If you get a copy of Paprika, which is probably one of the best apps ever
written, certainly one of my most-used, you don't need to take photos of the
recipe pages, you can generally download them in the blink of an eye, and
follow them while you cook as the screen will stay on.
https://www.paprikaapp.com/

Here's what your chicken recipe looks like in the iPad version:
https://1drv.ms/u/s!AtRNY5M6IZ1DjdgXv6NMo15Xnw4dRw

It also does shopping lists, meal plans etc. And you can make notes about the
recipes. A really well-designed bit of software - not something I say very
often after 40 years in software development.

I think we spell it 'cack', as in cack-handed, which is derived from using your
left (and usually clumsier) hand for cleaning up at the back. Also why it's
considered impolite in many cultures to eat with your left hand.

Re: Capital Ring

2019-11-18 Thread Bob Pdml
Thanks Rick. Not so sure I'd call it countryside though. Richmond Park is an
ancient royal hunting ground, and Wimbledon Park formerly belonged to the
Spencers and was landscaped by Capability Brown. The long views from above were
shot from King Henry's Mound, which dates back to the neolithic times and was
originally a burial mound, so the landscape has been populated and altered by
humans for thousands of years.

6, from Wimbledon to Richmond, followed by a nice pub lunch.

Re: Paris

2019-11-13 Thread Bob Pdml
Thanks.

She looks mighty yar - I look forward to comin' aboard and splicing the
mainbrace sometime, me hearty!

Although I could retire now I want to sell my house first and do it all at
once. I put it on the market earlier this year, but took it off again. I'll put
it up for sale again in the New Year and hopefully it will sell. I've moved
away from the idea of living in Paris to having a place over here on the South
coast and a place in Avignon, and splitting my time between them. The place in
France will have to wait until the exchange rate has improved though. Living in
Paris would not be different enough from living in London, and the pollution is
worse, although I really like being there and want to spend more time there.
Avignon is superb, ticks all my boxes.

Heave away! Haul away!

On the Pont des Arts they have replaced the lovely metalwork with glass/perspex
panels after part of the bridge fell (or was it pushed?) into the river under
the weight. On one of the other bridges they use metal rods, which the
authorities regularly remove and then slide all the locks into a big bucket.

Spent the weekend in Paris with some friends at a flat in the Gobelins district
which one of them had borrowed. Had a view of part of the Eiffel Tower and the

They're not photography friends, so the pictures were taken in a rush, and in
mainly touristy spots because two of the people are not very familiar with
Paris. One photo thing I did manage to do was visit the excellent HCB in China

A cat

2019-10-31 Thread Bob Pdml
I'm not really a cat photo person, but it is Halloween and this presented
itself as an opportunity for me to see how my Olympus E-M1 would be with the
four-thirds converter and the Oly 50-200/3.5 lens. That's the equivalent of
400/3.5 in old money. The shot is handheld, wide open at 1/1000sec. Not bad.

Thanks. I like the compositional balance. The post on the right balances the
seated guy, and the top right cloud balances the upright of the groyne in the
lower left corner. There is even spacing between them all, and that very strong
diagonal which continues to the point where the sea meets the sky, so I can't
see any way to change it without knocking it off balance, to my mind.

I follow Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb on Instagram, watching photos posted

There's something miraculous and mysterious about Webb's photographs and the

That's interesting - I have exactly that same musette. Bought it a few years
ago with some of their other pieces. Cost me a shit-ton of money to ship it
over here. I like the design of the bag but I don't much like the waxed canvas,
so I don't use it much. Although I will be carrying a couple of changes of
clothes to Paris in it in two weeks.

I use an even simpler musette:
https://restrap.co.uk/products/musette-bag-1

I only put cameras in it if I'm going a short distance. Mostly I use it for my
commute - change of clothes, stuff it in my saddlebag. On the way home pick up
some shopping, put the shopping in the saddlebag, sling the musette over my
back for the last mile.

To carry cameras on the bike I use a bar bag. Most recently it's been a Gilles
Berthoud GB905, into which a Tenba BYOB 9 insert fits perfectly, and into that
I put my Olympus E-M1 + 14-40/2.8 and everything seems to be fine re vibration
and shock, and the bike handling is fine.

That's what the bike is for!! I can see the appeal though, the VW camper /
surfing vibe.

Having said that, Chris M and I have talked about doing a ride across France
with Karin and their caravan as the back-up vehicle. Most of my trips across
France use the train and/or ferry to get to the start. A very civilised way of
travelling.

Can't get to the talk, but the book looks interesting, thanks, particularly as
it also covers humanitarian and aid work, which is quite rarely discussed in
photography.

Dennis Stock's California Trip

2019-09-21 Thread Bob Pdml
Has recently been re-issued for the first time since 1970, so I bought a copy.
I've been familiar with many of the pictures for decades, of course, but had
never seen the book. It is a brilliant example of photo book editing. The
individual photos are great, some of them classics, but the way they work
together is excellent, often having a very witty and subtle echo across the
double-page spreads. Well worth buying.

Re: RIP Robert Frank @ 94 - GDG

2019-09-10 Thread Bob Pdml
I'm a big fan of The Americans, and just saw the announcement on Magnum's
Instagram feed.

People do give a great deal of credit for the success of The Americans as a
work in its own right as an object rather than just a collection of photos to
Robert Delpire, who did the layout and the first publication, in France.

I'd love to see the contact sheets.

An interesting article here which no doubt applies equally to the situation in

Populism is about manipulation, not about majorities. Neither Trump nor Johnson

Re: OT: British House of Cards (a bit political

2019-09-09 Thread Bob Pdml
They do still have quite a way to go before you can call them the worst. After
all, Hitler was elected to office.

Nevertheless, one of the few heartening things about all this is that quite a
few Tories are able to put the country before their personal ambition,
including Boris's own brother, and in that respect they are still fractionally
ahead of the Republicans, whose apparently only honourable member, McCain, is
no longer with us.

I think, or rather hope, that the outcomes of all this will include a written
constitution and the end such things as the royal prerogative (which in
practice amounts to the PM having carte blanche), so that proroguing parliament
can only be done with the consent of the House of Commons.

Get yourself a lycra nappy!

Bromptons aren't good on pot-holes - small wheels.

The saddle, assuming it's a Brooks, is supposed to be like a hammock supporting
the ischial tuberosities, with no pressure on the perineum (which is the road
to Numh Qoc) and definitely no parting of the butt-cheeks! It still takes time
to get used to being on a bike for some length of time, and padded cycling
shorts - preferably bib shorts - are definitely worthwhile.

It's a beautiful area for cycle touring. I rode up to Shaftesbury a few years
ago, but by the main road, not Gold Hill. Shaftesbury's a nice town.

I'm not around when you're over here - in fact, I plan to be cycling to a

Brighton through the S Downs before taking the train home from Brighton.

surprisingly, make an adapter, the one you mention, so I have ordered one from
Amazon. I have the 11-22, 14-54 and 50-200 lenses so it will be interesting to
see how they do, particularly the 50-200, which is the only one outside the
range of the lens I bought with the body today.

I also discovered the Novoflex for Leica M mount, which seems like the best
option, but I'll hold off getting it until I've played with the rest of the
stuff. It could be valuable to have it for my Leica 50/2, Voigtlander 75/1.8
and L 90/2.8 to extend the focal lengths available to me. With the shorter
lenses, particularly the L 35/1.4 it would be nice to see the thin dof. But
when I first switched to digital and used my beautiful Contax lenses with
adapters I learned how much can be lost in translation, so I won't rush to buy
a Novoflex, but will see if I can try one out first. I see Voigtlander also do
an M-MFT adapter which seems to be well thought of, so I'll also consider one
of those.

190 options is way too many for me. I know what I like, and I try to keep it
simple, so I've already read the manual and set up the camera; I'll have a play
with it tomorrow. Not a bad idea to write it down though.

Cheers,
B

Thanks. That's made of aluminium, which isn't a good match with steel... not on
bicycles, anyway, and I don't want to be smearing copper grease on my bayonet
before I mount. I read somewhere that the aluminium ones leave microscopic
splinters in the lens mouth, and I think I'd rather not take the risk.

OT: Micro 4/3rds adapters

2019-08-31 Thread Bob Pdml
...which is the best make?

I had a small windfall, so I have bought me an Olympus E-M1 II + 12-40/2.8 lens
to take cycling with me, replacing the Fuji X20 that is becoming increasingly
difficult to peer through.

I have already an Olympus E-3, which I haven't used for years, and a set of
very good lenses, so I will probably buy the official Olympus adapter for
those, if there is such a thing.

I would also like to put my Leica and Voigtlander M-mount lenses on, and I have
a couple of Pentax lenses too, so why not?

There seems to be no end of presumably Chinese-made adapters out there, but I
have no idea if any of them are any good. So if those of you who engage in
body-glass promiscuity of this persuasion could give me some tips I'd be very
grateful.

Your wish is my command (I think). This should be full size, or as large as LR
will render:
https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B0I532ODWGrCKVN

The appeal of the scene to me, in addition to the intrinsic weirdness, is the
compositional similarity to Dutch landscape paintings, so detail is of lesser
importance, but a large-scale painting would of course reveal detail, though
not in photographic resolution.

I shot it with my Fuji X20, handheld, so it's not of plate-camera quality...

The Dark Ages? Isn't that what they called it when this island was isolated

The painter Hogarth famously had a pug - it features in a statue in Chiswick,
London, where they lived.

The pug's name was Trump.

I have more than one.

Opinion, that is.

4 October this year won't be a problem as we're not due to close down until 31
October. I don't think next year will be a problem either as by then we will
have become one of the United States Minor Outlying Islands, so you won't even
need a passport.

Thanks to all who commented.

The unkemptness of the cemetery is artfully maintained. It's very popular and
well looked-after, even though you have to pay an entrance fee these days.

While I was there with a pal who visiting the cemetery for the first time we
met a young man who asked us to take his picture as he introduced his week-old
son to the grave of his best friend who died young a few years ago. It was
quite touching.
