Looks what I expected for Pentax's next DSLR. Somehow I expected more from SONY, (and sooner). Colour me underwhelmed. Preliminary pricing looks to be $100 more than a 40D with less performance (other than in-body IS). It is the desire of most civilised societies to have the freedom to express their views, and there is no fault here. What there is, is a difference of cultural exchange. In America, it is part and parcel of the culture to express a view even if that view does not necessarily move the discussion on in a positive way, whereas in other parts of the world it is perceived to be inconsiderate to express a belief that appears to denigrate. This is the cost of a world-wide list, and unmoderated. The positive aspects of such (in my opinion ;-) far outweigh the disadvantages, and so we must try and deal with it. We all like a bit of silliness now and again, and I am no exception. I enjoy reading nonesense about how ugly a camera looks, and I certainly enjoy Ken's posts. I also enjoy reading of the extremely technical nature of digital photography, and I equally enjoy reading Godfrey's posts. So, here is a pretend post that probably would never happen here on this list - look at the content, and think about it, and think how the reply might seem offensive to someone from a culture slightly less 'up front and in your face' POST A: Vibrating components is by far the best method of cleaning DSLR sensors, as the vertical and horizontal movement of the sensor at a high frequency means that small particles of dust and detritus are forced off the sensor and onto the sticky surface below where they are collected. Re: Prettiest/Ugliest Pentax Equipment (was RE: New Sony)
There seems to be an almost lovely clunky functionality to the SFX series now -- they seem so wedded to their time, a late-1980s, funky LCD-and-switches style. I initially thought the PZ-1/PZ-1p series were ugly bulbous plastic blobs but I later came to love their form factor, ergonomics and size -- and this is from someone who has a huge appreciation for the older Pentaxes as well, from the SV through the K series, LX and Super A. I just consider the more modern bodies a different animal. Joe Hi Thibouille I share your taste with the SFX series but to be fair, these ugly bodies have served me very well over the last years. Photography is important to me, it's not just a passing fancy that I dally in to pass the time. It sounds like it is just that to you. I'll say what I think about something that's important to me. Otherwise, what waste my time on a discussion forum? - If I have a problem with what you have to say, I'll say it direct and to your face. I won't snigger and whisper about you behind your back with other people who are my friends. - If you take issue with something I say, show a little courage and say what the problem is straight out. You won't offend my delicate sensibilities. - If you don't want to talk to me, don't: Filter my emails to the trash, just like I filter others on this list who act like jerks IMO. - Nothing I'm saying is intended to offend you, unless you want to make condescending insinuations about my attitude or air of pompousness or other such petulant malarkey. Then I'll tell you to go fuck off. And BTW: If I discover that you're speaking of me behind my back in a manner that suggests libel or slander, I'll have my attorney contact you to resolve that. The fact that those two are superb cameras is what's important. These are my opinions. I don't know what Sony's new box is yet. I see no reason to disparage it by calling it ugly. I knew this irritated you :-). But strange! What's in it? how does it perform? how much will it cost? what is the quality of the lenses available for it? ... These are questions I'm interested in the answers to. As I said, you are not the only person who wants to know these. Today was just the first day of PMA. There are already many info coming out under the table at least in Japan, and soon they will be here. But as somebody else said, I would not put too much speculations on non-Pentax subjects littering this list. The only reason why I raised the Sony matter was that there has been a persistent rumour about their flagship being a FF sensor with 20MP etc, which I thought might have some bearing on those who are wishing Pentax FF. But loom at your questions. We were just joking around the loom of their mockup as everybody else in the world was doing. Some of their posts were downright funny. But that does not mean that people have interest only on the ugliness and not other more important questions. As I said, I will buy an ugly camera in a heartbeat if it gives me what I want. But don't even think that people who were joking around one subject do not have questions/interests in other point. That was my point. And I felt there has been a pattern of some pompousness when you start trying to disparage somebody else's discussions. As I pointed out much earlier, your mentality in the same tone is when you suddenly crop up, blaming somebody else's thread being a waste of time and you should ignore it. As I said at that time, in defense of somebody else, I thought it was rude/intrusive and told you that if you think certain thread is stupid and waste of time and wish to ignore it, do so quietly without telling the world that you should ignore it. If you want to discuss beautiful toys, by all means, but don't make insinuations about my opinions. I didn't opine that you were an idiot for considering it ugly. I don't care about the beautiful toys although I appreciate beautiful craftsmanship. This comment alone has another underlying tone. And why do you think I made insinuations about your opinion. It was not at all about your opinion, but your attitude, and I tried to be subtle about it but you made this into your opinion vs my opinion. I never insinuate others' opinion. Did you ever see me doing so? I was only trying to subtly communicate with you on underlying' tone of your post and your habit. And when I said something not so nice about someone, I always try to balance it by saying something nice such as you have been helpful
Re: New Sony
Who are you directing your question towards? If me, the discussion about the Pentax 645D mock-up's design was specifically a discussion of its ergonomics and styling, since there was very little data available as to their internals. That's why Pentax offered a public view of the mock-ups. So a discussion of the styling was apropos for them. I'm entitled to state my opinions too on a free list. I said that *I* didn't give a damn about the aesthetics of the Sony lump not that others couldn't or shouldn't comment on it, or even that commenting about it was wrong, incorrect, or inappropriate and that *I* would like to hear more about its technical details and performance, which I presume others who enjoy being more than Pentax 'brand cheerleaders' would also. I said nothing negative to or about Ken until he decided to pick a fight for no reason at all and acted in such a condescending manner. My comment wasn't even directed at Ken, it was rhetorical. If he wants to act childishly, I can do without him. It is never my intent or desire to insult someone, and that's exactly what he was intending/ doing with his insinuations and condescension although he claims otherwise. As you, and others, have so often stated, there is no value to this list anyway. It exists for informal discussion and banter, supposedly between friendly persons. It is not a source of information from Pentax. I subscribe because there is some fun banter, occasionally useful information and I can assist a few people occasionally. Can't take that: don't read my posts. I don't care if you do or don't, that's up to you. Re: New Sony
I beg to differ, Adam, but Sony is showing two prototypes. They are of two new models, different models, not three mockups of one future model. And as far as I can tell from reading the various blurbs on them, they are not soliciting design/styling information from people, just showing what they have coming. Pentax was explicitly showing three possible mockups for the 645D camera with the notion of gathering people's input on what they liked most. Why do you think others won't think that way? What's wrong in chatting about the shape or anything else. Sony have not released any meaningful info yet. We are just enjoying the speculation game. Take it easy :-). Anyone has the right to discuss about any aspects of camera and photography. What do you mean here I go again ??? You mean I cannot voice my opinion that I don't give a rat's ding- dong what it looks like? And you can voice your opinion that it is ugly? That's so wonderful of you. You have been helpful in many areas. Then what *IS* the point, Ken? You want me to relax and yet you continue to insinuate that there is something wrong with my voicing my opinion. If you're accusing me of something, it would be nice to know right up front what it is. Otherwise, cut out the BS. I say again: I don't give a damn what Sony's new pro DSLR looks like. It looks like a camera to me. A Pentax 645 looks like an ungainly box with a pipe on the front and a handle. A Hasselblad is another fugly box with a pipe stuck on it. The fact that those two are superb cameras is what's important. These are my opinions. I don't know what Sony's new box is yet. I see no reason to disparage it by calling it ugly. What's in it? how does it perform? how much will it cost? what is the quality of the lenses available for it? ... These are questions I'm interested in the answers to. If you want to discuss beautiful toys, by all means, but don't make insinuations about my opinions. I didn't opine that you were an idiot for considering it ugly. Godfrey, I try not to dig in too deep into this, for your own sake, but since you asked. Perhaps, I should send this off list but since you challenged in public. BTW, I am in no mood to pick a fight with anybody. I and some others have been feeling that there has been an underlying tone in some of your posts. I do not go deep into this simple yet stupid matter. But you tend to try to shut down perfectly legitimate discussion, by suddenly cropping up, and saying things as if the discussion is stupid and the camera is just a tool etc etc. Fine, you are right. But there is always touch of air of arrogance and pompousness in them. Am I the only one who feels so? Apparently not. I don;t care whether certain things look ugly or not, and anyone can participate in the discussion. And actually, this Sony teasing is just that, teasing and nothing to get serious about it. Everybody is doing it, in many other forums here or in Japan. But that's not the point at all. Who cares! If you want to know more, I can say more but I do not want, as I do not want to get personal with anybody. Why do I have to drain my emotion in a mere internet forum about cameras? I have so many better things to do. Plus, in this list, there are many hobbyists and for them, photography is just one way of relaxing, not something to get emotional about it. Just be humble and be happy. Challenging this to the end won't make anybody happier. If you wish to battle it out, which I think you are smart enough not to, please bring it off list so that we do not make other people annoyed. And when I said something not so nice about someone, I always try to balance it by saying something nice such as you have been helpful in many areas, in a hope you will understand there was nothing personal. This is enough. I am tired of this. I know I should not have raised this and wanted and hoping that this won't come to this, but since you challenged it Like I said, take it easy. To me, this is just another hobby list, and it is in fact stupid to get emotional and personal. This is not a life or death matter and I have no desire to continue any more. Not a particularly illuminating article, though. I was hoping for something more technical.
