using instead of downloading a fresh copy Windows 7 was just making a
copy of the previous download. Anyway downloaded slimnas v1.4.99f on
another PC and installed. Now finding sox and appears to be streaming -

is restored to original file. Had a look at slimnas.tgz - Sox not
included.

Support for sox on FreeNas! I thought I'd try that, so i followed your
instruction and playing 24/96 flac files didn't work - ahhh. Did a bit
of searching the forums I came across a temp fix for this. Commenting
out the "flc flc transcode" lines in the convert.conf file and just like
magic the 24/96 flac files play - Hurahhh. Brilliant. Normal flac files
work - great. Apple Lossless files don't - ahhh.

Any ideas why? I know this is just a pre build and if there is a quick
fix fair enough, if not I'll just go back to FreeNas 0.69.

Henkv - I've got an early build for FreeNAS 0.7. If you're adventurous,
then here's what you can do:

- basically follow instructions on http://www.herger.net/SlimNAS/
- download the beta from http://www.herger.net/slim/slimnas-1.4.99.tgz
- rename this file to slimnas.tgz
- download the latest 7.4 build from
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.4

Some points to consider:

- this is built for Squeezebox Server 7.4. It might run with 7.3, but I
can't guarantee
- this build will only run on FreeNAS 0.7x/32 bit

What it adds (besides SBS 7.4/FreeNAS 0.7 support)
- faad
- sox
- alac

Good luck!

Yes, I have planned this. But as you now might know we're very busy
getting two new products out. I just haven't found the time to do this yet

Well, my actual question was how can I tell what version's actually
installed in FreeNAS*, but that's a fair enough point.

* Fwiw, I still think it would be useful to have a readme (or similar)
in the slimnas.tgz archive saying what version it is.

In any event, I am very grateful for your help, and want to thank you
for developing SlimNAS.

Cheers

Not sure how to tell the build of SlimNAS - all I have is a file called
slimnas.tgz, and none of the contents obviously specifies a
version/build.

But it's whatever the latest build was as of 9 January this year, when

unclear what to do, even after going to readynas.com.

I've found out i can adderss the netgear directly from the transporter

update the firmware on the transporter. When I do that it reads the
old version of squeezcenter from the NAS. Everything works great until
i try to play a song, which I've ripped as WMA lossless, i get an error
message telling me i need a more recent version of windows or
something

I'd realyl appreciate advice on how to directly access the netgear for
music.

Oops, didn't notice this one. Simple typo to fix: open
usr/www/services_slimserver.php in the SlimNAS share and replace "" with
"". Then save the settings on the page (or reboot the machine) navigate
around and you should see it fixed next time you open the page. Thanks for the
heads-up. The fix will be in the next release.

I'll have SlimNAS 1.2 up later today. Thanks for all the pointers. The above
change is required due to some last minute change in FreeNAS 0.69.

I've edited functions.inc and services_slimserver_maintenance.php
(/usr/local/www/ext/slimserver) to replace get_filesize with
snget_filesize which then gets round that. However if I manually try
to run the initialisation script I get the errors below (which don't
mean anything to me) but after disabling and re-enabling the
SqueezeCenter service under 'Extensions' in the FreeNAS GUI it then
works.

Michael, there's also a minor error on the Extensions|SqueezeCenter web
page when rendered with Firefox 3 where the list of files with radio
buttons is one long string rather than the column is used to be. It
still looks fine in IE.

What version did you upgrade from to? There seems to be a name conflict in a
sub name I'm using. Maybe they introduced a sub with the same name somewhere in

Did you try to re-install SlimNAS? Maybe the FreeNAS update wiped the startup
command SlimNAS set in its configuration. At some point in FreeNAS development
there was a change in that particular area.

It's so ugly and long I can't tell you, because it includes your file paths and
everything... but as you've been asking, here's the code:

"HOME={$config['slimserver']['rootfolder']} PAR_GLOBAL_CLEAN=1
TEMP={$config['slimserver']['rootfolder']}/var/squeezecenter/Cache" .
" /usr/local/bin/perl
{$config['slimserver']['rootfolder']}/squeezecenter/slimserver.pl" .
" --user=www --charset=utf8
--prefsdir={$config['slimserver']['rootfolder']}/etc/squeezecenter" .
"
--logfile={$config['slimserver']['rootfolder']}/var/squeezecenter/Logs/server.log"
 .
" --logdir={$config['slimserver']['rootfolder']}/var/squeezecenter/Logs" .
" --cachedir={$config['slimserver']['rootfolder']}/var/squeezecenter/Cache" .
" --daemon
--pidfile={$config['slimserver']['rootfolder']}/var/squeezecenter.pid"

...where {$config['slimserver']['rootfolder']} is the path to your SlimNAS
installation. I hope to soon have a simplified version where SC would find most
of those paths itself.

> 2. if there is a log describing what went wrong, where is it located?

server.log, should be in var/squeezecenter/Logs (as you can see from the above

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 1.1 for SqueezeCenter 7.1+

2009-01-12 Thread ik632

Some observations about this setup:

1. My current install is an old Celeron 600 with 512mb of ram.
2. The "virtual install" has 1gb ram and 1.9ghz modern AMD processor
(I'm running a 32 bit os and 32 bit FreeNAS install).
3. The setup is incredibly fast across the network (maybe double the
speed of my current setup).
4. I suspect that this is due to a very small database since I only
copied over 25 or so songs before scanning.
5. The new FreeNAS is very nice, there are some new services which may
make it very usable.
6. SlimNAS 1.1.3 was very easy to install wiht 7.3.1. I know I've done
it a few times now, but it was easier than in the past.

Great work Michael!

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 1.1 for SqueezeCenter 7.1+

2009-01-12 Thread ik632

I just did a test build last night on vmware (there are blank machines
you can download from the internet as well as blank virtual drives).

Here's what I did:

SlimNAS 1.1.3
FreeNAS 0.69RC2 (i386)
SqueezeCenter 7.3.1

Installed FreeNAS on virtual machine. I created a 2gb "OS" drive and
installed FreeNAS to that using the "full" install because I planned on
adding SlimNAS to it and I've had the best luck with running off a hard
disk. The 2gb drive was broken into 1gb for OS install and 1gb for
remainder data (I'll get into this more later). I setup two virtual IDE
drives 20gb each and made a raid 1 drive out of them. I created 4 512mb
SCSI drives and created a 1.5gb Raid5 array (wanted to test this while
I was at it). Finally mounted the drives as follows:

1gb remainder - mounted as "/mnt/osd" short for os drive (SlimNAS is
installed here)
20gb raid1 array - mounted as "/mnt/raid1" (I know, I'm not original).
1.5gb raid5 array - you guessed it, mounted as "/mnt/raid5"

Next I created the appropriate shares so I could copy stuff to the
machine. I created a media folder on the 20gb share then a SlimNAS
folder on the 1gb osd share. I ran the install per the instructions.

1. Run a command from the FreeNAS web gui to run "/bin/sh
/mnt/osd/slimnas/slimnas-install.sh"
a. you have to wait a little while here for things to finish. I
went and had a sandwich.
2. When you refresh the web gui there will be a new "extensions" tab
across the top (for those of you that haven't seen it yet 0.69rc2 has a
new web gui).
3. Go to extensions and squeezecenter
4. This is the important part here that you have to pay attention to
that nobody seams to do so.
5. Click on SqueezeCenter 7.3.1 in the list for install and pick Save
a. This will install squeezecenter. This took about 5 minutes for
things to settle down after it was done.
b. You can go have another sandwich at this time because you don't
want to rush it.
6. Once you have given it plenty of time to install, you will want to
start the service.
7. Click on "enable" and keep existing install.
8. This will take another 5 minutes to run and finish starting up.
9. You should wait here, just be patient.
10. Go to the ip address of your server:9000 and you'll have the nice
squeezecenter startup page greeting you.
11. Log into your squeeze account if you want and then scan for music.

What can I check? Where should SC be started from on boot-up?

This is independant of SlimNAS. The answer is: as long as the file paths
stay the same (same mount point etc.) you can simply copy the .prefs etc.
files from the slimnas folder.

Well, if you're running the 64-bit build, then there's no next. Unless you want
to start compiling Perl and all the other tools needed for SlimNAS yourself. If
you do so, please let me know: there would be quite a few happy users out there

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 1.1 for SqueezeCenter 7.1+

2008-12-27 Thread jbraveman

I realize that is says clearly here:
http://www.herger.net/slim/detail.php?nr=1026 that slimnas doesn't run
on the AMD64 builds of freenas. However, I could use some advice about
what to do next.

I built this before I knew about these issues:

Foxconn A7GM-S AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI Micro ATX AMD
OCZ StealthXStream OCZ500SXS 500W ATX12V / EPS12V
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6GHz Socket AM2 65W
OCZ SLI-Ready 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual
Channel
3 x 1TB SATA drives
Freenas is running in an embedded fashion off a 4gb usb thumb drive.

I upgraded to:
0.69RC2 Kralizec (revision 4083)
built on Sun Nov 30 10:46:11 UTC 2008
OS Version FreeBSD 6.4-RELEASE (revision 199506)
Platformamd64-embedded on AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor
5000+ running at 2600 MHz

I installed:
slimnas-1.1.2.tgz
and tried squeezecenter-7.3.1-24389-noCPAN.tgz and
squeezecenter-noCPAN.tgz from here:
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/current/

I was able to install the Squeezecenter extension in Freenas, but the
service fails to start with any version of squeeze center that I try.
I get this message:

Status (SlimNAS Version v1.1.2)
Failed SqueezeCenter is not available. Please note that it might take
a minute or more for the service to be available after a restart.
Please refresh this page to check the status again.

(multiple refreshes don't help).

1) Where do I locate the log file to see what's going on with this?
2) I have tried installing the i386 version of freenas on my machine,
but get an error message before it starts.
3) I can't use the older versions of freenas because my NIC is not
recognized.
4) should I abandon this scheme and install squeeze center on another
computer linked to the freenas drives?

Thanks.

That's the important part. Perl (and all the other binaries included) needs to
be re-compiled for FreeNAS 0.7.

It's just Squeezecenter doesn't actually seem to start up.

Could you tell me the command line to get SC running so that I can see

No. Or rather: no idea. But I doubt it, as FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD 7,
whereas the older 0.6x series is based on FreeBSD 6.x

I'm sorry for the confusion. I'll get the message back up there.

Michael,
I noted on your website that the warning for slimnas not running on the
0.7 release of FreeNAS had been removed.
Does this mean that slimnas 1.1.2 should run on 0.7?

If so I'm having problems getting my squeezecenter to start. the
slimnas extension does appear to be running as i can enable and disable
squeezecenter from the webui but SC doesn't actually run.

Any ideas about what I could try to get it running?
I have tried reinstalling slimnas and squeezecenter following my

After the installation I've noticed that samba not works with iMac OSX

After some time I've got CC to deal with samba for my iMac,
it's not really explained on the internet.

This works fine now so I can compare CC to FN before my finall

At least part of what was wrong was the user I was logged in as didn't
have the right privileges, so I logged in as root and was able to
create the correct structure in the right place - ie

/usr/local/www/ext/slimserver

and then, from my slimnas folder, did

cp -R -f usr/www/*.inc /usr/local/www/ext/slimserver
cp -R -f usr/www/*.php /usr/local/www

which both worked fine.

> (I assume it's then written to ramdisk or something)

The config settings are all written to floppy, so persist between
boots.

However, having now specified

/mnt/data/slimnas

(ie, the directory that contains the squeezecenter and usr
directories)

as the "installation directory", I am now getting the following error
message in the "Install" section of the SqueezeCenter page on the
FreeNAS GUI:

"There's no SqueezeCenter installation file available. Please download
the appropriate squeezecenter-noCPAN.tgz file from
http://www.slimdevices.com/ and store it in your SlimNAS installation
folder using your preferred method (Windows share, FTP, etc.)."

I have also tried re-downloading the squeezecenter-noCPAN.tgz file to
my slimnas directory, but get the same problem.

I fear that's a limitation of the live CD: you can't write to /usr/local, as
it's on a read-only CD. I assume SlimNAS won't work on a live CD installation.

Fell at the first hurdle, I'm afraid. In my 'slimnas' directory (the

mkdir -p /usr/local/www/ext/slimserver

creating each new folder in turn and cd'ing into the new folder to
create the next one down.

Then I ran

cp -R -f usr/www/*.inc $FREENASWEB/ext/slimserver

but got

FREENASWEB: Undefined variable.

Hi Michael

No folder gets created.

I unpacked squeezecenter-noCPAN.tgz manually - to a directory just
called squeezecenter - but when I executed slimnas-install.sh I got
the same error.

I have also just tried manually unpacking slimnas-1.1.2.tgz - it
unpacks to usr - so I then had a 'slimnas' directory containing two
folders:

squeezecenter
usr

and the slimnas-install.sh script.

But executing slimnas-install.sh just results in the same - ie,

$ /bin/sh /mnt/data/slimnas/slimnas-install.sh

install to/run from the Live-CD version. (If it is specified
somewhere, and I've missed it, my apologies!)

Very interresting, but can you give me more info on this.
I wish I could install Freenas 0.69 (nov 8) with SC.
Then I could use my Marvel LAN Chipset onboard so I'll could use
my Sata-controller in the ONLY PCI-slot, this is now occupied
with my Realtek RTL8169SC 1Gb LAN!

So, is 0.686.4 the latest, "not newest" one that works and is tested?

Depends on your laptop, NAS and network. But it's a bit clueless if you
could be running it on the same machine.

Would there be a significant performance hit if I run slimserver on my
lappy?

It might work. The issues I've seen were mostly in FreeNAS web interface.

What "latest" version are you running?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] SlimNAS 1.1 for SqueezeCenter 7.1+

2008-11-18 Thread jbraveman

This is my first endeavor with NAS or squeezebox so forgive me if my
questions are basic.

I just built a freenas with new equipment - foxconn board and AMD
processor. I had to use the newest release of freenas because the older
ones did not recogonize my built-in NIC. The freenas is running nicely
now. My intention was to use slimnas to serve music (in flac format)
to the squeezebox (which I haven't yet purchased). I discovered that
the last version of slimnas may not be compatible with the most recent
freenas build.

Should I:
1) try to install slimnas anyway and see if it works
2) install squeezecenter on my laptop (Lenovo x61s) and point it to my
freenas drives
3) do something else entirely

Thanks

Getting ready to rebuild and wanted to be sure of the latest "stable"
release. I'm going with the following:

FreeNAS 0.686.4
SlimNAS 1.1.2
SqueezeCenter 7.2.1

Any issues out there?

Thanks,
Nick

If you mean using Windows to browse your music which is stored on the NAS?
Sure! That's what it was developed for in the very first place. (well, maybe
not music, but any files on your NAS)

2008-09-10 Thread mudlark

Michael,

please forgive me for being dim, but does slimnas installed on an older
machine allow browsing of the music storage folders on the slimnas
machine by windows machines on the same network? Specifically WMP.

I want to replace my linkstation by a better machine capable of also
acting as a good squeezeserver.

Cheers,

Michael
