[MBZ] 300td travels

2016-06-06 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks,

knock on wood, but my 83 300td has been performing flawlessly for the past month

mostly on grease, i've driven it

from athens, ga to tybee island 260 miles

from tybee to millen ga and back 180 miles

to new orleans and back to tybee probably 1700 miles including driving around
new orleans for 10 days

from tybee to charleston sc 250 miles round trip

then from tybee to red level al and andalusia al 430 miles each way (860 +
local driving)

ac running 98% of all travels

not bad for an old car

are there any list members in alabama?

i'm over here maybe buying a safari trek on an isuzu npr chassis

like this

http://www.nwtfc.com/treks/1992/1992_trek.htm

it's been sitting in a shed for 5 years so we'll see what there is to buy (at a
Kaleb price)

i need to make it work to transport it to somewhere more on the beaten path …
this place is way nowhere off of I-65 south of montgomery al

[MBZ] why benz?

2016-04-24 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

i learned to drive in a 1951 plymouth and took my driving test in a 1966 Ford
Ranch Wagon with stick shift on the column and overdrive about 1970

Then i mostly drove air cooled VWs with a bad luck Audi 90 wagon and a few
american pickups thrown it, for the next 25 years. We even ran a VW shop and
probably rebuilt 100 engines, personally.

About 1985 someone pointed out a Peugeot diesel wagon, 504, aBOUT 1976. I
bought that and spent the next 5 or 6 years messing with peugeot diesel engines
in 504 and 505 cars, mostly wagons. They would all have cracked heads at about
100k miles. Anyway, Peugeots are very nice cars. Finally i got smart and
switched to Peugeot gas cars. Turbo or non turbo, i never had a major engine
problem with a gas peugeot (only a few water pumps, hoses, etc) and i drove
them up until 7 or 8 years ago.

A good friend had a very nice 1982 300td that he was ready to sell. I bought it
probably about 2000 or so and gave it to my wife to drive. Pretty soon it was
mine and since i'm 8 or 9 years into the WVO experiments i continue to use it
as my daily driver although i have 3 or 4 other diesel mercedes on the road.

Mercedes has by far the best old diesel engines, at least in the 123 cars which
are all that i really know.

I much prefer the comfort and handling of a nice Peugeot 505 wagon.

So, for me, i guess a 617 engine in a peugeot wagon would be great!
thanks,

xx rick

[MBZ] HF aluminum jack

2016-03-08 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

i bought one of the HF aluminum jacks probably 9 months ago

i'll bet i haven't used it 10 times …. last time i tried (moving some printing
presses), the jack would rise with a pump of the handle bit it would not stay
up … it went back down immediately

the raise/lower valve seems functional

some check valve problem?

i've probably jacked 6 cars and maybe 3 or 4 printing presses

other than that it's been riding in the back of my 300td

interestingly, the same day the HF jack failed one like this failed as well

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Torin-2-Ton-Hydraulic-Trolley-Jack/33348135

it was an abused and used little jack. It's leaking out of the small pump. I
took it apart and replaced the o ring

it still POURED out fluid

what gives

i bought the walmart one for $17 or something a month or so ago …. ordered and
store pickup

it seems fine, but what to do with the other one

too much stuff

[MBZ] old benz motor home

2016-02-14 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
I sent the motor home ebay listing to my german buddy here in athens. Here's
what he wrote:

Both Thomas and i knew Uschi Obermeier and Dieter Bockholt , he owned a bar
in HH that we frequented . At least we saw them come in and out when they where
prepping for their journey Anyway they traveled the world in one of those OP
311. In 2006 i think a movie came out based on her story about them called “
Das wilde leben” you can watch it on netflix, i believe at least, i have
before . The english title is "8 miles high” . They recreated the bar for the
movie in the proper location and similar decor . It is really more about her
life then his . She is quite a celebrity in germany . She was a Groupie?/Model
, he was a pimp on St pauili . He died on a motorcycle in mexico at the tail
end of their relationship . She is now a US citizen living in CA . The movie is
worth watching if you can find it . I reckon they used the correct motorhome in
the movie if memory serves me right . It entertaining enough . I don’t know
about the you tube version as it has partial nudity in the movie .

[MBZ] turbo rebuild

2016-01-19 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
We rebuilt the turbo on my 1982 300td.

I bought a cheap kit somewhere …. amazon maybe or ebay and we followed some
online videos

They are fairly hard to take apart. You need to be very careful. I used a lot
of soaking in 50/50 acetone & ATF to loosen bolts. Hard to clean (we used
ultrasonic machine) and pretty easy to put back together.

Mine has been great for a year and a half or so.

Well in athens, ga the temp was down to about 24F last night. My 300td had 100%

the fuel was still colder. This evening i bought 5 gals of diesel for $2.09, at

there's Kroger and their discount program, too. With the 5 gals, i'm about
50/50 diesel and WVO. I can operate to around 32F with that mix.

[MBZ] scanning negs

2015-11-24 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
folks

i use nikon 4000 scanners for 35mm negs (firewire interface) and actually have
good luck scanning 120 negs with an epson v500 flatbed scanner (usb) with
backlight

mostly using vuescan (on macs)

i am generally making highest possible res (read HUGE FILES) which i then print
on a 17 inch wide epson 3800 printer

almost all black & white

it takes a long time to scan to the huge files

i hung a show of about 80 big prints in sept/oct …. all stuff shot from 1975 to
1985

i have on the nikon the sa-30 setup which will let you scan up to 40 frames if
you have uncut 35mm negs

about the only better equipment would be the nikon 5000 scanners and the newer
epson scanners that will scan up to 8x10 negs

nikon DOES have an 8000 and 9000 (if i have the models correct) but they are
slow for 35mm and cost beaucoup bux!

the learning curve is pretty steep with scanning, i found

http://www.scancafe.com/

has a good reputation …. they mostly ship it to india but if you pay more
they'll do it in SF

cheap for color a bit dear for B which is a lot slower to scan

that's all i know

I know it is bad form to reply to my own email, but I've received no
interest whatsoever from anyone about this car. It appears that no one

It's free. Such a deal. You'll just have to wait a little to get it

[MBZ] amoco white gas

2015-11-21 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
folks

amoco white gas as sold in SC and georgia in the 60's and 70's was high test
and lead free

i always ran it in coleman stoves without problems

here's what wikipedia says:

American Oil chose to continue marketing its premium-grade "Amoco-Gas" (later
Amoco Super-Premium) as a lead-free gasoline by using aromatics rather than
tetraethyllead to increase octane levels, decades before the environmental
movement of the early 1970s led to more stringent auto-emission controls which
ultimately mandated the universal phase out of leaded gasoline. The "Amoco"
lead-free gasoline was sold at American's stations in the eastern and southern
U.S. alongside American Regular gasoline, which was a leaded fuel. Lead-free
Amoco was introduced in the Indiana Standard marketing area in 1970.[6

[MBZ] kill a watt meter

2015-11-01 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

the library on tybee island lends a kill a watt meter

maybe many libraries have them? i don't know

or you can buy one

it looks like there are a lot of them now available cheaply

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps=kill+a+watt=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Akill+a+watt

borrowing one motivated me to replace my quite old, but working well
refrigerator

if you have any refrigerators more than 15 years old, i highly recommend
borrowing or buying the little meter. If you plug a device into it overnight or
for 24 hours, you can easily determine cost per month to run it

[MBZ] single payer health insurance

here's a good liberal article that says why we should have single payer health
insurance

http://www.salon.com/2015/06/26/americas_health_care_system_is_still_broken_why_single_payer_is_the_only_thing_that_will_ever_fix_it/

most western countries can manage it

Canada, UK, France, Portugal, Spain, Germany etc etc

you can argue against it all you want, but if we HAD IT (and this is especially
for people from age 0-65) you could probably afford to buy more old Mercedes

i love you all, but i generally vote Democrat in the absence of a more left

[MBZ] letterpress hauler

2015-10-30 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
folks,

that's a good looking truck …. but a bit large for my taste ….i'm guessing it's
a 22 or 24 foot body and probably at least 20,000 GVW? i'll bet it takes some
fuel.

I also haul presses in a 1992 isuzu NPR (running on WVO). The nicest thing
about my isuzu, besides that it drives like a car, is that it has less that
125,000 miles on it despite the age. It is SUPER nice and tight. I bought it
with maybe 116k miles about 4 years ago and about all i've done to it is
replace a water pump and i need to replace the AC compressor.

I'll be taking 2 machines from athens. ga to louisville, ky before thanksgiving
for a big pile of $$.

What i DO NOT like about the isuzu is that driving it i'm DOT … i have to have
a medical and keep logs and stop at weigh stations and take breaks etc etc etc
same as a truck driver (which i guess i am) but since i'm under 26,000 lbs i
don't need a CDL license.

did y'all understand that we HAVE the limo that's for sale in athens. It's in
my field and i assume it's some californic conversion

i can't imagine using it as a press hauler …. if you cut the roof it would
really have no strength but it IS a cool image (with the jib crane, of course)

i think it is reinforced and it's probably not as rusty as it looks … we should
peel the soft top and prime the roof and it would probably look better

i've never driven it but i think the owner (who paid maybe $4,500 for it in
some demented state of confusion) was scared to drive it … it was too long and
maybe has a huge turning radius … i don't know.

It is in the form of standing type forms (strips of type) and is clean and
ready to melt to make sinkers or bullets. I think the bullet people like the

I have mostly been selling it on ebay for $2/lb plus shipping. It can be
shipped relatively cheaply in USPS flat rate boxes …. 14 or 15 lbs fits in the

[MBZ] more testing my mercedes 300td AC

2015-09-27 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

So i did some inspection on the dead battery when it didn't respond to charging
overbite

The top side was blown out on the positive side.

A check with a meter indicated that i was charging at about 16+ volts

I grabbed my trusty Uro voltage regulator from the glove box and installed it
from above with not too much difficulty. The removed regulator was an old bosch
i had scavenged from a blown 240d 3 or 4 years ago. The brushes on it showed
some wear. The Uro works but i no longer had the borrowed meter and there
wasn't one in my car, so i still need to check the charge voltage.

Am i correct in thinking that a bad regulator can cause an overcharge condition.

i notice that i can now buy the Uro or identical regulators direct from HK or
China for about $6.78 delivered …. if they work, i need a couple in every 123
car. What other regulators are available and at what price points? I guess i'd
pay $18 for a Bosch made where? India? China? Hellas?

Just wondering what you've been using and success rates.

[MBZ] testing my mercedes 300td AC

2015-09-24 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

i've been out testing the 82 300TD AC and car.

I replaced the r4 compressor again about 2 weeks ago.

Last week i dragged a 1500 lb printing press to Tupelo, MS from athens, ga
relatively uneventfully. As i left there i had no vacuum or boost on the
brakes. Fortunately, the trailer was unladen on the return trip. Back in
athens, i was preparing to change the vacuum pump but got the idea to blow out
the check valve of the pump. I had already flushed it with some solvent. I blew
it out with the air hose last week and i've had good boost ever since.

So, Tuesday afternoon, i went out for another test. I drove 600 miles to
indianapolis, in. There i picked up a 1000 lb press and probably 500 lbs of
lead type.

I turned around and left indy about 5 pm wednesday and made it back to athens
about 4 am.

I stopped at the i-75 georgia welcome center about 1 am and made some coffee.
When i started back up the starter made a weak GRRR sound and barely turned the
hot engine over … which fortunately started instantly. I decided, wisely, that
i shouldn't shut it down.

I had some much crap in the car that i couldn't have much hope of finding the
meter, so i never checked for charge.

As i was on the home stretch about 10 miles out, i noticed that the lights
dimmed slightly when i put the AC blower on high fan.

When i got home, the starter wouldn't turn the engine over.

i am charging the battery now to start it and check the charging.

The alternator belts are tight and i guess i should check the rear wires to the
alternator.

So, AC test successful …. alternator test, less successful.

I drove about 2000 miles in the last 8 or 9 days …. 1000 miles dragging 1500
lbs … ac works

brake vacuum still good and maybe i'm not charging.

Had i realized that i wasn't charging, i'd have unplugged one headlight to
diminish the load on the battery

Not doing anything special i seem to have had 3+ hours of running with radio
and AC and lights, etc …. which is pretty good.

thanks,

[MBZ] florida winter Q

2015-09-20 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

i could be persuaded to go down to florida in say jan feb march…. try to plan
it not on spring break holiday times, i guess

i'm considering getting a vintage early 90's RV … specifically an isuzu npr
chassis Safari Trek 1991 isuzu chassis and 1992 model trek. The one i'm working
on has been parked down in south alabama (in a shed) for 2 or 4 years … someone
inherited it and that is the seller

sort of a pig in a poke deal, but cheap, cheap for a class a 26 footer

my guess is that if it has relatively clean diesel that it will fire right up
with some batteries

tires and brakes might be more problematic, but this is all speculation

they are supposed to have good fuel mileage (12.5 to 16 mpg owners claim which
is about like my NPR with a 16 foot box) and i can run one on WVO just like my
NPR

so maybe i'll be riding around in that

[MBZ] latest 1982 300td ac saga

2015-09-08 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks,

i did a stupid thing but it;s fixed now.

After the r4 ac compressor blew its housing a month ago, i had to fix it. I
bought a compressor on amazon and a receiver drier on ebay or somewhere and
found some more straight mineral oil and assorted seals and orings and etc.

I went to my ac expert. He hung the compressor and i hung the receiver. He's
younger than my 61 years and refuses to wear glasses. We were working at his
place about 40 miles north of here. We evacuated and charged the system with
some of my r12 stash.

About 10 miles south of him, headed to athens, i stopped for a few minutes and
then when i started again, NO AC. I stopped and looked at it and saw that the
ac belt had broken but the compressor was still free.

The next day we tried to install the belt and noticed that the pulleys didn't
line up. A little research by looking at some of my failed compressors
determined that the R4 installed on the Benz had an incorrect pulley for a
benz. So, the AC guy who refuses to wear reading glasses installed the
compressor with a pulley that was a belt width off alignment …. a guaranteed
failure.

SO, since i didn't want to pull the compressor and recharge the system, i
started studying how to remove the pulley. The compressor i bought was just
some random r4 for a GM application. I thought they all had the same pulley
setup. Anyway, i watched some videos by BOB on youtube about removing and
installing the clutch and pulley.

Fortunately, auto zone has LOTS of ac tools to borrow. I got a bunch of pullers
and such and easily took one apart on the bench.

Can it be done in the car …. Yes, with some effort. I had to remove the
radiator and then there is just enough room. There are a bunch of details. …
snap rings and beys in the shaft. So, probably 12 man hours later or more (not
including time researching the procedures) i am back on the road with ice cold
AC.

So, i was stupid for buying the wrong part.

My AC guy was even stupider for installing it

And i was even stupider that that for not comparing old and new part and not
inspecting the job better.

He DOES do a good job …. his work has held pressure (no freon added) for the 3
or 4 year life that is the max i've ever gotten out of an R4

Take heed and learn from my mistakes.

No animals were harmed and no freon was vented.

Now i'm off to Tupelo MS to deliver a 1500 lb printing press as soon as i get
the press ready and loaded. I hate hauling the ones that are that heavy.

thanks,

xx rick

i've speculated about blackness in the sls oil

i have it but don't worry about it

the black could also come from the deteriorated hose

you can change the seal on the back of the sls pump

i have one that i've never gotten around to doing (out of the car) and have
been running a pump out of a junker for several years

did those rear hoses from diamler cost a fortune?

i've had to replace front supply and high pressure hose, but i reused the ends
and had the HP one made for the supply hose i used some of the mesh looking
clear hose from lowes and it's held up fine for maybe 5 years and as a bonus
it's clear so you can see that you have fluid

[MBZ] ac compressor failure 300td 1982

2015-08-12 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

my perfect running 3 month old R4 compressor failed today.

AC had been running for maybe 2 minutes and i was going probably 10 mph.
Outside air temp about 90f. As i started off i heard and explosion POW and i
assumed i had had a blowout, then i saw a puff of oil smoke come out from
under the hood.

The new in MAY compressor seems to have popped open and, of course, let out all
the oil and R12.

I'd driven it a couple of thousand miles since the repair which consisted of a
good flushing, new drier, R12 and conventional refrigerant oil/

Compressor had been the quietest smoothest i'd ever had. I haven't checked
but i don't think the compressor actually mechanically failed because there was
never any noise beyond normal

email me directly if you want to see photos … i'm not messing with emailing
them to the list

i hat it because it's HOT

compressor was brand new not rebuilt from ebay $150 or so and supposedly
warrantied but no labor, i'm sure

We'll see

I need to do it all again because i have about 3000 miles of running around and
dragging stuff to do in the next month and the midwest is hot just like georgia

Have any of you ever seen such a failure

cleaned it up and printed a few business cards on it. Some kids called me from
St Augustine Beach and were looking for a press. I told them to come see me on
Tybee. They drove up to Tybee and tested the machine out. They wanted it.

So, Friday i loaded the 1000 pound machine on my trailer, filled up with WVO
and headed for florida. I left tybee about 2.30 pm and ran about 70 mph down
I-95 in the on and off rain with the AC ice cold. I love that R12. The last
hour or so was a downpour! After a couple of stops, i reached St Augustine
Beach about 7 pm. We unloaded and installed the press and i was paid and was
out of there by 9 pm. I grabbed a pizza and left St Augustine about 9.30 pm and
was back in Savannah by 12.30 pm ….i ran 70 to 75 on the return trip, some rain
and full AC.

It was a VERY eventful trip of about 195 miles each way according to google.
The car performed perfectly.

thanks,

xx rick

[MBZ] deutz

2015-07-17 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

i have a 5 cylinder air cooled deutz engine in an Iveco 1981 Z100 (pantechnicon
body)

i bought it in 1991 and used it for about 20 years. I put a clutch in it but
that was about all … a VERY trouble free engine

It's loud and probably 18 to 22 mpg in that truck

I sold it about 2 years ago for more than i paid for it in 1991. The guy paid
about 2/3 of the cost and never finished paying or picked it up so it sits.
Now, fortunately he's been paying $30 a month parking so in a few more years i
guess it'll be mine again and i can sell it again.

[MBZ] DOT REGS

2015-06-30 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks,

this reg is new to me

It is possible that occasionally you may not use a truck
in commerce at all. You may be moving your personal
belongings to a new house or, as a hobby, you may be taking
your horses to a horse show. As long as the activity is not
in support of a business, the Federal hours-of-service
regulations do not apply to you.

HOWEVER in the same section they discuss driving an empty truck and the fact
that even if you are not hauling you are still commercial

I'd hate to try to convince the DOT guy that i was using my commercial truck
recreationally …

The DOT guy is going to say you are commercial.

i've done lots of jobs where i was moving people's personal effects which
could even include a printing press.

[MBZ] cdl or not

2015-06-29 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

i know a fair bit about the DOT

it'squite complicated, sort of like the FAA (the dot is not happy until you
are not happy)

to drive my isuzu npr (about 12,000 gross) i have to have a dot number and a
dot program

i have to have a dot medical (like the faa) every 2 years …. $45 at a
chiropractor (who actually did a thorough job and checked everything)

only fluid taken was urine checked for diabetes

but since i am under 26,500 or whatever the max non CDL is, i do not have to
have a drug program (no testing) and i can drive on a car license

i have to keep logs etc and i have 3 notebooks of BS (mostly printed out forms
from the dot site and manuals)

i have to do annual and driver inspections etc

i just make sure i am in order when i go out on the interstates and have to go
to weigh stations

all this is for just me driving one truck

and it does't matter if i claim i am driving NOT for business … it all still
applies

there are some farm exemptions and for carrying BEES

i have to pay an interstate tax or something of $75 per year

i had a dot guy come and do a safety inspection (at my office) … that means
look at my paperwork

he was a nice good old boy and gave me a gold star …. he said it was pretty
perfect

It took me probably 20 hours to get it all together and looking right

i used to have a CDL when it was a class 5 or something in georgia but never
used it, so let it lapse

i'm actually thinking about getting an RV and towing machines behind that and
dot would probably not bother me

i am not subject to the DOT regs when driving a car or motorcycle etc
thanks,

xx rick

[MBZ] 123 300td AC

2015-04-27 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
So, we removed the frozen compressor (new 4 seasons ago or less)

We flushed about half the system with printing blanket/roller wash and blew it
out

we added about 8 oz of mineral oil to the compressor and the new drier

We installed a new $152 ebay compressor and the amazon $11.50 drier (Behr
branded from china)

We replaced a bunch of green o rings wherever we opened something

We used the $17 set of compressor sealing rings

We evacuated and charged it with genuine R-12

and …. voila …. 40 degree cold AC

it took two of us about 5.5 hours … i'm a decent mechanic and the other guy is
an AC expert, but we're both about 60 and it takes longer than it used to

i'll take it down to SAV in a few days and test it out

how long will it last, who knows

3 years sucks and 5 years would make me ecstatic! I never had to add freon
throughout the life of the last compressor

[MBZ] mowers and 123 AC

2015-04-26 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
I don't do all that much mowing, fortunately. I have a honda powered self
propelled push mower that is ok …. i bought it for $75 in SAV.

As for a lawn tractor, i'd go with a $1000 or $1500 kubota diesel mower … altho
i know few specifics, i know lots of mini farmers with kubota stuff and they
are happy with them.

A ten year old Kubota would HAVE to be better than the MTD crap a lot of which
is made in south georgia, i think.

MTD makes all brands like Electrolux for appliances.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTD_Products

My AC expert is coming down today and we're going remove the compressor and
dryer on my 82 300td. The 4 season ago new unit seized in the fall or spring

We'll do some flushing and reinstall and recharge with R12

I'd like to hope it would go longer than 4 seasons. Maybe that's why the brand
has that name

it's not all that nice, but since you lust after the 1985 ones so you need to

the engine seems to run well considering it was out of fuel

we added a gal of diesel and i pumped the primer but didn't bleed it and we got
it started with a decent battery (ours) at about 34 F

it seemed smooth

shifter was hard to shift but trans seemed ok

i never went over about 30 mph with no tag and the busted sway bar

i think i'll keep the euro lights and the seats seem nice and firm

As for the O ring, I can't say. I haven't looked at it or tried to remove

My previous response to this okiebenz message went to Dan, not the
list, by mistake. I think there are some electronic design wizards
here that can answer the current problem with the machine we each are
using. This is a vibratory pump in a 40 year old espresso machine
made in italy but wired for 110v. I think we can muster a picture of
the control knob if needed, plus maybe a picture of wiring. There is
a unique feature in this espresso machine - the speed of the pump can
be varied using rheostat control knob. 12 o'clock is silent pump.
Turn clockwise (cw) and the pump speeds up water thru thermoblock for
shots. Turn counter clockwise (ccw) and the pump is used to produce
steam for foamed milk. cw turn speeds pump goes from - to + as
noted on the control. ccw control goes from - to + to denote
amount of steam? However, steam production is not ideal so we are
wondering if old caps or other electro-gizmo might be old after 40
years. Perhaps the rheostat needs a spray of DeOxit? What else in
this type of electric control can go bad in years of very light
 service?

Dan, perhaps we need to read the instructions?

Below is my description to Dan yesterday about what I am seeing -
Dan's notes above show he is in approximately the same quandry (choppy
vibe pump noise) about producing steam. As noted, most espresso
machines do not have a control that varies the pump speed.

[MBZ] high school and college cars

2015-02-02 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

I have come onto many interesting cars. When i was about 15 or 16 i bought a
Renault 4CV (looks like a morris minor with suicide doors in the front) that
was sitting behind a house in Aiken SC.

I got the title and the car showed only about 20,000 miles.

I paid $20. I STILL have the car in a garage here in Athens, GA. We managed to
lose the engine along the way, but i do have a dauphene engine that fits it.

Another project. The car is complete less engine.

In about 1976 i bought a VW bug …. an old one, not a split window, but i think
a 54 or 55. It ran and we drove it around a little and then parked it in a
garage. It had a replacement engine that was a 36 hp rather than the original
20 or whatever it was.

I kept it till about 1990 and sold it for $1000 which was good money in 1990.
thanks,

xx rick

dauphines are cool. I almost bought one for my first car (it was $35) but it
had the dreaded automatic stick shift transmission and fortunately i studied it
and read about it and didn't buy it.

The 4cv was the post wwII renault made from 1947 to 1961

i guess they are common in france …. who knows now

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_4CV

i would sell mine

[MBZ] first car

2015-01-29 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

The first car i ever drove was about a 1945 jeep out in the mountains of
Colorado. I learned to drive mostly on a 1951 plymouth which my father bought
new and i still have in the field. MY first car was a 1962 VW bus. I bought it
for $50 and rebuilt the engine myself. I got stuck with driving and repairing
air cooled vw cars for the next 15 years or so.
