Also having this issue when playing streams while connected to both
mysb.com and SBS. So far it has not happened often enough to establish
any sort of pattern but will keep an eye on it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Question about mysqueezebox.com requirement

2009-12-04 Thread Mnyb

Don't forget the History the old ip3k based players are *really' thin
clients eg the SB3 SB2 transporter and BOOM .
These can't do a thing without a server, now we have Radio and Touch
that have some processing power on their own .

Now how to make these different products behave with a common interface
in a seamless way .

They still opted for the client server model of doing it, or more like
client-server-mysbs.com com as even the server uses mysbs.com in the
background, for localisation account verification for your music
services and such.

This makes even more sense in a multiplayer setup, how can anyone be
content with one squeezebox ;) Then a server and/or mysbs.com as a
central hub makes even more sense. You have a common place for
configuration and managing your players.
If you use a local server you have excellent synchronization of players
if you want that (well you can sync via mysbs.com to but don't expect
100% perfect )

Regarding how to reproduce it, I was able to get it to happen within,
on average, about 5 minutes, by changing stations. It seem to happen
much quicker after a reboot, sometimes the second or third station I
would select. On casual listening, it would occur about once a day. It
would even happen when I selected an mp3 from my streambox server.

The problem would occur while trying to start the stream. All sound
would stop, even menu sounds, and would only be restored by a reboot.

I started a thread on this earlier, but got little feedback, with only
one other confirmed case. My radio was doing this on a daily basis, so
I assumed that it was not a common/software problem (based on the lack
of responses) and returned it.

I purchased another one, but only received it a couple of days ago. I
haven't seen the problem, yet, but I really haven't used it much at this

I'm pretty sure the Roku devices don't have the same requirements as a

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Question about mysqueezebox.com requirement

2009-12-04 Thread CECat

You guys may be right -- Roku may be connecting to a server behind the
scenes without my knowledge. If so, it has had remarkable uptime record,
as the only time we've ever had a problem has been when our internet
connection was down for some reason.

The thing that has been scaring me has been the posts (granted, most
seem to be in Europe) from folks losing ability to use the device and/or
to have the alarm go off because the server is down. I do know that the
Roku gets its time from the atomic clock, not the Roku server -- that is
listed on amongst the features on their website. Nonetheless, I am
giving the SB radio a shot and have signed up for an account with
mysqueezebox.com.

So far, I must say that I am impressed with the ability to customize
the display on the radio -- for a bit I was worried about the number of
menus one had to go through to set a 30-minute sleep shut-off, as that's
important to my husband, who is very techno-impatient. :) Now, if the
music actually starts to play at alarm time in the morning, I'll be
satisfied.

Except that won't help Susan as she specifically does not want a
computer running. I agree wholeheartedly that the Radio should offer a
connection to either SBS or MySB at initial setup. But essentially one
or the other must be chosen, and for use absent a computer then a MySB
account & setup is the only real option.

I think the whole SN/MySB handling all Music Services and Apps is a
great way to go. A one time setup online at MySB.com and all my SB
players will function anywhere, anytime, with or without a computer.
Once setup one never needs to log in to their MySB account ever again.
:)

Susan: Try it, you'll like it! :) Create a free www.MySqueezeBox.com
account using your computer, enter that login info onto your Radio at
setup, you are off and running.

But, I'd bet once you see the offerings & potential of the Radio and
the numerous free Apps, you'll be logging on again to try more Apps and
free services. :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Question about mysqueezebox.com requirement

2009-12-04 Thread toby10

Well, your computer has an operating system and other components a
simple "thin client" device does not have. SB players are "thin
clients" that require a connection to a server to function. And,
actually, whatever program on your computer is playing the station
stream is basically acting as the "server" per se.

Absent a server some of the SB players have limited abilities like play
from the line-in source and/or will (should) function as an alarm clock
with a basic audio alarm (no stream).

As for Roku I'd guess that your Roku player connects to the online Roku
server without you even knowing it. But again, I've never used a Roku
player so this is just a guess. My Yamaha AVR connects to (and only to)
the vTuner online server.

CECat.

Little do you know that by purchasing a Squeeze device you have played
into their plans to market you relentlessly through their Squeezebox
website.

This is a marketing decision made by Logitech. There is really no
reason that the Radio "must" be connected to the Internet for setup and
if you do some searching around you will find some workarounds that
exist to let you get the radio set up without connection to
MySqueezebox.com.

I run my own Squeezebox Server at home for streaming of my own music
library and simply point all of my Squeezeboxes to that.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Question about mysqueezebox.com requirement

2009-12-04 Thread CECat

Hi Toby,

Thanks for the quick reply. However, I promise that my Roku has no
server connection -- all it requires is a wireless connection to the
internet. No computer is necessary at all unless you want to access
music stored on your hard drive. For internet radio, nothing additional
is needed. I wasn't required to sign up for Radio Roku in order to get
my radio up and running.

I may be a little thick :) but I'm having trouble understanding why
there would need to be a server somewhere in order to play internet
radio -- I can stream the very same stations on my computer directly
from the radio station itself, so why is an intermediary such as
mysqueezebox.com needed for the radio to do so? IOW, if it can access
mysqueezebox.com, why can't it access the radio station's stream, as
it's simply another url?

I am probably excessively concerned, but, unfortunately, I didn't find
all the posts about the many problems with SB Radio until after my order
was on the way to me. I'm trying to avoid getting stuck with an
expensive device that won't perform the function for which is was
purchased, so am a bit hesitant to fire it up without being pretty sure
it will work as planned.

Cheers,
Susan

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Question about mysqueezebox.com requirement

2009-12-04 Thread toby10

I've never used Roku, but a SB player like your Radio must be connected
to a server, somewhere, somehow to play a stream.
You can connect your Radio to the SBS 7.4 server on your computer or
you can connect it to the MySB.com server online (no computer needed).

[SlimDevices: Radio] Question about mysqueezebox.com requirement

2009-12-04 Thread CECat

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm a new convert whose entire
previous experience is with Roku products. My new Squeezebox radio just
arrived, and in reading the forums here, I see a lot of folks having
issues with mysqueezebox.com server outages, etc.

Hoping to avoid all that, since ALL I want to do is to be awakened to
internet radio each morning and don't need all the other whistles and
bells, I am trying to figure out how to simply configure the radio with
2-3 preset internet radio streams.

The initial instructions seem to force me to connect to
mysqueezebox.com even to get the thing up and running -- why? With my
Roku, all I have to do is enter the url of the desired station; no
connection to RadioRoku is necessary whatsoever (it *can* be used if one
desires, but not required.

Thanks for any clarification!
Susan

set up was super. I hooked Ethernet to it and it 1ST ask for a update
and it did it.

I took video of me opening the box and turning it on how it worked so
good.

My Slimp3 remote works with it. The Squeezebox Radio don't come with a
remote or battery.

To bad it's shinny gets figger prints all over it.

I my upload the video to you tube soon. If it turned out good. I have
not looked at it yet.

Were is the link to buy the battery for it? After the Ethernet I set it
up for wireless too. It be neat to just move it all around wile still
working.

I get all I need in a remote from iPeng. If the SB Radio came standard
with a remote and battery at a list price of $249.99, then I could see
the point that the Logitech did not want to sell items separately.
However, since they are, then the battery and remote should be sold
separately.

Anyway, the battery will be good for a back-up to my alarm if I have a
power failure -- But only when Logitech fixes the bug when the back-up
alarm DOES NOT trigger if my internet connection is down. (They have it
scheduled as a fix in v8.00, so it looks like it will be awhile before I
need the battery

[SlimDevices: Radio] Unable to Connect to Server

2009-12-04 Thread Kenneth

Greetings,

I will probably have to call tech support on this but while I'm waiting
to get time to make the call I thought I would give the community a try
first to see if we can solve my problem.

I seem to be unable to connect my Squeezebox radio to the server. Here
is some information on my setup and what I've already tried.

* I am running the server on a Microsoft Home Server which I have it
setup as a plugin. I have verified that the Squeezebox server is
running.
* I have setup the Squeezebox radio on my wireless network and it can
connect to mysqueezebox.com and I am able to control it remotely and get
all the functionality there.
* I have uninstalled and reinstalled the server and I have also reset
the squeezebox to factory settings. I then set everything back up
without any luck.
* I am not running any firewall software on the server beyond what
comes on WHS. I have tried turning that off completely without any
luck.
* I have verified that my Windows Home Server can ping the Squeezebox
radio.
* Both are on the same segment of my home network. (First 3 sets of
numbers match.)

Is there anything else I can try to get them to connect? Anything I'm
missing?

Thanks for reading this posting and help that can be provided!

Ken

Yes, you're absolutely right. Excellent point. My particular example
turned out to be a worst case scenario: the Boom remote (which has no
alphanumeric keys, and therefore no good for presets) pointed at the SB
Radio before anything had been selected to play.

If that is the case, I would suggest to move the firmware release of
the radio in the 7.5.0 branch back to the same revision as the 7.4.1
release and do not update it until such bugs are solved.
That version (r7915) works better on the radio compared to the current
revision in the 7.5.0 branch, and pressing one time to many on the
navigation wheel when the alarm goes off results in updating to the
buggy r8172 version which cannot be stopped... Quite annoying...
