RE: SoundCloud
Hi. I was asked to check this out from a user point of view and didn't find it accessible. I was asked on behalf of a charity project to play around with pre-uploaded music files and didn't find the free version much use. This guy wanted to upload audio files for the public to play such as info regarding government benefits etc. I'll paste my response to that guy below so you will see my experience. Walter. Hi Glyn. Firstly my apology; I was going through my deleted items, clearing them out when I came across your email. somehow it went straight to my deleted items rather than my in box. I would have replied sooner if I had seen it so sorry about that. OK. This is my initial input regarding the site. The music is displayed clearly and the play button is easy to find and activate but that is where the simplicity ends and the problems begin. Once you have activated the play button and the music plays, there is no way you can use the other play controls because the music drowns out the screen reader and as there is no keyboard short cut keys trying to use them is a hiding to nothing. You have to wait for a quiet passage in the audio before trying frantically to find a control but the quiet period never lasts long enough for you to find what you want. This is the free version and I noticed there is a Pro service but I guess you have to pay for that but there is no way of telling if the pro version is any more accessible than the free version and in any case, the people who would want to play any files you upload would use the free service. As I've said I've only looked at the site briefly and when I discovered getting to the play controls during playback was problematic I didn't go any further. As with WMP, if there were short cut keys such as Control+s for stop or Control+p for pause or control+m for mute or+control +r for rewind then it would be a good service to utilise. It might be you can map the keyboard and create these shortcuts but I'd need to look further into the site and I'll do that as soon as I can. Of course this initial summery is from a blind point of view. People with hearing loss or other disabilities but who have site, or even some partially sighted folk would be able to use it. Unfortunately though if you have no usable sight and in the absence of play controls accessibility then it wouldn't be of any use to them. Nonetheless you have to consider the majority of people who would use the facility and a minority group shouldn't be allowed to veto something because they are disenfranchised; you can please all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time but you will never please all of the people all of the time. This doesn't mean that solutions aren't sought to resolve the disenfranchisement and that might be by linking to another service. I will ask on the tech lists I'm on to see what can be done and will get back to you. OK, no matter, he's in jail for pedafilia anyway. If you take a large, very large piece of thick card, or even a large oblong of very thin plywood and holde it at each end and begin to bounce it, the middle portion will begin to flex and you will hear the sound it makes. Audio podcasting
Hi all. I'll try and make this request as simple as possible but it is about a subject I know nothing about so if I display some ignorance then I ask your tolerance. I'm involved with a government funded project that is based around helping disabled people to understand the services that are on offer to help them decide for themselves the level of independence they can handle and the level of help they need and how to get the funding to accomplish this. For those in the UK this deals with the SDss service (Self Directed Support Scotland). The guy in charge would like to provide audio recordings of varying aspects of this service but the problem is where to host them so they are accessible to all. He sent me a link to www.soundcloud.com to check it out for accessibility and when I played the music tracks that were there I as a blind person could not access the other play controls as the music drowned out the screen reader. These controls did not have any keyboard shortcuts so were impossible to hear until the music ended. This would be fine for those who can see a screen but not for those who can't. Does anybody know of a service, some host where these files can be posted and can be accessed by all and that the play controls can be accessed by keyboard commands? Free services would be preferred but at this point anything is of interest. If anyone can help with a place to place these audio podcasts then I'd be grateful for your help. Hi. Hmm, I don't know how to do that. I think my version must be a different version from Dennis's version as I can't find the options he mentions; i.e. In Presets there is no radio preset just an edit box and an import button and all that does is give me a list of two file types. I guess it is going to take a few weeks or more to play around withit. and if all else fails I can always set everything to default and start again. RE: Searching Records
Hi Roger. OK, it depends on how you have your folders and drives set up but if you have a particular drive you know the song is on then go to that drive and open it. Now do a control and E and you will be placed in an edit box. Type in the search term i.e. artist name or song name or album etc and then press enter. You should hear the progress in percentage terms and after the search is complete Shift tab twice to item view and your search results will be displayed. If you know the folder your song is in then just open that folder and do what is described above, your search term will be shorter as there will be less to search. RE: Bowers & Wilkins T7 review: The Bluetooth speaker worth waiting for - Pocket-lint
Hi. I read that revue and it could hardly be considered unbiased. The guy states from the outset he doesn't like B & W stuff so he is hardly likely to give a subjective revue. It's kinda like somebody saying they hate baked beans and then him being asked to taste and give an honest revue and an impartial comment on which brand of baked beans is best. At the end of the day if you are going to spend a lot of money then you should always audition the equipment first and do so on more than one occasion. The best option is to ask for a home audition because even in the audition room of the dealer, the acoustics will not be the same as your living room or bedroom. If the dealer is worth his salt he should have a demo model or should be able to get one from the manufacturer to let you listen to. I'm currently auditioning the B & W PV1 subwoofer. I've had it for nearly 2 weeks now and have given it a good run for it's money and like what i've heard and will buy one. If I had listened to it in the store it most likely would have been through different equipment and as I've said, different acoustics. For the most part, store auditioning is great for narrowing your options until you find something that might be to your taste then you could ask for a home audition. In the end, it doesn't matter how many revues you read, your ears are the best judge of what sounds good or bad to you. RE: The difference a subwoofer can make
Hi John. Yes, Arcam do a few dacs but the one I have is the R-Pack USB DAC. With the subwoofer I find that the USB interconnect is better if you use the Chord cable. Without the subwoofer things are a bit clinical but you get great imagery and clarity but as I said, a little too clinical. However with the addition of the sub that clinical characteristic is neutralised and you get the benefit of a solid bass line but also clarity at the top end. The Arcam R-Pack USB dac is their entry level model but is very good, especially when it comes to playing mp3 files. I've compared listening to a CD on a separate CD player with the MP3 file through the dac and there is very little difference. Unless you were doing an A/B test you wouldn't know which one is playing and even then, you might not detect the difference. The Subwoofer is great but the only drawback is setting the default level, that is digital with a touch screen but once set, it need not be touched again ever. It does have a "on the fly" volume in case you want some extra woomf on a particular track but once the sub is turned off and then turned back on, the "on the fly" volume control goes back to its neutral setting. I've been auditioning at home the B & W PV1d subwoofer. Most people will assume that subwoofers are all about bass and nothing else. Maybe I should describe my set up before going on. My Source is a custom built tower PC. I'm using an Arcam R-pack DAC with a Chord USB interconnect going from the PC to the Dac. The Phonos going from the Dac to the amplifier which is an Arcam Solo Neo are Chord Chameleon interconnects. My Speaker cable is also Chord cables and the Speakers are the B & W CM5s plus the B & W PV1D subwoofer. OK, Before installing the subwoofer the sound from my system was very good indeed but since the use of the PV1 there has been a profound difference. The CM5s are extremely effective despite being stand mount and their bass response is very good also. However, with the PV1 the sound has a completely different quality and the sound stage has changed out of all recognition. It is a very warm and solid sound and very large. Bass is deep but very well controlled. On Saturday evening I was sitting listening to a few tracks and was playing at a reasonably high level but it sounded powerful but not "loud." The thing though that really caught my attention was how wide and high the sound was, it filled the whole wall, in fact it appeared the sound was larger than the room I was in and in truth, although I have good spacial awareness I was unsure where the speakers were placed as the sound was very much forward of the speakers and had great depth. I could tell the vocalist was right in front of me but the drums were behind him and other instruments could be placed accurately. It is very hard to describe to others what I heard but for those of you who have or have had some site, it is kinda like sitting down in front of a 42 inch TV but when you turn it on, the picture looks like a 65 inch screen. The subwoofer has filled out a great more than just an improved bass line but the whole picture has been dramatically altered. When I listen to a radio drama it almost sounds as if the actors are giving me a private show and are acting out right in front of me. I've got to say, I'm mightily impressed with this sub and for those who can afford a good sub, I would heartily recommend it. There is one fly in the ointment though; The sub being digital has a number of settings one can adjust to suit your needs whether it be to match a different set of speakers, if it is for music listening or movie or gaming etc, these settings are not accessible to the blind. However when they are set they are fixed until you wish to change them and even if you turn off the sub and turn it back on, these settings remain. The off and on switch is also digital so you don't really know it is on or off, unless you can hear it but it automatically senses the lack of a signal and turns itself off. It also has an auto switch off facility which I have set to 30 minutes so when I go to bed and turn the amp off, if after 30 minutes i
RE: Another question about the Olympus DM5
Hi. Well, where do I begin. I think I'm very spoiled because I have a 20gig Creative Zen touch mp3 player. This player is magnificent when it comes to sound quality but I'm not able to use it because I can't find the Win7 drivers for the player so I can load it with music. I think it is designed for XP users only. Giving I can't use it I was hoping the DM5 would have good sound reproduction and although it is reasonable at a push, it doesn't compare to the Zen Touch. My disappointment was compounded when I compared it with my mobile phone player which is superior to the DM5 in sound quality. The DM5 spoken menus are inadequate. It tells you the track name but you get very little info of how many tracks you have on the player. For example if I decide to play music by selecting artist then it doesn't give me the number of tracks in any particular artists folder and also when I arrow up and down the list, the reaction time is very slow and that is with speeding up the voice guidance. I'm inclined to just use my mobile for music listening unless I can get a better player that will give me very high quality sound reproduction. Oh, nearly forgot, I have to increase the volume to nearly full to get a good level of volume, it seems the DM5 output signal is a low one. It would seem to me that the player is truly meant as a portable recorder and the music player function is an afterthought. This player has never really been used, I'm just getting to grips with it. I bought it a couple of years ago and it has lay in an equipment box ever since and not been touched but maybe I'll consider selling it. Hi folks. It also has an auto switch off facility which I have set to 30 minutes so when I go to bed and turn the amp off, if after 30 minutes it doesn't sense a signal it switches off and switches on again when you turn on the amp in the morning. There is a "on the fly" volume control but again, it is digital and not accessible but there is a work around. I'm so impressed that I will most likely buy a PV1 provided the dealer can get me a good price which he says he can but even if he couldn't, I'd still get one as I'm so truly impressed. I'm sitting here almost giggling at my confusion when I was listening, I heard sounds from about 3 or 4 feet to the left and right of where my speakers are placed but there is a cupboard on one side and a wall on the other and my brain was telling me, it isn't possible because there is a cupboard there and a wall over there, but my ears are saying, it doesn't matter, we are hearing it come from that location, a bit of most enjoyable confusion. I thought I would give you all the benefit of what I've experienced here Oh!! one final thought, it makes mp3 files sound so very good despite the compression. Another question about the Olympus DM5
Hi folks. Just a quick question about this voice recorder; in your experience, will the DM5 handle a 32gig micro SD card? The manual says I can use a 16gig but I'm wondering if it will see a 32gig card. Walter. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! RE: Olympus DM5 question
Hi. When I attach the AC plug I get no notification. I didn't try charging via the usb because if a problem occurs then I have another element to consider, is the fault with the player, the usb connection or my computer etc. The AC was the most straightforward so I've used that but it must be the default setting. When I'm more experienced I will try the usb and no doubt I'll get a notification confirming usb charging, will have to wait and see. Last night I thought; what the hell, and put it on charge again over night. I didn't do anything different as far as I know but in the morning I disconnected it from the mains and turned it on and this time didn't get the three beeps and the voice navigation was working. I won't do anything involved with it until Friday when I'll get sighted help and if the charging indicator shows full then I'll try exploring the player. In between now and then I'll try working through some of the manual and try and make sense of it. However though, it is working, so far anyway. I think though I'll buy a replacement battery just to be on the safe side as they aren't too expensive from Amazon. Then depending on your U S B settings, you must either select the a c adapter setting, or it will be selected by default. Then once you here that, you must press enter, it should then speak the promt: "press ok to start charging" and once you here that you must press the enter key strait away. You might not here any feedback at that point, but its very important you press enter at that stage and no other button, because that dialog will dismiss. What happened to you is that you plugged it in power, but you did perhaps not confirm the charging aspect. Then it run on power only. So then you took it out, and when it turn back on, it gave you free short beeps to confirm that the battery is stil flat. It did not charge and therefore it only work in the wall. RE: CDEx Question
Hi Roger. Well, they must have changed things. I said to launch CDEX and press F4 and then shift tab, I made a mistake, you have to control tab twice. When you press F4 you do land on the encoding tab but if you do a control and tab twice you should get there. I'm using version 1.51 and if I have a copy here I can send it. If I get a chance in the next few days I'll try and get hold of 1.70 and compare it with 1.51. Sorry if I confused you in my original reply. Hi. CDEX will rip to Wave or rip to MP3. It will convert from mp3 to wave and wave to mp3. It will also record and save as mp3 or Wave but it doesn't do Og files for any of that, I'm using 1.51. RE: Ripping With CDEX:IsIt No Longer Possible To Have Cdex Title Tracks?
Hi. Not all data base will contain the information you might need. I've just purchased the Porter Wagoner & Dolly Parton 6 disc box set. This was released on the 26th of May this year, I got it 2 weeks after the release. However when ripping the discs with CDEX or Express Rip I could get no track info and this was a Bear Family box set. I had to go on the web and find a track list and enter the info manually. It is rather strange because I have some very obscure CDs and the Data Base found that info without trouble. You might find it of interest that Express Rip gives you the option of two Data Bases and if one doesn't get the info, you can then try the other. Hi. there is but I don't have time to explain as I'm heading for bed. If you want instructions then let me know but basically you launch CDEX then pres F4 and have a look around, you will find a number of tabs for instructing the programme to connect to a data base and for selecting the quality of the rip. Hello. Surprised this doesn't seem to have been brought up already but the thread is long and there are loads of messages so I might have missed it. I am going to guess that the reason this no longer works is that the gracenet database is no longer available to the programme. I believe a license fee had to be paid to use the service in the first place, and while I could be wrong about that, the database did change ownership recently, and both Winamp and CDex no longer have access to it. WInamp is no longer being updated as I'm sure everyone knows, and I don't think much is being done with Cdex either. So it's likely that, unless another solution presents itself, you will just have to manually input your track information, or use a different programme. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! RE: Soundbars
Hi Tom. It is like most things in life, you get what you pay for. If a soundbar at $150 improves the sound quality from your TV then I guess it is worthit. each person must decide what they can afford and act accordingly. If you have your hi-fi in your living room where you have the TV then feeding the TV through the Hi-fi will greatly improve the sound quality. I think it should be noted here that Soundbars are designed to give a particular cinematic sound and in my opinion if it is for listening to music seriously then a good hi-fi is the better option. If though it is to use with your TV or DVD then a soundbar is a good investment. If you are going to spend a lot of money then you would be wise to audition the soundbar first by visiting a reputable dealer. There are soundbars to suit every pocket the sound quality will generally match the price. RE: Soundbars
Hi Dane. When I said the Soundbar is 7 to 8 inches deep I meant from back to front. The height from the table top is only around 2 inches. It comes with booster feet if your TV has a stand so it can sit over the TV stand but you don't need to use these booster feet. If the beginning of the screen at the bottom of the TV is more than a couple of inches from the top of the table then it will be OK. It can even sit on a shelf under the TV as it won't bother the sound quality. To let you know how it is set up; you are provided with a headset, just like a pair of headphones but without the ear cups. You place this over your head like a headphone band. This is connected by a wire, a very long wire, around 15 to 20 feet in length. When you plug it into the soundbar it tells you it is ready for the set up and explains what it wants you to do. When you are ready you press the up volume button and it begins. It asks you to sit in your 1st listening position. When you are there you are to press the up volume button. You then hear various frequency tones of differing sound levels and intensities being first emitted from the soundbar and then the subwoofer. This goes on for around 10 to 15 seconds. When it stops it then asks you to move to your second listening position and again to press the up volume button and the routine is repeated. You do this for 5 listening positions and when it is completed there is a pause for around 20 seconds while the onboard processor calibrates the internal speakers When it has completed the process it thanks you and lets you know you can disconnect the headset. When I did this my first listening position was in the position I would normally sit. The other 4 positions was at the four corners of the room and this gave such a wide sound stage. My living room is 27 feet in length and my listening position is more or less in the middle and the soundbar sitting flat on the table in front of the TV. It was baffling to hear sounds coming from 12 or 13 feet to my left or the same to my right. The sound of a car or a jet taking off across the soundstage was impressive as you heard it travel the length of the living room. The Headset obviously contained sound sensors or mics to allow the sound to be analysed. Would strongly recommend the SR1. WinEx DVD ripper
Hi folks. Although I'm in no hurry I intend getting a reasonable DVD ripper. I've tried in the past to use Magic DVD ripper but that isn't easy to use. Lots of DVD rippers are not accessible but while doing a search I came across WinEx DVD ripper. There is a free version and a platinum paid for version. I have downloaded the free version but haven't yet installed it because at this moment I have no DVDs to rip. I intend buying the 5 DVD disc series Cosmos and I will want to rip them to my hard drive. I would like to know before installing this WinEx DVD ripper if any of you have had experience of it. According to a web site I found, not connected to the WinEx web site, it is simple to use. The paid for version can defeat DRM but it seems not the free version but that doesn't matter because I don't think the discs I will buy are DRM protected. I really just want to know if the programme is as easy to use as has been stated. If you have used it or still use it could you please share your experience as it would be very helpful, thank you. Switch, Free and Paid
Hi. The paid for version of Switch gives you the opeertunity to convert between 24 different file types and If I remember around 250 files at one go. I usually use Gold Wave for my bulk convertions so haven't used Switch for a few years. The main times I've used Switch is when I wanted to convert MP4a or MP4b files which Gold Wave doesn't handle. With the free version the file types are limited. Help with Winamp Crossfader please.
Hi to all. Recently I have reinstalled Winamp and also the SQ crossfader plug in. I used this a couple of years ago or more and with reformating etc I never got around to reinstalling it but now I have. Thing is, I forgot what configuration I had on the crossfader plug in. Someone on this list kindly helped out but unfortunately the instructions he sent got lost a long time ago in a motherboard crash. I've done a little playing around but as I don't really know what I'm doing I don't know what is the best settings. I have found there is no save or OK button when I've adjusted the configuration of the plug in, only a close button. I thought when pressed this would save the new settings but it seems not because when I went back they were as they were when the plug in was installed. Anyhow if any of you use the crossfader and have any suggestions as to which is the optimum settings or the settings you use I would appreciate your input. Out of interest, I like a gentle, smooth transition between tracks. If any one can help then I thank you. Walter.
Arcam internet radio accessibility
Hi All. back in July all my electronic equipment including hi-fi, computers, radios, telephones, everything electronic! was fried when my home was struck by lightning. It took around 8 to 10 weeks to get the insurance thing sorted out and buy new equipment. I decided to take the opportunity and upgrade my stuff and I now play my PC through an Arcam Solo Neo mini system with Cord interconnects and cord speaker cable driving the B & W CM8 speakers. I have a higher end system down stairs in the lounge but for this room up here it is adequate, in fact very good. It has taken me until now to turn my attention to some of the facilities of the Arcam Solo Neo. This unit has FM radio, DAB radio, A CD player; this CD player is what it says it is, a CD player. It won't play MP3 discs but it has a USB port for a pen drive so it is unimportant that the CD player won't play mp3 discs. It has a power output of 75w per channel and has the ability to feed speaker systems in different parts of the house, if that is your thing. The bit that interested me the most is the internet radio so I set about finding out if a blind, a totally blind person can access it. Via the unit it's self the short answer is no as there is no verbal feedback and the menu system is too complicated to memorise so unfortunately I can't use the main unit for internet radio. The good thing though about it is when you do get into the radio stations you can use your up and down arrows to browse through the stations. However the positive thing is, although I can't access the internet radio via the Solo Neo, I can do so through the arcam internet radio web site. When up and running you can browse stations via location. If you choose this option then you can scroll down through countries which are put into continental blocks. So, if I scroll down to North America I have the choice of Mexico, The United States or Canada. I chose the United states. When in there the list is broken down into states and you are informed by each state how many internet stations are available in that state. For example; Tennessee had 63 stations but Virginia had 129. When you click on the state you want then the list gives the name of the station, what kind of station it is and location. When you click on play you are connected immediately. You can create categories for your favourite stations i.e. news, talk, music or sports etc. and these can be saved in your favourites section. Interestingly what you do on the website is also duplicated on the Arcam unit itself. So when on the website I've so far created two favourite categories; Talk and Country. Now if I could use the main unit I would find these options there also. The website is completely accessible but the Arcam Solo Neo is not. If you have an Arcam product such as the Neo then you have to get sighted help to register it buy inputting the unit number and creating an Arcam account but it is fun not having to search for internet stations on the web where things can be hit or miss. Here you have a list of stations you can connect to with ease. I hope this information is helpful. Walter. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Lin out/in discrepancy
Hi all. This is just a fishing exercise to see if anybody has experienced the same problem and if they found a solution. I have a custom built computer and I play my music on my external drives via the PCs line out and into the line in on my Arcam Solo Neo mini system. When I play a CD or use the DAB radio on this system the quality is good and I can play it at a high level. However when I switch the source to the input I use for my PC the volume level is much lower. If I boost the volume to the point I like it but for get to turn down the volume before I move to CD or DAB then I very near blow off my wig. I have all the volume sliders at max in the control panel but the volume is still too low. The only way I have been able to remedy this problem is to use a headphone amplifier and this helps raise the volume but not equalling the CD or DAB volume and I guess since these are integral to the system they are not using a line in source. The piece of kit I'm using is the Arcam R-Pack DAC and headphone amplifier. I tried the line level connection with good quality inter connects but this didn't increase the volume of my PC. I then switched to the headphone output which has volume controls and this helped a lot. Has anyone encountered this problem and if so, did you resolve it and how did you do this? Walter. Re: Powered Speakers for Editing Audio
Work with what? I have only had the control 2.4g speakers which are RF speakers, one is active with it's own amplifier and the other is passive. I haven't heard of the "On-Tour" speakers. I can only say that I am mightily impressed with the quality of JBL and when the day comes to replace my Mission 735 floor standing speakers, I will spend the necessary money to get a high end pair of JBL speakers as a replacement. The Control 2.4g speakers are a perfect match for working with my PC. Incidentally, they also have an input for line in so you don't have to use the RF feature and also it has an output for a sub woofer and I've linked up a 10 inch warfdale subwoofer to work with them but if they were to be used as monitors for editing then there is no need for a subwoofer. Re: JBL "Onbeat Air" speaker system
Hi. You won't be sorry about getting JBL. I have a pair of JBL active RF speakers and they are incredible. They are small but so powerful and the quality of sound is unbelievable. I use them with a Warfdale 9 inch sub-woofer and the resulting sound is wonderful and that is linking them to my PC. They also can be driven via line in but I use the RF option and it is surprising how good the sound quality is for such small speakers. In fact I have a high end Hi-Fi system in my living room but the combination in many ways matches and sometimes surpasses the highe end stuff. I'm sure you will enjoy your new purchases as the next time I buy new speakers it will most likely be JBL. Walter.-Original Message- From: Dane Trethowan Sent: Saturday, March 03, 2012 12:39 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: JBL "Onbeat Air" speaker system Hi! Just ordered one of these speaker systems, expecting it Monday so I should be able to give you all a good "wrap" of the device then. This system is "Airplay" compatible thus you can stream music or video from your Mac, Computer or IOS device to the system, also contains an aux-in jack and a USB port for those people who don't have "Airplay" devices. Has an iPhone/iPod/iPad compatible dock so you can connect the device directly if you so desire. You're looking at around $200.00 in the U.A. for one of these systems and that to me is a bargain. There is a JBL system above the "Onbeat Air" called the "Onbeat Stream", its a little more powerful and will also allow bluetooth streaming, had I known of the existence of this model then I probably would have bought it, ah well at, at least I can keep saving and its like the old story with the Altec Lansing Expressionist Plus and Expressionist Ultra speakers which worked themselves out in the end . I've never owned nor heard - consciously at any rate - a JBL speaker system before, I'm told I "Don't know what I'm missing"? We'll see come Monday. Hi. To compress a number of files, first select them, or it might be a folder as you can compress the folder with the files in it. Then go to your file menu and then arrow up until you find "Send To submenu." If you then arrow right, then arrow up, you will find an option calledCompressed zip, press enter here and the files you have selected will be compressed into a zip file. Help with Goldwave scripts, please
Hi folks. At present I am using Gold Wave V5.25. Things have moved on a pace since I got this version and I think it is time to upgrade. I understand that 5.58 is the latest version of Gold Wave but are there suitable scripts for JAWS available for this version? If so, where can I download them from? Equally as important, how do I install them? It has been a number of years now since I got help to install the scripts for the version I now have and I simply did what I was instructed but as it was new to me and I was very inexperienced, I was unable to retain the information. If some kind soul would be so kind and give me a step by step guide of where and how to install the right scripts for the latest version I would be very grateful. Of course, if the scripts are self instal then that solves a lot of problems but it still would be useful to know how to do it the long way. With many thanks and hope someone can help. Walter. Does anyone know of an accessible simple to use download manager?
Hi all. I have for a little while now been trying to find an accessible and simple to use download manager. There is one web site that I use a lot to purchase music downloads from. They have their own download manager but for some reason I am unable to download a complete copy of it and in any case, someone who uses another screen reader (super Nova) said that the programme interfered with his screen reader. I would imagine if I could get a proper copy I would have similar problems so their DLM is of no use. I told them this and they suggested Flashget but that was totally unfriendly and impossible to use. I did a search and tried"Free Download Manager." The blurb spoke of how simple it was to use and how straightforward the interface was. Well, I downloaded it and installed it and it didn't seem to conflict with my JAWS 10. However, it was impossible to understand how to use it. They explained but it still didn't make any sense. Even my sighted P.A. couldn't work out how to use the thing. Therefore, If anyone knows of a good DLM that is screen reader friendly and easy to use then would you please let me know. Failing any success in finding one, I'll just have to continue downloading track by track which is very soul destroying. With thanks. Walter. RE: burning a CD that has multipal folders of songs on it on to one disk
Hi. 1. it seems likely the tracks are mp3 but the way to check is to highlight a single track and check the properties of that track,it will tell you the file type. Alternatively check the extention to see if it is .mp3. or just ask your brother what format he burned the disc in. 2. If they are mp3 files then you wouldn't get 900 tracks on a 700mg disc, the max i've managed with reasonable bit rates is 175, so it is possible they are on a DVD disc. So if I wanted to make a copy of it I would just have to select to have my burning program burn an mp3 CD when burning this disk for my self or is this a different formatted disk and then do I have to select a different burning method? Hi Danny. CDEX creates a couple of folders in your My Documents/my Music. One of these folders is merely a data base folder but the other is named MP3. If you see that folder in your My music folder your recording should be in there. The other alternative is to Go to My Computer and focus on Local disc and do a search for your file, assuming you know the file name. If you find it, pay attention to the pathway. There was no time delay, as there is with Goldwave, in which the file appeared to be saving. RE: Goldwave Question About Batch Conversion and Errors
Hi. Yes there is. Firstly make sure your extensions are turned on otherwise this won't work. If they are turned on then go to the folder where you have your 7000 plus files but don't open it. Go to your application key and find the search option and then put in the edit box .AIFF and then either hit enter or tab to search. This will bring up all the .AIFF files in the folder. Select all and cut or copy the files and place them in a new folder or somewhere else where you can examine them. Hope this helps. Send Space and Drop Box
Hi. I hope tom the list owner doesn't mind this post since it isn't audio related unless the file sharing is audio related. I have a lot of experience with Send Space and think I can help. Firstly. Drop Box is quite popular but there are drawbacks. One I heard about on another list is if there are too many downloads of your file it tends to freeze and ceases working. I don't use Dropbox so I'm only going on what others who do say. As for Send Space? I use it all the time and I have a paid account. You can use Send Space for uploads and downloads freely but there are some drawbacks and some of them serious. With the free user option you can upload as many files as you please, it is unlimited but the max file size is 300mg. So you can upload as many files as you want in any 24 hour period without limit provided the file does not exceed 300mg. You can download freely also but you have a maximum download limit of 1gig in a 24 hour period. The new 1gig limit renews it's self at midnight U.S. East Coast time. If you use the free download option you will be faced with loads of adverts and if you click on any of these you risk getting infected. Many users of the free service have complained they get Trojans from these links. I have never had that experience when using the free service but enough have complained about it to suggest there must be something in it. However if you don't click on the links you should be fine. If you use the free service to upload files then once they have been uploaded, these files remain on the server for 7 days and then Send Space will delete them. There is one other account you can have witch is a compromise between free users and paid accounts and that is Send Space light. With this account you can upload and create folders in a similar way to a Max account holder but if you want to download then you download as a free user and you cannot use the Send Space wizard. Files that are stored using this account can be deleted by you but if you leave them and there is no downloads of a file with in 30 days then Send Space will delete it. OK, now for the paid accounts. There are two kinds Max and Pro. It really depends on whether you do a lot of downloading or uploading. As far as I am aware you can't have both accounts, it is either one or the other. I have a max account since I do a lot of downloading. With a max account I get an 8gig daily download limit which is really adequate. You can download up to that limit and get good download speeds compared to the free service, Depending on your connection speed. In my case I get up to 800 or 900kbs. If I use the Send Space wizard I get 1.5mg per second. You can also upload with the wizard and the upload with the wizard is much quicker than without it. You are still only allowed a max file size for upload of 300mg. With a max account you can leave your files on the Send Space server for as long as you want and can create folders and move files around. You can also set download limits either by number or by date and can if you wish password your files. Although Send Space claim the storage space is unlimited, it isn't. If you exceed 100gig then you will be notified you are breaching there fair use policy and if you don't delete files to bring your limit into line, they will. With the Pro account you pay for bandwidth. You can upload files as large as 1.5gig and have direct links for people to use and they don't have to work through adverts. This account in my opinion is only of benefit if you want to send very large files often and is probably most suited for commercial interests. With the Send Space light and the Max accounts you can gather max points for each download and once you gather 1 points you get a 1 month Max account free or you can gift it to someone else. Send Space is very accessible and there is no capchas to cause you trouble during registration nor downloading. I have a folder containing 100gig worth of music (2000albums. If you have never used Send Space and want to see how accessible it is then I'll give you the link to my folder and you can feel free to download as much as you wish. That link is: http://www.sendspace.com/folder/kb8qb1 . If you have any problems or questions then contact me off list only. My email address is w...@blueyonder.co.uk. RE: Minidisc File Formats
Hi Danny. CDEX is a small programme, can't remember the size but certainly much smaller than Gold Wave. It is in fact a CD ripper but it is able to convert files to and from WAVE and or MP3. It also has a Digital recorder included and it is very easy to use. I must admit I never really use it as I have and use Gold Wave. However CDEX is very screen reader friendly both for ripping discs and also for the converter and or audio recorder. Probably the majority of members on this list probably have it so can help out if you have trouble. As I said though it is easy to use and is intuitive. All you need remember is F4 is the key to use when you want to configure it once installed. The programme is free and if you do a google search you will find loads of sites offering the download. My version is an older version (1.51) and I'm not sure what version is the latest but I think it is around 1.70 or 1.71, something like that. As I said in my previous email, the recorder is basic, keystroke to start then keystroke to stop but no edit facility. You can save at whatever bit rate you choose. Bearing in mind it is a small programme and it isn't your computer then your friend won't complain about CDEX as they will probably appreciate it them self. Thanks for advising me again. No, I haven't thought of CDEX, as I've never used it and assumed that it was simply an alternative to Goldwave but with less features. One of the main issues with putting Goldwave on this computer is the lack of available space for programmes, but if CDEX is so basic I presume it takes up very little room. My stand alone CD recorder doesn't allow editing, so the lack of such a feature isn't really an issue. Can you please advise on where to find it and any tutorials, and whether it needs any additional Jaws scripts? RE: Minidisc File Formats
Hi Danny. If you are unable to use Gold Wave for recordings on that computer then have you tried using CDEX. This will record straight onto the hard drive or on to an external hard drive. Unfortunately though, it isn't an audio editor so when you start the recording then stop it, the resulting file can't be manipulated. You can though do so with Gold Wave if you transfer the saved file to another PC or lap top that has Gold Wave. RE: CD Recording and Maintenance
Hi Danny. Firstly Is there any reason why you can't record straight onto your PC hard drive or external drive? That would be your best option if you can do that. assuming you can't then Re-writable CDs have a very limited lifespan. You are very limited in how many times you can erase and record any single disc. I know from experience that they are very unreliable and bearing in mind they are kinda expensive they are not very economical in the long run. I'm trying to recall something I read about them many years ago but I can't fully remember. All I can recall was the problem lays with the dye's ability to react to the laser and over time it's response becomes ineffective and the disc becomes a piece of junk. I do have a few sealed audio re-writables but only use them if I have no other choice but since they have been in their sealed packs for a few years, I haven't been forced to use them. I found the worst combination was to record something on my Hi-Fi CD recorder, then take it to my PC and rip the contents and then erase it in the PC. A couple of times of that and the disc died. I found the best way to prolong the life of the disc as much as possible was if I recorded the disc in the audio CD recorder it was wise to erase it in there and if I burned the disc in the PC then, erase it there also. My preferred means of doing the sort of recordings you speak of is to record onto mini disc. They can be written on and erased a million times without deterioration of the audio quality. If you can get hold of a MD recorder with long play facility then you can get up to 5 hours 20 minute recording time from a single disc. Of course, the quality is slightly lowered compared to the stereo setting, probably similar to a PC file at 128kbs, but for the spoken word it is perfectly fine. Some portable Mini disc recorders can be connected to your PC via USB and you can transfer files freely. Also, Mini Disc has a reasonable, if only basic editing feature. Sadly, they are becoming quite hard to find though. The other option is one of the Olympic digital recorders but I have no experience of these and will have to leave it to others to explain whether such a device would suit your purposes. Finally, as for examining the disc it's self? That is something you would have to get a sighted person to do for you as there isn't a way of telling how badly scratched a disc is. In any case, not all scratches will adversely effect the playing of the disc. I have found some discs have had large, even deep scratches and played fine but a disc with extremely fine, almost impossible to see scratches just threw the player into a panic. It really depends where the scratch, or scratches are and how severely it interferes with the discs reflective capability. As a last resort, you might think about using unbranded write once discs, they are not very expensive. Sorry if this is rather random, but I hope that someone can help. I'm currently recording audio from the radio and old cassettes using a stand alone CD recorder. I'm using re-recordable discs so that I don't have to keep buying new ones, but they seem to pick up dust and scratches very easily, and the instructions for the recorder are accurate in warning that any discs used will only function properly if such issues are not present. Does anybody know how I can check whether a CD is scratched (bearing in mind that I'm totally blind, that scratches can rarely be felt on the surface of a CD and that touching the surface would most likely damage the disc anyway)? Also, does anyone know of a way in which I can safely ensure that any dust is removed from a disc without running the risk of scratching it? Finally, does anyone know whether re-recordable discs are naturally more temperamental than recordable ones, or is anyone able to name types/makes of re-recordable discs which aren't temperamental? At the moment I'm losing recordings because the machine stops recording and deletes what it's accumulated part of the way through a session, and this is getting both awkward and irritating. Apologies for all of the questions - any help will be appreciated. RE: cd album?
Hi. If it is an audio disc you have then just copying and pasting won't work, as you have found. I will assume you are using windows so the easiest way to do it is to rip with Windows Media Player. Once you have inserted the disc into your CD drive, wait a few moments, maybe 30 seconds for the drive to read and identify the disc. You should have a menu appear asking what you want to do; play the disc, rip the disc with Windows Media Player open the folder to view the files or do nothing etc. When you have that menu appear then arrow up and down until you find the option to Rip with Windows Media player and press enter. The rip process should begin at this point but if it doesn't then you will have to ALT tab to the player and either shift tab or tab until you get the option to "start rip." Once you see that option then press the space bar or enter and the process will begin and the disc will be ejected at the end of the rip. You will find your ripped disc in my documents/my music folder. I hope this helps and if you need more information then just ask. Hi Bruce. I think what you say will only allow an individual to decide what he prefers. There is no definitive answer as to what format is superior as it always depends on what sounds good to any individual's ears. As to the Technical debate, well one could argue over this until the cows come home. In the end it is all about the music and many years ago I discovered that I an my friends were listening to the equipment and not what was being played upon it and thus, we were never satisfied. Now I listen to the music and try to get as much clarity as possible but if I enjoy what I hear, it doesn't matter what it is played on. RE: High fidelty and turntables today
Hi. In short the answer is yes, you will always get superior quality reproduction from dedicated Hi-Fi equipment. There has been and still is a raging debate between the exponents of Vinyl and CD. For the most part this debate is purely subjective since it really depends on your preferred listening experience. Some people like a very forward stereo image while others prefer the sound stage to be more set back behind the speakers. I have a friend who prefers his sound to be more recessed as I think it gives him a feeling of being in a concert hall, he is a great classical music fan and attends lots of concerts. Others enjoy a bright sound and yet others like firm and prominent bass. Promoters of the Vinyl will say that the sound is much warmer while the supporters of CD will say that CD is much more detailed all be it more clinical. The only way to compare what one prefers is to go to a specialist, and any good specialist will always recommend you listen to the product before purchasing and often have listening rooms in order to let you have a choice of different combination of equipment. In truth, you really do get what you pay for. I remember when I purchased a system some years ago; I was amazed just how by changing one amplifier for another, changed the sound quality. Even changing something as basic as the interconnects made a huge difference. Although you can audition the equipment, it isn't the same as having it in your own home and if you have a good relationship with any particular dealer they may allow you to take the equipment home and listen to it in situ. So vinyl versus CD is something each person must decide for himself or herself but bear in mind, Vinyl isn't as readily available as CD and it might take a bit of work tracking down the stuff your son is interested in. It is always wise to purchase audio separates as these components are designed with their purpose in mind where as combination systems always have some compromise whether it be the tuner, the CD player or the amplifier or speakers. As for the comparison between Hi-Fi components and PC or portable audio devices, in my opinion there is no competition. Basically a PC is a storage system and although it has the means of playing audio files, that isn't it's main purpose. You can get high quality sound cards but I fail to see how a?300 PC such as I am using now can compare with the ?1200 CD player on my Hi-Fi system. Another draw back is with file compression. MP3 files are the result of the original sound file being compressed to 10% of it's original size and hence has quality loss. These files are fine for their purpose but for serious listening, they lack quality. I listen to these files on my PC fed through a mid range HI-Fi system but for really serious listening I take the CD down to the big system and let it rip. I think it really depends on what your son wants to do and what he will be happy with a couple of years down the road. I think I will conclude with an illustration; Both a comfortable family car and a dump truck will get you from New York to California but I ask you, which would you prefer to travel in? On the other hand if you wanted to transport lots of garbage to the local dump, which vehicle would you rather use?If you want high quality sound reproduction then Hi-Fi separates is the route to take and the choice between CD and vinyl is a matter of personal choice after comparing the options. If you want a mass storage system for your audio files with a reasonably enjoyable listening experience then a good PC with a high quality sound card fed through a reasonable stereo system will do and you could enhance the sound quality by only listening to Wave files but that raises storage space questions. I'm sorry this has went on a bit but it isn't the sort of subject that merits a glib response. Walter. To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
RE: Gapless Cd creation: Re: Can it be done? How do I do it?
Hi Matthew. I don't own Sound Forge but I do have Gold Wave. Your explanation is thorough but as you say, techi and complicated but I do know what you mean that it isn't so daunting once you know how. It is clear there isn't an easy way of doing this so until I can either afford to get the right software and gain the experience and confidence to do this I will have to settle for just fading in one track and fading it out at the end. Thanks for your help though I do appreciate it and it has answered my query. Walter. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org]on Behalf Of Matthew Bullis Sent: 04 June 2009 08:51 To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Gapless Cd creation: Re: Can it be done? How do I do it? Hello, if you use Sound Forge to extract audio from a cd, and you want the existing track marks to be included within the file, you just check the box in the extraction wizzard that comes up. I don't think it matters whether you choose markers or regions. If you have .wav file data on your hard disc, you can place markers at the desired track points with Sound Forge. You go to the top of the file, hit m for the first marker, go to the bottom, hit m for the end marker, and then go through the file, hitting m whenever you want a new track mark. Then you convert these into regions, by hitting alt s, r, and then m, and say yes to the prompt. Now you're not going to be able to burn a gapless disc from here. You will have to extract the regions into individual files and fix the sector boundaries. Sound Forge only has a track at once burner built in, meaning it has the two-second gaps. They do have a product called CD Architect, but I never figured that out, either by inaccessibility or through program confusion. Once you get the files correctly cut on sector boundaries, you'll want to make a lossless flac data set, which involves another program, your flac encoder of choice. I know this sounds overwhelming and complicated, but I've done this almost every day for the past few months, and frequently over the past four years, while collecting my ever-growing concert recordings. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes very smooth. Thanks a lot. RE: Gapless Cd creation: Re: Can it be done? How do I do it?
Hi Mathew. I have joined files together with Gold Wave and It seems fine but I have not burned these files to disc as I am at this point experimenting. However, I have ripped CDs with CDEX as one single track as this was determined by the content. On the CD though there are Track Markers, how do I replicate this with the CD I've just ripped to my hard drive as one large file without actually splitting the track? In addition, I've downloaded such files from other mailing lists and want to burn them to CD but to ad track indexing points but without actually splitting the file into separate distinct files with a discernible join, even if it is almost unnoticeable, I would notice it. Mini discs have the great facility of adding track markers without interfering with the content of the disc. The way around my problem is to record onto MD the album, add the track markers and then burn the resulting disc to a CD with my stand alone Hi-Fi CD writer. The problem with this is there are so many processes, and especially from PC to mini disc as this would have to be via poor quality connecting cables and through a mini jack plug and recorded in real time in analogue. I say poor quality connecting cables because I'm used to using very high quality inter-connects ($500 a pair)on my equipment. I noticed in Nero Express, in the properties of a file to be burned an Indexing tab but I don't know what that does nor how to use it. If it would do what I hope it would then my problem might be solved (once I've cracked how to use it. Walter.) ---Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org]on Behalf Of Matthew Bullis Sent: 04 June 2009 07:03 To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Gapless Cd creation: Re: Can it be done? How do I do it? OK, getting really fine and technical here. If you splice files together in Sound Forge, and you hear a click, or you otherwise notice the point at which you've joined the files, then there is something wrong with the .wav files before you've even joined them. You'll need to use a program called WavTrim to fix the two files before you join them. This way, it can look at the ends of each file on either side, trim out any digital garbage, and present you with cleaned-up files which you can then join. Sound Forge's problem is that while splitting the files is fine, and the playback on computer is seamless, when written to cd, the byte allocation data is off, and only when you play back the audio cd will you then hear any clicks, hesitations, or ticks, while the .wav files that still reside on your hard drive play back flawlessly. It's worth it to learn this correctly, because if you trade a concert to someone, and your cd to them has these mistracked errors, and they don't fix them, and then they burn a copy for someone else, more tracking errors occur. Their failure to check this problem results possibly in double errors, and it can go downhill from there. The worst case I've come across is where someone did heaven knows what while making the cds, or five or six people ignored the problems, and actual seconds of audio was lost, which of course couldn't be recovered. OK, I'll stop there, as it might have got a bit nit-picky, but I appreciate the effort when someone presents a well taken care of show, which flows seamlessly, like you're right there in the concert. Can it be done? How do I do it?
Hi Folks. I have a question that has been troubling me for some years but never bothered to ask about it but now I think I would like to know if it can be done and how to do it. When you buy a commercial CD; say of a live performance, the disc has track numbers or index points depending on your terminology. Although these track points exist the performance is seamless, in other words if when playing the entire disc, you have no idea you have moved from one track to another. Now, here's my question. When burning a CD how can I get the same effect. Out of interest, I am totally blind and use Nero Express 6.3 with Jaws 8 (hoping to upgrade to Jaws 10 in the next few months). I use Gold wave as my editor and I have express burn, WMA and Nero as my disc burners. I also have Reel player but have never used it to burn discs as I don't know how to. As a general rule though I use Nero Express to burn unless there is a reason I can't. I often use the "no Pause Between Tracks" feature, especially with live recordings where there is no natural blank portions but even with this and with the best will in the world, there is still a slight jump when playing a disc with this feature when playing the entire disc and it moves from one track to another. Does any of the burners/editors I have mentioned allow me to accomplish my aim or do I need to purchase another burner that will and if so, which burners will do this. I hope someone can help and answer a question and a problem that has bothered me for years. Walter. To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
RE: Goldwave markers editing and playing
Hi Peter. I had a similar problem a couple of months ago. Not the exact problem but very similar. I at one time had no problem with markers until suddenly, out of the blue things went wrong. I eventually discovered that each time I launched Gold Wave I needed to Maximize it. I never had to do that before but now I do and when I do things go smoothly as they did before. I'm not saying this is your problem but it might help. I have been out of the loop since my hard-drive crashed a month ago. But I am slowly on the mend. One thing in Goldwave is really perplexing me. I must have hit a set of keys that changed a setting, but I don't know how to get back to my original settings. When editing a file in GW, I move the start markers to where I think the sound trimming should be done. I hit the home key to move the cursor to the start marker. I then hit play to start my editing. But lately it seems as if the placement of start and finish markers is just ignored. I will hit play and while I expect the sound to commence with the new start marker, it resumes where the cursor was left originally. This has never happened before and I wonder what I have done to get into this mess. Thanks in advance for any help. As of a few minutes ago, I took a look at the batch processing options in Goldwave, but can find no one step way to select all these files, and consolidate all these mp3 files into one file. Is there a way to do this, or must I copy each file, one after the other, adding them to the last mp3 file created in a manual fashion. Surely there has to be an easier way to do this. RE: Editing Audio
Hi. I don't know what you really want to do here. Are you looking for an automated means of changing these file names? If so I don't think there is such a thing. You may have to rip the albums again but making sure WMP is instructed to interrogate the data base for the album details. If you can't do this then you will have to change the information manually. Firstly, open up the folder your music tracks are in and arrow down to the track you want to rename. Once you are there press f2 and it opens up an edit box for that file and you only need delete the "Track Unknown" tag and type in the name of the track and then press enter. You can do the same for the folder name. If however you wish to change the details in the property fields then again go to the track you wish to alter and then press ALT and enter to take you to properties. Press Control and Tab to take you to the summary page and tab to either properties or advanced and press the space bar. There you will find as you arrow down the album name, the artists name, the track number, the duration and also the bit rate. To change album name and track title etc you need to press enter on these fields to take you to forms mode and an edit box to make the changes. Once you have made the changes you wish, tab to OK and press the space bar and the changes will be made on the property list. Hope this is of help. RE: MP3 audio files
Hi John. Firstly, launch Windows Media Player. Next tab until you come to "shuffle" and be sure it is turned off otherwise your files will be played in a random order. Once you have made sure the shuffle is turned off go to the folder where you have your bible files stored and open it. You have two options here; you can do a Control/A to select all the files or highlight Genesis 1 Verse 1 and do a control/shift/end key. This second option is the best because if you have already read from Genesis 1 verse 1 to Exodus chapter four Verse 10 then you will want to on your next visit listen from Exodus 4 verse 11 onwards and not the part you have already listened to. OK, lets say you have highlighted genesis 1 verse 1 and you have pressed the control/shift and then the end key. That means from that point to the end has been selected. now tab to "Tool Bar." This may say "Toolbar Close Button" and if so, hit the space bar to open it. You now tab once and you should hear "music Tasks Outline Button Expanded." Once you hear this, press the down arrow once and you will be instructed that to play your selection you have to press the space bar and then your files, in order will start to play. If I mentioned earlier, if you want to play from a part further down, say from a point in proverbs or Daniel ETC. then come down to that point and do as described above. Hope this is of help. All of the files for the entire Book are correctly and sequentially numbered and automatically placed in order in that folder. I hit enter on the first file which begins to play in WMP. AWhen the first file is done, everything stops. WMP won't play the next ordered file until I go and hit enter on it. Question: What do I need to do to the Bible folder in order to make the computer's media player play the files one after the other without stoping - just like what naturally happens when you were to put the original MP3 CD into your CD drive. RE: looking for free editor
Hi Donald. To my knowledge, there are no free audio editors. They will all cost you and the cost varies widely. However there is a trial period with Gold Wave which gives you full functionality for a limited period. If you were able to get your work done with in the prescribed time limit then it wouldn't cost you anything. I don't know if you use a mouse and hence have some sight or a screen reader in which case, you would have to also install the scripts to help you use the programme efficiently. Yes, you can use CDEX to record to your hard drive but only that, you can't edit it in any way but if you don't want to edit it, or are happy to edit it at a later date then CDEX will work. RE: Step by step instructions please!
Hi Donald. Firstly, you will need a cassette player with either left and right phono sockets or a headphone socket. There is a free programme called CDEX which includes with in it a recorder but if you want to split the contents of the tape into separate tracks then you will need an audio editor such as Gold Wave or Total Recorder or Sound Forge ETC. These are also recorders and will do what you want with ease. If you don't want to split the file into tracks then the CDEX recorder will do fine. When you decide what you wish to do and what programme you want to use then let us know and we can help. The problem is, until you decide what you want to do it is difficult to give step by step instructions as each programme has different controls and shortcut keys and although some on the list may be familiar with all the well known editors, some like myself are only familiar with Gold Wave and not any of the others. If your end goal is to burn the contents on your cassette to a CD then there is a piece of equipment that will do that for you without having to use your PC but I don't know anything more about it or what it is called as I've had no experience with it. Perhaps some on this list though can help there. As it stands, that seems to be the case Trace. I tried pressing the submit button again after getting the free $10 and all it said is my balance is not yet under $2 so the deduction is, even though I already have got the free $10 if my balance was under $2 and a week had passed, I would get another $10. Hi Don. OK, after the Burn menu button I have: sync, sync menu button, Media guide button, service menu button, select a category button, Layout options button, search edit box edit, search options, library tree tree view, Primary view list view, hide basket btn button, untitled play list, basket list view list view drag items here, seek left slider, rotate metadata icon button, turn shuffle (on or off), turn repeat (on or off) button, play button, mute button, volume left right slider, switch to compact mode button. There is no start or stop button here as I have not selected any files for burning. The option will only appear once files have been selected for the purpose. If you find WMP difficult to use and cannot resolve your problem then it might be worthwhile using another burner. I use Nero express, version 6.3 and get good resultsI am using JAWS 8 at the moment but still got good results and found it accessible when using JAWS 7. I didn't have Nero express when I had JAWS 5 so don't know if it would be so accessible but versions 7 and 8 work fine. I have no idea how much it would cost as I imagine you would have to pay for it if you don't already have it. Another option is to use express burn. RE: WMA online store and subscription rights
Hi Norma. You assume correctly my friend, it is 11. I was playing around with WMP last night to see if I could rectify things and ended up making things much worse. Firstly, it was when I launched WMp and then did an alt/T to take me to the tools menu. I didn't get any of the expected menu options nor could I access the tabs but instead I was locked into the file menu. This happened whether I did an Alt/V for view or an Alt/T for tools, only the file menu showed up. After that the next problem came when again I launched WMP, I was immediately directed to the online store and landed on the silverlite link (don't know what that is). I was though able to after a while access the proper tools menu. The strange thing is, just as I was wearying of resolving the problem that night and was about to shut down I played a music file and I wasn't then taken to the on line store; curious I thought as I hadn't done anything consciously to change things). I then exited that file and WMP and then launched it once more. This time I wasn't sent to the online store and I was able to access the tools menu and tabs. I decided at this point to close down and allow any new settings to be saved. This morning, about 10 minutes ago (just before starting this reply I launched WMP once more and it seems to be fine although it is responding very slowly but maybe pick up it's response speed once the PC has warmed up. I really don't know what caused this problem but it started just after I installed DVD Audio Extractor and then did a test rip and then played the ripped file. I am apprehensive as I fear if I don't discover what the problem is, it will reoccur at some time in the future without warning. RE: WMA online store and subscription rights
Hi Norma. That box isn't checked and it seems each time I launch Media Player I'm immediately taken to the on line store and I also get taken there each time I play a music file. I have no idea why this is happening nor how to prevent it. Walter. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Norma A. Perhaps you have that box checked. Go to tools then options and then the player tab. HTH Norma At 01:58 AM 08/19/2008, you wrote: >Hi People. I could do with some advice here. WMA online store and subscription rights
Hi People. I could do with some advice here. I am finding lately that each time I open a WMA file, it plays but about 3 or four seconds later I get the message that it is connecting to the on line store.Once this happens it is very difficult to close down that file although the track still plays. Also, sometimes after I have closed down a WMA file It tells me it is cancelling the download of subscription rights and then I get a progress report giving the percentages. Is there any way to discontinue this. I don't know where to look nor how to remedy it. Thanks to a member of this list for sending me the Programme DVD Audio Extractor I spoke of last week. They very kindly also sent a key gen and I now have things up and running. Your help with my WMA query will be appreciated. RE: DVD audio extractor,an accessible one that is?
Hi. You say it is a faster rip but are you saying that the comparison is with the same bit rate? The higher the quality the longer the rip. For example it will take longer to rip to 320 than 128, so are you saying it is still quicker even ripping to the same bit rate? Ann, i would agree with you I like it very much and the speed is great takes less time to get the audio from the dvd then with dvd audio extracter. - Original Message - From: "ANN" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Friday, August 15, 2008 8:05 AM Subject: Re: DVD audio extractor,an accessible one that is? > Hi, > > I have used Imtoo's DVD Audio Ripper for years, and find it quite > accessible with Jaws.
