Aurelian?  Can I fix this? Or do I need a reinstall somehow?

Yes the problem is that my testing ISO included zstd support in
illumos-gate and Michal added it afterwards in userland.

Given that, what's the best way to shuffle it so a pkg update will work?

I still have your testing images from November, so I can revert back

The correct one would be

It seems to be a relic from the non-standard install (2018.99.0 has been

Aurélien,

do you remember which (ACPI?) patches was that? I thought they were

https://www.illumos.org/issues/9822
https://www.illumos.org/issues/9823
https://www.illumos.org/issues/9824

and those were all merged early January 2019, so they are in 2019.04
snapshot.

But if I understood that correctly, Carl is still unable to boot latest

I am afraid this is expected as the ACPI changes you need were not

You will probably see package that cannot be updated (and thus prohibit
the installation of entire and userland-incorporation). Maybe you can
find the real original culprit within these.

Yep!  All for a compression library, it seems.

Not zstd but pkg://userland/system/extended-system-utilities is your
problem. See the "userland" publisher in the FMRI?

Disable the userland publisher and retry.

Suggestions? I would just install off the Hipster release USB and start
from scratch, but for the life of me, I cannot get it to boot past a
grub prompt.
I am afraid this is expected as the ACPI changes you need were not
merged to illumos yet.

Yes that was a mistake from my side I was confusing the
install-incorporation with metapackages/gui-install which installs the

Interesting, so the install-incorporation holds back the update.
From its description it fixates all packages belonging to installation

Do you have by any chance other publishers configured?
What gives

I did have, previously, this is an interesting build, it's originally
from a test build done in November by Aurelian, which was to get around
some issues with installing on modern motherboards.

root@testy:~# pkg publisher

But that's not what it was. I will see if I can find it... in the mean
time, I don't mind trying to do a clean install of the 201904 release
again, if I can get it to boot up.

the fact is when I get going, if I don't keep adequate notes, I have never had
any idea how I did something two weeks ago.

Probably not important at all.  What you're doing is working and I'm not
suggesting you change anything.

I just wanted it to be clear to people new to OI that if they're running
a recent kernel, they will likely have better results with the
system/virtualbox pkg than they will with the VirtualBox package
downloaded from Oracle.

I run 5.2.12 on 2017.10 without significant problems.

While what Reg is saying is true, there are some really important caveats
that people new to OI need to be aware of.

Versions of OI like Reg is talking about pre-date the fixes for Spectre,
Meltdown, and other speculative execution issues. When fixes for those
issues landed in OI, they effectively broke the Oracle-compiled VirtualBox
package. Installing the Oracle binary package on modern OI is fairly
likely to eventually cause a host crash. See the thread that starts with [1].

If you're running OI with a kernel from the last year and you want
Virtualbox, you should be using the OI package, which is installable
directly from the openindiana.org repo with 'pkg'. That package works
with the post-Spectre/Meltdown kernel. See Alexander's original
announcement in this thread [2]. The version of VirtualBox that's now
current in OI is 6.0.8 [3]:

I use that package daily from OI, with very good results. Audio works,
shared folders work, shared clipboard works. The only feature I miss from
the old builds is USB passthrough, but I haven't missed it enough yet
to spend time debugging it.

I run 5.2.12 on 2017.10 without significant problems. USB and CDROM access is
unreliable, so I use images on disk. It's a bit of a nuisance, but it lets me
use the scanner in the Brother 3 in 1 without a lot of hassle and I can run
various fairly lightweight electronic design programs which are Windows only.

For heavy stuff like the Xilinx Vivado FPGA tools I had to go back to using a
physical machine.

I had VBox crash 2019.04 when I installed them for a friend a few weeks ago. I
did not pursue the matter as I was visiting from out of town and didn't have
time. VBox support is very Windows centric, so it's hard to find anyone there
that knows anything at all about OI.

I was favorably impressed by the Hipster install *except* for the stupid
business of expiring the root password that you just set the first time you
login as root. That resulted in the password being reset to something else
which I could not remember when I was asked on the phone a couple of days ago
when my friend called just as he was getting ready to drive from Denver to
Ontario.

When last I checked with the developers, the primary Unix development
platform for VirtualBox is Ubuntu. I'd be really surprised if Oracle was
trying to position Solaris, which is sold on high-margin hardware, for a
commodity deployment scenario like VDI hosting.

Solaris's pricing model and hardware constraint fairly effectively limit
it to the kind of fat trunk stuff around which the rest of Oracle's
business is based, which I think is a shame, as the kind of
general-purpose load you see from running on leaf nodes is what an OS
should be able to do. For Oracle, though, that lacks a bit too much in
the obvious cha-ching factor to have management take risks.

I'd say it's hard to tell the difference between the positioning and
sales model Oracle's given Solaris and what IBM does with AIX, and I
don't mean that to flatter either one. Both sell IT to equity analysts,
not customers, so nothing's interesting if it doesn't have an obvious
65% margin on it.

/rant

So what you are leaning towards is running Illumos as a guest is that right?

I'm leaning against using it as a guest for systems development. As
Milan's indicated elsewhere, people may be willing to pay what looks
like a VBox tax for more modest compile loads, where you don't have to
pay out in large lumps. I wouldn't want to deal with the order of
magnitude loss of speed to compile something like illumos or gcc with
it.

Cheers,
Bayard

he's referring to running OI in a VirtualBox VM for use as a build

Bayard's post wasn't 100% clear, but I understood he was referring to
someone having an OS that handles the hardware, and then running OI
inside of VirtualBox, VMware etc.

I haven't done any benchmarks so can't speak of performance, but I do
get occasional lockups of the OI instance running in VBox. Lockups of
other OSes I run in the same VBox setup are rare. While for what I do
it's not a deal-breaker, I can understand how if I wanted to use OI
