But it’s too bad, as the exterior actually looks pretty nice, except for the

For what little the “special purchase” deal Kroil offers for like $10 that
includes a can of the liquid and a spray can, I’m good with buying it. Between
the two it lasts me several years if not longer.

ATF mixed with acetone. Mix a small amount just prior to use. The
acetone draws into the tiniest crevices and pulls the ATF with it. I
learned about it on this list, or maybe the old mbz.org list.

It was crying out for a 606. Mechanical diesel, 722.3, etc. The thinking
man's option would have been a 648/722.6. For gas, the drivetrain from a
560 drops right in.

I will say there appears to have been a lot of nice workmanship and money
put into that car. The basic ideas were just kind of random, like that
deboss garage dude converting a 124 wagon to LS, creating a ton of crappy
work for no apparent reason instead of dropping a 606 in. I mean, at least
use an m119 if you want a v8 in a 124; bolt a bunch of factory parts up and
go, rather than reinventing every system on the car e.g. A/C, steering
rack, cover strut reinforcement, motor and tranny mounts, fuel tank, blah
blah yada yada.

Nicer than most similar efforts.

I've been pretty happy with the hand tools from Harbor Freight. Really
seem just as good as Craftsman, at least present-day Craftsman.

I've never sprung for Snap-on or Hazet or anything like that, so don't
know how they compare to those.

I bought my tool box there too. It's OK. It came with drawer liners, but
the drawer slides are not the best. I'm not a pro and I don't move it
around much, so it's fine for my purposes.

far. Easier when you don't care what it looks like.

I think there might have been some confusion with the posts as they crossed,
too.

Yes, I use Kroil as a penetrating lubricant. Great stuff. The Fluid Film I used
to prevent corrosion on the underside of the E320 4Matic. The W210s seem to
immediately rust out upon crossing the Mason-Dixon Line, so I figured it might
defer the inevitable for a few months.

Plus the livestock likes the smell…

2020-11-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I fogged all of the chassis cavities with Fluid Film on the E320 4Matic while I
was working on it in preparation for it’s move to the Great White North. I had
to buy a bunch of it when I bought it to do the W111 so I had a couple of cans
left over. Figured it couldn’t hurt, and I won’t use the stuff in Florida.

I bought a Harbor Freight extendo-handle 1/2 drive ratchet last summer for use
at camp and the dang thing is really good. I used it again last week when I was
up there. Its got relatively fine teeth, ratchets good and the extendo-handle
is actually helpful when you need to really lean on it. I got it for pulling
the seat off the old Super M. The bolts on that were not wanting to come out
but with the handle extended they moved right along.
This thing:
https://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/sockets-ratchets/12-in-drive-extendable-ratchet-62311.htmlFor
$20 its as good as any Craftsman ratchet I've ever had. I used to avoid HF
tools with moving parts but dang...

I have a lot of duplicates of things from accretion over the years. For

greasy or have sawdust in them. All of those duplicates are going north.

I don’t, however, have doubles of things like ratchets and socket sets. Some
duplicates, but not complete sets. I’ll buy new for those and keep the dupes in
Florida. I had a pretty good set of standard combination wrenches, but not
metrics, so those will get bought as new up north, too.

All of my MB specific stuff will stay in Florida. I’m not doing any substantive
work on cars in Indiana, at least not intentionally. Worst case scenario
there’s a Harbor Fright nearby, so if I had to make do with something in the
way of hand tools I could snag it there.

Xmas ask is more Lowe’s gift cards so I can get a rolling box to put the tool

Oops, fresh out of 30s, but here's a 25:
https://www.rakuten.com/advanceautoparts.com

The coupons don't work for oils, 15 years ago they worked on ATF and
Brake Fluid, but I believe those are both blocked now. And the $40 off
on $100 purchase (which I haven't seen in a long time) quit working on
trailer hitches about 6 years ago. They want to save the discounts for
the parts that cost $120 at Advance or $80 at Rock.
I was pricing Walker exhaust parts for the Saturn (still the only
vehicle I have real winter tires for) and Advance minus 25% was
something like a dollar more than Rock plus shipping for a resonator,
which, amazingly enough, was supposed to be in stock at Advance.

vehicles were in less than showroom condition, I chose to forgo listing as
drivers and sold them as parts cars. There were bins of parts that did

I watched this vid yesterday of a guy with an ML that had limp mode.  He
dug into it and found the cable with all the wires to the trans to be
completely worn down, shorting, not even working. He pulled one from a
junker and spliced it back in, hoping that would work.  The vid of his
getting the codes cleared was coming so no resolution there yet.  Which
reminds me I need to dig into the ML320 and check that aspect, or swap a
TCM into it and see if it will work.

Re: [MBZ] Low Cost Drawer Liner

2020-11-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have a lot of duplicates of things from accretion over the years. For
example, I have a complete Craftsman screwdriver set that was always in a wall
cabinet I had for my woodworking setup when I had one. Tools were segregated
between garage and wood shop so as not to commingle with things that could be
greasy or have sawdust in them.

Xmas ask is more Lowe’s gift cards so I can get a rolling box to put the tool
box on…

Re: [MBZ] OT: Tesla Crash Rains Flaming Batteries into Nearby Homes

2020-11-23 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
It is taking off. Accepted a patient from El Centro on Sat; they are
swamped and transferring overflow patients to other area hospitals. ER doc
there said it is just like the Spring wave all over again.

We were down to under 30 in house before this wave started. Today we are at
70 total. I admitted a few over the weekend.

No travel for the holidays; parents hunkering down in AZ, us here. Local
family invited us, but h@#$ no. I got a minor cold somehow recently but
tested negative. Nanny's 17yo son got covid so she is out for a couple
weeks. Kid's coach also got it, so that is two exposures pretty close to
home recently. I worry more about it in the community than I do at work. At
least at work we know who has it and who doesn't. Probably equal risk at
work is catching it from other healthcare providers in breakrooms at lunch.
There have been some hospital outbreaks like that. For the active covid
patients everyone tries to limit interactions and take full precautions
with.

Steroids help a bit; the people I see are the 30-60 year olds who need
facemask O2 but are not sick enough to need the ICU. If they worsen on high
flow 02 despite proning etc or if they are tenuous with risk factors we
send them to ICU for positive pressure ventilation. So far we have enough
beds for that.

We are not overwhelmed but the way cases are spiking we are likely set to
hit new records. Whether we will need to cancel elective surgeries again
depends on what the census does. We have more contingency plans in place
now for flipping over to high volumes of covid patients, so that part will
be less stressful than the Spring.

Basically this disease is going to keep kicking our butts until we get
serious about controlling it. Vaccine will help but will take time. Noem in
my home state of South Dakota seems to have hitched her wagon to the wrong
star, which is too bad. My sister has it up there right now and her husband
just got it from her. Some governors just have to pee on the fence for
themselves I guess. Noem is from Watertown, which is close to where my Dad
is from. I thought she was OK but this is what you get when you manage
communicable disease as a political problem instead of a public health
problem. My cousin says a lot of his employees won't go to stores that
require masks, even to pick up parts or whatever for him. It would be funny
if so many people weren't dying. Lots of older folks in those smaller towns
are getting wiped out.

I know I can get precut drawer liners for big $$$ if I wanted, but I’m cheap in

I found some Duck brand shelf liner in a 20’ x 6’ roll for $9.00 on the Island

spent about a half an hour in the garage last night with my carpenter’s square

Good idea too.  Being a belt and suspenders kind of guy I think the idea
of some fiberglass then a piece of aluminum over that, then maybe a
coupla little screws on either side once it cures. Thanks Curley and Max!

My weedwhacker housing cracked at this screw attaching point and caused all

I got it all back together but need to get this sorted before I use it.  I’m
thinking some JBweld plastic epoxy with something shrouding the curved plastic
housing bit to hold it and make it stronger and somehow filling inside where
the screw goes, or just getting a longer screw and washer to fit over the top
to hold the strengthened bit of the plastic tight.

Any thoughts?

And I suppose I should address the inevitable comments about the
sacrilege committed to this car. I know. In my defense, I have

although I did have a spare turbo motor for this, I really wanted

It's probably just the cable, connector, or the TCM occasionally acting
up, either would be fairly easy to fix.  Conductor plate might even be
marginal.  It looks like the rear is blown though, I think these have
SLS?  Otherwise looks like a fairly nice car.

That would be why your one Dr friend said it would be cheating.

Correct.  I guess at some point it will be noted in a database somewhere
but will not be "personalized" unless a doc needs to know for some
medical reason then they can find out.

have the anitbodies; hence, I will go get the thrid-party test

I don't know if this one needs to be double blind, but it definitely
should be at least single blind, because they don't want the test
subjects to say 'I got vaccine, so now it's party time'.

If it's known to the subjects that they probably got the vaccine (2/3
test, 1/3 control), I can imagine the control subjects taking risks they
might not have otherwise.
