Would be VERY interested in your observations, initial or otherwise. I will most likely having one in January. Well, at least I can talk about it now. My pusher got a couple of them in on Wednesday and immediately called me to tell me the news, and of course, I wend down and picked the thing up. Unfortunately, they jumped the gun, and weren't supposed to release them until today. I got a call from them that afternoon asking me to keep quiet about it because my camera was not officially released yet. Such is life. Anyway, the thing is really small. It is slightly taller than an MX, about the same width and significantly less thick. The build is solid, but not to the point of making the camera overly heavy. Robust is the best word I can come up with right now. The menus are typical Fuji, no surprises there, and coming from Pentax, very easy to understand. The camera is very customizable, including six (yes, you read that right) buttons that are customizable for function. All four buttons on the four way controller can be customized, as well as the Fn button (it defaults to WiFi, and is marked as such) and a button on the front, eerily placed like as if it is a depth of field button (and that is what I use it for). There is an instant movie button just to the right of the shutter, which I would prefer to be customizable as well since I don't use the video function often. Perhaps I'll start shooting internet porn and get more use from it, but that isn't likely. Fuji has dome a great job of placing the major functions onto buttons, so dumpster diving into the menus doesn't seem like something that will be all that necessary. There are a number of custom functions, so the camera can be set up to cover a variety of specialized scenarios, which the user can get to very quickly. On the subject of WiFi, the Fuji seems to be happier about it than the Pentax emulation. It is easier to get a connection, though with both systems, it seems very easy to drop the connection as well. The Fuji WiFi is definitely faster, and I prefer the interface with the Fuji. It's not that the Pentax is bad, but the Fuji definitely has an edge. I suspect they are close enough that someone else might very well prefer the Pentax version. The rear tilting screen is wonderful. It's something I have missed from the couple of PS digitals I have owned. In some ways I would still prefer a full articulating screen, but this, combined with the ability to use my smart phone as an external viewfinder will work well. The EVF is a very nice EVF. I like the size of it (it is quite lovely that way), and the image is very clean and bright. I don't think a person will have problems with viewfinder lag in general shooting situations, though if you are into motorsports or BIF images, it might be an issue. I have a K3 for those times, so it isn't a big deal. What is a big deal is the viewfinder. I am pretty much an EVF convert. I can still see where they can improve, but in this camera, it is definitely good enough. It is really nice to not be looking through an amputated viewfinder again. Regarding manual focus (this camera is definitely meant to be used as a full manual camera), the use has the choice of a plain screen with no focusing aids, a decent focus peaking in a variety of designer colours (the focus peaking on the Olympus OM-D is better), a digital split image, or an extreme magnification, looking at just the area the focus point is looking at. The focus point can be moved pretty much anywhere on the screen, though not right to the edges. The focus choice area is much larger than on the K3. The AF does seem to hunt a bit, but it is very quick. I am still figuring out what a few of the buttons are for. At some point I will need to read the owners manual. There are a couple of things in the menus that are more than a little inscrutable. So far, the only way to do a RAW conversion seems to be with the built in software. Adobe hasn't released an update for the camera yet. I suspect I will have to update Lightroom from version 4. Hopefully they will catch camera raw up soon. I miss Pentax's native DNG. Moving from camera to camera with Pentax has been very painless for the past few years because of their use of the DNG format. It's really a pity that more manufacturers don't get on board. The Fuji lenses are charming. They are very nicely built, and very, very good quality. Their lens coating isn't quite up to Pentax standards, but the glass is really sharp, and they have lots of aperture leaves. These lenses appear to be designed for bokeh. They have a lot of the three dimensionality that the older Pentax Limited lenses have (the 77mm comes to mind), but I do think they are slightly sharper, especially wide

Re: OT: Fuji X-T1
Bill - thanks so much for those words. I'd much rather read what you have to say than a Fuji fanboy, so cheers for that. The line about manual use interests me greatly. I'm using the A*85/1.4 and Voigtlander 15/4.5 on the X-E1 and manual focus is absolutely fine with that, especially with the 85mm. The form factor of the X-E1 and 2 don't ideally lend themselves to heavy glass on the front but I suspect the X-T1 with a battery grip will. I intend to lose the X-E1 in due course, pick up an X-T1 and an X100s and then start looking at the Fuji glassware. Haven't been this excited about gear since I got my first Pentax LX. That was a revelation, and a fond memory. Appetite duly whetted, thanks again. Cotty On 7/3/14, Bill, discombobulated, unleashed: Well, at least I can talk about it now. Re: K3 card failure
So I'm trying this again from gmail, hopefully it will be in Plain text mode. I experienced some unexpected card slot behavior in San Diego. I filled the 1st card and automatically moved to #2. Then I took #1 card out and downloaded it to the laptop. Card #2 took over, but when I replaced card #1, it stayed on #2. I had to fiddle with the menu settings to get it back to #1. I suspect the software transitions from #1 to #2, but has trouble going back to #1 automagically. Regards, Bob S. The Next Revolution?
In the past 35 years we got auto-focus sophisticated metering (that even compensates for snow), as well as digital. DSLRs and the mirrorless format seem firmly entrenched. I'm wondering ... what will be the next major innovation in photography? Or are we at a stand-still like the computer industry? Besides that, here's a jig I'd like to see: You know those rigs that move a DSLR to different angles to make multi-gigapixel landscapes? How about one for the back of an 8x10 or 11x14 camera that leaves the camera sitting still, focuses with the lens, then a motor moves the camera around the plane of focus? I'm mostly thinking about the improvement in rendering that comes from plasmats and copy lenses. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I'm getting a $2,000+ Tax refund from the State of NC because I overpaid state income taxes in 2010, 2011 2012. TurboTax doesn't correctly calculate income due to North Carolina's Bailey Settlement (most state federal government pensions are exempt from NC Income Tax where the taxpayer had a minimum of 5 years vested before August 1989). Because of the windfall, I won't have to dip into the money I've been saving for a Full Frame DSLR, so I'm thinking about maybe breaking down and getting the K3 even though it isn't full frame. I'll still have the money saved if Pentax ever does come out with a Full Frame DSLR. Haven't quite made up my mind yet, but I'm kind of leaning that way. RE: Save me from my desire...
Thanks. I think the M3 is possibly the perfect minimalist camera, and Leica have been trying to go to the dogs ever since, without ever quite getting there. What I would really, really like in a digital Leica is something with the exact dimensions of the M3 - the digital Ms are too fat - and weatherproofing, to protect the electronics. It should also be black and not have a red dot or any branding on the front, just a discreet engraving on the top plate. Apart from the 24x36 sensor, the M9 is too like the M8 for me. I want a 24x36 sensor, but if I buy another M it has to have at least 2 major points of difference (of the type I want) from the M8, so it would be the MM or the typ 240. I like the idea of the typ 240 because it is 24x36, weatherproofed, and for the video. I'd quite like to make a court metrage - a short movie - to help me in analysing films, but I'm not sure that that is something I would use a lot. I'm not expecting to discover that I've been a J-L Godard manqué after all these years - on verra. But I don't like the thumbrest or the wheel thing on the back - they spoil the aesthetics for me. I don't understand why Leica just don't do what I want. B -Original Message- From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Godfrey DiGiorgi Sent: 07 March 2014 04:25 To: PDML List Subject: Re: Save me from my desire... On Mar 6, 2014, at 3:37 PM, Bob W-PDML p...@web-options.com wrote: I am really interested in hearing everyone's thoughts about the MM as I haven't made up my mind yet. I might still spend it on a trip, and take pictures with the kit I already have. Hey Bob, I have the M9, as you're well aware. The MM is virtually the same, other than the specialized sensor. Several of my local friends from the Leica community have MMs, so I've had the opportunity to shoot with one a little bit and see their photos. Between the M9 and your M8, differences in use are trivial other than the larger format and some nuances of the controls and menus, you'll find it nearly the same experience. The MM's starkness is part of its endearing quality to me. There's little to distinguish it as a super special, fancy camera at all it's all just plain black, just functional bits, and nothing else. It's the antithesis of camera bling. Most people just glancing at it will see a camera that could be a forty year old lump. Of course, the specialized sensor is really the whole deal with the MM. From what I've seen based on their photos, there really is a substantive improvement in what you can get out of it at the limits for BW work compared to the M9 (or even M Type 240). Better tonal gradation, separation, acutance, etc. Certainly higher sensitivity, ameliorated somewhat by the need to use BW filters to push your tones around with different colors. Optimal exposure and processing the raw files takes slightly different techniques compared to the M9. Oh yes: one thing I've noticed is that the MM is an ideal body to work with all those lovely *older* RF lenses from the '30s, '40s, and '50s you know, all the ones that do weird things like color shifting and such with the M9. Some of those lenses were designed *long* before color film was popular and are best optimized for monochromethey sing on the MM. If you love shooting BW work and are willing to dedicate the money to a specialized body for that purpose, I think you would love it. Its use is very much that of shooting black and white film with a digital camera intentionally limited, constrained by a monochromatic capture. That's part of its genius: constraints breed creativity. I'd considered trading my M9 and some money for an M Monochrom myself, I'd dig it a lot, but I decided to go a different way entirely - Leica R lenses on the Sony A7 is a better fit for my predilections. Sometimes Time doesn't fly
I bumped my DA* 60-250 when I took a spill last August. It was in a soft lens case and there was no apparent damage, but the next time I used it the images were soft in places. Did a brick wall test and discovered that the focus field was no longer flat. Evidently, the elements had been knocked out of alignment. Sent it to CRIS. They told me it would have to go to Japan since they didn’t have the right tools to work on that lens. They said it would take about eight weeks. I told them that worked for me since I could get by without it until the auto show in January, at which point I would like to have it. It came back to me in December. I repeated the brick wall test, and while it was better, it was still a bit soft on the left side of the frame. Sent my test pics to CRIS. They said sent the lens back to us. I did; they tested as well and agreed with my finding. They then contacted Japan. Japan said it was within spec. I disagreed vehemently. With some help from Ricoh marketing, and pushing from CRIS, Japan agreed to replace the lens. And Ricoh marketing loaned by a 17-70 and 16-45 to tide me over. It took another eight weeks for Pentax to send the replacement. Today, it faintly arrived, almost exactly six months from the day I first sent the old lens in for repair. But I’m very appreciative of the help from Ricoh and CRIS, and I can’t really fault Pentax. They replaced a lens that had been damaged with a new one. Although I would think they should have been able to repair the old one satisfactorily. Seems the 16-50 is not only hard to assemble at the factory, it’s tough to repair as well. Tested the new one and set the fine focus adjustment. I'm now good to go. So I shot a clock. Enablement: K-01 (more of a camera than even I thought)
If you are paying attention (there WILL be a written test) you may know that I bought my wife a K-01 some time ago. My plan was to borrow it occasionally for astrophotography. She was mostly intimidated by it and seems to greatly prefer her iPhone. She sort of threw me for a loop when she asked if I would mind if we re-gifted it to her best friend who had been pining for one. Sure, hon! Bummer. So I have been desiring Focus Peaking ability and the K-01 was still my LOWEST cost way of getting that feature. So I found a body kit on Pentax Forums Marketplace with 1400 shutter count and it arrived today. It is a beaut. What I did NOT realize is that the K-01 (along with the K-30, apparently) has a very WEAK AA filter. K-01 has only 1 LPF (Low Pass Filter). Usually LPF consist of 3 layers (2 LPFs and 1 Wave Plate) but they omitted 1 LPF and Wave plate as a result it equips only 1 layer of LPF. Source: http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/138-pentax-k-01/181891-k-01-has-only-1-lpf.html See also: http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/138-pentax-k-01/205516-k01-have-similar-color-pattern-moire-k5-iis.html and http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/51305860 That is a bonus that I wasn't anticipating and should be a real plus for astrophotography. Re: Save me from my desire...
They don't do what I want either. I want them to take a Sony A7 sensor and viewfinder, put a better, smoother, quieter shutter in it, and set it up with the Leica R lens mount. Do they listen? NO! (Actually, the Sony is more flexible because I can fit M-mount, Nikon F, Leica R, and just about any other decent lens mount to it with an appropriate adapter. I just wish it was made and finished with the build quality of the Leicaflex SL.. It's a darn good digital version of that camera anyway. :-) I'd love a digital M as trim as my M4-2 as well, but it cannot happen, at least not with today's technology. Look at the Sony A7 and the sensor plane registration mark. That shows that with today's technology, you need about 12mm from the sensor plane to the back of the body to fit the sensor assembly and electronics that drive it. For film, you need about 3mm. So there's a 9-10mm minimum thickness gain for a Leica M since the lens mount has to go in front of the sensor plane with a 28mm registration. And if you measure it, that's about the difference in thickness between an M4-2 or M3 and an M8-M9-M(240). The M9 and MM are delightfully spartan with simple menus and simple controls. The MM has no red dot, no script on top, nothing. Its just there. Weatherproofing would be nice. The shutter and IO speed of the M(240) would be nice. If you want to do video, get an Olympus E-M1 … the five-axis IBIS is very useful for doing hand-held movie work. (It's too bad they didn't put in a 24fps capture speed, though; you have to transcode it after capture.) So many nice cameras out there these days. Sony, Pentax, Leica, Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic … Oh yeah, those Nikon and Canon things too. G On Mar 7, 2014, at 1:36 PM, Bob W p...@web-options.com wrote: Thanks. OT: Satellite photo of sediments after flooding
We had a one-in-a-hundred-year storm last week which caused a fair bit of flooding. It was exacerbated by changes in land and riverbed levels as a result of the earthquakes and I won't get started on the mess that's created with building, rebuilding and insurance in terms of flood risk. Instead, here's a pretty photo of the sediments being washed out to sea. http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=83299 My side of town had patches of surface flooding and the river at the back of our property was getting fairly close to our back doorstep.
