Re: [MBZ] OT old kohler engine running rich?
Rule of thumb has always been 2 turns and 1/2 . start, warm it up... then adjust in 1/8th turn, let it settle,,, then another 1/8th until it gets to lean to run well... then out until it goes rich... count the turns as you go either direction and use judgement as to where it runs best... at idle... Then run it at high throttle and see how it does... some further adjustment may be indicated to get full power and smooth running at higher power settings Is the air cleaner fresh and clean? If it's clogged with gradu that will act like the choke is full on and make it run rich... starving for air with the same fuel = Rich mixture... Pull the plug and clean it... if the plug is fouled same result... runs like a rich mix. Good luck... hope it helps. How long is the screw? Ouch... no doubt, drove it with the tire flat or nearly flat for a while? Look at the inside of the tire when it's dismounted, just to see what shows for damage on the inside. The Delco in my Saturn was from Fall 2014. 2016 I left the trunk open for over an hour and the car refused to try to start, thinking the battery was too low. Hooking up a charger reset the low voltage trigger and the car started, but that was an indication of very low battery capacity, I should have traded it in under warranty. Winter 2019, the car cranked slow, so I bought a couple of tiny Stanley lithium pack. When temps hit -13F, the car barely started. When it was -18 a couple days later, no start. The Stanley pack, twice the size of a cigarette pack, made the difference between starting and not starting. I believe I used the warm pack out of the house and not the cold pack out of the car, I figure it's abusive to use lithium batteries below 14F. I've also used it to start lawn mowers as an alternative to buying another $90 motorcycle battery that the mower would just kill in a year or two. This is about the smallest and weakest thing I found, seems like they were about $35 at Walmart a couple years ago, I got them on clearance for under $15. They will start a car with help from the car's battery, but they won't do it alone. https://www.amazon.com/STANLEY-SS4LS-PowerToGo-Lithium-Portable/dp/B07MGC1SLX/ ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Yes USAA towing is worthless because they dont pay as much as other jobs so the drivers promise to come but never show up. You need to ne on a first name basis with a local tow guy to drive old stuff. The lithium batteries are handy for break downs, but just as handy for helping other people with their problems when you are out and about, or when someone's truck wont crank and is blocking your driveway. So they are really twice as useful. On Sat, Sep 19, 2020, 2:24 PM Allan Streib via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > I've gotten assistance with the jump packs twice. My boss had one of those pack things in his car. Wonderful for getting a jump in the spring or summer with warm temps in a small petrol power car. Not capable of lighting off a diesel or much use in the dead of winter where big amps are needed. #1 boy who lives in ND keeps one in his jeep for when it is too cold to get a start. It seems to warm up the battery just enough to let loose electrons out of his 1200 CCA winter AGM. clay “I think it’s time we stopped our cringing embarrassment about our history, about our traditions, and about our culture, and we stop this general bout of self-recrimination and wetness.” B. Re: [MBZ] Any comments about this S430?
Ticking time bomb Build quality is sub par and surpassed by Kia or Hyundai. Airmatic failures are certain and will set you back $4k+ to remedy. Clusters have been replaced under recall but will fail once more and cost over $2k to replace. Failed cluster renders the car undrivable, since you have no idea what is going on with speed or engine management. Plastic coolant parts that fail leading to overheating. Nav/edutainment system suffers cascade failures. Catastrophic converters plug up to the tune of $2k each side. There was a HUUUGE difference in the DSG transmission in the 2014 Beetle TDI and the nearly identical new 2015. The 2014 was quite jerky starting out like a novice driving a manual, and the 2015 was nearly as smooth as a conventional automatic transmission. The shifts were quick and crisp. Re: [MBZ] Daimler cheated too? (I'm sure VW feels better now)
I had a Jetta once, a 1991 model year (A2) purchased new (I was young and my dad always bought his cars new, so I just thought that was the right way to do it). I paid between $12K and $13K for it IIRC. 5-speed manual, 1.8l NA 8v engine. This was a non-interference engine which was important given the reputation VWs had for timing belts failing at the replacement interval + 1 mile. Shifted like butter, and had that solid german feel and handling unlike modern VWs that are indistinguishable from Japanese cars. Loved the car until it was about 10 years old, then everything started falling apart. I'm sure 8 years of Northern IL winters didn't help. Also owned a '91 Vanagon for a few years until it was totaled in a wreck. I do miss that van. I was contemplating a Subaru engine transplant or the Bostig Ford Zetec kit. I'd seriously consider another one but nice examples are very rare around here. Local VW dealer currently has a very nicely restored Type 2 sitting on the lot as eye candy for passers-by. Asking $60K for it. Allan Curt Raymond via Mercedes writes: > I HATE DSG transmissions. I hate how they sound, I hate how they jerk in a > parking lot. If you still want the best diesel I recommend the 250 GLK BlueTEC which was made from 2013 through 2015. Mine still has the original seven-year-old varta battery which is strong and does not need replacement despite being drained twice in the last month. My most recent fuel economy was nearly 36 mpg, which included off Highway local road travel as well as highway speed. I HATE DSG transmissions. I hate how they sound, I hate how they jerk in a parking lot. I hate the feeling during shifts and they're fragile. Nothing to like about those. The 6spd manual in my Jetta is a fantastic transmission, it shifts smoothly and its geared nicely to live with. Sure its not a Mercedes but in 2015 you could have my car for around $20,000. Very affordable compared to a Mercedes. Its 80% as good (maybe more, 50mpg remember) for half the money. -Curt On Saturday, September 19, 2020, 11:10:10 AM EDT, OK Don via Mercedes wrote: Not quite accurate - our Passat TDI was one of the cheating cars and needed BlueTec fluid. Yes I take your point on test conditions, but I would like to see the language of that law. I would argue any time multuple auto manufacturers are found to be in multibillion dollar violation of a law, that either the law is poorly written or the interpretation of that law was changed. Like suddenly both vw and Mercedes decided independently to commit massive emissions fraud? Unlikely. The PR is terrible and look at the direct cost. Our Touareg ran bluetec also. That wasnt the issue with it. They just fixed the software and we kept driving it. It took an hour. Re: [MBZ] BAT, for those interested in the manly art of flight
No Intentional spins - it is hard to recover from them. Solo from the rear seat only - weight and balance is very critical for flight. Without someone in the rear seat, there is not enough elevator authority to take-off or climb, perhaps to even maintain level flight. The CG needs to be in front of the center of lift, but not so far forward that you can't lift the tail with the elevator. Re: [MBZ] We've had just about enough
The X5 is a good-looking car, and had all the features we needed. It felt safe and solid, and the I6 engine was strong enough and got somewhat better mileage. I think the usual fillup was 21mpg. I really like the tailgate, gives you a place to sit if you want. The hill descent button, used something like three times on the worst luge days, was somewhat amazing. The car was highly satisfactory, _as a car_, but its appetite for money was untenable. This was the "fine, you don't like what I provide? Re: [MBZ] Daimler cheated too? (I'm sure VW feels better now)
Not quite accurate - our Passat TDI was one of the cheating cars and needed BlueTec fluid. The only things I didn't like about that car were the maintenance costs for the dual clutch tranny, the seats were not as comfortable as the W124, and the wind noise was higher than an old W124 at 70mph. No, the testing is supposed to be done with exactly the same operational parameters in the computers as real world driving conditions. The fine is for writing software that figured out when the vehicle was being emission tested and using DIFFERENT operational parameters in order to meet the test. Of course it didn't when run on the road, it wasn't intended to. The law is quite specific about this. VW decided to cheat instead of using BlueTec technology, and got caught.. Re: [MBZ] Daimler cheated too? (I'm sure VW feels better now)
Missed opportunity. They don't import any diesels any more that I am aware of. I looked for a diesel suv in 2018 and couldnt find any.at the dealers. Our old 2014 vw touareg diesel is still chugging merrily around the black hills with my sister at the wheel. Pushes 40mpg on the highway. 400 ft lbs of torque. Great car. I guess my problem with the fines is that the cars complied with the testing at the time, which was emissions on rollers in a shed somewhere. Then they decided to change the test to variable conditions real world driving, and surprise - the old cars did not meet the standard. This is called moving the goalposts. It is not mercedes' fault that the original test was crap and only tested one operating condition. If you only test for that, of course everyone is going to optimize their software for that. It is like deciding after grades are out to have everyone come back to take a different exam and then change the curve so they all fail. Kind of a shakedown type move. Meanwhile even the worst of these cars puts out a fraction of what any old 123 or 124 puts out every day. I like clean air as much as the next guy. Bring on the lithium and the hydrogen. Frankly I am more interested in what India and China are doing on emissions than what we are doing, even though we seem to pollute a lot also. Re: [MBZ] BAT, for those interested in the manly art of flight
Coworker at Kohler had one of these that he restored. I got to fly in it a couple of times. Definitely an experience everyone should have at least once. -D > On Sep 18, 2020, at 11:58 PM, G Mann via Mercedes > wrote: > > 3 days remaining on the BAT sale... and $65,000 is cheap in today's market, > presuming it has good logs and engine time remaining, etc etc.. > > If you can fly this airplane your next issue airplane is a P51 single seat > fighter, no instructor... get in, fire it up, and learn how to fight with > it... > A.. the days when men were men... > > On Fri, Sep 18, 2020 at 7:19 PM OK Don via Mercedes > wrote: > >> Interesting, I wonder how much it will bring on BAT vs Barnstormers, etc. >> >> On Fri, Sep 18, 2020 at 5:36 PM G Mann via Mercedes >> >> wrote: >> >>> https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1942-boeing-stearman-model-75/ >>> ___ >>> http://www.okiebenz.com >>> >>> To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ >>> >>> To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: >>> http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com >>> >>> >> >> -- >> OK Don >> >> "Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to >> pause and reflect." Re: [MBZ] Kleb car at a Kleb price
Probably high 60s here in the afternoon with a breeze. Sky was so clear that within a few minutes I could feel I was going to get burned on my face if I didn’t turn occasionally. No filter here like there is in FL. Nippy last night in the high 40s, but nothing a light jacket didn’t cure. Got an outdoor wedding today outside of Nashville (IN) so it should be equally as nice. -D > On Sep 18, 2020, at 11:22 PM, Mitch Haley via Mercedes > wrote: > > A friend from Florida called me this afternoon to update the Nav in his > Nissan. > It was in the upper 50s and sunny this afternoon. Re: [MBZ] We've had just about enough
Oh gosh. You actually bought one of those things? That is a 3 year lease-only machine. Everything else is just a world of pain. All BMWs are similar. You can buy a 65,000 528i and 5 years later it is a 9000 car. Poof. Leaking oil everywhere with a trunk that doesnt work. Anyway not that anyone asked but my advice for anyone needing a 3 row suv in the city is a Lexus 460gx. I could go on and on about it, but no need. We did 1400 miles door to door with four people and a 100lb komondor through 117 degree weather and the rocky mountains, Utah kitty corner, Wyoming, california, Nevada and South Dakota last July. Rooftop tent, 120qt cooler and a cargo box on the hitch. Car never missed a beat. Super stable at 80mph uphill, downhill, 30mph headwinds, crosswinds yada yada. Lots of power, low range for getting up trails, full sized spare. LA seems to have figured this out. They are everywhere here. Nice. Heavy, safe truck. They havent changed it since 2015 or so, and I hope they never do. Well maybe the motor eats less timing belts now or something at 200k miles than it used to. Not sure; it has never been in the shop except to turn the brake rotors and change the oil. V8 power, premium gas. AC will freeze you out in the Valley of Fire. A 570 or land cruiser might be superior in terms of room inside, but those dont fit in a parking spot as easily. The 460 was the replacement for a 2018 diesel x5 that ate it's $11,000 high pressure fuel pump twice in 8000 miles and left us standing by the road each time. BMW finally asked for it back as they were too far in the hole and getting deeper on the deal. We drive it for free for 6 months and I would still never consider operating another BMW of any flavor as long as I live. They are a blight on humanity. My wife owned a 528 when I met her and I was too dumb to learn from that experience. Absolute waste of metal.
