Re: Pentax presentation - K20D feature (serious comment this time)

2008-01-24 Thread Lawrence Kwan
There are also a few other neat features in K20D:

AF Adjust - no need to get the hack firmware and bother with service menu.
There are two settings:
Apply All use the offset for all lenses.
Apply One calibrate one lens with memory capacity of 20 lenses
settings.

ISO Display - You can now set ISO display ON for all modes (not just Sv
or with ISO in control dials) in place of frame counter.

RAW Button customization - Three independent settings for the 3 format:
JPEG - JPEG / RAW / RAW+
RAW - JPEG / RAW / RAW+
RAW+ - JPEG / RAW / RAW+

High ISO NR - Off / Weakest / Weak / Strong

Catch-in Focus - Trap Focus
Pixel Mapping
Rear LCD Color Tuning

View Finder Display Change:
- New RAW or RAW+ display in View Finder; this is very convenient as I
don't need to check the top panel - especially now in combination with
   the customizable RAW button
- New line under ISO display similar to Aperture and Shutter speed to show
which one is being adjusted manually.
- Some display icons position has changed, e.g. SR icon is now on the
   right.

Good deal on a camera bag

It is a medium sized bag, with an all weather cover. A bit bulky, but
enough room for a few lenses or a flash. I would have prefered a less

Basically, there will be replacement models for K100D and K10D this year,

A higher end model is still in the works, but it does not sound like it

In that case, why don't you just use the reference card image to set WB in

This is what I used to do with my KM A200 RAW. Whenever there is change

Re: K10D buffer trials

2006-11-26 Thread Lawrence Kwan
I think the main difference here is that the PEF requires compression,
while the DNG does not. So the speed for PEF would depend on the balance
between the increase in overhead for compression routine vs the reduction
in write time because of smaller file size. Slower writing during
shooting means that the buffer would fill up faster.

Another possibility is that more RAM is required for compression, and
therefore less is available for the buffer.

On a related note regarding shooting RAW, someone in dpreview has shown

over 120 exposures shooting DNG on a 2 gig card. The pic I posted

It is different. Adjusting the exposure in camera is similar to changing
the ISO. Changing the ISO in camera is done at the A/D conversion stage.

Some high ISO settings such as ISO 3200 for the D80 are exceptions. In
this case, it was pure digital post-processing (and not done at A/D
stage). That's why in D80, they called it Hi 1.0 setting instead of
calling it ISO 3200, and not available in Auto ISO range. And you can
achieve the same ISO 3200 by taking the photos at ISO1600 with EV -1,
and then adjusting the exposure +1 in the RAW files.

So if you reach the limit of the ISO range, e.g. ISO 1600 in K10D, then
the +1 in camera would be no different than the +1 in PEF file.

audio/video DVD orientated software. So make sure it supports data DVD

I, myself, usually use Nero Burning ROM or ImgBurn

ImgBurn has a better burning engine and it is free. You can build and

For DVD archiving, please use high quality DVD discs and use multiple

Take your pick. I don't know which is correct.

None would be correct. The source of information is unreliable. Any
conclusions (if) you can draw from the unreliable information would be
unreliable. So you should NOT draw any conclusion at all.

Would you trust just anyone from Pentax telling you info? Even someone

would you trust a support staff or someone who answered the phone/email?

I have pursued this simply because something smells fishy to me about
 Pentax's explanation for the delay.

I sense your skepticism and distrust about this. And you will continue to
smell fishy as long as you have this distrust; and you will jump on any
info supporting your theory.

My advice is to take it easy and relax. Product launch delay is very
common. And a 3-4 weeks delay is almost nothing. Compare this with PS3
which was announced a zillion years ago, and still the European launch is
delayed for over 5 months! And how about Vista? I can't even count how
many times that has been delayed. And did Microsoft and Sony give us any
technical details as to how and why things were delayed? It surely is
more complicated than one sentence can convey.

To be honest, I don't care. A delay is a delay, for whatever reason. As
long as Pentax can give us a great camera by December, I'd be happy.

A year from now, who would remember this 3 to 4 weeks delay?

From what JohnCPentax has described (not sure if I understand him

I won't doubt Pentax would do reasonably well in its domestic market.
What would be interesting is the market share in US/Europe and the world

Lack of AA Battery Power - they don't have a choice

There have been complaints about lack of AA battery power, and many felt
abandoned by Pentax engineers. But in fact, I don't think they have a
choice. K10D requires much higher voltage to run. The DC-in is 8.3V
instead of previous 6.5V. So in order to run AA batteries, especially
NiMH ones, you need at least 6xAA. This is simply not possible for the
size of K10D.

Even with 6xNiMH AA, it may be stretching it; as the batteries run down,
you may only get about 6.6V. And with the current size of the battery
grip, I am not sure if there is enough room for 6 AAs, unless they make
the grip much larger with a bulge for batteries.

Interestingly, some reviews were negative about the use of AA in previous
cameras, as they were unhappy about the lack of rechargeable solution in
the included camera package. So you can't keep everyone happy.

The Pentax Japan K10D page is up (surprisingly being the last and one day

- Initial production is set at 13,000 per month

- Changeable Focusing screen is confirmed
(apparently not interchangeable with existing ones).
- Camera Settings retained for 1 month after battery removed.
- SR not operational during Bulb, Remote, Self-Timer or Wireless Flash.
- Retractable Flash cannot be used to control wireless flash.
You need to have an external flash attached to K10D for wireless flash.
- No mention of AA batteries anywhere.
- 2GB SD Card can store 120 PEF or DNG files;
   or 409 JPEGs at 3 star/10M settings.
- No Sample images available yet.

Ken's data is factual, not guess work. And its much more useful to

Even for auto industry, where much much more money and thousands of jobs

Actually, the reverse is true. Image stabilization in the lens require
much smaller movement as you are rotating the lens. And you have the

The increase in resolution is useful; the slight increase in noise is not

A F2.8 zoom in this range would be quite a monster.

Incredibly, no; you still have to pay even if you are blind!

 this camera.

It is probably a typo.  I have the S4, and there is no diopter adjustment;
it is fixed at -1 at 3m.

For this to work I assume one would have to use either the multi-point
focusing (letting the camera decide what to focus on) or the selected
point focusing. Using only the central sensor with focus lock on
 something off-center wouldn't work. Am I correct?

One of the custom function allows you to link the matrix metering with the
focal point. I presume what you said above was correct when that custom
function was set. If that custom function setting was turned off, then it
should behave as traditional matrix metering with no focus information
taken into account.

P-TTL uses matrix metering, so in theory, it should give better results
when center weighted metering could be fooled. And in case of *ist, it
can give priority in the matrix metering area corresponding to the focal
point. Off centered subjects is one example where P-TTL should be better.

Other reasons for P-TTL: multiple wireless TTL flash, high-speed sync
TTL flash and flash exposure compensation.

Using your Palm as Pentax IR Remote

2003-12-15 Thread Lawrence Kwan
Using your Palm as Pentax IR Remote

I have programmed a Pentax remote database file, so that you can use your
Palm as Remote Control D or F without the need for an original remote.
This database file is for NoviiRemote
(http://www.novii.tv/products/noviir/) for Palm.

Initially, I preferred OmniRemote as it appeared more flexible with macros
and customizable layout. However, I simply could not get it to work,
despite playing around with all the different settings combinations.
NoviiRemote is big and less flexible; but it works with my Palm.

I used VCR layout as it has a big OK button; and one should be able to
press it with a finger without a stylus. I have programmed both the power
button and the OK button with the Pentax Remote. Just hotsync the pdb
file and you can select it from the top menu under VCR.

It worked fine with MZ/ZX series SLRs and Optios when tested with
NoviiRemote 2.3 with Tungten T3 and m505. And I got much better range
with T3 which worked over 30+ft or 10+m indoors! For m505, it only worked
within 10-15ft (3-5m). Outdoor range with bright sunlight is expected to
be much shorter.

The file can be downloaded here:

I tried what you said and it worked quite fine... I suppose the

it is not easy to get the feedback, supposing there is some.

Actually, you get the same beep and viewfinder confirmation with S4.
Another way to reduce autofocus lag is to use spot/single focal point
instead of the default wide focal points. After autofocus and preflash
are done, the shutter release lag is only 0.01s, one of the fastest in
this class.

New OmniBounce model for AF-360FGZ

2003-11-08 Thread Lawrence Kwan
StoFen has finally released a OmniBounce model for the AF-360FGZ:
OM-PZ8 (http://www.stofen.com/Store/Products.htm)

Other users have been using OM-MZ3; so I presume the new model should fit
better. I wrote to StoFen last year to ask about what to use for
AF-360FGZ. At that time, Ernie from StoFen told me that none fit
perfectly. And I was pleasantly surprised that he took the trouble to
save my email and wrote me back yesterday to tell me about the new model
released.

Will not - true; Pentax has chosen not to support OTF-TTL flash.
But technically, there is no reason why it cannot be done. It is left out
mainly for cost saving reasons; just like the crippled mount.
FYI, the Fujifilm S2Pro supports OTF or Off-The-CCD TTL flash as well as
pre-flash TTL flash; while ironically, none of the Nikon DSLRs does.

I noticed that while both the *ist *ist-D use the

Is this due to the fact that the *ist-D has a smaller
sensor (APS size), hence a smaller focusing screen?

You are correct. The physical area the AF sensors cover is the same in
both cameras. So it would appear proportionally larger in the smaller APS
image sized *ist-D. And yes, the coverage area was optimized for the
smaller APS sensor, but it is still miles better than the 3 point linear
AF sensors in ZX series.

I'm afraid I'm not very optimistic regarding the *ist D's fate in the

 1) it is not entry level enough to make an impact. By this I mean it is
just a me too compared to the D10 and the D100 and has no obvious
price advantage compared to those. It will face hard competition from
forthcoming, cheaper DSLR's. 2) Design. The *istD is ugly with no design
flair thats going to convince anyone.

I got to use an *ist-D quite a bit last weekend and I disagree strongly
 with both of those points.

More serious competition for *ist-D - Kiss Digital/300D

2003-08-19 Thread Lawrence Kwan
Canon has released its rumoured budget DSLR - Kiss Digital:

http://cweb.canon.jp/camera/eosd/kissd/index-j.html

Very similar to 10D, pentamirror instead of prism, smaller buffer, no
ISO 3200. Weighs less, 560g (vs *ist-D's 550g), and cosst less.

Also new is EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 USM lens designed for Kiss Digital.
S stands for short back focus, and this lens cannot be used for 35mm
SLRs.
