The noise only seems to show up on the OOF background. Don't know what
you can do about the Cardinal, but the little Woodpecker you might be
able to apply a Gaussian Blur to the green parts on either side of the
tree and effectively hide the noise.

IF the noise bothers you.

We have just come back from 11 days in Tassie, nice spot, a bit like a
smaller version of NZ with less snow LOL

I'm still editing from December, at one point I shot 10 shows in as
many days, about 20k images all up.

Cheers,

Gonz,
Excellent photos of a beautiful place.
Hope your trip went well beyond photography.
It is a place for visual gluttony!

Here you go... a couple of quick & dirty renderings from 6x7 scans, uncropped.
I must have been late for the actual sunset but I suspect the light would have
been difficult as everything would be in shadow. You'd need to be there at the
right time of year.

I have some sunset photos from there but they're not immediately handy. I
wasn't up early enough the following morning to get the sunrise but the local

Re: PESO, GESO New Zealand pics

2018-02-05 Thread Gonz
Thanks Paul. The color of the water was amazing. What I found
fascinating is how much the color varied depending on the angle of the
sun. Or just a little cloudiness and the color would change from
aquamarine to dark blue in an instant. I had a couple of pics only a
minute or so apart and the water color would be different like that.

I think its our favorite place too. As soon as we landed back home, I
was already searching for low cost flights to get back there perhaps
at the end of the year again.

I also have to reduce the photo sizes by 20 to 30 % to see them.

Thanks Cotty. Speaking of sailing, they said that Cp Cook missed
Milford Sound because the entrance is so well hidden. The pics 2295
and 2297 show the entrance and in 2295 you can see a ship going in.
>From the picture, the whole bay there looks like its closed, but the
huge sound goes in quite deep into the island through that narrow
entrance which is impossible to see unless you're right on top of it.

Still processing many of the pics from the trip down in the
upside-down. New Zealand is quite beautiful with its many snow capped
mountains, out-of-this-world blue lakes, and many fjords. The south
island is extraordinary and was the sight of much of the filming for
Lord of the Rings as many already know. My wife complained that she
was exhausted from so many beautiful sights at every turn, she called
it visual gluttony. The wineries are fantastic with some delicious
Pinots and Chardonnay.

Lovely. I'm jealous about that flight, what incredible views. Nice to see you
had clear weather at Milford Sound because it's one of the wettest places in
the world. It's also spectacular in the rain so you wouldn't have been
disappointed either way.

2017-08-14 Thread Jack Davis
I gather these and others previously
posted were all shot on your
property. (?)
They're consistently in a complimentary natural setting. As
you may have noticed my back
yard bird catches are always on
a weathering cedar fence.
Good work, Paul!

You can watch LIVE coverage from Alaska's Brooks River in Katmai National
Park. Every year over a hundred Brown Bears descend on a mile long stretch
of Brooks River to feast on the largest Sockeye Salmon run in the world.

Right now, one can see salmon trying to jump over the falls, and grizzlies
in the river looking for a meal.

GESO: Critter Pics

2017-02-18 Thread Paul Stenquist
A beautiful day in Michigan, sunny with a high of about 63 degrees F. Spent a
couple of hours in a nearby nature center shooting the critters. Good times.
All with the D FA 150-450 and K-1.

These are great. I would hate to do wedding photography for a living though.
One afternoon wedding I attended many years ago, I was asked - along with
others - to give the family some of the photos I took, as the official
photographer turned up worse for wear from an earlier event.

Re: Beautiful bird pics

2016-08-11 Thread Gonz
Hi Bruce. Yeah, I would love to capture something like that. There
are flocks of birds around here during different seasons that swirl
around like that and it would be fun to get images like this. I don't
think I have a camera with a deep enough buffer to capture that many
consecutive images tho. I wonder if the K1 does, but from other
threads, this sounds doubtful.

Mini PDML in Oxford, pics to follow

2016-07-02 Thread Steve Cottrell
Some may remember veteran PDMLer Christian Skofteland from a few years
back. He and his wife Kerry and daughter Alex were just finishing a 2
week visit to London and popped over to Oxford where Alma and I met them
for lunch and a wander about. Sadly no Pentax cameras were involved, and
although I carried a couple of Pentax lenses in my bag all day, it was
the Samyang 12/2 that inevitably played the main role today aboard my
Pen F. Really pleased with the results and so I'll put together a
gallery shortly for perusal.

I first met Christian back in 2004 at the start of my first trip to GFM
with the likes of Tom Van Veen, dear Cesar and the inimitable Tanja. We
had beers at a micro-brewery in Virginia (or was it DC?) and although
Christian didn't attend the NC trip, he has kept in touch ever since. He
makes a few business trips to the UK and we meet for a beer. Decent
bloke and the only person I know who named his daughter after a Pentax
camera. True.

Pics soon.

Good point, so I did a separate PESO. He thinks about the K1 24/7.
When he finally gets one, I’m not sure he’ll know what to spend his time
thinking about.

That "K1 24/7" - got me thinking for a moment: "What is that very exotic
lens?.."

The next step after K1 will be 15-30/2.8 (unless Sigma will come out with
a FF version of 15-30/1.8).

There is always some new fetish!.. ;-)

Cheers,

Igor

On a separate note, I need to check that lens, it wasn’t focusing well
at all...

I've been less then completely happy with FA 50/1.4 + K-7 & K-5 IIs
while shooting dances in low light @ f/1.4. I've even had the lens checked
by the Pentax repair master.
I like the performance of 35/1.8 and 77/1.8 (Limiteds) under the same
conditions much-much better.

Yes, the very low light conditions meant I had to shoot at f/1.4 and hope.
Thank you for the feedback on the photos — selecting/pruning down photos is
something I struggle with, and I really appreciate getting your opinion as well
as the rationale behind it. I really wish the guy in NAJ54762 had a more
interesting expression — ah, well, perhaps I selected it for the photo I hoped
for. I kinda like 54533, but I have to agree with you on 54780 — I wish the
focus was reversed.

Nicole,

I enjoyed looking at this series.
The first thought that popped up in my mind after looking at these photos
was the same as what I've written about your previous series from a dance
event: I enjoy the way you are framing these photos.
Having seen tons of dance-event photos, I think it is one of the
main things that make such photos interesting and powerful.

From that perspective, I'd say that lack of focus on the guy in
NAJ54780.jpg makes it not as strong. In a similar way,
having a deeper DOF in NAJ54762.jpg, so that the woman were also in
focus would be great, but I understand that you were shooting at f/1.4 due
to the low light. (And the guy's facial expression is not exactly
inspiring/-ed.)
Also, I am not sure if this photo is as interesting as the rest:
NAJ54533.jpg .
I think the rest of the photos are much stronger, so you might
consider just skipping these three.

PS. I thought you should've posted the masterpiece photo not at the
end of the other thread where some people might just skip it, but either

I didn’t get to spend as much time editing as I’d like, unfortunately —
this is the crazy season at work before our big developers conference… I
did have a chance to play with my 360 degree camera on the dance floor
though. I haven’t had a chance to do anything with those yet. Hopefully
there’ll be something interesting there to share.

I think it depends on the browser you're using. Some of them choke on
the colon at the end of the link.

I'm using Pale Moon v: 26.2.1 (x86) and it opened the link with no problems.

I'm green with envy.

On the bright side, the K-1 looks like a bit hit. That should drive
down prices of used K-3s, perhaps permitting me to updrade from my K-5
IIs, although I am certainly not dissatisfied with it.
