I joined in 1998 I think also... thats when I bought my first 240D.

Not long after that I met MMM and CTH in person on various adventures with
old Mercedes around NY, NJ, and PA. And went to the some Rusty Qs.

And yes, the lists were run by Dickarde in Canada around that time... not
sure when that started. But something about servers running in a hidden
closet in a basement parking garage on a stolen internet connection. And
then one day it all went dark and everyone lost everything... remember
that? He was hosting my website at the time. I changed to a professional
after that!

Re: [MBZ] OT: How long have you been here? Csn you remember?

2019-06-04 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I was one of the early list members in Richarde’s lists, the dates I don’t
recall, maybe the mid 1990s? An original Hitler list member, too, but not the
first to be banned. Before Richarde I was on the Vet’s list among others. I can
recall doing BBS stuff on Mercedes with a dial up modem

Richarde’s servers were run in a garage in Toronto, maybe Dan Stern’s place, I
don’t recall. They were ancient Sun systems that he kept band aiding to the
point where they were bailing wire and duct taped together. There was no AC in
the garage, of course, but there were fans. I don’t recall the details, whether
it was an extended power outage or equipment failure, but cooling was lost and
the machines pretty much melted down, taking the whole of mbz.org along with
all the other domains he hosted down.

I don’t think there was anyone around at the site at the time, and Richarde,
being limited in his transportation choices from his remote village, couldn’t
get there for several days.

This took down the lists, Rusty’s web site, and a bunch of others I can’t
recall.

Kaleb took over the lists and aggregated them into a few. This list is the
remains that rose from the ashes of the garage in “Tronna”.

There are some great back stories in this with Richarde swapping parts for
building and hosting Rusty’s web site among others...we should compile a book
or something.

move to Okieland and buy some land cheap with the flooding going on, put

~2002ish? Bought a 123.190 (1985 300TD, NA engine, five speed manual
trans, black leather interior) for $1200 at an auction, but it ran terribly
due to the EGR failed wide open. Something Marshall Booth said lead me to
block off the EGR, and it was like I had a new car. Sold it for $2300 a
couple years later when I couldn't take the lack of AC any longer.

That was on Sexton's list sponsored by Rusty. Dr. Marshall Booth, LT Don,
Rusty, Jabba, and many others whose names I have forgotten were there but
not here.

Met in person: Rich, Rusty, Jabba, Craig, guy in Ohio used to have a 1995

2019-06-04 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
yeah, I was on Kathy Kennel's list a while, but all the talk was about
new cars.  124 and 126 and such, so no value to me at the time.  Same
with hitler.  Then I found Alex's Mercedes Veterans list, and it was a
winner!

Bob Rentfro via Mercedes wrote on 6/4/19 12:08 AM:

Quite a while. I remember being on some thing back in the mid 90s that Kathy
seem to be running. Back in dialup days. Every day it was in digest form.My
memory is kind of sketchy though. I was a lurker on pretty much everyone of the
those old lists, I was very unsure of myself and was kind of in awe of all the
knowledge. I never really started popping up asking questions or participating
until Rusty’s list and then the Okie list.

Dang, I had completely forgotten about that!

I remember the first RustyQue. I had to room with a Richarde, and he was
smoking these gawdawful clove cigarettes. Ugh.

Riding around in a caravan going to the Benz knacker guy’s place (what was his
name? Dave?) watching Kaleb and Jabba get lost. Late nights with copious
amounts of adult beverages and the Choirboy singing Latin cantatas for us.

Damn, that was fun.

Wizbanned was also a major event and loads of fun, too. Kaleb remembers that
well, I’m sure. Lots of beer, brats and our private cheese tasting. Yum!

2019-06-04 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I had to bunk with Jaime, he had a blue 240D IIRC. We were driving to the Q
from the hotel and saw mountain man walking down the road. We picked him up.
Evidentially nobody remembered to give him a ride. Speaking of mountain man I
believe he was the 2nd list member I met. Met him at the MBCA star tech that
toad put on in Milwaukee. Ritter was there also which I had just been banned
from his list at that point and I made him uncomfortable.

What is this Lt wacko seat story?

Re: [MBZ] More flooding news

2019-06-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Back when I had mystery chest pain they only found it after a cardiac CAT
scan. A stress test shows valve problems or might show an abnormal heartbeat
but it won't show a blockage like a CAT scan will.
I had to fight with the insurance company, I told her "Tell me you'd prefer
that I die and I'll stop fighting." they approved the test the next day.

[MBZ] How long have I been here

2019-06-04 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
>
> Folks

I am about to turn 65 this year and maybe don’t remember everything

I suspect I bought my 1982 300td probably around 2000 or so

That was after 20 years of driving Peugeots

I do remember that my now 25 year old daughter and I attended a gathering north
of Atlanta when she was a young teenager and met many of you She now lives in
the Bay Area and drives a Tesla model 3 which she prefers over her husbands
model S Tesla She DID drive an 84 300d turbo sedan for about 5 years and
never dinged it. It is rotting in Athens with a leaky transmission shifter rod
on the side of the tranny case. I am living on Tybee Island all the time sans
my divorcing wife

This group has been good

And I have a mess of diesel 123 cars that some of you need to buy

Hey Rick - glad to hear from you. I remember meeting you and your daughter
at a Rusty Q in Atlanta, I think you were driving a tan 123 wagon pulling a
trailer.

[MBZ] OT: Server costs

2019-06-04 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
I have gotten in some early results from the Kill-A-Watt regarding my new-to-me
2014 Mac Mini web server.
Running this web server should cost around 40kWH/year, or about $2.15/year.
This is an order of magnitude
less than I spend just registering the formicapeak.com domain, and another
order of magnitude less than what
my @#$%! ISP would charge to allow incoming web connections, if I had caved to
their extortion! (Thank you
TC for the tunnel.)

This Mac Mini is drawing something like 10% of the power of the G4 server it
replaced, which itself was remarkably
low for the class of machine it was. The Mini is also effectively silent,
which is what prompted the change in
the first place.

With me, it was the opposite, at least my second stress test, the one I call
the stressless test.

Had some odd chest pains, got sent to a Cardiologist, who ordered a stress
test. It wasn't too bad to go through, just some hard exercise on the
treadmill, but he said he thought he saw signs of heart damage in the results.
My GP thought the ECG looked clean. They ordered a stress test with contrast
(stress test, radioactive dye, chest scan). During the 5 months between the two
stress tests I walked a mile or two a day but was afraid to do any real
exercise.

During the second stress test, I was just getting warmed up when the nurse said
I was done because I was at the same stress level as the original test. No, I'm
not. Look at my heart rate, I'm exercising at a conversational level, talking
normally. Back in March my heart rate was much higher and I was gasping too
hard to talk. (I was that much more fit after five months of walking 20-40
minutes a day). She told me I didn't know what I was talking about and shut
down the treadmill.

Ah, Tronna. Steve McSween did some duct tape of servers for Dickarde?
Dickarde had custody issues? vrx.net had some fascinating stuff.
The alternate dns server stuff was interesting wherein sites such as
atlantic.ocean could be viewed and the main internet origins fiasco in
DC with Vince Cerf was nice scuttlebutt.

When I thought I was having chest pain a while back they did a stress test, no
die. It came back as having an issue. They then did a cath which came back as
no blockage at all. Now I don’t do any major exercise except for walking
dealers lots and my diet was not spectacular I found it hard to believe there
was no blockage. No explanation was ever found for my issue. I guess it was all
in my head or something.

And just rotting vegetation if it is warm there. I was at my son's house
last week and he had a partial bag of lawn mower clippings in the garage
that smelled terrible. I tossed it outside. He was concerned that the
paper yard waste bag would fall apart if it was rained on but I was more
concerned that composting grass gets hot and could cause a fire. Not
sure there is any real risk of that but better safe than sorry.

2019-06-04 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
Probably the same bunch with ocean going barges are dragging things to the
islands as well as the great white north. I am afeared of learning how much
gold nuggets I will need to procure to get the SL north so that I might enjoy
summer driving.

Based on the weather reports coming out of ANC, the car is better off being
driven around PNW this summer and many to come.

[MBZ] Stacked

2019-06-04 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Searched the group, couldn't find...what advantage is there to cutting the
exhaust system and putting it out the hood or the side of the car ?

Opening up exhaust allows the turbos to spool slightlu faster

Bradley Rath you have to cut a hole in the hood and the car gets louder. Its
not harmful. On the stock turbo it wont help much other than allow you to hear
the turbo more. If you run a bigger turbo itl allow it to spool faster and make
slightly better power

Did a 3inch dump in the middle of the passenger side door. Less egt more sound,
I like it, but my car is not pure...

I was on the fence about whether not to hood stack my Gambler but with all the
judgement here, it’s clear the world needs more hoods with holes.
