[RBW] Re: Upgrade to Sam Hillborne from a Surly Corss-Check?
I've had both. Cross check is a RAD bike. Pros didnt worry about it as much, felt a little quicker handeling wise. Funner where quicker feeling handling might apply. Cons not as pretty, not as stable feeling. Sam H is a RAD bike. Pros bars up higher more easily. Prettier, more stable feeling. Less tiring to ride / better comfort. So as with anything YMMV. But I wouldnt hesitate to buy either. Both can be alot of fun neither is slow depending on tires, setup and your legs. Both lean towards durability over light weight. If I had to tip the scales one way or the other I'd say this, longer more casual riding Sam. More energetic playful shorter rides cross check. Either can do both of course but if I had to pick. And I would be very happy either way.❤ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Thoughts on albastach bars
I think they are great bars. Pair well with single speed riding. Have them on my simple one and love them there because I am regularly moving my hands around to chug up hills. Offer lots of good hand positions if you are the type who likes to fidget. Get them up high and close as recomended, dirtdrop stem or similar to your looks liking a great choice. Lots of fun. If you are just going to be sitting and grinding away with your hands in a single position maybe not the best choice but everyone is different...my recomendation is they are best on a playful shorter distance ride kinda bike. A la single speed, city / shortish commute, dirt road rambler... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Geo Question
Hugh, Happy new year. Been busy but good. Would love to get out there for a ride. It's been a while. Free time has been dedicated to other projects of late. Picked up playing music again after almost a 20 year hiatus. It would be great to blow the dust of the old Rivs and get out there again. And simple math is all I can do, so i just got lucky on that one . I'm part of the I like high bars club, but not the look of mucho stem sticking out. So that little ditty helps me stay close. Although my Atlantis at 56 is a bit on the small side and a bit quillyish for me.樂 Got a riser stem I've been sitting on forever to straighten that out a bit. Any way, know anyone that's got a garage queenish 58 local to socal that might be willing to swap. I'd be open... [RBW] Geo Question
Hey Hugh, Hope all is good. Just as a general observation I find adding the degree by which the top tube upslopes to the seat tube length gets ya pretty close. Not sure why Riv hasn't gone to sizing by stack rather than seat tube. I think the stack gives a better idea of how the bike will really fit. Man I miss my 56 Sam Hillborne with around 62 stack height. Bars got up there nice and comfy without a ton of stem sticking out. Any way maybe it's just so people can handle a smaller larger size. What, I ride a 52 Clem that's so big. If ya tell someone it fits kinda like a 58/9 勞. [RBW] Re: FS: Rambouillet - 54cm - $1,300 + shipping CONUS
Wow this is a fantastic deal and I'm not one apt to comment on others price! The rambo is a GREAT bike. Way undervalued. Built by Toyo in Japan. I have a 58 and will not likely ever sell it. For road riding it's a blast really hits the bulls eye between sporty / spirited and comfortable. Dont worry about tire size being a bit limited by today's standards the bike handles great with 28 to 32s. And as for pbh I would even say you could go up a size from Riv's recommendation and be fine. Shorter stem and no Cape required. [RBW] Hunqapillar or Appaloosa?
I'd ask if you are the type who likes to have one or multiple bikes. If one go Appa. If you like to have bikes that are more specalized get the Hunqa. I'm sure both are great and can be used as allrounders as most Rivs can. But if ya buy kinda smack dab in the middle like with an appa, if you ever go to buy a new bike you will be looking for ways to differentiate it or asking yourself just why did you get the new one. I ran into this with my Atlantis and Clem. Buy Rivs towards the ends Hunqa and Roadini. With that kinda setup most all middle ground is covered. or buy one in the middle and strech towards the ends and don't worry about what you are missing because it wont be much as far as general fun and fitness riding go... best, Richard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Saddle height vs PBH
I prefer the heel on pedal method plus a few hairs up. I found Riv's recomendation of pbh -10 or 11 put me a tad high. Always felt like I was reaching for the pedals and my toes were pointed down to much for my taste. I prefer a flatter foot while pedaling. I end up around 72.5-73 with a 85 cm pbh measured by the old book jammed up crotch method. I've noticed Appas poping up to...might just be that the model is so new it's kinda striking to see um for sale so soon...Atlantis, Sam, Hilsen, have all been around for quite some time, to me it I guess I expect to see them pop up given the supply out there and that owners have prolly had a chance to have them around for a while... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] PSA: 60cm Quickbeam on eBay
+1 Mojo, and while I haven't quite thrown in the towel yet...after my last selling experience here I do agree this can be an "interesting" crowd to sell to !). I noticed surly and salsa has a trder / for sale page on facebook, I haven't noticed one for Rivs but might be something to that idea. Anyway I've also noticed that while under no pretense of manners and general niceness, that there arnt people making snarkey remarks about the asking prices even if / when they might seem a bit high. Having bought and sold way to much bike stuff (for me anway) I don't disparage people's asking prices. I assume that like myself, they are prolly gonna dump the money back into a different project or trying to recoup some of their losses on previous sales of bike stuff. If a deal is sweet GREAT! Good for the person who scores said deal. Otherwise I'm not sure what the negativity about asking prices on this list is all about. And yes there are cases that are funny and a bit obscene like the 50-100 Riv waterbottles on ebay and, no this doesn't apply to the entire list, I've had lots a cool easy transactions too, and yes to each his own as to what they consider fair prices...but really!? Re: [RBW] Re: N = ? or How do you decide how many bikes to own?
So I have a few factors that help me decide, the first is how much I value my marriage, second space and lastly trying to balance that with my constant search for the "perfect" stable. My ideal number is around four. one for fastish for me road, single speeder, all rounder, and mountain bike. I think I could get away with two if I had to. But any more than four I feel choice paralysis kick in every time I go to ride. Right now I have three bikes all Rivs, an Atlantis, Simple One, and Clem. Also have a San Marcos frame I am on the fence about and that is currently up for sale but that might change. Currently i am looking to go with something more "modern" and a bit less precious in my mimd,at the moment plus size tire karate monkey or salsa vaya kinda got my attention... best, Richard " this group always makes me feel better about my bike habbit" Rios :) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. yes. as just a so soish bike wrencher my solution is as follows.. pull the little dust cap back and apply a little light lubricant I used T9 suff. make shure dust cap is seated flush against hub, mine kept getting sucked into hub body. Find a big hill to ride up n down a few times fast n it should be good. [RBW] Re: Clem L (low bar) for longer rides?
Roberta, I'm not sure what your fitness goals are but I come down on the side of bike riding isn't that great a form of exercise. I think Grant has written a good number of posts about this topic. If I recall correctly without trying to put words in anyone's mouth, I think it is in part how the whole just ride thing came about. Any way if you wanna be "fit" in that you can ride long miles quickly then maybe continue down the road you are going and check out specalized or trek or any number of the other bike manufactures out there. perhaps a Roadeo or Roadini of you wanna stay with Riv. Otherwise do some burpees, sit ups, push ups, and hit training. Much better excersize and you will get "Fit" this way. Use your bike rides for fun and enjoying nature. If you do the other stuff you can hop on your bike and do 40-50 miles no problem. will you be super fast like the guys and gals who put all the fast miles in. prolly not, but unless you are racing who cares. By the way I have a clem H. it rides like a dream and when I have time I take off rambling for the day. I dont count miles but the bike has never been any sort of barrier to me riding as fast or as far as I would care to go. best, Richard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Appaloosa Vs Clem Smith
Hi, I'll chime in here, as I was in a somewhat similar situation only I test road the appa and bought a clem blind after doing so. I feel that the appa's ride was a bit snappier overall it felt to me a bit more roadish. Clem in the other hand I would characterize as a bit more stable perhaps leaning a hair more towards rough stuff. I'd put any notion of clem being strictly commuterish to the side. Yes Clem would make a great commuter but it really is an all rounder like any Riv. Truth be told I instantly loved the feeling of the appa and when I first road the Clem not so much. But the more time I have spent aboard Clem the more I have grown to LOVE it. I intend to do a full write up at some point but will share a few impressions here. Clem is smooth and stable, but not slow. Slow is relative but for the type of bike / non race bike Clem scoots along nicely. Put the hammer down and clem responds surprisingly well. Clem is a rambling bike for riding like when you were a kid. Pack a bag lunch and some Capri sun and set off exploring for the day. Clem is great on any "road" surface and really shines on non technical fire trails. Clem is perfect for a front rack and basket. The bike really is a home run in so many ways. all that said I have a few nits to pick. The sunrace shifters and I have yet to make good friends. The little clicks that sometimes put you in gear perfectly and sometimes not are...well less than ideal. I would have like to seen the 52cm size come with 58cm boscos. for some reason the 55s felt to narrow to me. I'm pretty medium at 5' 9" 170ish. lastly the little rubber seals / dust caps on the hubs have taken some fiddeling with to stop squeaking. Again all minor things. I think either way you go you won't be dissapointed. might want to ask yourself if the lugs are worth it to you or not. also I feel a bit more at ease using clem then my other more expensive Rivs but that's just me as I grew up during the everything needs to stay in mint condition baseball card hoarding 80s /90s ears and that has kinda stuck with me. Hope that helps some. Again I really enjoy clem and can whole heartedly recommend it owing / having had owned a numer of other Rivs. Ride wise you will be missing nothing if you buy a clem except for the lugs of course. best Richard -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I couldn't really get the front end up on my long CS proto hunqapillar much less wheelie it. haven't really tried on my clem but I'm not so sure how that would go with non bull boscosif anyone can I'd love he see a video of it as well :) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] cool new geometry section on rivbike.com
Yep i dig it. I'm guessing it's fairly new to as i just noticed it the other day. Saddle height suggestion seems to be dropping a bit, I wonder why? [RBW] Re: Silver or green Joe?
Based on my personal experience I say go silver here is why. Somehow I ended up with 3 greenish Rivs at one point in time, an atlantis, simpleone, and proto hunqa. My wife walks into the garage one day and says my bikes are cute because of the ombre color scheme! Cute and ombre not what I want to hear about my manly beast bicycles, I cringed !) But seriously Riv seems to do alot of green frames. Seems like the silvers and mustards show up a bit less. So if you plan on having more than one Riv and don't want em to end up all matchy matchy cute ombre style grab a silver or orange or mustard when they come up... Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell uses BikeFlights
Agreed about Riv's shipping cost. I always cringe a bit when I sell a bike and know it's gotta be shipped, it's a fair amount of work. In fact after a few DIY bike boxing adventures I don't / wont do it myself any more. I now take it to the bike shop who charges 60$. They do a good job or I wouldn't use them but I don't think they put in the love Riv does and they use recycled materials. So if I think about it like that Riv's shipping is very reasonable. It still bums me out to pay it but watcha gonna do? I can't rationalize spending so much on a bike and then gettin all cheapskate on shipping... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. AWESOME bike! Your gonna love it! Worth every penny of the price you paid for it IMHO. I find the second hand market on Rivs kinda strange price wise, seems like it brings all the skinflint types out, at least has been my experience when trying to sell a used Rivendell. Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: VP Pedals on sale
There's been a good bit said. So I'll just throw in my .02. I try to support my LBS whenever possible. But when I do I go there with the mindset of I am paying for service and dont really sweat the price. If the service isn't there then why would I pay a higher price? And I dont. I do and don't like the really low ball blow out prices. I like them because they can be nice when you find them and it's something useful. But then they bum me out because i know that it really kills the price of that item on the second hand market. I recently bought a clem for full price and it is worth it! But then I saw Riv had discounted it and I thought dang if I ever go to sell, which I don't plan on but I never rule out, people will remember that lower price. This happens to me occasionally enough because I am in a situation where i kinda have to buy to try for better or worse. Unfortunately my experiences with most LBS has been on the not that good side of things. Most of the shops in my area cater to the racier type folks. so when I ask for "regular" type stuff they don't typically stock they don't seem in all that much of a hurry to help. Which sours me in general to tryin LBS.This has happened to me at shops even when they do specialize in "normal" suff. I took a trip out to one such shop in the Los Angeles area about a 75 min drive from where I live to buy a bike. I said yeah I'll take it! Order it up... and they gave me some rig a ma roll about needing to check stock first and then never got back to me until days later after having had promised to get back much sooner. I end ended up buying the bike direct and could clearly see the bike was I'm stock online from jump. Not sure what that was about but I was bummed because i really wanted to find a great new shop to support...b ut the servuce wasn't there :(. I'm not money rich but am blessed to have a wife kid, morgage and all that good stuff. Expensive bikes and parts are a luxury for me so I spend to support when I can and save a few bucks when possible. I support Rivendell as much as I can because I really have learned so much about cycling from Grant. If I hadn't found Riv I'd prolly be all hunched over on some to small frame staring at the ground and missing out on so much of what I enjoy about riding a bike. That is worth something to me. With that said sometimes I am broker than others and because I am here in Cali I get hit with tax plus shipping and the higher price from Riv which just makes that voice kick in and say I gotta support my family also and that cheaper price becomes to hard to pass up... There shouldnt be any judgemt passing or guilt. I think amongst those who participate in this group we are all mindful and all just doing the best we can working within the economy we have. Stevies looks great by the way! I would love to have a shop like that in my neck of the woods. Seems to show good service really does sell. Re: [RBW] strada rosa, goatheads, tubeless
Yes there are lots of goatheads out there. I say how good are you at fixing flats and how much do you mind mid ride flat repair. If you are good run em as is and patch the flats as they come along. Medium don't care slime or orange seal is great. Hate fixing flats tire liners and some sorta sealant and you are good to go. For what it's worth I've done the ride twice and love it! :) the first time I had nada other than pasela tour guard tires and had one goat head flat towards the very end of the ride. The other time I ran tire liners and had zero flats. But the route changes so you might want to check in with ride organizers as to what they will be running the ride through for the best advice. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Clem / long CS CROW PIE!
Definitely different opinions here which makes things fun and interesting, I guess it just remains to be seen as to how i feel the Clem rides once it arrives. I briefly spoke to Grant about Clem and he gave it a ringing endorsement "your gonna love it". I didn't go into all the details and ask for a comparison or anything like that i had actually just called in about ordering some bar tape and happened to catch him on the phone. As for the frame price i don't know that one being more expensive than the other makes one better straight off. My understanding is that it is primairly a labor cost issue and not frame quality per se. I am sure a good bike designer can account for tube specs and butting and get it to ride pretty much any way they would like. As for the Hunqa I think i mentioned in one of the posts that i had ordered that bike to be my "mountain bike". Mind you i didn't think that i was going to be able to scream down the hills of whistler on it, but it just didn't end up working for me anything beyond pretty mellow fire roading. I apologize if this didn't come through clearly most my posts are just kinda shot off the cuff from my cell phone. It was / is a great bike for off road touring, and all around heavy duty riding. But the long CS and handlebar setup bullmoose just didn't work for me. I could have monkeyed around with the bars but i would have gone to something more swept back and pushed the bike more in the touring camping commuting direction which is not what i had intended. When i went to check out Clem and rode the Appa i had no such preconceived notions as to how i intend to ride the bike. I just rode it and it felt great! I have an Atlantis that i use as my road bike, a simple one for darting about town, a surly for the time being for mountain biking, so in my mind justifying Clem came down to a great "whatevering" (thanks for the term gravel and grind) bike. I'm in the camp of glad it is TIGed and perhaps will feel a bit less precious to me. The wheel house did have a Clem frame that I was able to check out and it was really nicely done! Looked better than i had expected it to. Yes it was TIGed but the welds looked super clean and Riv really did a great job with all the details they put into the bike. I was really surprised at how well it all came together. I will report back once i get a chance to give Clem a good go. Oh yeah I like 650B and have found that tires really make a huge / the biggest difference as to how lively a bike feels. [RBW] Re: Clem / long CS CROW PIE!
Thanks for the feedback ian. I read as much as I can and hand wring while trying to make sense of the numbers but admittedly I am no where near close to an expert on any of that. I usually just go by how a bike"feels" for what I am looking to do with it. Now I had a long CS hunqapillar proto that really didn't end up working for me. Perhaps it was my expectation of the bike based on what I was thinking of using it for / as a "mountain bike that really didn't make it work for me. or perhaps it was the way it was set up and how that got along with my body proportions (longish? top tube bullmoose bars and long CS). When i rode the appa I really didn't go into it expecting anything and I have a surly that covers mountain biking so I wasn't framing the bike up as a full blown off roader. When i just left well enough alone and pedaled...the ride was GREAT. Just felt fun like a sporty kids bike. Made me want to "just ride" around endlessly slaloming through anything I could find fast or slow didn't seem to matter. I'm not exactly sure what makes the bike feel the way it does or different from my first experience with long CS, but I gotta say it again the ride felt great! Perhaps swept back bars are the magic ticket that make the long CS shine for me, have to shake my head and say I dunno!? Does it matter? But if the Clem rides even 80 percent the same as an appa then that is totally close enough for me. As for the lugs I have a couple of other Rivs with a full Monty worth of em. I actually like that clem is a bit plain. I am in my 40s now and grew up in the era of base ball card collecting and the notion of keeping everything in gem mint condition. That has kinda followed me and I hope to see clem as a little less precious and beausage worthy...we shall see !) bAnyy the way any one want to buy a hoard of mint condition 1990s baseball cards !) [RBW] Re: Clem / long CS CROW PIE!
Hi masmojo, I have read various opinions on the ride qualities would you share your impressions on how they differ. From what I put together I thought it would be good enough. I anticipate that the clem will ride a bit more husky than the appa but what impressed me was the smooth yet nimble feeling it had. I was / am hoping the clem will share most If not all of that. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts. Also who does clem / Clementine compair with atlantis. Any one else care to weigh in with their impressions that would be great as well. I really was hoping to test ride the clem but it was gone. One of the bummers about being a so cal Rob fan no "easy" way to test ride so you hope you are close. [RBW] Clem / long CS CROW PIE!
So a few weeks back The Wheelhouse los angeles posted on their facebook page that they had some Clems, Appas, and Sams in stock. So I though Howdee I live close enough to there to grab a quick look. And there is a pretty decent ramen shop near by score twofer! Also to be completely honest the new bike bug has been biting a bit. Anyhow I stopped by to check out the bikes, the clem that was my size 52 had already been sold and I have owned a Sam so I was offered a test ride on the Appa. It was a size to small but they got things close enough for me to take it for a spin...and well WOW was I surprised! Not that I should have been per say but I was. Two words Smooth and responsive! Like a Caddie with Porsche handling! Also loved the choco moose bars that were on there. The forward hand position felt really good to me and natural better than that of the Albas for compairson. So as for the crow I've been a bit of a poopooer on the whole long CS thing. Not in any major way but based on my experience with a particular bike. Now I don't know if the feeling I got was because of the smaller frame or bar position or simply because it was a parking lot test ride and the bike is STUNNING! But man was I impressed. So much so I whent ahead and ordered a Clem. Not the appa I know but I had sold a few bikes recently and thats what I had the scratch for. Still might be an appa in my future as an upgrade from clem if need be. Anyway when the Clem arrives I sure hope I have the same experience all over again and get to eat a great big giant Clem Smith / long CS CROW pie! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Multi Use Path Etiquette
Maybe I'm just weird but I do glance back every so often as I walk along. Do the same on my bike. Keeps me from being surprised at least 80 percent of the time. Also most bikes are not absolutely silent usually there will be some kind of noise that alerts me to a bike comming along. Tire buzz, chain squeek, brake squeel, friends talking and enjoying the ride, dirt or leaves being ran over. The only problem I find with that is if some one is playing out racing fantasies and being a bit inconsiderate, then they will close to fast to react to and it is a bit startling. But hey if having to pay some attention to what is going on in the environment is to much to ask ...maybe I'll just go into the mirrors for pedestrians buisness! That way they can just look straight ahead, with ear buds in, monitoring Fit bit, smoking a pipe, drinking a cup o' joe, while reading Ann Patchette and still see what is going on behind them !) Re: [RBW] Re: Multi Use Path Etiquette
As to original question posed. I say yes it is absolutely ok, go for it and why not. My experience is that people you can pass in this manner are generally the more considerate and aware types. They don't seem startled or to mind. I know I dont, just slow down a bit and go on about your buisness. I find the issue to be with the groups of walkers or cyclist taking up the whole path talking loudly and in general showing no concern for others. But these folks tend to be a no win...if you just try to go around quietly they look at you all indignantly and don't seem to want to share the space or if you use a bell they seem startled and scatter in all directions causing even more of a ruckus and still look at ya all indignantly. People with kids and dogs I will generally try and give some warning because kids being kids will dart and I wouldn't want them or fido to get hurt. Point being everyone should keep a general awareness of others about them on multi use paths and be considerate / use common sense. Then there really is no problem and need to signal every time you go around. I dont honk before I pass in my car. The expectation is that as drivers we keep a general awareness of what is happening around us for everyone's safety. Think the same should be true of multi use paths as well. I also like my brass bells because they look, and sound great. I will ping mine at times just for shits and giggles because the sound makes me feel happy. What I actually find them most useful for is when going around blind corners or when or where sight is somehow limited. Then I will just ping away to let others know I am around. [RBW] Re: PSA Inexpensive Cheviut
Yeah selling on CL is no fun at all. Between the scammers, the low ballers, the information seekers with no intention to buy, and flakes it really does get a bit frustrating! So sadly I go all Bird in hand when selling. Doesn't feel so nice but darn... My experience selling a Rivemdell has always seemed worse VERY low baller and info seeker heavy! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Hi Everyone, Have a brand new Velo orange Cigne stem nickle plated for sale small scratch version (which is almost nothing don't know why they even mentioned it). Also including a set of new 31.8 to 26.0 shims as well as a Titanium simworks 20mm with me headset spacer. The spacer matches both the diameter and color of the stem pretty closely so if you wanted to get a couple of extra cm on there to really get the bars up this will look a good bit better than using an aluminum spacer t. Asking 86.00$ Shipped paypal friends and family. Stems are currently out of stock at Velo Orange. Any questions feel free to ask.
