Here, continuing Ozark tradition demands that you have at least one non
functioning automobile on blocks and at least one non functioning major
appliance on the front porch.

Cars up on blocks in the front yard serve the essential function of
concealing the poop from the ten or so hunting dogs lounging on the
front porch...

And better than the non-functioning appliance, or perhaps its perfect
accompaniment, is an old bench seat from a pickup truck sitting on the
front porch, way classier than an old sofa

exactly. OK don cursed me. I just got a letter today from the planning
commission saying they have been notified of my residence running a
Mercedes Automibile Auction (whatever the hell that means). And that it
appears I am running an internet business when one looks on a search
engine. I would sure like to know what search engine. I looked and
cant find it anywhere. If they are talking about ebay, sounds like
somebody in the neighborhood has too much time on their hands and
searched ebay. Still no physicall address listed for my business.
How is selling stuff on ebay any different than people selling avon from
their home, or any number of other at home business activities? All of
my cars are screened from view, I dont have people coming and going
picking up parts, no big signs out front. Geez. I am going ahead and
getting a PO box to received payments for auctions and to use when I
file for my LLC and tax numbers etc which Im planning on doing pretty
soon. I have turned it over to my attorney as this is flat out
harrassment. They dont have a leg to stand on. No specifics, they are
being very vague.

they basically are saying Im running a commercial business in a
residential area. Well yes, that would be a violation except all my
business is internet related. The only thing that goes on here is i sit
at my computer to list items, and box for shipping said items which are
them picked up by fedex, mailman etc. Dont have any parting of cars
going on here. They are parted elsewhere actually. After this is
settled yes I will probably strip a car at a time in the garage or in
the back, out of view and out of mind but for now they are not. And to
be technical, there is no proof there even is a business, Im just an
enthusiast who sells extra parts from restoring other cars. The code
says cars undergoing restoration can be stored up to 3(maybe 2) years as
long as they are screened from view or in an enclosed building. All my
cars are screened from view and are undergoing restoration :) As I
said, i dont have a big sign out front, no business phone listed to this
address, no cars sitting around with for sale signs.

I live in a rural Michigan county. We've got county zoning ordinances.
For example, a motor vehicle must be licensed or stored indoors.
The local enforcement guy allows you one or two outdoors. He doesn't
go around looking for violations generally, 99% of his work is in
response to tips from the public. The land I'm on is zoned agricultural,
I could have 50 partially assembled tractors in the front yard if I
wanted. (a guy a few miles away came pretty close to that about ten
years ago, I don't know if he liked having all that junk in front of
his house or if he was trying to piss somebody off).

I will generally not buy land within the limits of an incorporated

was a recent judgement (within the past two or three years) that sought to
limit the ability for communities to enact CCRs against antennae, but there

I've only been here three years, so I don't know too much about it.

It will vary significantly upon where you live, even to who your neighbors
are. I'm in Los Alamos, a self-conscious little community in the mountains
in northern New Mexico. On my street, there are people who continually
park their cars on the street, so there is no problem that I'm now parking
my car on the street because our driveway replacement project isn't
finished. I vaguely recall some comment about non-working vehicles in the
county (there's no city of Los Alamos, only an incorporated county), but
never heard anything more.

In Austin, however, I had some neighbors who complained that I left our
(inoperative) car across from their driveway.

So, it all depends. There are a lot of smaller towns and rural area here
in New Mexico. What they are like could vary immensely. I would suspect
Albuquerque would be on the more-stringent side. Los Lunas, a few tens of
miles south of Albuquerque, is likely more relaxed.

Someone complained about the dead cars in the neighborhood (ther are a
lot of us slackers with cars we're working on - slowly). There is a
city ordinance that requires all un operating cars must be in an
enclosed structure. My garage was converted to a much needed room
many years ago, so I'm working in the drive.
They left me a notice (and mailed a certified letter) telling me to
remove the dead car by 1/17 or they will tow it away at my expense
UNLESS I worked something out with the code enforcement people.
So I calle dthem, ready to fight, and got this sweet sounding,
reasonable woman who seemed to understand my claim of slowly
rebuilding an old Mercedes, as funds allowed. We negotiated 3/31 as a
possible date. It either has to be running, or at least look like it
could by then. I get to cal back and either clear the deal up, or get
another extension.
At least my honey knows what my to-dos are for the next two months!

The more I think about it's not being able to burn biodiesel, and it's
16 mpg, and the price of fuel, the more I think it'll be up for sale
after I get the rebuilt engine in it. Driving it again might change my
mind, we'l have to see.

BT, WRONG. I have covenants. Im sort if in compliance. When we
first moved in here I only had my running cars here, no parts cars and
had a neighbor bitching to the planning commission. So I spent 5k and
put up the privacy fence and no more problems. That neighbor has since
moved out and many more cars have since moved in. We dont have an many
restrictions as alot of places but we do have a few. Not supposed to
store junk but says cars that are undergoing restoration are fine as
long as they are concealed in a enclosed space or behind a fence. All
my cars are undergoing restoration.

No. Because it is probably perfect and I can't get another one. We have
three cars already.

Guess what I found - that's right the owners manual for your car. I
will send it today. What is your address again?
