As always, a good resoldering with perhaps a replacement capacitor or two

I would add that my bus had a 1200cc mill in it, and it would go for
what seemed like weeks on a tank of gas. No gauge, just the sump. Knob
in the center console as I recall. Engine started to sputter, pull out
the knob and you were good for another 30-40 miles or more.

Had a cool overhead console, too. Originally there was an air duct
there to send air from under the roof at the front of the cab to the
passenger area. I took the cover off this and put some gauges and a
stereo up there.

Peace, man.

I ended up knocking $100 off just so I did not have to deal with any further

Now keep in mind I just put a brand new set of Michelins on it as well as brand
new ac with new Denso compressor. Probably close in value to what I sold it
for. When I did the work I figured people would appreciate and recognize a well
properly maintained vehicle bit I guess the M class crowd is just looking for a
cheap car. I probably should have pulled the tires off and Put the old work out
tires back on. So anyway a couple of days ago the guy ca
lls up saying it runs and drives great but has the most uncomfortable seats in

something else. Was also complaining about the way it steered around corners.
He then wanted me to send him receipts for the tires and ac work. I told him if
I ran across them I would send them to him.

the top of the relay, under the relay cover, and exactly how to take
the cover off.

Since the fuse blew, you could still have a grounded GP. If so, the
next fuse will blow also. Each fuse will blow until you locate and
correct the problem. It is also possible that one of the wires to the
GP is shorted to the block. This is a common problem in the OM60x
engines, and less common on the iron head engines like yours. I'd
guess you have a shorted out GP. The test procedure is in my post
from last night. Without a meter that has a range of 0-20 or 0-50
ohms or a finer scale, or a digital that can read in 10th of an ohm,
it is very difficult to discriminate between a shorted GP and a good GP.

At any rate, before you stick in another fuse, test the ohm readings
at GP wire harness that plugs into the GP relay. Read the ohms
between each of the 4 sockets with liners in them and a good ground.
A good GP will read 1.4 ohms + or - 0.5 ohm. A grounded plug will
read 0 or the same reading you get when you hold the two meter probes
together. (depending on the meter, this may not be 0)

John Ingram via Mercedes
October 3, 2016 at 6:12 PM
Hello Everyone,
I went out to the car and searched for the fuse and finally found it
inside the cover on top of the relay. I hope it is the right fuse
because it was blown and came out in two pieces. It is just a steel
band and looks like the fuses in the on-line websites. The only
lettering I can find looks to say 80A and is followed by a P with a
circle around it. Is this possible?
This car is a very late 83 240D, one of the last ones sent. Over the
years I have had to use the VIN number in order to get the right
part. I think MBZ was using the parts they had left when they made
this car. Some parts were clearly from earlier years, others may have
been last minute changes.

I think I’ll look for a fuse first (80A?), It might fix it.
Thank you all again for your help!
John Ingram

Re: [MBZ] 240D Glow Plugs not Glowing Update

2016-10-03 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
The 80 amp fuse is intended for running 6 glow plugs. It is the WRONG
fuse. The correct fuse looks the same but will be 50 amp. This was in
my post yesterday. Another post yesterday told you the fuse was in the
top of the relay, under the relay cover, and exactly how to take the
cover off.

I'd guess
you have a shorted out GP. The test procedure is in my post from last
night. Without a meter that has a range of 0-20 or 0-50 ohms or a finer
scale, or a digital that can read in 10th of an ohm, it is very
difficult to discriminate between a shorted GP and a good GP.

At any rate, before you stick in another fuse, test the ohm readings at
GP wire harness that plugs into the GP relay. Read the ohms between
each of the 4 sockets with liners in them and a good ground. A good GP
will read 1.4 ohms + or - 0.5 ohm. A grounded plug will read 0 or the
same reading you get when you hold the two meter probes together.
(depending on the meter, this may not be 0)

John Ingram via Mercedes
October 3, 2016 at 6:12 PM
Hello Everyone,
I went out to the car and searched for the fuse and finally found it
inside the cover on top of the relay. I hope it is the right fuse
because it was blown and came out in two pieces. It is just a steel
band and looks like the fuses in the on-line websites. The only
lettering I can find looks to say 80A and is followed by a P with a
circle around it. Is this possible?
This car is a very late 83 240D, one of the last ones sent. Over the
years I have had to use the VIN number in order to get the right part.
I think MBZ was using the parts they had left when they made this car.
Some parts were clearly from earlier years, others may have been last
minute changes.

I think I’ll look for a fuse first (80A?), It might fix it.
Thank you all again for your help!
John Ingram

Re: [MBZ] 240D Glow Plugs not Glowing

2016-10-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The '78 came to me with about 18 gauge wires from the relay to the glow plugs.
Strangely whomever had originally made the wires ran them in series even though
they were parallel plugs. It took a lng time to heat the plugs.
I made new 10ga wires, ran them in parallel and starting improved immensely.

All the Buses up to the beginning of the 68 model had a reduction
gear box at the wheels. It was never a 1:1 in there. The axle had
a smaller gear and the wheel hub had a slightly bigger gear. I
did way too much work on those things not to remember that.

I had a 59 barn door van and it didn?t have gear reduction at the wheels as I
recall, just 1:1 gearing to increase the ride height. I?m not aware that these
had gear reduction, but it?s been a long time since I wrenched on one.

80A. That's what I meant. I think. Whatever it is you can get them at

Re: [MBZ] Stupid buyers

2016-10-03 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Yes, I know what "as is" means. I was there that day we discussed it in law
school.

The bill of sale had all the legal language in it: as is, no warranties
express or implied, blah, blah, blah. I had no legal responsibility to do
anything for the guy AND I told him that several times. But, he was such a
pain in the ass and kept up his demands, that at some point, it was worth it to
get the muffler done just to shut him up. It cost me nothing and he stopped
bugging me.

Do you know the legal significance of the phrase "as is", Donald?
Since it's been around for a while it would seem there would by now be enough
cases to establish its validity or lack of validity in various states?

PO was fed prosecutor, so probably did not homebrew, but lived on an island
with a pack of greenies who might have set up their own pump for local brew.
He had a Diesel Purge kit that may or may not have been used. Looks like it
involves a Gatorade bottle with in and out hose set up. I could set that up to
run 32oz of purge and drive it about. There is a 350SDL at PnP, maybe I find
a set of injectors to rebuild.

[MBZ] what is the point of scam CL ads

2016-10-03 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
Lately I have seen several cars/trucks listed on Craigslist that I am guessing
are some sort of scam. I am not talking about the obvious ones where they
list a 4 year old Mercedes for $2500. These have been older vehicles. For
example, there was a 97 Chevy Truck. Extended cab, Z71 for $1500 with only
85,000 miles. That would be a steal of a deal and I guess the old saying if it
seems too good to be true, it probably is. But, the only way to reply was to
call. There was no email. I called and texted and eventually got directed to
send an email. I didn't because I guess that is the scam. They want your
email.

But, I keep seeing similar ads. Yesterday there was a 92 Ford F-350 with only
32,000 for $2000. I was ready to drive over and give them the cash. I called
and texted and no answer. Then, the ad is removed.

So, what sort of benefit is there to running this scam? Is it just to get
phone numbers? Is it market research? I don't understand why they go to the
trouble.

Another reason why when I use CL any more it's a burner email address and no
phone number.

Of course selling a car involves a title, so they would have your contact
information, but they would have to have kept it from the title when they
bought it.

I would be willing to guess the brake booster problem is more likely a vacuum
leak. However, the capping off of the rear caliper smells of some serious
kludging on someone's part, which makes it scary as you don't know the extent
of their other "repairs".

Re: [MBZ] 240D Glow Plugs not Glowing

2016-10-03 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
No, but I'd guess you can buy a new relay for the price kent wants to
bodge up your car. About $130 for a new one and $30 to 75 for a used
one. Check out ebay You can use a 4 cyl or 5 cyl relay. Just put in
the right fuse.

If you think you want to go the pushbutton relay route, let me know. I
can help you find the right relay and fuse. You can make your own
wires. It won't save you much money, but it will be cheaper than Kent's
kit.

Thank you all for the great replies to my questions. I knew I would
get the benefit of all your experience. I will start testing. Since
the dashboard indicator light goes on this indicates the fuse is good.
Looks like I need to get the relay.

There also is the push button relay kit from Mercedes Source, replaces
stock relay. Anyone tried this?

Thank you all again for your help.

Ok, so it's not a perfect car, but could potentially be worthwhile to look at. So I drop
the seller a line and ask about the "needs a few things" comment. Here's their
reply:

Brakes: power vacuum assist has an issue - more like manual brakes right now -
intermittent
and one of the calipers should be replaced - it wouldn't release so the left
rear caliper is not connected right now
Motor Mounts: Should be replaced - vibrating but not bad when driving
Windows: two do not work - the other two work
AC - blows cold for a few months - then needs a can of refrigerant to replenish
it.

Car starts every time and runs good. Interior is descent. No cracks in dash.
