Has anyone been getting any photos of Comet Lovejoy?
I'm not that happy with mine, but I managed twice from urban zones and cloudy nights. the bright sky makes it impossible to spot it with naked eyes and ruins color details, so I went for the moderate tele field, looking for the fuzzy green - then I switch to longer lens if the clouds allow it. way easier said than done. no tail so far - but from now on, things will improve as the Moon is past full, rising each night later and farther from the comet. I'm currently keeping an eye at weather, tripod/ camera/ outdoors tools at the ready. getting a proper picture requires dark sky at night - away from urban zones. first sighting: http://luizfelipe.fot.br/2010/base.php?foto=111 second, from a nearby town january 1st: http://luizfelipe.fot.br/2010/base.php?foto=112 -- luiz felipe luiz.felipe at luizfelipe.fot.br -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Interesting new ultra-MACRO (2:1) lens for Pentax
Some PDMLers might have read about this new lens before, but I just discovered and thought I'd share this information, as it might be of interest some people here. Re: Interesting new ultra-MACRO (2:1) lens for Pentax
There is one strange thing about the lens though: it’s compatible with both crop sensor and full frame DSLRs, but you can only use it for macro photography if you mount it to a full frame camera. Only APS-C cameras can use it for both macro and everyday photography. If this is true, it can't be used on the K-5 as claimed in the eBay listing, can it? Re: OT: Go Pro
I am resending my reply to Ken, as I received a warning from the server that my message was too long. For the whales and the surfers I rely mostly on my K-5 II S and the 70-300 zoom. I would use the GoPro more for filming the sail to and from the harbor and the views of the mountains and other islands we will be passing. If I take a flight to Kilauea on the Big Island, I would also use it aloft to capture the experience, although I would rely on my DSLR for images of the flowing lava. When the camera arrived, I ordered two high capacity high speed micro SD cards to use exclusively with the GoPro. They came yesterday, so I put one in the camera, charged the battery and took it with me in the car. As an experiment. I placed it on a non-skid tray on my dashboard and turned it on. I didn't even check the settings, let alone change any of them. I left it on during my drive home. When I got home, I placed the card in the adapter, stuck it in my MacAir, and clicked on what looked to be the appropriate file. It certainly exceeded my expectations. There was a lot of noise, but then, it was totally dark except for the street lights, stop lights, and taillights and headlights of other cars. I could easily read the road signs and the major landmarks on my way home, and it pretty much recorded the trip and did a much better job than any other video recorder I have used. I tried it in reverse on my way to work in the morning, but I haven't yet had an opportunity to check out the result. The K-5 is an APS-C camera, so the lens can be used for all its functions (macro and everyday). The confusion may be because of the wording of the announcement. Where it says: you can only use it for macro photography if you mount it to a full frame camera I would move the only to read: you can use it only for macro photography if you mount it to a full frame camera [i.e., not for normal-distance photography] The comments at PetaPixel explain why this might be the case. At infinity focus, the image circle likely covers only APS-C. Focusing at macro distances moves the lens forward, like using an extension tube, which enlarges the image circle sufficiently to cover full frame. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I think what he meant was: On APS-C you can use it as a macro lens or a normal lens On full-frame you can use it only as a macro lens This would be expected for a crop-format lens: At normal distances its image circle is only big enough to cover an APS-C sensor. La closer distances, where the lens is extended far from the focal plane, it will cover larger sensors. I'd never thought of it before, but this would apply to any macro lens that's designed for crop sensors. -- Mark Roberts - Photography Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Interesting new ultra-MACRO (2:1) lens for Pentax
Dan, why not? Yes it can. I don't understand what's the problem. As for Petapixel's comment, - it is strange by itself. Many lenses are compatible with both crop sensor and full frame DSLRs, but may have somewhat limited use on the full-frame cameras (smaller image circle, vignetting, ...) It's a similar situation here. And since Petapixel is just summarizing information from the manufacturer's website, I suspect they do not have much information of what is actually happening. The K-3: two months and a holiday later
It's two months now since I've got my K-3 together with the DA 18-135 mm lens and the Pentax flu-card. We're back from our two-weeks holiday in the North of France and here's a short report on things so far. On the way out, I've acquired the HD smc 55-300 mm, the smc DA 1.8/50 mm, and the smc DA 2.4/35 mm lenses at acfoto* in Aachen, Germany. Very nice and friendly staff and very well stocked with almost everything Pentax - including both 645s. The K-3 is far more of a progress over my former K-5 than I had expected. This goes for its picture quality as well as its handling. The autofocus has been substantially improved over that of the K-5, the shutter noise has been damped even further, and everything feels a little better and more responsive. The flu-card is great for having a closer look at photos just taken, on the iPad. Far better than the camera's display. Just a few pros and cons in no particular order: + the diopter control that used to be a real PITA is at last easy to operate + the autofocus is faster and more reliable, especially in low light - the switching between normal exposure and bracketing has become more complicated - bracketing in M-mode with chipped lenses still varies time *and* aperture unless you find the one setting deep down in the menu to stop this nonsense - no fault of the camera, but the larger files put such a burden on my trusted old Macbook Pro that it's getting painfully slow with the K-3 files in Lightroom. Way more than I had expected. I have already published first impressions and a few shots with the four new lenses, on this list. My trusted old M 2/35 mm, M 1.4/50mm, the 4.5/80-200 mm, the DA 50 - 200 mm lenses, and my hefty Pentacon 4/300 mm lens have all been retired because the new glass is at least as good or better. Altogether well over three kilograms of glassware. One more positive side effect: with all the newly bought DA lenses I'll be a lot less tempted by any new Pentax FF body. :-) Ralf *) www.acfoto.de -- Ralf R. Re: Interesting new ultra-MACRO (2:1) lens for Pentax
That is interesting. I am trying to grok why it would not work at infinity on a full frame camera. I assume it must be vignetting though typically vignetting would be more pronounced at full extension (i.e. in macro mode) and not at infinity. There would be no reason I can think of as to why the parts of the frame that work on an APS-C sensor would not also be good on a full frame sensor. Maybe I'm missing something, but to photograph a whole 35mm slide on an APS-C sensor, you need less than 1:1 magnification, so any lens that goes to 1:1 would suffice without extension tubes. You don't need a lens that goes to 2:1. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PESO: Oxford Circus
Really conveys a sense of motion and a busy downtown street corner. I find the colour noise jarring where it appears inconsistently, like on the girl's face and parts of the building walls, upper-right. Pinterest is trying hard to make themselves relevant to business and retailers, but their own architecture works against them. I use Pinterest purely for my own purposes, as a handy mood board and place to manage inspirational images, but I've unintentionally accumulated a few followers and viewers there. Re: Replacement Lens hood for FA 20-35mm
On 1/4/2015 11:35 PM, P.J. Alling wrote: So on my search for a suitable replacement for the broken lens hood for my FA 20-35mm I have discovered two, no, three things, apparently there's a vendor in England who've pretty much cornered the market on replacements of older Pentax lens hoods, that some venders can't be bothered to take photos of their products being used properly. (See my post What's wrong with this picture), and BH Photo has them in stock for, gasp, $58.00 which seems a bit excessive for some extruded plastic, no matter how high the quality. So the question is does anyone know of a reasonable substitute? I at first thought that the RBC 58 for the FA 28-105mm might be a better match for the APS-C sensor cameras, but they seem to be in even shorter supply than the original lens hood, and who knows if the bayonet is even compatible. A good third party hood would be more than fine at this point, I really don't want to spend almost 1/5th the amount on a new hood that I paid for the lens when it was new. I went through much the same thing when I broke the hood on my Tokina 28-70. BH listed a replacement, but it was not in stock likely never would be. I finally found a replacement by stopping in at every independent camera store I encountered asking if they had a box of old hoods around and if so, could I paw through it to see if the one I needed might be in there. -- Science - Questions we may never find answers for. Re: Interesting new ultra-MACRO (2:1) lens for Pentax
Mark C wrote: That is interesting. I am trying to grok why it would not work at infinity on a full frame camera. I assume it must be vignetting though typically vignetting would be more pronounced at full extension (i.e. in macro mode) and not at infinity. Not vignetting but light falloff. The lens produces an image sized for an APS-C sensor... in general use. But for close focusing the lens is extended farther away from the image plane (sensor) and thus projects its image over a larger area. Large enough for a full-frame sensor. -- Mark Roberts - Photography Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

OK if you have a FF camera, you can get 1:1 reproduction with a macro lens without the need for extension tubes. Would this lens potentially be the way forward for this task? Apart from speeding up the process, I would have the benefit of putting a decent size RAW file of the image to put into Lightroom or wherever and I wonder if it would capture more information of the image than an older scanner would? I expect you've all converted your slides years ago, but to me this is still a hot topic! Re: PESO: Christmas Lily
Nice flower, is it blooming outside? I think it's related to my Amaryllis: https://500px.com/photo/93540127/amaryllis-by-attila-boros but mine might be a hybrid, barely has any scent.
