[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur for Riv Silver 34/24 cranks?

2020-09-12 Thread Joe Bernard
Oh, I missed an important data point. I'm using a 10-speed fd with a
9-speed chain, which is as much as you can fudge that. A 7/8-speed chain
would be way too wide.

[RBW] Re: Front Derailleur for Riv Silver 34/24 cranks?

2020-09-12 Thread dougP
Rivendell must have an answer. I recall hearing that the ideal gap from
the outer cage plate to the big ring should be 2 mm (1/8") but that may be
an ideal, not a hard'n'fast requirement.

On my Atlantis, I have a 24/34/44 triple & 11-36 9 speed with a Shimano
Deore (no other ID on it; nothing special) FD. With the FD clearing the
chainstay by a whisker, there's a good 1/4" gap from the outer cage to the
44 ring. So on the 34, the outer cage plate has to have a huge gap to the
34 chainring. I rarely use the 44, so it's pretty much 34 for 99% of the
time & I can get all 9 cogs without fussing. On the rare occasion I need
the 24, everything seems to work fine; no dropped chains or overshifting on
the upshift. All flat rings, no ramps'n'pins.

Re: [RBW] Ever get pulled over by police while on your bike?

2020-09-12 Thread Bill Schairer
I got pulled over with siren and lights in St Louis County while commuting
to work. I was riding on a frontage road that had a nice downhill ramp onto
a state highway (not freeway). The cop had somebody pulled over on the
shoulder of the ramp and I blew by pretty fast, for a bike, and must have
surprised him. Shortly thereafter I heard the siren and pulled over
expecting him to go by but he was pulling me over!? He claimed it was
illegal for me to be on that ramp (I can’t remember, it may have been
shared with a ramp off the freeway) which was nonsense - I rode it every
day. Anyway, he did not cite me.

[RBW] Re: Platform bike racks, again

2020-09-12 Thread Lucky
So far my number one choice is the 1UP. it looks like it grabs the front
wheel forward enough to not hit my front racks. The biggest front rack I
have is the Pelago rack. It's quite expensive but looks like a lifetime
piece of kit. Also seems to be sturdy enough to carry four heavier bikes,
that's my only concern on a rack like the Swagman, for example that has the
racheting hook that grabs the top tube, is that it can't hold the weight of
four heavy bikes. My 12 year old is riding a 22" mountain bike frame
already, so large bike are many years in my future.

I thought the North Shore looked cool but I don't think the "hooks around
the headtube" method will work with my basketed bikes.

That said, I'm interested in hearing others' experience.

[RBW] Front Derailleur for Riv Silver 34/24 cranks?

2020-09-12 Thread Justin Wyne
As much as I love the looks of this crankset, I feel like it should come
with a disclaimer of "good luck finding a front derailleur that'll work".
Does anyone else have this crankset, if so what front derailleur are you
using? The previous 2 I've tried can't get low enough to the big ring to
call it a safe distance before hitting the cage on the chainstay. Most
recent failure being the Shimano fdm618 low that although can be mounted
low enough, just cant seem to get properly adjusted enough to allow even a
millimeter of quiet non chain rub which requires constant trimming. I'm
running 2x7.

Re: [RBW] Baby Bosco Bars!

2020-09-12 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Mark - very clever. Ha!

Corwin - yes, he didn’t know how good he could have it - these bars are WAY
more ergonomic than his flat bars on his little Specialized.

Dorothy - thanks! I think they look pretty good. I worried maybe they would be
too narrow, but now they just look right.

This morning my son said, “Who wants to go on a Clem ride?” We went 4.5 miles
up and down the hills here and had a great time. The bike is admittedly a bit
big, but he is navigating that just fine. Still doesn’t want his
basket/bags/bells moved over yet. He’s afraid to take Killer Hill on the Clem.
Loyal to the old Specialized.

and fenders, and a older Bianchi 700c step through hybrid with fenders.
Other times I'll need to fit my 26" wheel All-rounder with fenders, Surly
Pugsley with fenders or my nice steel road bike on it.
Looking at various racks, many of them don't work with fenders.
The Saris MTR seems like it will work and they claim its fender compatible,
but in reading the reviews there seems to be some QC issues. and I don't
know if the racks and baskets will cause problems.

I use a 1UP USA 2″ Super Duty Double Rack and it works really well with my
Atlantis and Nitto 32F front rack/Wald 137 basket. You can increase the
capacity to up to 4 bikes.

[RBW] Ever get pulled over by police while on your bike?

2020-09-12 Thread Joel
I was out today riding one of my usual routes. I had just gotten back on
the bike (my Bleriot) after stopping to adjust the angle of my Albatross
bars. I was pedaling and all of a sudden out of my mirror I saw some lights
flashing and I pulled over. I got off the bike as a very young officer
walked over to me. I asked him if I had done something wrong, maybe riding
to fast (yeah I know being a wiseass is not really a good things). He asked
me if I had just come from a street which was one I was actually heading
towards.. I told him no and explained where I had ridden. It seems some guy
asked a lady for directions, there mush have been more to it, he was on a
bike, and I fit the description I was told. I was wearing a short sleeve
gray sweat shirts as it was an unusually chilly day today and a Rivendell
cycling cap from years ago. Another officer arrived smiling, he was the
officer in charge. I put up my hands and said it wasn't me and he started
to laugh. He explained to me they were looking for a guy in a gray members
only jacket and a baseball cap with dark hair, my hair is silver/white.

We talked for a few minutes, they apologized and I said no need. I went
back on my ride and now was on that street wondering if a woman would come
out of her house chasing me.

In a way I had a good laugh but I wonder what this guy did to make this
woman call the police. This was not my town but 2 towns away in CT while I
live in MA. So something was up.

So I wonder if any of you have ever been pulled over on your bike?

Joel

Hi all, I'm hoping to do a two night camping trip the weekend after next with a
friend, on my Cheviot, leaving from NYC... Originally thought Harriman night
one, Fahenstock night two, and home, but just wondering if there's a more
interesting itinerary, either one way with the train home or round trip. I
think we have 60 mile days in us, give or take.

2020-09-12 Thread Litho
Thank you for the suggestions, everyone.

I sold the bike this morning from my initial Craigslist posting. I wasn't
expecting it to move that quickly based on past experience. The person I
ended up selling it to turned out to be a friend from high school who I
hadn't talked to almost thirty years. We sent several emails back and
forth through Craigslist before we realized we knew each other. The Bay
Area is like a small town, I swear.

[RBW] Re: Platform bike racks, again

2020-09-12 Thread Jason Fuller
This is what I have (well - I have the two bike version, but same idea) and
it works great because you can adjust each bike side to side as needed to
avoid interferences, and the wheels just sit in the hoops and the hook
cinches down on the top tube - and it works on step thru bikes too (used
with a dutch style bike, no issues). So no problem for baskets, fenders,
and the like.

>From an engineering perspective, I was meh on the new canti brake design,
to be honest. The arms are hollowed in the direction that reduces
stiffness during braking forces, and the fact the allen end is blocked by
the canti arm would probably annoy me in use. Not that it's a bad looking
brake but there's plenty of great canti brakes out there already at the
full range of price points!

Seems way more useful to put energy into a nice, classy but unique v-brake
IMO! But Grant's gonna be Grant and I love that about him.

[RBW] Platform bike racks, again

2020-09-12 Thread Lucky
I've read a few of the conversations about best platform rack for hitch,
but to be honest, my head is spinning! Just when I think I have narrowed
down what to get, I run into another issue with the rack for one reason or
another.

SO, who is using *which* platform rear rack for bikes with front racks and
baskets? I was just about to buy the Thule rack and then it occurred to me
that the hook over the wheel might not work with my bikes, all but my son's
have a front rack and basket.

The One Up looks nice?

I need to carry four bikes on the back as I can no longer lift them to the
rooftop. And don't want to scratch up my nice Riv and Riv-adjacents.

Thanks for any advice!

they will much better appreciate when they find a good fit.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rear derailleur to shift 10-speed close-ratio cassette with Bar Cons

2020-09-12 Thread Bill Schairer
Patrick,

I was running a 9sp 12-25 cassette with a Suntour Superbe Pro short cage
and a 46/38/28 with down tube shifters and the derailleur is well named.
To my amazement I could run the entire cassette on each chainring with
only the slightest sag small/small though in practice I don’t do that.
This appears to be way outside spec.

I then swapped wheels and crank and am now running a 14-28 7 sp freewheel
with a 50/45/26 crank. It does not like the 26/28 combo and doesn’t wrap
enough chain in general on the 26t ring but is rideable. I will probably
swap out the 26 for a 28 or a 30.

I am super pleased with the Superbe. Though I haven’t ridden it with 10sp
or barcons I have no reason to believe it wouldn’t be wonderful with both.
Since mounting it only recently I read on Disraeli Gears that some
consider this derailleur to be the best shifting friction derailleur of all
time. I don’t have nearly enough experience to make such a claim myself
but can well imagine it might be true.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Simpleone (58 cm) with Rohloff Speedhub

2020-09-12 Thread Steve Cole

I am selling my wonderful RBW Simpleone that Cycle Monkey converted for me
from a single speed bicycle to a Rohloff Speedhub driven bike with 14
spaced separated gears. I had seen that Cycle Monkey had made a similar
conversion for another Simpleone owner. Since I first learned of Rohloff,
I was fascinated by the Speedhub. It’s truly a marvel of German
engineering: https://www.rohloff.de/en/. I knew that world tourers
commonly ride bikes with Speedhubs because they are bullet-proof. I had
always had as a cycling goal to ride the Great Allegheny Passage/C Canal
paths for years, which seemed like a perfect reason to convert my
Simpleone. I did, I rode, I had an amazing time, I never looked back.

I’m probably not going on another long tour again soon, if ever. The
GAP/C were about 350 miles and it took me a year and a half to
prepare. Day rides and S24Os are now my main cycling pleasures so I’m
offering up my Rohloff Simpleone.

Here’s a Rivendell Blug link about the Simpleone:

I've got drop bar sized Paul thumby mounts that fit the 26.0 bar

shifters I want to free up. I've got some friction options though...

[RBW] Re: Tech question about shifter and brake cables and WTB

2020-09-12 Thread Ben Mihovk
Hey! I'm not an expert at all, but I did successfully swap out bars and
change out a trigger index shifter for a friction thumbie this summer. My
answer would be that yes, it would be a good idea to get new cables and
housings for the drop setup. The incidentals kits that Riv sells are great,
btw. Could I have reused the shifter cable? Maybe...the issue, though, is
that even a VERY clean snip of a cable could have a frayed wire...a frayed
wire will not pass through a housing when it comes time to set up the
brakes and shifters. I actually REALLY screwed up with my first attempt
(wrong cable pass under the BB) and had already snipped and capped the end
of the derailer cable)...so I had to pull it back out and redo it...capping
the cable caused it to fray a little, so I I trimmed it again to get a
clean cut, crossed my fingers and held my breath, and re-routed the cable
through the shifter, front end housing, and through the derailer housing
and it thankfully worked.

The bigger issue is he might need more cable in a drops setup than in his
current setup...and that calls for a new cable.

I'm rambling...but I just think it's better to have a fresh cable that will
definitely be long enough.

[RBW] Tech question about shifter and brake cables and WTB

2020-09-12 Thread Mark Taintor
In the vein of there are no stupid questions: My son recently bought a new
Handsome Cycles Devil and is thinking about switching from flat to drop
bars. He's wondering if he'll need new brake and shifter cables. I told
him that I thought he'd probably need new cables for both since he'll be
switching to new brake levers and a new rear shifter. But I don't really
know.(It's an 8-speed bike.)

In the Wanting to Buy department, does anyone have a surplus pair of
shifters suitable for drop bars? Also, looking for bar end shifters.

My son lives in Brooklyn, so if any of you are somewhat local to him, that
would be ideal.

[RBW] Be still my beating heart, a new 8 speed group.

2020-09-12 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles

Apologies if this is old news, we've been a bit occupied up here in
Rochester.

Aside from the color and compatibility (understandable), I'm super happy to
have a low-cost, clutch option, alternative-to-Shimano 8 speed group

https://www.microshift.com/en/introducing-acolyte/

$88 gets you a shifter derailleur and cassette. Paired with the right
crank and you're capable of everything but loaded touring and pedaling
downhill.

[RBW] Re: WTT: Bags & rack, grid-grey for olive. (Possibly WTB/FS)

2020-09-12 Thread iamkeith
Update:

Sold the grid-grey bags as a set, so I guess I'll just wait until Riv
re-stocks and buy new olive ones.

I still have the Campee front rack if anybody needs one or has a Mark's
rack to trade. Both are nice but, if your bike fits the Campee, it's
really the nicer choice: Fewer parts, less clutter, more custom looking,
lighter, and (the main reason for having one) it includes a threaded boss
for stabilizing the cantilevered part of a front fender! The recent thing
with Nitto and Riv recommending straps because of a spate of broken ones
was not because of a design failure. I have another one of these that's
20 years old and still going strong, and gave a second one away with the
Clem that was fine too. It's just because dumb hipsters were loading them
with 12-packs and going camping on rough trails!

While I'm at it, I might as well add the following rear rack WTT that I
*also* just discovered that I'd need for the Susie:

HAVE: Nitto R-14 rear rack that Riv used to sell. It has a tall tombstone
and the front hardware attachments are the the flat in front type. This
one works best if your upper braze-ons are at the height of the rack (ie.:
above the tire/fender). Otherwise the struts need to be bent - but that's
the way most were installed.

NEED: Nitto RBW-51 front/rear replacement that Riv now sells. (Tiny
tombstone, front hardware mounts to side.)
