZ] Type III ACC Questions

2016-03-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I really don’t think I have any leaks. I drove home tonight from the mother
in-law’s, which is about 50 miles, mostly interstate, and I was able to get the
system to change state based on he temperature setting. The closer the cabin
temperature was to the setting, the more the center vents worked.

I would think if it was leaking it would be less predictable. Maybe not,
that’s just the logic I’m working off of.

Now let’s throw a wrench in the proverbial gears:

So I get off the interstate and have about seven miles on surface streets to
get home. As I pull up to a stop light, both my ABS and SRS lights come on.
Shoot.

As I get closer to home, the radio cuts out. Then it comes on again. Then it
cuts out.

Hmm.

Headlights look really dim. Really dim.

Make the dash home with everything electrical turned off that I can think of.
Pull into to the driveway, pop the hood, put a meter on the battery while the
engine is running.

10.1 volts. Not good. Alternator has taken a dump.

Go inside, check with Advance Auto, they have a Carquest rebuilt in stock five
minutes away. Have the youngster take me down there after I enter an order
online with a 40% off coupon. get the rebuilt alternator, get back to the
ranch. Change clothes, grab a quick snack since my last meal was lunch
(Indian, yum!) and then head out to the garage.

Start to finish: 40 minutes.

So I’m wondering if the electrical system issues could have affected the
compressor. However, I turned the AC on and off several times on my trip home
with the temperature set all the way to “Cold” and every time I did it the
compressor came on and it got cold - real cold.

Kaleb - is the center vent vacuum pod one that has two sources of vacuum, or
just one?

Diesels ROCK, guys! Had I been driving a vergasser I would have been stranded
at the side of the road.

As I get the 350SDL sorted out, I'm starting to turn towards the ACC
system. It works, sort of, but has some quirks that I know are not right.

I'll be doing some research in the next couple of days to learn what I can
but I figured I would toss things out here in the hope that maybe someone
might recognize some of these and have some input. So here's what's going
on:

The good:

Fan speeds seem to be good and somewhat temperature dependent. If the temp
is set low and it's hot, you get high fan speed until things cool down,
which is what it should be doing.

They only seem to come
on during transitions when the system is close to the desired temperature.
For example, when you want full cold, you get defroster vents, not center
vents. When the system has almost reached the desired temperature, the
center vents kick in. I think this is important to note since I realize
that the system default is defrost - the center vents do work, just not
for a lot of the time.

So you get cold until it cools down, then you get ambient
air - the compressor never comes back on.

The PO threw an evaporator temperature switch at the car, which they claim
fixed the problem. It doesn't appear that's the case.

So, to summarize:

Center vents are wonky
AC compressor won't cycle back on

I'm all ears, folks. I know the Gen 1 ACC system, but the later system is
a bit more complex and not something I'm familiar with.

Thanks,

Dan

Re: [MBZ] OT - Southern iced tea

2016-03-08 Thread clay via Mercedes
Funny as heck, #1 boy would make all manner of odious remarks at me when I
would brew up a pitcher of sweet tea. Dad used to love is, being from Texas,
but mom was a little less willing to allow that indulgence.

We had promised to take #1 boy to DC and visit the Atlantic states when he was
10. He would not touch the stuff until we stayed a week in Charleston. By the
time we hit the Tragic Kingdom, he was asking for jugs of store bought. That
devolved to those giant cans of tea. From then on he demanded that I make him
pitchers of the stuff. He would suck down a whole half gallon daily.

I guess "hot" is relative -
The first hot should have been tea.

[MBZ] Seducing the baby sitter

2016-03-08 Thread clay via Mercedes

I was getting that feeling about this car. The burning desire to do something
really stupid that will bite you in the rear. I made the plan and headed out
this morning to place a bid. There was a PnP on the way that had a CL post
with a R107 that needed attention. Classic cars galore, and a boat load of
VW. Dude at the counter even gives you a stub with row # address for your
car.

There were three benz. A totaled w210, a w123 300D, and the 107. I pulled a
Becker Europa cassette out of the w123. It fires up. Figure I put it on the
fleabay. The 107 had been hit already. I think it had been sitting somewhere
for ages, as the top was shredded and the inside was very wet. Previous
vulture was really polite. He did not destroy anything in removal, piled the
bundts in the trunk and covered up the engine after he removed the hood.\\

I had hoped to get lights, the seat shiny trim, door cards, and the fuel pump
set up. 1973, so compatible with my SL. I ended up getting the Dizzy with
trigger points, MAP sensor, some wire bits, and the console controls. This
time I was able to pull the AC control without busting the pig tail. The panel
was also in much better condition than mine, bamboo. I cleaned that up and put
a coat of paint to match my interior. My current center console is aged and a
bit trashed from idiots trying to install radios. There is a repainted console
just waiting to go in. Maybe summer. When I can keep the car outside for more
than a half hour with the top down.

Re: [MBZ] Type III ACC Questions

2016-03-08 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Here are your problems. You have vacuum leaks somewhere. Could be the center
vent element or could be be other places in the system. Sounds like it
sometimes pulls enough vacuum to open the vent. As far as compressor goes that
is the classic clutch issue. The sensor in the compressor senses it slipping
and shuts it off. You can get shims I believe to tighten it up but otherwise
replace compressor clutch.

New! I've never gotten a used radiator that was any good (out of perhaps
three - I'm a slow learner). If a radiator was in a car that had the green
coolant run through it, it's trash.

made in China means nothing. The Chinese build to the specs they're given.
If good specs, you'll get a good product. All those Apple products that
many people worship are made in China . . .

Oh thats how its gonna be huh?
I say you fill the glass halfway with ice and the rest of the way with
tea. You don't pollute it with sugar. If tea isn't good enough for you
then you ought to just drink sugar water.

BTW, I call Southern iced tea, "Momma's iced tea." Ya fill the glass with
ice, then ya fill the voids with Momma's sweet tea, and as the ice melts,
ya

gotta replace it, which may provide more voids to be filled with Momma's
tea. Far superior to that warm spit served up Nawth. ;<)

Yes, whenever I get the chance? Must keep the ice-to-tea ratio high in
mine, too, or it's exceedingly "sub-par."
Dawncha want some?

Some company called Nissens has a corner on the market.  It's either one of

Seems pricey, although Autohaus sells one for $190.

No, no, no . . . You fill a pitcher (or glass) with ice cubes (or the

Re: [MBZ] Conclusion to broken 606 belt shock tap

2016-03-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Good to know, Wilton.

Mine has never been noisy, but when I was doing a close inspection of the
engine the other day I noticed the lower shock bushing was degraded enough that
it was rotating due to normal engine vibration. I could watch it and see the
rubber bushing turning ever so slowly.

The spring is an odd part. When I removed mine I was amazed to find that it is
really a combination of several parts, a couple of hooks and the spring itself.
I initially thought it might be broken when I first removed it.

Looks like a replacement isn't too bad from the dealer, around $46.00 list.

Re: [MBZ] Conclusion to broken 606 belt shock tap

2016-03-08 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
Do you know that those belt tensioner springs can break under normal usage?
At about 200 kmi my '91 350SDL was getting noisy at the tensioner mechanism.
I opened the hood one day prepared to replace the "typical" noisy damper and
found that part of the spring was missing! It had broken, and about half of
it had fallen away to join the many tons of rubber, screws, bolts, nuts,
springs, belts, brackets, mufflers, exhaust pipes, glass, chairs,
mattresses, bottles, cans, food wrappers, kitchen sinks and much other
detritus littering or roads and streets.

WILTON. IS. THE. MAN.

Just swapped my belt tensioner shock. Even with taking pictures it took
me less than 10 minutes to do.

Thanks a bunch, Wilton!

ATTABOY!

The easiest is to get under and look at the linkage bushings, it will be
clear if none are there or they are broken. When the bushings on one
of my SDs went the shift lever was pretty loose (lose), a symptom you
don't seem to have but easy to check underneath anyway. Then look as
Gerry suggests at the various mounts to make sure nothing is collapsed
or missing or broken. I know nothing about the adjustment.

The linkage bushings are a bit fiddly to replace but they are cheap, and
probably should be checked/replaced anyway if you are messing with the
transmission.

mounts and/or transmission mount might possibly have shifted the
engine/transmission enough that reverse does not engage.

Sometimes you can see an engine/transmission shift just by looking at the fan
which should be parallel to, and centered to the radiator.
The car can be driven with no indication of problems even though the
engine/transmission may be shifted/mis-aligned.

Yes the deterrent effect is correlated much more strongly with likelihood
of getting caught than with severity of punishment.
