Re: Kodak film changes
It's a good thing I didn't like Supra 400 and 800. They existed for what - two years? I guess it's not a good idea to develop a liking for any of Kodak's C-41 films. They don't seem to last long. Supra 400 is my fave film for photos of the indoors of building projects with available artificial light. Other than that I can't understand it either. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Good morning, Peter, What distinction do you hang on the word true, in true macro. Must be a subtlety there that I'm not aware of. Or, more likely, I've forgotten it's accepted meaning. g Peter Smekal wrote: Thanks guys for all these very constructive ideas. It seems to boil down to: 24/2.8 + 85/2 + tripod. No 50/1.4, no 135/3.5, no winder. The flash I own is the AF280T, and it seems it will have to stay at home too. The only thing I have not been able to make up my mind about yet is the 35-105 zoom. Of course it is rather heavy and big. It even looks that way. Its definitely not unobtrusive. But I like it as a walking-around lense. Seeems to me, if you plan to be taking photos not exactly related to your original quest, and you will be able to stand the weight and bulk, have at it! Having a lens with you with which you're totally familiar is always useful... Here's something to think about, however...if you've tested that zoom well enough to be quite satisfied with it's performance capabilities, maybe you don't really need that 85/2? If you're really reducing bulk... You will be sacrificing the f/2.0 speed of the 85, but if you can/will use the tripod, maybe even that doesn't matter. And I like its macro capabilitites. Although it isn't true macro I've used it many times to shoot interesting details, like door-knobs, coins, stones, fruits, flowers etc ... Can anyone talk me out of it? RE: What's the best way to clean filters?
On the Lens Pen, William Robb wrote: I tried using a brand new lens pen to clean the rear element of my finder base not long ago. This is not a product I will use on anything I like, ever again. I was afraid it had wrecked my finder base by smearing a grease like substance onto the glass. Hi Bill, I've occasionally noticed the same smearing effect when I use a Lens Pen. I believe that the grease I see in these cases is actually grease that's already on the optic. (If I do a detergent-and-water cleaning on an optic like that, I find that going back at it with a Lens Pen doesn't introduce any new grease.) I don't think these pens are good at removing large amounts of grease, but I've found that they work pretty well for cleaning small amounts of grease, and they're pretty convenient in the field -- as long as you're not trying to clean anything that's ~too~ greasy. So I guess I have to qualify my answer. I wholeheartedly agree with your suggestion about dish detergent and warm water. One or two other folks mentioned that as well, and I think someone even mentioned using a sterile cotton ball along with the soap and water. That's exactly what I use to clean my 8 diameter telescope mirror, in fact. I'm curious if you've ever had any luck with glass cleaners like Windex. I've actually had good luck with this stuff on occasion, and I haven't noticed any residue if I do it carefully. I'd be interested to hear anyone else's experiences. Outdoor landscape ? I have a 283 Wayne, and it seems to do me just fine for many types of shots but most of them involve portraits of one type or another. When you say landscape I seem to envision grand vistas and such at great distances and I don't know if any flash would be appropriate. Maybe you could elaborate ? If you're just looking for fill flash or a do-it-all-no-matter-what-camera flash .. then either 283 or 285 will work great. Switching IR cleaning off turns the pictures back to normal. Any ideas of what may go on? Does silver absorb all the IR making scanner thing that there's nothing but dirt? We have the same problem with digital ice. It seems that it doesn't deal with the reflectivity of a silver halide image. Nikon documentation indicates that digital ice is not usable with silver halide images. It would seem there are limits to what Nikon can acomplish. Totally unfamiliar with Fort Worth, so all my comments apply to San Antonio. Camera shops: Not the best city in the world for those. We have a friendly one, not exceptionally well-stocked -- Boyd's, at the corner of Blanco Road and Lockhill-Selma. We have a well-stocked one with a reputation for unfriendliness -- Camera Exchange on San Pedro Ave. By the way, in case you do want to visit those shops, be aware neither one is open on Sundays. Places to see: World-class zoo (with miniature railroad that is or was the world's longest); four 18th-century missions (in addition to the Alamo -- the Shrine of Texas Liberty. The other four are less touristy and in fact all the chapels are still in regular use as chapels); some nice and some truly horrific architecture. I may have even more ideas when I'm a bit more awake :-) I just happen to have spent a lot of time shooting the zoo and the missions. Of course there's also the Riverwalk. RE: What's the best way to clean filters?
Windex has some slightly moist wipes that work very well with filters, then I usually follow up with a clean microfiber cloth. In my experience, the lens pen must be handled very carefully in order that it NOT pick up oil from somewhere and redeposit it where it's unwelcome. I usually use my lens pen to clean the viewfinder eyepiece on my cameras and it's hard to keep them from picking up oil there, so I try to keep at least one clean lens pen as a spare. I need to find a good method to clean the lens pens, if they can be cleaned, because they aren't cheap enough here to be disposable. I wash my microfiber cloths in mild detergent, rinse well and hang them up inside to dry. More kit decisions advice
Someone earlier got good advice on their trip to Greece. Okay, try this. I'm going to the High Sierra camps in the backcountry of Yosemite, day hikes between each camp, with side trips one or two days from base. Staying at the camps, so no sleeping bag, tent or food is being carried. Camera gear is: MZ-S only (so spare), with EITHER the 24-90FA and 70-210F, and possibly the 20mmFA as well, OR all primes, as follows: 24mmK (2.8), 35mmFA (2.0), 50mmF (1.7), 150mmM (3.5). I will want to use a cokin graduated filter to knock sky down. It has a 67mm ring. Use of that with the primes will require fussy step-up rings, while with the 24-90 and the 20 it will be plug and play. To me that seems the decision maker, because I believe the 24-90 to be good enough to compete with the primes, plus I like to crop with zoom. Any opinions, however, would be welcomed. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Re: Flip side: Ex: Infinity Focus problem
Simon, You may want to check to see if your other lenses are focusing to infinity with your camera to rule out mirror misalignment. Or put the lens on another body to check as well. Re: Best Portrait lens for the 6x7?
Brother Albano, I have both the 165/2.8 and 165/4 Leaf shutter lens. Both are quite nice as far as all items mentioned except close focusing. To get a tight head shot with either one, you must use an extension tube. I have never tried the 135/4 macro, but I'm sure that head shots are easier. I just don't know what the bokeh is like. For what I have, I prefer the 165/2.8 when I don't need fill flash. The extra stop is handy and the lens has a built in lens hood that just slides out. If you do fill flash then the Leaf shutter lens will do the trick all the way around. Hopefully someone can address whether the 135 macro works well as a portrait lens. 6x7 PH SB 67 hood, can be used with filters?
Hi, brothers Just a quick question: The PHSB67 hood, is bayonet, screw-on or what? If it is bayonet, it can't be used with filters, unless they are the special bayonet Pentax ones? I'm asking because I found one in a store here (wasn't able to take a close-up look, the store was closed) and I want to know if this hood is worth having. RE: Best Portrait lens for the 6x7?
I'd recommend the 200mm F4. If you use the old one, you'll need a small extension tube for head shots, the newer one will focus close enuff without one. There's another solution, but I havent tried it yet and thats to use the 90mm 105mm, or 135mm on a 2X TC. Min. Focus distance shouldnt be a problem at all that way. The very slight softening caused by the TC could actually be an asset for portraits. I picked up a Vivitar multi-coated 2X TC and my initial test results with it were outstanding, very little loss of quality. Way cheaper than buying another 67 lens if you already have the 105 for example. I wouldnt recommend a 165mm or shorter lens, the focal length is just too short for tight head shots. Re: ME + 35-135
i was wondering if someone could give me some information about how reliable this model is, if it has some known flaws, things like that. it is very tempting to me, but it seems strange that top cover is black and in all the pictures seen on the net seems wrong. Black ME's are normal, and not all that uncommon, either. The ME seems to be quite reliable (for a 25-year-old camera). Fred - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: 6x7 PH SB 67 hood, can be used with filters?
Albano, I have this hood. It is a clip on type. That means that the edge of the lens/filter needs some thread to clip onto. You can screw a filter on and then put the hood on. You can't use a Cokin holder and put the hood on after that. However, Cokin makes a hood for their holder if you need it. Re: stops and scales
You write: Scott J. Fine [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am under the impression that f-stops are measured in a scale that is either based on 1 or 1.4, as in: 1, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4.0, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32... It's actually based on the square root of 2 (1.414) and has to do with how the area of the aperture is calculated. The f stop is the ratio of the aperture diameter to the focal length. An f stop of 1.0 (theoretical) with a 50mm lens at infinity would mean an aperture diameter of 50mm. If you wanted to halve the area of the aperture (to reduce the amount of light reaching the film by half), you wouldn't halve the diameter because the area of a circle is: pi x r**2. Halving the radius would result in an aperture one fourth the area (or 2 stops). Therefore, to halve the aperture area you divide the diameter (and therefore the radius) by the square root of 2. The new f stop becomes f/1.414 (f/1.4) as the diameter is 1/1.414 of the focal length. Divide by the square root of 2 again and you get an f stop of f/2 as the diameter is now 1/2 the focal length. Keep dividing by the square root of 2 and you get the rest of the scale. Please tell me if this is correct - I subtracted one stop from the next largest, divided that number by 2 and added the result to the larger aperture. I cam up with the following 1/2 stop scale. 1.414 (1.4) 1.706 (1.7) 1.999 (2) 2.413 (2.5) 2.827 (2.8) 3.412 (3.5) 3.997 (4) 4.824 (4.5) 5.652 (5.6) 6.822 (6.7) 7.992 (8) 9.646 (9.5) 11.301 (11) 13.640 (13.5) 15.980 (16) 19.288 (19) 22.596 (22) 30.273 (?) 31.951 (32) And if I take the difference between apertures, multiply by .333 and add that result to the larger aperture, I get 1/3 stops? As in f/9 being 1/3 of a stop smaller than f/8? ((11.301 - 7.992)(.333)) + 7.992 = 9.093 [f/9] And thank you all for your answers, even the ones with links to information that I have no hope of understanding :) s/ http://www.eyecafe.net - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Hi JCO, I'm actually pretty happy with the Epson Glossy Photo Paper (the stuff that runs $10 to $13 or so for 20 sheets of 8x10). There's a Premium Glossy which I haven't used, so I'm not sure how different of a look it will have. The Epson Glossy out of my Epson 820 printer looks very much like a conventional print. I know some folks have said they don't generally like the Epson papers, so your mileage may vary. Not an answer to the question you asked, but Mark Roberts showed me some 11x14's he did on some Ilford rag paper, back while he was still in town here. Man, that stuff looked great! Of course, you get what you pay for, and that stuff was something like $5 a sheet. A little out of my range, for sure! Hope this helps. Are you sure it's not actually a TC or an extension tube? (I think a 50mm - I'm not sure of the exact length - extension tube is typically used to give 1:1 with some of the 100mm macros.) What markings (if any) does it have? Does it have any internal glass (as opposed to a hollow extension tube)? Wouldn't an extension tube have to give enough extension to extend the lens to 100mm (in this case)? I'm under the impression that it takes enough extension to equal the focal length to get 1:1. That means to generate the series, you ~multiply~ by a constant factor. To get the series of whole stops, start with 1, and multiply by 2^0.5 (that is, the square root of two). To get the series of half-stops, start with one, and multiply by 2^0.25 (that is, the fourth root of two, which is also the square root of the original square-root-of-two factor). To get the series of third-stops, start with 1, and multiply by 2^0.1667 (that is, the sixth root of two, which is also the cube root of the original square-root-of-two factor). See the pattern? However I would assume that most are performance optimised for close distances much some like enlarging lenses are optimised for a limited range of working distances or magnifications. Re: Best Portrait lens for the 6x7?
For me,it's the 165/4 LS, not contest. Why? Simply because it allows the use of an umbrella and strobe for fill when shooting outdoor portraits or figures. It will do a head and shoulders portrait without an extension tube. I sometimes use the shortest tube for tightly cropped head shots. In 6x7 format, sharpness isn't really an issue. RE: OT: Digital Ice + Kodak TMZ
Digital ice works using an infrared light. Conventional black and white and Kodachrome films are not transparent to IR light, E-6 and C-41 (including chromegenic BW) are, so digital ice doesn't work with BW and Kodachrome. We have digital ice on the Noritsu 2711 printer at work. It defeats digital ice when using conventional BW. Having defeated that a couple of times, the prints will often take a blurred/smeared look to them. The moral of the story; clean your BW and kodachromes well before scanning without digital ice. Follow-up on sluggish diaphragm problem
A while back I mentioned that I had seen a lens at a store, on which the diaphragm closed slowly even though there was no oil buildup visible on it (a relatively common problem with older lenses that have been exposed to excessive heat). The diaphragm was distinctly sluggish, and I used that fact to bargain the price down (on a Pentax 35mm f/3.5, a very sharp lens -- I had one previously which I sold, and missed). I brought the lens home, and began playing with the little lever on the back that closes down the diaphragm. After a couple of dozen times working it back and forth, the diaphragm perked up, and now it is as fast as new. It seems that just from sitting in the store (on a camera, which forces it open) and the dirt buildup, it had become sluggish, but a little exercise brought it back to life. _ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. These repairers obviously short-cut on the sticky-mirror repair, just replacing a few surface rubbers won't cut it, the camera has to be pulled right to bits, i.e. scattered all over the work-bench. None of the many LX that I have had repaired in OZ that had sticky-mirror have ever suffered it again. These dudes are hopeless :-( On the other hand, the old guy in CR Kenndy stripped my MDA into pieces and didn't bother to put it back together properly. Not to mention he charged me AU$180 for a 5 min fix on my MX which he latter claimed I did something to it and tried to shift the blame on me, when the jamming problem kept coming back. And he always treated me like shxt everytime I went there. Very nice, very nice indeed. regards, Alan Chan _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: OT: Anti-close up lenses?
Andre, Interesting idea! I never though of putting one of these lenses reversed on ANYTHING, much less a 6x7. Let me know how your homemade adapter works, I'd definitly be interested. It's definitly a C mount lens, and a C mount camera. No way to change lens flange or anything. The lens in question is a 3.3-8 mm lens. I am now BELIEVE that the lens is meant to mount close to some other ocular device; such as a microscope or telescope. I'm going to put it away for further use later. IL Bill andre wrote: I guess you would need to do something that is not possible: push the lens inside the body... By the way, it may interest you to know that you can use 8mm and 16mm cine lenses REVERSED for Triple-X macros (the pun is for lilliputians). I mean 3X and over. If this is the case, you can vary the distance of the lens from the film plane with a bellow (and easily cover full frame on a Pentax 67), but the distance of the subject to the front of the lens (well... we could say the back as the lens is reversed) should not go over the distance between a 16mm cine lens and the 16mm film in a 16mm camera. This if you want the best optical quality. I don't know if this is clear... and if it may interest some PDMLers. I've got the theory (some...), I've acquired a few lenses recently, I'm actually working on some home-made adapters... the practice will follow within a few months I hope. Andre Hey gang, I know this is a question that's never been asked before. I know to be able to focus CLOSER to an object, you need a close up lens . . . . . . BUT, I have a project where I need to actually be able to focus FURTHER from the lens. The lens in question is a c-mount lens, whose focus seems limited to just a few mm away from the front of the lens. I know this is an odd question, but does ANYONE know of - diopter filters, or some other fix? Thanks, IL Bill - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Follow-up on sluggish diaphragm problem
Could the old grease that attracted so much dirt and becoming dry over the years. Still, it's a good idea to clean and relubricate it, if you can do it yourself. regards, Alan Chan A while back I mentioned that I had seen a lens at a store, on which the diaphragm closed slowly even though there was no oil buildup visible on it (a relatively common problem with older lenses that have been exposed to excessive heat). _ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. RE: just bought a photo printer
Epson premium glossy, once you know what you are doing. Their Lustre paper is nice, too. I find the Epson stuff works the best, although some of the Lumijet textured stuff is kind of fun. For test prints, and screwing around, go to Costco and you can get packs of 100 Epson Photo paper for about 20 bucks. It is quite nice, but has a tendency to fade. Oh, yeah; start looking for a second job to support your ink habit. A great printer; you'll have lots of fun. C. Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2002 14:46:13 -0400 From: J. C. O'Connell [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: just bought a photo printer Heads up guys. Epson is now offering a $100 rebate on their 1280 printer. Seemed like a good deal so I took the plunge. Found one online for $417 before rebate so net cost is finally reasonable. Question: Can anybody recommend a good paper (glossy) for doing color and BW printing with this machine?
