Re: [RBW] Re: Bags for small bike owners (48cm Hunqs, 47cm Sams, Atlanti, etc.)
Late on the thread here, but I have a 46, 50, and 51 Riv's all with squeezy space for saddle bags. Carradice Barley can really tuck in there and hold a good amount. I've also found the marks mini to be really really adjustable and I bet one could angle it to fit its tombstone under the seat. +1 on a light Ti tubus rear rack. Pricey but barely noticeable. I think it's the fly. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Congratulations... however it comes out, I bet it will be great! Are you going to be using it for MTB-mixte action? That would be awesome, especially with the M-bars. Re: [RBW] Re: Bags for small bike owners (48cm Hunqs, 47cm Sams, Atlanti, etc.)
Well, chore loads can use other containers, too. But rack + panniers is a good choice precisely because it's flexible: 2500 ci, or nothing, or anything in between. For daytrips I can use a single small Packer Sport. That said, on bikes that aren't used regularly for bulky or heavy loads, I prefer to forego a rack and use the appropriately sized seat bag. As with the OP, I don't have clearance for even a small Carradice, so the Pika is a very good solution -- and of course there are others. [RBW] Re: Shimano Bar End Shifter Install Question
Can confirm with last two. Those ridges are in friction mode. The bumps are ridges within the shifting mechanism which help keep the shift lever in place while in friction mode. It has full range of motion and seems to shift up and down as needed. I guess that I was expecting it to be smooth for a lack of a better way to say it. Hey Drew, Selling without a wheelset is no fun, everyone wants to go away with a bike rolling. I agree putting a cheap wheelset on is a good investment if you're selling. [RBW] Re: FS Quickbeam 54cm
Almost everyone who was interested in this wanted just the frame and forks... so, Frame forks and headset for $600. If you want the wheelset, I'll sell that separately for $100 with the very worn jack brown blues. The S3X wheel is going for $150, even though it's brand new. It includes the cable and bar end shifter and other bits that came with it, but no cog. Thanks. I bought it new as a frame and fork, but it's pretty close to stock. It has a set of stock quickbeam wheels that I bought from someone who modified their quickbeam to 650b. It has a phil wood bottom bracket that was rebuilt at phil wood just before I installed it. At the moment it has an old no name saddle as Ive been working on recovering the brooks saddle that was on it. I could include the brooks if anyone is interested in a recovered saddle. The handlebar is an albatross bar that is flipped upside down and with about an inch cut off the ends. Nitto dirt drop stem. The seat post is decent, off an older 80's vintage trek. Pedals are shimano, the ones that are spd on one side and standard cage pedal on the other side. It has a rear rack and fenders (the back one has about 6 inches cut off, to facilitate wheel removal.) I've committed the sin of removing the decals as well. I'm taking it in tomorrow to get it tuned up and cleaned up a bit and I'll post more photos as soon as it gets back. It does have a few nicks in the paint, but nothing more than that. I'm thinking between $1000-1200 ish but I am open to offers. If no one is interested I'll probably list it on craigslist in a week or two. I live in San Francisco and I would prefer to sell to someone in the region, but I wouldn't completely rule out shipping for the right situation. Thanks PS: I also have an sturmey archer S3X wheel that is not on the bike. I honestly never used it or set it up, but I do have the bar end shifter, cable and other bits. The rim is a velocity dyad if that makes any difference. This could go with the bike, or perhaps be sold separately depending on interest. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Homer springeth green
Michael, Sorry for the delay. Didn't have time until today to take some measurements that would confirm my impressions. The comparison is hardly fair because of the difference in width: the Noodle is nominally 46 cm and measures about 45 cm C-C where the ramps meet the hoods; the GB Rando is nominally 42 cm and measures about 39 cm C-C at the same place. I prefer the narrower bars for shoulder and wrist comfort, and I much prefer the gentle upward curves in the ramps of the GB Rando bar. By contrast, on the Noodle and most other drop bars I often feel like I'm sliding forward on the ramps, even though I know that I am not. My favorite drop bar might be the Velo-Orange Chris's Rando bar, which I have on my touring bike. The ramps are quite long and comfortable. Hope that helps! On the Sweetpea, I just switched from a Tiagra to this one to this one: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/d11.htm Test ride around a bunch of blocks with hills and gravel went well. Friction, shifts cleanly. Sugino triple/Phil Wood bb. The Riv has the same Sugino triple with a Shimano-something bb, and is using a venerable old Deore LX (2001?) front derailleur. Re: [RBW] Re: Bags for small bike owners (48cm Hunqs, 47cm Sams, Atlanti, etc.)
+1 for this sensible statement, and +1 for rack + pannier(s). Having used many if not most of the saddlebags out there, as well as any number of pannier types, I've always come back to rack + panniers for any serious loading. If you need a rack for a bag anyway, panniers give you at once the most volume and the greatest flexibility. Currently I have big ones -- Ortlieb Rollers -- and small ones -- Ortlieb Sports Packers -- and I can mix and match as I wish, or forego altogether. And panniers carry the load lower which, at least for loads of 30 lb and upward, makes the effect on handling less, IME. Even if a decent rack must be more or less permanently installed, panniers (at least those with modern attachment hardware) go on and come off very quickly and easily. The Tubus Fly is cheapish, light (11 oz), and rated to 20kg. All that said, I do have a nostalgia for the old fashioned English saddlebags, just as I do for M-bars -- even though I find both impractical, overall, for my needs. Front bag is a great idea on a low-trail bike. My recent bike is without low trail, used a 7-l Ostrich saddle bag (boxy 10 x 10 x 7) and it works great with a Nitto R12 bag support - I think the same setup would work nicely on a small frame for a rear bag.
