RE: Bruce Gilden
That's an interesting video. I like seeing how photographers go about their work. It's interesting to compare Gilden's approach with HCB's, and his different attitude to flash (which he describes as 'like firing a gun during a concert'). You also get to see some of his contact sheets in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqsOYsZlPX4amp;feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjjGiBUaf4sfeature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnunLXYTzyQ HCB was an elegant, cosmopolitan flaneur or boulevardier. Watching some of this footage on TV once my mother appears to have fallen in love with HCB, whom she considers very handsome. And Martin Parr, who comes across as a harmless nutter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFNae2xpctg Bob -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Fernando Sent: 20 June 2008 01:29 To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Bruce Gilden I found this video (for the street photographers a la in your face) of Bruce Gilden working: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkIWW6vwrvM -- http://www.flickr.com/photos/ferand/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Software PEF support update
All of the Apple applications support all Pentax cameras up to and including the K20D. That would be Aperture, Preview, and iPhoto. I was surprised to find that iPhoto has a rather nice interface and is quite capable of good conversions. It's also very handy for mini albums or when ordering snapshot prints for friends and family. I've never tried Aperture, but I know it's a full featured program in the manner of Lightroom. I'm not sure, but I think there's a PC version as well. Preview is just the free photo viewer that comes on Macs. I think the newest version will open RAW files, but it's mainly a viewing tool. Godders knows a lot more about this. Perhaps he'll respond. I posted this a week or so ago but it wasn't on a friday, so I suspect no one paid attention. Or, nobody wants it I no longer need as I have the 70~300 that is only slightly bigger. I will make a good price to anyone interested. If you are out of the US, talk to me. Me too, I find them entertaining (and in some cases a nice learning tool) It's interesting to compare Gilden's approach with HCB's, and his different attitude to flash (which he describes as 'like firing a gun during a concert'). I used to put HCB on one end and Winogrand on the other (after this video, Winogrand should be replaced by Gilden...); One is like a fisherman, finds a spot with the right geometry to be a potential photograph and waits for the rest of the pieces to fall in place (I read that a similar approach is used by Trent Parke, he goes to the same spot, every day, at the same time of the day, and burns some rolls) and the other one is more like a hunter, moving constantly and expecting random chaos to hit him in the face; I personally enjoy the result they get from both these two approaches (in a different way, though). His confrontational attitude in this video is hilarious, his what-ya-looking-at style in action is so fun to watch, right? And Martin Parr, who comes across as a harmless nutter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFNae2xpctg I'll check them out at home (I'm at work now); I'm curious to see how Parr works, without having watched the video, harmless nutter sounds like a good description ;-) This reminds me of some discussion that I read in a forum not long time ago, where some photographers were complaining about the inclusion of Parr and Sanguineti in Magnum, as they were seeing a detour from the traditional photojournalism style of the agency to a more artsy thing; I like Parr's work, the easy-to-read jokes with a underlying critic to society (as I also like South Park...) Re: Software PEF support update
Not much to add. - All three applications use the same RAW conversion engine that Apple supplies as a system framework. - Aperture is only available on Mac OS X. The editing UI in Preview is limited but facile enough for a quick correction of a RAW file and can output TIFF, JPEG, PNG and other RGB file formats. I've never tried Aperture, but I know it's a full featured program in the manner of Lightroom. I'm not sure, but I think there's a PC version as well. Re: Lightsphere vs Lumiquest
I found another camera store here that carries the Lightsphere line. They had a Whale Tail but I wasn't impressed. I did but another LS, the clear one. When I got home I put a piece of aluminum foil on the back half to reflect the light forward. It makes a tremendous difference in the amount of light output. I can shoot across a big room at f/8 at iso 200 and get good exposures. I also noted that even with a vertical composition and the flash off to the side the light is still nice and no obvious shadow coming from the background. Walt On 6/18/08, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Bruce, Yes, the Whale Tail is newer, and it's similar in concept to the lightsphere. I haven't met anyone who is using one yet. Re: Agility photos. was Re: PUG reminder
Bill, this shot from Matthew is very similar to how i shoot horse jumping. I focus at the base of the jump, which will give me some DOF in front and a bit behind, and what for the moment then shoot. Sounds simply, but it took a while to get the timing down. Lots of useless film, t first. When the dog gets to it, I take a picture. Usually, either too early or too late. That's what I do with my K10D, but I don't find the timing to be too hard. Keeping my left eye open helps. http://www.flickr.com/photos/coneslayer/2441122563/ I previously shot my wife's dogs with manual-focus Canon FD gear, so I guess I got used to working that way. AF.S speeds up prefocusing on the jump, at least. Lately, I've been trying to shoot swallows in flight. I had a 1-in-108 success ratio my first time out. At least it makes the dogs seem easy. Excellent shot!! I never seem to get it quite right. I don't look through the viewfinder at all when shooting Agility, I set up on the obstacle and watch the dog. I just don't quite have the timing down yet. We don't have many events here, so don't get much practice. I tried shooting barn swallows at my inlaws acreage years ago with one of my Nikons (probably the FE). The best I managed over a 36 exposure roll was a black streak near the edge of the frame that could have been anything. Those little suckers are fast. K200D SDM wow...
Let me preface this by saying that I started out with the ZX-5N and moved to the istDS. I became quite familiar with the whirl of the Pentax AF motor. Of course, I could always focus manually to avoid that issue. However, this week I received the K200D paired with the DA* 50-135. I was deafened by the silence of this combination. =) Just to convince myself that nothing was wrong, I put the DA* on the istDS. Fong has an accessory that works much like your aluminum foil. It's called the chrome dome, and it places a reflector in the back and part of the top. Re: K200D SDM wow...
Nice isn't it. I know the feeling. I did a double take when I used my first DA* lens. Initial impression was that nothing happened:-). Paul -- Original message -- From: gldnbearz [EMAIL PROTECTED] Let me preface this by saying that I started out with the ZX-5N and moved to the istDS. The sound of the AF motor assured me that all was right with the world again. Just really pleased by the quiet of SDM technology. Just had to share.
