Re: [Quantum Owners] Saloon Ventilation
RE heated windscreens: my ‘local’ screen supplier and motorsport / car fan had ordered 5 screens tinted with band. However, we got clear screens ! So we’re trying to get to the bottom of this and get the screens we wanted. Must say, the price wasn’t too bad, if only the product was exactly what was ordered... He supplies more oldtimer screens for Ford, Vauxhall Opel, etc. You’ll find him on FB too. Look for ‘verwarmde voorruit’. [Quantum Owners] Re: Zetec Blacktop into Saloon -anyone got info/advice?
When converting my 2+2 from cv to silvertop, I used a PSA cranckpulley to make the waterpomp Vbelt driven. A friend of mine turned the centre bagger on a lathe to fit perfectly on the waterpomp boss with the four holes. Cranckpulley was cvh, as Jim shows, but turned off 2mm to get in line as close to the engine as possible. Made a new alternator bracket to get that pully in line. Bracket consists of two pieces of angled girder with some holes. Rolf -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Quantum Owners Group" group. Great you're interested in these cars. They're really great, cheap, fun to drive and fun to learn from. Did anyone warn you of the "Quantum addiction"? First I got a saloon, then a 2+2, then another 2-2 .and another project 2-2. The problem is, I never could part with the previous! Once you have a car that is complete, your challenges seem to be in maintaining it. That is easier than building one, now the donor car is becoming obsolete. Re: [Quantum Owners] 2+2 boot lid hinge covers
Excellent! It is an easy job for a 3D printer and I have asked a local to 3D scan them. The detail can be very good, so you can even see the Ford manufacturing markings in reproduction. There must be around 10miles of copperwiring gone into that, but not all for the conversion I haste to say. And is does make sense: an electric convertible and enjoy the birds singing. Thanks for having us, your hospitality and coffee. Hope you lot liked the wine and dropjes. The stroopwafels disappeared in no time! Re: Fw: [Quantum Owners] Fatter tyres??
Yes, the 2+2 will be at Stoneleigh. At your disposal to measure everything you want! But only if the (14") wheels are ready from the paintshop and some tyres fitted! Gonna be last minute...fingers crossed! Tonight I measured just under 20mm drivers side between wheelrim and trailingarm and about 15mm on the passengers side. Under load, this will be even more centered. This is measured with 6,5 J rims of 15" ET 38 fitted with 195-45-15 and 5mm spacers, so low profile and therefore not really exceeding the rim. Spacers not really needed, but fills the arches better. (the Focus got new Dunlops last year (195-60-15), and indeed these were more rim-protecting than the ones on before.) The space between the shock and tyre is, curiously enough, the same as mentioned above. Remember it is only now the axle is put central; these measurements were way off in the past! It seems more quantums need this checked. The saloon is not at my home, so sorry not to have the opportunaty to take measurements. As it runs wider wheels, presumably the axle is well positioned. On the front it has more room to turn than on the 2+2, these wider wheels rubbing the inner wing on full lock and also the scuttle full lock otherway around. No problem on the saloon. Will exchange numbers at Stoneleigh so you can have a look at the pics. (Or pass your mobilenr to Michael Huges, he has my details and is near you.) Any use all these details? Re: Fw: [Quantum Owners] Fatter tyres??
Hi, have the same problem on 2+2. Found indeed the axle was not centered under normal load. When jacking the car to find out why the anti rolbar moved off-side, it occured to me that the axle was right in the middle. Thats why under load it moves approximately 10mm, thus causing the tyre to grinding the shock dustcover. I moved the hole in the panhardrodbracket 10 mm, now under normal conditions, the axle is centered. Now see if the antirolbar also stays centered. Normally The 2+2 runs on 185-60-14 , now temporary on 195-45-15. The 14" run much smoother and give far better clearance. However, on the saloon there is room for 195-50-15. That also runs quite comfortable. So there seems to be more space on a saloon than on a 2+2. [Quantum Owners] Re: Fw: Complete Kit Car news – Stoneleigh seminars are back
Hi all, Since last year my Quantum won a prize in best overseas Quantum, it will be joining you this year in the catagory 'best last minutes overseas Quantum". It sits in the garage with no wheels, due to the wheels being refurbished. The process has been delayed somewhat, but hopefully everthing will be ready by then. We will travel all the way in company of a Midas convertible and a coupe. The idea is to may be catch up on the Saturday, go to Blyton's mini actionday on Sunday, travel back to Stoneleigh, probably missing the bbq (may be there's a bit left?) , but in time for the pubquiz! Is it still on? Or is there more serious talking in the evening? It will be a jam packed weekend, now there's only one whole day at the show. Re: [Quantum Owners] Bodywork film
That seems to be a good idea. Last week I took the 2+2 to an advertising firm who wrappes cars as well, and they also pointed out the maximum sheet witdh is (close to) 150cm. That means joint lines on front, below the bumperline above indicators and at the rear probably too, because, starting from the back, the film wrapped over curves will end up at an angle moving towards the front of the car. They quoted around 1000UKP. A downside was there was no film in "rail-blue" , as Quantum specified a blue-green gelcoat. The colour is also known as 'petrol blue' available in paint, but not yet in film. If we as a club could concentrate the work at one firm, the quality will be better, due to having more experience on this specific car and get a discount at the same time. Seems sensible. Who can close the deal?? Can they do a car at Stoneleigh? Then I'll make sure I get my car there, because it is due to be a weddingcar a month later for good friends! What injectors are fitted ? Brown , two sets came with the engine engine code CA1W 18 O.K. What air flow sensor is fitted ? None, this set up is from early 90's with external EDIS see Haynes 1737; 12*31; diagram 6 Typical ZETEC (16V) Fuel Injection pre '95 models, I don't have the correct MAF sensor (do have 1.6), but it should also run without, shouldn't it? What cams are fitted ? Standaard, was MSA sealed engine for G20 class series in 2007. Whats the engine wiring loom ? The CVH injection setup is quite different to the Zetec so i assume you changed more than just swapping the ecu. Basicly it's a CVH XR2i loom from 1992 fiesta , engine end adapted to zetec sockets. But in addition to the air flow sensor, this wasn't foreseen then, and my friend's escort does run without one. The engine should stall if the connector is pulled off the idle valve, so you may have an air leak somewhere. I've had it before with the seals around the injectors. The Manual says no stalling: set base rpm to 700 and when plugging in the idle valve the rpm should rise some what Check the Rubber T or elbow that connects the crankcase breather pipe from the front of the engine into the gearbox end of the inlet manifold. These often perish and leak. renewed that when installing new engine. The injector seals are hard to find, but I managed to order a comlete set the other day at a Ford dealership further up the country. Wait and see. I did try toseal them off using assemby grease, but noticed no difference back then. Any comments? Re: [Quantum Owners] Poor idle zetec rs 1800 on 2+2
Thanks Jim for your extended investigation. My plans are to wait for the seals to arrive and replace them. In the meantime I will check the loom and get under the dash again to investigate the loom changes. You're right, it will be a confused ecu when one or more are mixed up. The diagram is no 7 indeed, the page no was correct in 12*31. In the base idle subject: see Haynes manual 1595 Fiësta '89-95 this base idle rpm is descibed on page 1*15 for 1.6EFI engines, funnily enough, there's no such description on the zetec 16V engines. I assumed they needed the same treatment. In chapter 4D*8 the sequential fuelinjection is mentioned, but no learning. Does anyone have a clue what I'd be looking for regarding the following problem? On idle, the engine rpm will vary between 500-2500 rpm. It starts as a small bandwith, say1000-1100 rpm, but when the engine gets warmer, the bandwith increases to the above mentioned. Then it's a pig to drive! Giving it a little throttle, dampens the variation. But when cruising under 2500 rpm, the engine will start rocking like a rocking horse! Increasing rpm giving it more throttle or pressing the clutch gets it out of oscillation again. Pulling the plug of the bypassvalve makes it more drivable, but rpm is very low when cold. Runs very smooth and reacts very responsive yet docile on the throttle.( above 2500 rpm). Some history: ran the engine on a XR2i (8v) ecu for a few years, ran reasonably ok, bit rich. Now i acquired an original RS1800 ecu , ran the learnsequence as per Haynes manual, like base rpm @700rpm, then -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Quantum Owners Group group. Re: [Quantum Owners] Stoneleigh 2014
The four of us would like to say a big thank you as well, for your hospitality and for turning on the BBQ again, Sunday evening! We enjoyed the quiz, too. We will watch more itv and bbc to end up higher in the 'advertisement' -round! It was fun and the time just flew by. Also nice to put some new names to faces, but probably hard to remember 'till next year. Well, not your face, Steve! Also quite interesting many Q owners did have mini's ( we came up with our Pimlico) and many have more kitcars than just the Q. So, many thanks again, and if you like travelling abroad, I'd like to recommend a 'Best of British' show on August 31st at Boxtel, in the south of the Netherlands. There is interest from Midas and MiniMarcos owners as well, so we might make it a complete weekend. It is just 300 km from Calais/Dunkirk , and I can sort you out a campingspace with no problem. Let me know how many of you will come and I'll try to arrange some kind of high tea. Re: [Quantum Owners] Front chassis for a 2+2
On the QOC website used to be three drawings how to adapt the frame, in the FAQ section, which I used. However, they seem to be temporarily not available. Rather than cutting and welding the lower subframe tube, I used an cvh crankpulley and have enough clearance. Therefore it' s reconverted to single v-belt with a Peugeot crankpulley on the waterpump. Re: [Quantum Owners] 2+2 Light flap relay
Basically, the common contact 30 from the lidmotor switches between +battery 87a and - battery 87, thus reversing the motor. When you pull out the relais from its housing with a small screwdriver, make sure the coil is charged when lights are on, seeing the juk being pulled to the coil, thus moving the contact from one to another. If not try to put your finger on it, pressing the juk to the coil. The contacts may be sticked to eachother. When releasing them, take off the voltage, just in case you slip and make a short! The contacts must be clean. Good luck! Rolf -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Quantum Owners Group group. [Quantum Owners] Re: Detling on Saturday anyone?
Why didn't you give a shout?! :-) Which one is yours? There were quite a few 2+2 on the fiels, at least three of them at the Kent KitCarClub. Unfortunately, we were a bit late and I was knackerd, being folded up in the back of an AMC for several hours. Would have liked to spend some more Q-quality time, but alas, may be another time. At least I got the shopping done also thanks to Derek, for bringing new bootstruts for the 2+2. Oh, I bumped into some old Dutch friends, of which I didnt know the were coming after inviting them. They even brought their sons along in order to let them get to know the Kit Car phenomenon. A pity the was no QOC stand, as usual. We have to support thes shows to let them get bigger and better. [Quantum Owners] Re: 2 + 2 hard top
Hi Justin, Put up the hardtop last weekend to get ready for winter, but struggling to match it evenly and fix it without irritating movement. It does look rather well, tough, retaining the cabrio look. Also struggling whith wheel and tyre sizes, as my OZ 7J 15 35 looks are certainly ok, but stering and tracking seems to be less than when fitting the original Quantum 6J 14 35 TWS alloys with 185-60-14 tyres. Now found some 61/2 J 50-15 alloys, which tend to keep in track and looks as well, fitted with 5 mil spacers. These have the same centreline measurements as the 14TSW when you calculate the ET and rim depts. They need a refurbishment though. Will keep the TSW for winter... See you! [Quantum Owners] TOW bar registration help needed
Hi all, Can everybody have a look at their V5 and see if there's any info filled in by the DVLA regarding the towingweight of a Quantum (both saloon and 2+2)? I'm having difficulties having my towbar registerd , although I presented the factory folder of 1993 to our RDW (DVLA), but that's not quite enough. They just need some kind of official evidence that there was a car fitted with a towbar, preferably by Quantum or DVLA. At the mo I may tow 400kg unbraked, 0 (yes: zero)kg braked. Doesn''t make much sense, does it? But it's the law and we need to bend it. Has anyone ever bought a towbar from QSC in the past with a letter, confiming the delivery and/or fitting instructions? Anything? Please help and have a look, much appreciated, Many thanks Rolf -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Quantum Owners Group group. Agree with you. Just some loose thoughts: Had the same experience, tried to sell my saloon for a reasonable price, but no decent offer, but I kept it for time being. Now my 2+2 is on the road, I might sell it for whatever comes up, or leave it in the garage. For now, the cost of having two cars on the road are not sky high, but lack of space is a downside. At the same time, due to having two Quantums on the drrive, people stare and hurt necks, trying to see the cars when they drive by and recently a guy came up to me to talk about the car at 7.30 am! So we defenately need people's interest i the cars what helps and take the cars out as much as we can. (says daily driver) What can we do to increase publicity? The truth is that a Mk2 without MoT is going to have to be pretty special to make more than £300 - 400, and a 2+2 £600 - 700. With MoT and tax, you could say the same cars would be £700 - 800 and £1000 -1500. I've bought three and sold one in the last year. (Don't ask..!) The above are governed, largely, by the alternatives on the wider market. Mx5s, MGFs, MR2s, XR2s, etc. etc. and the number of people with a non-runner kit car in the garage that they have lost interest in. Often that they bought second hand and didn't build. Now, the problem for most of us is that, having spent hours and money on our cars, their open market value is such that we won't get it back if we sell them. Which is why most of the best cars aren't for sale. I guess that's a fact of life. But it leaves the problem that, if your car gets written off, the only way to replace it is to buy a less special one and do lots of work to it to get it to the same standard. Which is why we need agreed value insurance. to cover the work involved. And particularly if it's someone else's fault - when you would be really annoyed to be offered the sort of money above for your immaculate 2+2 turbo 4wd nitrous injection with electric hood, kangaroo leather interior and diamond jewelled instruments, etc. (Don't tell me someone has one..!) The other problem is that, having built the ultimate car, it's not possible to sell it on to finance the next project. Or persuade other stakeholders in the household that you aren't just throwing good money after bad every month. So, ultimately, we all have an interest in improving the profile of these cars in the wider world. When rusty heaps of MGBs with agricultural engines and suspension are £2K+ and Mk1 Escorts start at £4K for a 1.1 4-door, there has to be scope for our chosen vehicles to be worth more, if only the wider market appreciated them. It's not just Quantums - look at early GTMs, Mini Marcos, Ginettas, Novas, etc. They all have the same problem. I don't know the answer, but, as a relative newby to the scene, it seems to me that there is scope for a gentle but effective publicity campaign to bring the attention of the wider enthusiast market to our area. There's both the Classic area, that must be getting bored with the same old cars by now, and seems to be getting more into modifications, which we do lots of, and there's the Top Gear market, that must be getting bored with looking at unaffordable, uninsurable supercars, whilst driving korean superminis on HP, with 4-figure insurance premiums. More interest = more buyers = better values for our cars? There, I've thrown a brick into the pond. What do you think? Dave. Im guessing it is 40L , petrol 10.1986- 6 166 798 because the very early tanks (which I have on at the mo) were the smaller ones and the xr2 filler seal wont fit the EFI tank according to my ford parts bloke to that only leaves the one above but ill check my number today for you On May 8, 7:50 pm, hansdefauwes hansdefau...@hetnet.nl wrote: I need a new petroltank for my saloon. Isn't the injection tank jus a 1/2barb outlet at the lowest point of the tank? You should be able to fix that, me thinks. And use external fuel pump/filter. We see into that with Fred's car, undergoing the zetec treatment this summer. After that we copy, Hans! [Quantum Owners] Re: Earth fault
Paul, A few months ago I was having the same problem on a 1992 Cooper. It is worthwhile checkin the dodgy loom connections behind the grill surround. There are a few rubber-packed rolled-copper strips where the ballpin type of wire connector are coupled. If you know what I mean. These are defenataly worth checking for bad connectorns due to oxydation. The loom is also in de grill-surround where the selftappers from the grill are fastened, so check if the looom is not fastened or damaged and youre placed the wires in the correct order. These were also placed wrongly on my friends Cooper. In this case, there was a colour change in the loom from blue/white to blue. The loom to the front of the car also goes through the inner wing (at the triangle, next to the common earth) and tend to shear the grommet, thus damaging the wires. Hope this is of some use, Good luck Rolf On 29 mrt, 20:43, Paul p.fenni...@cardiff-commissioning.co.uk wrote: Thanks for the info, it is a 90s version, but before the lastest problems the head lights were OK. [Quantum Owners] Re: talking about engine swaps-rocking horses
Yes, I'm leaving as much as possible on the new engine at the mo, with old ecu. Air mass meter in intake pipe (with the two spirals in it's separate channel for measuring) is of different outer shape because of the diameters of the pipe and airfilterbox. Will swap manifolds as well if nessesary, it is still on the old engine and look if there's any tempsensor I missed. (hardly, because all was marked!) Tried several times to relearn the ecu, and it did. It went better after a few miles. The exhaustsystem is untouched , exept for a new O2 sensor of equal typenumber by ford. If there are anymore pointers I'll let you know. (Or ask!)(You as well) rolf On 3 mei, 23:04, Jim Hearne j...@quantums.info wrote: I would suspect that when they swapped from the metal to the plastic inlet manifold that they also changed spec of some of the other parts, especially the injectors and MAF. They certainly did on the 1.8 Zetec when it went from the metal to plastic inlet manifolds. If you've now got a mixture of the new and the old parts then things won't work very well. I would have kept the metal inlet manifold and all sensors and fitted that onto the new engine. You should also have the air temperature sensor, the ecu uses it to compensate the mixture. It should have been on the inlet manifold on the alloy manifold and was probably in the airbox or the air intake pipe on the new engine. [Quantum Owners] Re: Carb problem on 1.4 CVH
Hi, Recently I encountered similar problems. After a sleeping policeman the engine lost power, but ran only just. Fortunately not far from home. Checking fuelfeed to carb was fine, I removed the jets for inspection. no problem found. then lifting the upperhalf of the carb to reveal the fuel chamber, I found a bolt m6x15 stuck under the float! Seems I have been driving more than 3 years with the bolt in the floatchamber! and now the float got stuck! But not all problems were solved , as I found out, because some days later the engine suddenly cutout at a roundabout. with coupling in I menaged to drive into a parkingspace. In the freezing cold I removed the jets again and these were blocked by a brownish substance. To find out were it came from, I looked into the floatchamber (again..) and found small particles of debris in it. These I had sucked up with a syringe to try to clean the chamber from foreighn obstacles. A day or so later the same thing happened and I was fustrated the car just menaged to drive to work on choke. Removing jets again..Looking in floatchamber; again...Debris sucked out Investigating the debris, it seems the cork gasket from the KN airfilter desintegrated and parts of it ended up in either the screwhole and pushed in, or were sucked in through the airvent hole in the metal carbgasket. I decided to get rid of the cork gasket all the same! In theory it can happen again if there is some debris left in one of the small fuelchannels, but hopefully not! Hoped this helps you, or a laughing story anyway, Cheers,Rolf PS when I just bought the Q, it developped similar problems on the motorway and I had to drive very economical to keep the engine going. This turned out to be the inline fuelfilter. On 14 jan, 20:14, Paschalc paschalcarr...@iol.ie wrote: Firstly, a Happy New Year to all from us in Ireland and hopefully 2010 will be another cracker. [Quantum Owners] britishcarfestival dot NL
Hello all, In a few weeks you're welcome to gather at http://www.britishcarfestival.nl/engels_index.html. As you can see, a few Robin Hoods are crossing the English Channel to attend and make it a good weekend out. As a Quantum owner I personally team up with Midas and Mini Marcos owners, as there a no Quantums to team up with! Please get in touch if you would like to form a Q group, waving our flag amongst all these British Bred classics. The venue is no more than 3 hours from Calais, and the are many possible ways of staying overnight. Andy promised to come with 20 Qs if I organise a meeting abroad. Andy, you can see this as a warmer, pilot or just a grand day out! May be next year we can make a combination of this event, or with a large picknick-in -the-park. Anyone interested? [Quantum Owners] Re: Detling
A lovely day it was! A good turn up of Q's and a warm welcome, from both Kent kitCarClub and QOC, and those two combined and mixed up! It took some effort to get there due to a puncture (inBelgium already!) but drove nie and easy on a smaller tyre. Luckily it was a proper tyre, only the smallest I could find on a ford rim. Nice talking to you lot and thanks for may advices etc. robert, andy, I left the MK1 headlights at Ben, may be you can still have ém if he can part with them. There was quite a bit of rust on the refletor, but still usable. Got a pit in the windscreen on our way back and hit a pothole , again in belg...@#$%^*! where does it end? Nothing in comparision to the (7?) car on the motorway, which was nothing more than a pile of ashes when the fire went outWhat a shame . See you next time!
