Re: [MBZ] Use for old walkers

2020-01-23 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I wondered about that. When it stopped raining, they were all gone.
SWMBO said she saw them picking up the second 20 yd dumpster and
dropping the third.  I thought they had the stuff in a pile for some
scrapper to pick up.  But either that happened, or they went  in the
second or third dumpster.

Looks like I missed the chance.

Re: [MBZ] ML Window Regulator Replacement

2020-01-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Andrew, it seems that Mercedes went to rivets on window regulators in the late
90s. I know that W220 and W211 chassis cars use rivets as well. Probably
cheaper to use and easier in production. The regulators aren’t nearly as
substantial as in previous models, either. At least not in the W220s.

Don, I just use a manual riveter from HF like this one:

https://www.harborfreight.com/heavy-duty-17-1-2-half-inch-hand-riveter-with-collection-bottle-66422.html

My small riveter wouldn’t do rivets this size, and I don’t rivet enough to
bother with the hassle of a pneumatic riveter. If this one had a negative it’s
that you have to be able to get straight on at the rivet, so if it’s in a tight
space you might have problems.

Where the camshaft activates the injectors, like a Detroit diesel. VW used
them for a little while, I think 2003 or 2004 until the common rail engines
came out which I think is 2009 or 2010.
They're hard on timing belts and don't get as good economy but are slightly
more powerful, respond better to a tune and are more irritating to replace

then car would fire up. But now I cannot get glow plug light on and
engine will not start without it. Here is a tally of what I have
investigated:

-glow plug resistance appears to be fine, all in the 0.6 to 0.8 ohm range
-glow plug relay seems to be fine, at least I see it providing 12V to
output blades when I energize it, and you can hear relay click

-replaced the K40 relay
-problem appears to be worse when engine or ambient is hot

The problem appears to be that the signal to energize the relay is not
working. I cannot consistently get 12v at the two input wires to the
glow plug relay. My understanding is that this starts with the ignition
switch, but it is also enabled by the temperature sensor located under
the manifold. I wonder if this sensor has gone bad...??

Also, I need to start the car to move it. So I figured if I just apply
12V to the input side of the glow plug relay, then it will pass power to
the glow plugs and I will be able to start it after 10-15 seconds - sort
of bypassing the electronics that send the 12v. However, when I do this
the relay only pops on for 1-2 seconds and turns right back off again,
not nearly enough time to energize those plugs to allow me to start. Is
that relay somehow super smart and know that my 12v is different than
the one from the ECU?

If anyone out there has some input, or can even provide a wiring diagram
for a 97 E210 E300D, that would really help.

I went through this exact issue with my 97 a couple of weeks ago. First
of all trying to hot wire the GP relay is not going to work because this
GP relay is digitally controlled by the engine computer. Even if you
manage to hotwire it, the computer won't allow fuel to the IP if it
doesn't have clear communication with the GP relay. The GP relay has a
PIC16 micro controller in it. There is a small 2 wire (3 pin) plug on
the GP relay with a white and brown wire. Brown is ground and white is a
data line from the engine computer. Grab that plug and wiggle it a bit.
You'll see it has some play. The plug is poorly designed and
intermittently cuts the data signal between the engine computer and GP
relay.

The solution is fairly simple. Solder your own wires to pins 1 and 2 of
the 3 pin plug on the GP relay and use standard off the shelf plugs to
securely plug it into the car's wiring harness (brown and white wires).
Leave everything else the same. You will also need to connect to the
OBD2 port and delete the stored code (P0380 i think).

ITALYMount Vesuvius blast turned ancient victim's brain to glassPublished:
Thursday, January 23, 2020

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius turned an incinerated victim's brain
material into glass, the first time scientists have verified the phenomenon
from a volcanic blast, officials at the Herculaneum archaeology site said
today.

Archaeologists rarely recover human brain tissue, and when they do it is
normally smooth and soapy in consistency, according to an article detailing
the discovery in *The New England Journal of Medicine*. The eruption of
Vesuvius in the year 79 instantly killed the inhabitants of Pompeii and
neighboring Herculaneum, burying an area 12 miles from the volcano in ash
in just a few hours.

The remains of a man lying on a wooden bed were discovered at Herculaneum,
closer to Vesuvius than Pompeii, in the 1960s. He is believed to have been
the custodian of a place of worship, the Collegium Augustalium.

A team led by Pier Paolo Petrone, a forensic anthropologist at the
University of Naples Federico II, determined that the victim's brain matter
had been vitrified, a process by which tissue is burned at a high heat and
turned into glass, according to the study. The fragments presented as
shards of shiny black material spotted within remnants of the victim's
skull.

A study of the charred wood nearby indicates a maximum temperature of 968
degrees Fahrenheit.

"This suggests that extreme radiant heat was able to ignite body fat and
vaporize soft tissue," the study said.

The resulting solidified spongy mass found in the victim's chest bones is
also unique among other archaeological sites and can be compared with
victims of more recent historic events like the firebombing of Dresden and
Hamburg in World War II, the article said.

The flash of extreme heat was followed by a rapid drop in temperatures,
which vitrified the brain material, the authors said.

"This is the first time ever that vitrified human brain remains have been
discovered resulting from heat produced by an eruption," Herculaneum
officials said. *— Associated Press*

2020-01-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I would agree with Andrew somewhat. The S420 W140 was the “gas and go” version
of the chassis, and one in good shape like this one appears to be probably a
$3500 car.

I bought Little Tommy’s S420 with nearly 300k on the clock and it’s still
around here with over 350k on it last time I heard. They’re pretty bulletproof,
but not terribly economical.

They did indeed. They called it the "Hell Scout". Travelcenters of America

I have the issues of the T/A magazine which featured it, but I don't have

A Mercedes 250 diesel rivals or beats the Prius in anything but pure
stoplight to stoplight driving, but the price tag is probably an
indication of high energy in manufacture.

driver sat on the rear seat. I don't think it had a firewall.

I traded the '91 for the parts. The '84 got sold for $200. Sadly I don't

2020-01-23 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
For mileage? Unlikely. The best I ever saw from a 240D was 32mpg. Average over
150,000 miles of driving 240Ds for me was more like 28mpg.
My '98 Jetta maxed at 56mpg, I think I've had the '15 up to 58 or so. In all
cases thats never going over 65mph, sometimes not going over 55.
Angie's '05 Golf has done a paltry 50mpg, the pump deuse engines just don't
make the economy of the others.
Any of those VWs will accelerate faster than a 240D, which is understating how
much faster they are. They'll out handle a 240D and start way better in the
cold than any 61x engine. The 2015 especially is amazing in the cold.
240D is a lovely car in a lot of respects but not from a fuel economy
perspective its outclassed by basically any sedan its size or smaller made in
the last 15 years.

Purely a toy they played with. It was junk.

In the 1970s-Early 1980s, it was semi common to see a 2 seater Vega Kammback
with a Toronado 455 drivetrain in place of the back seat. I heard they were
junk, but went really fast in a straight line.

I found this on BAT, with I assume awful weight distribution, like a SWB pickup

My dream Firefly is more like a R5 Turbo, but with a modern engine, sub 2000lb
weight, and 50mpg. GM did wonders with light weight and efficiency when they
designed the LE2 engine and 6T35 transaxle. I'd basically shove a 2016-2019
Cruze cradle and drivetrain into the back of the Firefly and put bigger
brakes/hubs in the front of the car.

Re: [MBZ] 99 E300

2020-01-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Yeah either one maybe. The daughter unit 124 is ok but needing this and that.
While I’d like a diesel that color combo makes me gag for some reason. Either
flip it to her for the 124 or sell it. I like the silver E320 gasser, it does
ok on petrol, about what the diesel did and is quite peppy. Everything works,
its a pretty nice car. I’m going to check out that old dead man 211 05 E500,
the woman seems anxious to unload it, if that is nice I might unload the 210
E320 then. Creep up into newer cars although they are getting more complex.. .

I’m thinking this might be something simple on the E300 as I doubt an injection
pump would go bad. I need to learn what that GP issue is about — a relay maybe?
Didn’t look at that on the first $500E300 as it just has 2 bad GPs. If the
GPs aren’t heating it’s not gonna light off easily. Or maybe a fuel pump or
relay? Both of those would be simple enough to swap from the crashed E300.

Any ideas let me know.

request from both woman and driver to lay off, man continues. Driver stops
cab, brandishes pistol and tells the man to get out. Man gets out, calls
cops, and cabby gets arrested in the Peoples Republic of Madison WI.

A simple enough weapon was a couple athletic socks around a few rolls of

The 2.3L Mustang/Tempo engine was directly descended from the 2300
Pinto engine.
The 2.0L Escort/Tempo diesel was a Mazda with a belt drive injection
pump and an aluminum head. Reliable like a BMW aluminum head diesel,
not like an OM601/602/603.

1984 Tempo 2.3l 4spd manual was my first car. Dad replaced it with a '91 Tempo
3spd automatic, I don't remember what engine was in it but that car was crap
and it hated me. He gave that car to Angie, it still hated me.
The 2.3l 4spd was a good combo in the older car, had enough grunt to be fairly
driveable. IIRC the engine was from Mazda so it was reasonably skookum for a
1980's 4 banger. The electronic ignition modules in both Tempos we had were
terrible. IIRC the '91 needed one every 70,000 miles or so. Fortunately it was
relatively easy to change. I did it once in the parking lot of our apartment
with a guy telling me "that'll never fix it". He shut his yap quick when the
car started. I still have the tool required.
I traded that car for a BMW jack, an MB lug wrench and a handful of misc parts
for my '81 300TD. I thought it was a good deal.
