[RBW] Re: Honjos

2012-06-14 Thread Manuel Acosta
I can attest to the installation of honjo fenders. It's similar to
wrestling a wool sweater on an alligator. While it's sounds impossible it
really is. The bike looks good. The dents and scratches will add character
to the fenders.

another set of 650B fenders. I went ahead and tried my luck at Jitensha

hand that would be suitable for my Hilsen, so I went for it. I've picked
at it for the last couple of days and finally have the installation

my opinion about the best VALUE in fenders has changed. But I can say that
I appreciate all metal fenders and the quality of workmanship that has gone
into Honjos. Furthermore, I can say that I think my Hilsen looks pretty

look this nicely for years to come.

[RBW] Rivendell Rally Bay Area Edition Ride Recap

2012-06-11 Thread Manuel Acosta

 Fun day.
Grant's book signing at the Warming Hut was greeted by amazing weather and
amazing bikes with amazing people. Glad I got to drag Grant along on this
trip. It's kinda hard to plan a ride like this for people I don't know. So
I figured I would just do a ride and if people wanted to follow that would
be great. I already knew I didn't want to ride Tam that day. Despite the
nice weather along the coast I knew riding more inland it would get
uncomfortable or even down right miserable. At any point no ride should be
like that. Unless you want it to be. And for this nice day with these great
people it didn't seem like it was really necessary to go on a epic river
crossing ride. (not like there is any epic river crossing around San
Francisco) or dry dirt hill climbing. Opt for a tourist route of seeing the
best of San Francisco. Riding over the bridgeinto Marin Headlands By some
beachUp some hill with bunkers back over the bridge. Most of the route
was kinda made up on the spot. Thanks for everyone that followed me (err
dealt with my lack of route making skills). After we got over the bridge
some people branched off to do their own thing including Grant himself.
Kinda made me nervous about him getting back to Bart when he asked the
question, I can get to Bart by going this way right? I'm pretty sure he
made it to Bart. The ride continued passed the bridge pass Robin William's
house pass the Legion of Honor down some stairs pass Ocean's Beach
into Golden Gate Park. Here the ride finished with Ice cream in the park.

 the replacement yesterday!).

I have a 64cm Sam, which I love. I decided I wanted to add another bike,
and figured i'd either get a big QB, or a Hunqapillar (and then make the
Sam a little lighter for using around Burlington, which I would have done
with the QB). Found a great deal on the list for the Hunq, and decided to
 go that route.

I'll be adding a mini front rack/platrack/slickersack combination to the
front, and putting the supernova lights on the Hunq. I moved the large
saddlesack off the sam, added a big baggins to the back of that bike, and a
nitto front rack and basket to the front of the Sam.

I am running Marathon Supreme 50's on the Hunq, and Jack Brown Greens on
the Sam (I used to have Dureme 40's on the Sam, but thought i might want to
have a little zippier tire on the Sam now that i have the big dogs on the
 Hunq).

So now I have a Sam which I have set up with drop bars and a bit lighter,
and a Hunq for trail riding and camping.

I am loving it so far!

 Fun stuff.

Looks like the probably of two ride it is.
Morning ride to Fred's for french toast.

Afternoon ride after the book signing.

As much as I would love to do both. I feel like some quality time with the
lady friend is much needed. So might be out for the morning ride. More
likely be able to do the afternoon ride after the book signing.

I propose a mixed trail route in Rivendellish fashion over the bridge up
Mt.Tam via climbing Rail Road Grade to the West
Point Inn, descent to Panoramic Hwy on Old Stage coach, ride Panoramic Hwy
to the Miwok trail head, ride the headlands back to Conzelman and then down
to the Bridge. I did this ride with some of the SF Randonneurs a couple
weeks back. Route can be found here. I pretty sure the route sheet is the
one I described.

http://bike.duque.net/assets/files/SF-Mixedterrain-101.pdf

Let me know what everyone thinks. We can cut the ride shorter or make it
longer. Or changed all together.

[RBW] Good day of riding.

2012-06-05 Thread Manuel Acosta
I find myself incredibly lucky and fortunate to be able to do rides this
far and this long. I have very supportive love ones and I'm lucky enough
that I have the time to do these rides. I find out more about myself every
time I do rides like these. For this Populaire I learned that it was okay
to ride for yourself. As social as cycling if you have to get somewhere you
have to get there under your own power(unless your riding on a tandem).
The start of this ride turned out to almost the same as the last populaire.
Cold, a chance of rain with a hint of fog rolling over the bridge. Great
group of people these SF Randonneurs got to meet a handful of them from
previous rides and a few from the Rivendell forum. Adam and Adam was there
participating in their first rando event. Rob was there to greet everyone
who was eager to warm up because they were freezing their booties off.
Luckly the fog burnt off and the rest of the ride was just about perfect.
Got to share the ride with Carlos and talked to him about touring. He's a
lucky man to have a love one who does these types of events with him. She
was working the finish control for that day. After the first control I got
the ride with Esteban who portrays a typical Randonneur. Wool Jersey,
awesome beard, self-fulfilling look of tiredness. Curious about how many
Rando events I have to do to get a beard like his.
Not like it matters to anyone else but me but I got to finish the ride 10
minutes earlier then the last Populaire. I'm particularly proud of this
because I rode my road bike on the last populaire. Goes to show you that
the bike doesn't matter.
Felt good so decided to take the family out riding. Since I needed to stop
by RivHQ I decided to take them riding around Shell Ridge. A quick stop by
the shop never is quick when you end up chatting it up with everyone. Harry
showed me his new hat (for the life of me I forget where he got it from)
which was previously pink but turned to this awesome cream. I even got to
ride Harry's Brompton which rides normally despite being a tiny folding
bike.
Off on Shell Ridge the family had a great time. My father wanted to see
what these Rivendell bike's were all about so I urged him to ride it. He
seems natural on the bike and the learns how to ride with bar-ends in less
then two minutes. My father being a very reserved person approves silently
with huge grin coming down the hills of Shell Ridge. Not bad of a day to go
riding.

around the Bay Area... Perhaps multiple days, kinda like the Best of
the Best... That would be some event, and one that would likely draw
 riders from around the country.

 Peace,

Excellent photos. Glad to have finally met you in person, both at the

 was
another adventure, but I bailed out before the last serious gravel
 climb of
the day. All told, the trip was 80 plus miles with about 20 or so on
gravel roads. And six water crossings. In fact, the Red Wing,
Minnesota water crossing today was up about 6 inches from yesterday.
 Only
time I got my feet wet.

The part Ted rode with us was on multiple back roads in Wisconsin,
 with
lots of climbing. We scaled the bluffs twice. And were rewarded by
 two
amazing downhills. One at high speed, the other, not so fast, but
 perfect
road conditions and essentially no auto traffic. Could have been
 better.
Saturday night the group that was left stayed in Wabasha, Minnesota,
 either
camping or at a hotel. Had a late start this morning, and immediately
began climbing for about 4 miles. Not the most difficult grade, but
persistent. Figured it couldn't have been that steep as I didn't use
the small chainring today while on Saturday my Sam Hillborne used all
 of
the 21 gears available. The views from the road was fantastic and the
descent into Lake City, MN was exciting to say the least. Topped out
 at
37mph which is the fastest the SH has done with a camping load. After
 a
stop, wound up on another country road that turned to gravel, and then
 back
to pavement. After a bit of decisionmaking near Frontenac, decided I
 would
ride back to Red Wing by way of Highway 61. A decent paved road, but
 with
heavy traffic on a weekend. The rest of the group ended up heading
 over to
Hill Ave to climb another bluff on a gravel road with a pretty serious
descent. (Have done the road in the past and didn't feel up to it
 today.)

Highlights of my ride back included seeing a number of deer, including
 one
doe and fawn at the corner where Hill Ave. dumps back onto 61. We
 also saw
an immature bald eage with a fish fly directly above us in Lake City.
  Was
also great to meet a few other folks and just have a great bike riding
   weekend.

ending this was the last thing that crossed my mind. But I digress,
Mr.Grant PetersEn is book signing/reading near the Warming Hut under the
Golden Gate Bridge. The signing/reading starts around 1pm. I'm opened for
anything S240 SaturdaySunday, bike ride before or after? We can't have all
the MidWest coast guys have all the fun! Lets hope we can get a good turn
out since this is a hop and skip from Rivendell HQ.

[RBW] Re: Sackville Saddlebag Support

2012-06-03 Thread Manuel Acosta
I highly suggest a rack, if your planning any outdoor trip. The carradice
quick release is great but the actual support starts to wiggle after a
couple bumpy rides. The hupe I hear good things only if you plan on packing
light with the bag. Anything heavy and the hupe cuts into your frame.

[RBW] Sf Randonneurs Mixed Trail Ride.

2012-05-29 Thread Manuel Acosta
Rode with the San Francisco Randonneurs on a mixed trail ride over the
Golden Gate Bridge.
Route Golden Gate Bridge Reverse Paradise Loop Railroad Grade West
Point Inn Milwok Trail Coastal Trail Pizza.

The Sam rode well on road, rode better on dirt. No big surprised. The big
tires nor the fenders made a difference when trying to keep up with the
pace. Fun group this SF Randonneurs. Nothing but smiles on this great
looking ride. Some notable things that happened; Having ride leader Carlos
show me the secret Bike Emergency station near the halfway point of
Railroad Grade, checking out the party and beautiful live music at the top
of West Point Inn, almost crashing on another fellow randonneur coming down
Mt.Tam (he's fine btw), using blue cloth handlebar tape to tape up another
randonneur's hand because her bandages was coming off, and eating pizza at
a pretty decent place near the Presidio. Great day to be out on the bike
Big thanks to Carlos for setting this up.

[RBW] Thank you

2012-05-19 Thread Manuel Acosta
Nothing beats New Bike Day. Rode the new bike to work. It was funny because
my student's seem more excited about the bike then I am. LIke any new
shiny thing with wheels, all the kids wanted to ride it. I'm not good at
describing the feel of a new steel bike so I'll quote some of the things
the kids say. So smooth, The pedals are smart, This bike feels so
right! was the general conversation after students took turns riding it
around the school. So since school got out early I took the long way home.
Decided to see if there was a way to bike from Ed Levin to Mission Peak.
There is but not an easy way. The maiden bike voyage turned into a maiden
hike the bike uphills. But the new bike got dirty so all was well.

It's kind of hard to describe how guilt ridden I felt having to receive
such a nice gift. Call it my stubbornness to accept help or my pride of
having to try and deal with my mistakes on my own. Having gotten to talk to
a bunch of people on the forum in person they really helped me understand
that it's okay to accept other people's help. Grant put in better words
Everybody who helps you will be getting more out of it than they're
giving, so you can legitimately think of this as a gift the givers are
giving to themselves. It's interesting to note that despite how amazing
this gesture is that the lovely folks at Rivendell HQ didn't make a huge
deal about it. Which made me feel a lot more comfortable about accepting
the bike, since it was done a month ago. (alas I don't check my voice
messages) It was funny because of how awkward I felt during the last few
months about the bike I didn't really have the courage to ask about the
progress or if it was even done. I figured when the bike was ready and the
time was right it would be done.
This bike is more meaningful to me knowing that so many people were willing
to contribute in so many ways. It's hard to even express a really thank you
over a simple forum, so I'll just do it through pictures.

Because pictures proved how grateful I am.

[RBW] S240 Ride Report- Diablo/TOC 2012

2012-05-16 Thread Manuel Acosta
It's kind of hard to write up a ride recap when Anne and Bill did such a
beautiful job. I'll do what I can not to be redundant.

Like all good trips or experiences it always starts with
some challenging event. Like what I tell my students when they
start complaining about running the mile, If it's not hard then it won't
be fun. Well if the trip started with a sidewall flat then I knew this was
going to be fun. I got to borrow my brother's bike the
famous accordion honjo fendered bike for the trip, jury-rigged my platrack
sackville bag to fit his soma porteur rack ( which fit without much
trouble) and hanged most of the things that I didn't fit outside of the
rack. Like how Bill describe it the rear exploded with such fury that I
thought the trip was going to be over before it started. But low and behold
things happen for a reason and Bill gave a call to Rivendell. Super Grant
was there to help save the day. Wrestling on the tire and getting pumped up
only to find out that the tire was rubbing on the fender I figured I would
have to deal with it for today so I ride off, when I hear Grant yelling at
me, Come back Manny I have a better solution for you. I come back and
he's pulling out a 48cm Hunqapillar display bike out from the shop for me
to borrow. Horrid that I had to put Grant out, I figured this was going
happen whether or not I was going to like it or not. It's weird because
getting a loaner bike from Rivendell would be a dream from some people. I
felt like a horrible person that I had to had to trouble Grant
to accommodate my mistake. But I digress, more on this later. So after some
basket fitting, we're off riding up Diablo with gorgeous views of the sun
setting in the over Walnut Creek. We get to the campsite almost in the dark
meeting up with Dustin and Anne. We sent up our tents and get ready for
dinner. Food is good and plentiful with our butter cooked veggies and
bacon-wrapped hotdogs. We sleep well until we hear some near by neighbor
practicing his karate at 2am in the morning (he was shooing off raccoons I
was told). I wake up to find Bill and Anne making coffee and Bill ready to
go to work. Before he did he took the summit; nothing like starting your
day climbing a mountain before work! Around 8ish we all got up and rode to
the summit for some good morning ice cream sandwiches at the summit vistor
center. This is were Anne took her leave and bit us adue as she ride back
to San Jose. We rode down pass the ranger station to scope out a spot to
take pictures of the race. Dustin pick a great shaded area 200m before the
KOM.
It's funny how riding a mountain and waiting a couple of hours to watch
other people ride the same mountain for 10 seconds can bring such a crowd.
The atmosphere before the ride was quite interesting. It became more of a
mini party deck out with free ice cream and people dressing in
ludicrous costumes dressed as cats, witches, raccoons, Zorro and even
(gasp) Lycra! I'm one to talk as I was at the race dressed in my SF
Randonneur's (wool) Jersey. We spend our time waiting for the riders by
eating. Dustin was nice of enough to share his lunch of cheese and salami.
I had rope from my hammock so I decided string up a chair to wait on. Got
to meet with a people who stopped by and said hi. Mike who was suppose to
meet us up at Juniper but decided(smartly) to sleep near the ranger station
because they rode up wall point prior. Grant and former Rivendell employee
Peter even stopped by and hung out as we all waited for the racers to make
their way up the mountain. After the 10 second flash of 18 pound bikes
the descent down Diablo was amazingly hectic with so many riders. We make
our way back to Rivendell said our good byes to Dustin, dropped off the
loaner bike at the shop and we jumped on bart.
I find it amazing that this trip was made possible through just
simple communication of time and place on this forum. With very actually
conversations with real people. Oh the wonders of the interweb. It also was
interesting to note that despite the many differences and many routes of
how we got to our main destination we were brought together for good times,
good food, amazing people and great bikes. Another awesome trip. Already
looking forward to the next one.

[RBW] Re: s240 up diablo?

2012-05-11 Thread Manuel Acosta
So right now the to place where were meeting is up in the air. I guess it
all depends on where you what to ride from. The north gate of diablo or the
south gate.
If we ride the north gate we can meet up around 530ish at Walnut Creek Bart.
If we ride the SOUTH gate we can meet up around 530ish at Dubin Bart.
Either ride should be good. I'm more partial to the south gate mostly
because I've never ridden up it. But it doesn't really matter to me. Just
as long as I get to sleep outside.
Any thoughts?

More details in the mixed.Made campsite reservation at juniper for eight
people.
Convinced two of buddies to roll out so far we have three.
Planning on leaving later monday afternoon around 530ish due to work.
Depending on how long it takes us we'll be there right when the sun will go
down.
Bring dinner, breakfast and snacks for the afternoon, Expect to share if
you want.
Tuesday we'll ride over by the south gate to snag some pictures of the
race. afterwords maybe lunch somewhere.
Might even ride over to rivendell to snag a few things before barting home.

Like most trips if I plan out a route it's most likely not going to be
followed.
So for those wondering if the mileage is too much. Don't worry it's not. I
think. I'm pretty sure it not. We'll take plenty of breaks.

[RBW] Grant's Book Tour Adventures!

2012-05-07 Thread Manuel Acosta
It was funny because I was just thinking about how his book touring was
going and pop there goes a new blug. Looks like he's having a grand old
time. His new book is good btw. Things that you get after years of
experience from riding a bike all in one book. Lots of interesting things.
If your an avid cycling or even a new to cycling this book would be good to
read. Chapters are set up in a way where if you don't want to read certain
sections you don't have to. Skip em and read them later. Being a fairly new
cyclist I'm just finally branching out to different subgroups of cycling.
I'm coming to realizations about cycling that were already written in the
book. Not only is the book a good reconfirmation on things that I do while
biking that I always felt uncomfortable about but it's helping me getting
over certain aspects of my riding now that will save me some grief in the
long run. Makes me feel better about Just Riding. (--This was intentional)
Also the drawings in the book a swanky. Anyone know the artist?

Jim sorry about the crash. The human body is an amazing thing. Despite the
stresses that we put ourselves through the body can recover from the worse.
Having not had personal experience with anyone with a broken hip. I'm
pretty sure that you'll be back on the bike in no time. In regards to the
bike, if you were riding a Homer, the bike is most likely okay. Granted in
the bike build by Rivendell and everyone know those things are made with

I'm finishing up day 2 after surgery and am doing well and feeling
fine. Other than the hip, just a touch of road rash and a bruise from where
my shoulder hit the door. This was a case where wearing the helmet

[RBW] Re: SF Randonneurs Populaire this Saturday

2012-04-02 Thread Manuel Acosta
Cycling is one of the only sports that I know where you don't get
gratification of what you've done until you're finished. So true in the
sport of Randonneuring. If I had to sum up the Last weekend's even in one
word it was wet. So wet in fact that out of the 70ish people that
registered for this ride only 40ish actually came out. That means 30ish
people stayed inside because they were smart enough that 50 mph winds and
heavy downpours is not ideal bike riding weather. Gladly I met a handful of
people on the forum, Stephen and Bill. At least I wasn't the only dumb one
trying to ride in the weather Despite all the rain it was a fairly warm 60
degrees out there. Warm enough that I figured rain pants wouldn't be needed
until the first control. Oh how wrong I was. Lucky enough I had Mr.William
to show me the ropes of what to do with the brevet card, receipts and
controls. Once the rain started coming down it didn't really stop. Figured
the rain pants were useless to put on at that point so they stayed in the
jersey pocket. Overall I had a great time mostly due to the company I got
to ride with. I find it interesting that it only takes one ride to really
get to know someone. Having never met Bill in person before I love how with
just 71 miles of riding in the rain you can find out so much about someone.
We exchanged stories, Bill told me a couple of Filippino jokes, talked
about life stuff and made fun of the weather yelling At least there isn't
any lightning! secretly hoping that our statement wouldn't be ironic.
There's always a point in any hard ride where you get one of those WTF
moments. My WTF moments was trying following Bill through dirt section of
Samuel P Taylor park. At this point the rain was coming down so hard that
mini streams were washing along the trail and the wind was blowing so hard
that it felt someone was consistently slaping me in the face, and the dirt
getting kicked up from my non-fendered bike was getting on the inside of my
clothes. My only goal was trying to keep my bike upright and keeping up
with Bill. My only thought at the point of the ride was that I wish I was
riding a bike with fenders right now. Like any true ride you only get the
best of the weather when you're done with the ride. We finish at Chrissy
Field with the SF Randonneur volunteurs hosting the post ride picnic
complete with coffee and goldfish crackers! Big thanks to Bill who had to
deal with me. It was a pleasure to ride despite the weather. I can see why
people like doing events like these in good weather.

[RBW] SF Randonneurs Populaire this Saturday

2012-03-29 Thread Manuel Acosta
Having been inspired by many people on the forum to ride a Randonneur
event, I'm planning to ride the populaire this Saturday. Anyone else
going? Any advice for someone who hasn't ridden a Randonneur event
before? I'm still kinda worried about the control cards and what not.
More importantly what do I wear? Hopefully I can tag along with
someone who knows what their doing.

and i decided to go for a ride next thing i know is that i feel good
and decide to go for longer. I ended up doing Mt.Hamilton in a dark
decent... There was still snow in the summit and all i had was a tank
and t-shirt over it. No beanie no full finger gloves no jacket
nothing! It was dark and i was half was down the decent. Have you guys
head of albino killers in that county?? Well i have and i was cared
out of my mind! Never doing that again! Plus i get home and i get in
trouble.

These kids now a days, I wonder where they get these outragest ideas.
BTW I'll be riding my non-fender college road bike. Look for me in
splats and rain jacket. Stephen and William I'll see you there. 71
miles in the rain sounds fun.

liquid food, and a spare wool top, bottom, hat, and gloves.  The only thing
I used were the extra gloves as my original winter gloves were soaked

[RBW] Experience is the best Teacher

2012-03-19 Thread Manuel Acosta
They say experience is the teacher of all things. For those that are
local and are lucky enough to ride up Mt.Diablo ya'll now how it was
riding up Mt.Diablo for the first time. After the ranger station you
get one of those What the hell am I doing? moments.
Being a teacher I have the unique opportunity to share my experiences
with my students. Most of the time I share my cycling experience
unwillingly. Most of my students dread to hear another adventure of
Mr.Acosta. But some of them actually listen and are willing to go
along with me to some of these adventures. One of my former students,
Jesus, a fairly talented and strong sprinter wanted to ride the three
ridable mountains of the bay area. Having conquered Mt. Hamilton at
his leisure he wanted to try his hand at climbing Mt.Diablo. Being the
word of reason I told him just let me know I'm down to take him
whenever.
Being the sickest that I've been the whole year he calls me asking if
Diablo is okay to ride this weekend. Not really sure if the weather
was going to hold up or if I was even able to make it up the mountain,
I do that right thing and tell him lets do it.
Not having a ride to the closest bart Jesus wakes up early and rides
the 20ish miles to bart prior to riding Mt.Diablo. Being in Walnut
Creek nothing really tops a ride up Mt.Diablo then with a short pre-
ride trip to Rivendell HQ. Got to see boxer Elizabeth and her new
Bruise-Blue Hillborne. Also got to meet Sean who was getting his last
parts for his birthday Hillborne he wanted to finish that day. The
ride itself was typical. Cold, windy, hard with a little bit of snow
frost at the top. My only reprieve for almost coughing my lungs out at
the top of the foggy and windy top is that Jesus got to experience
this for himself. After another short stop at RivHQ (forgot to pick up
Eben Weiss' new book), foam saddle pack by Vince and a little bit of
camera dueling with Harry, it was a short bart ride back to Fremont.
Jesus being young and crazy decides to ride back to San Jose despite
just climbing over 4000+ feet of elevation. Now the kid wants to ride
up Mt.Tam. This kid might kill me.

[RBW] My ride report ( Really long post)

2012-03-06 Thread Manuel Acosta
Riding to NAHBS had a new meaning when I found out that MASHsf was
hosting a fixed gear time trial race to NAHBS starting at Pitsburg/Bay
Point Bart. Not wanting to carry a backpack the whole way there I
decided to join in on the race figuring I can just tag along with the
group to Sacramento. A meet a group of nice guys who just recently met
up to race so I decide to offer my services to pull their team to
NAHBS. Little did I know that 30 minutes into the race I get a flat.
Thing is about alley cat races no one is there to provide car support.
I pull off and try to desperately change the flat to stay in the race.
After getting the flat fixed 15 minutes later I flat again. With no
spare tubes I had to walk a mile to the nearest bike shop to get some
tubes. I get to the shop and I find out that the shop isn't open for
another 30 minutes. I finally got back on the road after losing an
hour to catch up with the race. Lost, my only source of directions is
the cue sheet I hastily printed out, only after riding a couple of
hours do I realize that the cue sheet is printed backwards. Starting
at my destination and ending at the Bart station. Not very helpful.
But I continue to ride on with the only hints of me going the correct
direction are lost water bottles on the side of the road. I finally
catch up the one lone fixed rider that same guy I was suppose to
support before I got my flat. My only break for that day is that this
one lone rider used to live in Sacramento so he knew where he was
going. So I do the right thing and I take the pull to Sacarmento. We
get there late with only a hour for the show so we scramble to try to
find someone to open up the sag van to get my stuff, while in the
process of getting my bag I run into Marc, Mr.OwlBoogie himself with
his handmade XO-1 hoodie. After a quick camera duel I finally get my
stuff back and with no time to check out the show I huff it back to
Davis to stay with my brother. Which turned out to be a good thing and
bad thing. Good because I got a free place to stay with brother who
knosw where to get a great hamburger. Bad because I got to deal with
the college scene debacle, where his roommates decide to go bar
hopping late into the night and provide a rude and aburpt awaking at 3
in the morning. I wake up early to get ready for the Mimosa Ride with
Sheila Moon prior to going to show I'm surprised to see random people
sleeping in his living room. I silently and quickly take my leave. At
the ride I got to meet plenty of interesting people, I'm horrible with
names but it was great riding with so many people from so many
different places and backgrounds doing one common thing; out on a
Sunday enjoying the weather and riding our bikes. Got to see a
handlefull of Rivendells Mr.Harry Hugel Quickbeam was one of them.
Harry introduced me to a nice lady who happened to be the wife of the
Convention Organizer, Rich. Who both happen to organize the Tweed
Rides in Sacramento. Even better got to meet Rich personally at the
show! The show itself was bike geek heaven tons of shiny parts and
interesting looking bike. Got to check out the Rickshaw booth who was
testing out their new bag, got to see Mark Dwight(Owner of Rickshaw
Bag Works) fresh with off his tour biking down the coast looking fancy
in his MUSA pants.
Riding and hanging around NAHBS was a memorable experience in itself
but by far the best event was the ride back from Amtrak that Sunday. I
got to meet a great couple Jim and Ginger who rode a Atlantis and
Homer and we hit it off right away. Our connection with our bikes came
secondary to just the experience we all shared and the roads we rode.
It didn't matter how we got there both our of experiences were special
and amazing. It's great how something as simple as a bike can provide
experiences that can cultivate amazing stories.

Rob, who borrowed my 1991 Gary Fisher Sphinx 29er (not a typo).
Actually it was sold back then with 38mm knobbies and drop bars as a
monstercross (another category that didn't exist in '91), but
recently I put some Jones H-bars and XC Comp thumb shifters on for
more technical off-road riding, and 50mm Marathon XRs.

 Photos start here:http://www.flickr.com/photos/gernothuber/page2/

We skipped the long dirt mountain pass, and rolled up the little
remote valley in beautiful warm morning light, made even softer by the
high air pollution from burned-off fields and forest understory. We
zoomed past the Wat and were able to get more than twice as far up the
dirt trail this time, and hit 68 instead of 30 stream crossings. We
once again had to turn around because of time constraints, as we spent
too much time taking photos, but by the time we turned around, the
trail was mostly non-existent, running straight up the creek bed for
hundreds of feet at a time, with only occasional on-land sections. But
occasional ATV tire tracks where the trail entered and exited the
creek showed us that it is actually in use, and that the locals really
just drive up the creek. A few times the water was deep enough to
submerge the hubs, but we kept going. Coming back down the trail,
without stopping for photos, took us 35 minutes, during which we
 crossed the creek 34
times, so not quite one crossing per minute!

Back on the road, once again racing against time, I almost ran over a
6 to 7 foot snake of unidentified species. I am pretty sure it was
neither a cobra nor a python, but that's about all I can say. It
looked grey with longitudinal stripes. It came out of nowhere crossing
the road just in front of me, and braking with all I had I stopped
less than a foot from it. Fortunately it just wanted to get away. Once
again the Hetres on my rSogn did great, only failing on steep slick
clay exits out of the creek.

A CR lister's portfolio of his father's racing days in Addis; he would
have been about my age if I calculate rightly.

This tickled me no end since at the time (I am guessing, but the
bikes, kit and background seem to support my estimate) in the early
'70s I myself was flogging my half-stepped, drop bar'd, Delrin
drivetrain'd Raleigh Sprite and various home-builts around greater
Nairobi, Kenya (lovely, long afternoon rides up to the Rift and back
through the southern England green White Highlands; never occurred to
me to carry water or food). My father handled all of East Africa for
the L of Congress including the offshore islands -- Mauritius,
Reunion, Madascar -- down to Tanzania and spent a lot of time in Addis
-- this was pre-Mengistu Haile Miriam and the Coup.  The racing scene
is very odd, since Addis Ababa was a backwater hicktown compared to
very cosmo Nairobi (which in 1973, when I left for college, made even
present-day Albuquerque, about the same size within city limits, half
a mil, look like a provincial backwater -- well, except for Kibera
which, in thoze daze, was merely a small pustule on the body politick
and not the size of Chicago); yet while N had all other kinds of
racing up to and including a major international rally, it had no
organized bike racing and the only rd I could find circa 1971 in a
local shop was an old Benelux rod type -- God knows how *that* turned
 up there!

Too bad cell phone cameras weren't invented in those days; now it is
probably all gone to hell with destroyed roads (in 1973 the govt had
just built a new, wide asphalt from circa 5 miles of our house on the
old Limuru road to the very lushly English town of Limuru -- and no
traffic at all except during the morning and evening commutes) thanks
to almost 40 years of govt klepts sending the infrastructure monies to
 Switzerland.

[RBW] Just another amazing day on a bike.

2012-02-25 Thread Manuel Acosta
Great couple of days of Winter in California. Days like these you
don't need epic rides to fulfill your cycling needs just a couple of
friends and a little bit of dirt.

Some noted adventures.
Riding with a buddy of mine who hasn't ridden since his crash a year
ago along Redwood Rd. What better way of getting him back on his road
bike then waking him up early in morning for a short and easy
ride. He had fun.

Riding with my dad who's main goal is trying to lose weight and start
eating right because the doctor told him he needs too. Being a man of
action my dad does things or he doesn't. But when he does things he
goes all out, no excuses. He bought a indoor stationary bike, portion
out his meals and lost 7 pounds. Out of the blue, ( like typical dad)
tells me to get the bikes and to go ride with him. Great father and
son bonding. We didn't really talk but we didn't have too. He had fun.

Ride with my buddy Will to RivHQ to grab some wool shirts for me and
Miss'(not Will). Like typical Rivendell fashion we always add an hour
to the ride when Rivendell is a stop because we find ourselves doing
or talking about random things with Grant and crew. Today's Rivendell

- Doing pull-ups on Rivendell's new Pull up bar. Ask Grant how many

- Playing baseball with some old leather catcher mitt Grant let us

aka Eliy. Who turns out to have be a really cool and easy person to

[RBW] Re: Joe's birthday ride, AKA, Fire(place) on the mountain

2012-02-21 Thread Manuel Acosta
Happy Birthday Joe! Sounds like a great ride/ birthday. I'm glad I'm
not the only one that hears Dueling Banjos whenever I'm in back
country. I want to go here and bring up some chairs and a table to
play chess!

On Feb 21, 9:06 pm, Joe Bunik jbu...@gmail.com wrote:
Ha, good bean spillin', Jim! :-)

Yep- I spent a most wonderful b'day out here in Rivendell Country!
with my friend and good neighbor Jim M. I've been wanting to get back
out to Green Ranch for a while, since I'd first heard about and
 visited last Autumn.

For some context, I've had good fortune that 3 of my local riding
buddies here are(/were!) Legolas owners, and I was duly impressed on
test rides. I believe I'd put the phrase if ever you want to get rid
of this... out to each of them. In fact, way back when Riv had first
their crop of Legolai(?), it called out to me as somewhat ideal: light
OS, canti, fancy-but-not-too... One day a few months ago, my phone
 rang...

So: I first heard about Green Ranch here (see
 p.3):http://www.mdia.org/PDF%20Files/MDReviews/Review%20Spring%2005/MDRevi...
... and was intrigued. A little digging pinned down the location and I
was off. It really is a fabulous trail / fire road, and I will happily
ride/guide anybody interested as circumstances permit!

The previous visit, I'd gone up there solo late one afternoon on an
 ill-equipped 650B conversion with semi-slick too-narrow tires - just
too sketchy for the conditions and quickly disappearing light on the
back side of Diablo - so I turned tail and bike-hiked back out to the
road. This time was exactly the terrain and reason why I brought the
Legolas into my life. Absolutely perfect fit by my book.

That said, I won't be taking the bum steer we received from the Park
Rangers again. The trails heading out to the park boundary in fact DO
NOT continue on through to Morgan Territory Rd. Given the precipitous
drop in elevation past the Green Ranch site and the 99% humidity
conditions, we somewhat found ourselves screwed and in that rock/hard
place situation when we came to that first gate... then even worse,
that 2nd gate another 1000' lower on the mountain... I was not
relishing an encounter to find out who would win The Big Jerk Award:
property owner or bandit biker (yes, I realize this is sounding pretty
CYA) !!! Plus, I swear kept hearing Dueling Banjos in my head the
 whole time.

Sadly, Legolas Buddy #3 was unable to join in the Legofest. But a
highlight was encountering a crabon fibre roadie at The Junction who
dropped-jaw upon seeing us. Actually, it turns out he races CX on his
L.! You never walk alone in Rivendell Country!

Neighbor Joe invited me for a ride on his birthday yesterday. We had both
spotted a trail on a map that looked like it might be a good loop over and
around Mt Diablo, so we loaded up our Legolas' (Legoli?) and headed up via
North Gate Rd. At the Junction, we headed towards the summit, but then got
off the road and took the trail less traveled to Green Ranch. Green Ranch
is a former summer home built in 1939 and  designed by William Wurster
(notable Bay Area architect and a former dean of Berkeley's architecture
  school).

The home was designed in a modernist style and built on the southeast side
of the mountain. Joe has a picture of the current view and an old picture
  of the house at:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/joe_bunik/6914384039/
The empty pool, tennis courts, foundation and fireplaces remain but
everything else was dismantled in 1993 to bring the area back to its
  natural state.

We continued past the ruins on the trail to the park boundary. There was a
small gate and a very faded sign that might have once said Private
Property. The trail was obviously seldom used -- grass was growing in it
and the only tracks were deer. We hopped the gate and continued down the
trail heading towards Morgan Territory Road. Eventually the track looked
more used and we came to a much more secure gate with lots of barbed wire.
The public road was on the other side of the gate so we knew we were headed
in the right direction. The gate was high, so Joe squeezed through the
barbed wire fence and I lifted the bikes over to him. I then squeezed
through; no one needed a tetanus shot. We turned around to see the gate
sign: Diablo Archery Club -- No Trespassing. Danger!  Good thing we
didn't have our helmets with antlers. The remainder of the ride was less
  fraught with danger.

I have a few pictures at:

[RBW] Re: Need help deciding... Soma San Marcos or Revamp an 84 Trek 610...

2012-02-09 Thread Manuel Acosta
Do what I do in great life decisions like this. Flip a coin. That's
how I got to be a teacher. Or just go with the San Marcos. Anything
Rivendell touches is gold.

On Feb 7, 6:05 am, trek610 tspin...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi all,

I am at a cross roads and need some help deciding on how best to spend my
 money...

I am looking to get a nice all around bike for commuting, perhaps a century
or two, 2 day bike overnight credit card, and light trail (crushed
limestone/dirt) type riding. In the summer I wind up with 50 - 150 miles
per week.   I am currently using a Surly LHT for this type of riding, and
really like it, but am longing for something a bit more .sprightly.
Here is a picture of my current LHT to give you an idea of how I would
like to setup this new ride.

 http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b110/e_merlin/LHT%202010/IMG_0016.jpg

I am not the tallest guy and ride a 50 - 53cm frame depending on the setup.
I would outfit his new bike in a similar fashion with fenders, racks,
 rando bag etc...

Here is my problem.  I found a 531cs Trek 610 from 1984 that has (IMHO)
nice geometry for my needs.  Some specs - 430mm chain-stay, 52mm rake, 72mm
bottom bracket drop, and i think 72 for so seat and head tube angles.  Trek
does not publish the geometry for anything but 22.5 frames that year...

 Trek Upgrade Path

    1. 700C or 650B wheel conversion - bigger tire, better ride, more fender
clearance (I already have a nice set of velocity 700c wheels for this
    project)
    2. complete powder coat
    3. Canti brake studs added
    4. brazeons for various items
    5. cold set the rear end
    6. etc...

I guess in the end this will require many new parts, some of which I have,
but will be a considerable investment nonetheless.

Now here comes the San Marcos  It seems to be a nice solution as well
and may very well similar in price to the trek by the time I am done with
the frame parts.  The San Marcos may be a bit more, but may be a better
choice in the long run.  The San Marcos seems to have perfect geometry for
 my kind of riding...

What would you do if you were me?  What bike will better serve me in the
long run.  I have to admit, since I live in Madison WI the Trek has some
sentimental value to me.  The San Marcos lugs look really nice however!  I
am torn with which direction to go, and since this is a big outlay of cash
for me I am looking for some advice before going one way or the other...

Thanks in a advance to any/all help.

 Thanks

trouble-free comfy Riv experience.  I had just replaced the crank -
formerly an XD 700 48/34t double.  I put my older Suntour XC Pro crank with
a 46/32t double config (left off a granny ring), and set it up a few nights
before.  I was glad for the slightly lower (32-32) gearing, as there were
definitely hills on this ride. I also found that going between the former
170mm length of the Sugino to the 175mm Suntour didn't make much of an
impact on me.  It felt totally fine.  I used both front and rear Acorn
bags, and overpacked clothing, but ended up missing on the food side.  This
ride didn't have too many convenience stores, and I was on a roll to finish
  it with minimal stops.
That was a mistake.  I had done a lot of commuting the week before, and
was pretty tired by Saturday.  This was after a month off the bike
(holidays, colds, etc...).  I managed to meet up with a great chap who ran
about the same pace, and we jabbered on and on until I started to realize
all was not well.  I had a bit of a pre-bonk at about the half-way point,
and quickly ate some trail mix and a granola bar, and downed some water.
This got me to about 95k, and then I really just lost my legs and felt
dizzy.  I made it in, but had to eat, and stop for more food/water on the
way home so I wouldn't fall asleep.
Hmmm - not too good at this longer ride nutrition stuff yet.  Oh well, I
have to get that sorted, as it was a great ride.  Not a lot of traffic on

[RBW] Re: Trouble loading Rivbike.com

2012-01-26 Thread Manuel Acosta
One of my favorite things about the Rivendell website are the
pictures. Every picture on the site always reminds me that I should be
riding my bike. I say hell with fast loading. Some things are best
when slowed down.

On Jan 26, 1:51 pm, Dave Rivbike d...@rivbike.com wrote:
Yes, the slideshow. It makes the homepage heavier than it has to be.
Yet it's one of the most loved features of our site, has been for
 years.
The images are downsized to a reasonable level, but you still have to
load them any time a new image is added or your cache is cleared.
For site speed, I'd love to have just one image there, the most recent
campout photo, but the slideshow is by far one of most popular
features on the site, so I'm kinda stuck there.

I think if I removed that, I'd get more heat than if I leave it.

One compromise  is to simply have the most recent photo there on the
homepage with the featured products, and when you click on that image,
you redirect to the whole slideshow, or even better linked out to an
archive of ALL the previous homepage photos we've used in the past.
That way the site would load faster for everyone, and those that want
to watch pictures and simply click out to another page and can wait
 for that to load.
Downside is you would get the same image each visit (till we change it
for a new one) instead of the random choice from the bunch.

Interested what y'all have to say about this?
I lean towards faster faster faster, but it might be a hard sell since
most folks seem to like it.

fit perfectly on my M-12 I had installed a few weeks previous.

By 12:00 the sun had come out and most of the snow was gone. I was moping
about in my robe and PJs (if you have never seen a 6'6 guy in full length
PJs...) wearily getting some work done when my wife came in and forced me
to get out while my son was still sleeping. A few minutes later I was
enjoying myself on the Burke avoiding pedestrians and snow patches. It was
 amazing.

I forgot my gloves and I don't own winter gloves anyway so I decided to
stop at Recycled Cycles to see if I could find a cheap pair. A crow cawed
as I dismounted my bike. I leaned it against the bike rack and opened my
new bag to retrieve my mini u-lock. I felt so wonderful and smug showing
off the new bag. Front bags are so civilized and what-not. But then
something wet and squishy landed my hand, on my bag, and right in the front
 pocket. Was it snow? Dirt?

The crow was right above me. It had pooped in my brand new bag the very
first time I had opened it in public.

I went in and asked for a paper towel and had it cleaned up pretty quickly.
The buzz from riding for the first time in a week or more couldn't be
faded. Besides: in Italy birds pooping on your head is considered good luck
 right?

I attached a pic from the ride.

I'm considering shipping our bikes (seems cheaper than bringing them

hybrids, neither of which appeals to me.  On a previous similar

I rode Patrick's former Motobecane down the California coast from San
Francisco to Monterey and back this past weekend. Here's a brief blog post
and a link to photos from the ride.

 http://campyonlyguy.blogspot.com/2012/01/photos-from-weekend.html

I was using a 3-speed fixed-gear Sturmey Archer drivetrain, which performed
flawlessly and got me up the steep stuff (I was running a gear combo that
gave me ratios of 74, 56, and 44 gear inches).

To prove that people appreciate Riv-ish bikes, I received several compliments
on the Motobecane, including one young man getting off BART in Berkeley who
 commented, Nice build!

Ride report made me smile! Pictures make me jealous! All we have here

the snow that looks like fun to ride through. Riding in the rain is
fun, but only for the first few times. When are you planning to
heading back to Cal?

normal sidewalk to the trail routine in favor of roads ... In my head
I'm worried once we get to the trails we won't e able to make it far
with unstudded tires. We arrive and roll gingerly first, then more to
normal.  I thought we were going for a short 10 mile ride. Nope.  Dad
loves it so much it turns out we're doing 35 -- at HIS insistence. I
wish I woulda known, woulda worn more than commando jeans :)

we stop at a McD's on the way back to warm the toes and a man asks us
if it's too cold to ride, nope, with a cheeky smile he gets from me.
He chats me up about his trek with a spring loaded fork and super fat
cushioned sprung seat and his triangle stand (indoor bicycle
trainer) and compliments us on our Schwinns :) he also tells us
about how he broke his ankle on a ladder two years ago, got a buy-out
retirement package from GM, how his wife left him and his kids took
off and don't see him anymore. I feel badly. He asks dad if he's
divorced. My dad says laughing, not yet!  I love my dad :)

We roll out and 4 miles later stops and asks me to check his rear
brake because he thinks it's rubbing. I check and show him it's fine.
look at the front of his bike and find I can't even turn the front
 wheel.

There is SNOW PACKED BETWEEN THE TIRE AND FENDER.  Dad holds his bike
up, I pop off the front wheel, find a stick and clean out the snow-
 jam.

Pop the wheel back on and he's as happy as a little boy, pedaling
furiously and explaining as he shakes shakes his head that he thought
he was finally getting old, losing his power, his strength.  We both
are laughing hysterically at what had happened and dad's dramatic
reaction and feel grateful and thankful for our health and
 friendship.

By this time we make it to Orchard Lake, where Chief Pontiac (after
whom the automobile was named) is buried on Apple Island, and take a
few moments to enjoy the beautiful scenery.  Dad decides to forego the
trail for streets and we're pedaling into a frigid headwind powered by
Orchard Lake and our fingers are in so much pain because of it so
after 6 miles we walk into a Starbucks for a nice cuppacoffee to warm
 up and caffeinate our engines.

The rest of the ride home is on salted roads (maybe I should cringe
here but I'm really okay with it). I get flicked off by 3 dudes in a
brand new Benz and throw up a double duce, screaming peace! ... and
then laugh as I approach them at a red light and they don't know how
 to react to my non-hostility.

Ended the ride off right with a beautiful sunset.

I gotta say, today was a good day. - Ice Cube

[RBW] Once upon a ride... (a Homage to Ray Hosler Cycling Adventures.)

2012-01-09 Thread Manuel Acosta
After reading one of Ray Hosler's adventures of him and various of
other Bay Area cycling legends attempt to ride over to Portola Park
through Big Dipper Ranch.( You can read this story and others on his
website here http://rayhosler.wordpress.com/2011/10/02/once-upon-a-ride-2/)
It inspired me to go on an adventure myself. Being Rivendellish in
spirit but not via bike I decided to head out on the road towards the
Pleasanton Ridge Park looking through a way to get to Castro Valley.
Surprisingly my friends are a lot more smarter when they hear, Want
to look for a way through Castro Valley via mountain biking trails on
a road bike? Sadly this ride went solo. And off I went not really
following any route just riding. Once I got to Pleasanton Ridge Park I
decided to follow a group of mountain bikers. While riding up a hill
they jokingly told me my tires were balled, I replied if they knew if
there was a cafe shop near the top we exchanged laughs and nods as I
make my way towards CV. As I ride down Cowing Trail I see a sign that
says Trail End Ahead 1/3 mile. At this point of the ride I get one
of those WTF moments. I get stuck at my first locked cow gate. Here I
sat and thought about my options: turn back and back track my way back
into Pleasanton or hop the fence and risk getting shot for
trespassing. Being stuck on a time constrain and by myself I did the
most reasonable thing; hop the fence and book it to the closest road.
I have feelings of guilt and excitement as I bypass cows and find
myself hopping more fences until I reach a beautiful hill overlooking
the nearest road Palomares! I'm gitty that I finally found my exit out
and I ride/walk down to hop the last fence. While it was an adventure
I don't ever recommend trespassing private property. So in case you
were wondering Pleasanton Ridge does not connect to Castro Valley.

Pictures Proved it happened:
