Re: [MBZ] rod benders

2016-02-07 Thread Angelo Giaimo via Mercedes
My 1990 350SDL had 280K+ miles when I sold it last year..and it's still
being used as a daily driver. However I did just check and it's not for sale
on CL or eBay.

Wife now has a CPO 2011 Bluetek ML, now with 60K, just in the shop for warranty
workcam sensor, oil cooler and timing chain. Also fuel filter and trans
service...my nickel.

Now I know this car will not be as reliable or as cheap to maintain as my SDL,
but what's the net wisdom on this one?

[MBZ] 126 sunroof gasket

2014-05-23 Thread Angelo Giaimo
Hi,

The sunroof gasket on my 1990 350 Rodbender SDL keeps pulling away from the
insert in the roof gets jammed in the sliding roof panel when it gets
lowered from vent to closed position. Usually in the drivers rear corner.
I can hold the gasket in place with something thin and gradually close the
roof.

Does the gasket shrink over time (and then pull away from the corners?) or
should it be glued in place, or just replaced? Alternatively, I can just
keep it closed, but I like the open air in the summertime!

Thanks!

[MBZ] ML350BT? and 91 350 SDL status

2014-04-20 Thread Angelo Giaimo
Wife really likes a 2011 ML350BT at a local dealer. CPO, low miles.

Anything I should look out for with this vehicle? Only issues I know of
are potential leaking oil cooler and no transmission dipstick. Are these
real issues? ( if it's covered to 100k miles). Anything else?

BTW, our friends in Jacksonville have a deposit on their 91 350 SDL and
waiting for the guy to get his ins check for the balance. Looks like a
done deal.

[MBZ] ML vrs GLK Diesel?

2014-03-30 Thread Angelo Giaimo
Well, SWMBO is considering downsizing her 03 Tahoe, so we've been test
driving a few small SUVs. ( X3, Q5 and some MBZ's)

Test drove a '11 ML Bluetec and '12 GLK. I am partial to the diesel, but
wife likes the GLK. From prices I've looked at, a '11 ML350 Bluetec is
about the same money as a '13 GLK250 Bluetec. I realize they're different
vehicles, but is there any reason to stay away of either vehicles? We
tend keep our cars long term, (have a 90 350 SDL and a 01 530i); are
either of these MB's something that can be kept long term without being a
money pit, or should they be considered something to dump prior to the CPO
warranty expiring?

Can anyone comment on actual gas mileage on these cars? As gas mileage is
a consideration, do these diesels get significantly better mileage than
their gas counterparts? One reason we're lookingTahoe gets 15 mpg on a
good day

Any/all comments welcome!

Thanks!

[MBZ] 350SDL for Sale......

2014-03-30 Thread Angelo Giaimo
My friends in Jacksonville have decided to part with their 1991 350SDL. (
too many cars and this one not driven enough.) White with grey leather.
No rust, garage kept, etc. Drives, handles great. It's what we drive
when we're in town.

Has a factory replacement engine right around the time they bought it from
Brumo's, used, in the early 90's. Burns/leaks NO oil with about 180k
miles, so I don't think it's one of those Rodbender motors. I do know
it's a well maintained car. I do know there was extensive suspension
rebuilding recently done. I really don't know what they'll accept,
price-wise.

I could tell you more, but if anyone is interested, PM me, and I'll get you
their contact info.

Re: [MBZ] 350 SDL Opinions

2013-09-21 Thread Angelo Giaimo
Kalib, I'm in the lower Hudson Valley, about 70 miles north of NYC.

I drove the car to the restoration shop that did my rust repair and repaint
about 5 years ago. Including new front fenders, a crapload of new trim and a
new trunk lid, as the old one was I rough shape. Probably dumped $6K+ into the
car that year.

Insco's from both parties did estimates, probably within 10% of each other,
around $3.5K. Shop left me a msg last night they already has a tail light
assembly, and looking for a rear deck but still need my okay to do the work.
Wilton, thanks for the offer; if I look at this one next week and it's a POS,
I'll contact you. Shop said insco would cover repair up to the vehicle's value.

My concern was they were going to value the car around $2K and total it. They
value is about $7K, so right now, the numbers look good. Don't know if I can
just take the $3.5K check and keep/part out the vehicle, or if that's even an
option, which was a thought, if I wanted to get rid of it, knowing the model's
stellar reliability reputation.

More later..

[MBZ] 350 SDL Opinions

2013-09-19 Thread Angelo Giaimo
Well folks, it finally happened! My 1990 350SDL rod bender with 278k and a
repair history similar to Wilton's (my head gasket was at ~125k but still on
the original trans) was rear-ended by a school bus!

Getting an estimate from my shop today and my ins co is looking at it also, as
is the bus co's ins. Have full collision and comp, yet, so I don't know how the
numbers work out or if its a total.

After seeing what happened to Wilton, I was just wondering if I should seize
the opportunity to unload it or fix it

Just PO'ed right now.

[MBZ] For Kaleb: Routes around NYC

2011-07-29 Thread Angelo Giaimo
Kaleb,

Depending where you're coming from, (Maine?) You may want to hook up with
I-84, shoot across CT into NY, across the hudson river and pick up the NYS
Thruway to I-287, where you can get several westbound Interstates (I-80 and
I-78). You can avoid the I-95 traffic headed to NYC, and the city itself,
if you want to.

Wanna go to the Jersey Shore, stay on I-287 and pick the the Garden State
Parkway. Exit 100 is Ocean Grove (my favorite) and Asbury Park. Just south
of there, you can pick up I-195 and head back to the Jersey Turnpike (I-95)
towards Philly or wherever else you want to go.

Just some suggestions. Drive Safely...

Re: [MBZ] '91 350SDL air cond

2010-08-28 Thread Angelo Giaimo
On my '90 350SDL with aux fans that won't kick in and an erratic temp guage,
(goes from 85 to pegged @ 120+, and back again), a slight tap at the top of
the dashboard above the gauge will cause it to jump, so we figured the guage
it intermittent. Even hit the block with a laser thermometer by the sensor
, engine is cooling as it should. IIRC, there are 2 separate sensors, one
for the gauge, which we replaced, thinking the sensor was intermittent. The
other goes to the ACC unit. Don't remember if the sensor or the relay
replacement caused the fans to start working again, but I know we did not
replace the ACC PBU. YMMV.

Got 4 cans of R-12 left. Only enough for 1 re-charge after I find where my
leak is. ;-(

[MBZ] New Car Sightings.....

Got a call today from someone I know at my local dealer.seems they had
an extra W126 they wanted to get rid of. So I dropped by and looked at the

project. Wanted $600 for it. No sale. Anyway, on the showroom was a matte
brown (black?) SLS AMG with brown leather interior. Only $236K, IIRC. Too
much No sale, again. But a very pretty car.

Earlier that day, I spotted a new B-Class. (small SUV?) on the road and
inquired about it while at the dealer. Apparently, they won't be for sale
in the US. This one belongs to a Mexican collage student at a local

[MBZ] 126 Electrical Gremlins

2009-12-28 Thread Angelo Giaimo
Well, although the paint job is done, the car's now got a few electrical
problems.

I already mentioned the tach not working, but today, I had a dead
battery...purchased in '03, I figured it was time to put a new one in. ~$125
from the dealer. (I get a discount for a 'vintage' car.) Car now cranks,
but won't start. GP light not coming on. Plugged it the block heater for
about an hour (31 degrees outside) and after several attempts, I got it
running.,

Now, when I try to start the car, (as before) no GP light, but after it
starts, the GP light comes on for about a minute and then goes off. Now I
could see loosing one or two GP's and still being able to start the car, but
I suspect with as difficult it was to start and as rough as it ran, maybe I
lost all of them? Or should I be looking at the GP relay? Is the GP ckt
fused? Can't find it in the ETM or the fuse list in the box.

As an aside, even after it was warmed up, about 5 minutes, it still runs
rough at idle, but smothes right out when I hit the throttle.

Any clues as to what may be wrong?

Thanks,

Angelo

[MBZ] Columbia Resturant in Ybor City, FL

2009-12-07 Thread Angelo Giaimo
Andrew,

Dan got it about right. We know Columbia from one of the other "Columbia"
restaurants. There are 3; others in St. Augustine (near my stompin ground
when I'm in fla.) and Miami. Authentic Cuban food, great atmosphere, etc.
On different nights, they have strolling Mariachi bands, Flamingo dancers,
etc, etc. (Call to see if there's entertainment first.). Great Sangria (Get
the stuff with the brandy in it..yum!)

Obligatory MB content: A few years ago, we drove my SDL from Jax to Ybor
city, just to have dinner (As the one in St. A was closed). Against our
better judgement at the time, ie:too much sangria, we drove all the way to
Naples to surprise some friends and spent the next 10 days winding our way
back up the west cost just taking in the sights. It was great, as it was
summer and all the winter residents were back north, where they belonged.

[MBZ] Vandalism at local dealer......

2009-11-12 Thread Angelo Giaimo
Went to my paint shop yesterday to check on my car.Prep work done,
should be going into the paint booth in a day or so for BC/CC paint. Coming
along fine...

Interestingly, there were two late model S-Class cars (S550's ?) in for work
from my local dealer. Seems like someone needed some high-intensity
headlamp assemblies and went to the dealers' FRONT lot, at night, broke into
them, popped the hood and pried out the headlamp assys, and some other
sensors. Caused about $15K worth of damage to each car. Theory is someone
bought a damaged car at an auction, thought they got a good deal, then found
out how much the headlamp assys cost.Is this going to be like what
happened to airbags years ago?

Another reason I drive an old benz.......

The paint manufacturer (I won't give the name, but if anyone want to know,
email me privately) is re-emburseing my shop to re-shoot my car. It was
determined by my body shop and the rep that it was a failure of the paint,
not the application or the prep. When I questioned why there was no
clearcoat, (answer:solids are shot single stage; metallics shot BC/CC.), he
offered to re-shoot it as BC/CC, hence, my question. Based on what I've
read and the link provided by Larry T(?), I'll be taking the BC/CC route.

I was also planning on r/r the bumper chrome but I think I'll wait till the
spring. And my shop said no problem doing that part of the job in the
spring.

One more thing..anyone have some nice, newer W126 Palomino seats or
interrior parts (drivers' door panel, in specific) they want to part with?

[MBZ] Pure breed and mix-breed dogs......

hip
displasia for example. Mixed breeds are just plain healthier genetically.
===
Mitch, I think we're saying almost the same thing..

Breeding with your (1'st) cousin is also socially unacceptableeven if
she is cute and you use birth control. .

Yes, breeders have to be very selective (weather they mate 2 of the same or
2 different breeds of dogs) as to make sure they don't pass along any
genetic problems. That's obvious. Allot of breeders do not. Obviously, if
you increase your gene pool to include all dogs, not just your own breed,
increases the chance for not passing on defective genes. I agree with you
100%. (ask me how I know)

Our first poodle, Rosie, (Rescued from a breeder) probably bred to be small,
had a multitude of problems, most of which were hereditary. Two Luxacated
Patellas, seizures, PRA, which caused premature blindness were all defects
that could have been avoided had our first dog's breeder been more
responsible. The pedigree we were given by the breeder was a complete
fabrication. Still, she lived to the ripe old age of 17. We're lucky to
have the means to take care of her and learned allot along the way.

Lucy, on paper, and with allot of other references and recommendations is
about as good as we could find after our 1'st learning experience.

As for the latest designer dogsLaberdoodles, Cocker-poos, etc, who's to
say that the offspring does not end up with the bad traits of each breed?
And they're still mutts. (Not that it's a bad thing, though.)

[MBZ] Personality of Labradoodles

2009-09-30 Thread Angelo Giaimo
Although while crossing a poodle with a lab has created the next trendy dog
in an effort to possibly getting the best attributes from each breed, what
does the Lab contribute? (Please, I'm not trying to start a flame war or
anything, I'm just curious.) As as per the AKC, Labradoodles are
mixed breed dogs.AKA: "mutts" . (BTW, there's nothing wrong with mutts,
but why deliberately breed them?) Poodles are already hypoallergenic and
smart as hell, and if smartness and hypoallergenic is your goal, just get a
poodle. We've had two. Our first lived 18 years. Our 2'nd one (Balywick
Beam of Light..."Lucy") just became a certified therapy dog @ 18 months.
And ours have always been cut in Lamb cut, no ribbons, no bows, no pom-poms
as not to look like one of those fru-fru dogs. And a team of poodles have
run the Iditarod in Alaska.

[MBZ] Electrical Temp Problem? 1190 350 SDL

2009-08-06 Thread Angelo Giaimo
OK.so I thought I had an overheating issue with my 350SDL after I got
the A/C charged. Don't know if I still do.

1'st outing with the car, about a month ago, temp reached over 110C. (Needle
between 100 and 120 Mark) with the A/C on. Shut her down and noticed liquid
running out from under the front pass side of the car, (Like under the air
cleaner). Traced leak back to a bad hose that leaked under pressure between
the reservoir and the radiator. New hose later, no leak but temp still
rising above 100C with the AC on and aux fans not kicking in. Changed
therno switch at the front of the block.fixed that problem.

Now, the engine's running @ temp. (80-85C), and stays stable. (verified
with a laser/spot thermometer on the thermostat.) BUT the gauge inside the
car slowly creeps up from 80-85C to nearly 100C, over 15-20 minutes. (NOTE,
this time, the fans never kicked in as the actual temp was only 80-85C).

Question: What would cause the temperature difference between what we read
with the laser/spot thermo and what the dash gauge reads? Anyone ever see
this before?

Thanks!

True, the only caveat is you must pay back all the SS checks you already

So, if you banked the checks and make a few thou on interest, you get to
keep that. Also, you'll probably have to amend your tax returns for those
years, because, if you were working under the limit AND collecting SS, part
of your SS is taxable.

Basically, you're giving back the $$$ you already received in trade for

[MBZ] A/C Q's on a 126.....

2009-05-27 Thread Angelo Giaimo
The A/C on my 1990 350 SDL was not really cooling like it shouldand that
was last summer. This year, it's worse. Since I've had the car, every 3-4
years, I usually have to add a 1/2 - 1 pound or so to get it to cool
adequately, So, I guess it's time again.

It also has those dual aux fans, right behind the grill and it looks like
one is dead. Does anyone know if I need to Remove and Re-install the
radiator, evaporator, et al to replace the fan, or is the fan replaceable
(from the front) without removing them?

As for the A/C, I've thought about just adding more R-12 to keep it cooling
hopefully, for another few years (and running with 1 of 2 aux fans) OR see
if the fan can be replaced without removing the evaporator. Obviously, if
the evap needs to come out, (to R/R the fan) then I guess we'll check and
fix any significant leaks and re-charge the system.

I've found R-12 12-oz cans for sale on CL. Anyone know how much I'd need?
A "friend" with the proper tools is going to help me with this, as I've
never done A/C work before.

Anyone BTDT or have any suggestions/comments before I proceed? I think the
general net-wisdom was not to convert to R-134, as I would not be happy with
the results.

Thanks,

True, as homeowners forclose, they still need a place to live..

Just rented our house in Atlantic Beach (Outside of Jacksonville Fl) last
week.6 months..not even a nibble. Then 3 offfers in 2 weeks.
(3'rd time's a charm).

Renters had excellent credit untill they had to short-sale their house due
to illness. (Mother's Cancer drove them into the poorhouse.) Went from
paying $2.4K/mo for 1'st and HELOC to less than half for rent. Both good,
stable employment history, 2 Sons are local cops, etc, etc. We took a
chance, but I think it will work out

[MBZ] W126 Repair Proccedures Needed (PDF Format)

2009-01-19 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO

Today, I pulled on the interior handle to get out of my car (Front Drivers
Side) and it appears that the handle is no longer attached to the pivot (?)
via some sort of press-fit pin. (It's there, but I see the hole in the
handle has expanded and the pin almost fell out.), I can get the door to
un-latch from the inside, but it's tricky.

Anyway, I see I've got to replace that chrome handle and some other
associated HW. (As to what, I don't know yet.)

Anyone have the proccedure to remove/replace (and I'm guessing at this) the
door panel, handle, etc, etc. in PDF format?I KNOW the manuals used to
be somewhere on the web, but I can't find them.

Thanks.

Re: [MBZ] W126 Instrument Panel pulling.

2008-11-07 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO

Chuck, Wilton,

Thanks for your emails with instructions re:intermittent temp guage on a
W126.

I first tried coat hangers wire but found the diameter to be too bigso
I was able to get my hands on some 0.050 steel rod (they fit the opening
between the dash cover and the instrument panel), but could not get enough
grip to pull the panel.so I made some handles out of some leftover 3/8
square al stock, 2 in long. Drilled some 0.052 holes in the center, even
milled a slot and peened the bent wire to hold it in place and rounded the
edges on a belt sander to make them more comfortable. Will try this
weekend to pull the instrument panel and check for loose connections before
I go searching for a new guageprovided SWMBO does not have too much of
a Honey-do list for me this weekend.

BTW, when I used the wire alone, I really had to pull HARD to get even 1
side to budge. (which is why I added handles) Should that panel be in
really tight? Any other tricks?

thanks,

[MBZ] Intermittent Temp Gauge

2008-10-31 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO

The Temp gauge on my 1990 350SDL sometimes jumps from it's normal 85C to
being pegged past 120C. No a slow ramp-up, like the temp is actually
rising, but an a instaneous jump. 1'st time it scared the crap out of me
and shut her down quickly and checkednot hot all and plenty of AF.
Just as fast as it jumped past 120C, it returned to 85Cafter going over
a small bump in the road. Now, I can almost make it jump on command by
giving the dash a short wrap with my knuckles. My thought was a loose
connection, but I've been told that the gauges sometimes go bad...That
true?

Noware the instrument clusters (Temp, Oil Pressure, Gas Gauge) on
the 350SDL's the same as the older 300SD/SDL's? I can get my hands on one
of them cheaply, or do I need to find one specifically for the 350? Dealer
prices are a joke.(If we did not know that already)

Thanks..

[MBZ] Front brake pads too Big for a W126?

2008-10-28 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO

Changed the front brake pads on my W126 over the weekend. Noticed that the
metal backing plate BARELY fit into opening on the calliper, even after
cleaning out all the accumulated brake dust, detritus, etc, and the pads
were thick enough to barely fit between the calliper and the rotor.
Problem (I think) was that on the metal backing plate, Mercedes put
some (hardened glue, paint, who knows) on the backside and edges
which caused them not to fit. Removed it with a file and they slid right
in. Don't remember this "stuff" on previous pads.

What changed? Thaught maybe there was some kind of spec that said the
finished brake pad had to be a certain size to fit inside the calliper. Am
I missing something?

[MBZ] JEA Rates in JAX

Bill R,

Spoke to my Friends in Mayport last night..no increase in their
electric bill (this month), although they did mention that JEA was granted
a 17% rate increase this year, as they had the cheapest electric in
Florida. Don't know if you're seeing any of that, yet.

Bill,

It's a 3br/2ba 1150sf ranch, full-time rental, just renovated and listed
with Stockton. We've dropped the price already. It's in the Oak Harbor
Development, off A1A going towards Mayport, right across from B & M Bait
and Tackle. The ICW is about 500 yards down the end of the street, with a
boat ramp in the development. It's right near the Wonderwood Bridge that
avoids all the traffic headed downtown into Jax. 5 minutes from the
Mayport Naval Station's front gate. For someone working at the base, it's
an excellent location. Rumor is they may bring a Nuclear Carrier down from
Norfolk (with about 5,000 jobs) and then I KNOW we'll have it rented. (See
attached file: IMG_4097.JPG)

Since it just changed ownership (From my Father in Law to my wife and I)
We've been cancelled by State Farm and looking for other insurance. (at
about 2X the price). Any leads?

Yeah, our friends in Mayport have several properties in Jax Beach and
Neptune Beach and always have them rented. Maybe uncertainty with the
economy is causing folks to stay put.

As for my trip in June, we were in town for about 48 hours to take care of
everyting with the lawyers, contractors, etc. As far as fishing, going to
Singletons or driving to Saint Augustine for Shrimp at O'Steens, just no
time...

Don't know about thatI estimate 1/2 of that is due to a leaking front
seal and valve cover gasket...for starters. I leave small puddles wherever
I go. It smokes very little too.

And I'm not going to obsess about it, either. It's paid for many years ago
and the economics of spending twice what the vehicle is worth to fix this
problem does not make good economic sense, so I'm just going to keep
driving it and enjoying it as long as I can

Anyone, What's the failure mechanism of this "rod bender"? Does the
engine self distruct? Just burn more oil? Throw a rod? Does anybody know?
I've spoken to Dr. Booth several times, and I know he said (and others have
repeaded), it will "eventually" fail, but then, most of our beloved diesel
engies will eventually "fail" too. If anyone knows, I'd love to hear.

Bought one new in 1990, 4 cyl stickonly way I would have bought one as
the auto slushbox was a slug.

Only left me stranded once with a bad airflow sensor, other than that,
regular maintenance is all it required.

Got totaled about 18 months ago when some airhead collage student on a cell
phone rammed my wife, while stopped at a light doing about 40 MPH. (Seat
broke, she was OK; rear crumple zone did it's job, though) Still have the
aux fan I got from a junkyard (Paid over $125, used) in my
garage.if anyone wants one. Yes, parts are expensive.

First of all, based on the experience of this list, I'll stick to the

In the 11+ years I owned the car, this is the 3'rd time I needed to "top
off" the R12. About every 4-5 years it looses enough to make the system not
cool as good as it should, so I think I'll stick to just topping off with
R-12. Each time, it took less than a pound. BTW, I've also located a local
establishment who can help me out.

One question: Do I need to be concerned with adding additional oil to the
system? Or is there a way to check? (I have not located the dipstick on
the compressor. )

Thanks, again.

[MBZ] A/C Retrofit on a 126

2008-08-04 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO
Once again, I ask the MB Gods for their net-wisdom.

The A/C in my 1990 350SDL (now at 270K Miles) is not cooling like it
should (OK for the low 80's, but above that, fugataboutit). My old
supplier of R-12 does not carry it any anymore, so...I guess I need to
convert the system over to what, R-134?

Does anyone have any experience with how well the system cools after being
converted? Any alternatives? (Other then sweating in the heat like I've
done for most of the summer before I traced down why my compressor would
not kick in?)

Are we forgetting that in the last 10 years or so, everyone's been buying
those big SUV's and Minivans that get 10-15 MPG instead of smaller, more

Prices are up because of demand. If we conserve and demand drops, I'm sure
prices will follow.hopefully.

That's not to say the oil co's aren't taking advantage of the situaition.
Also, if crude is traded in dollars, and we've devalued our currency, how
much has cude gone up just due to that?

A while ago, my local dealer sent out a letter stating they were no longer
giving Mercedes (Mostly C class) cars as loaners due to mounting costs.

Now there's an Enterprise car rental desk right next to the service

loaner..

We'll never see a Blutec diesel loaner here. Years ago, when I bought my
1'st new BMW (1979 320 I), my dealer used to give me a 530 i stick as a
loaner, regurlarly when I brought my car in. When he did, I'd take the

it closed.

[MBZ] OT: VISA's stupid limit on fuel purchases

2008-03-31 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO
Just fueled up a couple of days ago...$92 Bucks and change @ $4.29
/Gal. OUCH Used my VISA Check card at my favorate Hess Station. No
limit issues for me, but typically, when I see the pump, the guy ahead of
me (poor guy) pumped $200 worth.

Must be a regional/station specific thing.

[MBZ] O'Steens in St. Augustine

2008-03-31 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO
Bill,

Just talked to our locals in Mayport. They had dinner there 2 weeks ago.
The place is alive and well, just surrounded by road construction and
widening of the road on the other side of the street. (Thank God)

They're closed Sundays and Mondays in the slow season, so if you called
then, maybe that's why there was no pickup. If you DO go down there, Tell
Charlene, (the gal at the window who takes names and calls you when your
table is ready), that Angelo from NY, the one who always tries to pay by
check or credit card sent ya

On every trip down, at least ONCE, sometimes, twice, the 4 us will jump
into their 350SDL (Obligatory MB Content) with either a bottle of wine, or
Tanqueary or Stolie and the appropriate Mixers and head for O'Steens.
Cocktails are served either on the way down A1A or in the parking lot,
waiting for dinner. Afterwards, it's a trip to Savannah Sweets in St. A
for pralines, a stop at the Gate station for lottery tickets and the trip
back home.

Our MONTH of April is already booked up, So, we'll probably be down in May
sometime.

[MBZ] Singletons.....and a picture

2008-03-29 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO

Yah, the decor at Singleton's is kinda casual and has a local ambiance to
it. Ever been there at low tide in the summer? Refreshing!

Bill, where do you live down there? My wife and I just inhereted a house
in Oak Harbor (Off Mayport Road) after my father in law died 2/21 in Fleet
Landing, which was our most recent trip to JAX. . (Burrial in NJ is
tomorrow). We'll be down to clean/renovate/rent it out soon..

I'll let you know when we're back in town.

As for Safe Harbor Seafood, It's on par, price-wise with Singleton's but
Looks better; Smells better and a good place to buy fresh seafood, too.
BTW, Most places down in Mayport sell "Wild caught" Mayport Shrimp, as
well as the Farm Raised crap; Don't just assume because the shrimp boats
are parked outside the fish is local.

Gene's Seafood is about halfway between Atlantic and Beach on Penman Road.
They've got weeknight specials. 18, (I think) shrimp plus 2 sides and
hushpuppies. for something like $8.99 and others.

O'Steens is a no-reservations, cash-only place, and depending on the night,
be prepared to wait, sometimes up to 2 hours. It's in St. Augustine about
1/2 mile east of the Bridge of Lyons Bridge. Worth the drive down A1A from
the beaches. We usially drive down, have cocktails in the parking lot
while waiting for our names to be called.

And 40 degrees and rain in NY makes me appreciate my trips to northeast
florida even more.

Which place closed due to road construction in the area? Did not see
anything major last month.

Singleton's......fron the side. => (See attached file: 122_2236.JPG)

[MBZ] Singleton's in Mayport

2008-03-28 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO
Bill, Rusty:

Did not think ANYBODY on this list knew of Singleton's Seafood Shack in
Mayport! (BTW, my friend with the 91 350SDL "maybe" for sale is right on
Palmer Street, accross from Sigleton's)

Another nice place down the street is Safe Harbor Seafood Coright where
the gambling ships used to leave Mayport. Does not have the "Charm" of the
Garbage dumpster at the front door...but good food also.

Also, Try Gene's Seafood on Pennman Road..Great Shrimp too.and a
bargain.

Ever been to O'Steens in Saint Augustine?

Damn, wish I was there now instead of 40 Degree rain in beautiful downtown
Wappinger Falls, NY..

What's everyone in town for? Amelia Island or TPC?

[MBZ] Small Claims Court

2008-01-23 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO
About 10 years ago, my wife's car broke down out of town and she had to
get it towed to the shop...some unknown shop, who did a reasonably good job
of repair, 'cept he caused about $800 worth of body damage towing the
car

Words went back and forth, etc, etc, Was not going to accept
responsibility, damage was there alrady, etc, etc. Did not argue with him,
just sued him personally in small calims court (not the business) and won.
Took 2 or 3 trips to court, IIRC. (Big woop, he said he was not paying a
nickle) Fast worward about 10 years...get a call from his widow's
attorney about this judgementpays me with interest, about $1.5K to
settle.

Just had to wait for my money. Key was getting judgement on him
personally, not his business.

Re: [MBZ] National Health Insurance

2008-01-11 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO
I know this WW2 retired Navy veteran, 28 years with 100% disability, now
83.Takes home more than I gross.

Also has this thing, "Tricare for Life" which just about pays 100% of
EVERYTHING of all his (and his wife's) surgeries, hospital stays, ER bills,
etc. Got him a lift chair...100% Covered; Drugs, 100% Covered, O2
delivered to the house: 100% Covered. etc, etc. I've seen the
bills,...Amazing. But then again, don't know how much of the local Medical
community caters to the military in Jacksonville, Fl. From what I've seen
personally, it's pretty darned good with a military ID card and Tricare for
Life.

Problem is, he does not realize how luckey he really has it.

[MBZ] 1991 350SDL Market Value?

2007-10-12 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO
Hi again.

My friend in Jacksonville, Florida has her 1991 350SDL she's considering
getting rid of. (I think the decision is based on what she can get for the
car; She's considering selling it due to a family illness and does not
need a 3'rd car.). Purchased used from a Mercedes dealership in 1996 with
about 70K miles with a new, factory replacement engine. Uses ZERO oil
between 3K oil changes, garaged since purchased, now with ~170K miles. .
In above average condition and ran well when I drove it a few months ago.

Now I KNOW this is a tough crowd when it comes to these 3.5L "rodbender"
engines, but is the longevity of the factory replacement engines better
than the originals? What might a car like this fetch on the open market?
