[PHP] Download

2001-09-19 Thread Ashley M. Kirchner

Okay, so since www.php.net and de.php.net are unreachable, I hit
us.php.net. Worked. Went to downloads, clicked on the Complete Source
link and to my surprise it went back to trying to contact www.php.net.
Well, that don't do me any good.

Anyone have any suggestions for getting the current sources?

 Hi,

 I know my question might be a little bit strange but I am really
 thinking for the posiblity.

 Suppose we have a page and on it a button link to a backend
 script. When click the button, at the server side the scritp will
 be called. My question is, how can we program the script that
 just let to do something on server but not to send out a return
 to browser, so at client end the page will be stay unchanged.

 Can any one here have an idea how to do this?

 Alex

[PHP] Returning a specific 'record' from an XML file

2001-09-19 Thread Stefen Lars

Hello all

I am looking for a PHP example or tutorial that shows how it is possible to
return one particular record (is that the correct terminology for an XML
file?) from an XML file. For example, consider this very simple XML file:

?xml version=1.0?

library
book
titleHannibal/title
authorThomas Harris/author
genreSuspense/genre
pages564/pages
price8.99/price
rating4/rating
/book
book
titleRun/title
authorDouglas E. Winter/author
genreThriller/genre
pages390/pages
price7.49/price
rating5/rating
/book
book
titleHannibal - the return/title
authorThomas Harris/author
genreSuspense/genre
pages586/pages
price21.12/price
rating10/rating
/book
/library

I would like to be able to say, give me all the data from books written by
author 'Thomas Harris'. In this case, I would be returned with the first and
last 'record' from the above file. It would then be possible to loop through
the resulting array like one can do with mysql_fetch_array and co.

I know that to perform such a query in MySQL is a piece of cake, but I am
currently interested in learning a little more about XML handling.

If someone could point me in the correct direction to learn how do this, I
would be very grateful.

Also, if anyone thinks that using XML for such an application is completely
wrong, please also say that.

Thank you in advance

[PHP] developing sub menus

In thinking this through, would you recommend a function within the array to
create a menu? I could pass a submenu id in the query string and if it is

build that menu. Here is the original message for thoughts.

I want to be
able to pull up all the items for navigation on the left menu, then each
item might have a sub item underneath it, but I only want to call them
when you are on that section. The code is below.
Example, when you first hit the page you will see 5 sections on the left,
clicking one of them will open that page and the SUB pages under it.
So, you would see
Alex

On the first page, click Alex and you would see:

RE: [PHP] Getting IP address

A better version would be:

if (getenv(HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR)) {

$ip=getenv(HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR);
} else {
$ip=getenv(REMOTE_ADDR);
}

This checks for proxy forwarding as well, if you just use REMOTE_ADDR you
might end up with a proxy, not the real IP.

Hi Girish,

I installed PHP within D:\PHP. This folder currently has two sub-directories
'sessiondata' and 'uploadtemp'. There does not appear to be an extensions
sub-directory with a load of other dlls in there too. Anyway I created an
'extensions' sub-directory and placed the php_gd.dll into it. I changed the
php.ini extension_dir line to point to this directory:

ie:
extension_dir = D:\PHP\extensions\

But the problem still occurs, only now the second alert box reads:
Unable to load dynamic library 'D:\PHP\extensions\php_gd.dll' - The specified

Any ideas?

  I have downloaded the windows version of GD (php_gd.dll) as I wish to
  use it's various image functions. I have edited my PHP.INI file in
  C:\WINNT and uncommented the line:

  extension=php_gd.dll

  Where is a suitable location for this .dll file? And what should I set
  this PHP.INI line to?

  extension_dir = ./

  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I have a php page that accepts post values (ie;

Now there can be posted values between var(1) and var(10) and i want to

these values in a loop ie;-

for($i=1;$i=10;$i++){

Hi,

i was trying to figure this out myself. But since the php-manual is down...

I want to create a string with todays date and month in the format day/month

If i do:

$date = $date_time_array[ mday];
$month = $date_time_array[ mon];

I get the day and month in numbers. But how do i join $date and $month and

Well, presumably you could split $ip into an array based on whatever the
delimiter is. I just use this snippet for our intranet where everything
comes through exactly one proxy.

 'sessiondata' and 'uploadtemp'. There does not appear to be an extensions

an
 'extensions' sub-directory and placed the php_gd.dll into it. I changed
the
 php.ini extension_dir line to point to this directory:

 ie:

 But the problem still occurs, only now the second alert box reads:
 Unable to load dynamic library 'D:\PHP\extensions\php_gd.dll' - The

 Any ideas?

 WHERE substr(SendDate, 0, 2)=19;

 and i've tried the damn thing with brackets around all different parts.

Try to figure out the damn difference between PHP substr() SQL SUBSTRING().

 thanks much,

[PHP] Protecting variables and functions? Like C#

2001-09-19 Thread Emile Bosch

I am a huge fan of php but i am kinda scared by c# i really like it's
ability to make functions and variable not accessible and therefore force
the user to use a function instead of accessing it indirectly. I am talking
here about

class talk {
private function bla() {
}
}

$t = new talk();
$t-bla(); /* Produces an error cuz of calling a private function */

Is something like that gonna be implemented in the future? And maybe with a
setting or somethgin, PHP strict=true? i don't know..

Warm regards,
Emile Bosch

hi, don:

thanks a lot for the tip. and thanks even more for echoing the poor tone
i used in my post--i will try to avoid writing such posts in the future.
after looking at the documentation (many connection problems today), i
was able to write this, like i wanted:

SELECT User, SendDate FROM $table_name

thanks again,

Re: [PHP] Protecting variables and functions? Like C#

2001-09-19 Thread Tim

This would certainly be a nice feature to have, especially if you've
done any development with Java or C++ in the past.

Many PHP class authors adopt a convention that variables or functions
that start or end in an underscore (_) should be treated as private
and used at your own risk, i.e. they may change in a future release of
the class or not work properly/safely when accessed directly.

[PHP] Re: Returning a specific 'record' from an XML file

2001-09-19 Thread Emile Bosch

uhm i think XMLSLT sabletron thingie is the solution, it makes it possible
to get records as u so call it from an XML file. It works pretty good as far
as i know..!

Good luck!

Stefen Lars [EMAIL PROTECTED] schreef in berichtnieuws
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Hello all

 I am looking for a PHP example or tutorial that shows how it is possible
to
 return one particular record (is that the correct terminology for an XML
 file?) from an XML file. For example, consider this very simple XML file:

 ?xml version=1.0?

 library
 book
 titleHannibal/title
 authorThomas Harris/author
 genreSuspense/genre
 pages564/pages
 price8.99/price
 rating4/rating
 /book
 book
 titleRun/title
 authorDouglas E. Winter/author
 genreThriller/genre
 pages390/pages
 price7.49/price
 rating5/rating
 /book
 book
 titleHannibal - the return/title
 authorThomas Harris/author
 genreSuspense/genre
 pages586/pages
 price21.12/price
 rating10/rating
 /book
 /library

 I would like to be able to say, give me all the data from books written by
 author 'Thomas Harris'. In this case, I would be returned with the first
and
 last 'record' from the above file. It would then be possible to loop
through
 the resulting array like one can do with mysql_fetch_array and co.

 I know that to perform such a query in MySQL is a piece of cake, but I am
 currently interested in learning a little more about XML handling.

 If someone could point me in the correct direction to learn how do this, I
 would be very grateful.

 Also, if anyone thinks that using XML for such an application is
completely
 wrong, please also say that.

 Thank you in advance

 /S

 that I need to provide underlined links to click on, not submit buttons.
 The second, though less important, is that I'd like users to be able to
 bookmark the resulting page and later access it directly with the variable
 included.

 In addition to passing the variable I need to pass an anchor name, so that
 the resulting page loads to the correct place. I can't seem to make this
 work correctly. Either the variable gets lost or the anchor doesn't work in
 IE (depending on where I put the quotes in my referrring page).

 Does anyone know how to make this work, or how to pass a variable to a form
 without the querystring and without a submit button?

 Thanks so much in advance,
 Rebecca

2001-09-19 Thread Tim

Private methods and variables are necessary for any serious language
that supports class libraries, IMHO. There are currently some manual
methods (i.e. naming conventions) of accomplishing this, but for the
best results it should be enforced by the compiler/interpreter.

Some might also say that strong typing (or at least more formal typing)
is a requirement, but I'm quite happy without all the related hoops that
C++/Java makes you jump through...that alone is enough to give the
average PHP developer a big boost in productivity vs. those languages.

[PHP] PHP 4.0.6 + Oracle9i + CPDF lib - large file problem (segmentation fault)

2001-09-19 Thread Marcin Floryan

Hello!

I have a problem with my php script. I am creating a report in PDF based on
data in the Oracle9i database. To access Oracle I use OCI and to create PDF
files I use ClibPDF 2.02.

The problem is with the ammount of data - there are currently some 2000
records and are expected to be some 12000. This means that the output report
has now 100 pages and may have much more (up to, say, 500).

With that ammount of data I naturally create the PDF as a file (not in
memory). As a result the file seems to be created properly but the output
from PHP script (which is simply the link to the created file) does not
appear. The browser displays an error message and in my httpd error_log I
get:
[Wed Sep 19 14:12:25 2001] [notice] child pid 14090 exit signal Segmentation
fault (11)

Have any Ideas? What is the sorce of the problem. It doesn't appear if I
limit the number of selected records.

I have already done the following:

* Set cpdf global limits to satisfy my needs:
   cpdf_global_set_document_limits(500,5,1,5,2);

* Open pdf document as a file
   $PDF = cpdf_open(1,$file);

* Finalize each page (what cost me not having the total number of pages
printed on each page)
  cpdf_finalize_page ($GLOBALS[PDF], $pages-1);

Any thing more I could do? Unfortunatelly there is no PHP error shown or
logged.

Best regards.

[PHP] Still no solution...can anyone help?

2001-09-19 Thread Michael O'Neal

Hi,

I'm creating a PHP/MySQL photo gallery app and I'm having problem with my
edit page. I want the user to be able to change any of the fields in the
record. In this case there are two text fields, and two file fields where
they can browse to replace the images that are currently in the database.
The file fields send a variable of none if the user doesn't change it.
So, what I've done is created an if/else statement that says if these fields
DON'T = none, then do the SQL. However, I didn't account for the user
just updating ONE of the image fields. (Which still sends none for the
image field that *doesn't* get updated. Below is what I have so far:

?php

if (($userfile_th)  ($userfile_full)  ($userfile_th  $userfile_full !=
none)) {

$db_name = wonderland;
$table_name = photo;
$connection = @mysql_connect($db_loc,$db_user,$db_pass) or
die(Couldn't Connect.);
$db = @mysql_select_db($db_name, $connection) or die(Couldn't select
database.);

$sql =UPDATE $table_name set
title='$title',caption='$caption',thumbnail='$userfile_th_name',full_size='$
userfile_full_name' WHERE ID=\$ID\;
$result = @mysql_query($sql, $connection) or die(Couldn't execute query.);

copy($userfile_th,
/Users/emptyo/Sites/wonderland/images/gallery/thumbnail/$userfile_th_name)
;
copy($userfile_full,
/Users/emptyo/Sites/wonderland/images/gallery/full_size/$userfile_full_name
);

include(edit_photo_upd_suc.html);

}

else {

$db_name = wonderland;
$table_name = photo;
$connection = @mysql_connect($db_loc,$db_user,$db_pass) or
die(Couldn't Connect.);
$db = @mysql_select_db($db_name, $connection) or die(Couldn't select
database.);

$sql =UPDATE $table_name set title='$title',caption='$caption' WHERE
ID=\$ID\;
$result = @mysql_query($sql, $connection) or die(Couldn't execute query.);

include(edit_photo_upd_ok.php);

}

?

So, my question is, do I need to do a separate if/else statement for every
combination of what the user might want to change (Two text fields, and one
image, or both images and no text fields, or 1 text field and 1 image,
etc..) or is there a catch-all that might be able to do this for me?

I'm a pretty new PHP'er, so forgive me if this is an obvious question, or
there is a better way to do this.

Please respond directly to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as I am on the digest.

TIA,

mto

When distributing compiled or encoded libraries then private functions
become a good feature, since internal functions/methods that are subject to
upgrades are not exposed to the end programmer.

hi ;)
it's pretty simple to do something like this using the DOM functions that
handle XPath expressions.
when you have that xml loaded in a variable $xml_source all you have to do
is:
$doc=xmldoc($xmlsource);
$xpath_ctx = xpath_new_context($doc );
// show all objects
echo Xpath All;
$result = xpath_eval($xpath_ctx, '//child::*');
print_r($result); // this will show you the structure of the output
// all books objects
$result = xpath_eval($xpath_ctx, '//book::*');
print_r($result);
// book number one:
$result = xpath_eval($xpath_ctx, '//book[1]');
print_r($result);

xpath is much more powerful than that and i'm pretty sure you can use it the
way you want it.
some more info about XPath is available here:
http://www.zvon.org/xxl/XPathTutorial/General/examples.html

Good Luck with that ;)

Re: [PHP] Please help!!! Trying to write some chat script!

2001-09-19 Thread Sheridan Saint-Michel

There actually isn't much technology in a chat room. It is a fairly simple
program.

Basically you have a webpage which checks Someplace retrieves all
the messages from Someplace and prints them, then provides a place
for the user to enter stuff into Someplace.

Someplace can be any number of things such as a flat file, or a MySQL
database table. Basically anywhere you can stick stuff and anyone can
retrieve it.

The only thing left, then, is to update the page with new entries from time
to
time. While Netscape makes this easy with server push, you are probably
going to want something like a Meta Refresh so the IE people can use the
chat too.

You probably also want to put the form for entering new messages in its own
frame so that someone isn't halfway through writing a message when the whole
thing refreshes.

That's pretty much it. If you have any specific questions let me know.

Re: [PHP] Still no solution...can anyone help?

2001-09-19 Thread Anton Stroganov

I would suggest keeping one single image field, 'full size', and having the
thumbnails use the same name as the full image, with a prefix (ie, large
image: image1.jpg; thumbnail: tmb_image1.jpg). this way you would give a.
less work to your user and b. avoid unnecessary clutter. and on your pages,
you could simply say 'echo tmb_.$imagefile;' to show the thumbnail...
simple.

if you really wanted to, you could also code an upload/renaming page, which
could be used to upload a large image and automatically create a thumbnail.
But that's only a good idea if you have a late version of GD library, and
want your users to be able to add pics.

hope this helps.

 $db = @mysql_select_db($db_name, $connection) or die(Couldn't select

 $sql =UPDATE $table_name set title='$title',caption='$caption' WHERE
 ID=\$ID\;
 $result = @mysql_query($sql, $connection) or die(Couldn't execute
query.);

 include(edit_photo_upd_ok.php);

 }

 ?

 So, my question is, do I need to do a separate if/else statement for every
 combination of what the user might want to change (Two text fields, and
one
 image, or both images and no text fields, or 1 text field and 1 image,
 etc..) or is there a catch-all that might be able to do this for me?

 I'm a pretty new PHP'er, so forgive me if this is an obvious question, or
 there is a better way to do this.

 Please respond directly to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as I am on the digest.

 TIA,

 mto

My friend. I'm not quite sure I understand you correctly. Are you asking
_us_ to do _your_ work for you? Do you want us to give you a complete script
on a silver platter? This is a place where people like to see that you've
done a little bit of preliminary work, and ask specific questions.

Keeping that in mind, I'd suggest the following:

1. take a look at the mail() function in the manual
http://us.php.net/manual/en/function.mail.php

2. go to phpbuilder.com and look in the code library. There may be something
similar to what you're doing.

when you have a more specific question, feel free to ask :)

Re: [PHP] Still no solution...can anyone help?

2001-09-19 Thread Anton Stroganov

Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you were having users choose from already uploaded
files, not uploading their own. To answer this question, you can either

a. code the image resizing script, creating the thumbnail dynamically and
leaving one field to users, to upload the large image.
or

b. change your if() statement to something like this
if (($userfile_th)  ($userfile_full)  ($userfile_th || $userfile_full !=
none)) {
well, not sure about the exact syntax, but logically you want it to say
if(full exists and thumb exists and if either one does not equal none)
try it.

a.

 How would this solve the problem I'm having,though? Wouldn't the user
 *still* have to upload a thumbnail and a full size image?

[PHP] session screw up - any experience/hints for me?

2001-09-19 Thread Wolfram Kriesing

i am saving data in the session
lets say every page relates to specific session data, like:
page 1 sets sess_x=1,
page 2 sets sess_x=2
but if i use the history.back or the browsers back-button i can go from page
2 back to page 1 WITHOUT updating the session
so what i finally have is page 2 where sess_x=1 and that screws up the
logic at some point, since the session could not be updated because the page
the user sees came from the browser cache, which didnt necessitate an
interaction with the server, so the server thinks that the user sees
another page

how can i handle this stuff? or prevent it from happening?
or is my way of session handling weird?

thanks in advance

[PHP] preventing an include() from taking over?

2001-09-19 Thread LRW

I've got a complicated little thing going on here.
I have page INDEX.HTM with a 2 column table.
I want the entire page to remain the same, except column 1. In column 1 I
have an include() which contains a javascript scrolling menu where on click
of an option it calls up the selected page.
As it is, when it calls up that page, it replaces the whole of INDEX.HTM
with that page.

This may be more of an HTML question and not PHP, but is there a way to get
the resulting page from the scrolling menu to stay within the table column
that contains the include()?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: [PHP] preventing an include() from taking over?

2001-09-19 Thread Rick Gardner

Liam,
Assuming that you control the content that you are going to be feeding
into your column 1, I would set your page up such that it accepted a
variable passed in as part of the index.php url.
I would then establish separate files on the server for anything that
you would want as a choice of coming up in column1.
So the javascript function might be the default function, we'll call it
def. You might have a few other choices that the user could choose
choice1, choice2, and choice3 (these would be the data that the
user is requesting, and that you want to appear in column1).
Then I would modify the javascript such that it directs the user to
index.php?pg=choice1 if the user clicks on choice1.
Then I would modify the index.php page such that if no valid value is
passed in for $pg, it does an include(def);
However, if a valid value is passed into $pg, you would just do
include($pg);

Sorry for the poor explanation, does this help though?

$num = 0001000; sets $num to be 1000, not 0001000 binary.

As I'm not sure if PHP has a binary type, you can use hex:

?php

echo Number is $numBR;

[PHP] Sockets

2001-09-19 Thread Jonathan Hilgeman

I run a web application that opens a socket using cURL and sends data to a
payment gateway and then receives confirmations, etc... Sometimes, a visitor
clicks multiple times and I have the program check to see if a transaction
is already in process, and if so, it redirects them to a page where they can
check to see whether the transaction has gone through. So now I have 1
thread/request going, doing the processing, and returning the data, and a
second thread where the visitor can check to see if thread 1 has come back
from processing or not. Normally, this works okay.

SOMETIMES, thread 1 does not come back with data from the gateway, as if the
connection had timed out. Sometimes the gateway has processed the
transaction, and sometimes not. So I would like to know if there's a program
or something that will allow me to either log socket communication, or to
monitor the sockets, etc... Can anyone help me out with this?

What in the php.net Manual is the concept of default function called? I see

If you need the data to be secure, you could probably just encrypt it with
mcrypt, if you want to make sure it wasn't forged, you want to have A sign

SSL would be useless. It has no facilities for authentication, which is what
we need here. Basically, SSL encrypts communications between two computers-
it doesn't care which two and is therefore vulnerable to man-in-the-middle
attacks.

 have a DB on a Win2k box with user authentication information and some
 scripts in IIS that use that to handle user logins, right? When you toss
 them over to the PHP/Linux system do it via SSL, encode the
 username/password in some GET or POST data, and let the PHP scripts
 authenticate them against the same Win2k database, then give them a
 session variable with their user credientials.

 This is of course assuming that you can get the PHP on Linux and your DB
 on Wkn2k talking, which might currently be prevented by a networking
 issue. If you can't fix the network look into mechanisms for replicating
 the data from the Win2k machine to the Linux machine on a nightly/hourly
 basis.

Re: [PHP] Weird results from Left Shift

2001-09-19 Thread Sheridan Saint-Michel

I already tried that before posting the question.

?php
$num = 8;
$num = decbin($num);
echo Number is $numBR;
$num = $num  1;
echo Shifted Number is $num;
?

Gives me the output:
Number is 1000
Shifted Number is 2000

Subject: Re: [PHP] Weird results from Left Shift

  Okay, from the manual I have
  $a $b - Shift the bits of $a $b steps to the left

  When I run the code

  ?php
  $num = 0001000;
  echo Number is $numBR;
  $num = $num  1;
  echo Shifted Number is $num;
  ?

  I get the output

  Number is 0001000
  Shifted Number is 2000

  What am I missing?!?

 Use: $num = bindec(0001000);

Re: [PHP] How to set the time for session??

2001-09-19 Thread speedboy

   i want to expire the session if user sits 15 minutes idle without doing
 anything.

On each page view, you could write a variable to the session file, so the
last modified time is updated. Then run the session deletion script from:

http://database.sourceforge.net/scripts/session.sh

every minute. This is very reliable.

[PHP] Modularity--Optimizing Includes and Libs

2001-09-19 Thread Bora Paksoy

Hi;

I have a question regarding includes and writing
library modules in PHP.

In one of the replies to my previous e-mail,I was told
that PHP parses/compiles pages everytime a new request
comes in. So, does this mean we have to minimize the
amount of code per page (which also means to minimize
number of includes) to improve response time? I mean,
usually in many programming languages, it is a common
practice to gather shared functions in a library and
include/import them from individual scripts. But, in
case of PHP, given that this library will also be
parsed/compiled per every request, is this a bad
practice? What is the alternative to this? Replicate
functions that are used in scripts in every page?

Thanks,
Baho

Re: [PHP] Weird results from Left Shift

2001-09-19 Thread Rasmus Lerdorf

 ?php
 $num = 8;
 $num = decbin($num);
 echo Number is $numBR;
 $num = $num  1;
 echo Shifted Number is $num;
 ?

But you are using it wrong. decbin() returns a string with a binary
pattern in it. You can't shift a string. You shift numbers. If you
already know the decimal value of the number you want to shift you don't
have to do anything. I suggested bindec() because I thought you wanted to
provide a binary representation of the number for some reason.

Re: [PHP] hrm..loop trouble

2001-09-19 Thread Philip Olson

Modulus will come in handy here, here's an example use :

 table
  tr
?php

$result = mysql_query(SELECT foo FROM bar);

$i = 0;
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result,MYSQL_ASSOC)) {

  echo \ttd. $row['foo'] ./td\n;

  if (($i++ % 5) === 4) {
echo /tr\ntr\n;
  }
}

?
  /tr
 /table
