Thank you, Dave SoCal On Jun 27, 2010, at 8:38 AM, Peter Frederick wrote: If it leaks down in a month, likely there will be enough dye at the leak to see. Since you are going to open it to fix the leak, I would suggest a new receiver/dryer or accumulator (depending on the style of AC, I don't know which one Chrysler used), fresh oil in the compressor, and replacing all the 0-rings. If one is bad, the rest aren't far behind! Check the condensate drain for traces of dye, it's possible you have a cracked evaporator. I don't know if this is a common problem on a PT Cruiser, but they DO fail. Ditto for the condenser -- they are subject to corrosion and road damage, being the most vulnerable part of the system and under the most heat and pressure stress. Probably a good idea to clean out the space between rad and condenser, likely it's full of trash. Check the hoses for leaks at the compression fittings, too, especially the high pressure and hot ones. Check the fittings on the compressor as they can leak, notably the high pressure side as the o-rings erode there. Ditto for compressor front seal, although that one may be hard to find. Best to use a thermal conductivity or combustion type leak detector there if you have access to one, as the dye will be present only under the clutch and likely not very visible. Good luck -- I've been hunting for a leak that size on my 300TE for about six years now. Re: [MBZ] OT: programmable thermostats
I would relly like to find a thermostat that I could program on the P.C., upload with a USP cable. I find the programing on mine to be cumbersome. BTW: I have a heat pump. You can tell the PID controller how aggressive its gains need to be, you can set the cycles per hour (not perfectly enforce I'm sure, but will give you better control of how short the run-time is), and it has the adaptive intelligent recovery which learns your house's heat/cool times. It also has seven day programs... you can have unique sleep, wake, away, return temperatures/times for every day. The thermostat is removable so you can program it in your lap, and then stick it back on the wall. The thermostat will also run off the furnace's 24VAC (batteries as well). Also, the thermostat will guarantee that the compressor has five minutes of off time between cycles to prevent damage to the compressor (say there is a power outage or something). Total overkill, but I'm a gadget freak... I have a dual fuel setup... heat pump and 93% gas furnace. Totally overkill for my mild climate, but there is a long and complicated story behind it. Would just do a heat pump next time around. Anyway, I installed the outdoor temp sensor for the thermostat, and it uses the heat pump down to 40F, and the gas furnace after that. I can change that temperature to whatever I want (could do it based on gas vs. electric costs) The thermostat may not be worth the $200 price tag in my area, but as cold as it gets up there you might recover it in fairly short order. Maybe there are some of these hidden settings in your thermostat? All of those settings I talked about are in the hidden install menu. I splurged and bought a Lincoln Mig with the CO2 gar bottle and controls. This to fix sheet metal rust on my Metro I am a decent stick welder. All I got from the Mig was splatter, really looked like crap. I left it in a corner. A trusted friend told me to try flux wire. It worked 100% better! Yes, it left slag to chip off but the weld was decent with penetration. Why? The machine wasn't trying to melt as much wire. YMMV -- Peter T. [MBZ] Miscellaneous Rambling from an old Turkey.
Miscellaneous Rambling from an old Turkey. Maybe one of you wise fellows can tell me what size/type screw is used to retain the outer door handle on a 300SDL. I'm suspecting some thing like a 6mm socket set screw. If it's very special, I could use a part number to assist me at the Stealership. I know, I could by it from Rusty but why should I? Last time I knew he was searching for an elusive gasoline leak. Hay fella, this is a diesel list! Here's a pack of matches, now go search for the leaking gasoline! Speaking of Rusty, I think NOW would be a good time for him to have a sale on floor mats. Our significant others could buy them for Christmas gifts. Changed to DELVAC1 over to MOBIL T/S yesterday. I am amazed at the oil mileage this car gets, about 6,000/qt. Cool weather is here, I'm seeing a little more smoke after start-up than I remember. It starts very well after 1 glow cycle. I suspect the problem is rooted in memory failure rather than anything wrong with the car. Air leak noise due to inop sunroof is very bad at 80mph. I have to wait for $pring to have the $800 repair done. I'm afraid to use tape to seal is as tapes removal will probably damage paint when removed. If I could find some wax Rope that is ¼ in diameter, I'd be all set. Last weekend my Masonic Lodge assisted in relocation of some refuges from storm ravaged Mississippi. Warm and fuzzy feeling, being able to help. Hope all of our list members are thankful for all their blessings on the Holiday. -- Peter T. Good Stuff: Car uses 1qt of Delvac1 in 5,000 miles. I use M/B coolant and M1 ATF. I have oil analysis to show that engine is sound. Car has recent front brakes, rotors and calipers w/hoses. Car has 16 late style wheels, 2 good Nyokia S snow and front Bridgestones that are serviceable but nothing to brag about. In the past 2 years (50Kmi) I have done the following: New Radiator, water pump, vacuumed pump, shut-off valve, new lifters, glow plugs. P/S pump. New M/B exhaust system last year. Interior is decent, needs new mats and TLC Modern radio {Jap} with CD player. This car is my daily driver and long trip specialist. It runs 100%. Proof? [MBZ] O/T My Tool Box
I also subscribe to a Metropolitan list where we bemoan Lucas electrical problems and such. This post was made recently with the hopes of improving our shop skills. How many of these tools are you proficient with? Tools and Their Uses. DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, splattering it against that freshly painted airplane part you were drying. WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprint whorls and hard-earned guitar calluses in about the time it takes you to say, Ouch ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning pop rivets in their holes until you die of old age. PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, a nd the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes. VISE-GRIPS: Used to round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand. OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub you want the bearing race out of. WHITWORTH SOCKETS: Once used for working on older British cars and motorcycles, they are now used mainly for impersonating that 9/16 or 1/2 socket you've been searching for the last 15 minutes. HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new disk brake pads, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper. EIGHT-FOOT LONG DOUGLAS FIR 2X4: Used for levering an automobile upward off a hydraulic jack handle. TWEEZERS: A tool for removing wood splinters. PHONE: Tool for calling your neighbour to see if he has another hydraulic floor jack. SNAP-ON GASKET SCRAPER: Theoretically useful as a sandwich tool for spreading mayonnaise; used mainly for getting dog off your boot. E-Z OUT BOLT AND STUD EXTRACTOR: A tool ten times harder than any known drill bit that snaps off in bolt holes you couldn't use anyway. TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the tensile strength on everything you forgot to disconnect. CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 16-INCH SCREWDRIVER: A large prybar that inexplicably has an accurately machined screwdriver tip on the end opposite the handle. AVIATION METAL SNIPS: See hacksaw. TROUBLE LIGHT: The home mechanic's own tanning booth. Sometimes called a drop light, it is a good source of vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, which is not otherwise found under cars at night. Health benefits aside, it's main purpose is to consume 40-watt light bulbs at about the same rate that 105-mm howitzer shells might be used during, say, the first few hours of the Battle of the Bulge. More often dark than light, its name is somewhat misleading. PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the lids of old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splash oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads. AIR COMPRESSOR: A machine that takes energy produced in a coal-burning power plant 200 miles away and transforms it into compressed air that travels by hose to a Chicago Pneumatic impact wrench that grips rusty bolts last over tightened 58 years ago by someone at ERCO, and neatly rounds off their heads. PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50¢ part. HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to cut hoses too short. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts not far from the object we are trying to hit. MECHANIC'S KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. EXPLETIVE: A balm, usually applied verbally in hindsight, which somehow eases those pains and indignities following our every deficiency in foresight. -- Peter T. I bled it the old fashioned way. I was rewarded with what feel and at as wonderful brakes. [MBZ] Acetone in Fuel
Subject: [MBZ] 33 1/3 increase in Diesel fuel mileage...Huh? To: MB List [EMAIL PROTECTED] For the chemically inclined among us: If one were to add 1.5 oz of ordinary store-bought Acetone to every 10 gallons of diesel fuel, would the acetone in that concentration cause any damage to seals, gaskets, injector pumps etc? I ask this for I was listening to a Nationally syndicated late night talk show last week, and the guest said he had great success in his gasser using 2.5 oz of acetone per 10 gallons and achieving a 1/3 increase in fuel mileage. He also commented that this increase was possible only if he used premium gasoline and the gasoline did not have an alcohol additive. But what caught my ear was the guest's comments about improved diesel fuel mileage. __SNIP__ How to reply This fellow's employment history includes: 1) Sold Spark Intensifiers at the Annual Podunk Fair. 2) Nigerian national with secret bank account numbers. 3) Wrote news releases for 60 Minutes. 4) Does Horsepower calculations for KN Filters. 5) Sold Genuine Rolex watches on a street corner in New York. [MBZ] This is great, the newest governmental element
Scientists Discover New Element A major research institution has just announced the discovery of the heaviest element yet known to science. The new element has been named Governmentium. Governmentium has one neutron, 12 assistant neutrons,75 deputy neutrons, and 224 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 311. The 311 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, as it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A minute amount of Governmentium causes a reaction to take over 4 days to complete, when it would normally take less than a second. Governmentium has a normal half-life of 4 years; it does not decay, but, instead undergoes a re-organization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact Governmentium mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This characteristic of the moron promotion leads scientists to believe Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as Critical Morass. When catalyzed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium, an element which radiates just as much energy, since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

[MBZ] Bad Idle Fixed now a paint question
You may remember that I had a problem a few weeks ago with bad idle on my 300SDL. We were suspecting a bad injection pump. My normal Indy asked me to take to another fellow who was M/B trained on older diesels. He said pump was good, lifters were bad ;-( Frustrated, I bought new lifters (Thanx Rusty) and EGR valve which he had also condemned. Got the car back today, it is about 90% better. I am very happy. Indy wants me to use some Red Line fuel treatment for a while, he insists that I am carboned up. Next subject. I am going to repaint a bad rear quarter this weekend. It won't be beautiful buy any thing will improve the peeling mess the PO had done. On my truck (PSD) I use 15-40 Dino oil and change it at 5,000. My rational is that it has no cold starting difficulty such as our older Benz's have. It is also a major PIA to change for me, I am unable to cope well with the spin-on filter (2 Qt's). The only way I have been able to consistently remove it with out dropping {I makes a mess!} is to punch a hole and drain it first. __SNIP___ It was also asked: Is there a procedure written down somewhere for renewing the ATF in the power steering system? Per Marshall's suggestion, I would rule out everything else first, but if you do decide to do this, you'll want to torque the fittings using the specs in the TDM rather than the fsm; just ask for this if you decide to go ahead. Have you tried cracking the injection lines one by one with the engine idling in an attempt to isolate the problem to one or more cylinders? [MBZ] 300SDL ELR
I need to trouble shoot this. Per Dave M. I need to apply 12V (The Wiring seems fine} and see if that increases my idle speed. Well excuse me for being electrically challenged, which of the two terminals on the ELR should I jump 12V to? I assume one is ground and one needs the voltage. My POS manual (on CD) is no help. [MBZ] 603.XXX Rough Idle
My car seems to be idling too slow (about 600rpm) and is rough. It runs fine off idle. Fuel Mileage is good. I've changed the Over Voltage Relay as suggested. The idle controller in engine compartment seems to have no effect. Would the engine idle poorly and run smooth with a bad injector? How do you trouble shoot injectors? Weekend regards, -- Peter T. [MBZ] W126 Front Brakes
Tuff day again here. The goal was to do front brakes, calipers, rotors and hoses. Along with new Bilstiens. Handicap: Never did it before on M/B, I can find almost no info on CD POS manual. I almost finished. I made pressure bleeder, gave a nice spray effect from the 2 rubber plugs on M/C. Are brakes split front/back or diagonally? Nice loaded Calipers from Rusty. Local Stealer had no front seals or Green Grease, their service dept doesn't use it ??? I'd like to meet the genus who designed bolting the hubs to the Rotors, NOT! New hose had a different type fitting for the top, no leaks so I'm happy. Remember, Church Tomorrow! -- Peter T. [MBZ] O/T My Music System
One of the dieselers {Kalib?} asked what folks were donig for music. I do not have a golden ear, AM would be of for me! I bought a Clarion AM/FM/CD/MP3 player for about $100 from a reburb seller in New Jersey. I downloaded News Rover ( http://www.NewsRover.com/getup.htm ) it is free for 30 days, $29 to register. This is wonderful, allows me to search by artist, name, file type, etc. I can burn about 5 hours of music onto a $.25 CD. Works great for me! -- Peter T. [MBZ] Wheel bearing Grease
Is there consensus that any name brand synthetic wheel bearing grease is acceptable for our cars? Seeing as I have to pull the hubs {I'd like to speak to that design engineer!} to swap rotors, I may as well do bearing service. -- Peter T. [MBZ] HELP 300SDL ROTOR REMOVAL
Please cross post to [EMAIL PROTECTED] As I only get the digest. Doing brakes on my car. I cannot find a section in the damn CD manual. I've got caliper off. Do I have to remoce the hub to remove the rotor? Oh S%t, I have no new seals. Please confirm or repute. Regards -- Peter T. [MBZ] Pressure Bleeding.
Found most of the parts to make a pressure bleeder, I've got $20 into it. Trouble finding a master Cylinder cap, guess I'll try a dealer tomorrow. If I understand correctly, I will simply pressurize The reservoir with about 20 PSI, I have no gage. Than bleed furthest to the closest. I have 2 pints of #4 brake fluid coming. I'll use a can of #3 to flush the parts while cleaning. I'm also changing shocks. Car is jacked up with front wheels off. I have to put another jack/support to hold the lower A frame while removing shock as the shock acts as a stop for suspension travel. Is this correct? Going to be a fun weekend Moose stuff, I missed a huge cow moose with my truck/camper a few years ago. She ran in front of me, I flat spotted 8 tires! [MBZ] 300SDL Brakes
Done lots of brakes in my time. All I've done on this car is swap pads and flush system using my Mity-vac. I've ordered parts to o'haul calipers, change hoses, rotors and pads and sensors. I do not own a pressure bleeder, hope it's ok to use Mity-vac. Any special info I need? BTW: My ragged idle was not repaired by changing the Over Voltage Relay Got to do brakes now, pedal is low. -- Peter T. [MBZ] 5 Cylinder 300SDL?
Bad enough I have no A/C while I wait for mono-valve, I drive with Mexican 2/60 A/C now. Coming home she started to idle on 5 cylinders, or so it feels. Idle is also low at about 550 turns. I checked under the bonnet, no spark plug wires off !! Good power, I assume bad injector at idle? Looks like I call that Rusty fellow and ask him for some diesel purge, I can supply my own Coke bottle. Never used it before, just rig up a line to suck from can and return to Coke bottle? [MBZ] F-Soot Question
Good Morning all, I am forced to read digests about 3 times a week, sorry if this is not timely. I have a question with regards to DELVAC1 and it's f-soot capability. I was of the opinion that Mobile gave the upper range of this as 4%. Based on that, and many oil analysis of my car's particular driving regiment(s), I have found that 20Kmi is the point where I archive 3%. I change it that. I've been following this for about 100KMI with no ill effects, I hope! I think Dr. Booth said in a post last week that M/B states that the design limit for our engine is 2%. Am I correct? Would this supercede MOBIL's position? I would think that DELVAC1 would meet all of M/B's requirement up until the f-soot level is exceeded. -- Peter T.
