Re: Pentax 18-250 - stuck in the "locked" zoomed out position

2022-08-26 Thread Igor PDML-StR

A delayed follow-up:

The rubber grip is not glued, and it was much easier to pull it up and
fold a half of it over the rest than I was expecting.

Tightening the screw fixed the issue completely.

It took 2-3 minutes once I had the lens and the right tools (a bamboo
splint and a very small Phillips screwdriver) at the same location,

and the courage to do it. :-)

Sudden problem with the viewing adjustments in LightRoom - any ideas?

2022-07-02 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi All!

All of a sudden, I started having a problem in the old LightRoom (v5.x)
on Windows (10):
Any adjustments I make are not shown on the photograph shown in the middle
of LR workspace. Also, it doesn't show any changes in the preview panel
for sharpening and noise reduction (under "Detail").
Also, sometimes, if I am making image adjustments, LR stops showing the
active image at all, with only the grey frame as a place holder.

I have already tried to move away Lightroom 5 Preferences.agprefs file
in C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Preferences
thus allowing LR to regenerate it with the default settings. That did not
help.

Here are the things that have happened since everything worked just fine:
1. Computer crashed during a power outage. I do not remember if LR was
running at that point or not.

2. Windows 10 update was installed.

And the first symptoms were that LR was not showing on the imported photos
that a smart preview was active.

Also, sometimes, it was not showing

So, I've created a new catalog, removed the preference files, - and
the smart previews started working again.
But the changes are still not shown on the photos or in the side panel
"Details" - for sharpening and noise control.
Also, sometimes it shows just the gray frame instead of the photo. I have
to move to a different photo and come back to load the image.

I am torn between two possible reasons: something got damages in the
installation, and I should reinstall, or, something changed in the Windows
libraries/API, and that prevents LR from showing the images properly.

Has anybody heard about this type of problems?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Igor

Re: GESO: April Flowers

2022-04-27 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Dan,

Lovely flowers well captured!
The spring, indeed brought many wonderful colors, - very inspiring!

The very first one, "Dogwood Buds" has the most unusual point of view (to
me), and hence the overall look.

It is different for different people, - but for my taste, in some cases, -
I would consider framing with just a bit more space around the "main
subject", - so that the flower (on inflorescence) is not filling up the
entire frame.
From taking photos of similar subjects, I know that it is often difficult

to do that while not crowding the image. It might still be worth trying.

Cheers,

Igor

PESO - Red Maple

2022-04-27 Thread Igor PDML-StR

That's a lovely photo, Rick!
I like how those pink "helos" contrast with the green.

I would consider playing with one thing - to further separate the in-focus
leaves in the middle from the OOF background: to slightly sharpen the
edges (while setting the sharpening mask to a sufficiently high value so
that only the edges get sharpened). - That's a handy trick I've learned
long time ago from someone on this list (IIRC).

Cheers,
Igor

Re: Interesting artifact

2022-04-24 Thread Igor PDML-StR

As far as I understand how (sensor-based) shake reduction works is that
the sensor is moved to compensate for the motion of the camera - but only
for the object that are in the focal plane (or close to it).
Things that are closer or farther also benefit from that, but to a lesser
degree.

That place has no fence or anything behind. It has the rest of the tree
behind: I was shooting somewhat against the light. I do not think this
aperture images are due to multiple light sources from the back.

I do not have a complete picture (in my head) of how the aperture images
show up in this case, and, especially why they are all aligned along one
straight [!] line. I suspect that they might be due to a reflection from
the sensor.
In that case, I could imagine how the sensor motion alone one line (around
one axis) could create multiple aperture images.

If it was due to SR then you would get all sorts of linear blur all over
the place.

I would guess that part of what ever was mostly blocking the light was
pretty much a straight boundary, like a fence or a tree trunk.

Going back, I’d say holes in a fence. No way would shake reduction make
that much of a blur.

Were those taken someplace you could go back to? Do you have any other

I suspect that if you had stopped the camera down you would see points of

I think it’s just standard bokeh of point light sources in the background,

Re: Big problem in lightroom classic

2022-02-14 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi Larry,

Could it be that LR does not handle properly the expansion of "~" as the
home directory? (E.g. you need to surround it with quotation marks, or
something like that?)

Sorry, it was rather difficult to understand the step you were doing while
moving the directories - from your initial posting and from the support
ticket you filed with Adobe, but I think I've finally understood it from
your latest response to Godfrey.

I agree it is a weird behavior of LR.

I also had a big problem with LR and file systems: LR (on Windows) refused
to have its database (catalog) on the Windows network share. At least,
that was the case with LR 3.x. That prevented me from being able to work
with the same LR database conveniently from two computers (laptop that
went with me everywhere and a more powerful desktop that also had PS
installed on it), with the files sitting on the local file-server.

The only viable solution for that required using an external HDD.

I don't know if LR on Mac allowed the catalog on an NFS-mounted partition.

I actually wonder if the limitations I described might be the reason for
how LR on Mac works with the softlinks to the directory.

Good luck!

Igor

I can move files from there to my archive drive without problems.

Lightroom breaks on symbolic links.

Re: OT Epson scanner replacement

2022-01-27 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Indeed! :-)
And that reminded me the classics, - Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels
(1726) where the Big-Endians are fighting with Little-Endians.
(For those who doesn't remember that story from the childhood, - see the
link at the bottom of this message.)

The irony is that that story has a direct relevance to the arguments of
PC/Linux vs. Mac. There is sort of a historic loop closure (which is
almost 300 years long now).
For those people on this list who don't know, the terms "big-endian" and
"little-endian" describe how numbers are stored (and processed) in the
binary representation in the computers (tail-first or head-first, crudely
speaking).
Ironically, IBM PC's are running on little-endian CPUs (Intel), while Macs
in 1980s were running on Motorola's 68k CPUs, which were big-endian.
So, the Mac-vs-PC war has been the war between Big-Endians and
Little-Endians.

:-

And a little be deeper, - which makes it even more relevant to PDML:
This "big" mess has a big implication for all images (today's "digital
photos"): Images should be read on any platform. More over, in different
image formats the endianness can be different.
So, the software needs to recognize the kind, and reverse the order
if needed.
E.g. TIFFs can be of either type and that is marked by the "signature" at
the beginning of the file, which is by itself is a palindrom: "II" or
"MM", so they are endianness-independent.
In contrast, AFAIR, in JPEGs the image portion is big-endian, but exif
notes can be either (or something like that).

For the history of naming that includes the relevant (and ever-actual)
passage from Swift's book, see e.g.
https://www.ling.upenn.edu/courses/Spring_2003/ling538/Lecnotes/ADfn1.htm

Cheers,
Igor

Re: Ricoh direct marketing cue wailing and moaning and gnashing of teeth

2022-01-21 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Rick,
It's been close to 20 years since I've looked at a Pentax camera or lens
at a brick-and-mortar store in the US.

(That was at Adorama in 2001).

So, all 4 Pentax DSLRs I've owned (and a bunch of Pentax lenses) were
purchased by mail, - mostly from B and Adorama.

With the proposed change (if I understand it correctly), Pentax
products might no longer be available through B, Adorama (and
Amazon).
The decrease in the number of channels lowers the competition, and that
drives the prices up. If Ricoh own outlets will be the only source, there
will be no big Black Friday/Cyber-Monday sales from B/Adorama, as those
in several pre-pandemic years.

But, as Bill wrote, - Ricoh needs to change something to revive the brand.
The time will tell if they bet on the right horse.

Thank you, Mark!

For this pano, I had a set of 13 shots, but I don't remember if I skipped
some of them (in the middle) - for simplicity.

I was using an old Bogen/Manfrotto 3433 (aka 501) video tripod head (with

the stepping (and overlap control) was done manually.

Hi All,

Well, I've done it, - a panoramic photo that I don't know how to present.
This is the largest ever (pixel-wise) pano, as it was the first time I
couldn't save it as JPEG because of the pixel size limit for JPEG.

Somewhere online, I've found references that JPEG couldn't be larger than
some 65,xxx pixels in any direction. (It is probably less than 2^16-1=65536-1
= 65535, which is 2 bytes)
But that seems to be incorrect (or maybe it is an additional limitation
imposed by the software?). I couldn't save as JPEG even the image that was
less than 32765 px.

I was able to save as Jpeg only when I took that number down to about 16,000.

Grand Teton.

2022-01-19 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Thank you Rob, Dan, Ann, Subash and everybody else for looking and
commenting!

(and to Subash for helping Ann finding the link in my lengthy message.)

Rob, to answer your question:
I used PS for stitching.
It was based on 13 individual shots (unless I skipped some
intermediate ones in the process - due to an excessive overlap).
I could save a tiff with 32765 on a side, but had to reduce the pixel
count to about 16000 for the largest jpeg (not shown here).
Now, I wonder if something like 64000x8000px could have worked
for the TIFF.

In any case, I have no need for those huge pixel numbers - as I am not
printing that pano... The question was purely "academic".

Thinking of which, - it could be cool to have a photo wall paper. :-)
I just need a large enough wall and wallet to cover...
:-)))

Thanks for sharing the pointer to Gigapan.
And your image there is great!
As an aside, the navigation and search there are broken.
E.g. searching for your name doesn't bring your profile or this photo.
And, I cannot get to your panorama from your profile page.

Cheers,

Igor

I did see that original post re-hosting panoramic images but forgot to

the most practical option I found was the Gigapan site. It's a little

it does still work, I put four images up about 5 years back and they
still appear to be accessible.

cameraphobia and terrorism?

2021-10-12 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Some of you might have heard about this incident - it's been on the
national news.
But just in case you didn't hear what was the culprit, - that was a
"vintage" style camera and human stupidity.

I am quoting this article from PetaPixel:

"The incident reportedly occurred after a woman spotted a fellow passenger
scrolling through videos and photos of vintage cameras. She mistook the
images of vintage cameras for bombs and believed that the passenger was
looking up bomb-making instructions.

The woman’s fears peaked after the man pulled out his own vintage camera
and began fiddling with its settings — she believed that he was setting a
timer on a bomb’s detonator. She then notified a flight attendant and the
pilots decided to land in Queens.

https://petapixel.com/2021/10/11/mans-vintage-camera-mistaken-for-bomb-causes-emergency-landing/

After they landed, the guy with the camera was seen face down on the
tarmac.

A bunch of news outlets wrote later:
"Authorities determined there was no criminality at play in an incident
Saturday when a passenger was detained after reports of suspicious
behavior, prompting the flight arriving at New York City's LaGuardia
Airport to be deplaned on the tarmac."

I guess they decided that stupidity that caused the scare is not criminal.

The news snippet I saw on TV claimed that the guy had a camera that was
similar to a Mamia TLR.

It is interesting, that someone suggested in the comments that DHS
(Homeland Security) had initiated a fear of cameras a few years ago:

https://www.cjr.org/united_states_project/homeland-security-photography-warning.php

Cheers!

One thing that you'd need to choose there is the target version of DNG.
I would first convert just one file and check it by opening in all the
software tools that you are planning to use, to make sure it is adequate.

Yet another option that could be viable for you is to install a codec for

If you have Windows 10, - you can get a free Microsoft's package "Raw Image

If you need that same functionality on a Win-7 computer, Ricoh/Pentax has a

Re: Photo Hosting Site - Flickr or.....?

2021-10-03 Thread Igor PDML-StR

My wife has a flickr account. For several years, she's been paying an
annual fee, but a year or two ago, they raised the prices beyond
reasonable, so, she didn't renew it. The account is still available, but
there are very low limits on how much you can upload or show, or see.. I
don't remember the latest details.

If you have Amazon Prime, - you can use their photo storage for free, -
and display photos (you can organize them in albums) on the web, -
somewhat similar to flickr, but maybe with fewer organizational controls -
I didn't get into the details myself.

Yet another "free" alternative - is to use Google photos - you can store
up to 15 GB worth of files per the entire Google account (including Gmail,
G-drive, G-docs, etc.)

There are a few other websites that have free options - I don't know what
are the limits: Wix, 500px, SmugMug

A few more are listed here:
https://www.guru99.com/free-photo-hosting.html

Hope that helps,
Igor

Re: PESO -- Circular Waterfall 2021 Fish Eye

2021-02-01 Thread Igor PDML-StR

P.J., this is an interesting image that caught my eye when you posted the
first version, and now, I am looking at both.

I am not quite sure which of the two I like better.
The newer, "circular" version has more of the "caricature" feel to it.
It feels as if it us the (mini-) globe, and the water is flowing off from
the top - to both sides (and not just to the big "crater".

I like that type of effect. - That's fun!
(I've experimented with a similar view of a flower meadow.)

The first, semi-circular, version draws more attention to the giant
sinkhole/crater, in which the water rushes from otherwise (seemingly)
mostly calm and flat surface.
(And it doesn't even feel that much of a fish-eye, until you start
analyzing the image.)

This seems to be an overall more powerful image.

Cheers,

Igor

I have discussed this article yesterday and today with a friend who actually
works in medical research. We guessed that most likely the journalist was
given an assignment to write something by the deadline (possibly on the
subject), so she googled something and came up with some superficial
conclusions, without much of critical thinking, and got paid for that
mumbo-jumbo.

Besides having some wrong conclusions, what also adds to that impression is
that the journalist does not seem to demonstrate understanding of how
scientific research (publications) works: One of the referenced papers is a
manuscript at the stage when it was submitted for publication. I actually
have doubts if the journalist has actually verified whether it was published
in a peer-reviewed journal. (I checked, it was.) [*]

Now, about the underlying research:
At least the first research article quoted by the journalist is flawed.
(I am reluctant to analyze in detail all of them.) [**]

The biggest problem about it is non-representative choice of the study
participants. They had three studies, but all of them used college students
taking psychology courses:
"A total of 43 participants (30 women) were recruited from introductory
psychology courses at a small liberal arts college <...> Their ages ranged

"Participants were 126 college students aged 18–38 years (86 women <...>)
enrolled in an introductory psychology course at a small liberal arts
college."

That is a very narrow category of the study participants, with a higher than
average educational/cultural/social/... level.
I am sure if they took people from other socio-demographic groups, especially
from the lower social levels, they would've seen quite different results.

To summarize, the study reported is not necessarily representative for the
entire society. And the authors fail to acknowledge that fact.

(If I were the referee, I would've pointed this out, and would not have
recommended this article for publication unless a clear explicit statement
about that serious limitation is made. - I've done similar recommendations on
multiple occasions - in my field.)

This is a good example of how a [wrong] message from unscrupulous scientists
can be amplified by low-quality journalists. This type of situations
undermine the role of science in our society (leading to a wide-spread
skepticism toward the science in the society).

My apology for being a party pooper... :-)

[*]
Let me clarify this point for those who might not be familiar with how
scientific publications work. The author(s) submits a manuscript to the
editor for publication. The editor takes a look - to determine who would be
good reviewers, and sends it to those for review. Based on the reviewers'
comments and recommendations, the editor makes a decision: to publish, to
reject, or to give an opportunity to make improvements, in which case, the
article can go through an additional, similar, round of review.
I've refereed many manuscripts. A significant portion of those were not
suitable for publication without significant revision. Some of the
manuscripts should have never been published (and usually they weren't).

So, the bottom line is that a peer review is an important tool to weed out
improper articles. So if an article hasn't passed it, - its results and
conclusions might not be reliable.

However, it is important to recognize that the peer-review is not a
guarantee. Moreover, there are peer-reviewed publications that are wrong.
Some of those should not have passed through the peer-review, others were
found to be wrong by the subsequent studies stimulated by them. The latter is

OT - wonderful camera work ON ICE

2021-01-25 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi All!

I hope everybody is staying safe - in all parts of the world.

I came across this wonderful camera work (video):
https://youtu.be/qqIH9ez7d9A
(The skaters-dancers are also very skillful and fun to watch.)

I was curious how that video was shot (obviously, from the ice), so I
went to the author's website.
The camera man, Jordan Cowan, is a very experienced skater himself. In
addition to allowing him following the skater very close, it also gives
him a huge advantage of knowing the typical element sequences, which
allows him to expect/predict what's coming, and choose the best view
point.
(That is also related to our conversation(s) with Larry on shooting
dancers (by photographers who know the dance specifics).)

And his rig is quite impressive:

You can see more of his work on his YT channel:

Re: GESO: 21st Century reaches Phalaborwa!

2021-01-14 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Alan, I can assure you that you are farther ahead in the 21st century than
we are!
We still don't have fiber-optics internet in our twin city with the
population of about 200K.
(Our "best" provider, Suddenlink, a few years ago purchased and
drastically ran down by Altice, a French company, - offers up to 1 Gbps/50
Mbps [down/up].)

A friend of mine who lives in Queens, NY, said it is not available in
their 'hood.

Overall, with respect to ISPs, US is far behind Europe, both in coverage
and prices. (Of course, the vast size of the country [with many rural
areas] is a factor, but the absence of a healthy competition is by far
more crucial.)
We are paying in the vicinity of $100 per month for 100/10 Mbps
(down/up), with the monthly traffic "allowance" of 250 GB.

Oh, yes, and it is a fine documentary photo.

Cheers,

Igor

heads-up about the celestial event [*], and having seen the two planets
close
to each other last night with the naked eye, - I suggested my daughter to
walk over and chat.
He confirmed setting it up for the big planets, and offered to look at
them. He's got a serious telescope with the tracer, etc. I saw Jupiter
with 4 moons and the Saturn with the rings (for the first time in my
life). My daughter could see the same sans the 4th moon - she couldn't
adjust the focus for her eyes.
While the telescope was being set up, - she also got to see moon craters
(for the first time in her life).

I was very impressed.

Something good came out of us being late with the decorations. :-)

Re: OT steak and potatoes

2020-12-07 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Many moons ago, in 1999, my wife and I ventured into Wine Cellar Tasting
Room at Rio hotel in Las Vegas.
They were offering a tasting of old _white_ wines. By "old", I mean from
1970-s. They had a flight of 4 or 5 wines from the same winery from
different years, - over 5-6 years span.

The main take-home point:
Certain white wines can stay and age for long time (contrary to the
popular belief).
And you can tell the difference between the years - at that age (20+
years).

The funny moment was that when we tried one of those wines, we looked at
each other and agreed that it was not right: it went bed, although not to
the complete vinegar point yet. It was a popular place, and many people
went through that tasting before us that day. So, politely and carefully,
we told the host that the particular wine has probably gone over the hill.
He tasted it himself, agreed, and then wondered why nobody before us has
pointed that out.
He apologized, went into the back, and then told us that he didn't have
any bottles from that vintage year left, so, he brought even an older one,
- older than the entire flight, - that was usually not offered for
tasting. It was truly remarkable, the best of the bunch.

That was a great experience, and an educational one as well:
After that we've never been afraid to tell the wine-tasting hosts when we
had suspicions about some particular wine (when we felt something was
wrong).

Cheers,

Igor

I love living in California!

Admittedly growing up in the UK wasn't bad - French wines were available
in the stores at reasonable prices. I acquired a taste for Burgundies
(and especially Nuits St. Georges - my best experience was spotting a
bottle of the 1969 vintage mixed in with (and priced as) a shelf full
of the 1970s at an off-licence (US: liquor store) when I stopped off
on my way to a party to pick up something.

When I moved out to California I soon found the Sonoma Pinots (and, in
particular, those from the Carneros sub-region) were more to my taste
than those from Napa. But perhaps a decade ago I came across the Santa
Lucia Highlands wineries, and in particular Morgan Winery.

Mind you, it's hard to go wrong anywhere on the California or Oregon
coast if you're looking for Pinots.

clogging problem killed that printer.

Now I have an Epson L805, a simpler and cheaper model with a cheaper
(read, lower quality) ink set (EcoTank).

I have quite a stock of inkjet printing paper (mostly Kodak, labelled
as premium, ultra etc). Unfortunately, my recent L805 ink set
(especially the dark tones) is notoriusly late to dry. A fairly dark
print takes more than a week to dry. Even then, if you put a glass on
top, there are little foci that stick (or, if you press some plain
paper on the image you still see a few ink droplets transferred to the
paper).

Original Epson inkjet papers are very expensive and practically
unavailable. There is only the A3 size (not suitable for my L805) and
it is sold for about 3 dollars each. I guess there should be no ink
drying problem if one can use those.

Now, here is my question:
Can I do anything "after printing to an ordinary inkjet photo paper"
to make it dry quicker AND completely without damaging the image?
Would sunlight or heat or wind or ... work?

By the way, the printer accepts a command to print on a no-name card
and uses somewhat less ink for that (on the premise that it may not
absorb the ink well). So, there is practically nothing I can do
"before" printing.

Comments and help appreciated.

That's a nice shot - with great sharp image and interesting composition.

It is indeed hard to identify the mushroom. My first reaction was it was
one from the genus Leccinum, in the family Boletaceae, e.g. Leccinum
scabrum aka Birch bolete.

But under-the-hat (hymenium) looks like they don't have pores but gills.
If that's the case, - I've seen this type, but I've never known what it is

Use of GPS in cameras?

2020-10-27 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi All!

In the K3-III thread, people have been disappointed about the lack of the
GPS capability in the new APS flagship.

So, that got me thinking: how do people use GPS in their cameras?
What are the "use cases"?

I can see that people using astrotracers might need GPS. Also, if you are
taking travel photographs, it might help you to create a "photo
journal/map" of your trip.

But what about outside of those cases?

K-1 is the first dedicated camera (i.e. outside of the cell phone) that
has a GPS capability, but I have not turned it on yet.
(I was thinking about doing that during the trip to Yellowstone/Grand
Teton parks, but I didn't have good spare batteries on hand, so, I was
preserving the batteries, as one day I got very close to empty.)

Also, all my export presets in LR have "remove location" from the photos,
- to avoid some unnecessary accidental exposure with the photos posted to
the web. (I am not a celebrity, and not being stalked, but it is just a
general privacy precaution.)

Cheers,

Igor

Re: The 2021 PUG - Themes & High Res

2020-10-27 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Brian,

I would suggest a slight modification of some of the suggested topics.
(I think this way, it might open the theme for broader interpretations,
thus inviting some out-of-the-box contributions.)

Close up -> Up close and personal
Food -> Calories for Intake
Eggs -> Eggstatic or Eggcentric
Snow -> "Snow what?" or "Is that snow?"
(I've decided against Every Snow Often, I suppose snow, I told you
snow, but feel free to use any of these.)

I don't remember if we had this theme, but if we hadn't, we should (given
the habits of the PDML):

   Puns

Additionally, I suggest a theme that allows broad interpretation:
   Cogito ergo sum.
(The phrase by René Descartes, meaning "I think, therefore I am", but
everybody probably know that.)

I hope this one will inspire some fun photos.

While I was writing all of this, I saw some comments from others.
I sort of agree that "Eggs" might be a difficult theme for some.
Seeing that some people do not like Farm, and others do not like Garden,
I'd suggest combining the two into "Farm and [or?] Garden".

(Farm-O-Gardon ;-) )

Cheers,

Igor

Alan, I forgot to write, this was epsom (not Epson :-) ) salt, which is

Larry, the idea of a polarizer is interesting one, but in the current

hold a polarizer in front of a light source. And I am not quite sure if I
actually have one: I suspect I might have only one polarizer.

More on bokeh (Was: Re: PESO: 3D pop?)

2020-10-05 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Toine,

First, let me say that you've got a very nice image!

Paul has given a very simple explanation for the visual effect you (we)
observe. The further difference is (as Paul and a few others pointed out)
comes from the quality of the bokeh for the particular lens.

As you probably know, the lead (actually, lead oxide!) in the lens glass
raises its refractive index. This allows for thinner lenses for a given
focal length. However, glass with a higher refraction index has higher
dispersion that needs to be corrected to make the lens achromatic (i.e. to
minimize chromatic [and spherical] abberations).

So, the combination of these factors *can* affect the bokeh.

I've found this informative write-up on B website:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/understanding-bokeh
It gives a nice overview of what and how plays a role in the bokeh - with
some nice illustrations.

In particular, I didn't know that there are lenses with adjustable bokeh.

Now, I was curious about how much is known scientifically about bokeh.
It is clear that at least some lens manufacturers pay attention to it.

While I didn't do a deep comprehensive search in the scientific
literature, it seems, - not much seems to be published on that topic.
I've been able to find a few research articles adressing the theory and
theoretical calculation of the bokeh, but there are literally handful of
those. (And there was some research on how to fake bokeh, - I assume aimed
at creating "creative filters" for the phone-shooters.)

Of those, one paper I looked at was Viktor P. Sivokon, Michael D. Thorpe
Optical Engineering, 53(6), 065103 (2014).
https://doi.org/10.1117/1.OE.53.6.065103
(Sorry, it requires paid access. Feel free to contact me directly for
detail.)

They were able to model bokeh mathematically (analytically) and compare
to the actual bokeh produced by lenses with a reasonable accuracy.
Here is one of their results:

Re: OT: Why are cars getting bigger?

2020-10-02 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Ghm... Google tells me that Abraham Lincoln was 6'4" (193 cm).
So, now, I know why he did not drive a car: he didn't fit in either of
those cars. :-)

On a serious note, one guy we knew long time ago was close to 2-m tall
(somewhere in the vicinity of 6'6").
Surprisingly, the car he bought was a smallish one, something like Toyota
Celica. He had tried many cars, and that one had the most leg space for
him.

Cheers,

Igor

So, yes - he could fit comfortably in Ford Escort circa 1980es, while I'd
prefer bigger Ford Focus.

Re: Pentax gadget

John,

I thought that's why Alan [semi-]jokingly wrote "Pentax street legal".

Bill,
I suspect that at that time there were no Pentax DSLRs, and maybe even
no Pentax digital cameras (possibly with the exclusion of the medical
ones)?

I would have thought that the spirit was to allow all Pentax cameras (with
any lenses) and all Pentax lenses (with any cameras/camera backs).
This looks like a decent Pentax optics, on par with the earlier P's if
not better, doesn't it?

... And I won't be anal about Pentax medical imaging devices. :-)

Cheers,

Igor

It would be using the letter of the law to circumvent the spirit of the
law.

When I inserted that clause into the submission guidelines, cell phones
barely existed, much less had but in cameras.

Re: PESO: mushroom season

2020-09-17 Thread Igor PDML-StR

That's a very attractive photo, especially at a higher(tighter) zoom
level, where you can see every detail, as a few people have pointed out
already.

The glow is a nice touch!

Despite being avid mushroom gatherers (and eaters), we've never gathered
any of this type. Of all the mushrooms growing on trees and stumps, we
only gathered Armillaria - which we liked a lot! Those are tasty and easy
to handle, as they are almost never damaged by larva ("worms").

(Fun fact: in Russian, sulphur shelf/sulphur polypore mushrooms are called
"trutoviki", which shares the word root with "truten'" - drone bee; this
root means "parasite". These mushrooms are sometimes regarded as
"sanitarians of forests" that help keeping the forests healthy, but seen
as "pests" in personal gardens, as they ensure a quick death of your
favorite fruit tree.)

Speed-photographing?

2020-09-15 Thread Igor PDML-StR

It looks like a renewed challenge for photographers: speed photographing
in public places:

https://www.facebook.com/JordanMatterPhotography/videos/340158497339558/?story_fbid=10157199188877077=311293567076=aeMG32MC4UnnzD3l=null=e

That's a super-flexible (without going freakish) model who knows how to
make (and keep) lines. (She looks like a ballet dancer and possibly a
gymnast.)

The photographer who has a good eye for what would make a good shot.
He seems to be over-fixated on the splits in various orientations, but
that seems to be a big element showing flexibility (short of deep
contortions).

I just looked farther.
The guy has a bunch of similar videos in other settings on his FB page.
This one has more variations on the poses:
https://www.facebook.com/JordanMatterPhotography/videos/369888947514101/

And this has more varieties, I think, because the poses are offered by the
gymnasts themselves:
