[RBW] Re: WTB small Atlantis or Appaloosa

2022-12-29 Thread G.E.
Hey... Not sure if you're still looking at buying a Riv, but I have a 2010
Hillborne in 48cm size (orange) that I'm getting ready to sell. It's a full
build, so it would have all the parts, unless someone has the parts they
want, in which case I will consider just selling the frameset. Let me know
if you have interest, but hopefully, you've already found what you were
looking for. :)

[RBW] Re: Crash Inspection Advice

2021-02-03 Thread G.E.
First and foremost, I am glad that you have come through surgery okay. What
a terrifying, anger-inducing incident!

I don't understand what is going on in the world... I don't think this is
an issue specific to your locale, but rather seems to be something so many
are experiencing across the US. It's unfortunate that these young people
found it acceptable to behave in such an obviously intimidating and
destructive manner. The fact that others experienced similar issues the
same days speaks volumes to their intent and I do hope that there will be
restitution for you (and perhaps even others who seem to have been
assaulted as well).

I think others have well-described the parts/pieces to have checked and it
seems as though you've found a shop to help you, but I think like others
here, I am just in shock at the way people will behave (and it was learned
somewhere, which means there are others, older perhaps, who behave in a
similar manner).

Be well... and I hope you are able to get back to riding very soon.

[RBW] Re: ISO Homer Hilsen size 46

2019-06-25 Thread G.E.
G.E. here! :-) The Saluki sold really quickly, and I'm not sure if I still
have the contact info. His name was Eric, I remember that much, and he
seemed really happy with the bike (he did send a follow up note, as I
recall, just to let me know that he was enjoying it), so I'm not sure that
he would be willing to sell it but, I suppose one never knows.

Good luck with your hunt. The smaller Riv's can be tough to find
secondhand, but they do pop up now and again if you keep your eyes open.
The Saluki was a lovely bike, but it was too much of a duplicate for my
bike fold, which is why I ended up selling it.

[RBW] Re: Almost FS: Riv Hubbuhubbuh (HHH) tandem, size small

2019-05-20 Thread G.E.
Last night, we attempted to get as many photos taken of the HHH as it will
be sold before our rain started (again), so I must apologize if they seem a
bit haphazard, but hopefully, we were able to capture as many areas as
possible to get a clear idea of this tandem. The photos can be found here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032207@N04/albums/72157708525351885

Additionally, I should point out that the fenders are not currently on the
tandem. They are Velo Orange fenders (they are these
<https://velo-orange.com/collections/650b-fenders/products/vo-polished-52mm-zeppelin-fenders-650b>)

and my wonderful hubby was running short on time and wasn't able to put
them on the bike prior to photos (plus, he figured that they'd likely need
to come off again for shipping purposes, regardless). If anyone needs/wants
a photo of them, I'm happy to get that, so just let me know. Otherwise, the
bike is pictured as it will be sold.

Just one more note, I had stated that there is an approx. 1 in scratch
across the top tube, but I also noticed some "hazing" from a couple of bags
that have been placed on the bike. They are REALLY difficult to get a photo
of, but you can get an idea in the one photo that has the red arrow
pointing to a spot. There are actually two of these: one is just under the
stoker handlebars from a bag we were using there and the other is in the
triangle between the captain's seat tube and the bottom tube running back
to the stoker area (again, there was a bag placed in this area). The paint
is still good in these areas, but it may have rubbed some of the clear
which has created the hazing.

Thanks again to all!

Max,

I'm glad to see we're not the only ones who find this to be a fun tandem.
:-) I wish it fit us a bit better (the curse of being shorter people,
unfortunately), though we understand that most duos would not both be under
5'4".

Hope you continue to enjoy your HHH!

2019-05-19 Thread G.E.
Patrick,

I am a rambler (both in writing and sometimes in everyday life too). :-) I
try to keep this bad habit in check, but it's not always possible. My
grandmother was an English teacher and used to send me back the letters I'd
sent to her with all of the punctuation and grammar corrections -- I still
don't get many things right, even several decades later! ha ha

I am not a professional writer; though, like you, I used to help others
with their resumes (I was a recruiter and HR manager for several years). I
still assist others on occasion even today, but it's generally just to help
out a friend (or a friend of a friend). I do enjoy writing when I can and
when I was in high school one of my dream occupations was to be a travel
writer. My mother told me I didn't have enough life experience to write, so
I wrote in journals and kept my thoughts for myself (sadly, I lost most of
those journals many years ago). I do have the great privilege of being able
to work as an artist today, which was also a life-long dream. I find a lot
of connections between writing and creating forms (I work with clay and
occasionally paint), even though these two areas don't necessarily seem
similar on the surface.

I am grateful that you saw clarity in my words because (as stated above) I
tend to ramble and sometimes worry that my point isn't clear. Maybe grandma
helped more than I believe! :-)

The tandem is in Colorado. We've assumed it will likely need to be shipped
as finding a local buyer is (probably) unlikely.

[RBW] Almost FS: Riv Hubbuhubbuh (HHH) tandem, size small

2019-05-19 Thread G.E.
My husband and I bought a HHH (Hubbuhubbuh) tandem from Rivendell to try
out our interest in riding a tandem. Neither of us had ridden one prior,
but it seemed like it would be a good, stable option to try out this
new-for-us way to ride. I was fairly certain that we probably wouldn't take
to it, or at best would ride it infrequently, but as it turned out, we
really enjoyed riding together this way. Shortly after purchasing the HHH,
we knew that the bike was too big for us so we looked into having a custom
tandem made. Our intention was to keep both and use them for different
purposes, but the reality is that the HHH doesn't suit the style of riding
we primarily do on the tandem and in truth it is too big for either of us
to captain comfortably. I was hesitant to let go of the HHH because it took
us awhile to get the custom tandem dialed in but now that we've been riding
that one for a year and have found a comfortable place with it, we both
have realized that the Hubbuh just isn't suited to our needs/height/leg
length/etc. While it is super fun and easy to ride, it's getting difficult
to store two tandems and it's time to look at letting this go.

Although the HHH is not officially for sale as of yet (thus, no photos
quite yet), we are preparing to put it up and wanted to place info here
first so that anyone who may have interest can be on the look out or ask
any questions they may have. Here are some details, and of course, feel
free to ask any questions here or DM me.

- Size Small Hubbuhubbuh (it's the darker blue, kind of slate blue color,
not sage or orange)

- 650b wheels (purchased from Rivendell as part of the tandem package)

- Schwalbe Marathon 650x42 tires (these will probably need to be replaced
in the relatively near future, but they've sure been darn tough! Never had
a flat - knock on wood). We put these narrower-than-intended tires on it
due to height/standover issues, but it will take a much wider tire (I
believe up to 60mm) for a normal-height person. For reference purposes, the
captain is apprx. 5'3.75" with a 76 PBH (can JUST straddle the top tube -
barely - in the captain position) and stoker is 5'1" with a 69 PBH (has no
problems at all standing over rear top tube)

- One set of Albatross bars and one set of Bosco bars

-The drivetrain is set up as was recommended by Riv, and has 3x9 bar-ends;
we did switch out the cog on the crank to a 50t (rather than the 46t that
came on it) because we were spinning out often; however, we can include the
46t ring with the sale so the future owner will have the option to go back
to the smaller ring, if needed/wanted. So, at the moment it's running
50-36-26 (or it may be a 24, I need to double check). The cassette is
11-32.

- Cranks are both 170mm, purchased from Riv.

- Ours was set up so that the disc (intended to be used as the drag brake)
is used as the rear brake and a v-brake is used in the front. This could be
fairly easily changed out if the new owner desires, but this is the current
set up and how it will be sold.

- The tandem *will not* be sold with any racks, bags, baskets, etc.

- It *will* come with fenders, two bottle cages, double kickstand, pedals
and saddles. The pedals and saddles are nothing to write home about... they
are extras that we have, not Brooks or leather saddles, nor anything fancy
in the pedal department... it will simply make it easier for the new owner
to have something to ride the bike and not have to immediately purchase
something.

- There is a scratch across the top tube in the captain position from the
mirror on the handlebar running across it once when the bike was unsettled
after stopping. The scratch has not gone through the primer, but is visible
(I'd say it's about an inch long, running perpendicular to the direction of
the top tube). Additionally, we only have one headbadge as the second was
crushed in shipment (I believe these can still be ordered from Riv, but am
not certain).

In short, we have thoroughly enjoyed this bike, but it's time for us to let
it move on to someone who can utilize it. I've attached a photo from one of
our rides over the winter, just to give some idea of what the bike looks
like, but it will have some different parts than are pictured here (most of
which have been indicated above). We haven't settled on a selling price,
but I'm thinking it will be somewhere in the neighborhood of $2500.
Shipping is going to be the biggest expense and P.I.T.A., but we'll get it
figured out (likely in two boxes with wheels in one and the frame in
another). I will do my best to get this posted with photos for anyone who
has interest and will likely just add a reply in this post so as to not
clutter up anyone's feed too much. :-)

2019-05-05 Thread G.E.
This is just a "for what it may be worth" comment...

I purchased a NOS Saluki from Riv in 2017 and because it was unpainted they
told me I could have it decaled/headbadged with either Saluki or AHH info -
my choice. Sooo... I'm thinking they may have Saluki headbadges around
somewhere that they'd be willing to sell.

[RBW] Re: Winter wool baselayer rec needed

2018-11-11 Thread G.E.
I have been a big fan of Ibex for a number of years. As stated by another,
they are no longer in business, however, you can often find lightly used
(or sometimes, even new) items on eBay. This time of year, I have at least
1 piece of Ibex on my body on any given day. Their pieces have lasted
several years for me. I also have Smartwool pieces, and although they tend
to be a little softer, Ibex still wins for me. I've also bought from Minus
33 (I have some leggings from them that I've owned for two winters and
they're still in good shape, having worn them nearly every day for about
3-4 months out of the year). There are other brands, like Voormi you could
look to (though I've never purchased from them, so I'm just putting it out
there as a suggestion to try) or Woolx.
>
>
As far as which weight to get, that (at least to me) can be very personal.
I have lightweight wool and midweight and tend to wear pieces alone and
layered, depending on the conditions and temperatures for the day. Today,
it's in the low 20s F here and it's snowing, so I'll be wearing multiple
layers outside to keep warm, with a jacket over the top. I have found that
the lighter weight pieces tend to get holes quicker, especially if they are
pieces I'm harder on.

I sweat quite a bit in my wool when engaged in activities and if I hang it
up and let the wool air out, I can wear the pieces multiple times before
washing them. My husband, however, washes his pieces nearly every time he
wears them, so perhaps this is just personal preference or amount of sweat
produced by individual bodies. As has been pointed out, the wool will feel
different though after wearing it.

2018-11-08 Thread G.E.
I had a bar-end, 11-speed, friction shifting set up for a time and it
wasn't bad. I ended up not keeping the bike (not because of the shifting,
but due to overlap with other bikes), but I'd do it again on a bike, if it
made sense for the set up Though, I frankly think the 2x10 was just as
good, so not sure that extra really did much for me. But, I also think my
3x9 works well too! :)

Besides posting the HHH here, you might try putting up a post on tandem
classifieds or the tandem club
classifieds (if you
haven't already). Just a thought... you'll probably get more of a response
here, but you never know.

Re: [RBW] HHH Run?

2018-10-22 Thread G.E.
My PBH is just shy of 77cm (just under 30in) and there is absolutely no
extra room for stand over... I even lean the tandem a bit when stopped to
keep me comfortable (and that's with 42mm tires). It only works because we
both dismount at stops. It's truly too large for someone of my height and
PBH, but it hasn't been a problem with starts or stops to date. The biggest
issue is really when riding distance because it's just such a stretch.
Ideally (for me anyway), the captain position would be smaller, but we've
made it work. :)

[RBW] Re: HHH Run?

2018-10-22 Thread G.E.
I am just under 5'4" and ride as captain on a small HHH with my stoker
being 5'1". It is definitely a stretch (and the standover is VERY close -
for me, not the stoker) and I wish that there'd been an "extra small" size.
I was kind of hoping with another possible run there would be an
announcement of a smaller size, but I know that most bike manufacturers say
smaller sizes just don't sell. :( It's a definite bummer for those of us
who need them though.

That said, we have about 1500 miles on our HHH, so we do ride it a fairly
significant amount. Can't seem to get over that 55 mile mark on a single
ride though because the stretch really is a bit much. Still, so much fun to
ride!

[RBW] FS: 47cm Rivendell Roadini

2018-10-17 Thread G.E.
After purchasing a Rivendell Roadini, I quickly realized that it is a
near-duplicate of another bike I own. Since I've been clearing things out
and trying to get to a reasonable number of bikes, this one is on the
chopping block.

Here are the quick stats, for anyone who may be interested:

47cm Rivendell Roadini frame/fork
Pacenti Brevet 650B wheelset
Continental 650Bx32 tires
Bar-end shifters, 3x9 drivetrain with Sugino 170 crank
Tektro mid-reach brake calipers; Origin 8 brake levers
Ultegra front derailleur
Deore rear derailleur

Frame/fork and wheels have less than 100 miles.

Photos can be seen
here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032207@N04/albums/72157702339545464

Asking $1100 for the full build (minus pedals, saddle and bottle cage) +
$100 for continental US shipping.

Thanks! :)

Re: [RBW] Re: 650b narrow tires

2018-10-03 Thread G.E.
So, yes, it's a small road bike that happens to have 650b wheels. I have
had 650c wheels as well on another bike... and there aren't a ton of
options there either. It's almost the opposite problem though. One can find
narrower 650c tires, but finding wider ones becomes more of a challenge. My
initial question was really more out of curiosity... an "if I should ever"
type of wondering. The 32mm ones work fine, but I know when I'd looked it
was about the narrowest available, so was curious if anyone had tried
something narrower on a 650b wheelset.

[RBW] 650b narrow tires

2018-10-02 Thread G.E.
I realize this is a strange thing to be asking (particularly here, since
most are riding wider tires), and normally I'd be looking for the widest
possible tire to fit on a bike myself, but I'm curious if anyone has seen
and/or used a 650b tire that is 30mm or narrower? I've seen a couple of
options in a 32mm, but am specifically hunting for something narrower than
that. Though it's unlikely to exist, I thought perhaps someone may have run
across a tire of this sort.

Thanks in advance!

[RBW] FS: Winter Built Box Dog Bikes Pelican

2018-10-02 Thread G.E.
I have acquired too many of the same sort of bicycle (I don't know if
that's really possible, but I'm running out of space, so I'm going with
it), and am selling my 48cm Box Dog Bikes Pelican frame/fork. Box Dog no
longer makes this size, so for a smaller rider who has wants this frame,
this may be the opportunity. Link to photos are here
 (geo
chart included in photo link as well).

I bought this to be my longer-distance rider and it's been a sweet little
bike, but as stated above, I've acquired several of the same type of bike
and I have to start clearing some things out. It doesn't have a ton of
miles on it (less than 500 miles) and it's never been crashed. There are no
dents, gouges, etc on the frame. There are some wear spots (to be expected
with use - see photos), but overall it's a very clean frame/fork.

The sale will include the frame, fork, Velo Orange Grand Cru headset and
the downtube cable stops. The current price on these Pelican frames is
$2,000. Price for this one is $1200 (+ shipping costs through Bike Flights
-- probably around $50-60, depending on where the buyer is in the U.S.).

Happy to answer any questions here or via Direct Message. Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Roadini - How do you like yours?

2018-09-24 Thread G.E.
I actually believe the Roadini is a better fit for me, but I've also grown
used to the slightly-large fit of the Sam, so perhaps my body now believe a
larger bike is the "right" fit. :) I still like the Roadini... it just
doesn't do exactly what I'd expected. I'm sure there would be a far more
significant difference in feel from some of the more stout Riv's to the
Roadini.

[RBW] Re: Roadini - How do you like yours?

2018-09-23 Thread G.E.
I am very much able to identify with your situation, but my experience with
the Roadini thus far hasn't been exactly what I'd hoped for. I have owned a
Sam Hillborne for the last 9-10 years and was looking at the Roadini to be
a more stripped down, faster road ride. Unfortunately, I haven't found my
speeds on the Roadini to be faster than that of my loaded up Sam H (I'm
actually faster on the Sam). I've been doing a lot of tests between the two
recently because I've been frustrated that I'm not getting what I'd hoped
out of the Roadini. It's upsetting because so many others have had such
great experiences, so I'm not sure how to come to terms with my experience,
nor how to resolve the lack of speed. The Roadini is certainly comfortable
(as is the Sam), but I'm somewhat regretting spending the money on a "road"
bike when it hasn't resolved what I'd hoped it would.

[RBW] Re: Problem with Roadinis?

2018-09-23 Thread G.E.
Just thought I'd throw in my experience, for what it may be worth.

I currently own a Roadini (non-orange) and have owned a Soma ES in the past
(also had a Riv-made-for-Soma San Marcos). I am a vertically challenged
rider, so my experience may not be the same as someone who rides a more
standard size; however, comparing the 47cm Roadini to the 46 (now 48) cm
ES, the Roadini fits me better, but I both felt and physically was faster
on the ES - significantly faster (averaging 3-5mph faster on 20-40 mile
rides). The Soma geometry seems to not be quite right for me so that my
body sits in a rather odd position with pedals too far behind me. The
Roadini is more comfortable, which in theory allows the body to handle
longer distances, but the slower speeds leave me frustrated on many rides.

My ES was actually set up with "worse" parts than the Roadini (the ES was
equipped with Sora level components while the Roadini is built with
Ultegra), but the ES was a speedier ride, even with the lower level
components. So, depending on what I was looking for, and assuming that
Soma's geometry works for the rider, I wouldn't necessarily be against
purchasing a Soma. Though with that said, I wouldn't reject the Riv either
as others that I've heard from haven't had the same experience I've had and
sometimes comfort is more important to the rider than the speedometer. :)

[RBW] Re: New Bike Syndrome

2018-01-15 Thread G.E.
In many ways, I envy those who are capable of being a one-bike person;
however, as many have already stated, you may well regret giving up your
Sam for the Atlantis, unless the riding you do always necessitates the
carrying capacity of the Atlantis. I've had my Sam for about 8 years and
cannot imagine giving it up, but for me it is the do-almost-anything bike.
That said, I also had another Rivendell (and other bikes too) that I sold
to help fund bike purchases and have often regretted it. The problem is
that you will likely lose a great amount in a sale and when the regret sets
in and time passes (causing even more increase in the cost to buy again) it
becomes that much more difficult to replace the bike.

Now, for full disclosure, I am the female in our household and we both ride
so it's not difficult for either of us to convince the other that we *need*
a second (or third, fourth, etc) bike. So, I understand if your sig other
is not on board necessarily with having two bikes, but perhaps as others
have stated you could explain to her that each bike does serve a purpose
and find another way to help fund the new Atlantis. Even if it means
waiting a little longer to fully build it up, I think it might be worth it.
Of course, I have no idea your personal or financial situation, but if
there's any way to keep both (since it sounds like you do enjoy the Sam), I
would try that avenue first.

Waiting for a new bike can feel like torture. Whether it's a couple of
weeks or several months (or even years, as some have waited), the waiting
is the hardest part. At least it provides time to pick out the parts you
think will work best! :)

[RBW] Re: Hubbuhubbuh with drop bars?

2018-01-15 Thread G.E.
My husband and I own a Hubbuhubbuh tandem, but you and I are quite
different as far as height is concerned. However, I'll offer our experience
anyway, just in case it will be beneficial to you or anyone else. Keep in
mind, we've only been riding it since October '17, so it's still a fairly
new experience for us (though we have about 400 miles on it thus far -
which is substantial for us, considering we really only get to ride one day
a week and had a few snow weeks when we couldn't really ride).

All that said, I captain the tandem and am not quite 5'4". We have a size
small and it is really nearly too big for me to be able to ride up front.
There is no way I'd be able to captain with drop bars because of the size
issue. The headtube is very tall which, unless you are tall, as in your
case, causes the HHH to be naturally pretty upright. This isn't necessarily
a bad quality, but for me personally, because the bike is large for me it
causes some other issues (but I won't get into that now). As with any Riv,
I think you *could* set it up with drop bars, if that is how you're
comfortable. Just know that you will likely be sitting more upright than
perhaps you would on another bike (probably not as much as I sit upright,
but I'd still guess the position will be fairly so regardless). A longer
stem would probably help and also be useful in combating the squirrely-ness
I experience on the front because of the ridiculously short handlebar stem
I have to use.

Just for added, non-requested fodder, we do really enjoy the HHH!! In fact,
we took it on a group ride recently (it was a casual ride, with speeds not
exceeding about 16mph, unless we were headed downhill) and enjoyed
ourselves. This tandem is obviously not intended for such things, but we
wanted to see if we could slightly push its limits. This is our first
tandem experience, though we've both ridden bikes for many years so it's
been interesting to experience the power of two on one bike. We live in a
hilly (well, mountainous, really) region and average between 13.5-15.5mph
on most rides when we cover between 30-50 miles. Speed isn't really the
goal with this sort of tandem, but I thought I'd throw it out there as
sometimes that information can be helpful.

I hope you and your partner will very much enjoy the HHH too! :)

[RBW] Re: Boulder Tips

2017-08-16 Thread G.E.
I live just north of Boulder and there honestly aren't any bad trails. We
here get to live in an incredibly beautiful place. This time of year, there
are a lot of people out on trails (both on foot and bike) so it's
challenging to find quiet trails, especially if you want to hike in or at
the base of the mountains.

Boulder Canyon is very popular, but has a nice paved route that you can
start from down in Boulder from Canyon Dr and it connects with the Boulder
Creek Path too. This one is usually quite busy, especially on weekends or
super sunny days. Chautauqua Trail is another one many enjoy. If you're
looking for something a little lengthier, Green Mountain is a nice hike as
well. If you're interested in traveling a little north of Boulder to Lyons,
Hall Ranch and Heil Valley are a bit removed from the chaos of Boulder, but
honestly still pretty busy most days. Keep in mind that a lot of the trails
connect with other trails, so if you go to the Boulder County website, you
can get a map of where trails exist, what you can do at each trail (hike,
bike, dogs, etc) and where they connect. You can also go to All Trails, and
people have rated a lot of the hikes/trails in the area, so it may help you
make a decision about which one is right for you. I don't know if you've
visited prior, but some people are surprised by the amount and size of
rocks in the mountains and on the trails (Umm... hello, it is the Rocky
Mountains), so depending on the trails you choose, be prepared to contend
with rocks of various amount and size. Lower land trails usually aren't
packed with rocks, but if you head up, just be aware. I share this only
because I'm a mega klutz and have twisted ankles when not paying attention
to my surroundings.

As has been stated, if you intend to rent a bike, University Bikes is a
great option... plus, the store is just fun to go in and poke around with
lots of fun stuff to see.

As for food, we don't eat at many restaurants in Boulder, but if you like
pizza, I think everyone should have Beau Jo's at least once. :)

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Saluki 47cm

2017-08-15 Thread G.E.
Up for sale is my 47cm Rivendell Saluki. It is being sold as
frame/fork/headset/bb/cable stop-guides only.

The frame was purchased new and directly from Rivendell earlier this year
as a new-old-stock item and painted at that time. Since then, it was built
up and ridden fewer than 100 miles. Due to the build, there are some
scratches/blemishes to be found on the frame that have been circled in the
photos. One is on the underside of the top tube and is small, but visible,
and there are also a few blemishes/paint indentations on the chainstays due
to chain slap and the former attachment of a kickstand. I also noticed
while taking photos that there is a smaller, approximately 1in section on
the seat tube that seems to have some sort of hazy substance on it. This is
also circled in one of the photos.

The frame takes cantilever brakes and 650b wheels (not included).

It's a fantastic (and beautiful) bike, but is a duplicate for me and I need
to make room for and help fund a project that is coming my way soon. $1450
(shipping not included, but available within the continental US with buyer
covering actual costs). Photos can be seen here:
https://flic.kr/s/aHsm1hi6AG. If you have questions or interest, feel free
to PM me. Thanks! :)

[RBW] Re: Advice for selling a Saluki/Hilsen?

2017-08-10 Thread G.E.
*John*: I was going to say that I believe the PBH was 73-74, rather than
63-64 as Bill pointed out, but yes, it's definitely going to be for a
smaller stature individual, most likely female.

*Joe*: I think you're likely correct. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a JB paint
job, as I'm sure I would've paid for that! :)

*Blakcloud*: Thank you! I wish my other Rivendell was this color because I
really do love it. Thanks for your suggestions and price thoughts as well.
I actually have a set of drop bars I was considering mounting instead of
the albatross bars, which would make the brake levers less clunky looking
(and yes, I do understand what you're saying about this and agree). The
cork grips tore in removal, so I'd have to get another set of grips (which
wouldn't be a huge deal), so it's a matter of deciding which way to go with
that.

You all continue to be helpful, so thank you!

Re: [RBW] Re: Advice for selling a Saluki/Hilsen?

2017-08-09 Thread G.E.
Joe: I can run it with drop bars and I'm almost 5'4". Of course, I have a
fairly short stem on it too. I have proportions more like a guy though...
meaning even though I'm not horribly tall, I have shorter legs and a longer
torso. I decided to put the albatross on it because I was using it more
for transportation around town. I will definitely take measurements of the
bike before it gets posted.

Doug: I don't think it was a Joe Bell paint job (pretty sure), but I'll
double check for the sticker. Thank you for that reminder!

Steve: That is awesome! Thank you for posting the geo chart.

[RBW] Re: Advice for selling a Saluki/Hilsen?

2017-08-09 Thread G.E.
You all are fantastic! I didn't expect to have so many responses so
quickly. I really appreciate all of your feedback. Many, many thanks to you
all.

As for more details... It is a small frame, so I am aware that there
doesn't seem to be quite the market for those sizes (47cm to be exact). The
frame was a NOS that Rivendell was selling early this year and it was
custom painted so it's a different color than the standard blue Homer
Hilsens or the orange Salukis. I believe that it was actually old Saluki
stock, but when Rivendell was selling it, they said it was the same as the
Homer Hilsen, so I could choose either set of stickers. I think it's a
beautiful color... but of course, I chose it. :) Anyway, as for parts, it
has the Sugino triple (I think it's the 24-36-46, but I'd have to double
check to be sure... the bottom might be a 26). It has albatross handlebars
with Dura-Ace bar end shifters. I'm fairly certain this one is set up with
the 8sp shifters because we had them in a box of parts (again, I'd have to
double check to make certain it wasn't 9 sp). The wheels are nothing
special - just a standard 650b set (I'll have to look to get specifics). It
has Soma New Xpress cream tires with Stop2 Flats liners inside.

I'm located in Colorado, so I'm also aware that there isn't the same market
here as there is in northern CA.

As for photos... I haven't removed everything yet that won't go with it
(what will come off is the saddle, pedals, bag, basket, rack), but some
pics taken in the wild can be seen
here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032207@N04/albums/72157684414421915

[RBW] Advice for selling a Saluki/Hilsen?

2017-08-08 Thread G.E.
I'm in need of some assistance and am hoping some of you here might have
thoughts and be able to offer suggestions. I purchased a NOS Saluki/Hilsen
from Riv at the beginning of the year and built it up. It's been ridden,
but not much (it's a second Riv for me). My husband and I agreed that we
would each sell a bicycle in order to make space and help fund the purchase
of a tandem we can ride together. Unfortunately for me, this is the only
bike I can really see letting go of in the current bunch since it functions
mostly as a duplicate as far as purpose in the bike fold goes.

Anyway... long story short, I need some help in regard to a selling price.
Obviously, I can calculate out the cost of what I paid for the frame/fork
and all the parts, but I'm looking for realistic numbers for a (mostly)
whole bike. I don't intend to sell the saddle, pedals, or any carrying
stuff like bags, baskets, racks, but otherwise it has fenders and all the
parts necessary for riding. I don't want to be unrealistic about a price,
but if you have thoughts on what these are typically going for these days,
I would appreciate your feedback. Additionally, if you have thoughts on a
good place(s) to try to list it, that would be helpful too. I'm trying to
avoid eBay if I can help it.

Thanks so much in advance for your thoughts.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborn

2017-03-13 Thread G.E. of EVL
Late to the party... however, I just wanted to say that I've had my Sam for
7 years now and can't imagine not having it. It's been set up with drop
bars and albatross bars. It's had racks and bags galore, and I've had it
stripped down to ride a bit faster. It handles well both while carrying
items and riding it more as a road bike (it's not quite capable of racing
speeds - but that was never its intention). The size I have is no longer
made (so, hopefully, nothing every happens to it!), and it has 650b wheels
because it was a small size. As a female, I have struggled a bit with the
long top tube (Initially, I had an 8cm stem that was too long and ended up
with a 5cm stem in order to make it ride-able comfortably for me, but the
super short stem comes with its own kinks). I guess my bit of advice might
be to test ride, if you can, first. Since Riv sizes by PBH, sometimes (in
my opinion) a person can end up on a larger frame than s/he really wants or
is comfortable riding. I've put thousands of miles on my Sam though, so
obviously, it's hard for me to find too many negatives. I'll put it this
way, of my current bicycles, if I was forced to have just one bike, the Sam
H would be the one I'd keep.

Good luck to you in your search for a retirement bicycle! I would
definitely consider the Sam Hillborne as a possibility.
