How much cash money should be waved at them if it proves to be as described?

You're kidding! Next Monday I'll be in L.A. visiting the oldest daughter.
She is coming to the States for business back from Tokyo for a few days.
You kids have a nice time and be careful.

I shall ask for records. My youngest girl child told me that the E320, in
the Polar White, looked like an "old man's car". She doesn't think her dad
needs an "old man's car" yet, bless her heart.

There are cheap used cars to be had that will get mileage close to
what a hybrid will get you in real-world driving. I've thought
seriously about an '80s Honda CRX or Toyota MR2 for a commuter. Fun,
pretty reliable, and probably 25 mpg city and 35+ highway if you are
gentle with the right foot.

Of course, they weigh not much more than a ton, and crunch up like a
pop can in an accident. You pays your money and you takes your
choice.

Being ignorant of the Lap-Band system I Googled it and went to
http://www.lap-band.com/lapband/portal.do where they offer a
test to determine if people qualify - to my great surprise - at 6'1
and 235 I thought I was grossly overweight (still do) but the
calculator says my BMI does not qualify. Humbug!

I don't have a credit card. Renting a car is a pain but certain places will
allow the use of a debit cardbut they charge like $400 then credit what
you don't spend.

I may have to break down and get a credit cardespecially if we go to
Japan.

I'm not sure what to use on the interior, I just do as the book says and
wipe it down with warm water and soap and dry. I use Eagle One on the car
with leather, which is great. I've used Lexoyl a few times, which I think

If the car quits burning oil and sprays it out the breather instead,
you might see if there's a big gap in the breather tube in the valve

If the oil still comes out the exhaust without the breather dumping
oil in the intake, it's got to be coming through the rings, valve
guides, or head gasket. If the car passes a cylinder leakdown test,
I'd think the valve stem seals would be worth trying."

I had a 450SL that smoked vilely due to damaged seals on
one cylinder. (It also fouled that plug quickly.) I replaced
only the two and drove it for thousands of miles and several
years before selling the car. Cured the problem completely.
It wasn't all that hard on that particular car.

Is the temp sender in the engine compartment (where the wire connects to) or

Very likely a bad temperature sender. Replace it, and have someone
do the usual thermo wax test on the thermostat housing to verify.

It's possible, although unlikely, that the thermostat housing is
leaking past the thermostat, but I think you would notice that.

Peter typed:

"Sounds like the Vienna I started a couple weeks ago -- full decoction
mash, lower volume that I intended ( 5 rather than my standard 6), so
the initial gravity is 1.058.

I made a DoppleBock for Big Brew Day last year that took for bleeding
ever, but turned out wonderful. Initial gravity was 1.080, I think,
took months to ferment out.

What are you using for hops -- I bought a year's supply in the fall,
before the Hop Crisis, so I'm OK for now, but our local microbrewer
(also a club member) is reduced to using Argentinean Cascade."

Since I can't drink anymore I wonder if I'm still allowed to read posts like
that?

Bob,

In AZ, the limit for passenger diesels is 20% Opacity. That's a lot
of smoke. And a little secret Plan on taking it for the
emissions test when the wind is blowing!
Back when I had the '80 300SD, the worst it blew was 4% and when it
was windy, it went down to 1%..

And before you go in, run it hard and keep it hot..

Take care,

Chuck

2008-02-17 Thread Robert Rentfro
Good idea, Chuck.
Speaking of keeping it hot, I've been through three t-stats (two from Rusty
I think) and with all of them the hottest it ever gets is just to the tic
mark above the 110 degrees F. There was one time, when after removing the
top hose to put Tom's AC clutch on, I neglected to top off the radiator it
ran at 175 degrees F but when I looked in the radiator I could see no level.

What's going on here? This car has always run cold.

I love Rusty's subtle "BUY FROM RUSTY" responses.

Remember, he does support the group and he's a great resource & you
should buy from him even if he's a few $$$ higher.

Yes, though I have related it a year or so ago. I was a student at
Lynchburg College [great school, BTW] and was heading to DC in 1971 in my
'62 220Sb to visit an old roommate. I was going into an 'S' curve at 2:30
AM in the pouring down rain. A Camero was coming out of the curve and all I
remember [for the next two weeks] is saying 'that car is going too fast' ...
A trucker who saw the wreck in his mirrors said it was a Keystone Cop sort
of image with both cars going up and then smashing down. I would estimate
my speed at 50 when she hit me, and there were 14' of skid marks behind my
car, none at all from hers, and she was going a good deal faster. My car
stopped at the scene and hers took a bounce. At that time they did not do
blood alcohol levels on corpses, but she was driving her boyfriends car with
her brand new driver's license, and speeding in the rain at 2:30 AM on a
curving 2 lane after leaving a party. She was either drunk or terminally
stupid. My car did not have the lap belts installed [long story], which
would have killed me from the angle of impact, but the flat MB steering
wheel prevented any internal injuries. I think with a full modern restraint
and airbag system I would not have been seriously injured. The top of the
wheel hit me at tooth level and took all of them out as well as my lower jaw
[they found and refitted 4 of 5 pieces and most all of the teeth], and also
caused a C-2/3 spinal break [C-2/3 controls the heart and breathing I think,
which is why I believe hitting at an angle with a lap belt would have been
worse than hitting straight on without one]. My right knee took out an
add-on AC unit, cutting the knee almost through and sending my smashed femur
into daylight [well, not daylight at 2:30 AM]. Multiple compound fractures,
some closed ones, and cuts all over. I had an opportunity to see the car
three months later when I got out of the hospital and didn't recognize it.
The crumple zones and flat wheel did their job, though. She [Camero driver]
died from being impaled on the steering wheel; the kid beside me died from
hitting the side pillar [he was asleep with his head against the side
window]. Kid in the rear seat and the passenger in her car got off pretty
well, considering. All in all nothing I would recommend getting into, but it
did increase my already strong love of MB.

[MBZ] Things That Happen While Fueling

2008-02-09 Thread Robert Rentfro
Went to get fuel at Safeway since everywhere else fuel has reached Safeway's
$3.45 price. While mashing in my PIN, I heard the unmistakable klatta klatta
coming up behind me and it turns out to be a sweet '79 300SD. The angle of
the sun doesn't allow me to see the driver but I hear the door close.
Someone approaches and I hear in a heavy German accent, "How are you young
man? Long time no see" It turns out to be an elderly woman from whom I
almost bought a '68 300SEL from probably five or six years ago. At that time
she had just lost her husband, a retired Pan Am pilot. She wanted to sell
his 300SEL. Her price, as I recall, was high but I do remember seeing the
300SD under a car cover in the carport. She told me she had no intention of
selling it, but I could look. She helped me remover the cover and I almost
couldn't breath..it was perfect and had 41K miles on it. "I will be driving
this when I get my eyes fixed" she told me. I told her when she's ready to
sell, let me know and she said, "Zweifellos" and I was on my way. I cannot
believe she remembered me today. Her 300SD is still perfect and it now has
52K miles on it. She said she sees me around town and she still has my
number to call me when she's ready to sell. Crazy.

the pats have a pretty formidable defense, albeit not dominating.

the giants defense really stepped up. superhuman intensity. i've never
seen a team step up on the post season the way the giants did this year.

As a matter of fact, the best commercial was the Reebok k just on PTI on
ESPN where the delivery guy brought Mercury Morris a packagea game ball
from Eli...and the last shot is a road sign saying, "Welcome to

Nice.

If you can read this ;-)
If it were me, I'd replace the video card - especially if yours is more than

5 years old (they're not very expensive)- if that doesn't help, it's new

Try cleaning the contacts where the monitor cable connects to the
video card, and the monitor end if it's a connector instead of
hardwired in. Otherwise, I suspect that the monitor is dead/dying.

Oh okay, here:

At a four way stop (or a three way stop) I wish folks would really just know
the law and follow it. Things would be so simple, and so much time saved.

Instead, most seem to want to play the eye contact and wave-on game. Call me
antisocial (I am) but I am not required to interact on that level with other
drivers. I am required to follow the law. I love it when I don't make eye
contact at a four-way, and the other driver, so convinced that eye contact
is the law, all but refuses to go, even though they were clearly there
first. Given enough time, I'll pull my keys out of the ignition and show
them to the indignant driver.

Re: [MBZ] OT Taking a Poll on Tailgating - Not a Rant

2008-01-31 Thread Robert Rentfro
People from CA have a bad habit of driving in the left lane while doing at
or just below the speed limit. I will sometimes come up right behind them
and tailgate them in an effort to get them to get the heck in the right
lane. I don't flash my lightthis isn't the Autobahn.

Was not trying to condone tailgating, I guess my point is that when
you get into a pissing match on the expressway eventually someone is
going to end up hurt or dead.

I stand by my position though that if you are impeding traffic in the
left lane you should move right. You are not there to enforce the
speed limits (unless you happen to be a law enforcement officer).
Sudden braking in the left lane, moving right to thwart a pass on the
right after you've already blocked the other driver to the left to
"teach a tailgater a lesson" is as childish as the tailgating, and is
escalating the situation.

I've been in a car with a friend who was pulled by a state trooper
for driving in the left lane. The left lane is for passing, and he
was not passing, he was just driving there. The cop approached from
the rear, my friend did not move right and though he was not driving
under the limit he was pulled over. You cannot lollygag in the left
lane and you cannot drive there pacing the traffic to the right.
"Slower traffic keep right" is what the signs say. Speeding is a
separate and unrelated offense, as is tailgating.

You can make mad money making pizzas if you're careful. Back in the day
(early '80s) when my brother=in-law and I owned some sub shops near Bradley
University in Peoria, IL, we had a small freestanding building.
Long story short, made good money...sold thriving business to a guy who
didn't appear like a putz, he tries to cut corners to make more money and
went belly up in less than a year.

what do most americans eat for pizza?

Most of the pizza available near me is either Pizza Hut, Dominoes or others
trying to immitate them. There's also Round Table which is better, but it
doesn't do anything for my pizza craving other than to remind me that I need

some REAL PIZZA! . There's a place on the southern Washington coast (Long

ingredients piled high atop a reasonably thin and crunchy crust. Now that's

a pizza!
