So I had many unintended worthless minutes of video and many missed still shots. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Aw Marnie do not mock my beloved K-01. It is my carry-around back-up and often main camera. Never fails to take good photos and with a small or pancake prime is very compact light. One feature I think is overlooked is the shape has flat surfaces -instant tripod horizonal vertical. I used it just last week when the light went away to take some 1-15 sec time exposures by setting it on a flat surface. Works even with a short tele. How much was it on ebay? Re: Anyone have the Pentax X-5? or Q7?
I like the Q and expect that I'll like the Q-7 even more, though I have no plans on buying one immediately. I travel a lot for work and the Q is a perfect travel kit - the Q, 2 zooms, normal prime and fisheye fit in a case that is about the size of lens case for a normal 35mm zoom. WHen I was in Chicaco a while back I carried a film kit, but had the entire Q kit in one compartment of the bag. Nice to have a 12MP digital and lenses covering the 35mm equivalent of 17 - 280 mm in one little pack. I I want to go all out I carry a small SLR bag with the whole Q kit plus macro ring light, K-to Q apter and 50mm macro - which gives me an uber macro setup. However - those aforementioned items take up about 2x the space of the whole Q system. The camera has its limits but for me that advantages outweigh those. The disadvantages are that the Q with lens is not completely pocketable - jacket pocket, OK, jeans, not so much; the IQ is high end PS quality, no viewfinder... The Q7 has improvements in IQ and autofocus. Look at some 100% samples from the X-5. I've owned some bridge cameras and the panny ones were always the best IMO with support for RAW and great lenses. The X-5 samples look pretty awful full size. What about the Nikon P7100 or P7800? (P7100 has shitty OVF and is my current main camera, P7800 supposedly has better EVF and I'll be getting one soon-ish for the faster lens -- do NOT touch the P7700 because it hasn't any viewfiender). A fair bit smaller than the X-5, better low-light performance (larger sensor), shorter zoom range. A similar option would be the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LF1, which is even smaller, but only has fixed screen instead of articulating. But getting into the PUG certainly has its appeal! -- Hugs and backrubs -- I break Rule 6http://rule6.info/ * * * And yes, I see the typo above, left in just because -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Anyone have the Pentax X-5? or Q7?
I don't own one but I did research a while ago, for pretty much the reasons you've got. The bottom line appears that the Pentax X-5 is really just another bridge camera pretty much like all other bridge cameras. It's a small sensor, though quality is supposed to pretty good up to ISO 400. When it was first released the zoom range on the lens was pretty special and it had sensor based anti shake, but since then there are a number of cameras in that class with amazing zoom ranges and anti shake systems either sensor based or optical. About the only thing it's got going for it is it looks a little like a small K-5, and the only thing it's got over the Q is it has an eye level EVF. Marnie, unless you absolutely have to have a Pentax, I'd heartily recommend you look at the Nikon Coolpix P7100, a really great little package that has most of the features of a mid to low level DSLR with a lens that goes to an effective 200mm. No interest in X-5 myself. My walkabout camera is an Olympus E-PL1 that I picked up body only used for $95. A new Olympus 15mm f/8 body-cap lens was $50, and I already had the Ricoh GV-2 finder for the Ricoh GXR with A12 28mm camera unit. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3748/9859745064_0ae3102f26_o.jpg The whole deal weighs 14 oz as you see it there, and is big enough to hold steadily. The lens is a fixed aperture 15mm f/8 triplet. It focuses from infinity to .3m at the close limit with a little lever, is click-stopped at the hyper-focal distance for snap-shooting. When you slide the lever to the red mark, it's covered and protected. Light, handy, in body image stabilization ... the body takes an EVF if you want to as well, and the lens mount is completely compatible with the entire range of Micro-FourThirds lenses and other accessories. Image quality is not bad for a cheap triplet lens ... http://www.flickr.com/photos/gdgphoto/9859734955/lightbox Of course, if I want more quality, similar size and a wee bit more weight, an Olympus 17mm f/2.8 lens and a 35mm optical viewfinder does an even better job on the same body. Re: Anyone have the Pentax X-5?
Yes, I am sure the one I had was crap. The concept is good and with sensor technology what it is these days it should have been a winner. But it was very bad! I shot hundreds of pics with it and only one was somewhat OK. The electronic vf was So BAD. Totally a toy. The rear screen was ok, but then you look at just about anything else out there and it was much better. Just not worth the money. I was just at Camera camera and they have EPL-2's and EP-3's for around 200 and less. These are either new or factory refurbs with full warranty. Some have kit lenses as well. I am sure there are a lot of good choices out there. Others have made excellent recommendations as well. I would hate to see you get stuck with the E-5 and not be happy with it, which I am sure would happen. Walt On Sat, Sep 21, 2013 at 4:27 PM, eactiv...@aol.com wrote: Are you sure? Re: Anyone have the Pentax X-5?
You should be able to get your hands on a Pentax X-5 at Target. Probably won't be able to do much with it, but you can at least check out whether the size fits what you're looking for. Thanks. I've been looking (online) at a lot of Fuji's because of the IQ. M aka D In a message dated 9/21/2013 2:08:19 P.M. Target stores have the X-5, so you can check it out for yourself. On 9/21/2013 4:27 PM, eactiv...@aol.com wrote: Are you sure? Re: X-5, the price is great, and it has a lot of features, and it has that retro look. So I'd be found to find the controls easily enough. Unless people aren't understanding that I want a PS for travel purposes. This would not be my main camera. I've decided to stick with Canon for another year (just get lighter lenses). None of the others I've looked at (on line) really match, or come close to matching, DSLRs yet. And, well, I am not ready yet to switch to a whole new system, if I have serious reservations. Which I do. Despite the word being verbotten around here, I've been very happy with Canon over the years. Re Oly, yes, a lot recommend the 17mm for a true compact camera on the PENs. But the electronic viewfinders are expensive, even if you get the camera cheap. And I haven't turned up any used ones yet. Marnie aka Doe :-) In a message dated 9/21/2013 12:57:46 P.M. Does have a smaller sensor, but supposed to take good pics. If I my back-up camera is Pentax, I can get in the PUG now and then too. Heh. Anyway, anyone have one? Like it? The Pentax Q might be an option too, although I have my doubts (yes, know it takes interchangeable lenses), but has the X-5 is a little cheaper. Heck, it's downright cheap. Re: Anyone have the Pentax X-5?
I have a great compact travel camera. I take the battery grip off my k5 and mount the 40/2.8 pancake. Bingo. For everyday pocket camera, it's an iphone5, better than many ps pos. I mentioned Disneyland in particular. That is not a place you want a heavy camera, going on rides, et. all. For the Southwest, for sure, I'd want a DSLR or something good. HTH, Have a Nice Day!
