Re: [MBZ] Tire Warning

2017-08-02 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
When I was making the decision whether or not to transfer the tires from my old
Beetle TDI to the new one, I was researching the continental tires that were on
the new one. On their website, it was stated that only the replacement tires
have a road hazard warranty. The OEM tires that they put on new cars do not
have road hazard protection. I had the tires and wheels transferred over to my
new Beetle since they have a high mileage warranty and road hazard protection,
and they are also much better tires.

Was it a Passat? They were the only models equipped with a DEF system until
2015. I read something about a fix for those. Maybe, they will come up with a
fix for the non-DEF models like my ex-beetle at some point.

Re: [MBZ] OT My 2014 VW Beetle TDI Convertible will soon be bought back by VW

2017-05-24 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I bought it on June 25, arrived home on the 26th, and the settlement was
approved on the 28th. I think that the PO bought a vergasser convertible. After
purchasing the new 2015, I discovered that the PO removed the wind deflector as
the mounts were installed in the trunk which were not installed in the 2015.
The 2015 top boot matches the beige interior, and the 2014 came to me with a
black boot. My theory is that he used the wind deflector in his new car, and
switched out the boot as well.

[MBZ] OT My 2014 VW Beetle TDI Convertible will soon be bought back by VW

2017-05-23 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
The end is near for my ownership of the 2014 Beetle TDI Convertible. I
scheduled my buyback appointment for Monday, June 12, 2017. It will be going
back with around 16Kmi on the clock. Coincidentally, that is nearly a year to
the day from when I originally contacted the seller in Templeton, CA. I paid
$21,500 for the car, and $1600 for tires, the convertible wind block and TDI
floor mats which will be installed on my new 2015 model. The buyback offer is
$28,841.61 which may vary slightly due to mileage, and the new car was $24,749.
The ownership experience with the 2014 has been wonderful! Even better, it
gave me the opportunity to purchase the brand new 2015 without any additional
cost other than the flight, hotel and fuel for the awesome road trip. I know
that it’s not a Mercedes, but it certainly has quite a lot of fun factor, and
the little TDI is zippy! It does use Pee, AKA Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)
which the 2014 does not.

We had the top down at least half of the time since the weather was very warm

was a bit rainy, so we kept the top up. That was the longest road trip I’ve
ever done, and the Beetle was very comfortable for both of us! Two guys, a
convertible, open road, great tunes and good food along the way, all while
averaging 38MPG, what more can you ask for?
I was quite satisfied with the deal I got on the car. Sticker was $31,843.
Since I went with the lease for the best discount, I saved $8500 which brought
the price down to $23,343. After $800 for Title, reg and other local fees as
well as the $763 wind deflector, the OTD price was $24,549. After I get the VW
buyback money for the 2014, I should still come out ahead even with the money
spent on the trip. The flights were free since we had racked up points for
Southwest Airlines. Now, I have a brand new 2-year-old TDI with 2800 miles on
it! Shortly, I’ll send pics of both Beetle TDI Convertibles in the driveway.

[MBZ] OT picked up The 2-year-old, Brand New Beetle convertible TDI diesel yesterday

2017-04-28 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
The flight to Houston went well. Someone from the dealership picked us up,
and we went right to work on the deal. On the test drive, the check engine
light came on right away. We went back to the dealership, and finished all the
paperwork while they were fixing it. Then, we put our bags in the trunk,
dropped the top and headed straight into the big city of Houston. After
stepping on it to merge into traffic, the check engine light came on again.
They had to replace The knock sensors which fixed the problem. we were finally
on our way after spending a total of nearly 4 hours at the dealership! The 40
minute drive across town to our hotel was uneventful! With temperatures in the
mid 70s and lots of sunshine, a great contrast to our Oregon weather, it was a
wonderful ride!
Kevin, about to start the long trek back to Hillsboro, Oregon
PS, I will take some pictures of the car in front of the hotel before we drive
off.

Re: [MBZ] BDub dizzels

2017-04-19 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
In my case, the buyback is going to cover all but $1000 of the OTD price.
Basically, this means that I am able to upgrade my 2014 with a brand-new 2015
for $1000! Of course, I could get a blah gray color Beetle with a black
interior and top within 40 miles of me, but I don't like the black top and
seats since they get so hot in the sun!! Now, there will be two Moonrock
silver Beatles with beige tops and interiors in town, and they will both be in
my driveway!

Re: [MBZ] OT - 2015 Jetta 2.0 Diesels

2017-04-18 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Yes, these are brand-new 2015 TDI diesel's that have never been sold. I have
decided to take the buyback offer on my 2014 beetle convertible TDI and pick up
one of these 2015's. I was even able to find one that was the exact same color
with only 35 miles on it, but it's in Houston!! Road trip!! The price I was
quoted was $5000 off the sticker if it is financed through VW, and $8000 if it
is leased! My nephew and I are flying to Houston next Thursday, and driving it
home over the weekend. Since I will still have the 2014, I will be able to swap
over the wheels and upgraded tires to the 2015. I could not pass up the deal!

Re: [MBZ] OT Can you hear my Pious now?

2016-11-15 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
This has been a long time coming! It can be difficult for a blind person to
hear a Prius while crossing a busy intersection. My guide dog was trained to
detect a Prius, and demonstrated that Prius Prowess several times during our
2.5 week training period. The Prius sound choice should be put up for popular
vote.

Re: [MBZ] New (Diesel) Addition to the Driveway

2016-11-12 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
You got an awesome deal! $1700 for a 300D Turbo Diesel with 125k and well
maintained? You could drive it out here to the Pacific Northwest and triple
your money as it sits!! After some "Martha-ing," you could try for $6k!!
Here's one for similar money with double the mileage on the clock.

How does the VCDS work? Is this the setup that links to the car using a

[MBZ] OT First Oil Change, 2014 VW Beetle TDI

2016-07-19 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Hello listers. Today, I finally had the time and equipment to change the oil
in my Beetle TDI 15Kmi. I set up my topsider, took out the dipstick, and
pumped it up. It worked flawlessly! To get to the oil filter, I had to remove
the decorative engine cover which is held in place by a ball and socket mount
in each corner, I was greeted by an engine covered with wires and hoses going
every which way. So where’s the dang oil filter???After a few minutes of
feeling around and a few more minutes on Google, I found an informative post
describing the exact location and the 32mm socket needed for removal. Luckily,
Dad gave me all his tools once he could no longer work on cars, so I found the
ratchet, socket, and the appropriate extension. It had to be long enough for
the ratchet to clear the cooling line just above the filter housing. It broke
loose easily, but I had to finish the last few turns by hand since I needed
clearance to remove the socket. I had to be careful when removing the filter
from the spring-loaded mechanism that holds it onto the inside of the cap since
the plastic teeth can break off. This went off without a hitch. I then
lubricated and inserted the provided filter cap o-ring and mounted the new
filter. The installation of the filter also went well. The kit I bought came
with a 5.0l jug of Ravenol 5w/30 full synthetic motor oil that meets the VW
507.00 specification. I put in the 4.3l (4.54qt of oil and fired it up. The
engine sounded quieter and smoother. I’m sure that the next one will take haf
the time if I don’t forget by the time I reach the 10Kmi interval.

Re: [MBZ] OT My VW Beetle TDI Convertible

2016-06-27 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Hi, Curt. I didn’t know that the DSG is actually a computer-controlled manual
transmission. with the radio on and the AC pumping, it’s hard to hear the
engine even at highway speeds. I’m amazed how QUIET it is! Regarding
maintenance, it is ready for an oil change,. Also, it appears that the tires
may have only been rotated once, if at all, during it’s 15K miles on the road.
I noticed that the front tires have been under-inflated for some time since
both sides of the tread face are severely worn while the center portion is less
worn. They seem to be past the point where rotation will correct them. I’m
going to look up the maintenance schedule for the DSG and the timing belt which
I don’t need to worry about until 60Kmi?

Yes, it is a very fun car. I can’t wait to enjoy it some more, particularly
with the top down! It does have some sort of rollover protection system that
deploys (sure don’t want to find out how it works first hand!)

[MBZ] OT My VW Beetle TDI Convertible

2016-06-26 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
The beetle TDI is finally parked out in the driveway! We had to take a much
quicker two day drive to Oregon instead of the original plan of nearly 4 days.
It is a great little car! The DSG transmission is kind of interesting. The way
it launches from a stop is much like the feel of a manual transmission as it
engages the clutch, very different from a conventional automatic, and kind of
fun and the torque of the diesel pushes you back in the seat. It was a bit too
hot to put the top down for a long period of time, especially for my guide dog
in the backseat. It was fun for a few minutes though. It averaged a little
over 35 miles per gallon at 75 to 80 mph. I'm sure we could have squeezed quite
a bit more mileage out of it at slower speeds

Re: [MBZ] How Did it All Begin?

2016-04-26 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
My Mercedes Diesel addiction began when I was 4 years old. My Uncle Al bought
a new 1976 300D, and I fell in love with the Klatta Klatta sound, the solidness
and that wonderful interior smell. Whenever he would pull up, he would get on
his in-car PA system mike and say “Can you hear my Diesel?” After that, I
would ask him how many miles he had racked up since the last time I saw him.
It got to be a ritual as time went by and the miles just kept adding up over
100K, 200K until it got to 380K miles. I joked with him about taking the car
when he was done with it. When he retired it at 380K, he said that it was worn
out, and he said that he was donating it to charity. I was crushed, but
determined to get one some day. That day came in September of 2002 in the form
of a 1978 300D for $2500. Everything worked on that car (for a while), but I
learned a lot with that car including how to change shocks, brake pads, engine
and transmission mounts, fuel filters, hand primer pump, fuel injectors and
return hoses, door checks, seat foam refreshing and probably a couple more
things I’m forgetting. Over the next 10 years, I bought another 1978 300D, a
1977 300D, a 1978 300CD, a 1973 220D I wasn’t able to get running, a 1981 300CD
on which I learned how to adjust the valves, a 1983 300SD, a $750 1977 240D
that was an awesome car, a 1987 300TD that needed way more work than it was
worth, and the last one, a 1981 300D with a failing transmission that I also
decided not to keep. I’ve been Benz-less for nearly 4 years now, but I’m
thinking of getting another one.

2015-10-20 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Our personal driver, skinny, petite lady, has a 2001 SLK320, and loves it.
It’s a well kept example with just under 80K miles on it. She rejected the
SLK230, underpowered and tinny sounding.

I noticed that the engine in my 1978 300CD was quieter and ran much smoother
within a few miles after changing to M1 synthetic. This was the car that I
bought in Southern California and drove up to Oregon. My theory is that the
engine is noisier since it’s working harder when it isn’t turning as freely.

For a growing community of winter cyclists in Milwaukee, this sounds like
the perfect weather to bring out the bike.

Year-round cycling is on the rise in the Midwest city — where winter lows
can go south of zero. It’s a trend that debunks critics around the country
who say bike lanes will only be used in fair weather.

Dave Schlabowske, deputy director at the Wisconsin Bike Federation, says
he’s seen a drastic change in the last 15 years that he’s been biking to
 work through the winter.

“Back then, if I saw somebody I didn’t know biking in February, I’d email
the six other people I knew who biked in the winter and tell them about it,”
he says. “Now I see people out there all the time.”

In snowy months, the city government’s top priority for helping bikers is
simply keeping the streets plowed, including the city’s 85 miles of bike
lanes (almost 30 miles of which were put down in the last two years). Bike
racks on the front of every city bus make it easier for riders to combine
 different modes of transportation.

“Winter’s just a fact of life in Wisconsin — it is what it is,” says Kristin
Bennett, the city’s bicycle/pedestrian transportation coordinator. “People
have the same travel needs no matter the time of the year.”

While the city doesn’t have data on winter bikers — it’s working to install
bike traffic counters this year — anecdotally, almost everyone agrees winter
 biking is on the rise.

One innovation making winter biking easier is the popularity of fat tire
bicycles — souped-up mountain bikes equipped to ride on snow-covered trails.
There are five different bike companies in Wisconsin that now produce fat
 tire bikes.

“It’s taken off,” Bennett says. “Everyone’s asking about them.”

Sales of fat tire bikes, which range from $250 to $5,500 in price, totaled
$8.8 million across the country last year, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
 reported.

While he says overall winter business is currently slow at Crank Daddy’s
Bicycle Works, co-owner Eric Kuhagen says more people have been buying
winter gear and fat tire bikes than in past winters. Thick gloves and warm
booties that go over shoes are among the top-selling items.

“Riding your bike in any weather, it’s not about the weather, it’s about the
proper gear,” Kuhagen says. “That’s true for any sport, not just cycling.”

Milwaukee isn’t the only frigid Midwest city where bikers aren’t afraid of
the winter. In her first proclamation in office last year, Minneapolis Mayor
Betsy Hodges named January 3rd “Winter Biking Day,” calling Minneapolis
cyclists “tougher and much better looking than bicyclists from all those
wimpier cities.” And this year, for the first time, the streets department
in Calgary has been directed to clear priority cycling routes when snow
 falls.

Not everyone is on board with the winter biking trend. “In the winter, it
won’t even be used,” is a common refrain from many bike lane opponents. One
upstate New York mayor suggested last year that winter bikers “should be
arrested” because they’re putting others in danger.

Schlabowske says it’s the opposite — while commuting to work on his bike, he
has helped drivers push cars out of ditches by the side of the road.

“I haven’t driven a car to work in 15 years,” he says.

One small business taking advantage of the winter months is Flavor Cycle, a
food delivery company that brings Milwaukeeans restaurant meals by bike.
More orders come in as the temperature drops, and the company’s fleet of 18
contracted delivery people typically clock 30 to 40 miles every six-hour
 shift.

“When one day you’re out in subzero windchill, and the next day it’s 10
degrees, 10 degrees feels fantastic,” says owner Peter DiAntoni. He also
jumps in the saddle to make deliveries. “Once you’ve hit the hardest part,
 everything’s easier.”

But like most winter bikers — and the rest of the city — Flavor Cycle will
close shop during especially nasty snowstorms.

“Everyone who’s doing this job loves it, they love the challenge,” DiAntoni
says, but “we’re not martyring ourselves.”

Subject: [MBZ] Two weeks with the MotoX

I don't remember if I mentioned that I finally dropped the hammer on the
MotoX with Republic Wireless but I'm on my way out of my second week with
 it.
Results are positive. I only have a couple minor complaints which will
probably be fixed once I know more about Android.
The biggest positive is predictive typing and autocorrect which are vastly
superior to the iPhone 5 I had before, I've played with swipe type a little
but while its neat I don't know if I'll ever really get into it.
I LOVE the rounded back phone. Why does Apple insist on hard corners? The
front edges of my macbook pro cut my wrists too, bad design.

Republic's use of WiFi for calls has been pretty flawless. It hands off to
cellular nicely, if we didn't not have cell phones I'd consider the $5 WiFi
only option for a home phone.

Anyway, I'm still getting used to it but all things considered Apple would
have to do something amazing to lure me back to a phone that costs twice as
 much with no advantages.

The asking price for a similar truck around here depending on the rust would

We went over today but they were closed. I'll go back next week. On second
look the Dakota for $6k looks like a decent deal. 2000, 4 door, leather,
4wd, 5.9l v8. I forget the mileage but not too bad. If I can get it for
