My thought is that the gallery has enough in it now to allow the
judges to be pickier. By that I mean, if they feel a particular
photo has others in the gallery already then it might get rejected.
If it is something totally different of new, then it might get
accepted. As an example: There are some great dragonfly shots in the
gallery now and I continue to see many more great dragonfly shots
submitted. I could envision the judges to be more picky about that
kind of shot than some other types that are not well represented.

Tough call on that. I had 15 in that status for about a month. All
were rejected the other day by the judges and most of them used to be
in the gallery before I pulled them all out. So I'm thinking that
the peers accepted them and the judges didn't.

Re: pentax gallery

2008-06-08 Thread Toine
I had 3 approved in the last weeks. I tracked my photos in the recent
addition category and lots of other new photos appeared (maybe 10 each
week). The number/counter of new additions also varied. Didn't make
notes, looks like older photos drop from that list.
Anyway my observation is they are accepting many new photos and many
new photos are in the same genre, sunsets, lighthouses, bugs, flowers
etc. My advise keep posting they didn't raise the bar, only the input
volume has exploded. It wouldn't surprise me if the judges pick one or
two every day from the voting queue and if that's true luck is also
important. My approvals are a little surprise to me, 2 of them are
quick tests of a new lens. Others which I gave much more thought and
time didn't make it.

Toine,
When you use the term accepted, do you mean they have been accepted for
review or have been accepted/approved into the Pentax Gallery?
I agree it's taking quite a number of days to get a result from those which
have been accepted for review.
Congratulations on having work accepted for the gallery.

Re: Pentax Gallery Voting

2008-03-09 Thread AlunFoto
I'm totally with you, Bruce.
I have posted here before on how the voting page is programmed, and
this change seems to be addressing one of my main criticisms; the
total size of the webpage.
Because of the way it is programmed, the page has to pre-load all the
full-gallery-size images at first call. With five full-gallery-size
images in landscape orientation, the voting page easily amounts to 1.5
MB. By shrinking the large pics on the voting page, they reduce load
time significantly.

What would have been better was to increase thumbnail size, and drop
the pre-loading for an on-demand loading of the full-size images.
However, this would mean a total deviation from the page design. The
whole voting registration would need reprogramming. It's not a small
task. :-(

Jostein

2008/3/9, Bruce Dayton [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
Has anyone noticed the big change in the voting mechanism. It seems
that the pictures are being shrunk down below the 600 pixel size that
is set for the gallery. Two issues for me:
 1) picture is even smaller - makes it harder to evaluate
 2) the sizing function can massacre the picture making it look much
 poorer than it really is.

I'm surprised that Pigeon Point wasn't accepted. It's an exceptional
shot.
There have been pano shot on which I've voted no because that was
identified in the beginning as reason for them to be declined. I took
that as part of the voting instructions. There were some that were only
slightly pano cropped that I didn't consider severe enough. I'm just
offering this as a possible reason for the second shot being declined.

These two were finally declined after sitting there waiting for about
3 weeks - which means the final judges declined after peer approval.

Mark!

PDML rule of thumb (I should probably call it Rule of quick thumb):
If you have important news to post FYI, if you wait long enough,
somebody else would post it to PDML.

Corollary:
If you post some news that is more than 1 hour old, it probably has been
posted to PDML already.
If you don't see it there, you must have overlooked it.
:-)

Corollary 2 (my personal):
I prefer reading PDML as opposed to writing to it.
I try to suppress my urge of posting when I can.
:-)

Just in. I got the response that it may be an online thing where it
randomly pulls down images from the net. I suppose that it is not
something like the old After Dark screen saver which you have to
install in your computer. Not that I use screen savers or stay online
to look at my desktop all the time ...

Using these as subject-line email headers allows the use of filters

a separate mailbox so that I can deal with those apart from the
regular discussions of previous, current, and future Pentax

It looks to me that it's always been so. When I subscribed to Oentax Gallery
(before I had any picture accepted), I already noticed that 90% of already
published pictures were scenics and wildlife, hence I was a bit discouraged
(not shooting such genre). However, at that time my hit rate was about 60%.
I've sent them no picture of mine during the last 6 months or so.

Re: Pentax Gallery

I agree. No matter the subject, there is no question that it's much
more difficult to get an image accepted now than was the case in the
beginning.
Not disagreeing with Paul that there may be a genre sensitive policy in
place, but it's clear that landscapes bounce back as declined freely
and with very little hesitation.

1x Nature (accepted)

http://www.arach.net.au/~savage/PESO/images/_IGP2602.jpg

(This one gives extra weight to Mark's thumbnail theory)

The 3 that were declined were done so in only a couple of days.

But I'm quite please that at least 1 made it through :-)

Dramatic landscapes or major wildlife (600/4 territory) seem to dominate
these
 days.

Last time I looked there were around 20 images posted taken with a 600. I
had a majority of them.
I've recently submitted a few more taken with the 600, all were rejected.

I'm beginning to think that somehow posters with a lot of accepted images

You may be right. You have submitted some great stuff and I would
expect your level of submissions to be fairly consistent. If they are
rejecting as you surmise, it would be good of them to let us know so
that we don't waste time and bandwidth. I have always felt that the
final judges should be the ones to really finalize. In essence, the
peer voting would be to narrow it down to 'potential' candidates. So
if there were some quite good images, they should probably make it to
the final judges rather than the peer vote removing them.

And just how would that work, exactly?

The minute you put a 'peer voting' process in place before the final
judges get to see an image you're going to end up with images being
rejected at the peer voting stage (if not, then the peer voting stage
serves absolutely no purpose). Peer voting narrowing the list down
to potential candidates is, in effect, what is happening today.

Re: Pentax Gallery

2007-12-14 Thread Bruce Dayton
I first posted it here to get ideas on cropping - only one person
suggested taking out everything but the boy - everyone else felt there
was some context to be had by leaving some of the teammates in.
Thanks for your thoughts. I am trying to figure out what is worth
submitting these days.

Re: Pentax Gallery

2007-12-14 Thread Bruce Dayton
I may do that - my reason to ask here is to see if most people also
feel it should have been rejected or not. If most do, then it isn't
worth resubmitting and I learn something more about my photos. For
this one, I felt it was better than a quick rejection - but maybe I'm
wrong.

I was better than a quick rejection, but I doubt that you could get it
accepted. I don't think it's what they're looking for. Fair? Maybe not, but
that seems to be the way things are.

I don't think I would have expected that photo to make the cut, Bruce.
The bar is set very high these days. That photo has just enough
shortcomings (composition and lighting, in my opinion) to keep it out.
Not long ago it might have been accepted, but they're being *very*
picky these days.
