Thanks to everyone who looked/commented. Feedback greatly appreciated. There are lots similar towns in rural areas of Australia, often associated with abandoned railway systems. Re: Grandfather Mountain 2015
I don't know if last year sold out or not, but best bet is to figure on a couple of hours. Last year I registered at about 2 minutes after it finally opened up my number was up around 100 (out of I think 164 spaces). If I don't get a confirmed space, I get 'em to put me on the waiting list. The two times I've had to do that, I eventually got in. I think it used to be done by telephone at midnight until the last several years when they switched to on-line registration. They tried to get that live at midnight, but for some reason the servers just wouldn't cooperate. You couldn't get registered until somebody came to work in the morning to straighten on-line registration problems out. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who suggested that if their internet support staff wouldn't come in special to fix registration problems at midnight they should just delay the start of registration until the staff got to work in the morning. Looks like that's what they're doing this year. On 3/22/2015 5:35 PM, Tom Reese wrote: thanks for the heads up. This event used to sell out in a couple hours. RE: What does everyone now use?
I've been fascinated by the replies. I appreciate the question has been asked before, but it's good to see where people are in March 2015. One of the subjects that came up here time and again, and caused me considerable concern in the months before the *ist D was launched, was how technology was going to render new DSLRs obsolete within months of them coming out, they would lose all their value and/or they would break down or be unreliable and expensive to repair. Yet I look through your replies and see that whilst technology has indeed moved on at a considerable pace, the older DSLRs are still useful and regularly used cameras. My oldest DSLR is my K7, yet it doesn't feel outdated in any way. Values of older DSLRs have dropped, but they haven't become the worthless pieces of scrap I feared they may have been only a few years after they were new on the shelf. Also interesting to note is how many folk still have a Pentax somewhere in the line up (if not the only camera), and how other formats and camera designs are popular - and what excellent results they produce. And of course...film is still not dead! Or is it the idea that it is always raining here therefore grey skies? Out of interest spent a few minutes looking to see where the UK is in the globla scale of rainfall and according to this web site we rank 48th out of 95 in annual rainfall totals (the USA being 25th) although regional variation isn't obviously taken into account. There are places in the UK where it does rain a LOT - eg in the mountains of north Wales and Scotland. http://www.nationmaster.com/country-info/stats/Geography/Precipitation And here is a map showing totals in translated colours: http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/AG.LND.PRCP.MM/countries/1W?display=map As a bit of background the UK is a small island nation and the weather is predominantly dictated by the Atlantic ocean, with pressure systems flowing from a generally westerly direction more or less along the north Atlantic jet stream. This means we get a fair few low pressure systems with associated warm and cold fronts, and their associated rain. They usually skip through quite quickly and within a few hours. Because we sit usually near the 'border' with cold Polar air to the north and warmer air to the south, we often find big temperature variations within the space of a few days. Hence the saying in Britain we don't have a climate, we have weather. But to be fair, cloud cover is not something I think about a lot as some days are cloudy and some days are sunny. I find the variation is good and unless we get stuck under a winter high pressure that drags in freezing easterly winds from Siberia, it's all fine! As long as a DSLR still functions it won't loose all value, but it may become impossible to monetize that value. It's interesting in a way that a thing can be technically obsolete without being functionally obsolete. Because I own one, I've done a little research into the Kodak medalist, and it's successor the Chevron, the Medalist was technically obsolete when the Chevron it's nominal replacement was introduced. The Medalist was still just as capable of taking excellent photographs as before, and in many ways was a superior piece of equipment, Cheverons have not aged well, especially since the sported an advanced leaf shutter boasting a maximum, and at the time unheard of, shutter speed of 1/800. Unfortunately those shutters were prone to catastrophic failure if a second set of shutter blades that made that astonishing shutter speed possible were not absolutely free of contamination. As an aside Kodak tended to reuse names, Medalist was used on three entirely different format still film Cameras, a line of BW photo paper, and a line of slide projectors. Re: Where is everyone?
I stumbled into the pdml, probably thru the Pentax website. There was some overlap with 'the who' (who I never understood) and many flame wars, which I participated in and even prolonged in many cases. Bill Robb became a special friend as he refused to suffer fools in silence, or intolerant remarks. But it was a friendly place where folks answered my dumb questions and knew Pentax cameras. I found the PUG was a monthly challenge to improve my photography and think we need more of it. Regards, Bob S. A friend of mine bought a restorable Porsche 911 when we were in high school together, for years it was slowly sinking into his mothers back yard. When he got married it was moved into the unfinished portion of the barn he and his wife bought to convert into a house, where it sat until just a few years ago. Bill Robb became a special friend as he refused to suffer fools in silence, or intolerant remarks. I think I arrived a bit too late to have experienced the who and the other fruitcakes. Re: OT 2015 Macbook - Engineer's perspective
Amazing how many people don't get that this is a repurposed video for comedy purposes (used over and over again for things people want to make fun of). That isn't to say that I think the new MacBook is a great idea (for me, at least). Any device that doesn't have replaceable batteries is being made to be disposable. Dell has taken to doing this in some of their air laptops as well, so it isn't an exclusively Apple problem. (Probably other manufacturers too.) It is the built-in obsolescence that I object to. Frankly, the thinner lighter thing isn't the most important to me if it requires throwing it in the trash in 3 years. The single multi-port is a solution without a problem, although I'm sure it reduces the bill of materials cost (negligibly). That's quite interesting. Last time I went to Ethiopia I travelled south on a clapped-out old bus and sat next to a Rastafarian who was on his way to Jamaica, near Shashemene, which is the parcel of land Haile Selassie gave to the rastas. We stopped for a break halfway and had some fried things at the roadside, which the rasta said were Johnny cakes, and were apparently the exact same thing as in Jamaica, West Indies. He claimed that they were 'journey' cakes because you eat them at halts on a journey. I have no idea whether that's true or not. B On 22 Mar 2015, at 20:27, P.J. Re: Save the date! I got me a show, after 7 year hiatus APRIL 4
That's the story I've always heard. They're kind of a New England delicacy, I'm not sure whether they made their way to places like Jamaica from here or the corn meal from here got to those places and the idea of frying it up as Cakes returned from there. The place in New England where it's still popular as a regional cuisine is Southern R.I. The people i know who actually like them put so much maple syrup on them that it's hard to tell what they were originally made of. I'm pretty sure that modern recipes have some kind of leavening agent in them, but the original colonial Johny Cakes were pretty much just Cornmeal and water, fried in fat. Grits are pretty much Cornmeal and water brought to a boil then simmered until... well until they're edible. On 3/22/2015 4:39 PM, Bob W-PDML wrote: That's quite interesting.
