Re: [Phono-L] eBay Shilling??

2012-03-05 Thread Aphonomike
Years ago at a local auction I watched an Amberola 30 go for $750.00. A
few weeks later I ran into the winning bidder and we got to talking about
phonographs and I asked if he had any for sale. He said he had an Amberola 30
for sale and I responded (before I could edit my mouth from my brain) "You
will have to find someone else who does not know what they are doing to buy
that one".

I can usually win a bid against a dealer and sometimes a collector, but I
can never win a bid from someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

The problem with bidding early is as vinyl states. Also the bidder has a

Sneak attacks are better, last second bidding. Why show your cards? And
never forget the person that will BUI, bid under the influence. eBay
encourages proxy bidding for a reason. They don't call 'em bidding wars for
no reason.

Believe it or not.. When I was living in Guam, the local Ace Hardware carried
piano string wire that I could use for restringing pianos! And our local Ace
in Denver used to carry all kinds of wierd stuff. Now that they have been
acquired by the corporate office, the selection is no better than the other
hardware stores. So much for corporate ownership of local small businesses!

It is a contract and they must pay. Check the high bidder's feedback and see if
a negative was left by the seller over the next few days. If not, chances are
it was shilling.

Allen,The original bidder placed an automatic proxy bid for $1,000. The second
guy, who apparently is not knowledgeable at all, kept bidding against the proxy
bid until his bid exceeded $1,000. So, it appeared that he was bidding against
himself, but in actuality he was bidding against an already placed automatic
bid. Luckily for the first bidder, the second guy outbid his ridiculous proxy
bid.Curt

You often see auctions with only one bidder, who is bidding against himself.
In reality, he is bidding against the reserve price, since he doesn't know its
amount.

Two possible ways to get a long series from the same bidder. In one
scenario, there is a higher bidder, and the new bidder keeps entering higher
and higher bids to try to outbid that higher bidder. In the second
scenario, a bidder enters one bid and then enters several others so as to
increase his original bid. You won't see any of those later bids until a
higher bidder enters the auction, and then all the other bids the first
bidder entered will appear that are up to the higher bidder, and one bid (if
one was entered) that exceeds the higher bidder.

If you go back and look real hard at that machine you will note that it
is far from prime condition. The belt tensoiner looks to be missing in
action and the top does not aper to have a matchng finish but this may
be lighting. The corrosion on several parts is nota good sign though.

I bet it is the video that sold it though.

Check this out..here is an Edison Standard going for over $1,000 on eBay. The
interesting thing is, one bidder placed 13 consecutive bids within a few
minutes, bidding against himself each time, and taking the price from $599 to
$1000. I call shilling. What do you think??

Re: [Phono-L] eBay Shilling??

2012-03-03 Thread Mike Stitt
The problem with bidding early is as vinyl states. Also the bidder has a
feeling of ownership. That is to say if someone bids they are taking your
item away and you will "attack" with a new and higher bid. I use attack
because that is just what the lizard brain does...Someone took it away.
Sneak attacks are better, last second bidding. Why show your cards? And
never forget the person that will BUI, bid under the influence. eBay
encourages proxy bidding for a reason. They don't call 'em bidding wars for
no reason.

Actually, this is the problem with placing "proxy" bids early on eBay. He
probably did not want to pay $1,000, but definitely wanted the machine and
didn't want to be sniped at the end, so placed a high proxy bid to avoid being
outbid. However, he didn't take into account the nutcase OCD bidders who will
keep bumping the bid until they discover your limit. Why does anyone bid days
ahead on eBay, since it's not an actual auction anyway? The only thing that
counts is the last bid.

Re: [Phono-L] eBay Shilling??

2012-03-03 Thread Glenn Longwell
Regarding the crank on Standards. My Standard A has the slotted crank as I
thought they all did. So I checked Frow's book and he also says the A had a
slotted crank. The Standard B's had threaded cranks. Is it possible your
banner machine is the early Standard B that had the banner? My early B with
banner has the threaded crank. The easiest way to tell if you have an A or B
banner is whether the speed control knob is present above the bedplate on the
front left of the machine. If it's there it's a Standard A. The B is also
taller but that's not easy to tell if you don't have both machines to compare.

It's probably someone who doesn't know what the machine is worth, they
both have lots of feedback (the bidders). I can't imagine paying more than
500 bucks for that machine. The one interesting thing of note is that it
has a slotted crank, not threaded. My banner standard A has a threaded
crank and so have all the others I have seen. It must be relatively early.

2012-03-03 Thread john robles
Really? All banner Standard As I have had or seen the black slotted crank. The
early banner Standard B had a threaded crank. The difference between the A and
b Banner machines is that the A had the speed control knob above the bedplate,
the B had the speed control below the bedplate. Are you sure your Standards
were A models?

John

A yeah. I get it. I find it amazing anyone would bid that much
for a Standard though.
