[RBW] Re: Rain Gear
I use the breathable raincoat and pants from JG cyclewear (http://www.bicycleclothing.com/) . They keep me dry when cool to cold and rainy. I don't mess with rain gear in the warmer months. A big plug for the protection this gear has given me. I was hit hard in a hit-and-run incident earlier this year. All my clothes, including the rain gear, were cut off my body when the rescue team showed up. Though I had many broken bones, everyone in the know commented on my lack of nearly any road rash or skin abrasions. I give a lot of credit to the fabric that JG (USA made) uses. Brooks told me a sprung Cambium type saddle is planned for 2016. Interesting. With luck this means Brooks will also have an unsprung but wider, shorter Cambium for more upright riding. Anyone who has seen my blog know I have a lot of bike turnover, but here is the current stable: mine: - Velo Orange Camargue set up with Albastache bars, my main camping, utility, and family riding bike - '86 Raleigh Technium that I picked up on CL for $25, usually my fixed gear (though now a 6 speed) - '92 Specialized Stumpjumper, another CL find, I will probably sell it soon. - '13 Salsa Mukluk 29+/fat tire bike. I'm not sure about long term happiness with the wide bottom bracket - Twin Six/Waterford 29er, currently for sale, and it's replacement should be here this week wife's: - late 90s Trek 4300, from when they were still MUSA kid's: - 26 Giant Boulder for my 8 year old - 20 Trek Mystic for my 6 year old daughter - 20 Specialized Hotrock for my 6 year old son - 24 Specialized Hotrock, was my 8 year old's, now in waiting for the 6 year old - 2 trail-a-bikes, a Giant and Burley Picolo It's nice to have a three car garage... though my car sits in the driveway all summer to make room for the kids' bikes. Re: [RBW] Re: Rain Gear
I used the waxed cotton Carradice (not Brooks) rain cape for a summer monsoon season of commuting here in ABQ, NM and found it too heavy and hot. Perhaps the Brooks is lighter? I find that the cheap Campmore flaps more but isn't as hot. Social media thrives because I get to create myself. Here's an attempt to tell the bikey truth about me: 1994 Schwinn taiwanese cruiser, whitewall fatties, ss/coaster brake. From wife, first adult bike, last from Schwinn at a LBS. Commuted on it when gas hit $4. 2005 Specialized Sirrus. Liked commuting, thought I could do better. 1972 Schwinn Sports Tourer, lemon yellow, Rich wheels on original hubs. Cause I read some Grant, and Sheldon said so. Wanted it when I was a kid. Trapped in an ebay auction. 1990 MB-1 biggest frame, Manitou bumper fork. Dirt drop stem to accomodate my stiff neck and tight legs. Cause the 32mm Sirrus tires were a little small on rocky Brown County trails, and I couldn't afford a Bombadil, but this Petersen guy was in on it, I read his 1994 catalog, and wanted one. 2013 Hillborne 60cm cause I had the Rivbug and wanted into the virtual gang. 2015? Mystery bike cause I wanted notoriety in the virtual gang. So now I am a gang member, with a bunch of nice bikes! Which I enjoy. [RBW] Re: Rain Gear
Ventile is not completely 100 percent waterproof. It's also bulky , not exactly small packing if packable at all. So called waterproof *and* breathable fabrics only exist as relatives . A truly 100 percent waterproof fabric won't breathe , and a vapor permeable fabric by it's nature of being permeable cannot be 100 percent waterproof. So to me, all arguments for a given philosophy are flawed no matter how it's thought of . There just isn't a perfect fabric . And while someone may say it's perfect for me , they're really only settling for imperfection . True Perfection is infallible and Absolute. Not found in a material world , no matter all the man made inventions that have been are are to be . So what's the solution of all solutions , Absolute ? It's not found at all . . . . in fact inventions and searching only confirm a belief it is not already Present ! Yes . . . . Re: [RBW] Re: Rain Gear
Can anyone report on riding longer distances in rain wearing wool? I find that wool jerseys stretch even when worn dry: mine grow an inch or more in length after several hours of wearing. I wonder if a wool jersey ridden in the rain would act somewhat like a cotton T shirt in this regard? Me, after an initial impulse to abjure all synthetic jerseys, am glad I kept most of them, since now with afternoon humidity soaring into the 30s or more, and temperatures in the mid 90s, wool is icky (technical term of the art). So is plastic, but it's not as icky. (Icky factor of .73, with wool being 1.00.) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Fenders in Summer
Because … it’s … FUN! Let’s all go back into the past for a second or two … Didn’t anybody else here ever make believe they were the world’s fastest cyclist when you were a kid? I know *I* did. My friends and I used to put number plates on our Sting-Rays and make motorcycle noises while pedaling as hard as we could. It felt great. Have some of the people on this list forgotten those long ago, happy days? Now that we’re adults and have the money, we can indulge the child inside us and ride a bike that looks just like the one that the guy who won the Tor de France used. Sure, it’s not going to be able to carry a load of groceries home. Sure, it’s not “practical” in some senses of that word. Sure, it encourages you to ride in a “racing posture.” That’s the point! You’re a racer! You’re fast! You’re riding a cutting edge, carbon fiber bike! Whee! And where’s the harm in that? We all know that some bike shops oversell the latest carbon racing machines. But that’s where you have to give some credit to the guy or gal who’s buying the bike. There are lots of choices in bikes out there, and I don’t see anybody twisting arms to get riders on the latest Trek or Pinarello. For the same reasons, I don’t look at someone driving a two-seater sports car and wonder who snookered them into buying it. Is a Mazda Miata “practical”? Depends on how you define that, but probably not. But so what? It’s fun! (I should know, my wife has one.) There are all kinds of fun, including the kind that involves dressing up in lycra, swinging your leg over a carbon wonderbike, hitting the bike path, and believing in your own mind, for just a little while, that you’re leading the pack up the Alp d'Huez. RE: [RBW] What's in your garage?
Well, this is always a bit of an embarrassing exercise: lots of bikes, but mostly only one rider (except for the beach cruisers). Two garages, one at home in Delaware, one at beach house at the Jersey Shore. I have too many bikes, but always have trouble simplifying my files (I was duly impressed by Bill Lindsay's recent 5 bike purge!). Anyway, here goes. AT HOME IN DELAWARE: Fully rideable bikes (in order of acquisition): • 56 cm Bombadil, originally raw clearcoat with drops and 9 speed XT drivetrain, now repainted black and rebuilt (by me) with Rohloff drivetrain and Bullmoose bars. SON dynamo lighting all around, Pass and Stow and Tubus racks. A wonderful bike, but interestingly doesn't get much riding time. Most of my riding at home is on the road, so Homer or Quickbeam usually get the call. Here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/18223610733/in/dateposted-public/ • 60cm Quickbeam, custom maroon paint job from Riv. Purchased as a frame/fork special, built by Riv. Drop bars, Woody's fenders. Still my favorite bike. Here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/14449120190/in/album-72157645233707117/ • Custom A.N.T. truss bike, built by me (!) at a weeklong framebuilding course with Mike Flanagan in Massachusetts. Matte finish rust colored powdercoat. Built up as a fixed gear, with wooden rims, Paul Components parts, Rivet saddle, and Bosco bars. Really fun bike, and a source of pride for me as the only bike I had a hand in actually building the frame. Here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/8088486352/in/album-72157630285823166/ • 61cm Homer Hilsen. Built by Riv with Noodles and XT drivetrain, White industries hubs. Just installed a carved Cambium, which I love. This and the 'beam get most of my riding time. Here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/19721490691/in/dateposted-public/ • 61 cm Atlantis. This bike has been through a couple of iterations, but the basic build is still as it arrived from Rivendell. Custom Pewter paint job, Albatross bars, 9 speed. Dynamo lighting. This is a supremely comfortable bike, wonderful tourer, but somewhat duplicative of the Bombadil. I'm probably going to sell one of them. Make me an offer! Here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/11252425444/in/album-72157624427413755/ • '85(?) Stumpjumper. This bike was built around a cool wheelset that I bought from Jim Thill, Phil Wood rear and SON front, 48 spoke rear and 40 spoke front. Talk about a bombproof set of wheels! It has the Nitto racks with the removeable low-riders front and rear, and Bullmoose Bosco bars. It's completely redundant, given the Bomba and the Atlantis, but I like it and it gets ridden as a loaner from time to time – and a nice loaner it is. Here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/9785981285/in/album-72157635815847045/ • '85 Bridgestone MB-2 Resurrectio. Repainted and completely rebuilt as a sort of townie bike. 2 speed Sturmey Archer Kickback hub, laced to the original gold ano rim. Alba bars. The Paul Flatbed rack screwed up the handling, so it's gone. Brown Fat Franks. This bike is probably headed to the Shore as the engine for my 2 year old grandson's new Wee-Hoo! Trailer. Here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/6708095501/in/album-72157628383880621/ • Rivendell Mystery Bike (the proto-Appaloosa). Dark, SimpleOne-like green. I installed fenders, dynamo lighting, and a Tubus rack, but otherwise it's pretty much as received from Riv, with the Bosco Bullmoose bars that it was designed for. Hasn't been ridden much lately, but writing this makes me want to move it up in the rotation. Wonderful, absurdly comfortable bike, rides like a limo – an excellent handling limo. If Riv does bring these into production, believe the hype! Here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/8367710962/in/album-72157630957672582/ • Mid-'90s Trek hybrid, rebuilt for my wife with an 8 speed Shimano Nexus IGH. Albatross bars. Not ridden much. She rides all the time at the Shore, but uses one speed beater cruisers. • Gitane Tour de France, around 60cm. Tasteful purple color. Nice bike, never gets ridden. Bikes partially built, but not currently rideable: • '70s (?) Raleigh Competition, completely reimagined and modified by Peter Weigle as a low trail 650B randonneur. I'm in the middle of building the wheelset for this bike. It's a really stunning bike; should be finished in a week or two. Here it is as mocked up by Peter for sale: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/8432741668/in/datetaken/ • 59 cm SS coupled Saluki. Painted Bleriot blue. This bike has the nice Herse crankset, Paul Cantis and Noodles. Cambium saddle. This bike is basically done, but I need to tweak the fit. I'm retiring in a few months, and I envision this as my travel bike --- I hope it gets a lot of use! Here's

Oh, oh, oh! Photos, photos, photos please! Merlin, Hampsten, Ducati, Viking, Motobecane, Linskey, Eisentraut! Gordon too! Surprisingly retro looking compared to the rice rockets so popular among the young hereabouts; the local elderly bad boys and the dentist-types who want to look mean ride farting Harleys or such like. Anyway, I've toyed with the idea of a motorbike, non-rice, non-Harley (Harleys require flabby upper arms), thinking back to my teenagerhood in late '60s early '70s Nairobi where the cool guys rode old British iron -- a friend had a BSA 441 that we thought was the epitome of coolness, and my 135 lb guitar teacher bought an old dirt track racer, stripped Norton, that he could barely kick over. I agree with Jay. The deore hubs are awesome, slight weight penalty, very well sealed and spins pretty smooth. Not as bling as say CK hubs, but also don't need any special and expensive tools to service. I usually regrease mine once a year after winter. i won this on ebay last week. maybe i was bidding against some of you. made by duluth for rivendell. its bigger than i thought, and i cant really find a use for it on my current lineup, most of which have front baskets. its a nice bag. zippered big area, 2 buckle pockets face you, one flat exterior pocket. ideally, i'd like to trade for a carradice barley or small saddlesack in tan, or something similar like that. also, ill sell it for 95$ shipped, which is what i paid. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-13Yyyn6oFmI/VbkOPiXXf0I/AYo/VCeAGyYfspw/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2015-07-29%2Bat%2B10.15.30%2BAM.png https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JWdDEjkbeDg/VbkOXykUrUI/AYw/HGMKjEPLnXc/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2015-07-29%2Bat%2B10.14.23%2BAM.png https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wM3P7SUa0fE/VbkOhqeDw1I/AZA/R-WUWUriwZc/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2015-07-29%2Bat%2B10.14.53%2BAM.png https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5BVHr-53DJo/VbkOMYdxufI/AYg/6s7Vz6TbK7k/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2015-07-29%2Bat%2B10.14.35%2BAM.png -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: What's in your garage?
Tweaking this thread: I see most responders have quite large collections. My own ownership predilection is for a few and those just right; this based on a sort of perfectionist obsession that has led me into spending excessive amounts trying to perfect bikes that couldn't be perfected w/relation to my wants. So presently I'm happy with 4: gofast; all round errand and do everything road bike (fenders, racks, bags, lights); off road bike (a dirt road rather than a mountain bike); and a folder on the cheap. Garth, you are right: single layer ventile isn't waterproof. Double layer and Cotton Analogy layers ventile are waterproof. Yes, they are heavier/bulkier. Re: [RBW] Racer loves Rivendell
Nobody ever said that only MCRB's are available. I just said that only MCRB's are raced and glamorized, and that real world bike design could benefit from the same testing and glamour that MCRB's receive. I'm advocating race testing of practical, durable, and reliable bikes. Reliability would be race tested. That would provide useful information to the public. Wouldn't you be interested to know which fast bike could complete a long race with the fewest repairs and the most reliability? I might buy that bike. Keep BORAF and races like that if you want, but I would like to see many more real world races on real world bikes which would influence bicycle purchases in a POSITIVE rather than a negative manner. Current races glamorize super lightweight, super fragile bikes. Have equipment endurance racing events (or whatever you want to call them) and make the racers start and finish on the SAME bike, carry all their tools and spare parts, and make all their own in race repairs. This would glamorize USEFUL bikes and encourage bike makers to make useful bikes available to the public, instead of the ridiculously impractical bikes glamorized in most races. Who goes on their daily ride with a van with 3 spare bikes, spare parts, and a mechanic following? Why would you want to buy and ride a bike that requires that logistics trail? True, we all know about RBW and other such bikes on this list. But I bet that the average bike purchaser does NOT. Equipment Endurance type races on durable and repairable bikes would help educate the buying public and steer them onto a bike that would be much better for them than the typical MCRB. Again, the only race rules would be: (1) Start and finish on the same bike. (2) Carry all your own repair parts and tools. (3) Make all your own in race repairs. No other design rules would be necessary. Bike manufacturers would be encouraged to manufacture and advertise bikes that would be useful to the public. For warm weather rain riding, I'm almost at the point where I want to wear Keen waterproof sandals and just get wet everywhere else. Throw a shower cap on the Brooks and just change clothes when I get home. Though I will say that so far my Gore Tech shoe covers worked well on the last rain ride I was on. I also sweat too much under rainwear. The last poncho ride I took had my hands getting caught up in the poncho while moving hands around on the drops. Dangerous. After the 25? Mile ride I was soaked anyway, saddle wet too as I kept finding myself sitting on the tail of the poncho. So I am thinking Keen waterproof sandals, shower cap on Brooks. Wool clothes can be changed when I get home. Everyone else I saw riding that day was in regular clothes looking like they didn't mind the soaking. As for wet weather in the cold months, you'll have to ask a Randonneur. Yes but...does anyone commute in a car like that? How many people drive a car like that on the road? How many people train in a car like that outside of a race? Everyone recognizes that a car like that is fragile and maintenance intensive; completely impractical for normal use. [RBW] Re: Need advice for avoiding embarrassing Brooks saddle stain...
I've also had a few stains as mark describes. Almost like bleach spots from the copper rivets in a semicircle. Thought it was a kind of funny sign of how much I ride in certain shorts. Another interesting note from my experience, I have had a couple black brooks saddles that left marks after most rides in light pants. A few years ago I got a b17 select, which I have to say is a fantastic quality saddle. The undyed leather was supposed to prevent saddle stains and it did for a while, but over years of use its almost as dark as the brown brookses and will now leave stains on my light colored pants. Just from all the sweat and grime that's been rubbed into the saddle over the years. I've found riding with a saddle cover to be just fine in most circumstances. The only real difference I've noticed is its a little more difficult to slide around on the saddle, which is one of my favorite things about a brooks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Other than Riv, I mean. I would love to buy these SKS/ESGE Commuter II Fenders - B65 from Riv, but they are only offered in silver. I am not that fond of the silver, and would prefer black. Essentially, yes. The other reasons were that I wanted a jacket that could fold into its own pocket, and the POC was more of a club/road riding jacket, and got cool very quickly. [RBW] Re: Racer loves Rivendell
I'm another Riv rider who loves racing. I'm actually a co-organizer of the Canadian Cyclocross National Championships for the past two years, and also race the odd road race and (gasp) even a crit or two. Racing can be a LOT of fun. Not racing is super fun too. Point being, riding bikes rules, period. That said, I rode my (modestly racer-like, albeit fixed gear) gofast to Fat Tire Bicycles this afternoon to pick up a new (black, clamp on, 1 1/8) stem for the Fargo (new, longer reach bar) and a tandem rd cable (running the housing along the bar to exit with brake housing near stem). The young man at the register saw the '99 Joe and praised it and described the Legolas he races local cross on. He installed a straight bar because his background is downhill mtb racing, but he finds it much more comfortable than his CF cross bike, and says that it doesn't slow him down (he loses ground to roadies on the flats/straights, but gets ahead on twisties thanks to his mtb handling skills. [RBW] Re: What's in your garage?
Well, no garage at my house, but I have a basement stable. Here's what's in it, in order of age: 1971 Mercian Olympic 1972 Juenet 630 converted to 700C 3-speed IGH porteur 1982 Jack Taylor Tour of Britain 1984 Shogun 1500 converted to 650B porteur 2013 Rawland Stag 2014 Jeff Lyon L'Avecaise 2015 Bike Friday Haul-a-Day cargo bike I've actually reduced my N factor by two recently. Long-term aim is to have a stable of no more than 1/2 dozen keepers. I need to get rid of one more to get there. Which should it be? Ideally I'd like to replace my Jeunet and Shogun porteur conversions with one real purpose-built, custom porteur. That would get me to six total. Re: [RBW] WTB - bar-end shifters, 9 or 10 speed
Nashbar has brand new 10 speed Shimano bar-ends on sale for $55 USD. They ship to Canada, but I don't know the cost. I picked up two sets a couple weeks ago (they were $50 then). Personally, I'll use the right Shimano shifter for 10 speed indexed/friction, and a Silver bar end for the left. The Silver has a shorter lever throw for the same cable pull, so prefer them for shifting a triple crank. I don't like how I have to move the Shimano front shifter a full 90 degrees (which seems like it's past 90, due to the dog leg shape of Shimano bar end levers) to get to the big ring. With the Silver shifter, it's more like 60 degrees total. Re: [RBW] Re: Fenders in Summer
Formula 1 cars don't have fenders because the rules don't allow them. Sports cars (like the ones that race at Le Mans) have fenders and are way faster, because they are more aerodynamic... Shielding the wheels from the airstream actually makes you faster, which is why racing motorbikes have fenders. (Neither kickstands nor lights, though!) Seriously, Bicycle Quarterly tested fenders in the wind tunnel and found that the forward extension makes the bike more aerodynamic, the rearward one less, and the overall effect is zero.
