Re: TA
If people wanted more male nude photos then they would happen. We may have biased attitudes but for matters of taste like photography , unlike legal rights, this has to change slowly. A picture of a naked person will elicit a sexual response, positive or negative, from most people. I don't believe at all that sexuality goes away just because it's art, statue of David included. Doesn't matter what their bits are like - you don't have to look at them if you don't want to. All those people are 'us'. I'd be more inclined to agree without if there wasn't that pesky larger context. This is, after all, a world where women get paid less than men, have less access to political power, get raped more frequently, etc. So Frank has a point that what happens on PDML may in fact reflect that larger context. Well, I agree with you that the world is somewhat unbalanced in this respect, and that is where the matter of free, informed consent comes into it. It's very difficult to know in any given instance whether someone is genuinely giving their consent freely, and I think I mentioned elsewhere the matter of peer pressure, society pressure and so on. I think on a matter like this, where the people involved are apparently well informed, and living in a liberal democracy, we have to presume that they are fully aware of the nature of what they're doing, and we shouldn't try to project our own reading of the situation and our own morals onto them. At the same time we have to stay aware that others are forced or pressured into doing things they'd rather not and, as a society, offer them a way out of it if they wish to take it. I do agree with the people who say that any changes in the PDML should come from individuals, but if you're upset that Frank brought up the subject in the first place, you need to educate yourself. I imagine you mean 'you' in the general sense, rather than me specifically. I'm not upset that Frank brought it up - it's an important issue, but I think we have to be careful while striving to be well-meaning that we don't bend over so far that we either get our heads stuck somewhere, or that we turn into Puritans or the Taliban. Rather, I sincerely believe that all that rumor mill is not doing company any good. Each time there is a new release from Pentax, the rumor mill starts anew. This creates illogical expectations, starts new flame wars on internet forums and ultimately leads to people being disappointed. Pessimistic or not, I don't see any good in these things. Internet forums need to be taken for what they are worth. Over on the Fuji forum at DPReview, a guy is wailing that Fuji isn't making a commitment to the APS-C aensor size, and therefore he doesn't think Fuji is a good purchase, just in case they dump APS-C in favour of 35mm. Of course Fuji has never said anything one way or the other about 35mm. Companies cannot do anything about the illogic of people, especially it seems when they invest the degree of fanaticism into a camera brand that manifests as overarching fanboyism. Companies can't be responsible for people being disappointed over new products, they can't be responsible for the illogical expectations of fanatics, all they can do is put products on the market for sale, and try to hit a market point that will buy it. If Pentax, or any company, was to place the importance you are implying they should on the rumour mills of internet fanboys, they would pretty much have to stop putting new products on the market entirely, since every new release would be causing a new group of whack jobs to slit their wrists. It seems they really can't win. They put nothing on the market, and they go out of business, they put new products on the market and that isn't a good thing either. Re: Black Friday Pentax deals?
One of my favorites. I still use it as a slow normal zoom. P. J. Alling [EMAIL PROTECTED] 11/27/2008 7:44 PM Yes but I'm all set for FF Pentax, I've still got my 20-35mm FA 4.0 really nice as an ultra wide on film,. even better as a ~28 mm equivalent on APS-C and also no where near $2000 when new. It breaks my heart that it's been discontinued. Adam Maas wrote: And that's a crop lens. So it would be one of the ways of saving $2000 dollars by running in DX crop mode. It sucks at 18mm on FF (Been there, done that with the Tokina on an F100, it's not anything approaching a solution for FF use). Truly good ultra-wide zooms for F mount come down to the 14-24 f2.8 (the king of ultra-wide zoom performance on any mount right now, beats every prime in its range except the 21 Distagon) at $2k CDN and the 17-35 f2.8 AF-S which gets worse as it gets wider but is extremely good at 35mm. He brought his wife along, who is also accomplished in this field. Officially, I was the light donkey. Anyway, we got done what we needed the Genies for, so I had moved them aside, and was in the process of packing up. At some point, another wedding had started shooting in the location we had just vacated. I was gathering equipment, when I noticed the other photographer was doing her wedding with a Canon Rebel of some sort (which isn't germaine, but I like to take cheap shots when I can), what looked like the starter zoom and the built in flash for illumination. Yes folks, that's right, the built in flash. The gathering process took me into close proximity to a couple of the groomsmen from the other wedding. One of them asked me why we had so much equipment onsite (a couple of D300s, the Genies, 2 metx handlemounts, several lenses, 3 people, you get the picture), when their photographer was just using the camera and built in flash. I just didn't know what to say I probably stood there looking at him for five seconds before I mustered this gem: Im sure your pictures will be just fine. I just saw this and was going to send a post about it. This reviewer seems like a reasonable sort but isn't a photo-weenie like those of use here (and I saw that with great fondest for y'all.) His most serious reason for not buying the camera is that next year's model will have video capabilities. For the vast majority of those buying cameras, this is a perfectly good reason to wait since they would enjoy and get use out of a camera that does both. This is particularly funny given our rather technical PDML discussions about the 4/3 system. Re: potentially controversial: The NY Times on the Panasonic G1
He does say As a result, the new G! occupies 29 cubic inches , in contrast to the 64 cubic inches for the Nikon (D90); it weighs 8 oz vs. 22. He also says it's bigger and heavier than the Olympus 420. The 420 weighs 13.4 oz (so I suspect he meant to write 18 oz. for the G1) and is 38.6 cubic inches, assuming he just multiplied out the dimensions (5.1x3.6x2.1). So I'm confused as well. Re: Yee Ha!!!
Christine, you really need to work up some excitement over your work. We are enthusiasts, after all. Steve Steven Desjardins Department of Chemistry Washington and Lee University Lexington, VA 24450 (540) 458-8873 FAX: (540) 458-8878 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Christine Aguila [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/23/2008 10:10 PM Just printed out my first 13 x 19 BW on Ultra Premium Matte. Yee Ha!!! If I do say so myself, it looks so cool. This printing is so much fun. Here's the photo: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=8080119size=lg For the past couple of months, I've been photographing the construction that is taking place at my work. We're getting a 6-7 story indoor parking building and a beautiful new student services building. The architectural renderings are now on exhibit in the lobby of our main campus building about 15 of my BWs will also be on exhibit as soon as the framing is done. During the next 18 months, we'll be rotating photos that tell the story and progression of the construction. I have full access to the construction site and have my own hard hat, which I must obviously wear. I had to read a safety manual have to follow the safety rules. When I can shoot, I call down, and a young (and usually cute :-)) assistant foreman lets me on site, then escorts me around. He usually says things like, Christine, watch out for that boulder ahead of you, (like when I'm walking have my nose behind the camera) or I have him explain to me what it is I'm seeing, since I know absolutely nothing about construction, though I am learning, and it's very interesting. I've always admired what man can build. I'm using the K20D with the DA 16-45mm. Since the DA is F4, I put it on the K20, since that camera has really good High ISO quality if I need it. The DA* 50-135mm is on the K10D, but today, when I shot the crusher grinding up huge boulders, I put the DA* on the K20D. I didn't feel like doing any wide angle shots. Anyway, I just felt like letting a Yee Ha loose :-). Thanks for listening, if you, in fact, did ;-). Re: Full Frame: what is it?
The only real issue (in my mind) is the availability of wide angle lenses. It's easier to get wide angles for the FX format (Nikonese, I believe) especially since so many exist in the used market. Other than that, I'm happy with a smaller camera and the DX format. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Full Frame: what is it?
Oh, I'm not saying you can't do it. It's just that many folks have a number of wide angles that are no longer as useful in the DX format. I don't, so I'm happy with the smaller format. RE: Sony full frame A900, where's Pentax?
Clearly Olympus has decided not to play the FF game either. As for Sony, remember that they are essentially Konica -Minolta with a lot more money. I really don't known how a pro level camera would help Pentax's reputation. It's not like we'd start to see a bunch of Pentax lenses at sporting events. Wedding guys would be the best adverting. Re: The old Jewish quarter of Fez
The color balance looks really good to me. Nice shots, too. Bob W [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/8/2008 2:53 PM Here are some photos I took wandering around the Mellah last week: http://www.web-options.com/Mellah/ I'm particularly interested to hear your views about the colour balance in these shots. The colour is what attracted me to the scene, but in the unprocessed raw state it appears to have a very strong colour cast - possibly I had the white balance wrong on the camera. I have used LR to set them to a more neutral colour, but in doing so I'm worried I may have lost some of the original impact. I can't trust my own colour vision or memory.
