If I step away from Harbor Freight and get better quality gauges and vacuum,

vacuum, I have an 80 gallon Champion compressor - are air -assisted Venturi
pump vacs worthwhile or should I go electric? I won't say money is no object

If it leaks down in a month, likely there will be enough dye at the leak to see.

Since you are going to open it to fix the leak, I would suggest a new
receiver/dryer or accumulator (depending on the style of AC, I don't know which
one Chrysler used), fresh oil in the compressor, and replacing all the 0-rings.
If one is bad, the rest aren't far behind!

Check the condensate drain for traces of dye, it's possible you have a cracked
evaporator. I don't know if this is a common problem on a PT Cruiser, but they
DO fail. Ditto for the condenser -- they are subject to corrosion and road
damage, being the most vulnerable part of the system and under the most heat
and pressure stress.

Probably a good idea to clean out the space between rad and condenser, likely
it's full of trash.

Check the hoses for leaks at the compression fittings, too, especially the high
pressure and hot ones. Check the fittings on the compressor as they can leak,
notably the high pressure side as the o-rings erode there. Ditto for
compressor front seal, although that one may be hard to find. Best to use a
thermal conductivity or combustion type leak detector there if you have access
to one, as the dye will be present only under the clutch and likely not very
visible.

Good luck -- I've been hunting for a leak that size on my 300TE for about six
years now.

Go with an electric pump! Vacumepumps driven by air are; 1) Slow, 2)
inefficient 3) very noisy.

Don't forget the April 2007 Machinist's Workshop magazine comparison test.

They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the
control being the torque required to remove the nut from a scientifically
rusted environment.

Penetrating oil . Average load
None .. 516 pounds

WD-40 238 pounds

PB Blaster .. 214 pounds

Liquid Wrench 127 pounds

Kano Kroil ... 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone mix...53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a home brew mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission
fluid and acetone.

Note the home brew was better than any commercial product in this one
particular test.

Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with
equally good results.

Note also that Liquid Wrench is about as good as Kroil for about 20% of
the price.

Re: [MBZ] OT: programmable thermostats

2009-02-05 Thread Peter Arnold
I would relly like to find a thermostat that I could program on the
P.C., upload with a USP cable. I find the programing on mine to be
cumbersome.

BTW: I have a heat pump. Given the price of oil NOW, I've been told
that the Pivot Point is 35 degrees.

Where does one get a good thermostat?

http://www.alpinehomeair.com/viewproduct.cfm?productID=453055819
http://www.alpinehomeair.com/related/Honeywel%20VisionPro%208000%20Install%20Instructions.pdf

Check out the install instructions. You can tell the PID controller how
aggressive its gains need to be, you can set the cycles per hour (not
perfectly enforce I'm sure, but will give you better control of how
short the run-time is), and it has the adaptive intelligent recovery
which learns your house's heat/cool times. It also has seven day
programs... you can have unique sleep, wake, away, return
temperatures/times for every day. The thermostat is removable so you
can program it in your lap, and then stick it back on the wall. The
thermostat will also run off the furnace's 24VAC (batteries as well).
Also, the thermostat will guarantee that the compressor has five minutes
of off time between cycles to prevent damage to the compressor (say
there is a power outage or something).

Total overkill, but I'm a gadget freak...

I have a dual fuel setup... heat pump and 93% gas furnace. Totally
overkill for my mild climate, but there is a long and complicated story
behind it. Would just do a heat pump next time around. Anyway, I
installed the outdoor temp sensor for the thermostat, and it uses the
heat pump down to 40F, and the gas furnace after that. I can change
that temperature to whatever I want (could do it based on gas vs.
electric costs)

The thermostat may not be worth the $200 price tag in my area, but as
cold as it gets up there you might recover it in fairly short order.
Maybe there are some of these hidden settings in your thermostat? All
of those settings I talked about are in the hidden install menu.

Holiday Exercise Program

I tried it, I liked it, you will too!

The older we get the more important it is to incorporate exercise into
our
daily routine. This is necessary to maintain cardiovascular health and
maintain muscle mass.

If you're over 40, you might t want to take it easy at first, then do
more
repetitions as you become more proficient and build stamina. Warning:
It may
be too strenuous for some.

Always consult your doctor before starting any exercise program!

SCROLL DOWN.

NOW SCROLL BACK UP.

That's enough for the first day.

To rid myself of crud, I Blow-Down the furnace every year or so.
Makes a mess and you are dealing with VERY HOT WATER OR STEAM.

I have furnace up to temp. Un seat the safety valve for 1 or 2
seconds, that blow the crud out of the top of the boiler. Than, I
open bottom pet cock for a slightly longer time, to dump bottom living
crap.
This was monthly ritual of small to medium size steam systems, I do it
on my home hot water boilers as it seems to make sense.
If I find the safety valve weeping, system at design pressure, I
change the bladder, always fixes if for me.

My 1st boiler went when my house was 8 years old! P.O.S. the builder
put in. I was out of work, change it my self in one working day. I
was motivated by the fact is was 5° outside!

I was also a little younger...

I thought from Peters first post on the subject, that he was
attributing the black crud to a failed expansion tank - but guess
 that's not the case.
So, where is the black crud coming from? It can't be doing any good
for the rest of the system either.

That is up in the air right now. The manual says premium, the fuel cap/door
say premium. But, I have asked a few others that have this car and some of
them say it needs premium and others say it is a waste of money. I have not
noticed any difference in mileage or performance when using 87 octane. I was
concerned that it might ping but it has not. I don't know what to think,
so I have been putting in 91 (premium) about every other tank.

I talked to one of the techs at the dealership I worked at and he said that
if the octane is too low and it starts to ping, the knock sensor will catch
it and it will retard the timing slightly to compensate for it. So, it is
possible that I might have less power with 87 than with 91. I don't really
know what to think. In the past (especially in my 90 300SEL), I thought I
could tell a difference when I put in 87 rather than 91. Maybe I was just
imagining it.

You see, I used it to tow my 3,500# camper all over the place. When
Towing I NEVER got it into 5th. Spend lots of time in 3rd at 50 mph.
I seem to remember that buzzed it to about 4,000rpm.
A very stout rugged vehicle that one.
I did use Mobile1, I'd been told that in such severe duty the ring
lands would run hot enough to break down dino oil.
It also road very rough. Once while traversing a parking lot with 6

Trooper came off the ground! My back hurt for a week. No damage

It's ok to inflate any tire to it's max, or what is required on the

It does no harm if the pressure creeps up 10% or so when the tyre gets

Check with your tire dealers!

[MBZ] O/O SCAMED BY AUTOPARTSGIANT almost

My saga came to a peaceful end, 3 days after I notified PayPal that I
had not received good that I'd paid $118 for.

Slime balls at AUTOPARTSGIANT disclosed to PayPAl (NOT ME) that the
parts were out of stock, and hadn't been shipped. Remember that
AUTPFARTSGIANT had sent me an e-mail sating the parts had been
shipped, no confirmation number available per Randy

$118 was credited to my Visa account. PayPAl notified me that the
case was closed.

Of course what I should have gotten was triple damages for the loss of
use of my truck, I'd happily send it to the Shriners Hospital.

A) Line goes dead
B) Promise to Get back to me with a tracking Number.
C) Forward me to a Supervisor who is in fact another

4) The web site has funky Certification which my anti virus
strongly suggests that I do not defeat. Having no trust in this
company, I think that advice is good.

I cannot find an Agent of Service to serve them with a small claim
action, they are stone wall and I have greater issues to be concerned
about.

I would ask Pay Pal to reconsider their association with this

Myself, I've never bothered and change it about every 6,000 miles if I'm
using M1, or 3,000 miles if I'm using conventional (e.g. Delo).

Huh?
2 Nitrogen tanks $1000
Regulator $50.
Hose and tire chuck $30.
Plus whatever it costs to have the local compressed gas dealer swap out the
empty tank for a full one.

Am I missing something essential?

If any of those are taken away, my life is reduced somewhat. When we

You up to 14d+5d+13d=32 days - of paid time per year that doesn;t produce

Avg work year is 2080 hours - above 32 days represent 256 hrs or a 12.3%

Then there's taxes - Workmans Comp, Social Security - Unemployment Comp and
Medicare equal 38% of your salary/hourly rate.
so we're up to 50% already. (Depending on the work force (my company had a
lot of employees with long service and were getting 4-6 weeks of Vac and 2-3
weeks of sick leave yearl which is why we added another 50% for
contingencies.)

So there's roughly 50% of the benefits you receive - if you only get 5%
perhaps you're a contract employee who isn;t given vacation time, sick time
or paid holidays you're more highly compensated in lieu of benefits? In
any case the employer pays the taxes above unless you're a private

Just think - if your employer wasn't paying 38% taxes to the govt for you
that would be money he could pay you!

[MBZ] Paint Question

I figure to own my car 3 more years, it will be spent by than or I

It really needs paint, lived in the south most of it's life and is

A few years ago I would have squirted it my self in the yard. After
wet sanding and clear coat it would have been fine as a daily driver.

Due to health, that is no longer an option.

I need some objective feedback on MACO. Being a franchise operation,
I'm hoping their guarantee is worth something in case of gross
failure.

Any experience out there?

[MBZ] Miscellaneous Rambling from an old Turkey.

2005-11-22 Thread Peter Arnold
Miscellaneous Rambling from an old Turkey.

Maybe one of you wise fellows can tell me what size/type screw is used
to retain the outer door handle on a 300SDL. I'm suspecting some
thing like a 6mm socket set screw. If it's very special, I could use
a part number to assist me at the Stealership.

I know, I could by it from Rusty but why should I? Last time I knew
he was searching for an elusive gasoline leak. Hay fella, this is a
diesel list! Here's a pack of matches, now go search for the leaking
gasoline!

Speaking of Rusty, I think NOW would be a good time for him to have a
sale on floor mats. Our significant others could buy them for
Christmas gifts.

Changed to DELVAC1 over to MOBIL T/S yesterday. I am amazed at the
oil mileage this car gets, about 6,000/qt.

Cool weather is here, I'm seeing a little more smoke after start-up
than I remember. It starts very well after 1 glow cycle. I suspect
the problem is rooted in memory failure rather than anything wrong
with the car.

Air leak noise due to inop sunroof is very bad at 80mph. I have to
wait for $pring to have the $800 repair done. I'm afraid to use tape
to seal is as tapes removal will probably damage paint when removed.
If I could find some wax Rope that is ¼ in diameter, I'd be all set.

Last weekend my Masonic Lodge assisted in relocation of some refuges
from storm ravaged Mississippi. Warm and fuzzy feeling, being able to
help. Hope all of our list members are thankful for all their
blessings on the Holiday.

[MBZ] My 300SDL is 4 Sale

2005-11-13 Thread Peter Arnold
My job requires me to have 4WD ;-(

Bad Stuff:
This car needs paint, it has no rust. Minor damage on RR
quarter was painted poorly by PO. This was a Southern car, all the
paint is in poor shape.
Sunroof is inop, requires 425 parts and $400 labor repair
Car is ready for rear brakes. I'd change rotors Calipers if
I was doing it.
Dash has 2 cracks which proves it's heritage.

Good Stuff:
Car uses 1qt of Delvac1 in 5,000 miles.
I use M/B coolant and M1 ATF.
I have oil analysis to show that engine is sound.
Car has recent front brakes, rotors and calipers w/hoses.

[MBZ] Powder Coat Wheels

2005-11-10 Thread Peter Arnold
I had 4 very crappy looking wheels, they had been chrome plated by
P.O.. They peeled and were ugly. I replaced them.

Gave to old ones to a fellow at work. He abrasive blasted off the
chrome, than polished them a bit. He painted them with Eastwoods
powder coating kit, requires baking at about 400°.

They look better than my new wheels!

[MBZ] O/T My Tool Box

2005-11-02 Thread Peter Arnold
I also subscribe to a Metropolitan list where we bemoan Lucas
electrical problems and such. This post was made recently with the
hopes of improving our shop skills.

How many of these tools are you proficient with?

Tools and Their Uses.

DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat
metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest
and flings your beer across the room, splattering it against that
freshly painted airplane part you were drying.

WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere
under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprint
whorls and hard-earned guitar calluses in about the time it takes you
to say, Ouch

ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning pop rivets in their
holes until you die of old age.

PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads.

HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board
principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable
motion, a nd the more you attempt to influence its course, the more
dismal your future becomes.

VISE-GRIPS: Used to round off bolt heads. If nothing else is
available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to
the palm of your hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various
flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the
grease inside the wheel hub you want the bearing race out of.

WHITWORTH SOCKETS: Once used for working on older British cars and
motorcycles, they are now used mainly for impersonating that 9/16 or
1/2 socket you've been searching for the last 15 minutes.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground
after you have installed your new disk brake pads, trapping the jack
handle firmly under the bumper.

EIGHT-FOOT LONG DOUGLAS FIR 2X4: Used for levering an automobile
upward off a hydraulic jack handle.

TWEEZERS: A tool for removing wood splinters.

PHONE: Tool for calling your neighbour to see if he has another
hydraulic floor jack.

SNAP-ON GASKET SCRAPER: Theoretically useful as a sandwich tool for
spreading mayonnaise; used mainly for getting dog off your boot.
E-Z OUT BOLT AND STUD EXTRACTOR: A tool ten times harder than any
known drill bit that snaps off in bolt holes you couldn't use anyway.

TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the tensile strength on
everything you forgot to disconnect.

CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 16-INCH SCREWDRIVER: A large prybar that inexplicably
has an accurately machined screwdriver tip on the end opposite the
handle.

AVIATION METAL SNIPS: See hacksaw.

TROUBLE LIGHT: The home mechanic's own tanning booth. Sometimes called
a drop light, it is a good source of vitamin D, the sunshine
vitamin, which is not otherwise found under cars at night. Health
benefits aside, it's main purpose is to consume 40-watt light bulbs at
about the same rate that 105-mm howitzer shells might be used during,
say, the first few hours of the Battle of the Bulge. More often dark
than light, its name is somewhat misleading.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the lids of old-style
paper-and-tin oil cans and splash oil on your shirt; but can also be
used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.

AIR COMPRESSOR: A machine that takes energy produced in a coal-burning
power plant 200 miles away and transforms it into compressed air that
travels by hose to a Chicago Pneumatic impact wrench that grips rusty
bolts last over tightened 58 years ago by someone at ERCO, and neatly
rounds off their heads.

PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or
bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50¢ part.

HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to cut hoses too short.

HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is
used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts not
far from the object we are trying to hit.

MECHANIC'S KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of
cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly
well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic
bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic
parts.

EXPLETIVE: A balm, usually applied verbally in hindsight, which
somehow eases those pains and indignities following our every
deficiency in foresight.

[MBZ] Insurence Trash Attitude

2005-11-02 Thread Peter Arnold
From: Jon Kanas [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Although State Farm carries a policy on the SUV involved, the 16yr old
was not a named insured, so State Farm has not decided if they want
to
accept liability for the damage to the Mercedes. I am considering
having our family attorney initiate proceedings directly against the
at-fault party to see if that can get State Farm off dead center
rather
than turn this over to Farmers (my insurance) for subrogation. I am
hesitant to process the claim through my insurance, as two expensive
mishaps, regardless of fault, cannot bode well for my future insurance
rates or renewals

Any suggestions for how to approach this situation will be gratefully
received and considered.

_SNIP___

I had a very similar instance a few years ago. A nice little old lady
smacked my car in a parking lot. Her insurance company (NationWide)
chose to ignore my claim; they wanted me to use my insurance.
I choose to bring an action against the little old lady who owned the
car. That got NationWide's attention, They were irate that I would
bother their client. they settled very quickly.
Remember, the insurance company did you no harm. Bring action against
the driver/owner, they will put pressure on their insurance company.

A bit expensive on the lift angles (you are paying list price -- check

And yes, the lift angles break readily, more so if no one has

Been suffering with this for awhile. Thanks to all the have tried to
help.

My Indy gave me definitive bad news today. It seems that the
mechanism that tilts the roof is FUBAR. Something he call a
Triangle is broken on one side.
M/B has redesigned (Per Indy and Rusty}, the Triangles have to be
replaced as a set with new improved design. Cost is about $450 for
parts and 3 or 4 hours labor.

Indy was kind, he got the roof closed tight and suggested that I wait
for spring, which I will.

Background:
A few months ago I did all parts on my front brakes.
When I bled it, I couldn't get my pressure bleeder to play nice. It
kept blowing fluid out the 2 rubber caps on the M/C.
I bled it the old fashioned way. I was rewarded with what feel and at
as wonderful brakes.

Today I noticed that the rear brakes don't seem to be working as
witnessed by rust rotors as seen thru the wheels.

What am I doing wrong with the pressure bleeder? How does one seal
those rubber caps on the M/C?

BTW, car goes the Indy for sun roof repair on Tuesday. Keep me in

[MBZ] Acetone in Fuel

Subject: [MBZ] 33 1/3 increase in Diesel fuel mileage...Huh?
To: MB List [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For the chemically inclined among us: If one were to add 1.5 oz of
ordinary
store-bought Acetone to every 10 gallons of diesel fuel, would the
acetone
in that concentration cause any damage to seals, gaskets, injector
pumps
etc?

I ask this for I was listening to a Nationally syndicated late night
talk
show last week, and the guest said he had great success in his gasser
using
2.5 oz of acetone per 10 gallons and achieving a 1/3 increase in fuel
mileage. He also commented that this increase was possible only if he
used
premium gasoline and the gasoline did not have an alcohol additive.

But what caught my ear was the guest's comments about improved diesel
fuel
mileage.

[MBZ] This is great, the newest governmental element

2005-09-25 Thread Peter Arnold

Scientists Discover New Element

A major research institution has just announced the discovery of
the heaviest element yet known to science. The new element has been
named Governmentium.
Governmentium has one neutron, 12 assistant neutrons,75 deputy
neutrons, and 224 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic
mass of 311.

The 311 particles are held together by forces called morons,
which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles
called peons.
Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be
detected, as it impedes every reaction with which it comes into
contact.
A minute amount of Governmentium causes a reaction to take over 4
days to complete, when it would normally take less than a second.

Governmentium has a normal half-life of 4 years; it does not
decay, but, instead undergoes a re-organization in which a portion of
the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.

In fact Governmentium mass will actually increase over time,
since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons,
forming isodopes.
This characteristic of the moron promotion leads scientists to believe
Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in
concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as Critical
Morass. When catalyzed with money, Governmentium becomes
Administratium, an element which radiates just as much energy, since
it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

[MBZ] Bad Idle Fixed now a paint question

2005-09-08 Thread Peter Arnold
You may remember that I had a problem a few weeks ago with bad idle on
my 300SDL. We were suspecting a bad injection pump.
My normal Indy asked me to take to another fellow who was M/B trained
on older diesels. He said pump was good, lifters were bad ;-(
Frustrated, I bought new lifters (Thanx Rusty) and EGR valve which he
had also condemned.
Got the car back today, it is about 90% better. I am very happy. Indy
wants me to use some Red Line fuel treatment for a while, he insists
that I am carboned up.

Next subject.
I am going to repaint a bad rear quarter this weekend. It won't be
beautiful buy any thing will improve the peeling mess the PO had done.
I'm planning on using my DA to remove bad paint, prime and repaint
with an acrylic enamel (the most forgiving paint I have used as an
amateur)
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

IMO, the best way to deal with carbon is to find a nice big hill and
climb it hard and fast until you can't make a black cloud of exhaust
any more. A quart of motor oil in a tank of fuel might help a little.
Or you could just drive it like you stole it if traffic conditions
allow.

___SNIP__

Yes, it's the same car. The chances of my Bride allowing me to get
another are slim and none while this one is in the family. BTW, The
Indy also replaced one injector.

I do drive this car as hard as I can, being prudent as I am old and
want to get older. When I first got it (166Kmi) it would billow black
smoke to celebrate 3,500rpm at WOT. It hasn't done that for a long
time, leads me to believe it is pretty clean.

I'm going to try the Red Line as they sponsor my other vice, Fuel
Drag Racing.

Rusty, sorry to hear of your families grief. Take some time and smell
the roses, life is too short to worry about Are the ribs done yet!

I strongly support the idea of a Lobsta-Que to be held in New
England.

Brakes: I strongly recommend putting Loaded Calipers, Rotors and
new Flex hoses on these older cars. I purchased mine from an old
fellow down south and my car rewards me with wonderful braking and
feel.

Guns: I have Great GrandPa's 44cal. Remington CapBall, Sword,
Holster, Belt and Cartridge Case that he used on a trip to Atlanta
about 140 years ago.

Emergency Preparedness: Take a ride thru Vermont/New Hampshire/Maine.
As you drive up and down the hills note that there is a little town in
every valley.
Now 200 years ago, those towns were completely isolated from each
other for 2 or 3 months during the winter. If you didn't chop enough
wood, store enough food, prepare your shelter etc. YOU DIED! There is
a lesson to be learned there.
That being said, my heart goes out to those who are suffering due to
ignorance, be it there own or their elected officials. Marshal Law
should be declared and it should be strictly enforced for the welfare
of all concerned. __Rant Off.

[MBZ] Oil Thread

Subject: [MBZ] Crazy to go 20K on any oil

So, is the point of going 15-20,000 miles just so you can say you did
that?

_SNIP_

Following your reasoning: What's the sense of going 500 miles on a
tank of fuel? Just to say you did it. Follow this rational and you
should be discarding one half of your Fuel.

In my 300SDL, I regularly go 20,000Kmi on Delvac1 as it has proven by
analysis to be meeting all of the requirements of new oil. My drain
oil quality is probably better that new Dino oil.

On my truck (PSD) I use 15-40 Dino oil and change it at 5,000. My
rational is that it has no cold starting difficulty such as our older
Benz's have. It is also a major PIA to change for me, I am unable to
cope well with the spin-on filter (2 Qt's). The only way I have been
able to consistently remove it with out dropping {I makes a mess!} is
to punch a hole and drain it first.

__SNIP___
It was also asked:

Is there a procedure written down somewhere for renewing the ATF in
the power steering system? I'd like to use the Mobil 1 stuff but of
course would need to take the old stuff out first.

(No, I've not checked the maintenance CDs today but think I did look
for this earlier and couldn't find anything.)

To which I reply:

Twice a year, I use a suction device to remove the fluid in both the
P/S reservoir and the Brake Reservoir on all my cars. I refill with
appropriate stuff. I change the Benz P/S filter once a year.

Since starting that regiment about 25 years ago, I have noticed a vast
reduction in component failures in those systems. I use DOT4 in the
Benz, which is one of the car's PIA idiosycrcies.

Thanks for the reply.
To Refresh: Bad Idle, too slow, unable to adjust with the
potentiometer, unplugging the ELR had no effect.

Bad news came when I tried to adjust the idle speed with the {normally
sealed} idle adjustment screw on the pump. Turning it one rev either
direction had no effect.
You opined that the pump was BROKEN

I tried a seldom-used cure using liberal amounts of Maker's Mark
that evening. No help. The Minister was right, it cured nothing!

I forgotten lister suggested Yankee Diesel as a pump expert in my
area; he's about 70 miles away. True to the nature of good Indy's
there was no phone answer for about 4 days.

My normally very good Indy {Honest enough to admit to not working on
Diesel Fuel systems} asked me to take it to another local fellow who
retired from M/B dealership.
New fellow is thinking it may be a sensor, he is jammed with work, I
left the car with him.
Yankee Diesel just returned call, back from vacation. Nice fellow,
after hearing the long form of the story, he is very sure the pump
needs repair/o'haul at about $700. This is in alignment with prices
quoted by my normal source who is still trying to pay off his Civil
War debt ;-)

I am unable/unwilling to do this RR.

If the fellow who now has the car condemns the pump I will have him
swap a rebuilt/used pump. I have been SOL looking for used pump
around here.
Any leads on a good used pump would be appreciated.

Not to dispute anything Marshall has said, but I did replace the seals
O-rings on the albatross's pump when a couple of them started
leaking after it'd been sitting idle for 6-8 weeks. Replacement did
cure that problem. Per Marshall's suggestion, I would rule out
everything else first, but if you do decide to do this, you'll want to
torque the fittings using the specs in the TDM rather than the fsm;
just ask for this if you decide to go ahead. Have you tried cracking
the injection lines one by one with the engine idling in an attempt to
isolate the problem to one or more cylinders? Don't remember if
you've definitively ruled out a balky injector.

Dave.
Came on suddenly, same time my Mono Valve went about a month ago. I
believe too slow idle and maybe a bad motor mount cause the roughness.
I'd like to solve the idle problem first. Idle is about 550rpm.
I cannot improve it , using the idle screw, which I've turned about
360 degrees in both directions with no effect. Per Marshall's
suggestion, I will try more radical adjustment ASAP.
Unplugging the ELR causes the engine to stall immediately.

[MBZ] Idle talk continues + some O/T Stuff

2005-08-04 Thread Peter Arnold
Thank-you for all for the feedback concerning my idling problem. This
is a compilation:

With the actuator unplugged the idle speed of a warm engine should be
570 rpm - set with screw above the idle actuator. When the actuator
is
plugged back in the idle speed should raise and settle at ~ 620
(adjust
using the resistor plug setting it at whatever position produces 620
rpm.

The engine speed sensor (L3) provide the electronic diesel control
computer with the speed signal and the computer adjusts the signal to
the actuator to provide an appropriate idle speed taking into
consideration engine temperature and the selected resistor trimmer
position.

I think I have to ASSUME that the Speed Sensor is functional as the
idle actuator is trying to adjust the speed. When I got home this
evening, I tried to adjust the unassisted idle speed per Marshall's
instructions.
Pull plug on actuator, engine stalls.
Hmm, I see adjustment screw, it has a 13mm jamn nut which has been
sealed to test my veracity. Break the damn seal, full speed ahead.
Turn CCW, no improvement
Turn back and 1 turn CW, no improvement.
Seal it back up, time for Sam Adams!

Because of the strange methods my employer uses {he reads all outbound

I flat spotted tyres on my truck and #12,000 5th wheel while very
narrowly missing a Cow Moose in New Hampshire 3 years ago. Very
Scary! She ran across my beam, going way out of her way to get there.
She had gross scaring on her left rear flank indicating the she had
done this before.

On balancing/adjusting various configurations of side draft carbs.
Why bother, they will loose adjustment in a few miles anyways.
Kind of like tuning a set of bag pipes, can't be appreciated

I guess I'd let my wife do it after the glass cleaning!

I have 2 pints of #4 brake fluid coming. I'll use a can of #3 to
flush the parts while cleaning.

I'm also changing shocks. Car is jacked up with front wheels off. I
have to put another jack/support to hold the lower A frame while

this correct?

2005-06-30 Thread Peter Arnold
Bad enough I have no A/C while I wait for mono-valve, I drive with
Mexican 2/60 A/C now.

Coming home she started to idle on 5 cylinders, or so it feels. Idle
is also low at about 550 turns. I checked under the bonnet, no spark
plug wires off !!

Good power, I assume bad injector at idle? Looks like I call that
Rusty fellow and ask him for some diesel purge, I can supply my own
Coke bottle.

Never used it before, just rig up a line to suck from can and return
to Coke bottle?

Tomorrow night we leave for a week on the Maryland shore, going to
kill us some crabs!

[MBZ] W-126 A/C grief

2005-06-29 Thread Peter Arnold
NOt a good day for us today, My car defaulted to Full Heat mode on
the way home from work. I assume this is the infamous mono-valve??

Where is it?

I leave on vacation Friday, will have to take alternate vehicle.

[MBZ] F-Soot Question

2005-06-25 Thread Peter Arnold
Good Morning all,

I am forced to read digests about 3 times a week, sorry if this is not
timely.

I have a question with regards to DELVAC1 and it's f-soot capability.

I was of the opinion that Mobile gave the upper range of this as 4%.
Based on that, and many oil analysis of my car's particular driving
regiment(s), I have found that 20Kmi is the point where I archive 3%.
I change it that. I've been following this for about 100KMI with no
ill effects, I hope!

I think Dr. Booth said in a post last week that M/B states that the
design limit for our engine is 2%. Am I correct? Would this
supercede MOBIL's position?

I would think that DELVAC1 would meet all of M/B's requirement up
until the f-soot level is exceeded.
