2015-04-25 Thread Liesl
Late on the thread here, but I have a 46, 50, and 51 Riv's all with squeezy
space for saddle bags. Carradice Barley can really tuck in there and hold a
good amount. I've also found the marks mini to be really really adjustable and
I bet one could angle it to fit its tombstone under the seat.

+1 on a light Ti tubus rear rack. Pricey but barely noticeable. I think it's
the fly.

I'm surprised there is that much variation based on bar choice. Seems

return the panaracers in June.

The bike rides and handles so nicely. It has become the bike I want to ride

Thanks to all who shared photos and information earlier in this thread (last

July of 1996 (G96042). It doesn't matter to my riding enjoyment what model
it is, but I am curious and take pride, like all of you, in my Rivendells.
So, how to learn more about the frame?
Also, does anyone have photos of their Rivendell Road (Standard) bike to

2015-04-25 Thread Patrick Moore
Well, chore loads can use other containers, too. But rack + panniers is a
good choice precisely because it's flexible: 2500 ci, or nothing, or
anything in between. For daytrips I can use a single small Packer Sport.

That said, on bikes that aren't used regularly for bulky or heavy loads, I
prefer to forego a rack and use the appropriately sized seat bag. As with
the OP, I don't have clearance for even a small Carradice, so the Pika is a
very good solution -- and of course there are others.

[RBW] Re: Shimano Bar End Shifter Install Question

Can confirm with last two. Those ridges are in friction mode. The bumps are
ridges within the shifting mechanism which help keep the shift lever in
place while in friction mode.

hitting small bumps or ridges as I move it up and down. Is this normal?

It has full range of motion and seems to shift up and down as needed. I
guess that I was expecting it to be smooth for a lack of a better way to
say it. Not complaining, I just don't have much experience to compare it
 to.

I installed it per the Shimano instructions. The parts seem to fit

Hey Drew,

Selling without a wheelset is no fun, everyone wants to go away with a bike

selling.

Are you located in the bay area? I might have something cheaper in my shed.

[RBW] Re: FS Quickbeam 54cm

2015-04-25 Thread 'john elliott' via RBW Owners Bunch
Almost everyone who was interested in this wanted just the frame and
forks... so,

Frame forks and headset for $600. If you want the wheelset, I'll sell that
separately for $100 with the very worn jack brown blues. The S3X wheel is
going for $150, even though it's brand new. It includes the cable and bar
end shifter and other bits that came with it, but no cog.

Thanks.

On Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at 12:08:44 PM UTC-8, john elliott wrote:

 Hi,
After careful deliberation I am deciding to offer my Quickbeam for sale.
It's one of the green one's. 54 cm. I bought it new as a frame and fork,
but it's pretty close to stock. It has a set of stock quickbeam wheels
that I bought from someone who modified their quickbeam to 650b.

It has a phil wood bottom bracket that was rebuilt at phil wood just
before I installed it. At the moment it has an old no name saddle as Ive
been working on recovering the brooks saddle that was on it. I could
include the brooks if anyone is interested in a recovered saddle.

The handlebar is an albatross bar that is flipped upside down and with
about an inch cut off the ends. Nitto dirt drop stem. The seat post is
decent, off an older 80's vintage trek. Pedals are shimano, the ones that
are spd on one side and standard cage pedal on the other side.

It has a rear rack and fenders (the back one has about 6 inches cut off,
 to facilitate wheel removal.)

I've committed the sin of removing the decals as well. I'm taking it in
tomorrow to get it tuned up and cleaned up a bit and I'll post more photos
as soon as it gets back.

It does have a few nicks in the paint, but nothing more than that. I'm
thinking between $1000-1200 ish but I am open to offers. If no one is
interested I'll probably list it on craigslist in a week or two.

I live in San Francisco and I would prefer to sell to someone in the
region, but I wouldn't completely rule out shipping for the right situation.

 Thanks

PS: I also have an sturmey archer S3X wheel that is not on the bike. I
honestly never used it or set it up, but I do have the bar end shifter,
cable and other bits. The rim is a velocity dyad if that makes any
difference. This could go with the bike, or perhaps be sold separately
 depending on interest.

[RBW] Re: Homer springeth green

2015-04-25 Thread Bob Cook
Michael,

Sorry for the delay. Didn't have time until today to take some measurements
that would confirm my impressions.

The comparison is hardly fair because of the difference in width: the
Noodle is nominally 46 cm and measures about 45 cm C-C where the ramps meet
the hoods; the GB Rando is nominally 42 cm and measures about 39 cm C-C at
the same place.

I prefer the narrower bars for shoulder and wrist comfort, and I much
prefer the gentle upward curves in the ramps of the GB Rando bar. By
contrast, on the Noodle and most other drop bars I often feel like I'm
sliding forward on the ramps, even though I know that I am not.

My favorite drop bar might be the Velo-Orange Chris's Rando bar, which I
have on my touring bike. The ramps are quite long and comfortable.

Hope that helps! Have great weekend.

+1 for this sensible statement, and +1 for rack + pannier(s). Having used
many if not most of the saddlebags out there, as well as any number of
pannier types, I've always come back to rack + panniers for any serious
loading. If you need a rack for a bag anyway, panniers give you at once the
most volume and the greatest flexibility. Currently I have big ones --
Ortlieb Rollers -- and small ones -- Ortlieb Sports Packers -- and I can
mix and match as I wish, or forego altogether. And panniers carry the load
lower which, at least for loads of 30 lb and upward, makes the effect on
handling less, IME.

Even if a decent rack must be more or less permanently installed, panniers
(at least those with modern attachment hardware) go on and come off very
quickly and easily.

The Tubus Fly is cheapish, light (11 oz), and rated to 20kg.

All that said, I do have a nostalgia for the old fashioned English
saddlebags, just as I do for M-bars -- even though I find both impractical,
overall, for my needs.

Front bag is a great idea on a low-trail bike. My recent bike is without
low trail, used a 7-l Ostrich saddle bag (boxy 10 x 10 x 7) and it works
great with a Nitto R12 bag support - I think the same setup would work
nicely on a small frame for a rear bag. Raining today - maybe I can get a
photo later. If you like the Ostrich saddle bag, make sure you shop in

fenders are wonderful - we're having a wet spring, and bunches of

[RBW] Re: Fender Frustration

2015-04-25 Thread Marc Irwin
I switched my VO Zepplin fenders to the SKS Velo 29er
http://simplecycle-marc.blogspot.com/2013/08/err-towards-practical.html
fenders and have really liked them. They are super inexpensive and
normally slip on and off of a little metal tonque mounted on the fork and
rear bridge. I used zip ties on the Hunq because the Big Bens didn't allow
much clearance but you might like them. I got lucky and found a paint
color to match the Hunq's grey.

I also rapidly realized the front fenders’ stays are too long, the fork

fenders THAT much? Snow’s melting, mud’s forming, I’d be on the Hunqapillar

I did get my cognitive therapy for the week and I am smiling at the

[RBW] Re: Fender Frustration

2015-04-25 Thread Deacon Patrick
Thanks, Marc. I have no desire or temptation to fender the Hunqapillar. I
tried fenders with it's big knobbies and did not like it. It's the
Quickbeam or no fenders at all.

You're right, those fenders do look good on your Hunqa!

[RBW] Re: Bags for small bike owners (48cm Hunqs, 47cm Sams, Atlanti, etc.)

2015-04-25 Thread Will
Sometimes you have to accept geometry. It determines what works. In low
saddle cases, seat bags do not work and you should simply move to other
solutions.

I'd recommend a lightweight Tubus rack and an Ortlieb pannier. I am 5'6,
riding the biggest Riv I can fit, a 53 Atlantis. The rack and pannier I've
installed work great. I have huge capacity, great access to cargo contents,
immediate on-off bag convenience. I cannot imagine fooling with a saddle
bag. It would never be as convenient.

Mark's rack and the tombstone hit the saddle rails.

I've got a Brand V bar sack on there, but I need more space for day rides.
Any ideas? I'm really trying to avoid a rack as this is more of a trail
bike and I've got racks on my other bikes.

I wonder if I could have someone modify a Carradice Bagman to shorten it a
 little bit?

it's about 1/3 of the price from US suppliers.

 $40.00

Surly ECR 16 frameset w. a pair of Surly 120tpi 3 Knard tires and tubes.
What a great riding bike!!! Purchased frameset/tires new over a year ago.
$600.00 plus actual shipping. You can no longer order this frame online and
have it shipped. Surly changed their policy. So now you must purchase at
local bike shop. Which means tax!

I also have a wheelset, crankset, Jones bars etc. for the Surly ECR if
 interested.

If interested contact me off list for photos.
