Re: [ozmidwifery] fenugreek
Hi Catherine Fenugreek has definitely been known for helping in the production of breastmilk. There are a few problems with it though, especially in women who are oestrogen dominant. In these women, too much fenugreek causes breasts too enlarge and in some cases it is very painful. There are other drawbacks, it has a curry scent and taste and if you have too much, you start to smell like the herb. It can also cause intestinal upset and nausea, plus due to being a uterine stimulant, it shouldn't be taken during pregnancy, which isn't usually a problem during lactation. A good formula for increasing breastmilk would be combining alfalfa, dill, fennel and fenugreek together. I'm not sure of the dose and amounts of each though. Hope this is useful. Cheers Kim Jo Watson wrote: Hi Catherine. I used it once or twice in the last 20 months. I think it's 2 capsules 3x per day, but I took one once and 6 hours later I had MELONS on my chest. Re: [ozmidwifery] Genuine???
This is genuine. My apologies though, while we were setting up the list, we tried to miss this stage and simply s*bscribe everyone to list without the authorisation. Unfortunately, that wasn't possible. In order to get the new list up and running I'd appreciate it you'd all click on the link (unless you no longer wish to be a member) and authorise the s*bscription. My apologies also for the strange way the list name appears, I'm working on having this changed, so it doesn't look fake. Let me know if you have any questions. Also, can you not start sending message to the list until tomorrow, the s*bscribe part of the setup is happening a lot quicker than expected and it would be great if we let everyone have a chance to authorise their s*bscription to the list before starting anything people won't want to miss. If you need to view any of the old list's messages, the archives will still be in the usual place. I'll starting posting more information on the use of the list and how to access the new archives or if you wish, change to a digest version of the list. Re: [ozmidwifery] emails not received
Hi everyone, I've gone through the list and found a number of emails that have bounced due to their length and due to them being sent as formatted text. I'll be going through them individually and responding to the senders so they know their emails have bounced but this is taking time due to the large number of bounces. The email list isn't able to deal with a lot of new technology which means that more emails than usual are bouncing. It's frustrating I know but please bear with us for the moment we are looking into new technology and a more reliable piece of software to run the mailing list. I hope to this up and running in January. If you have any questions or need some help, please don't hesitate to contact me directly. Please DON'T hit reply and send message to the list as I may miss them. Also, if I don't get back to you immediately, please be patient my work load rather large but I will get back to as soon as possible. I'm guessing this would be even less because it's quite likely I'm not receiving some of the replies to the original emails as well! They are not going into my spam folder. I really think this is now beyond 'gremlins' in the system. I often also will receive a reply to an original email many hours BEFORE I'll receive the original email. It has become difficult to become involved in an ongoing discussion when you don't know about half of what is being said. Re: [ozmidwifery] Does anyone need help ...
Hi all, Thank you both Kelly and Mike for your great informative posts. To put everyone's mind at ease, my spam issues aren't totally related to the ozmid list. The issues I have that actually do relate to the list is due to the fact that all spam sent to the list bounces and all the bounces end up in my ozmid mailbox. I can promise you that very little if any spam actually gets to you via the list. I continue to be available to anyone who needs assistance but can I ask that you email off the list. I don't always get a chance to read the postings and may miss your request. Warm regards Kim List Administrator At 18:57 20/11/2006, you wrote: There are several things you can do to limit spam. 1 Don't use the email address supplied by your ISP for anything but people you know and block everything else. The same goes for work email, just use it for work as your employer can quite legally read it ALL, unless you happen to be the boss ;0~ 2 Use a free email for group subscriptions so you can cancel it and get a new one if spam becomes overwhelming which it probably will eventually. 3 Use a second free email for any of those online things that require an email just in case they are a scam. Once again you can just ditch it and get a new one. 3 Don't use hotmail if you don't want spam. 4 Turn on spam filters provided by your email service, but make sure you check them occasionally as they sometimes block a genuine one and yes the odd rubbish will get thru, just click delete without opening the email. 5 Don't open junk emails at all and don't EVER click on a file or link in an email unless you know who it has come from. You can get a virus that way. I personally find gmail ( www.gmail.com) a good free email service with reliable spam protection, it has loads of storage and I love the fact that it groups all related emails together. This feature is fantastic for group emails as you can see all the replies to a topic grouped together. If anyone wants a gmail invite drop me a line. There are other free reliable email services too. rgds mike On 11/20/06, Kelly Zantey mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Spiders trawl the web looking for email addresses to spam constantly - you could have your email address anywhere, even by posting it here, it gets archived and listed online. [ozmidwifery] Inducing labour
Hi everyone, I'd like to turn the tables and take off my List Admin hat and you all for a little assistance. I have a friend at college who is due to give birth to her second child in mid April. She has had a very bad time with all day sickness for the entire pregnancy and is at a point where all she wants is to get it out and has almost got to the point of booking a caesarean. Her first child was born by caesarean, so this idea doesn't seem to phase her, although I do get a sense that she'd like to have a natural birth this time round. The catch is it has to come early. Can anyone offer any suggestions or way to naturally bring on labour, so that a caesarean can be avoided. I have asked some of my lecturers about homoeopathics and herbal remedies and they have made the following suggestions that help only after labour has started. Cauloph 200 hourly to initiate labour if contractions are weak. or herbal partus preparation 2.5ml of this taken every hour during labour: raspberry leaf cramp bark motherwort sqaw vine wild yam Jasmine essential oil to the temples to give strong contractions. Jasmine, Clary Sage and Lavender essential oils to the temples on for pain relief. I am still looking into this but would appreciate any help you can offer. Where I work it is done by the midwife at birth and by a paed prior to discharge unless the parents are unwilling to wait (paeds are often delayed by events in the special care nurseries etc.) In this case the parents are advised to visit their local doctor within the week to check not only the hips but also the heart as some congenital heart problems cannot be picked up before 4 or so days. If mothers go home early and choose not to have another check by LMO things can be missed even after two checks in hospital. Some hip problems are hard to pick up anyhow. If the baby presented as a frank breech, hip ultrasounds are organised by some paediatricians as a routine investigation- this is denounced by many as an unnecessary test; overservicing in fact. The most noticeable thing, often, is the extra skin fold on the affected leg which can often be seen when the baby is laying on her stomach. This is sometimes seen by the parents rather than any health care professional. I send my warmest best wishes for your little one, good luck. I am still in disbelief that this was not picked up when she was first born and my paediatrician agreed. To make things worse he told us that in Wollongong Hospital (where she was born) they used to have a paediatrician who did a routine check for DDH on all of the newborns and all were picked up. To cut costs the IAHS got rid of this service and according to my paed one or two children are now overlooked. What angers me is that even with treatment, because she is older, my daughter will face the possibiliity of having ongoing hip problems. If anyone has any info on this condition (stories you've heard etc) I would greatly appreciate it if you could get in touch with me. Also, what is the general procedure for the testing the hips and do you guys think a paediatric examination should be routine? [ozmidwifery] List Administration
Hi everyone, Lately I have been receiving a lot of bounced emails from list member for very much the same reason, so I thought this would be good time to mention a couple of the things that cause your emails to bounce and not reach the list. The main problem is that members are trying to copy their emails to everyone or at least a large list of people in their address books. It is important when sending messages to the list that you do not copy the emails to others at the same time, as this makes it hard, if not impossible for the list to process the email. The other reason for this it that it unnecessarily broadcasts individual email addresses to a large number of people, thus taking away an individuals privacy.' Bcc doesn't have the same sort of repercussion and is a much better way of copying people in on emails, although there is still the possibility of the email bouncing if you use this method when sending to the list. The second problem is yet another unfortunate one, and that is the use of H*LP, note I have used an * instead of the e, thus my email didn't bounce. There are special commands used by majordomo (mailing list software) that mean you can't use these words when sending messages to the list, h*lp is a major one and should not be used without the use of the *. The same goes for s*bscribe and uns*bscribe unless you are actually undertaking one of these tasks. Finally, the use of attachment. Unfortunately, the list doesn't process attachments particularly well almost all of these email will bounce. If you have any questions regarding my email, or any other mailing list issues please don't hesitate to contact me. [ozmidwifery] Ozmid list problems
Hi everyone, Firstly, my apologies to people who emailed me through list admin email address while the list was down. Unfortunately, it was a catch 22 situation, I didn't receive the messages because the list was down. So please don't think I was ignoring you. I've had a look at the list to see I can work out why some messages are being received two and three times and unfortunately, the reason isn't obvious, so I've contacted the right people to solve the problem and hopefully this will be done soon. Happy posting. [ozmidwifery] Non-member submission from Lyn Allison, Senator Senator.Allison@aph.gov.au
DUE TO THE SENATOR NOT BEING A MEMBER OF THE THIS MESSAGE IS FORWARD TO YOU ON HER BEHALF Date: Thu, 7 Oct 2004 22:11:21 -0700 Subject: RE: [ausbirthingcommunity] What the Pollies are offering Midwifery? We have indeed endorsed the Maternity Coalition's = National Maternity Action Plan. My colleague, Senator Ridgeway spoke at = the launch in Canberra, he put out a media release in support of that = plan and I also spoke in support of it at the rally in Melbourne a = couple of months ago. We have both put up successful motions in the = Senate in on the need for urgent action on midwifery. Senator Ridgeway has put out numerous press releases expressing the = view: If governments are serious about safer and more effective obstetric = care they should be offering similar lifelines to casual and contract = midwives - many of whom are still unable to gain any indemnity insurance = cover at all. He initiated an urgency debate in the Senate on midwifery and medical = indemnity insurance, made several speeches in the Senate debate on the = bill about the importance of midwifery and tried very hard to have = midwifery covered by the legislation. =20 I attach the two current Federal election platforms that are relevant - = Women's Health and Medicare - which express our commitment to [continue = our] work for midwifery: Women's health: * The choice for pregnant women to have publicly funded midwifery = services throughout pregnancy and childbirth, as available in New = Zealand * More research and better advice for women on the implications of = procedures and treatment such as caesarean section, hysterectomy and HRT Medicare: * Medicare item numbers for community-based nurse practitioner and = midwifery services and allied health clinicians for an agreed range of = conditions * Extending the government's medical indemnity insurance cover to = include private midwife practitioners With regard to preferences, we have issued a split ALP/Coalition ticket = in every HoR seat in the country, as is often our practice, and we = encourage our voters to make their own minds up about who they want in = government. In the Senate we do a similar split for above the line = voting. I wonder why you would think it relevant to mention our Senate = preference flow that, after going to at least 5 other candidates (it = varies from state to state) goes to the Family First party when you = admit that you do not know their position on midwifwery. I note that = you did not mention that Labor will preference Fred Nile ahead of the = Democrats. Nor did you point out that the Greens have in the past = benefited from the preferences of an Abolish Child Support candidate. =20 The Democrats do not agree with a number of the policies of the Family = First Party, just as we disagree with at least some policies of all = other parties, however, we have reached agreement with Family First to = jointly push for a Royal Commission into child abuse. We also agree = with them on the need to curb gambling and are like-minded on other = campaign issues such as the treatment of refugees, the environment, = overseas aid, etc. Our electoral system makes it necessary to vote for = all candidates in order of preference and as much as we might sometimes = like to, we cannot put them all last. =20 We have enjoyed working with the Maternity Coalition and would like to = do so again in the future. Lyn Allison has spelt out our record and our policies, but I want to = speak up for myself. For ten years I have been the sole MP in the South Australian parliament = pushing midwifery issues, attempting to amend legislation to recognise = the professionalism of midwives, pushing the Government to assist = independent midwives to obtain indemnity cover, asking questions about = midwives access to retraining, and this year introducing a Midwives Bill = into the parliament. [ozmidwifery] Natalie Dash
Hi everyone, As you all know there has been a problem with virus emails being sent to the list from an email account belonging to one of the list members. Unfortunately, someone has been fraudulently using this email account without Natalie's knowledge. Natalie and I have been corresponding to try and rectify the situation and after exhausting all other options, Natalie has very kindly agreed to change her email address and unsubscribe her current email account. That way we can stop this unknown person sending viruses. Unfortunately, there are some very clever people using the internet for all the wrong reasons and they are looking for ways to cause problems for people all the time. This highlights the need for everyone to be careful when accessing websites and providing their email addresses to unknown/ untrusted sources. It also highlights the need for all internet users to have virus software. It pays to be careful on all fronts. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or if you have any problems that I can assist you with. [ozmidwifery] List problems - from LISTADMIN
Hi everyone, As you are all now doubt aware the list is experiencing a few problems with multiple emails appearing on the list. I have a few theories as to why this is happening and I'm looking into them now. One of my theories is that someone has a virus that is sending back out (backfiring) multiple emails that are received by the recipient. Another theory is that someone has joined or hacked into the list in order to cause havoc. I have pinpointed an email address and am looking into it further at the moment. I hope to have this problem solved by the end of the day and would appreciate your patience. [ozmidwifery] Vitamin K
Hi everyone, I was hoping you wouldn't mind answering a question I have. I have been doing a bit of study over the past 18 months and two of my subjects are AnatPhys and Pathology. Recently, in class vitamin K injections became the topic of conversation and when asked whether midwives would administer the vitamin K shot or not my lecturer, who is also an anesthetist, advised of course they would, along with the heel prick test. Can you tell me, is this actually true. I'd love to hear your feedback. Re: [ozmidwifery] Vitamin K
Hi Sue, Thank you for such a detailed reply. You've given me a new insight into this issue. Thank you to others who have replied also. Regards Kim At 20:14 3/06/2004, you wrote: Hi Kim, A British friend of mine has just arrived back from time in the UK and says that the issue of Vit K and PKU is a non-issue in the area she works in (around Brighton) ie vitK is not offered after birth and the heelprick test is not talked about either. I've just done a lot of research on vit K and did come across a paper that suggested that the British College of Midwives were debating whether or not to continue giving vitamin K . I was not researching the heelprick test. I have discovered however that there is a vast range of regimes relating to vitamin K across the world and that the evidence supporting any one regime is pretty inconclusive - in that the new Konakion MM seems less effective than the old; the IM seems the most effective of all but has question marks re associations with childhood leukemias; very little research has been done relating to natural supplementation and vitamin K, the Dutch model is better than the oral regime offered here and consists of 1mg dose at birth followed by daily 25ug drops (of an oral K freely and cheaply available) given by the parents, the Danish do 2mg at birth followed by 1mg weekly, and in the USA there are natural drops made of alfalfa, nettle and green tea in a corn oil base which I imagine would be given to the mother as every drop is 2mg. (Research shows 5 mg per day to the mother effectively raises the newborn vit K plasma level - synthetic vitamin K that is, which is not as easily assimilated as natural vitamin K).This latter option is of course not sanctioned by the FDA. Lots of research about synthetically derived vitamin K and next to none about naturally derived sources. Is nature really that flawed, and what exactly do these very elevated levels we inject or give orally to our babies do to them? Another of those questions I believe akin to the vaccination debate. I guess the most unanswered question was how do you determine if a baby has died of vit K deficiency related to its diet or whether it has died of liver or malabsorption problems which effectively reduce the synthesisation of vitamin K to nothing. As Sara Wickham says in her book, 'some of thes cases of HDN (Haemorrhagic Disease of the Newborn) could not have been prevented by vitamin K in any form'. Most of the deaths in regard to vitamin K are in the late onset bracket and most of these babies have underlying liver or cholestatic disorders which are not obvious(ie no prolonged jaundice or bruising or obvious bleeding like all the texts say should occur). Interestingly too, most of the deaths occur in spring/summer (reasearch from Japan, Germany and England) and 2:1 males too, so is there an environmental and or genetic picture here as well?? Lots to think about eh?? Sue Hi everyone, I was hoping you wouldn't mind answering a question I have. Re: [ozmidwifery] Vitamin K
Thanks Jan, There is definitely more to this issue than I first thought. Regards Kim At 08:16 4/06/2004, you wrote: Hi Kim Healthy women having home births rarely opt for these injections to be given to their newborn. Once the parents have read all the available literature they can't see the sense in injecting their baby if it is not at risk of a bleeding disorder or contacting Hep B. I fear most women giving birth in hospital only hear the manufacturer's reasons for using their product accompanied by a staff attitude that makes parents feel neglectful if they don't agree to having the injections administered. Information about the benefits of mother's diet rich in Vit K and the importance of family hygeine in the home surroundings are rarely discussed when discussing haemorrhagic disease or Hepatitis B. Providing one-sided information is just another way of making the majority of women and their families dependent on medical science to ensure optimal health for all. I wouldn't want my baby having IMI injections while it is trying to make the transition to extrauterine life (unless of course I was in a bed next to a Hep B carrier or being cared for by staff with the same status. [ozmidwifery] Good News
Hi everyone, We have been working on the mailing list to solve the spam problem and also to make the list easier to use, hence all the test messages. The results of this work are: 1. Using the reply button automatically sends your messages to the list, not the person who originally sent the message. 2. We have added the name of the list, i.e. [ozmidwifery] to the subject line of the list messages. Hopefully this will assist you in sorting your emails. 3. We are experimenting with a solution to to stop spam messages reaching the list. This means the ozmidwifery-list email address no longer exists. We cannot guarantee that no spam will reach the list but this should greatly reduce it. Let me know if you have any queries regarding these changes. SPAM MESSAGE PROBLEM - Explanation
Hi everyone, You are all aware there has been a recent string of spam messages being sent to the list and I understand how frustrating this must be. This has happened because of a glitch in the mailing list software. As you all know the mailing list address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] and to send messages to the list you need to be a member, the problem we found is that if messages are sent to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] they go to the mailing list regardless of whether you are a member or not. We are currently working on a solution to this problem but it could take some time. In the meantime, the spam messages that are being sent to the list are fairly identifiable from the subject field of the message, as most of them are in a foreign language or refer to making money. My advice is don't open them, just delete them. In the cases of the foreign language emails opening the email is only going to offend as they contain porn and it is doubtful the other emails are going to help you in any way. Another way to combat this would be to create a filter that sends all mail from ozmidwifery-list to the trash can. I would ask you all to make sure that you don't use the ozmidwifery-list address so that anyone who chooses to filter messages don't filter the real messages into their trash cans. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need any assistance with this problem. LIST ADMIN: Mailing List Netiquette Please take the time to read it.
Hi all, This message is sent to the mailing list every now again, to remind everyone of the normal netiquette when using the list. Please take the time to read it. 1. Quote a little, not a lot When replying, only keep as much of the original message as is needed to make sense of your reply. Please don't quote the entire original message (including signature lines) when replying. Otherwise, the messages on the list become huge, and completely unreadable. A good rule of thumb: your message should make up at least 60% of the entire content of the email. 2. Don't cc OR bcc messages that are sent to the List = It is important when sending messages to the list that you do not copy the email to others at the same time, as this makes it hard, if not impossible, for the list to process the email. 3. Don't send attachments to the list = Quite simply, these don't work on the list at all. And even if they could get through: * They clog up everyone's inbox, regardless of whether they want to read the message or not. * It assumes everyone is using the same wordprocessor as you. * Some people are charged for their downloads. Instead, I would recommend directing people to a web page containing the information (if such a page exists), or offering to send the information directly to those people who want it. 4. Only send replies to the list When replying to a message you've read on the list, send a single reply directly to the [EMAIL PROTECTED] address. Please do not send a copy to the original author of the message, or anyone else. Otherwise, public posts will lead to private communications, which everyone else misses out on. 5. All messages should be plain text Please do not send formatted, styled, or HTML (web) based e-mails to the list. The members of the list use many different e-mail programs, and most of these will not understand formatted messages. This is particularly a problem with the proprietary messages created by Netscape Navigator mail, Internet Explorer mail, and all other Microsoft mail programs. All mail programs have an option for send messages as plain text, although it may be worded a little differently. To emphasise: what looks very pretty to you may be complete gibberish to everyone else ... 6. Use the same e-mail address == You must send your e-mails from the same address you joined with. If you use a different address, the mailing list will automatically reject the message. This is to prevent other people from spamming (sending junk advertising) to the list. 7. Avoid special words == The mailing list program has a number of special commands. If it finds these in messages sent to the list, it often redirects them to me. This is to prevent a lot of s*bscribe and uns*bscribe messages from accidentally reaching the list. The best way to ensure that your message reaches the list is to avoid these words. If you need to use them, put a * in the middle of the word. The major special words are: s*bscribe uns*bscribe h*lp j*in c*ncel 9. If you need help === If you need help with the list, please send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also, if you have any friends or colleagues who are having difficulty joining, get them to e-mail me at the address. LIST ADMIN: Mailing List Netiquette
Hi all, This message is sent to the mailing list every now again, to remind everyone of the normal netiquette when using the list. Please take the time to read it 1. FORWARDED BY LIST ADMIN FOR Senator.Eggleston@aph.gov.au
on medicare? Are midwives not the the GP's of childbirth? These questions are valid ones and ones that are repeatedely asked by those involved with independent midwives as either colleagues or clients. I am not having any more children, but I would be most upset to learn that the independent midwives had to cease their practices, and therefore their livelihoods, because of a rash decision by Guild Insurance that does not seem to based on logic or proven risk. It would be a tragedy if other families could not experience the same joy that my family and many others have already experienced due to the care and attention of an independent midwife. Suzanne Cooper Ph: (02) 4845 1040 PO Box 65 Gunning NSW 2581 FACT SHEET Birth is not an illness. Internationally accepted best practice standards for optimal maternity services promote care by a known midwife during pregnancy, birth, and early parenting. This is fundamental to the definition of a midwife: one who provides primary care for women throughout the pregnancy and birth, and who collaborates with other practitioners (such as obstetric specialists) when a woman requires specialist or secondary levels of care. * The focus of the midwife's care is the woman, as an individual. The wellbeing and safety of the woman and her baby are paramount, and data from Australian and international reporting support midwifery care as protecting the safety of the woman and child. * Australian women have very limited access to the optimal standard of care. This is due to many social and professional factors, including t he progressive medicalisation of pregnancy and birth over many years, together with the government funding monopoly that supports medical primary care and excludes most midwifery options of care. * A recent Australian Society of Independent Midwives (ASIM) survey of members revealed most of the membership was insured with Guild; two have been without insurance since their policies expired recently, and the rest will gradually become uninsured as their policies expire. A small proportion of ASIM midwives are insured with ANF (Australian Nursing Federation) Victoria and so far they are unaffected. There were five members who carried no professional insurance whatsoever. - Kim Hunter Step Two Designs Pty Ltd SGML, XML HTML Consultancy Illumination: an out-of-the-box Intranet solution http://www.steptwo.com.au/ [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- This mailing list is sponsored by ACE Graphics. FORWARDED BY LIST ADMIN FOR Alan (Senator) Senator.Eggleston@aph.gov.au
[This message has been forwarded to the list by List Admin] From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 20:41:45 -0700 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: BOUNCE [EMAIL PROTECTED]:Non-member submission from [Eggleston, Alan (Senator) [EMAIL PROTECTED]] I suggest that you read the other emails involved in this discussion rather than just the one circulated. My point is that the insurance industry decision is a reflection of the fact that public expectations of all medical outcome are now so high and so is the expectation of regulatory duty of care , that the insurance industry is simply reflecting that reality in their decision regarding insurance cover for midwives. Things have changed in the last 100 years (1701 was a typographical error .. I meant 1901 ) and as you would know there has been a revolution in Obstetrics since the 1960s . I am not doing anything more than pointing out that that the industry decision is understandable in terms of current Australian conditions with the enormously high damages now being awarded for adverse obstetric outcomes which the insurance industry has to bear.I also feel very strongly that the interests of the unborn child must be given full consideration and that no-one has the moral right to put the interests of the child at risk especially preventable risk . -Original Message- From: Johnston [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, 20 July 2001 6:38 AM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Cc: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'; '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'; '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'; '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: substandard service ANY SUGGESTION OF SUBSTANDARD SERVICE Senator Eggleston This is an outrageous claim (see your message below). Is it the position of the government that midwives provide a substandard service? That midwives attending births on their own responsibility are more likely to encounter complications and (implied) deaths and morbidity than if they are attended by people under the instruction of obstetricians? The position you have outlined is unsupportable. National and international evidence that is accepted as professional best practice supports the midwife as primary caregiver, with access to specialist services when required. I encourage you to speak with the bodies with responsibility for registering midwives to practice in Australia, and the Australian College of Midwives. Even the College representing obstetricians would, I believe, point out the unsupportable and damaging nature of your statement. Yours truly, Joy Johnston MIDWIFE 25 Eley Rd Blackburn South Vic 3130 Tel:03 9808 9614 Fax:03 9808 3611 M: 04111 90448 -Original Message- From: Eggleston, Alan (Senator) [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Sue Cooper' [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thursday, July 19, 2001 2:44 PM Subject: RE: Independent Midwives YOU SHOULD THANK THE LORD YOU DID NOT HAVE ANY COMPLICATIONS SUCH AS A SHOULDER DYSTOCIA OR A HAEMORAGE ... WOMEN HAVE REWPONSIBILITY TO THE UNBORN CHILD TO ENSURE THAT THE SERVICES OF MODERN MEDICAL SKILLS AND TECHNOLOGY ARE AVAILABLE IF NEEDED. THE INSURANCE PREMIUMS PAID BT DOCTORS ENGAGED IN OBSTETRICS ARE SO HIGH BECAUSE THE ELEMENT OF RISK IS SUCH THAT IF THERE IS ANY SUGGESTION OF SUBSTANDARD SERVICE COURTS WILL AWARD PUNITIVE DAMAGES. IF MIDWIVES WANT TO PRACTISE IN THE MODERN WORLD THEY SHOULD DO MEDICINE , BECOME DOCTORS AND TRAIN AS OBSTETRECIANS.
