[RBW] Riv Riders group on Chicago Chainlink

2014-02-27 Thread Marc Irwin
I just opened a Rivendell Riders group on the Chainlink bulletin board in
Chicago. I know there are a lot of Riv riders in the area from Grand
Rapids around the Lake to Milwaukee and it will hopefully give the area
people a chance to exchange ideas and get together occasionally.

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis w/ some fatties!

2014-02-27 Thread Chris Lampe 2
I feel your pain.

My existance right now consists of obsessing about whether to buy a Troll
frameset or simply transfer my new components over to the old 820.
Sometimes I even throw getting an Ogre frameset into the mix, which would
let me use my Rich Lesnik built 700c wheels. It's usually some outside
influence that leads me to consider the Ogre, something like reading
someone's experiences or rewatching Ride the Divide. It usually just
takes one comparison ride between my 700c and 26 bike to swing me back to
26 wheels.

I've read that the WBT Nano is the number one choice for Great Divide
riders. It appears to be a not-too-aggressive multi-surface tire of high
quality. It might be worth some research if you haven't looked into it
yet.

I'll be curious to hear your experiences with your Atlantis. That bike is
basically the prototype for what I want, although sometimes I find myself
wanting an actual MTB, like the Troll.

 Chris,

Interesting, the 26 Atlantis I'm building up as a off road beasty for
rough stuff bike camping...I'm still debating what knobby tires I'll run? I
currently have some Big Ben's for it but not sure they're the road tires
I'll want. Lots of folks swear by the Schwalbe supreme's.

Anyway, one of my concerns lately with all the talk of 650b 29ers is
riding for distance...it seems so many folks are super concerned with
efficiency, read that as speed. So yeah it has been messing with my head.
Just need to build it and ride it, then I'll have some feedback.

Keep in mind that I'm not a mountain biker and other than riding gravel

I can't say how much is the fat tires themselves. The difference between
my 40mm and my 55mm tires is far larger than the numbers would suggest. I
think it's that old volume thingwith the 55mm tires having a lot more.
The closest I've come to riding a 700c fatter tire was a short test ride
on a Surly Karate Monkey and it lacked something that both my old 820 and
the new Troll I test rode have.

I tend to ride like a little kid, meaning I don't ride from point A to
point B. My favorite place to ride (when it's not packed with pedestrians)
is the walking path in our subdivision. This is a typical sidewalk on
gently rolling terrain and I don't think there is a true straight stretch
of sidewalk that is longer than a few yards. Tons of curves with some
twists and turns while speeding up and slowing down, according to the path.
My experience is that the 26 wheels accelerate faster and are far more
maneuverable than 700c wheels. The entry I use to the walkway is a gutter
that is at a 90 degree angle to the sidewalk with curb on either side so
there is no room for error when making that turn. It's a bit scary on 700c
 x 40mm tires but a breeze on 559 x 55mm tires. I think it boils down to a
ride that is very nimble and quick while still being very smooth and cushy.

I've read numerous accounts that suggest 700c wheels rollover things
better than 26 wheels and that 700c wheels maintain their momentum better
and the latter, at least, seems to be true in my experience (I never roll
over things so no experience with the first). Riding my 700c bike is fun
but almost bordering on boring. Riding a 26 bike is both exhilarating and
it literally makes me feel like a little kid again. For me, a long ride is
10 miles so the 26 wheels are a no-brainer. If I was more into traveling
and riding longer distances, I'd have to do some soul-searching before
making a firm commitment to one or the other.

[RBW] Re: 25.4 Albastache?

2014-02-27 Thread iamkeith
Thanks, Michael. If I understand correctly, you're saying to try to find
an albastache bar that mistakenly had the wrong collar installed - not to
find a smaller collar alone, to swap. ( I guess that's the only way it
would work, so of course that's what you're saying.) I'll ask Riv, but
I won't push them if it's really a time sink. I might take the
opportunity to ask if there are plans for bars in the other size though.

I find it kind of curious that they would have chosen the 26.0 if there was
going to be only one option. There are currently three Nitto moustache
bars in rotation in my household, and they're all 25.4. And several dirt
drop stems, all in 26.0. Sometimes they get used together with shims, but
more often not. It's sure nice to have the flexibility of multiple options.

 Preposterous!?!?! - you say?

In 2013, I bought an advertised 26.0 NITTO Moustache from RBW and it
actually had a 25.4 collar - yet it was the correct Nitto road bike
'stache, not the NITTO MTB 'stache (which is 25.4, but the curves are
different, I think). One must have been mistakenly shipped to them along
with the regular 26-ers from NITTO.

Me and them were both puzzled about this, but there it was, stamped into
the collar and calipered to show it. *The folks at RBW were very,
very nice to me* and let me exchange it for another bar.

I would not alter your bar. Doesn't sound safe at all. Maybe others could
 chime in.

I built a wheel with the SRAM 2-speed hub (originally for my SimpleOne, but
have since moved it to a different bike). I love this hub. It is different
than the SA kickback in that it is not a kickback, but instead shifts
automatically from one speed to the other at a preset point. For my wheel
and tire size, that worked out to be around 12 mph. I preferred to have it
shift at a slightly higher rate and, with instructions found on the
internets, I was able to raise the shift point to about 15 mph. After a
best guess of 15,000 miles or so, I can say that this hub seems very
reliable. When I did open it up to change the shift points, I did clean it
out real good, repacked the bearings and added some Phil's oil to splash
around in there.

RE: [RBW] Re: Mini-Beam

2014-02-27 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
I built a wheel for my MB-2 Resurrectio project using the SA 2 speed coaster
brake kickback hub. So far the hub has been very reliable, and it’s a great
simple solution if you’re looking for just a little more gear range. If I were
doing it again, however, I’d prefer not to use the coaster brake iteration of
the Kickback; sometimes braking and shifting attempts interact in an unexpected
way (probably my lack of finesse). SA does make a non-coaster brake version,
and I bet that’s terrific.

Not to be rude, but why do you need to keep your 25.4 stem besides cost?
Could you get away with the Nitto Technomic, which is still a nice enough

idea. Or maybe someone has a 26.0mm stem that would work for you. I might

from Riv, I discovered (as most of you probably already knew) that they
only come in 26.0 clamp diameter.

Darn it! I really need to keep my 25.4 stem.

Has anybody ever had or heard of in success reducing the diameter of the
clamp area on a bar like this? They have the extra aluminum sleeve, so I
don't think the bar integrity would be compromised. But I don't have any
idea how to do it evenly so that there's still a nice round section.
Probably just file and sand, I guess? My stem is welded steel, so it could
conform to a slightly irregular shape better than a forged one could.

Re-sale-ability be damned, is this a bad idea? Likewise, has anybody
heard rumors of Riv eventually releasing these in both clamp size
 options? Thoughts appreciated...

[RBW] Reflection on S24O/Mo

2014-02-27 Thread Deacon Patrick
Hughes almost two month journey in this endeavor and the challenge he's having
fitting in February's S24O got me thinking on a number of fronts, and I'd love
to hear other's thoughts:

-- The intriguing thing to me about going at least once a month is the
creativity and wonder and joy of experiencing beauty in all types of weather.
Well, for me personally, I get that range already, so I don't need the
imposition of whether I go by bike, ski pulk, or for more than one night. If I
accidentally accomplish it, then cool. Grin.

-- I have enough challenges that for me the idea of an imposed schedule would
be a burden rather than a freedom, though I can easily see how the structure
could lead to freedom for others.

That's as far as I've gotten and I'd love to hear your experience and thoughts.

OH..I .see what you mean. That is a problem. Albastache bars would be nice
but...I guess it's down to flat bars or maybe with a slight rise in 25.4? I
know in the Bstone era there were 25.4 M-bars made by Hsin Leung which were
not exactly the same as the Nitto-built 26.0 on the X0-1's. Maybe a pair of
those could be found on fleabay or craigslist? They are not the jewelry
that the Nittos are, but if Grant specced them on the midrange models ,
they're not crappy either

A lot of internet bobbers are on this list, but perhaps you could try
posting on internet-bob, too. Good luck with your search; sounds like a
neat bike.

(I am a big fan of Moustache bars myself; I have them on 3 bikes and I have
2 NIP just in case. 1 pair is going on my Peugeot, though as its bars are
the stock ones that came off my X0-1. A good idea to replace them after 20
years, I think)

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis w/ some fatties!

2014-02-27 Thread Hugh Smitham
Chris,

Yeah it's a pain I have to live with. I'll survive.

List member Mike Shiller posted a WTB release note about the Nano heck it
may have been on this same topic? It gets all jumbled together :-) But the
Nano looks interesting and a tire of serious contention, it's relativity
light weight, has good knobby tread and is supposed to roll pretty fast on
pavement. There are so many choices in the 26 field.

I think that's interesting that you really do prefer the 26 even after
riding the 700c. One of the things I liked about the 700c when I had a
race/road bike was just how much distance I could cover quickly. Once you
get those wheels up to speed they're really efficient. But that's usually a
bike with only one purpose. These days I like to go where I want to go and
that means dirt too and carrying bags.

In terms of the Troll and Ogre, I don't really know enough about them to
really speak cogently but the fat tire bikes are tempting as it would open
up previously un-ride able areas to me. But then I've committed myself to
the Rivendell's. I'd have to sell one of them to buy another bicycle, so
I'd say I'm a long way off from pulling the trigger on one of those. Funny
how we are influenced by those outside opinions, sometimes with little to
no firm merit.

The ride the divide is awesome. I think the Atlantis could be used for that
ride running 2.1 or larger tires. But I'd do it on a more leisurely pace
not to compete.

I'm hoping to document the build up of the Atlantis and give feedback on
the differences between the AAH and the Atlantis. It should be a fun
process.

let me use my Rich Lesnik built 700c wheels.

That bike is

lot.

The tires did great on the streets which are still a bit of a mess in my

True but in reality not a huge difference. A BQ article on tires contained

plan to buy at least one set of knobby tires and they are high on my list.

Surly markets the Ogre and the Troll as touring bikes but they are
literally just a Karate Monkey (29'er MTB) and a 1 x 1 (26 MTB) with all
the braze-ons you need for touring plus they have mounts for canti-studs,
which is huge for me.

I would love to spend some time riding 55mm BA's on a 700c bike,
particularly something like the Hunqapillar or Velo-Orange's upcoming
Camargue. I might find it's more the tires than the wheel size.

So many ideas to try.so little money to spend trying them.

List member Mike Shiller posted a WTB release note about the Nano heck it

I think the Atlantis could be used for
that ride running 2.1 or larger tires. But I'd do it on a more leisurely
 pace not to compete.

I'm hoping to document the build up of the Atlantis and give feedback on
the differences between the AAH and the Atlantis. It should be a fun
 process.

[RBW] Re: Mini-Beam

2014-02-27 Thread Philip Williamson
I have a Quickbeam. I'm obsessed with gearing, and always come back to
about a 72. Currently I'm re-enamored of fixed gear riding, with a single
44t ring, a 15t cog and a 17/21 dingle cog.

I do have a Sachs Automatic wheel with a coaster brake, and I agree that
the coaster brake messes up my mojo. I have considered the S2 (no C) hub,
and will probably build one at some point. The Quickbeam is great - I'd
ride mine anywhere, in any terrain, on any surface.

have the wheels already to get it on the road, you might be surprised at

nothing wrong if you really want to mess with the SA 2 speeds, but there
is something pure about a single-speed QB that changes your perspective on
 riding.

should be a great project and I intend to take it slowly and thoughtfully
as I've never built up a non-derailleur bicycle. Initial thought was to
possibly try out the Sturmey-Archer 2-speed Kickback hub as the basis of a
wheel build and possibly a Sturmey-Archer crankset but I'll need to do some
homework on gearing, spacing, chainline etc. Nothing is set in stone at
the moment and each component will be a new decision point but, barring the
possible S-A components, it will clearly be a Rivendell build when it's
 done.

I enjoy this group very much and value your input, stories, and
camaraderie. Photos will prove the project is underway!

[RBW] Re: 25.4 Albastache?

 Kevin

To which I reply:

PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT

I have seen a number of aluminum handlebars fail, usually catastrophically,
often ending in horrible scenarios. (Full disclosure, 3 or 4 times, once
horribly, always scary.) 100% of the time it has been due to a mismatch in
handlebar sleeve diameter to stem bore diameter. A classic (pardon the
pun) situation is the dude who thinks his old (sorry, super cool vintage)
Cinelli or TTT (26.4mm) stem is close enough to his fancy 26.0mm
handlebar or vice versa but it is analogous to trying a 26 in a 25.4 stem.
Yes, you can get it to fit. The issue is that in order to get it tight
enough not to rotate you've got to torque the sh*t out of it. That results
in the bar going ever so slightly out of round, which creates two big
stress risers smack in the middle of the bar. Aluminum really doesn't like
this. Next time you are riding, particularly out of the saddle, try to
imagine how much force is applied due to the leverage from your hands (and
all your body weight) at the end of those bars to the junction of the stem
and bar. The reason we all love Nitto so much is because of their (real,
implied, imaginary?) higher standards of quality control. By jamming a
handlebar into a mismatched stem you will be defeating everything that
Nitto's engineers designed and putting yourself in real risk of serious
injury.

Sorry to yell, but this is a really dangerous idea and I can't address it
without envisioning the specter of my buddy's f*cked-up face after he hit
the ground due to forcing the wrong sized bar into a stem. His bike looked
wicked retro-cool though!!!

[RBW] Anyone in San Diego who can loan me a bike for two weeks?

2014-02-27 Thread Anton Tutter
My work is taking me to San Diego for two weeks at the end of
April/beginning of May. Naturally I'm going to want to have a bike with me
but there's no way my company is going to pay to ship a bike there and back.

So if anyone in SD has a bike they can loan me for a couple of weeks when
I'm out there, mostly for evening excursions and longer weekend rides, I'd
be most appreciative! And of course, I'm up for any rides as long as my
schedule will afford.

I ride road bikes sized 60-62 ctc seat tube and 67-69 cm ctc (top tube +
stem length combined).

Probably 10 years old actually. Those came out in 2003. How do I know that?

I think new Redwoods were offered by Riv for 2 only years or less.

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Chica Warrior Custom: the Build!

2014-02-27 Thread Tim Gavin
Yes, RJM is correct: the Phil Rivy hub is freewheel. You'd be limited to a
7-speed freewheel on the Phil.

If you want to run 9 speeds on the rear, you need a cassette hub. The Phil
cassette hub is almost $500, and is gorgeous. The mid-level Shimano hubs
are ~$50-75, and perfectly ok.

Nothing wrong with freewheels and freewheel hubs, however, and Phil FW hubs
are about the best. Freewheels put the pawls in the cheap, easily
replaceable part instead of inside the hub. I just rebuilt my ~20 yr old
Phil hubs with new sealed bearings (total cost ~$25), so they should be
good for another 20 years at least! And perfectly ok Shimano freewheels
are $15 each.

As for rear derailer, I've had good luck with last-generation MTB derailers
(9-speed MTB). XT would be great, Deore/LX is probably just about as good.
If you're going with 7-speed freewheel, you could use any MTB rear
derailer made in the last 25 years.

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis w/ some fatties!

2014-02-27 Thread Hugh Smitham
Doug,

What about the 700c wheel efficiency Vs. the 26wheel once they're rolling?
It's been my understanding one of the reasons many tour bikes are using 26
size wheels is they are easier to get a heavy mass rolling? Seems like that
would be true. So as I see it there's always a compromise in choosing a
wheel size. The 26 for carrying a load and it's maneuverability off road
are positive attributes and since your hauling stuff one would inherently
understand you won't be as quick as a race bike. Yet another reason folks
are always favoring multiple steeds and the N+1 factor as well.

True but in reality not a huge difference. A BQ article on tires

block maybe 4 tall (?). The difference in the angle was surprisingly
small personally I doubt I'd notice the difference.

If I was more into traveling
and riding longer distances, I'd have to do some soul-searching before
making a firm commitment to one or the other.

 iamkeith,

They sent me a 'stache with a collar that said 25.4 stamped on it. I
measured the clamp area, and found it to be smaller than the 26.0 stamped
stache I already had at home.

Maybe NITTO made a 25.4 and sent RBW one by accident in their regular 26.0
shipment.

I would never alter any handlebar. I am not saying look for a collar to
swap. I don't even think that would work or could be done anyway.
That would be altering the bar. Just see if NITTO made a 25.4 and sent it
to RBW by accident in their regular shipments of 26.0 bars.

[RBW] FS 2011 60cm Double TT Sam Hillborne 2.0

2014-02-27 Thread Steven Silbert

Here is an updated version of my previous post. Please email with any
questions!

I'm selling my 2011 60cm Double TT Sam Hillborne by Rivendell Bicycle
Works. I am the original owner and have rode the bicycle regularly for 2
years(I studied abroad for 1 year during which it was stored indoors). I
would like to sell the bike complete for $1000 excluding shipping, but if
someone would like to make an offer for frame and some combination of parts
thereof, I will definitely take that into consideration. And of course if
there is anyone within driving distance of Monterey Bay CA that would be
wonderful. Here is the link to the photos:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/118442524@N04/

I tried to include some of the beausage/scratches on the front of the
frame that has occurred from frequent locking and unlocking. The bike is in
otherwise great condition and rides as expected of a Rivendell!
The front rack, basket, bag and rear rack are not included in the purchase.
Here is a list of the parts.

Wheels: Mavic 32 hole open sport rims, front deore hub, rear deore lx hub,
shimano xtr 9spd 11-34 cassette.
Tires: Continental Contact
Nitto Noodle Handlebars 46cm
Tekro long-reach Brakes and Levers
Cloth tape
Shimano bar-end shifters
Crane bell
Stem: Nitto 60mm technomic
Crankset: Sugino double 34/44(I replaced the 48 ring with a 44 because
there isn't much flat terrain where I live)
Pedals: MKS Touring
Derailleurs: Front Campy, Rear Shimano XT 9 spd
The Seat post and Headset were the ones that came with the Sam from
Rivendell.
Brooks B-17 Saddle(broken in!)
SRAM chain

I'm also selling the rear rack which is a Velo Orange Campeur rear rack as
shown here:

http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/racks-decaleurs/campeur-rear-rack-1263.html

This is being sold separately for $100 excluding shipping. Pay pal is best
and easiest for me and again if you have any questions/offers please feel
free to ask. Hopefully when I'm making big $ in the future, Ill be in here
looking for a Hunqapillar!

The burdens in my life compel me to attempt a bike overnight a month.

I would characterize myself like those mustangs penned up rather than

If the process of attempting to do an overnight a month adds to my stress

I am a nomad and these foray's are my tether to who I am. Don't mistake me
I enjoy the comforts of modern living but there is a physical physic

said ... that's just stupid ... and now I use them . Angst over nothing.

I would leave the current stem alone. Leave the bars alone. Don't force
anything, don't modify anything. The parts you need to fit together exist,
and they will come to you and all this will seem like dream. Done Already
:)

because it could conform to the stem kind of like a band-clamp - as long

Thanks for all the thoughts... AND concerns!

If it's not open, surely you can find another stem that can offer the

[RBW] Aeropress review, ride report, and cycling legends.

2014-02-27 Thread jinxed
All rides are good rides...some rides are outstanding.

I had an unexpectedly outstanding one today.

Our temps and weather have been wavering the super cold / super nice line
seemingly every other day so when it's nice, I try to take advantage. Even
if it's just for a short jaunt. Well the forecast looked good for this
morning so I planned to run my errands on the bike today. GOOD call that.

First off, I headed down to my local cafe to answer the call of the
Aeropress. I had seen them in the shop a while ago and the owner and I have
discussed them several times. For whatever reason I never took the plunge.
(see what I did there?) Recent events have my wife drinking decaf, so
lately I have been brewing solo cups, or firing up the espresso machine.
This paired with the recent talk of the famous coffee syringe pushed me
over the edge. I hit the shop, purchased my wares, drank a cuppa, and
headed out to the next stop.

After 2 quick stops picking up shipping boxes and supplies for the ACW
mugs, I started for home. On a whim, I decided to take a small detour to
check out one of the dirt trails to see if it was close to dry from the
recent snowfall we've had. First off I discovered a cool spillway I had
ridden past a couple dozen times and never noticed. Then, as it turned out,
the trail was totally dry and rideable...and I was already there...and it
seemed a shame not to partakeso I took off!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/42027576@N00/12822717885/in/photostream/lightbox/

A few miles in, the dirt canal trail has a few single tracks that shoot off
into some denser wooded areas that I usually romp around on. Where the main
trail gets steady traffic, I'm lucky to see one or two people on the
singletrack. Today, I was rolling along through the twists and turns when I
decided to stop for a photo where the trees opened up.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/42027576@N00/12824281034/

As I was getting back on the bike, a gentleman walking his dog approached
me. He said hello with an accent, and asked how I liked the VP-001 pedals
on my Rambler. He said he had the same ones on his bike. Well as you can
imagine we started geeking out on cycling for a solid 40 minutes. Pedals,
gearing, climbing, steel frames, racing, cyclocross, Dutch Womens Field
Hockey. You know...the usual. During the conversation I learn the
following: his name is Fons, he is from the Netherlands, he lives a couple
streets away from me, and he enjoyed watching cyclocross racing in
europeand he mentioned his brother was a pretty good cyclist. As I
left, I asked his brothers name so I could look him up. Peter Post he
says...you'll see I look just like him! And he does...but he failed to
mention his brother was “De Keizer van de Zesdaagse” The name rung a
bell, but I couldn't place it till I got home.

HERE'S a link about Peter http://www.flandriabikes.com/heroes/peter-post

I know this isn't the most race-centric crowd, but I very much enjoy the
old tales of the spring classics.

As I was near home on my bike, he drove by with his dog and tooted his horn
waving out the window. I made a new friend in my hood! I'll hope to toast
over a pint some day and weave verbal tapestries of cycling stories!

So once home and settled down from the excitement, I decided to fire up the
Aeropress and see what the fuss is about. There are plenty
more in-depth reviews than I'll give here, but I will say the thing is
impressive.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/42027576@N00/12823290384/in/photostream/lightbox/

The things that stood out:

   - I never realized it was made by the Aerobie people! I LOVE their
flying rings and have been playing with them for well over ten years! Glad
to continue support of the company.
   - I assumed, but was happy to confirm it's a USA made product.
   - I also did not know it came with a bag, scoop, funnel, and holder for
the filters. Very nice kit indeed.
   - They say it's simple...but holy cow...it's REALLY simple!

I don't know if I got lucky with my grinder setting, or the thing is just
forgiving, but following the directions my plunge took right at 20 seconds
with what seemed like appropriate pressure. I was VERY pleased with the cup
it made. To clarify I was using the same beans I drip or pour over brew
with and this method sure brewed a smoother, sweeter and very enjoyable
coffee. It's also comically easy to clean up which is bonus for on the bike
brewing.

When you leave the house on a bike things have a way of becoming magical. I
like that.

Nitto 100% definitely without-a-question made the original moustache bars in
25.4. I owned a pair and sold them to a fellow member of this group. They are
out there. Would not be suprised if the made the albastache in 25.4- at least a
few and maybe just prototypes- but just speculating.

Cheers!

Re: [RBW] Riv Chica Warrior Custom: the Build!

2014-02-27 Thread Patrick Moore
It sounds very nice.

Kickstand: I assume it has a plate? Then for sure a 2-leg stand; there is
one that is advertised to be more stable than the Pletscher, which I found
rather useless with loaded panniers, but I forget who makes it -- it has a
much wider stance.

Phil bb. Amen.

Seatpost: if you are going to spend $100, why not the Nitto S83? It is
Rivendellian, after all. A very charitable donor practically gave one to me
for my Ram build. Best I've used (and I'm comparing it to the older, silver
aluminum Dura Aces on my other Rivs).

SON 28: If you are going SON, why not get the small, light, jewel-like one?
Or perhaps a very svelte, light, and almost jewel-like SP for less than
half the price of a SON?

What is a Claris headset? FWIW, my Tange roller ball has 12K miles the
several generations old Ultegra has 9 k miles, and both feel as new.

Water bottle cages: you can buy much more expensive and somewhat prettier
ones, but the King Iris is the no b-s top of the line, and pretty, too. (I
switched to Irises after breaking a couple of the the jewel-like but
delicate Nitto butterfly cages.)

Lights: I have no experience with the Supernova, but the old model Edeluxe
is wonderful, and the new model is said to be brighter and wider. Me, with
my bad night vision, I find the old one fine.

Please post photos as and when ...

 Brooks Champion Flyer Select
 Bullmoose Boscos
 Shimano MTP Silver brake levers
 Paul Thumbies
 Miesha Grips
Sugino XD2 Double Wide Low with 170 cranks
SRAM 9 speed cassette 11-34 teeth
 Claris Front Derailer
Shimano XT or Deore Rear Derailer (undecided; opinions?)
a kickstand, a few water bottle cages, Sackville Flaps
and a friend is making locally-sourced cedar fenders with me back home!

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis w/ some fatties!

2014-02-27 Thread Dave Johnston
Anne,

You asked how big a tire the 26 Atlantis takes. My early model Atlantis
has 70mm of clearance at the narrowest spot (the chainstays). I would think
that would mean you could run 60mm tires or about 2.25. However note that
many tires are quite a bit smaller than they advertise, for instance the
tires I run on the Atlantis are Schwalbe Kojak 26x2 (559-50) and actually
measures 44mm on Maverick rims. Knobbies on the other hand can stick out
past the casing width, so sometimes it's trial and error.

OH!!! I almost forgot! For the primal eaters among us who like to indulge
in the dark chocolate. I found this bar from Vosges that I really like. The
coconut ash banana intrigued me. As the name suggests, it does in fact
contain coconut charcoal. The crazy thing is, it smells like a campfire!
Not sure if that's a good or pad thing, but I find it enjoyable. It's has a
grittier texture akin to an Oaxacan chocolate which I also like. Nice dark
flavor and subtle sweetness. One square is a perfect side mated to an

years(I studied abroad for 1 year during which it was stored indoors). I
would like to sell the bike complete for $1000 excluding shipping, but if
someone would like to make an offer for frame and some combination of parts
thereof, I will definitely take that into consideration.

The front rack, basket, bag and rear rack are not included in the
purchase. Here is a list of the parts.

Wheels: Mavic 32 hole open sport rims, front deore hub, rear deore lx hub,
 shimano xtr 9spd 11-34 cassette.
 Tires: Continental Contact
 Nitto Noodle Handlebars 46cm
 Tekro long-reach Brakes and Levers
 Cloth tape
 Shimano bar-end shifters
 Crane bell
 Stem: Nitto 60mm technomic
Crankset: Sugino double 34/44(I replaced the 48 ring with a 44 because
there isn't much flat terrain where I live)
 Pedals: MKS Touring
Derailleurs: Front Campy, Rear Shimano XT 9 spd
The Seat post and Headset were the ones that came with the Sam from
 Rivendell.
 Brooks B-17 Saddle(broken in!)
 SRAM chain

I'm also selling the rear rack which is a Velo Orange Campeur rear rack
 as shown here:

 http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/racks-decaleurs/campeur-rear-rack-1263.html

This is being sold separately for $100 excluding shipping. Pay pal is best
and easiest for me and again if you have any questions/offers please feel
free to ask. Hopefully when I'm making big $ in the future, Ill be in here
 looking for a Hunqapillar!

[RBW] Re: How many mountain bikes do you own?

2014-02-27 Thread Jeff Ong
I have a slightly ridiculous number of mountain bikes, although only a few
of them regularly get taken off-road. I've got a long travel Santa Cruz
Huckler and a modern (2005-ish) Klein Attitude hardtail. Having at least
front suspension really does make a huge difference for modern, very
aggressive trails, I've reluctantly decided. Also, I discovered that as a
guy in my 40's, I recover a lot quicker if I ride suspended.

That said, I've also got a MB-Zip which is ridiculously light and fun to
ride, a very early fillet-brazed Mt. Goat, a nice mid-80's fillet brazed
Ritchey, and an early 90's Alpinestars elevated chainstay bike that I
converted to a ridiculous fixed gear after the derailleur hanger bent
irreparably. Oh, and my daily rider (apart from my Rambouillet) is a mid
90's Voodoo Bizango converted to drop bars, with fender/rack mounts I
brazed on myself. That one still sees quite a bit of dirt, too.

In all honesty, the Privateer is identical to the Pake C'mute, with a few

I'm selling my 2011 60cm Double TT Sam Hillborne by Rivendell Bicycle

years(I studied abroad for 1 year during which it was stored indoors). I
would like to sell the bike complete for $1000 excluding shipping, but if
someone would like to make an offer for frame and some combination of parts
thereof, I will definitely take that into consideration.

The front rack, basket, bag and rear rack are not included in the
purchase. Here is a list of the parts.

Wheels: Mavic 32 hole open sport rims, front deore hub, rear deore lx
hub, shimano xtr 9spd 11-34 cassette.
 Tires: Continental Contact
 Nitto Noodle Handlebars 46cm
 Tekro long-reach Brakes and Levers
 Cloth tape
 Shimano bar-end shifters
 Crane bell
 Stem: Nitto 60mm technomic
Crankset: Sugino double 34/44(I replaced the 48 ring with a 44 because
there isn't much flat terrain where I live)
 Pedals: MKS Touring
Derailleurs: Front Campy, Rear Shimano XT 9 spd
The Seat post and Headset were the ones that came with the Sam from
 Rivendell.
 Brooks B-17 Saddle(broken in!)
 SRAM chain

I'm also selling the rear rack which is a Velo Orange Campeur rear rack
 as shown here:

 http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/racks-decaleurs/campeur-rear-rack-1263.html

This is being sold separately for $100 excluding shipping. Pay pal is
best and easiest for me and again if you have any questions/offers please
feel free to ask. Hopefully when I'm making big $ in the future, Ill be in
 here looking for a Hunqapillar!

[RBW] A lugged steel boomerang? My Hillborne is back!

2014-02-27 Thread Bill Lindsay

In 2009 I became a Rivendell owner. I bought a 56cm Samuel Hillborne and
it kicked off my second-life in cycling. The reason I got a flickr account
was because of my Hillborne. Here's the first flickr photo I ever uploaded:

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2662/4201002059_fe813d0b60_z.jpg

I've done a lot of buying and selling of bikes. My Hillborne got built up
in a few different ways, in 2010 and 2011. One of the coolest was this
slick monstercross setup:

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4095/5604248171_e9f4b2942c_z.jpg

Around that time (April 2011) we had scraped together every penny we had to
move up to a larger house. Amidst the scraping, I decided to sell the
Hillborne, with the notion that when I could afford it I would buy a 58cm
Atlantis to replace it. I sold it to a nice friend of a friend. I always
missed it a little bit.

Fast forward to 2013, I got the family to agree to send me to live-in
framebuilding school in Arizona. A two-week course building a lugged steel
frameset. As I thought about what I wanted and it was: a 700c road bike,
that'll take 38-40mm tires, cantilever brakes, 135mm rear end. Where my
Black Mountain is a great road bike for 28-32mm tires, I wanted a great
road bike for 35-45mm tires. I bought a set of 700x38 Soma C-Lines and
started pulling the build kit together. I had the full build kit done,
when it turned out that the scheduling for the frame building class didn't
work out, so we bagged that idea.

A little while later a little bird told me that the fellow who had bought
my Hillborne never got around to building it, so I reached out to him.
Sure enough it was still hung up in his den, and lo and behold he was
willing to sell it back to me for the same price I sold it to him for. So,
now I'm the re-owner of a lugged steel boomerang! Throw it away and three
years later it comes right back. Stay tuned for the build!

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis w/ some fatties!

2014-02-27 Thread cyclotourist
IIRC, Bike Quarterly suggested that there is a sweet spot for wheel
diameter/circumference. Basically 622X28mm (686 diameter), 584X42mm (676
diameter), 559X55mm (677 diameter) all were pretty close to it. So the
fatter the tire, the smaller the wheel.

using 26 size wheels is they are easier to get a heavy mass rolling? Seems
like that would be true. So as I see it there's always a compromise in
choosing a wheel size. The 26 for carrying a load and it's maneuverability
off road are positive attributes and since your hauling stuff one would
inherently understand you won't be as quick as a race bike. Yet another
reason folks are always favoring multiple steeds and the N+1 factor as well.

True but in reality not a huge difference. A BQ article on tires
contained a graphic comparing the angle of a 700 wheel vs a 26 against a
block maybe 4 tall (?). The difference in the angle was surprisingly
small personally I doubt I'd notice the difference.

Hugh, I look forward to comparing my 700 wheeled Atlantis to your 26.

I can't say how much is the fat tires themselves. The difference
between my 40mm and my 55mm tires is far larger than the numbers would
suggest. I think it's that old volume thingwith the 55mm tires having
a lot more. The closest I've come to riding a 700c fatter tire was a short
test ride on a Surly Karate Monkey and it lacked something that both my old
820 and the new Troll I test rode have.

If I was more into traveling
and riding longer distances, I'd have to do some soul-searching before
making a firm commitment to one or the other.

 slick monstercross setup:

Around that time (April 2011) we had scraped together every penny we had
to move up to a larger house.

I really wanted to attempt the Bike Overnight a month club (my camping
