Thanks, Paul, Jack, Marco, Dan and Dave for the comments.

1400 m is the elevation of the hotel, hence the name. It was built in
1939, originally as a hospital, converted to a hotel in 1947, so your
observations about the institutional/austere look are correct.

Re: PESO: UNICORN

2014-07-31 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Attila.

The Unicorn was displayed on top of a car:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17822461

As I indicated, this was displayed in the Toyota area of the vender's
midway. This particular pink unicorn is currently featured in a TV
ad for Toyota; sn indulgent father is seen driving home with the
unicorn atop his car. He says that any father will understand what he
is doing with this enormous stuffed toy, but he also wonders where it
can be kept in their house.

The purpose of the pink unicorn is to draw young girls to see it, so
that the sales staff can give their parents information on the latest
offers on Toyota cars.

Re: Empire Parliamentary Delegation to Australia, 1926

2014-07-31 Thread John

On 7/29/2014 7:30 PM, David Mann wrote:

Darren's old photo find has finally spurred me into action...

Back in February I scanned a box of old glass slides (BW positives sandwiched
in glass) from the Empire Parliamentary Delegation to Australia in 1926. My
mother-in-law had asked me if I could do anything with them and I managed to rig
something up with my medium format film scanner (Minolta Multi Pro). The slides
are a strange size - about 83mm square with an image up to 70mm square (usually
masked with a border).

There are a handful of colour photos mixed in there which are not part of the
Australia collection; those are Dufaycolor slides which are fascinating under a
microscope but utterly horrible to scan. It looks like those ones were taken
in NZ.

I was wanting to put them online but with 72 files I wasn't really sure how
best to present them. In the end I've taken a lazy approach and thrown them
into a jAlbum gallery. The photos are presented in the order they were stored
in the box.

Note I haven't done anything about dust.

http://www.multi.net.nz/empire/

The photo captions are mostly what's written on the slides, except for the
number which is their position in the box. They might not be correct; being
handwritten and quite small they're difficult to read. A book accompanies the
slides but it's packed in a box somewhere. If it contains more info I'll
update the gallery.

Cheers,
Dave

They're fairly interesting, but I would have tried to group them
chronologically/geographically. The delegation appears to be bouncing
around back forth across the country.

And perhaps put all the color photos in their own gallery.

I've never owned a modern Pentax flash. When it came time to get one,
I looked at the power and features and went with the Metz 58 AF-1. I
think that has been supplanted by the AF-2 now, but it still gets very
decent reviews:

If you don't need that much power:

Different flashes depending on the situation. This page hasn't been
updated in a while, but ...

http://pttl.mattdm.org/

The AF200FG works remarkably well with the K10D K20D if you just want
fill are trying to balance the flash with ambient light.

I really haven't tried it with the K3 yet because the K3's built in
flash does a very good job, but I expect it should work as well with the
K5II as it does with the K10D K20D.

I also have the AF360FGZ and AF540FGZ.

I'm not as happy with the AF540FGZ as I feel I should be based on how
much it costs. I think there were production quality problems with the
early AF540FGZ. It didn't work as well as it should have even before I
dropped it.

When I talked to the Pentax Rep that time they brought the 645Z to my
local independent dealer, he said they're looking to establish a new
(additional) repair facility on the east coast. Once I find out where
that is going to be, I think I'll send my AF540FGZ in to be serviced.

I’ve had good success with the Pentax AF 540FGZ flash. I have two of them and
use them for everything, including outdoor fill at high-speed synch. The new
Pentax flash, AF540FGZ II is supposed to be better and well matched to the
newer Pentax DSLRs. Plus it’s weather resistant. I want one. But it is pricey.

I have both the Metz 58 and the Pentax AF540 and would pretty much
concur with the Amazon review from Darren's link. Both will tilt and
swivel, features that I prefer for better lighting.

The Pentax is a little quicker to use since you can make most changes
via buttons rather than spending time in menus. The secondary flash on
the Metz is very useful for a fill light and the Metz is upgradeable via
a USB cable.

Either one will serve you well. The Pentax *is* pricier by about $50.

Re: Flash for K-5IIs

2014-07-31 Thread Igor Roshchin

Dan,

I've been heavily relying on flash in what I photograph:
quick dances in a dark room, fill-in flash for my child indoors and
outdoors photos, some candid portraits in dynamic settings.

While I have only tried Pentax AF540 with K-7, I didn't like it,
and bought Metz 58 (not 2 yet), that I've been happily using ever
since, with both K-7 and K-5IIs.
IMHO, it works much better (but not universally perfectly, - so you have
to use it smartly).
I've been using it in two modes: either in A, where the flash decides
when to cut itself off, or in PTTL.
In most cases, I find that A mode works better, especially when
I turn the main flash up, and have the front fill-in sub-flash enabled.
I use PTTL often for forward-facing (typically longer-distance) shots.

Also, PTTL seems to work somewhat better at the very close range (1-3 feet),
maybe because camera's CPU is faster to cut off this powerhouse.

I agree, however, that the buttons of Pentax AF540 are more convenient
than the menues of Metz 58. Those menues are frustrating.
But I choose a better functionality.

Also, there were some problems (and I don't remember all the details),
that Pentax AF540 didn't not keep its settings upon power-cycling, and
it might not allow a manual mode. (Larry might still remember this part,
- he complained about that more recently.)

It looks like Metz 58-2 might have a better hotshoe mount, which is
welcome, as the one in Metz 58 is becoming a bit loose after a lot of
use, and may require occasional adjustment after insertion.

See my earlier response about Metz 58 in this thread:

The older and newer 340 and 540 are easy to set but they do not have an option
to remember the previous setting which is a minor nuisance. Not that big a deal
given the ease of string mode etc. I don't know about the older 540 but the
older 360 and both new Ii models have a manual option with various power
settings. They communicate well with K-5 and K-3 models.

Re: Pug Submissions

2014-07-31 Thread Brian Walters

Quoting John sesso...@earthlink.net:

I got another question. How do you guys submit the photos that are
larger than 800x600?

You can't.

Well, actually you can. But only as high as 800 x 800.

I see them in the PUG where it says click on the image to see the
original size, but it won't let me submit mine unless I shrink them
down.

What we have here is a terminology problem. In PUG terminology,
Original Size doesn't actually mean Original Size.

Let me explain how the PUG works.

Images are displayed in the gallery in a way that doesn't require
vertical scrolling of the image on most desktop monitors. So, any
image with a vertical dimension more than about 530 pixels gets
resized for display purposes.

As an example, an image of (say) 600 (h) x 800 (v) pixels will be
displayed in the gallery at about 398 x 530 pixels. In such cases the
Click Image to view at original size message will appear. When you
click that image it will display in a separate window at the full 600
x 800 pixels.

So, in PUG terminology original size means original size as submitted.

Suggestions as to better terminology most welcome...

it's something the sender has to do, and on by default in emails TB sends

on the receiving end, TB uses it to decide whether to reflow an email to

i doubt it is related to format=flowed, but you could try this in the config

  mailnews.display.disable_format_flowed_support = true

probably all that will happen will be that messages like this will display

Re: Flash for K-5IIs

2014-07-31 Thread Larry Colen
When my AF 540 died, I replaced it with a metz 58-2.

For just basic flash operations, it works a lot better. My AF-540 was an
unreliable piece of crap. Unreliable in that it kept breaking and unreliable in
that I could never rely on it to do what I told it to.

The UI of the Metz is not very good. The other problem with the Metz is that I
cannot figure out how to use it as a dumb optically triggered strobe. It’ll
work with the fancy ttl controls, at least in theory, I haven’t had much luck,
but when I want it on a stand, triggered off my studio lights, I seem to be SOL
and just need to get an external optical trigger.

I’ve been looking at the yongnuo and the Midwest photo strobes lately.

I have one since 1995 for the Leica R5 and still enjoying it.

OT: Sort of fascinated by what Sony has done with the a7s

2014-07-31 Thread Darren Addy
I'm not terribly interested in mirrorless cameras (although I have to
admit that I love that, thanks to the mirrorless design you can use
about any legacy lens on them (with the proper adapter). But after
reading a petapixel article on the a7s and its potentially being the
best astrophotography (low light) camera on the planet, I had to read
up on it.

From a marketing standpoint, what Sony has done appears to be a head
scratcher. From the article:

The Sony a7S is the third variation of the full-frame mirrorless a7
series of cameras that Sony has recently released. First Sony released
the 24.3 megapixel a7 and 36.4 megapixel a7R, the first mirrorless
cameras with full-frame 24mm x 36mm sensors. The recently released a7S
seems like sort of the oddball of the three a7 variations: It has only
a 12.2 megapixel sensor and at the time of this writing, it costs
almost $1000 more than the a7 and $200 more than the much higher
resolution a7R. But with that 12.2 megapixel sensor comes some
distinct advantages, especially for low-light photography and video.

12.2 Megapixels

With the a7S, it seems like you’re paying more for less. But even with
a sensor resolution that is a third the resolution of the cheaper a7R,
the a7S offers two things in return: sensitivity and 4K video (sort
of*). The A7s has larger pixels than pretty much any consumer level
full-frame digital camera. The larger pixel size means that each pixel
can collect physically more light. The more light per pixel, the
better the signal to noise ratio for that pixel and so that pixel will
more accurately detect the incoming light than a smaller pixel would.
This means that, all other things being equal, the A7s should be
capable of the best per pixel signal-to-noise ratio of any production
camera.

Can you imagine what the Pentax hoards would say if Pentax came out
with a full frame camera with fewer megapixels than the flagship? This
Sony camera is fewer megapixels than the PREVIOUS Pentax flagships:
the K-5, K-5ii/iis

That is really interesting. Frankly, I think it spells disaster from a
sales/marketing standpoint but I still find it intriguing that Sony
went forward with it.

To segue back into PentaxLand, it is clear that Pentax is going to
introduce a full frame (although still NOT at this coming Photokina).
What Pentax is telegraphing (or will at Photokina) is that they are
designing/developing full frame lenses again. I expect them to talk
about full frame more, even if they aren't showing a prototype.

The thing is that the time is right (the technology planets have
aligned) for Pentax to give its users a real choice: A 24.3MP APS-C
camera OR a 24.3MP full frame camera (for a lot more money). Sony
makes such a sensor and it is pretty awesome. It has also been out
long enough that Pentax may be able to buy it in 2014/15 at prices
that make the resulting camera sellable (unlike the Sony a7s at
$2500).

Check out this great comparison of a 24.3MP APS-C vs a 24.3MP full
frame and decide for yourself:

Watch the above video in HD and with fullscreen.

With other manufacturers making noise on moving in on Pentax medium
format land, a bang-for-the-buck full frame camera is nearly a
necessity. Pentax/Ricoh is making money on their Q line of cameras
(especially in the parts of the world that are not the U.S.) and that
is good for Pentax/Ricoh. I'm fairly convinced that Pentax will have
to say a bit about full frame at Photokina (but not want to freeze
sales of existing products) and will have a 24.3MP full frame
introduced in early 2015.

Or maybe I'm just Charlie Brown believing that Lucy is going to
actually hold the football for me to kick THIS TIME.

Oops. Forgot to link to the Petapixel article (for those that haven't seen it):
http://petapixel.com/2014/07/30/sony-a7s-astrophotography-review/

Sony manufactures the 12.2MP full frame chip. Frankly I think they HAD
to develop a camera for it because third parties aren't buying it and
their marketing departments want more MP from a full frame sensor.
Sony was forced to eat their own dogfood but that doesn't mean it
won't be a cracking good camera - if a bit pricey for my tastes.

Re: Flash for K-5IIs

2014-07-31 Thread Darren Addy
Crikey, Larry. Why use a $400 flash as a dumb optically triggered
slave? You can get old Vivitar 283/285s for that purpose and they are
a dime a dozen these days. Add a Vivitar Vari-Power Module (admittedly
getting harder to find) and you've got oodles of flexibility on an
optically fired slave.

When my AF 540 died, I replaced it with a metz 58-2.

For just basic flash operations, it works a lot better. My AF-540 was an
unreliable piece of crap. Unreliable in that it kept breaking and unreliable
in that I could never rely on it to do what I told it to.

The UI of the Metz is not very good. The other problem with the Metz is that
I cannot figure out how to use it as a dumb optically triggered strobe. It’ll
work with the fancy ttl controls, at least in theory, I haven’t had much
luck, but when I want it on a stand, triggered off my studio lights, I seem
to be SOL and just need to get an external optical trigger.

I’ve been looking at the yongnuo and the Midwest photo strobes lately.

The Pentax is a little quicker to use since you can make most changes
via buttons rather than spending time in menus. The secondary flash on
the Metz is very useful for a fill light and the Metz is upgradeable via
 a USB cable.

Either one will serve you well. The Pentax *is* pricier by about $50.
