When the dark blue car in one of my most prized pictures of myself rolled off
the assembly line it was a midget.
The only way that you'd be able to tell now, would be some bondoed over holes
in the fenders.

The skinny guy in those pictures was me 28 years, and more than twice as many

He came out to Santa Cruz for the Sprite's 25th anniversary event.

They seem to be too busy squabbling among themselves at the moment to pay any
attention to foreigners. I must say it's very entertaining from over here.

AFAIK you don't need any shots for Australia, unless perhaps you're going
northwards into the tropical part where they'll undoubtedly have mosquitoes. I
don't think it's possible to immunise against crocodiles, jellyfish, sharks,
spiders and snakes. Better make sure you carry an indigestible form of ID so
your family can be informed afterwards.

Here's one that I just can't decide about:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/6776651850/in/set-72157629070296314/

A friend was doing his laundry yesterday, and this ducting caught my eye. I
tried a few different things with it. It's hard to get the same interesting
shade of orange I saw in the laundry room too. I suspect that it might just be

I'd suggest that the only hope for it is to start by eliminating the white down
the right edge. Might flip it to horizontal, either to the right or left, and
assign some significance to the center separation and tilt of the half of the
ducts.
My sense is, however, that I haven't the imagination to pull this off
successfully.

Re: Question: Sell K7 to buy K-01?

2012-02-23 Thread Steven Desjardins
I appreciate the advice about KEH. They really aren't my first choice
at all, but their email sparked this line of thought. I would
certainly try the PDML first. My problem is that the K7 gets almost
no use anymore, as I tend to grab the E-P2 or X-10. This leads me to
wonder if I should sell it now while it still has some value.

This is a real question for me.  KEH will be nearby on Saturday, and
it got me to thinking about selling my K7 to buy the K-01, given that
the latter will  have a much better sensor, electronics, and hence IQ.

What Jack said...

But if you have a chance to do it again, I would shoot it from an
angle closer to the wall on the left and lower to be as perpendicular
as possible to the middle two, that way they all have more or less
equal 'weight' and then flip it to the horizontal (either way--but am
biased to clockwise with the wall on top).

Have not tried to look at these recently, but i know in the past, i

Not sure if either the D1 or K-10 will sell locally. I have no lenses

Our tour also included Canberra and I would NOT recommend it,
particularly if time is precious. I would have MUCH rather had another
two days in Melbourne or roving around Sydney than that long slog.
Being a fairly recently manufactured capital city, Canberra is far too
modern to be interesting (for my tastes). There is a big War Museum
there, if you are a military buff, but I don't recall much more
terribly beautiful or interesting about the place.

Re: OT: What to see in southeastern Australia? (Melbourne/Sydney)

2012-02-23 Thread Stan Halpin
A travel/adventure writer, Bill Bryson, has done a series of books including
hitchhiking in Europe, through-hiking the Appalachian Trail, and traveling
through Australia. I thought the Australia book was a good read. I particularly
enjoyed his description of Canberra, and having read it I was spared a shock;
Canberra is unlike any other city you are ever likely to visit. I was in
Canberra briefly, Sunday evening through Thursday morning, at the tail end of a
working trip that included stops in (and PDML meetings in) Adelaide, Melbourne,
and Sydney. I think Canberra is worth the trip for the art museum alone, the
tour of the Parliament building was an added extra. Don't expect any nightlife!
And there is always a time-distance and travel-mode tradeoff; Canberra: a) was
built for cars; and b) was situated a long way from Melbourne, Sydney, and
anything else of importance in the country. Se getting there and getting around
may cost more time than you are willing/able to spend.

Here's one that I just can't decide about:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/6776651850/in/set-72157629070296314/

A friend was doing his laundry yesterday, and this ducting caught my eye.
I tried a few different things with it. It's hard to get the same
interesting shade of orange I saw in the laundry room too. I suspect that
it might just be a boring pile of shite, but since I put a fair amount of
effort into it, I really want to believe that it's actually a decent

i suppose you can learn something from that, though the sample will be

No. Just lying ;-)
Seriously, "highest *market* prices" just means within the market
consisting of camera retailers looking to buy product which they can
re-sell at a profit. Don't expect anything to really change.

I don't wanna try alternatives *before* the M, if the M is nice but

Looking at the number of suggestions, I want to warn against something I
always have a problem with - trying to do *too much* on one trip. You
end up with many of the things you really want to do not getting the
attention they deserve; especially as the end of the trip nears.

Better to plan on seeing/doing a few less things on this trip & start
scheming how you're going to manage to make the NEXT trip happen so you
can see/do the rest.

Re: Leica M but which one?

2012-02-23 Thread p. j. alling
If you're using film, forget about a meter with a Leica and learn the
characteristics of Tri-X, Most of my shooting with the Spotmatic II
and Tri-X was well beyond the metering capability of the camera. In
fact the first time I had a camera who's meter was even close to as
good as a trained eye was my LX. Heck man you're using film.

By the way, since the resale value of used Leicas is pretty close to
the purchase price, any good condition specimen that you buy is a
bargain. You can probably sell it for nearly as much as you paid for
it. Maybe more than you paid for it if you're lucky.

PESO - Bricks and Shadows

2012-02-23 Thread George Sinos
The afternoon sun casts dramatic shadows along the downtown skyline. I
particularly like this detail. This shadow only appears for a few
weeks in the winter due to the orientation of the buildings and the
low angle of the sun in the sky.

This photo has been in my library since 2007. This version had been
lightly reprocessed through Photomatix in an attempt to coax a little
more detail out of the shadow area near the windows. I had only
bracketed plus or minus 1 stop. At the time I hadn't planned on using
HDR, I just bracketed because it seemed like a good idea. I recently
decided to give HDR a try to see what would happen. I'm fairly happy
with the outcome.

GESO after dinner photo walk

2012-02-23 Thread John Sessoms

From: Larry Colen

I've been in a bit of a photographic funk lately, not really excited
about anything I've gotten. I tried to shake it off by going for a
walk around Pacific Ave in Santa Cruz after dinner, then a quick
drive down to the wharf. While there isn't anything particularly
outstanding, I think I got a few entertaining shots. It was nice
weather, so the hippies were out in force. What's the collective
noun for hippies? Tribe? Deadshow? Anyways, they actually had
someone pretty decent on the trumpet, so their impromptu bardic
circle on the sidewalk actually sounded better than most.

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157629434946815/

I'd love to see what Knarf would do given a K-5 and a couple hours on
a warm night in Santa Cruz.

Hippies *is* the collective (i.e. plural) noun. "Hippie" when there's
only one of them.

Although, technically it should always be preceded with the modifier OLD.

You don't really see REAL hippies anymore. The ones who are left kind of
blended into the background - camouflaged as it were. Most of us
eventually got married, got jobs, bought houses (joined the Army believe
it or not) - maybe had a lot of kids ... and too many started voting
republican.

But if you want to find REAL hippies, look for old farts hanging around
together to the tune of John Prine, Tom Paxton, Phil Ochs ...

What you have just looked like a bunch of kids hanging out - something
that started long before hippiedom and will still be around long after
the last of us is gone.

"ZA Y ART" would be the best, were it framed a little better.

PESO: Winter Bloom

2012-02-23 Thread Paul Stenquist
I have two orchid plants. Both were blooming when purchased. One is now four
years old and appears healthy but has never bloomed again. The other one is
just a year old and bloomed this week for the first time. I shot a pic of a
single bloom lit by the window behind it. A bit of distraction in the bokeh
patterning but a nice bloom for a gray day.

A friend was doing his laundry yesterday, and this ducting caught my
eye. I tried a few different things with it. It's hard to get the
same interesting shade of orange I saw in the laundry room too. I
suspect that it might just be a boring pile of shite, but since I put
a fair amount of effort into it, I really want to believe that it's
actually a decent photo.

Leave it for six months. When you come back to it, try rotating 90 deg

Re: Leica M but which one?

2012-02-23 Thread Paul Stenquist
I bought both of my thread-mount Leicas on ebay. No problem if you only deal
with people who have numerous sales and a 100% rating. If you buy a meterless
Leica, you can get a meter that attaches to the flash shoe or use a handheld
meter. A handheld incident meter is superior to most in-camera meters. The M4
is probably a good choice if price is important. It's also a nice camera. The
thread-mount Leicas, like the IIIf and IIIc, are nice as well and quite
affordable, but loading film is tricky until you get the hang of it.

Paul,
Nice shot and well staged, good point of focus.
I especially appreciated the uncluttered background.
If the other orchid is a phalaenopsis like this one,
put them both in ths same light and just wait.
We have a bunch in a north facing bay window that bloom regularly/continuously.
If the other is a cattleya or dendrobium, it needs light and cold -
forget about it!

Thanks Bob. Looking at the leaves, the two plants appear to be the same
variety. It's been so long since the other one bloomed, I can't remember
exactly what the flowers looked like, but I think they were similar in shape to
these. They might have been fringed with lavender or magenta. Both plants are
h in a north window and growing in orchid planting material, so I'll just be
patient and see if the other one eventually blooms. It has grown larger over
the years. I water lightly once a week and fertilize lightly about once a month.

I have two orchid plants. Both were blooming when purchased. One is now four
years old and appears healthy but has never bloomed again. The other one is
just a year old and bloomed this week for the first time. I shot a pic of a
single bloom lit by the window behind it. A bit of distraction in the bokeh

Based on memory, since the link now produces a "No photos here..."
message, and it "Couldn't find a user matching username 'ellarsee'" - I
think much of the black space above and to the right is superfluous.

White space, or in this case black space, can be an important element,
but it should bring the eye to the other elements. Here it doesn't.

So, get rid of everything that doesn't draw your eye into the main
element of the image.

BTW, looking at the images in larger size, which I managed to figure out
how to do after posting the previous, I think you may have found one
hippie there - that older guy sitting by himself on the bench, playing
guitar; almost hidden behind the rice rocket.

Live and learn

2012-02-23 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
Looks like my choice of the K-r for a commercial environment was not
well-considered. Initially I was going to be shooting cleaned parts. But as
time has gone on the situation has changed. Now I'm handling parts that are
still covered in tranny fluid. And that has migrated to the camera. A major
frustration. Some contamination has occurred -- probably transfer from my
thumb to the camera controls. The wheel/dial now goes only up, never down, in
value. So tomorrow it is going off to Pentax for (warranty) service. In the
mean time I'm going to dig up a K-5 (with extended warranty) for the main body
and relegate the K-r to backup status.

I wish all camera functions could be controlled remotely, on a keypad built for
a harsh environment. Might be a great commercial solution ...

I'm not even sure a K5 would survive. I don't think weather sealing
if aimed at hydrocarbon based compounds which can react with plastic
or rubber components. Maybe an assistant to handle the parts while
you handle the camera would work better.

I have an M3 and had an M4-2 for several years as well. There isn't much to
choose between them. In your position I think the best thing to do would be
buy whatever is least expensive and in decent user condition. I would not
buy one of eBay because there are chop & paste jobs out there and you have
no comeback if you end up with a dog. I've bought all my Leica stuff from
reputable dealers, and even so I once ended up with a real pig of a lens
that I eventually threw in the bin.

The principal differences between the different types of M are detailed in
many places, but essentially come down to the number of framelines,
viewfinder magnification, film loading system, ability to use a winder, and
a couple of other things. M4-2s are less highly thought of than the
German-made cameras, but frankly it doesn't really matter. With M3s there's
a difference between 2-stroke and 1-stroke shutter levers (they're not
petrol-driven, it's what you have to do to wind the film on). 1-stroke is
easier to use.

I agree with whoever suggested buying a meterless M.

You could probably do a bit with ziplock bags, clear packing tape, screen
protectors or some variation of the above.
I'd also recommend picking up an IR shutter release, and maybe some latex
gloves for when you're handling parts.

I have the IR release. It has been quite helpful. Latex gloves would be too
much or a hassle, though they are available.
I'm still leaning towards some hand cleaner and paper towels. It seems
simplest.
