Tim, The question is: What sort of person is Ole Dan? Is he a sober and reflective sort? Then #1 might be best. Is he relaxed and casual? Then #2. Is he given to melancholy? Then perhaps #3. #4 is the most complex of the four poses; the pose indicates engagement (a conversation with someone out of the frame), but yet is casual, as are the clothes. See if you can get hold of a copy of 'Train Your Gaze' by Roswell Angier. It's an excellent and practical guide to portrait photography. Camera angles tend to be gimmicky and looked tired very quickly. Besides, Cartier-Bresson was very scathing about them. The key to portrait photography is looking. In fact, that's the key to all photography. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Train-Your-Gaze-Theoretical-Introduction/dp/294037337X/ref=sr_1_1?s=booksie=UTF8qid=1300954052sr=1-1 B Thanks Paul. I think I must be different to differentiate myself from the comptetition. I do find errors in what I've done here, but I think I should keep looking for a while. Tim, I am in much the same boat as you (kind of scary considering your history). I enjoy doing portraiture, but I'm always trying to take pictures that others haven't done to death, so I think about these same things a lot. I am also always trying different angles to get something new and different. The challenge is that the reason that most of these angles are rarely used is because they rarely work. I keep trying them, and finding out why they aren't often used. I also try to do cool and creative lighting. Unfortunately, on my budget it's hard to come up with lighting that people with far more experience, and budget, haven't already done a lot of. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear/see them. It seems, to me, that the biggest opportunity for creativity is with props and backgrounds. Being short on money, time and creativity, my general expedient for the background is to not light it. The easiest way for me to not have anything ugly in the background is to leave it as close to black as possible. When that isn't an option, I like to use large towels (bath sheets) and a long lens, because towels come in all sorts of pretty colors that can complement people's skin and wardrobe, plus they're easy to store in the towel closet. With a shallow depth of field and the towel far enough back, nobody recognizes them for what they are. You just have to use a long lens so as to limit the field of view of the background. You've already discovered one trick, and that is to use a cliche format to set a mood. The movie star pose of the first shot works great, and it makes your friend look like a movie star, because those are the people we're used to seeing in photos like that. Another thing you can do is to have people bring a few things that represent what they do, or what they like. If someone likes to do woodwork, have them pose with a saw, or a plane. I find that I often get my best pictures when we get silly. One thing you could do is to have people play with their favorite toys from their childhood. When people are having fun, their smiles are genuine, and their happiness shows through. There are a lot of pictures of middle aged men in business suits, but not many of middle aged men in business suits playing with toy cars. Or of a 70 year old women holding her childhood teddy bear. And, of course, there is the option of taking a standard photo style, or angle, and using that for an entirely different type of photo, as one of your juxtaposed elements. I'm not telling you to do these exact things, I'm trying to give you some new directions to think in to come up with your own ideas for pictures that haven't already been done a lot. And, by the way, you've already done some great portraits. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

You will be fine Larry, as long as you stay away from tiny overlaoded boats. http://maritimtim.blogspot.com/2011/03/o-d-johnson.html I'm not aiming to invent a totally new direction in photography. But I'm looking for something that makes my pictures mine. My photo colleague takes a lot of near even light pictures of people floating araound at a blown out background. He is good at it, but it is very main stream. Yes, props is a good thing. Ole Dan is very found of his new watch. We used it as a prop, but alas the pictures where we involved it, didn''t turn out good. We also used his brand new fake leather jacket. That and his haircut was why i went for someting in James Dean direction. But for some reason (probably bad exposure) I didn't get much details in it. But it did set the mood. You may remember the pics of Redun Sunde, the cycle I used was hers, she is close to it, and people see her every day riding it. Which to keep: A Lens Priority Question
It's a simple question, and even more about reading people's thoughts regarding the lenses they would keep vs. part with. I have 2 zooms. #1 SMC Pentax-A 70-210/4. Quite nice, but awfully bulky. #2 Sears 202 75-300/4.5 A-type, reasonably sharp, not so heavy, longer Now at this time I'm keeping both. But if you were to part with one, which would you get rid of? The Sears isn't worth much, so it's worth more to keep. The A, on the other hand, is worth a bundle. But the bargain that I got it for makes it difficult to replace. Right now I'm thinking more about keeping both. The only time I'll need the 300 distance is if/when I go to a Cub game this summer. I'm also having a similar quandry in LF, but we won't go into that now. My general goal is to get rid of stuff. I'm 55 and it's time to thin down the toys. I'm trying to keep a few for the joy of living, but not those that are not in use. (Why keep it if I'm not using it? If it has value, sell it and get its value.) If anyone here will be in Dayton in May, that's what my son and I will be doing. Cleaning out the basement. (Dayton in May is a common euphemism for Hamvention.) Sell both and replace them with a $350 DA 55~300.(?) I quickly sold my A 70~210f/4 after receiving the DA 55~300. In doing so you will have satisfied your inventory reducing mood. Well, I could get about $125 for the A but only about $40-$50 for the Sears. (The Sears sell for much less than they are really worth. IIRC, they may be Kiron lenses. As good as a Tokina cheaper.) Your age is no excuse to reduce your equipment inventory. You'll realize that later, Collin. Sort of. I have re-acquired both 4x5 and 8x10. 2 lenses on each, but the long on 4x5 overlaps with the wide on 8x10. At least in that format I can get what they're really worth. The good stuff in LF rarely sells undervalued as it often does in 35/DSLR. (For those who appreciate good LF stuff, the 8x10 is just a 1923 Eastman 2D with its original BL Protar VII. Re: PESO - Portrait: O. D. Johnson
Tim - Being different for it's own sake is seldom if ever, a successful asthetic. The best portraits are where the personality and character of the one you are photographing is revealed in them without your style and personality getting in the way. I suspect you model (friend of yours?) liked the first one best because it is so theatrical and he saw himself how he would like to be seen... there is something very striking about it, but not quite real - almost a fantasy. but if you photographed everyone in that manner then we wouldn't know anything about them other than the superficial structure of their faces. ann Tim Øsleby wrote: Thanks Paul. My opinion and experience is appreciated. The modell told me he _really_ liked the first one. Maybe you have put words on why? I want to do something that makes me a slightly different portraitist. I think I must be different to differentiate myself from the comptetition. Part of that is your PoV: above looking down. For male subjects especially, I'd prefer eye-level or very slightly lower that eye-level looking up. Re: Which to keep: A Lens Priority Question
I tend to sell everything I'm not actively using. It reduces the decisions needed when I actually want to go do a photo shoot: I work with what I have. If what I need isn't what I have, enough times, I can always reacquire or buy a better one later. I use such long focal length lenses so infrequently it's more sensible for me to rent them when needed. On Thu, Mar 24, 2011 at 6:14 AM, Collin Brendemuehl coll...@brendemuehl.net wrote: It's a simple question, and even more about reading people's thoughts regarding the lenses they would keep vs. If it has value, sell it and get its value.) Jack Better if you can tone them down in the studio when you're setting up the lights. Less work, more easily repeatable. One thing you can try in Photoshop is to add a layer filled with 50% gray. Set the layer's Blend Mode to Overlay or Soft Light. Then paint on that 50% gray layer with Black or White brush set between 5% - 15% opacity (play around with this to find what works best for you). The Black brush will darken the underlying image similar to the burn tool without the color shift. It may be a cache problem at this point. Restart the computer and see if that cures it. Dan On Thu, Mar 24, 2011 at 4:14 PM, Bulent Celasun bulent.cela...@gmail.com wrote: Nope! Dan, Unfortunately, it is not a cache problem. I become a different user each time I try to login. Below is the message the site displayed a minute ago: www.pentaxphotogallery.com is currently very busy and can't respond to all requests or is undergoing maintenance. Please try again later. Thank you. They seem to be trying.
