with these ccd's or filters where they may have come this way from

these showing in my pictures until fairly recently, I just ought to

Site for comprehensive CF/SD memory tests?

2007-01-18 Thread P. J. Alling
Rant

I'm finding the Internet and it's search engines increasingly
frustrating. The local Staples has the discontinued Sandisk Yellow
gamers 1GB SD cards in stock at a very reasonable price. I've spent
several hours trying to find a comparison test, or even just a
read/write specification, to see if these cards are really any different
from the standard 1GB Sandisk cards, (except for the color of the case
that is). Yes I know, as I said, the price is very attractive but I
have plenty of SD storage at this time. So even if they're cheap I'm
not interested unless they're a little better than bottom of the
barrel. But all I can find is retailers with the usual puff
descriptions, no hard information.

The Internet used to be good for independent pages with information,
sometimes good sometimes bad posted by everyone and his brother about
any subject, and the search engines, especially Google would find them
and make them available. Now all you get is page after page of huxters,
some with multiple entries all pointing to the same _damned_ useless
pages, (as opposed to just useless pages).

Sheeish, I must be getting old.

/rant

If anyone actually read this far, I'd appreciate a pointer if there is
such a site, (except Galbbraith of course, I've already got him
bookmarked, and didn't look at these cards, probably because they're
for gamers).

RE: It Arrived!

2007-01-18 Thread Tim Øsleby
I am borrowing this lens for a week. Unfortunately the light is no good, so
I haven't really tested it, so all I can comment on is the handling.

So far, it seems a gem of a lens. It is lighter than what I expected, and
the focus clutch is very nice. The manual focus feel is all right. I
definitely feel some LBA coming ;-)

I have the 12-24 and overall its a really nice lens. True is a bit on
the big side by pentax standards but its not too bad.

Pros:
Sharp... even wide open though it is not at its best.. by f5.6 -
f8 its tack sharp
Flare ... Good flare control considering the fact its an ultra wide...
Distortion ... well controlled and easily correctible in PS
Handling... Lovely

Cons:
Chromatic Aberration: Sometimes it can be annoying but so far I
have not had cases of CA that could not be corrected in ACR.

The thing to keep in mind is to watch out for it. I recently had a
shot that required a lot of cloning to remove a tangle of electrial
cables after about 3 hours of cloning out I realised I had forgotten
to remove the CA... In colour the CA was barely noticable but when I
converted the shot to monochrome it really stood out so it took more
time to clone out the CA.. Yes I know you can fix it in PS evern
after ACR but somehow it does not do as good a job...

I only wish it was a D-FA lens instead of a DA lens that way I would
be able to shoot some lovely ultra wide velvia slides with it.

Overall a great lens that I am rapidly becoming addicted to.

Regards

Patrick

 My 12-24 arrived today.
First impression: It sure is big.
I haven't done more than to stick it onto the camera in the store and see
how straight it stays through the zoom range.
Do they really have to be this big?
It's huge, almost as big as my 45mm 6x7 lens.
The guy at the camera store said it was the biggest Pentax lens he had
ever
 seen.
I offered to take my 600 in some time.

I'm afraid you might be disappointed with the colour version. As you
can see, it's back-lit, and being winter - there isn't much colour to
be had. Anyhow, I'm an accommodating guy, so here you are:

Yes? No? Which is better - lens one? or Two? ;)

Mike

I like the color one much better. The gray scale version left me feeling
empty. The color version has some feeling... mostly cold, but nevertheless
I like it. Could have probably used a smaller aperture possibly, I get the
feeling that the mountain and clouds are not quite sharp. or maybe it's the
light.

Thanks for posting the color version.

Hi there.

I finally decided to try and buy a card from Office Depot. A short chat
with the salesmen showed that they could be trusted and indeed they sold
be the genuine article - SD Extreme III x133 card. It works fine and I
hope that my story is actually over.

Naturally this card had a price of roughly $65 which is twice the price

2007-01-18 Thread Kenneth Waller
For Sale - AOC - original metal lens hood, 49mm threads, marked as used on
Takumar 105mm 2.8 100mm 4.0.

To quote a frequent PDML poster -
This is an excellent hood for the 50mm lenses on film and digi as well as a
very good choice for the 77mm Ltd, which suffers from a short built in
hood.

Has signs of usage - a few superficial scratches - otherwise in very good
 to new condition.

$12.00 USD. Buyer pays shipping.

You may want to add a tiny bit more pressure during your pass, and make
extra sure the cleaning surface is parallel to the sensor. Sounds stupid, I
know, but I made that mistake a couple times when cleaning sensors at my
 last job.

I've been pretty much away -
My friend Nora died on January 11th at 89 -
We had been friends for over 40 years.
NOt unexpected, but sad for the survivors, nonetheless.

She was sent off in royal style, in a very touching fashion.
Her kids asked me to take photos of the proceedings, the
party celebrating her, the burial and the interior of the house
before things were taken down and stored or sold or passed on
to children, grand children and great grand children... not that I
had not already taken many pictures there - there were specific
things that were especially treasured they wanted to remember as
she had arranged them.

She would have preferred scattered ashes to burial, but these things
are for those left behind and she tacitly consented.

As it happens, the cemetery is the very one which Nora took me to
in 1978 to point out the No Permanent Planting sign that is in my book.
Alas, it has been replaced with No dogs allowed in Cemetery.

Pentax price hike?

DCWatch Longtime test #6 focuses on accessories such as extension
tubes and other gizmos that makes strange things to lenses.

http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/cda/longterm/2007/01/19/5391.html

It looks as if Pentax is planning to increase the price on these
items that are expensive to make and keep in stock, probably as they
don't sell in significant numbers. Judging from the table, many items
will double in price.

The Japanese press announcement is dated 11507 so I guess it will be
a few days until we see something similar in English.

Re: finally put my hands on K10D... part III

2007-01-18 Thread Peter Lacus
Boris,

The FAJ 18-35 sample I have is very sharp on wide end, even reasonably
sharp fully open. You may have a bad sample. If you wish I can send you
some full size JPEGS from my *istD shot with this lens.

yes please, that would be very useful as I said I have nothing to
compare my shots with. You can use this address but please keep the
attachment size within reasonable limits.

But this is not just about sharpness - while images produced by fixed
50s are refined (smooth and sharp at the same time), images from zoom
are rough - yes, they may be apparently sharp, but IMHO this is not
real sharpness (just higher contrast). Also about all possible
aberrations are present - from color fringing through geometric
distortions to softening towards the edges. As you said, I may have a
bad sample but even if my sample is fine it's probably unfair to compare
such basic zoom with specimens of some of the best glass available
regardless of price. Too bad I've started with the latter...

BTW I've tried to develop these pictures using ACR in PSCS2 and with
contrast set to the minimum they now look much better to me. Nobel Prize
to the inventors of the RAW image processing! :-)

Having said that of course I cannot dispute the fact that 50 mm lenses
 give better image quality.

indeed.

Peter

Casual lens test, SMC Pentax-FA 135 f/2.8

2007-01-18 Thread John Whittingham
The weather over here in the UK has been absolutely terrible for weeks now,
so the other day I decided to do some lens testing indoors, also giving me
chance to familiarise myself with the workings of ACR. I was shooting with
the *istD, mainly tripod mounted using a cable release, but this one was a
casual shot as I left work for home with the Pentax FA 135 wide open at f/2.8.
I'm a amazed at the quality of this lens, destined to become one of my

I've spent hours out in the cold shooting snowflakes. I've had no
porblem with the *ist-D and lithium batteries. If I'm goning to be
around all day I will usually leave the camera setup in the un-heated
garage. It's sat out there for 8-10 hours in mid 20's (F) with no
battery problems or other problems. Same is true with the Mz-S.

I do seal the camera in a ziplock bag (or two) before bringing it in.
Condensation on (or within) a camera or lens is my main concern.

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions. My webhost confirmed that it
was a 'brute force' attack that got the password. They said that they
have software in place to detect that with the main logins, but are in

They didn't answer my question about SFTP so I'll ask again. Checking
the logs I found that I was lucky enough to stumble onto the intrusion

Re: Hello! (introduction)

Quoting Mike Dausin (PDML) [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Hello, I've been lurking on the list for a week or two and thought it
was about time I introduce myself. (I actually sent a message once
already, but it doesn't look like it made it. So forgive me if you get
 this message twice)

My name is Mike Dausin and I am a computer security engineer from the
Austin Texas area. I can't quite remember what got me into photography
but I can say this is by far the most fun/interesting/challenging hobby
I've have (also the most expensive, but who's counting?) I mostly take
landscape shots, which gives me a great excuse to go travel. But if I'm
not on the road I try to take abstract photos in my house.

I've flirted with owning a Pentax for several years, but I've only just
now taken the plunge (with a K10.) This is a superb camera. But right
now I'm more surprised at the size of the Pentax Community. I think
I've seen 2,000 e-mails on this list in just over a week! It's good to
know that I'm not the only one out there that isn't shooting CanoNikon.

You can do both, i do:-)

In any case, I look forward to talking with you all soon!

Welcome to the list.

Dave Brooks

 Thanks
   Mike Dausin

Those could be a lot more useful than modifying ShowTags

Thanks John!
