Time to uninstall. It seems like it can only run so long before
something happens. Gets tedious after a while.

Weather.com has changed their layout thus breaking the current version
of SDT, but thanks to the fine community here there is already an
(unofficial) update: :)

Wunderground is working for me even though weather.com stopped working.
In the plugins tab under SuperDateTime settings you have to enter a
weather wunderground station. Then you have to configure the Player
tab settings for SuperDateTime to use one of the format strings listed
under the wunderground.com column (third column of format strings).

I'm guessing you must leave the weather.com location/zip code blank,

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] SuperDateTime stopped working ?

I use SDT and have it set up for both. That way I get the forecast from
weather.com (identifier UKXX) and the local current conditions
from a very close wunderground station (identifier IDNSxx).

You then can mix the weather.com and wunderground format specifiers in
your player preferences to combine the info as you'd like.

For my Boom I have:

3-line:

  %Z
  PREC %x

Line 12:
  %y: %v
  %e %1

Note I always find I have to use %e for Celsius from Wunderground,
despite the SDT help saying that gets you Fahrenheit.

Two days later, and mine is updating...most of the time.

A quick look at my server error log indicates that timeout errors are
still occurring, but it appears to only be happening once every few
hours. No apparent pattern to the frequency, but occurrences are
infrequent enough now so as not to bother me.

I have no idea if the MusicIP export was causing the problem, but I
didn't need it as part of my regular scanning anyway, so I'll keep it
off and see if the problem reappears.

it's in a good state I might post a minor 7.3 update but it wont be all
 inclusive.

 -Greg
Well, I´d appreciate that very much. Theres no need for all the new
features, just if it keeps reading weather.com would make me happy,
too.
And - not that Im in any anti 7.4 movement, but I´m running SC on a
QNAP NAS, its an old ts109 with not much RAM and its working fine with
7.3.
I have heard lots of problems with the new SSOTS which is needed there
to install 7.4 or 7.5 and lots of other problems also (no hdd spindown
and worst: Audio-Playback on Controller tends to stutter! which it does
not with 7.3).
Thats why I dont wanna change until this problems are solved.

And now I tried out the trick with updating plugin.pm as others did
successfully:
Problems:
1. Superdatetime was not to be found in Squeezecenter/Plugins
instead I found it in Squeezecenter/Cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins

2. .par file not easily to decode.
used 7Zip, worked

3. plugin.pm: I didnt know with which charset it shoud be encoded
I left it as ANSI
(custom-strings.txt files in ANSI used to crash my SC!!!)
well: it worked.

4. Then I didnt know how to uninstall.
I did it via Config-Page, stopping, restarting, stopping and then
manually deleting the superdatetime directory in the above mentioned
dir.

5. then I didnt know where to install
Squeezecenter/Plugins ? or above mentioned Dir?
I tried the first, hoping it would move itself to above Dir, if
needed.
well, it worked, did not move to cache/...

6.felt tempereature didnt work (-17degrees)
found BoomX2 s posting, integrated that, too
hooray, worked again!

what do I want to say with that text?
it works, but its complicated for non-techies(like I am) to get it
running.

best regards!

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] SuperDateTime stopped working ?

2010-01-23 Thread smc2911

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it (I think) without any success.
It's been a while since I've edited a Plugin. Is is the case these days
that the Plugin code is in a .par file? I moved the .par file to a .zip,
unzipped it, edited the relevant spot, updated the zip file and renamed
it .par in the same place and restarted SBC. Does that sound like the
right approach?

I could do that but it gets a bit tricky with the way I have the code
designed right now for network retries and such.

I don't think it's anti-abuse, I think it's more of a capacity issue on
their end. Their new page clearly requires more resources on their end
and it often fails to load even on browsers first hit to the site.

Thanks Mark-

I've seen similar behavior on a handful of instances. I think what's
happening is weather.com is giving a half baked web response that
doesn't parse with tree builder and then when I try to walk the null
tree it craps out with a real exception which kills the plugin.

I need to play with tree builder/Perl to see if there's an elegant way
to check for that condition. I can add null value checks all over the
place, but given the number of parses it makes the code look very ugly.
It also doesnt help that it's not an easily reproducible condition to
program against.

For me, versions post 5.8.7 are not working with manual install on

Do you think I can move just the parsing code from the new Plugin.pm to

Greg,

I happened to be on the other night when weather.com started barfing.
When the site was unreliable, it seemed to return one of 3 ways when
forcing a refresh;

1 - Timed out
2 - Returned a 404 page not found
3 - Returned a completely blank page

Sorry that I didn't capture the page source when this was happening. I
believe the 1st is probably dealt with by squeezebox server's error
handling, but the latter 2 will likely return all the way to the plugin
and will have to be thrown out there.

It may not be fool proof, but can you begin your gotWeather, got10day,
gotAverages routines with a check for something that always appears on
the page and if it's not there assume it's a garbage page and throw it
out?

No, the * stays there for a very long time and does go from time to

Quite a few of us do not want to upgrade to 7.4.x because of its

It would be so useful to have one of our fave plugins working again!

I've interpreted the silence on fixing SDT 5.8.7 for SC 7.3.3 as a
no-can-do. Understood, GoCubs: you have done enough. The pleasure of
your plugin is in the past for us non-upgraders. I did happen upon this,
which might be of help to others in my predicament. Works a treat.

Hey Whitman-

I haven't been following the anti 7.4 movement, in summary what's the
issue with it?

Regarding 7.3, has anyone tried running it on 7.4 (you'll have to
install it manually instead of using the repo). Perhaps it'll work, if
not has anyone tried copy/pasting the 7.4 gotWeather Perl sub from
plugin.pm to 5.8.7? That should work.

I'm sorry to say, but supporting an additional build is not appealing.
I am not a software company with unlimited time and resources. To have
a full fledged build I'd also have to go backport all of the other fixes
that have occurred past 5.8.7 or I'm certain there'd be emails and forum
posts to that regard.

I do not have a 7.3 installation to test things with, if someone is
willing to test a build out for me we can try that route. Basically
I'll do the copy/pasting suggested above and you'll need to manually
install the copy and let me know how it goes. If it looks good I can
package it up.

Thanks for posting this.

If you could log into weather.com when it has any parsing errors and

That's weird that you got a Can't find the requested page error...
it pulls up find for me in a browser. Like you suggested, it seems like
they're having a number of stability issues on their end with the new

Hey Steve-

Does the '*' in the corner eventually become a '?'? Do any requests
make it through without timing out? If you push the '+' remote button
does it refresh okay?

I'm surprised by the number of connectivity-related issues people are
posting about. The only thing that has changed in SDT is parsing logic,
not networking. Things are failing before the plugin even has a chance
to parse. It seems to me like weather.com's new site isn't very stable
which is throwing off the plugin.

I haven't been seeing these issues on my side, but it does seem like
people overseas are more impacted.

I took the advice of another poster and implemented your quick,
two-line feels-like fix that he said fixed the infinite * problem.
It did indeed fix that for me; then the behavior turned to the * then
? sequence (that you asked of another poster) when I ran into the
weather.com error logs I posted.

About two hours after I posted those logs, the weather.com site for
92067 started working fine. And, the update appeared correctly in the
SB display.

So, it seems like the feels-like fix, for whatever reason (maybe
coincidence) fixes the infinite star problem well enough to allow SDT to
pick up good feeds when they're available from weather.com. Let's hope
their feed settles down so we don't have to keep troubleshooting
weather.com in addition to SDT!

Again, thanks for your work on this.

Unless there's a different Perl error listed in the logs when parsing
the feels-like text that hasn't been posted it's likely a coincidence.

Hi Greg.

I took the file you posted with the parsing fix you made a few days ago
and put it into the 5.8.7 PAR file and it is working fine on 7.3.3.

I haven't been following the anti 7.4 movement, in summary what's the
 issue with it?

For what it's worth, I recently upgraded to 7.4.1 (release version) from a
7.3 build, this is on Windows XP. No problems at all, in fact it really
seems better in a number of ways. I recommend it to anyone still on 7.3.
(Having said that, I completely wiped out my 7.3 installation including
the DB and all plugins and started from scratch, saving only my prefs and
first making sure I had a Trackstat backup I could restore from after the
DB was rebuilt.)

Greg can't be expected to support multiple builds, it's enough that he's
developing SDT just out of love for the community.

Hey Bruce-

Thanks for helping out and posting your log output.

From the contents of your log it looks like you're having network
issues (DNS name resolution and timeout errors). Since the issues are
being reports by things besides SDT I don't think the plugin is the
problem.

Hmm

Nothing changed on my end.

I have a 15mb connection. Everything else I use network wise is working
fine.

But...I will keep watch.

I did switch to Google DNS service. Just for fun I will switch back to
Time Warner and see if there is a difference.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] SuperDateTime stopped working ?

2010-01-20 Thread peterw

Bruce, how often are you updating data? I had been updating every 5
minutes (for years!) when I saw the intermittent failures. This morning
I added my latest safeguard and increased the interval to 7 minutes. In
over 110 fetches, I've only seen 1 obvious error, and it was the second
fetch after I decreased the frequency. Probably just coincidence --
weather.com fixing a bug on their end. But I do wonder if maybe I was
seeing some sly anti-abuse measures: give random bad data to folks who
poll too often. :-)

Hey Peter,

I set mine to poll every 15 minutes.

It has worked correctly since I changed the DNS settings from Google
back to Time Warner.

I have no idea if cause/effect is the DNS change but I monitor it to
see.

I do know this our family is so used to SDT that we can't go out side
without checking the Squeezebox first. :) It is amazing how much this
one plugin became a part of how we live.

They *do* offer an XML feed, as do the other weather type sites
(weather channel, yahoo weather, etc).

http://wiki.wunderground.com/index.php/API_-_XML#ForecastXML

for example:

http://api.wunderground.com/auto/wui/geo/ForecastXML/index.xml?query=03057

The forecast info appears to be exactly the same text on their web
site.

I honestly can't make heads or tails out of their API restrictions
(they just don't make any sense to me given the data they're supplying
is XML). And I don't program in Perl, so I have no idea how hard this
would be to parse.

But it's GOT to be easier than screen-scraping, no?? I HAD a free
program that was widely used within a specialized community that did
screen scraping, and it was a constant hassle to keep updated. The
code's not even any fun to write. I finally gave up and opted for an
XML-based method.

FWIW, I never lost faith, Greg. :)
I understand the perils of page scraping and it's really too bad
weather.com doesn't offer an API of some sort.
Although I understand why they don't - advertising dollars - it's still
too bad.

Anyway, take your time. People can always use their Squeezebox to tune
to a local radio station and get their weather the old fashioned way.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] SuperDateTime stopped working ?

2010-01-14 Thread GoCubs

As expected weather.com phased a new web page layout.

I'm in the process of correcting the parsing. It's a tedious
process... I'll try to have an updated version posted as soon as
possible, but this plugin is more of a hobby to me and my normal job and
responsibilities come first. I hope you understand.

For those anxious to get some data appearing, I've attached my current
plugin.pm file. It contains *some* updated parsing. No support is
provided, you need to be more of an 'expert' user to know what to do
with it...

Thanks
-Greg

Stopped working for me too. Only weather icon and time showing. Running
SC 7.2.1 and SDT 5.8.7. I know I need to upgrade SC to 7.4 and as well
update SDT but I'm running some specialized code for displaying
track/album art info on my TV that I know SC 7.4 will break. I just
haven't had time to update my code. Hopefully, you will have a fix soon.

We're having some unusually cold (for us) weather in Florida lately.
When the Squeezeboxes in the house stopped showing the current

So I PayPal'd you a modest donation.

Looking forward to an update when you get a chance.

It's a biggie for me, too. SDT is on my short list of must-have
plugins, and it's not fun making do without it.

You probably don't want to see my copy of SDT. :-) I've hacked mine to
include support for a FuzzyTime feature that's not mentioned on my
FuzzyTime web page -- making the text move slowly from side-to-side (to
distribute the pixel usage, in hopes that this, like AutoDim, might help
keep the VFDs in better shape). In my case, every time SDT refreshed the
weather forecast, it would move the time, weather info, and weather
conditions icon a bit to one side or the other. It works great in Large
font mode, but is messed up in Medium and Small. Since I never fixed
Medium and Small, I never bothered submitting changes to Greg Brown
(SDT's author). Anyhow, this means I might be running a relatively old
version of SDT.

I hope that Greg also still uses SDT, and that he'll jump in and fix
the HTML-parsing routine himself soon (though I know he is often very
busy with his day job). Otherwise I may have to take a stab at it, as it
really does bug me to see a plain old clock on my Squeezeboxes. I can't
imagine republishing SDT, though. Uploading a new Plugin.pm or zip file
to the forums, probably. Email it to Greg, definitely.

If anybody here with free time knows Perl, I'd encourage you to take a
look. There's a callback function in Plugin.pm (GotWeather, I think)
that parses the response from weather.com -- looks like lots of regexp
code, just what you'd expect. It should be pretty easy to rip GotWeather
out to a standalone script for troubleshooting, I just don't know how
soon I'd be able to do that.

Hi everyone-

I'm sorry you're having issues. I'm currently running 5.8.11 (latest
version posted a few weeks ago) and haven't had any issues when using
zip code 60614 (Chicago).

My guess is they've changed something when displaying some other
countries.

To help me investigate can you please post the weather code you're
using and make sure you're also using the latest version of the plugin.

If you're having issues please keep in mind that until I have a parsing
fix you can also utilize a wunderground weather station for the current
conditions. That uses a different website and parsing.

Also, please don't be so quick to loose faith in the plugin or the
support I've offered for it for many years now.

Thanks

Hi Greg,
I'm running SDT 5.8.11 with SBS 7.4.1 on Windows Home Server.

My weather.com code is 76248 and I try to display the following:

(Default Mode)
Icon On, Off
Line 1 and 2 macros: %z, %t

All I see is a cloud and the degrees symbols where the two temperatures
should be placed.

I tried placing your Chicago code in my setup, and get the same

Any other additional information you'd like?

I would try restarting your server. That's what will give you the
cloud symbol and all the blank weather data. Prior to doing that, it
appears to be working OK, albeit with data that is off by 8 or 12
hours.

It seems as if weather.com has definitely changed for US zip codes as
Peterw confirmed; I'd give a reset a try and see if you don't get the
same behavior we're all seeing.

And, last but not least, we do thank you for your support of SDT; I
know you've put a lot of work into it and personally taken some of my
