[MBZ] 1981 Mercedes 280 CE CABRIO!
I will just leave this here for my friend Dwight Giles. ;) A friend in Ireland sent me the link. It has a 'petrol' engine, and an auto tranny but. I thought you might be interested to see it! ;) It was done in the BMW Baur 'Top Cabriolet' style: fixed windows and built-in roll bar. The unusual design was in response to the movement back in those days to ban convertibles because they were considered 'unsafe in a rollover'. Hence the fixed windows and built-in roll bar in effect, a roll cage. In response to that 'ban' movement, American factory production of convertibles ceased altogether with the 1976 Cadillac ElDorado, and it did not resume until the crisis had passed (convertibles were never actually banned) about 6 or 7 years later.Cars like the BMW Baur, and this Mercedes, are historical artifacts of that nearly forgotten period in automotive history. "1981 Mercedes 280 CEW. This is basically a 280CE with a SOFT TOP. They are very few about. This is the only on in Ireland, as far as I know. Re: [MBZ] Any Bimmer Folks Here?
I am not personally familiar with the system since the 2003 Z4 is far newer than any of the BMWs I own, but I did find this in bimmerforums: "just an FYI illustration of the BST (battery safety terminal) for those unfamiliar with it: (MRS III is the multiple restraint system...so that's why the SRS light illuminates...and the car won't start because it's disconnected from the high amp distribution box, starter and alternator/generator)" My understanding is that it is, indeed, a one-time use, and needs to be replaced. I don't know if a serviceable item may be available at a junkyard. Here is the illustration, if permitted. Here is the link to the bimmerforms thread, see post #8 for the above illustration: http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?2239275-Battery-SRS-terminal-explosion=battery+safety+terminal Hope this helps. Re: [MBZ] O/T Chess and Alien Abductions
I have been following the event in St Louis. It is not totally without precedent, however. The World Champion used to sit out the 'playoffs', so to speak, and just take on the winner as the Challenger. In 1970, Fischer dominated his contemporaries[6] by winning the 1970 Interzonal Tournament by a record 3½-point margin and winning 20 consecutive games, including two unprecedented 6–0 sweeps in the Candidates Matches.[7] In July 1971, he became the first official World Chess Federation (FIDE) number-one-ranked player, spending 54 total months at number one. In 1972, he captured the World Chess Championship from Boris Spassky of the USSR in a match, held in Reykjavík, Iceland, publicized as a Cold War confrontation which attracted more worldwide interest than any chess championship before or since.[8] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Fischer An amazing run. In regard to the FIDE President, Ilyumzhinov , and the alien abduction issue, and even Bobby Fischer, for that matter. I am reminded of my favorite Chess quote: Chess is not a mark of great intellect, but rather a mark of great intellect GONE WRONG! --New York Morning Telegraph, 1898. I am a little late to the party here but I do believe that I have a set of Euro headlights from my 1976 W115 300D that I scrapped long ago. [MBZ] DC
Hi Kaleb, I agree with Andrew's suggestions about the Mall, with the additional suggestion that you not miss the Lincoln Memorial. The scale of it is amazing, both the Lincoln sculpture as well as The Gettysburg Address, and his Second Inaugural Address which are carved on the huge inner walls. From the rear Portico, you can see the Eternal Flame on JFK's grave across the Potomac in Arlington Cemetery; from the front you see the Vietnam Memorial on the left, and the line of sight down the Mall... the Reflecting Pool, Washington Monument, the center of the Dome of the Capitol, and RFK Stadium in the far dstance are all on a center line. There is a building height restriction in DC so that nothing interferes with this view. The boys will love the Air and Space Museum especially, but all the Museums are worth whatever time you can afford to spend. Go to Georgetown on Friday evening and take a stroll along M Street and up Wisconsin Avenue. It will be teeming with life. Interestingly enough, I will just miss you. I am driving down with my son Friday to a big BMW show (Bimmerfest East) in Aberdeen, MD on Saturday, and staying in Georgetown on Saturday and Sunday night. Enjoy your trip. Re: [MBZ] Philly
Hi Kaleb, My son went to college in Philly. There is a straight shot from Philly across southern Jersey to the Jersey shore, via the Atlantic City Expressway. If you are coming thru NYC, you would take the Garden State Parkway to the shore, rather than go to Philly and then head east. NYC traffic really depends on the day and time of travel. I-95 in southwestern CT can be a 20 mile + parking lot if you time it wrong. Don't even think about it during morning (7-9am) or evening (3-6 or even 7 on a Friday) rush hours. Other than that it isn't bad unless there is an accident that ties things up. On a good day I can make it straight thru the city and across the Hudson River in 90 minutes from here (about 115 miles). That is exceptional, however. And You-know-who wasn't riding shotgun. On the other hand, on a bad Holiday weekend, it has taken me 8 hours to get to NYC. I don't know what your travel time frame is but if you do go to the Jersey shore, you could continue south to Cape May, NJ, take the Cape May -Lewes, Del. ferry, drop down to Ocean City MD, and then come across the DelMarVa peninsula to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge at Annapolis, and then on to Washington, DC. Has the family ever seen Washington? The Chesapeake Bay Bridge at Annapolis is not for the faint of heart, btw. It is a thin ribbon in space, high and spectacular--- I love it but it scares the bejesus out of my wife. Let me know if your itinerary brings you through SE CT. Message-ID: banlktin_vv-rc8u8xqtxd+jdwgmfhzo...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 The other day, I thought how great it would be to put a lighter (excuse me, power socket) in the HVAC control unit of the SDL. I cut out a hole, put in the lighter, snapped in the interconnects to the hazard light. Put it into the console. Plugged in a thing, it powered up. Next day, I plugged the thing in again, and it was tight so I jiggled it in a little... and the radio went off. Obvious fuse, windows and blower motor still work so it is just a nice quiet ride. When I get to work I pull out control panel, realize there is a big metal bracket behind my lighter, and it must have grounded out. Put on a shielded connector, so the problem is solved; remind self to buy more red fuses from Rusty when I place my next order (which will be soon anyway). Next day, replace fuse for radio and drive to work. Radio and hazard light are good, but now windows [not sunroof] are dead. That afternoon I replace the window etc. power fuse. On the way home it seems everything works: wipers, radio, seat settings, lighter, etc. Happy driver me. Then I open my door, and the radio comes on, along with the SRS light. I close the door. It turns off. I open the door and turn off the radio. A second later the SRS light goes off. If I have the radio on when I open the door, the SRS light turns on, and stays on as long as the radio is on; if I do not, it does not. Aside from SRS and the radio [and antenna going up and down with radio power] I can't tell anything different than it used to be. Thus I was introduced to my gremlin. Now, how do I make him go away? Did I fry a ground? The radio? The ignition switch? Will it do any damage, as long as I unplug power to the antenna? Back in the late 60's, I drove a 1968 Triumph Spitfire from DC up to CT, getting 30 mpg. On the return trip, from CT down to Wash DC, I got 36 mpg. It was a simpler time, of course, and I just figured the mpg increase was due to the fact that the return trip was all downhill as a glance at the map will clearly show. :) Tom Schuch 1975 W115 300D and all those BMWs Message: 10 Date: Tue, 19 Apr 2011 19:49:08 -0700 From: Bob Rentfro azbob...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] Mileage and windage Message-ID: BANLkTin2Y6L3Z0gKO=EDMN01LxKC=rb...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Last year I made a trip to LA. [MBZ] Engine removal W115
I have done this on my w115 three times. Piece of cake. I pulled engine and tranny together, used a cherry picker engine crane, and a poly strap around the engine, attached just behind the front oil sump. The weight of the engine and tranny tilts the engine at the exact angle that allows clearance for the firewall, front subframe, and radiator bracket. Pure genius! Forget the load leveler, you don't need it. Once I had everything disconnected, I had that engine out and on the floor in less than ten minutes, working alone! I couldn't believe how easy it was! The biggest problem I had was, in my excitement, I knocked over my sealed coffee mug.. Twice! I used a scissor jack under the tranny to keep it from hitting the floor as I lifted it out. I am getting ready to do it again to my W115, after 12 years And I will do it the same way. I have heard many stories about what a nightmare job this is But I couldn't disagree more. I did it three different times (three engine removals, two engine installations) while swapping engines between two cars, and it was a piece of cake every time. If you need any help on this, email me. Happy to help.Check out the pic on my blog the Catch of the Day, taken the day I pulled the engine. On my '89 BMW 325iX, the control was a simple drop-down crank--half a turn one way popped up the rear of the roof, and a few turns the other way slid it back. On my '80 Saab 900, you grabbed a handle at the front of the roof, squeezed it together to unlatch it, and then pulled it to the rear, over your shoulder, much like the motion used to drop the top on a Miata---a wonderfully straightforward and quick operation. [MBZ] A Father's Letter
A tragedy occurred locally recently... I may have posted it here... in which a young man was crushed by his car while changing his oil. I posted it as a cautionary safety public service message in several BMW and Mercedes forums. Unbeknownst to me, word of my post apparently reached the family of the young man, and last night his father responded to my post. it is a heart-breaking story, but worth reading, and I offer it in its entirety, including my response to him. Stay safe out there, fellas. I am Christian Klorczyk's father Good Day, I feel that I must respond to this post for the sake of accuracy, the honor of my son and family name and also to attempt to save other lives. Lynne and I are the parents of three sons, Frederick III, Christian, Parker and our adopted sons, his twin brother Jordan, Dimitri and Dan - all carguys. As stated in the article The 21-year-old died Friday after a BMW he was working on collapsed on him in the family garage. Fred Klorczyk said that a floor jack likely failed while his son (Christian) was under the car changing the oil. Jeff Johnson did a great job on the article on our son, brother and friend and I thank him for that. Jeff was a true gentleman who talked to us for hours in our darkest times to get an accurate depiction of our son and family. However, and unfortunately we do not have it on tape, nor is Jeff a gearhead and doesn't really understand jacks, jackstands and multiple layers of safety. I never said, nor is it accurate to say that a floor jack likely failed... Christian is an experienced mechanic who started working on cars and following Formula 1 when he was a small child. He and our whole family witnessed Ayrton Magic Senna die at Tamburello 15 years ago. Yes, Christian was only six at the time and he would wake all of us up at 6:30AM to watch the pre-race show in Italy on satellite. Christian is a true car guy as are his brothers and friends. My business is in the most safety conscious market in the world - nuclear boats, nuclear ships and nuclear power plants. That mentality is my life - has been since I was a kid engineer out of school. Ask any of my employees how I feel about safety. They have the right to stop any job and call me at anytime as no one is to ever get injured on our jobsites. This naturally carried over to my homelife. By the way, my father was a large machine mechanic by trade and a gearhead by avocation. No one would use the wrong tools - we have them all and all are of quality. No one in my garage or driveway would ever go under a car with only a jack of any kind holding it up. The jack elevates the car, jackstands support at proper points while working underneath and the jack is removed to improve accessibility. Period. Block the wheels if necessary. Emergency brake on. Car in gear. A lift would be better but we just were not at that point in our lives yet. Christian had the right front tire off so that he could shine his double halogen lights on the work area and see clearly. He also had that tire/wheel under the right front rotor as an extra measure of safety as is a habit of ours when possible. He had four ton Craftsman jackstands in use. Two were just bought at Christmas when I sent him to buy a new jack since ours is getting to be five years old. Hydraulic cylinders and seals degrade over time. He didn't buy the jack since he felt what Sears, etc., had were junk so he bought more four ton stands but without safety pins. I did not realize there were redundant safety stands until... it was too late. Christian was using my father's creeper for the first time. He found the creeper when cleaning the garage over Christmas. When he applied torque to the ratchet handle to break the plug loose, he experienced the law of physics of equal and opposite reaction. As the plug broke loose, the creeper did also in a direction opposite to the torque vector Christian applied. Some part of Christian's body, some part of the creeper, the mallet beside him, something - we have no video, just supposition and theory... tripped the right front jackstand lever inadvertantly from the underside and a ton of the BMW E46 3 series xi crushed his chest and his right cheekbone. He never took, or could even attempt to take a second breath. Death was immediate and painless. If I were beside him at the time this occurred I could have done nothing to save him. This has been verified by five friends of mine who are doctors. I used the floorjack Christian used to elevate the car to get the car off of him. It was parallel to the car just as he would place it when he removed it from the jackpoint. I had to engage the cylinder with clockwise rotation which tells me Christian removed it per proper procedure. I had the jack underneath and car off him in seconds. Jackstands were under before I crawled from under the valance while Lynne called 911. Lynne came under with me from

Re: [MBZ] Change of plans: restoring Marlene Diederich... a new blog
Message: 7 Date: Fri, 4 Mar 2011 16:48:22 -0800 Hi Kevin, Yes, that is a deliberate alternate spelling of 'Marlene Diederich'. As I explain in the blog: A word about the name: I have owned the car for 12 years now, and I have never been able to successfully arrive at a name that really fits. If I was going to choose a name, which I have never done for any of my cars, I wanted something Germanic, something meaningful, and something... catchy. My wife likes the car, so I wanted to include her in the selection... and I suggested Diederich, a family name. She thought the name should be feminine, which I couldn't argue with having come up with several male names that just didn't make it. So a feminine name... to be combined with the Diederich family name Hmmm. What about Marlene, my wife asked? BINGO! Marlene Diederich it is!! :) http://mercedesdieselrebuildingdiederich.blogspot.com/ In the case of my no-show buyer... I had arranged my afternoon to accomodate him... I had spoken to him around 10 am Saturday, arranging for a 2:30 pm appointment... 4 1/2 hours away. He doesn't show up, pissing me off. No phone call, nothing. Then, about 24 hours later, on Sunday, a truck with three strange guys arrives in my driveway around 2pm. I am thinking what the hell is this? Well, it's my no show buyer. I told him the appointment was yesterday and he missed it, and that the car was no longer for sale. He blamed the confusion on his 'new medication' I am thinking it was his 'self-medication'. The whole experience was just kinda creepy... and I was left with the feeling that he wasn't so much interested in buying the car as he was in 'casing the joint.Good grief, who needs that? That is a first for me. Please cut me some slack on this blog stuff, since it is all new to me, being a 20th---and sometimes a 19th--- Century guy. But, damn the torpedoes Full Steam Ahead! I like to leave a little something for the clean-up crew, Curt. Enjoy the coffee with my compliments! :) I had a feeling that you might be the guy that ended up with it. ;) And thank you for the invite back to ChowdahQ that is a fun little get together. You guys do a great job. It was indeed my intention after the stalwart performance back and forth to the ChowdahQ, losing oil profusely but never wavering or complaining, to give the 300D a new lease on life. I quite frankly have mixed feelings about parting with it. It only left me stranded once in more than 10 years, and that was only 200 yards from my house. so it doesn't really even count. AND, truth be told, it was really my own fault temp was 5 below zero, and I had forgotten to put the diesel treatment in that season... day um so the fuel line froze up on my way to work. I walked back to the house and took a different car to work. I was inconvenienced for all of about 10 minutes, maximum. I had AAA bring it to my mechanic, who simply let it thaw out, tinkered a bit, and it was good to go. Minimal cost. Sniff. Stop it now! You are gonna make me have second thoughts about this, dammit. How can I part with it?? Plus, I still have to break the news to my son, Brian, who loves this car. :) But, alas, life intervenes. Reality, despite my best efforts to resist, crashes in. Eight cars are too many for my one car garage. Even if I stack them. :) I really need a back lot like Kaleb's. :) Until that day... I need to trim back to a 1989 325ix (AWD winter sled), a 1982 323i Euro Baur TC (targa cabriolet, one of 4595 ever made, of which there are perhaps 500 left world-wide), and the 1977 white 320i that I drove in the Drag Race video. I plan to transplant the 6 cylinder 5 speed drive train from my other Euro 323i (rust bucket) into the rust free white Bimmer (presently 4 cylinder) at some future point, and use it as a (1) back up car, (2) fun car, and (3) track car. My E30 convertible will be sold. After some cannibalization, I will part out/scrap whatever is left of the 1978 320i parts car, and the 1979 323i Euro. And Mitch, I have no doubt that the 300D could make the trek to Arizona, provided one brings along a sufficient quantity of oil. The oil leak is fixed, but it does burn er, consume rather a fair amount. Lemme see, about 2000 miles @ 1 qt/100 miles about 20 qts should do it. Give or take 100. But there is no quit in this car. Fly in and drive it ... wherever. Um, necessary disclaimer here sold 'as is'. :) Boxes of spare parts from my 1976 300D included. Oh, and a spare block and head. And grille. [MBZ] Downsizing the fleet
OK. I have come to the reluctant conclusion that I need to downsize the car fleet. Six BMWs will be reduced/combined into 3, and the 1975 300D needs a new owner. C'est la vie. The 300D runs and drives now, but it will need some work, probably rings and valves. It has been a great performer for me for over 10 years, and I do love the car, but it is time to move on. Priced to win the Cheapest Jalopy Award at the next ChowdahQ. :) Contact me off list if you have any interest. If no interest in a week, I will be donating the car to my program, where it may have a new life as a learning lab. Hi Kaleb, On my 1975 W115 300D, there is a small (black stiff plastic, maybe 1/4 diameter) line running from the rear side of the vacuum pump to the side of the Injection Pump, attached with banjo bolts at either end. It is about a foot long. Now that I think about it, I am not sure of its intended function (vacuum line? oil lubrication line?)... but what I DO know, after 35 years, is that there is a river of oil running through it, apparently. :) I have no automatic vacuum shut-off as anyone at the ChowdahQ can vouch for I open the hood and manually shut it down. Driving along in the 1975 W115 300D at about 65 mph on Interstate 95, I happened to glance at my oil pressure gauge (which I frequently do, of course) to see it down to between 15 and 30, (YIKES!) where it is normally pegged at 45 while at speed. Lordy. My first thought was of poor Angie Raymond when she lost the oil cooler line and toasted the engine. Not a happy thought especially since I was 50 miles from home, and still about 10-15 miles from ChowdahQ! Since the needle was steady at about 25 or so, I decided to make a run for it. I looked for the next exit (about 3 miles) and then found a gas station. Looking underneath only confirmed my fears there appeared to be a steady drip with engine off, and a steady STREAM with the engine running. Day um. It appeared to originate somewhere near the front driver's side of the engine, (oil filter assembly, dipstick, who knows) but I couldn't see the source. I doubted that it could be the oil filter, since I knew that hadn't been touched since BEFORE the PREVIOUS ChowdahQ!! :) I threw in 3 quarts from my trunk, bought another qt from the station ($4.99!!) and got directions to the nearest auto store which turned out to be Advance Auto Parts about 5 miles away. I left a little puddle for them at the gas station, and another at Advance. I bought two gallons of oil, and headed out via backroads for ChowdahQ. It was now ChowdahQ or Bust! :) I figured that since I used about 3 qts in 50 miles, I could make it to the picnic, and with two gallons in reserve, I could make it home again. No problem. :) So I arrived at ChowdahQ, had a grand time with all the guys and gals, and then headed out about 3:30pm for home where I had company arriving at 5pm and I was scheduled to do the cooking/ grilling. I envisioned myself arriving home, making a grand entrance aboard an AAA flatbed to a house full of hungry guests!! :) Damn the torpedoes, Full Steam ahead! So I took mostly back roads thru Rhode Island--- a very pretty drive, btw, although I can't say I was in the frame of mind to fully appreciate it at that point, with one eye on the oil pressure gauge the entire time! I also did about 35-40 miles on I-95. I actually arrived home at 4:50pm without stopping and without incident, before any guests arrived, making sure to park the Mercedes where it wouldn't do any damage to my freshly coated new driveway. and quite non-chalantly got right down to the business of preparing dinner. No sweat. I didn't even want to look at the oil dipstick. Damn that is a great car. Well, I didn't get a chance to even look at it for a week. (I have other cars.) I finally got it up in the air a bit, no leak unless it is running. OK, it's a pressure thing. Started it up, and sure enough, a gusher pouring onto the floor. Good Grief, Charley Brown! :) Tracking the leak to its source was no easy task, since I had to get under it and look up into a a steady stream of oil on my face/glasses etc. ... and down to the ground came a-bubbling crude,... oil that is, ...Texas Tea! :) I finally found the problem: a line running from the injection pump to the vacuum pump with a banjo bolt and copper sealing washers. It appears that the copper washer(s) was blown at the vacuum pump end, and oil was just pouring out. I shut it down and tried torqueing it a bit more no dice. That actually made it a little worse. I then tried to locate the washers at several local auto shops/ Autozone/hardware stores. Naturally, no one had anything that small... these are tiny, btw. So I ordered them from the local dealer, Carriage House Mercedes

[MBZ] Old Geezer Discovers Oil Geyser enroute to ChowdahQ :)
Hi Kaleb, No. The rear side of the vacuum pump means the side of the vacuum pump, toward the rear of the unit. It does NOT attach to the block at all. The other end attaches to the side of the injection pump. So the line goes from the vacuum pump to the injection pump, and nowhere else. Please see Peter Frederick's comments below. [MBZ] Oil Geyser discovered enroute to ChowdahQ
Hi, ChowdahQ attendees may recall that my arrival at the picnic was delayed until close to 1pm because I 'sprung an oil leak' enroute. I envisioned myself arriving home, making a grand entrance aboard an AAA flatbed to a house full of hungry guests!!:) Damn the torpedoes, Full Steam ahead! Started it up, and sure enough, a gusher pouring onto the floor.Good Grief, Charley Brown! So I ordered them from the local dealer, Carriage House Mercedes. In the meantime, I re-annealed the old washers, thinking I would reuse them if worse came to worst. I went to pick up the new washers yesterday. . there was a screwup somehow. Carriage House ordered the wrong ones, but, they found the RIGHT ones in stock on the shelf. (That was Grant, btw,... I believe Dwight knows him also.) So I finally got the chance to install them after work today and PERFECT! Problem solved. Took it out for test run.No leak. Hooray! So, after all that, blowing out 6 quarts in 120 miles, a harrowing, nerve-wracking drive worrying about blowing the engine and making it home.. the problem is fixed for a total cost of: $3.39. That is NOT a misprint God, I love that car! :) How can I possibly think about getting rid of it, after a performance like that! It really doesn't want to die! I am reminded of the famous quote from Genl. George Patton, upon hearing the response of the Commander of the 101st Airborne, trapped in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, to the German demand for surrender: Nuts he reportedly said. Patton said, A man that eloquent

Many of you may know that my wife and I have been trying to have a baby for a few years. We went through a lot of fertility treatments and nothing worked. We decided a several months ago that we would like to adopt. We have been working with two agencies and two lawyers. Friday night we received a call about a possible adoption situation. That's the word they use. By Sunday, the agency called us about talking to the birthmother. On Monday night we had our first conference call with her. She is 20 years old and is 20 weeks along with a baby boy! We talked to her and got to know her a little. She decided as soon as she found out she was pregnant that she wanted to find a family to adopt the baby. After the conference call, the agency called us to say that she loved us, but she wanted to check the profile of one more family. (Of course, I suggested that the agency send her a profile from someone like the Mansons :) ). We thought we would hear back today on her decision. The agency sent her pictures of us today and she called to tell them that she picked us! So, we are now matched. The agency said they thought the pictures we sent made all the difference. We are a very handsome couple, so I guess that did the trick. :) I guess you could say, we are expecting. The due date is January 6th (The Epiphany), but she will likely have the baby early because younger mother's typically have them early and she had her first child early. Her first child is 18 months old and is happy and healthy. She has a clean bill of health for her and the baby. Her medical/mental history is good as is the father's. So, we are expecting and will be flying to bring home our little boy sometime around Christmas/New Years. We are very excited and even wanted to share the news with our Mercedes Friends! Donald H. Re: [MBZ] OT: nice story related to the car hobby
In Connecticut, property taxes are a whole separate thing... paid annually to the town where the vehicle is domiciled, based on the current book value. I think I paid $9.45 property tax on the Mercedes this year. Not too bad. :) The Early American plates are only two dollars more than regular plates for a 20 yr old car. Vanity plates are different... they are a one time purchase for an extra $90, either as a regular plate, or as an Early American. You still have to renew registration on the car every two years, as normal (about $40/yr for any car). Connecticut has NO car inspections presently (except for emergency vehicles, school buses, etc.). . and vehicles over 25 years old are exempt from emissions testing. All of this is supportive of keeping older cars on the road, in my view. For a new registration, they cost 2 dollars more than regular plates. Sounds like a vanity plate sort of thing. Here in Michigan, we get hosed for annual property tax built into the license fee, it works out to around $4 per $1000 of original MSRP on an old car, which adds up to quite a bit on a Benz made after the 1970s. For example, a $34,000 car like a 1986 2.3-16 is $134 if it's 3 years old or older, and $181 if it's brand new. An $80k W140 is $302 a year, does that sound reasonable for a $6,000 car? If we sign a statement that the vehicle will not be used for general transportation, we can get a $30 plate for a 25 year old car that's good for ten years, or we can use an old plate from the year the car was manufactured and register it forever for $35. I've got a dark blue plate that was issued to me in 1984 and replaced by a light blue plate a few years later, I'm hoping they accept that as a 1986 plate for the 16v. What I really want is a '79 plate for the 300SD, I wish my parents had kept their old plates. Re: [MBZ] OT: nice story related to the car hobby
Hi Mitch, Connecticut issues Early American plates for cars over 20 years old. For a new registration, they cost 2 dollars more than regular plates. As far as I know, Connecticut places no restrictions or limitations on the car's use. That may come from your insurance company, however, if you were to obtain a Collector Car rate. They place annual mileage limits, and may also require that the car be garage-kept, etc. I currently have two cars registered with Early American plates: the 1975 300D since 2000, and now a 1982 BMW 323i Baur (my current daily driver) since May 2010. I have also used the Mercedes as a daily driver off and on over the last 10 years. And, yes I DO wish someone would give us a 18' hauler! That turbo diesel could handle it, for sure. :) However, I have looked into buying one for the agency several times, but... that gets into a whole new level of complication and responsibility that I am not convinced that I can justify given the potential liability, headaches, etc. I have enough to worry about already. :) Sometimes it is simpler to just pay a hauler to have a donated car delivered to us. I have several haulers who are sympathetic to the cause, and give us a favorable rate. Re: [MBZ] OT: nice story related to the car hobby
Hi Max, Thank you. We are a non-profit, and not presently in a position to hire anyone for the voc ed piece. I would love to do that, but it is just not in our funding now. Maybe down the road a bit. So at this point we are seeking volunteer mentors, and we have gotten several responses, including a guy who builds and races cars. (An AC Cobra, and a '65 Mustang, among others.) We are also not far from the US Navy Sub Base, and we are hoping to connect with some folks there. We have had great experiences with Navy servicemen over the years. We also have to be careful how we implement programming so as to not run afoul of any DMV regulations regarding auto repair, sales, etc. As my son always reminds me... we are an automotive society... if you can teach a kid to work on a car, he will never starve. It is a life skill, a valuable qualification for employment, and it is transportable (no pun intended) wherever you live. And just a great recreational hobby, if nothing else. Since not ALL of the kids in our program will be going to Harvard or Yale (we do have one who graduated from Annapolis, btw!), this kind of vocational training could be crucial to their ultimate success. Have you thought about hiring a retired mechanic to teach some of the ASE basics? I used to work in a correctional facility, part of the education we offered was opportunity to 'wrench' under tutelage and then take ASE exams (prisoner's paid the exam fees). More than a few prisoners took advantage and immediately found work upon release. I was up in New Haven several months ago for work, I regret that I didn't know you were in the area or I would have tried to connect. -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of toms cat1 Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 2010 8:15 PM To: mercedes diesel Subject: [MBZ] OT: nice story related to the car hobby Just thought I would share the following, a little off-topic, related to what I do in real life, but it is inextricably connected to my life as a 'car guy'. Re: [MBZ] W114 300D climate controls
That is the exact A/C system that I have in my 1975 W115 300D, both the interior and under the hood. Yes, that is the compressor that you see in the lower left of the pic you mentioned. I can't remember the brand for sure, but I think it is a York. I have a spare from my recycled 1976 300D. RIP. Peter Frederick was spot on (as he usually is, btw) with his description of the A/C and heater set up on the W115... to call that climate control is... a stretch, implying a level of sophistication that is simply non-existent in the W115. :) I have never used the A/C on my car (that is what that monster sunroof is for, if you ask me) . it has never worked. Those red and blue control levers are standard, and the dial on the lower console with the green is the A/C control. Thereis also a fresh air vent lever, as Peter mentioned, in the middle of the upper unit. Those seats have been changed they are not original in any W115 I have seen. As you probably know, all the W115 300D s were automatic transmissions. What's with the knobs near the stereo and the sliders above in two separate groups---is that the factory A/C setup with separate blowers?? I am not particularly familiar with /8s, but I thought they came with either the Evil Chrysler ACC, or vertical-slider manual controls like a W123 240D. I love the jack-o'-lantern orange on this one---too bad the seats appear to have been changed out from a saddle interior to parchment. If it were a stick 240D rather than an automatic, though, I'd be all over it.? Wonder if everything works includes the heater blower? Aha.? So you can tell by the presence of that switch that A/C is fitted?? Obviously the best check would be to look for a compressor and so on under the hood, but I'm thinking about how to tell from sellers' pictures if there isn't a good one of the engine.? In the CL ad I originally posted, however, methinks in the pic of the engine I see a compressor at the bottom left---at least it has two thick lines coming off and one has a service port on it.? Is that one of the famously long-lived York compressors? http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/cto/1874125467.html Alex ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
