[MBZ] OT - Wireless Router

2011-12-17 Thread LWB250
I can't believe the last copy of this was nailed by the spam filters.  Holy,
Kaleb, can you make it any harder to post a message these days?

I am getting ready to purchase a new wireless router for the house, and despite
looking around at what's currently on the market, I'm not terribly impressed.
Here are the features I need:

Gigabit ethernet (two ports)
Dual Band 802.11n
NAT
QoS
DHCP
Client/security management (such as ToD control. MAC address filtering)

I don't care about:
USB ports
NAS capabilities

I'm not a brand snob, so it really doesn't matter whose it is - I just want
something that will do the things listed above, and do them well.  Anything
else is fluff.

TIA,

Dan

Re: [MBZ] TDI, was:Secret Message for Rusty

2011-12-03 Thread LWB250
Prior to my last car purchase I looked carefully at Jettas and Passats, with
the Jetta wagon being high on my list.

I found, through non-scientific research, that the 1.8l engine could be a
potential time bomb if not properly maintained.  That pushed me away from any
cars with that powerplant.

The remaining things I took away from this exercise was that VWs, while in
general are good cars, seem to have a potential for a lot of little niggling
issues and parts are expensive relative to similar cars in their class.

Too bad, as I really like Jettas and would still like to have one

A couple years ago (2008?) a friend bought (against my advice) an '01 Jetta
1.8T. Quick car but it had obviously been neglected, rear shocks were toast
among other things.

It had something like 105,000 miles and his Indy said to do the timing belt. He
put it off waiting for a 110,000 mile service. Before another week passed the
timing belt snapped and that was all she wrote. He'd owned the car maybe 2
months and still owed around $10k.

So a $3k rebuild later he was back on the road but constantly nickle and dimed
to death. He finally traded it on a Kia or some such Asian driving appliance.

My point here is not that a Jetta is a bad car but one where neglect will lead
to an especially bad experience.

The TDI is reportedly a decent engine but VW diesels don't do well being
flogged.  The italian tunup is not something you want to do.  Drive them
gently and they will do OK.  I'm talking mostly about the older NA
diesels; don't know to what extent this applies to the TDI.

With any VW do NOT negelect the timing belt maintenance interval.

Re: [MBZ] Refinishing W123 zebrano wood grain

2011-11-29 Thread LWB250
As someone with the experience of a journeyman furniture builder, I can tell
you that it is near impossible to do anything with MB veneer pieces due to the
very thin (about 1/64) material and the type of finish they use.  You can
easily take a swipe with the wrong grit sandpaper and go right through the
veneer.

I have suggested to people who want to give it a try to grab some pieces from
their local pick and pull and try it - it's a good learning experience.

Drew Tibken of Heritage Woodworks is the only guy I have ever met that can do
this, and he has invested a lot of money and time into the process.  I have
seen how he does the work, and it's truly a long and involved process that he
developed over the years.  If you ever saw it, you would recognize that Drew's
work is nothing short of world class.

happen.

I actually had an MB guy show me the differences between a factory and
aftermarket seal, and he wasn't even pointing out potential issues regarding
the materials, just design.

The differences can be subtle, but like any engineered product, are there for a
reason.

I also like to apply the amortization approach - divide the cost by the miles
the previous one lasted, and see the difference in costs.

Just my $0.02.

Also, if I can find it, there was a great write up by a VW guy I knew from my
VW days about aftermarket rubber. In his case it involved Asian suppliers of
reproduction Karmann Ghia rubber parts.

Re: [MBZ] mixing diesel and gasoline

2011-11-26 Thread LWB250
I was wrenching in tech school when these came out.  I can assure you that they
were built on the small block 350 platform, with a different crank and pistons,
I believe.

I can't comment on the top end, as I don't recall any details about it.  I will
say that the Roosamaster distributor pump has very tight clearances in the fuel
distributor portion, and lubrication from the fuel is critical to its proper
operation.  If you ran anything but diesel in one of these (Roosamaster)
whether they were on a GM diesel conversion or anything else, I can guarantee
it will fail within minutes.

There was a known issue with mains failing due to the bolts not being adequate
to handle the pressures on the crank.  GM later drilled out the bolt holes and
used longer bolts.  I suspect the problems manifested themselves in the top
ends as well, although I never saw this myself.

A little known fact:  There was also a 260 CID converted diesel that was only
sold in Oldsmobiles for a couple of years, sometime in the late 70s.  It, like
it's larger counterpart, was an equally disasterous engine.  The difference was
that the block was sleeved for some reason, effectively reducing the volume of
the compression chamber.  We had one of these in the shop, and were totally
perplexed by it.

Call it what you want.  Compared to even an old OM621 or an OM636, or a JD, IH,
Cummins, Detroit, Cat, Perkins, or even a petter, it is a crappy engine.

That is purportedly just a rumor. Theres no doubt GM cheaped out on head
bolts and the 350 diesel apparently makes a great base to build a gasser
engine on but its not a dieselized gasser.

It was very common to see 81-84 models down here in the late 90s where the

And this was even on garage kept cars.

We had a 5.8 about 6 weeks ago in central Va. - 1st (and last I hope) time I
ever felt a earthquake!   As you said, it's a strange thing - not what I
expected - I was in the garage when it started - lasted about 10 seconds - I
walked outside and my neighbors were coming outside looking at each other! We
all had the same puzzled look in our face.

My 1st thought was a terrorist bombing (probably an over-reaction ;-)) or an
accidental explosion somewhere - we have a number of manufacturing facilities
around that I thought may have had a problem.

I hope you didn’t have any damage?  Need to check foundation and chimneys - any
brick/concrete/block structure can come apart -

Take care -

[MBZ] OT - Network Nuttiness

2011-11-04 Thread LWB250
I am at my wit's end right now, so I'm tossing this up for anyone to take a
shot...

I just reconfigured my cable router at my new house as a pass-through device in
order to allow my Airport Extreme to handle the DHCP duties. However, in my
haste to do so, I forgot that my Drobo FS has a fixed IP address that I set
some time ago when I was using the cable router's DHCP server.

The problem is that the cable router's DHCP server used a 192.168.0.x range,
while my AE uses a 10 dot range.

As a result, my Drobo is no longer visible, nor can I connect to it. And no, I
don't recall what the static IP address was that I set for it in the old
range, which is the rub.

I tried connecting to it over ethernet directly with my MBP and multicasting
using the 224.0.0.1 range, which has worked for me in the past. Unfortunately,
using Netstat to do this yielded nothing.  I also pinged every address in the
192.168.0.x range up to 30, which would have been the highest I would have gone
for a static IP in that range.

I could reconfigure everything back to the old range to be able to once again
connect to the Drobo FS and recover the IP address, but I would rather not.

Any suggestions for identifying the IP of the Drobo, or what I may be doing
wrong?

Thanks,

Dan

The Fluke 83 has been the standard in the electronics and electrical industry
since it's inception.  I have one that is probably 15-20 years old, easy, and
it's still going strong.  I have sent it back once to get it recalibrated,
which was probably unnecessary, since it was within spec in nearly every range
tested.

Even if you can get one used, do it.  It's like a good German tool - you'll

$250 ages ago is $399 now for a new one.  I looked them up.    New or
used, a fluke 80-something is still a multi-hundred dollar meter (new
price.)

Many people can't justify that for occasional GP tests.  I went for
years with a multimeter ($20) that the lowest range was K-ohms.   It
was a very small meter and fit in the MB toolbox I carried in the
trunk.

I bought a radio junk one in 1989 that I really liked, and it is
still good.  It was  $39.99 and same with alligator clips that the
test leads slipped into so you could work one handed, or no handed.
That was really handy.  It had a low ohm scale that was sensitive
enough to determine a bad GP, although it was always higher than
actual.

As a general rule with a cheap meter, continuity indicates a good
plug and no continuity indicates bad.  This system does not work when
one is shorted.  That you can test with a handful of strip fuses.
remove one plug, replace fuse; test.  When the fuse does not burn

Is there something different as far as mortgages up your way compared to how we

I ask because I seem to recall that you could only take out a mortgage for a
fairly short period (5 years?) when I had a friend and business associate who
was being relocated to Canada.

He was responsible for the western portion of Canada, and believe it or not,
was seriously considering buying a home in Canmore, AB, until something came up
regarding mortgages and a significant risk/expense.

This was in the early 90s, so it may have been the market that was scaring
him.  Ultimately, the company relocated him to Bellingham, WA, which isn't in
the Canadian Rockies, but a nice place none the less.

[MBZ] OT - Water Softener?

2011-10-21 Thread LWB250
http://gallery.me.com/dpenoff#100298

Got this device in my new house which has absolutely (and I mean it!) no
identifying information on it anywhere.  I have been over every square inch of
it, and not a manufacturer's name, model number, nada.

I am assuming it's a water softener, as it has a timer with a consumption
wheel that counts down from 2200 gallons, at which time it recycles.  The
same knob has a Backflush and a Recycle position as well.

There is a reservoir next to it that was empty when I moved in, but for the
heck of it I filled it with a couple of 40 pound bags of softener salt and set
it to recycle.

If anyone can identify this thing I would appreciate it.  When I have time
(ha!) I may crack open the timer box and see if there is anything in there that
might identify the maker.

Thanks,

Dan

What can I say?  I'm a purist when it comes to cars, and while the hot rods are
nice looking, they simply have no appeal.  I would rather see (and drive) a
vintage Benz that's all original than have something that's tuck-and-rolled
with an airbrushed paint job

I had a 54 Buick with the big electric razor grille similar to the one in his
shop.  What a beast that was!  I recall dropping the radio out of the dash to
repair it, and you practically needed a floor jack for it.  Had a rear seat
heater, too, and started by pushing the accelerator all the way to the floor to
crank it.  That car probably had 500 pounds of chrome on it.

Paid a whopping $850 for it back in 1980.  Bought it from the wife of the
original owner, an actual barn find out by Terre Haute, IN.

Sadly, I sold it a month later for $1800.  I kick myself when I think of it.

Apart from that, I normally  think most used items should not cost more than
about half of what it might cost to buy a new one like it. Maybe more if it
looks to be exceptional and I can see it run etc.

For what it is worth, I bought a 10Kw standby generator last year for $550.
Older than that but not ancient. Twin cylinder Wisconsin engine - propane
fueled. I am no expert on this sort of thing but includes the auto switch
over setup etc. IE - it is connected to line voltage, and if the power
fails, it is supposed to start up on its own and run until the power comes

No breaker panel etc with it.

From what I can tell, CarFax bases their reports on DMV information and
whatever is voluntarily entered by dealerships, say, if they took the car on
trade and serviced it at that time.

It seems to be hit or miss for the most part, from what I see.

The one good thing is that it more or less gets you the DMV data, so you can at
least see if there is anything funky as far as the history, especially on
mileage.  In fact, that's one thing that CF will flag, if the mileage is weird.

I look at it this way - it's cheap insurance, and in the grand scheme of
things, the expense is minimal relative to the potential for problems.  Sort of
like a PPI.  I wouldn't buy a used car without one, as it gives you a point of
reference as to the car's condition, and is also a negotiating tool in some
cases.

When I bought the Ford Focus wagon I now drive last August, I bought it from an
independent dealer, but had the local Ford dealer do the PPI.  Cost me $79 and
change, got me the complete maintenance history of the one-owner dealer
maintained car.  It effectively cinched the deal.

2011-10-02 Thread LWB250
You could get a multiplexer and feed separate boxes to dedicated channels, but
that's a nightmare when it comes to management.

The Elgato devices enable PCs to display cable analog/digital/terrestrial
television signals.  They can't play or stream anything to a device other
than the PC they are connected to.

What I am most interested in is to find someone who currently uses Verizon/FIOS
and see what their opinion is of the dumb boxes they offer for additional
TVs, and if there are any analog signals in their transmission line at all.  If
the extra TVs had the initial tier of channels available on the existing
signal a box would not be necessary.

The vacuum T on the main line between the pump and the brake booster is

Amazingly, the complete line used to be relatively inexpensive.

And don't try going with just the line itself - it's nearly impossible to get
it on the hose barbs 100% of the way.  Don't ask me how I know...

Re: [MBZ] FIOS (Verizon) vs. Brighthouse

2011-10-02 Thread LWB250
Right now I can get all of their digital and HD channels (we've never had the
premium channels) with phone and 35Mbps Internet including a whole-house DVR
and a total of six (6) TV boxes, three which are full-blown boxes with
everything, three that work with the whole house DVR and have all of the cable
channels (no PPV or interactive menuing) for $127.00/month.

That's with a two year commitment and lifetime whole house DVR.

I'm paying $120/month for two boxes, a regular DVR, phone and 15Mbps internet
with Brighthouse.

I would prefer to go with FIOS, myself, but mainly due to the internet speed. I
had this at the inlaws, and it screamed compared to BH.

FWIW, I called BH the other day to see if they would come to the table and just
give me the next tier of Internet speed (25Mbps) to keep me as a customer, and
they blew me off.

SWMBA did the local franchise for verizon fios.  then verizon sold to frontier,
who killed fios tv and is using satellite.    That said, the deal was you got
three set top boxes free.  That is no longer the deal.  Now each box is $10 for
analog TV to get signal.  If you have the cable card slot, you can rent that
instead.

The deduction for multiple box is negligable.  It does increase per box, but
only $2 or so

Re: [MBZ] Best source for carfax report?

2011-10-02 Thread LWB250
South Florida, specifically.  I can't vouch for the rest of the state, although
everything I ever bought around here (Tampa) was legit.

I used to have a branch in Pompano with a former employer, which I would visit
every week or two.  More often than not, I would have someone from one of the
lists at the time, especially the SL list, who would ask me to check out a car
in that area for them.

If you drive down Collins Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale it is literally covered with
independent high line car dealers for blocks.  Lots of bling, pretty cars on
turntables, etc.

Every single one I ever looked at was a bondo beater.  Especially the 190SLs,
which seemed to be especially popular at the time.  Got to the point where I
just told them not to bother, as it wasn't worth our time.

I spoke with a local, who told me the following:

South Florida, specifically Lauderdale and Miami, are essentially the
warehouse club of the islands (Caribbean) and South/Central America. This I
already knew.

Businessmen and their families routinely visit once a month, for example, and
shop til they drop and fill a container to ship back home.

Cars like these are highly desirable in these regions, since few were ever
imported, so it's not uncommon for them to see a car on the Internet and
purchase it sight unseen.

Since these transactions are routinely done with an LC (letter of credit) which
has to be executed before the container ever leaves port, the car is long paid
for before it ever lands in it's new home.

As a result of these less than discerning buyers, who also have no real point
of reference when it comes to condition, and may not care anyway, there is a
cottage industry of dealers who cater to this market in the area.

At least that how I see it.

That being the case, I would defer to the experts, but a rubber cap with a good

I've been following this thread for a bit and trying to read between the
lines to figure exactly where you have a problem.  I think the issue you
have is the pipe joint at the floor slab is leaking?  Otherwise you could
cap it all off and close the wall and be content?

On the off chance my long range Exray vision is working, suggestion as
follows.

Lead is a barrier type seal rather than a contact type seal [ie. PVC pipe
solvent/glue/stuck forever type]  so in this instant the lead has given up
some of it's barrier effect and needs refreshed... My choice would be to
use a MAP gas torch [propane torch but with MAP gas cylinder, produces
greater heat] and simply heat the lead in the joint and reflow it.

The melt point on lead is a little over 400 degrees to full liquid state,
the melt point of cast iron pipe is well over 2000 degrees so the joint it's
self serves as a cup in place. Apply local heat with the torch, and in a few
minutes the old leaky joint is resealed.  Let the lead cool without moving
the pipe so contact integrity is preserved.  No new lead flying around to
violate more EPA rules and you should be good.

Use caution with fire in the wall space of course. Keep a bucket of water
handy in case you heat the studs instead of the pipe. If you have wall board
still on one side of the open wall it will serve as a barrier however carpet
and flamables on the other side of that should be moved back for safety.
[Don't want to build a fire in the other room do you?]

Grant...

[MBZ] FIOS (Verizon) vs. Brighthouse

2011-10-01 Thread LWB250
In preparation for the move to a new house, I am struggling with choosing a
service provider for my internet and cable TV.

We currently have Brighthouse, and while their service is very good, the
internet aspect, specifically speed, is not close to FIOS.  I can get a better
package from FIOS with higher speeds for less than Brighthouse.  That makes the
decision easy, right?

The rub is the number of televisions we have in the house.  The wife is  TV
freak, and there's one in nearly every room.

With Brighthouse, since their TV signal is partially analog, it's a simple
matter of plug and play when it comes to basic cable.  Most newer TVs will
resolve their channels and show nearly everything in the lower tiers without
the need of a separate box.  This means we can have all the TVs she wants and
only have to get boxes for the main TV and the one in our room in order to get
HD/digital/PPV.

FIOS, being 100% digital, requires a box for ANY television as I understand,
even if you only want the basic channel tier.  That means a box for a number of
TVs that are not significant as far as being used regularly.

If anyone out there has FIOS and can give me the straight dirt on how it deals
with a television relative to needing/not needing a separate box to tune in
their signals, I would appreciate hearing about it.

Personally, I would prefer to have FIOS, as when we were bunking at the inlaws,
they had FIOS and it was freakin' fast.  Faster than anything I've ever gotten
out of BH.

Thanks,

Dan

Carfax seems to be the most reliable, but the one gripe I have with them is
lots of time the information is irrelevant or of no real value relative to the
upkeep and maintenance.

Best thing to do is get a PPI from a stealership, IMHO.  That's the best chance

tooth off though it seemed to be pointing correctly.  He said they were real
touchy, not like the old engines.  Anyway, with that fixed it was still
throwing the misfire code on cylinder 7, the mech said that cylinder had no
compression.  So I figured I buggered up something resetting the valves.  So
this (absolutely gorgeous) afternoon I took about half of the top stuff off

cylinder.  Put it all back together, fired
it up and SUCCESS!  Running nice again, no coolant blowing out the back, Rich

leveling the playing field with FIOS, since there is a possibility they'll lose
the customers in the process.

My brother has a vendetta with Comcast in Indianapolis and has sworn that when

This has been the bane of my vintage search.  I want to find a fairly high
powered (+50W) receiver, but there just hasn't been anything on the market of
late.  All the late model SS stuff is junk, IMHO, but there just doesn't seem
to be anything even remotely old in the market that I can find (and I'm talking
local, as I don't want to do the eBay thing.)

Just missed a heck of a Marantz power amp the other day.  Saw the listing, but
it was a really bizarre one, so I skipped over it.  Saw it again and realized
what they had and called right away.  Amp was gone, but the rack mount cassette
deck was still for sale. Yuck. And this was one of the old Marantz amps with
the big meters and knobs on the front (rack mount, too.)

Darn.

Might think it's at full throttle all the time

As a side note, both the previous transmission installs were .409 boxes out

He initially got banned over our dust up.

The whole reason I refused to return was because Easley reinstated George
shortly after our conflict, but I was not given that opportunity.  When I went
to Stu over this, he blew me off and sent me to Easley.  Easley wanted to know
how I knew George had been reinstated, and I gave him copies of George's posts
after he returned.  When asked how I got them, I told him I was subscribed to
the list under several alias'.  He demanded that I reveal and unsub my alias
accounts before I could be reinstated, implying that I was being dishonest by
maintaining alias accounts.  At the time I was using them for archiving, as I
didn't want to stuff up my main mailbox with the list traffic, but wanted to
have my own off line archive for reference purposes.

I told him to stick it.

Needless to say, Easley is out of the picture now as well.  So much for being a
nice guy.

Where in Chicago?

Understand that Chicago proper is not that big, but the Tri-State area,
as it's known, is probably the size of Rhode Island. To traverse it from north
to south can easily take over two hours or more on a day with good traffic.

Literally hundreds of little incorporated towns that each have their own
atmosphere, way of life, etc. You can get big city or rural life within a
fairly small range, depending on where you need to be for work.

I don't think the climate is going to be significantly different.  Cost of
living will probably be lower, depending on where you want to land.

Good Midwestern work ethic, lots of good people, relatively safe in most places
and easy to get around unless you're living in the city.

Before anyone can comment more specifically, you're going to have to come up
with some details...

Those were the lists at Richarde Sexton's mbz.org Web site.  They continue to
be archived there.

Marshall lurked on the original Banned list, IIRC, but left due to the naughty
language.

The problem with the narrow subject lists was that there were too many people,
myself included, who had interests and cars that spanned multiple lists, and it
made it difficult at times to keep things straight as well as having limited
traffic due to the narrow subject matter.

They were never boring, it's just that traffic could be sporadic at times due
to the limited number of members.  The Veteran's list still exists on Kleb's
site, but I haven't seen traffic on it in months.

Motorcycle training teaches you to pick an end point, that is, the spot where
you want to end up at, and focus on that.  It is applied primarily as a means
to make turns and not under or over steer, as new riders are oft to do.

If you ride, or for that matter, drive, try it some time.  It's amazingly
simple and works quite well.

Alabama is another state that does this.  I used a title service when I bought
my 1962 300SE because it would have cost me several thousand dollars to clear
the title in California.  The PO and their estate had not registered the car
for some years, and California insists that you pay all the back registration

I got a bill of sale from the estate attorney and sent it off to Alabama with a
check for $150 or thereabouts.

Two days later I had a clear title in my hands.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Vintage Stereo

2011-09-10 Thread LWB250
The one concern I have about these is the limited power of my Fisher - about 28
watts per channel at 4 ohms.  According to everything I read, these speakers
are pretty power hungry and require a fair amount of juice to really perform.

I know they need new socks, which is not a big deal, but I want to be able to
listen to them, too.

Thanks!

Going to go and look at some Magnaplanar speakers tomorrow.  Should be
 interesting.

Magnificent speakers.  Some of the best imaging and sound ever available.
Extremely room- and placement-sensitive.  They _really_ want to be out
in the room and not jammed against a wall or in a corner.  Not much
bass.  Might be somewhat amplifier-sensitive too.  A friend has these,
loves 'em.

2011-09-10 Thread LWB250
I understand the placement issues, as I had looked at these types of speakers
years ago. Fortunately, I don't see that being an issue in our new home.

I do, however, have concerns about the Fisher being able to drive them
adequately.

The Fisher does have a summed center channel output, believe it or not.  That
will allow me to set up a powered sub that should fill in any low end gaps.

Again, thanks!

Luckily, I married the right woman.

Wattage may be an issue. The bass may be non-existant.

On the other hand, my '82 vintage Klipsch Cornwalls don't care how little

Just my point.  I complained, begged, cajoled, pointed out my loyalty to State

only response was to point out how expensive insurance is in Florida because of
the no fault laws and excessive insurance fraud.

I told her I was going to shop around, so this should not come as a surprise.

As for things like the redundant coverage, well, that's her fault for not
asking the right questions or simply not caring.  I find it interesting that
the Allstate guy asked me numerous questions about other coverages I had, such
as medical and disability, in order to put this together.  He pointed out at
least two instances where I had overlapping or redundant coverages.  I never
got those questions from the State Farm agent, just her sympathy about how hard
times are right now...

Did you ever *ask* your State Farm guy if he could find a way to reduce

We didn't have this problem when we lived elsewhere - Indiana, Wisconsin, etc.
They were very competitive and reasonably priced.  Here in Florida they are
obscenely expensive on everything but life insurance, which has little to do
with where you live.

State Farm has done a great job in the past, for what little we have needed
them for, knock on wood.  I simply can't justify paying out nearly $10k/year
for all of my insurance when I can get the same thing for less elsewhere.

From my perspective in Indiana... we have everything with State Farm,
never a moment's trouble with any claims, and the only options that are
significantly cheaper are companies you've never heard of, which I don't
trust.  I did try this once, I moved all my insurance to a company my
bank recommended when we refinanced about 8 years ago.  I never got a
clear statement from them as to what my coverages were and every time
they did send me something the numbers were different.  After a few
months of not really feeling confident that our house was insured at
all, I switched back to State Farm.

I would be patient and continue to apply the PBBlaster/Acetone mix.  Despite
having encountered similar fittings on older MBs that lived in the North, I
never had one of these fittings get boogered up as long as I left penetrating
oil on it for at least 24 hours and used flare nut wrenches (your use is duly
noted - good job!)

It always amazed me that they would come apart, especially some of the ones
that were really corroded.  I can't recall any other brand of vehicle I was
successful in doing the same.

I started working on replacing the brake hoses on my W116.  The fittings
where the hard line meets the hose don't look too bad but they are not
turning.  I am using a flare nut wrench.  I have PB Blaster on them now.
I may mix up some more ATF/acetone.

Thought about getting a micro-torch so I could heat up the fitting on
the end of the hose a bit.  I think my regular blow torch might be too

Just brought my new pair of MG-1s home.  $75.

Everything works, no sign of delamination of the tweeter wires, sock is
pretty good shape with only one area where there is a little discoloration.
Looks like oak frames, all of which are on good shape with no dings or wear
that I can find.

Amazingly, the bases are really clean - most of the ones I looked at online had
bases that were worn or chewed up.

I'll get them hooked up to the Fisher a little later tonight, but I don't have
a good place for them at this point, so it will just be a test.

Whoo-hoo!

[MBZ] OT - Sort of - Car Insurance

2011-09-09 Thread LWB250
Just got done going over our insurance with an Allstate guy.

Long story short, same coverage as we've had with State Farm, $1600.00 cheaper
a year.

He found some redundant coverages and also pointed out some things that we were
paying for that we really didn't need, that is, things that overlapped with
stuff like our long and short term disability, for instance.

Anyway, after being with State Farm for over 30 years, I am understandably
reluctant to change, but the fiscal aspect makes this a no-brainer.

I am interested in any listers out there who have been with Allstate for a
while and your experiences

Thanks,

Re: [MBZ] OT - Sort of - Car Insurance

2011-09-09 Thread LWB250
It's important to understand some things regarding State Farm and Florida:

1.) State Farm no longer writes home insurance in Florida.  They recently
submitted a request to increase the premiums of the current homeowner's
policies in Florida something in the neighborhood of 150%.  This is after they
have already raised premiums over 80% in the past 4-5 years.

2.) They will write me a homeowner's policy here, because I have continuous
coverage.  Their premiums are more than 2x every other insurer I got quotes
from for the exact same coverage. After the first year they are no longer
obligated to insure me.  At that time they will drop me.  This is a given.

3.) When I moved back to Florida and found out how badly they were raping me, I
got the, But you have guaranteed insurability!  Of course I do - I am paying
for it!

4.) When I pleaded with my agent of nearly 15 years to do something to help me
cut my auto premiums, all I got was a diatribe about how rampant auto insurance
fraud is in Florida, and they're just passing the costs along.

Long story short, State Farm is here because they can justify the outrageous
premiums they charge.  When competitors can give me the same products and
services for 20% less and be a reputable (if that's possible for any insurance
company!) nationally rated company, there is something wrong.

I am going to give my State Farm agent the chance for a rebuttal, but I don't
expect them to move from where they are cost-wise.

Guys - I pay over $6k/year for three 5-6 year old cars with no accident
histories.  I do have a 19 year old in the house, but he gets a good student
and good driver discount.  Allstate is the first company I gave a chance to
compete for my business, and they can knock that down by $1200-$1400/year for
the same coverage.  That tells me that State Farm is getting fat, dumb and
happy off my loyalty.

This should be interesting.  I will be really curious as to the tack they take
when I give them a chance to respond...

Thanks to everyone for their input.

My attitude about that approach is that if I am such a good and loyal (30+
years) customer, why weren't they giving me the best deal up front?  If I do
the ping-pong thing and they suddenly drop their prices, what does that tell me
about their business ethic?

Let's take advantage of our oldest, most loyal customers - because we can/they

That's bad business practice, no matter how you play it.  Sure, maybe they can

It's essentially a heat pump that extracts heat from ambient air and uses it to
heat the water.

Very efficient - costs about $200/year to run (or less). If you live in a
warmer climate, the waste energy from it is cold air and the higher ambient
temperatures make it more efficient.

 1. Open the master cylinder cover, lay a clean cloth over it [stray

 length
of fuel hose to the squirt tube and the other end to the brake bleed
 nipple.
I like to use a generous length here so I can work outside the wheel

The various power or pressure bleeders out there all require adapters of some
sort to fit the master cylinder.

While pressure bleeding is certainly the way to go, and the only way to go in
the instance of ABS systems (I believe), I have gotten along just fine for
years using a vacuum pump (MityVac) and a collection jar.  I like this method
better than pressure bleeding, as you still have to get under the car and get

brake fluid on painted surface.

Now, I will start out by acknowledging that this question is
premature in that I have done no research or checking before asking this
question.

Is there a one-size-fits-all brake bleeder?  I have various cars spannning
the last 50 years, and each seems to have a different master cylinder (M/C)
configuration. The cars are listed below.
Having recently changed a M/C, and having spent considerable time bleeding the
brakes by the tried and true pump the brake pedal by myself method, I thought
surely a pressurized bleeder would save time and aggravation.
Is this true? Is it easy to work? Can I have one bleeder which will do them all?
Confession time - I have never changed brake fluid, unless it was necessary
after opening the system and replacing parts I would like now to be able to do
this on a regular basis.

Came across a set of Ohm Acoustics FRS-15 on CL.  The owner wants $200 for the
pair, says they're in excellent condition, both cosmetically and mechanically.

I may go check them out.

Any opinions on Ohm Acoustics?  I already Googled them and found their web site
and several threads in audio forums on them.  The manufacturer is still around,
and want big $$ for repairs.

Hmm.

I just did an A/B of my Time Windows (no model number on the back, so
I guess they are version 1.0, as it were) and Time Frame 400s.

I think my earlier off-the-cuff assessment was pretty accurate.  The
Time Frames seem to have a sort of built-in smile-shaped frequency
response.  Treble is sharper, almost shrill.  There's much more bass
but it's not at all boomy or thumpy.

The Time Windows have a smooth, warm, even sound all across the
spectrum.  The best way I can describe it is that it's kind of like
listening to vinyl on a good turntable for the first time after
getting used to CDs.  There's definitely much less bass than with the
Time Frames, though. I can see why Jim uses a subwoofer with his Time
Windows.

The differences are really more subtle than I have made them out to
be.  I'm sure non-audiophiles would not be able to tell the
difference, or if they could, wouldn't care.  I would be perfectly
happy with either, I'd just turn down the treble a notch on my preamp
if I were to use the Time Frames.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Natural Gas generators

2011-08-31 Thread LWB250
Liquid withdrawal fuels systems are more efficient and less prone to variances
in ambient temperatures, but the hardware involved makes them pricey.  It's
unusual to see liquid withdrawal unless the location has low ambient
temperatures that would prevent vaporization in the main tank.  Also, there is
some potential for liquid withdrawal systems to have difficulty supplying full
load fuel volumes on initial start if ambient temperatures are low.  Without a
fully functioning block heater, there may not be enough heat available from the
cooling system water jacket to vaporize fuel quickly enough to generate the
volume required for full load.

Also, code does not allow liquid (high pressure) fuel supplies inside of a
building, so the unit has to be outside.

A liquid withdrawal system can easily add $1000 to the cost of a generator set.

If propane, you'll need a big tank because (1) you'll
burn a lot and (2) small tanks may not maintain pressure at high flow rates.

Liquid feed!  The IMPCO fuel evaporator/regulator is
the gold standard here.  Plumbs into the cooling system
to get the heat.

Buy in bulk during the early to mid summer months, as that is when the price is
usually lowest.  Fall has a lot of farmers running grain dryers, so that can
drive up the price later in the year.  Winter, well, you can understand why
prices are higher in the winter

Former business partner had three 1000 gallon tanks on his property.  Worked
out a deal with his brother (next door, two 1000 gallon tanks) and the local
propane supplier to buy once a year in mid summer.  Cash, of course.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Natural Gas generators

2011-08-29 Thread LWB250
Generator hat on

The whole thing when it comes to stationary standby generators is determining
what your critical loads are.  Until you do that, you're just flailing around.

Make a list of must have loads and write down their wattages.

The worst case ones will be small, fractional horsepower motors, like sump
pumps and furnace blowers.  Single phase motors are horribly inefficient when
it comes to starting current, so you've got to have enough reserve to handle
their inrush current.

From there look at things like fridge, freezer, basic lighting, garage door
opener, etc.

Generac and other manufacturers have some good sizing programs on the Web that
allow you to do the calculations.  Just keep in mind that these are general
values and not 100% accurate.  It's a guide to give you an idea of what you
need capacity-wise.

Once you know what you need kW-wise you can start looking.

Stationary sets run off propane vapor or natural gas.  Be careful when
shopping, as propane has a much higher BTU content than natural gas, so
machines are often rated on propane with deration percentages if it's on
natural gas.  Usually you'll see a 10%-15% deration on natural gas.

Install often equals the cost of the unit, so be prepared.  If you can do any
of it yourself this is the place where you can save some serious bucks.  You
will need a licensed electrician to do your transfer switch, unless you're
doing downstream of your main breaker.  This is typical, as a branch circuit
will be run to a transfer switch that feeds a small distribution panel where
your critical loads have been broken out from the main panel.

While it's more expensive, it's foolish (in my opinion) to go with a stationary
generator and not have an automatic transfer switch (ATS).  Think about if you
are away, and the power goes out.  If it's an extended outage, you risk food
loss, possible damage to your home depending on the climate and season, etc.
Sure, it's a peace of mind thing, but the additional cost is minimal in the
grand scheme of things.

Generac has really dialed in the consumer home standby market, and done a good
job with it.  You'll find their products marketed at all the big box home
improvement stores under the Guardian brand, among others.  They have done a
very good job of balancing the price point vs. quality and longevity.  You can
go more expensive, such as a Kohler, but even though I have some bias as a
former employee of both, the Kohler is a premium product that effectively does
the exact same thing the Generac does.

Maintenance is the key to longevity on these, just as it is on your MB, and it
doesn't take any special tools or knowledge.  Change oil and filters annually
and keep it clean and you're pretty much done with it.

If anyone has specific questions they are welcome to send me a PM.

Dan

Mitch Haley m...@voyager.net writes:

By NG, you're talking about a permanently installed automatic backup
 generator?

 1. The $2-5k cost of buying it.
 2. Getting a permit to hook it up.

2.5 paying an electrician to hook it up properly.  This involves a
transfer switch which can be either automatic or manual depending how
much you want to spend.  But if you want something to take over when you
may be away from home, you need the automatic system.

 3. The cost of the NG (which is probably 1/4 the cost of the propane
 that my dad's Generac burns).

A basic 7kw unit for a couple of thousand bucks can run a few mission
critical circuits, like lighting and refrigeration. In my parents'
case, they mainly give up high current 240v items like the water
heater, stove, and dryer. I think there's one 240v circuit, and it's
got the well pump on it.

If all your heating and cooking is done with gas, you should be OK
with a 7k or 10k unit. I think that gives you six 120v circuits and
one 240v circuit, so take a look at your breaker box and see how many
 circuits you consider critical.

[MBZ] OT: Bang Olufsen Beomaster / Vintage Stereo

2011-08-28 Thread LWB250
I have put the word out to the head AV guy in our school district that I want
to re-create a vintage stereo system for my new house.  I don't have any
particular preference for a specific brand, just want to get my hands on some
decent vintage stuff that may need a little TLC so it's reasonably priced.

This guy has a lot of connections in this regards, so the opportunities are
starting to come in.

Yesterday it was a really nice Marantz 2230 and a Fisher 500C, both very nice
units in good condition.  Both a little out of my price range, but the sellers
might be willing to haggle, so these are both in the running.  Given the choice
I would prefer the Fisher, as it's a tube chassis.  I would expect to recap
both and do an LED conversion on the Marantz to get rid of the lamps.

Anyway, got a call today from a guy who has a BO Beomaster 1900 that he simply
doesn't want.  Everything works, but he dug it out of a closet and just wants
it gone.

$20.00

Yes, you read that correctly. Twenty dollars.

I'm going to pick it up from him today or tomorrow.

Not really a vintage machine, but might make for a nice setup in one of the
bedrooms.  Will need to source some of the Euro speaker plugs and a DIN cable
to connect stuff.

Anyone here know anything about BO, other than it's pricey?
