[RBW] Mission Peak - S240

2011-06-27 Thread manueljohnacosta
Short trip up Mission Peak. Rode up the from the Ohlone College side
and took my good friend Tommy. We all have friends like my friend
Tommy. You know those type of guys that just ride like a demon. Funny
thing is that I introduced him into cycling. And after one year the
buddy I was taking on short rides is leaving me eat his dust. Lucky
for me being weighted down with camp gear and walking up steep fire
roads is the great equalizer. We got to camp and hiked to the top of
Mission Peak to cook dinner. Sadly we forget the dinner at my
apartment and we were stuck eating breakfast for dinner. Bacon and
Bacon. At the top of Mission Peak we surveyed the beautiful lights of
Fremont and San Jose. We played with a handful of shots. Great night
great trip.

Pictures proved it happen:

Just a quick heads-up that the ride start time has changed to 7 am,

 register online. ;)

I'll be riding an off-topic, but historically related bike. I had
considered the QB for a few seconds, but I have really been lacking
the miles as of late. One of my riding bud's will be on her

[RBW] Bike Tour with the Venturing Crew

2011-05-01 Thread manueljohnacosta
A Little Story about the Tour De Bay Area.

Venturing Crew #999 just finished their first bike tour ever. Three
venturers and three adults experienced the ride of a life time!
Starting from San Jose we rode a short 20 miles to Fremont Bart
station to San Francisco. Once on the Embarcadero we did the tourist
route and explored the greatness that is the pier. Riding to the
Giants stadium, then had some calm chowder at the pier and even played
foose-ball at the old penny arcades. The weather couldn't be more
perfect for a ride up to the Golden Gate and into Marin. The ride up
to Hawk Camp proved to be difficult to some of the riders because of
their skinny tires and for one advisor particular when we found out
that his tire was rubbing on the inside of his rim for the whole ride
up to Marin. (We were wondering why he was the slowest rider in the
group.) The first day ended with us finding Hawk Camp in the dark
after a handful of wrong turns. We finished with only two broken
racks, two broken panniers, a exploded tire and one a very tired
advisor. Great first day!

The second day we woke up to something very unexpected a clear bright
day in San Francisco! We first rode down to one of the classiest
streets in San Francisco, Haight Street! One of the Advisors had an
old friend that lived in The Lion House near Haight Street and was
willing to feed us breakfast! He was able to led us out of San
Francisco into Pacifica were we instead of taking Devil's Slide, we
took the infamous Planet of the Apes road. For those not familiar with
the route it used to be the original road from Pacifica to Half Moon
Bay. Imagine a nice paved road where over grown plants creep from all
sides then all of a sudden the road break away from you and all your
left with is cliffs over looking Half Moon Bay. After a long day in
the saddle we finish with Straw Hat Pizza and ranch dressing. The best
combination of healthy food. Finishing off a hard day in the saddle
with some soccer and gymnastics on the beach.

The third day we got into a groove when we rode our way down to Santa
Cruz. Had a quick stop at Met with another advisor down in Davenport
and had a nice paceline all the way down the the Boardwalk. We had
great time hanging out at the Boardwalk playing some ultimate Frisbee
and jumping into the water. Unfortunately we lost two advisors and one
venturer when they had to end their trip early due to personal reason.
Where we started with six we had to finish with three. The last few of
us that remanded we stayed in New Brighton State Beach. That night
the last two venturers learned the art of catching sand crabs!

The last day we rode our way back from Santa Cruz to San Jose. Heading
over the hill we were greeted with a decent down in dirt into Los
Gatos. We finished up the short but interesting ride with some mexican
food and Jarritos. The three riders finished the loop around the Bay
Area. It's an amazing feeling to experience the same route with my
students that I did just two years prior. My first time riding down
the coast, my dream was to share this experience to my future
students. Now after two years of teaching I get my wish. Granted that
there were plenty of hardship along the way, flat tires, sore butts,
broken racks, exploded panniers, the result of this trip was more than
I could have expected. Seeing the growth that I had with my students
was all I needed to make this trip memorable. Showing them that their
world is a lot more bigger you're willing to bike just a little
farther.

Pictures proved it happened:

Day 1- San Jose to Hawk Camp, Marin

I second the tarp and the sleeping bag. One of the best advise I got

replies, Then you'll get wet and it will probably be miserable.

I've been a big fan of ultra-light backpacking and I try to keep my

If you are coming up through SF to get to Hawk Camp, you probably want to
stop at Mollie Stone's market on Harbor Bridgeway to load up on supplies.
There's not a lot of services once you head out on Tennesee Valley Road.
There is a fruit/veggie stand just at the intersection of TVR and Hwy 1
(Shoreline).  There is also a market just beyond TVR at Tam Junction.

Pit toilets at the parking lot - I forget the specific amenities at the
campsite.  It can be pretty cool in that valley - fog is the norm this time
of year and you are fairly close to the coast.

Downtown Mill Valley is a few miles up Miller Ave.  Good coffee and snacks
 in town.

On Bridgeway, there's Fish at the harbor end of Harbor Ave, which has a
take out and eat counter service.  Not cheap, but not bad.  Ditto with Cibo
on Bridgeway in Sausalito, which has tables outside - nice if the sun is
out.  Avatar's Punjabi burritos in downtown Mill Valley will fill you up
 with stunningly good food.

Sounds like a fine adventure. Ride safe and have fun!

[RBW] Venturing Crew Monument Peak to Mission Peak Ride!

2011-04-17 Thread manueljohnacosta
For those that don't know I mentor a co-ed Boy Scout Troop at the
school that I work called Venturing Crew #999. One of my greatest
perks in my life is the ability to share both my love for biking and
my love of teaching in one rolled up bunch. Last Friday crew #999
conquered two mountains by bike in anticipation for their trip around
the Bay Area. Last Friday right after school five ambitious venturers
try to climb Monument Peak. Climbing up Monument Peak proved much more
than any of us could handle. The 3 miles in 2000 feet of elevation
seemed easier on paper. All the hard work and sweat couldn't damper
the views of the sun setting on the climb up. We finally get up to
Mission Peak and we were greeted with the amazing views of the city
lights. The amazing lights was on par with the screaming decent down
with only the moon lighting the road ahead of us. The decent down was
on par with the after ride food, which consisted only the healthiest
food, microwave chicken pot pie, chicken noodle soup and left over ice
cream cake! It's great having to share these experience with my
students. Seeing them push themselves to their limits and realize that
like biking, life has it's ups and downs. Everyone has to pay their
dues, but you can always look forward to the decent down. (Even if you
can't see the road ahead of you!)

Two sets of pictures proved it happen:

means there is now fewer than before.

This act appealed to me for its simplicity - no logs to fill out, no big
specific mileage commitment - just the idea that for the 30 days of April,
I'd ride some distance every day, even if it was just around the block.

Last month, like a lot of folks in this region, I got crushed by a nasty flu
that had me off the bike for three weeks and pretty weak for a couple more.
It got me thinking a bit, making me realize how easy it can be sometimes to
take for granted the wonderous act of spinning a pedal, even if it's a
wind-assisted roll at a lazy pace.

Sometimes I've raced, sometimes I've aimed for a long distance number,
sometimes I've loafed along and enjoyed the sun, hunkered down and cursed
the wind or just tried to hang on until momentum rejoined me. But, they all
now are memories which I appreciate and even relish.

Biking is good, and even though we all find a myriad of ways to slice and
dice, dissect and intellectualize it, the act of riding seems to always pay

Gonna have to roll out short today - ended up with a chunk more on the
weekend task list than I'd planned, but the hum of the tires and the action
of the legs will sustain me after I've returned.

And a big thanks to Harry H, whose post reminded me to do this.

[RBW] Cupcake Failure Ride.

2011-03-06 Thread manueljohnacosta
Another brief sunny day in the Bay Area and what better way to enjoy
it then to get a wheel rebuild! To bad I lack the parts and the
knowledge to relacing a rear wheel. So I had two options; grab the
parts I needed and get the wheel rebuilt at a local bike shop or go
the RBW headquarters and have Rich work his magic. I figured it would
be a better use of my time to ride to Rivendell with the lady friend.
Kill two birds with one stone! Since my bike was required to stay I
needed a back-up plan so I brought my skateboard along for the ride.
My lady friend is some what of a cupcake connoisseur so she wanted to
bike from the closest cupcake place to Rivendell. While she got her
cupcakes I got to visit one of my favorite places in the Bay Area.
While I was there I got to sneak a peak at the Blue-grayish Hillborne
that is up for auction, very beautiful color by the way. Also snagged
some pictures of a double-top tube Soma San Marcos. It was a bitter
sweet visit because I had to leave my beloved Bleirot at the shop.
They say necessity is the mother of all invention, I say it's true.
Since I had to ride back on my skateboard I had to convert my
Sackville bag into a backpack! Riding seven miles on a bike seems easy
to some but skateboarding those seven miles back can be exhausting.
All in all a great ride until the end when taking the cupcakes out of
her basket she drops the box, leaving only a mess of frosting and
cake. Cupcake failures still make it a memorable experience. At least
I got what I wanted.

Pictures proved it happen:

I don’t see this one offered on their website anymore.  I never did

These are no longer made and difficult to find.   This was purchased

100 miles and show some chain shift scratches on the inside of the
larger chain ring.  Otherwise, they still shine.  No wear on the teeth
can be seen.  I swapped this out for a triple, so I no longer need
 this set.

 5)  TA Axix steel BB, Italian thread, 116 mm width.  Only 100 miles
use.  It was used for the above mentioned crank set. $50

Shipping to lower 48 US states is included.  Open to offers, if I'm

Great Story!

On Feb 26, 9:33 pm, J L subfas...@gmail.com wrote:
I think every bike has a story and a Rivendell has a special quality that
not many other bicycles have: they take on the character of their owners.
Really, it is like the bicycles develop a life of their own after a while.
Here is a brief story, followed by photos, of one of my Rivendells: a 1996
road standard.  My hope is that this post will inspire others to detail
their setups and bicycle back stories.

I bought the bike as a Frame/Fork plus extras a few years ago.  It was
disappointing at first to find out that this model, which uses 49mm brake
reach, does not allow a true 28mm tire plus fender to fit.  What seemed like
a set back ended up being a large influence on the build of the bicycle.
Initially I used a wheel set made up of Chris King hubs built with bladed
spokes along with a Ritchey compact double crankset and other assorted
parts.  The gearing was too low on the 110bcd cranks and the hubs were too
loud. I knew I needed to change things up.  After looking around a bit and
scouring my parts bin I came across the Dura Ace parts that are on the
bicycle now.  I had 9 speed Dura Ace brake/shifters on for a while but found
that they fail too easily and are expensive to replace.  I went back to
friction shifting with the help of some Suntour Sprint DT shifters.  Finally
everything was cohesive on the bicycle and it felt more stable, fast, and
 fun than ever.

Here is the current set up, because I know we all like the tiny details.
I expect it will stay this way for a while:

1996 Road Standard, stock blue color 54cm
 Headset - Shimano 600
 Stem - Nitto Pearl 10cm
 Bars - Nitto Noodle 44cm
 Brake levers - Shimano 105
 Shifters - Suntour Sprint DT
Brakes -Dura Ace 7700 -kool stop pads on front
 Cranks  -Dura Ace 7700 -170mm
 Chainrings - Sugino 48t, Dura Ace 39t
 Pedals - dual sided SPD
Wheels - 28h Dura ace 7700 to Mavic CXP-30 rims
Front Derailer - Dura Ace 7800
Rear Derailer - Dura Ace 7700 triple
 Cassette - 9 speed 11-32
 Seat post - I don't remember.
Seat - Cheap flexy sport seat
 Seat bag - Timbuk2
 Pump - Zefal frame pump
Tires - Panaracer Pasela TG 700x28c
Bottle Cage - Stainless King Kage

On January 17 of 2010, I had a slight misfortune, but in the end,
was very lucky. I was hit by a car while riding and got a

taken in an ambulance due to losing consciousness, but my injuries
were the kind that could heal on their own. A week or so after the
accident, I got some nice words and a bit of advice from some people
on this list, and I am thankful for that. It was a bad experience
the day it happened, but afterwards, I learned a lot and gained
appreciation for the good things in my life. This list is one of
  those things.

About 11 months ago, I began a process of replacing the bike that
was in the accident, my green Quickbeam with a working front
derailleur (see it in RR#36). The replacement frame was going to be
an orange Quickbeam, but since I was so set on finding a way to add
even more gears via an internal hub in the buildup process, I
finally realized that the replacement frame needed to be a Hillborne
for this bike’s purposes. Patrick Moore, I was asking this list for
advice a few months ago about adding rear gears to the Quickbeam,
and your advice which was, “Why not use one of the frame models that
is made for gears?” , helped to set me straight.

So, at the risk of overdramatizing the accident, below is the
phoenix that rose from the ashes. My Hunqafied Hillborne with
sidepulls. It has the low gears that I would usually miss on my QB:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/46035786@N07/sets/72157625850005210/

  Favorite features:

Gearing is the best: 24-36-46 Sugino with Shimano 12-36 rear.

Bruce Gordon Rock and Road 700x40 tires. Tread makes them good for
  pavement and dirt.

  Bullmoose Bars with Ergon Grips

Paul Mounts with 9 speed Shimano indexed

Silver sidepulls. I’ve always liked these. Really like them with
  mountain levers

Mini-rack mounts available and use of mini in front and full rack in
  the rear.

I LOVE this bike. And I’ve owned a few nice bikes. This one snuck up
on all the rest and has caused them to sit idle. I finished setting
up this Hillborne on Tuesday January 4th, and I’ve only ridden this
bike since. Since setting it up, I have ridden it to work every day.
Tomorrow should be 10 days consecutive, and I see no reason why this
week won’t bring the steak to 13. I also plan to ride this bike in
San Diego in February with the group.

I used to think a drop bar road bike set up with Jack Browns for
country riding was the perfect bike, but this Hillhunqer is causing
me to question that. It's also neat how it just sort of happened.
The assembly was extremely fast once I saw it in my head. The build
wasn't what I had originally planned, but I think reading this list
influenced my instincts, and it just sort of came to me without
  feeling like I planned it.

The bike rides really nice. It's really stable, and I feel
comfortable. The big tires are the best. I probably ride it slower
than I do the road country bikes, but if that is true, I like it,
because it feels like I am savoring the bike. I get up looking
  forward to riding it.

  Thanks for reading.

My father works construction part time and I'm usually the tool boy to

figured I could save some time and money if I just get the tools or

At the beginning of last year I needed a basket for a quick run to do
some errands. The basket in the front was only suppose to be temporary
and the zip-ties where only suppose to be on for a day. It's now been
one year. I'll get to the black zip-ties soon enough...maybe next
year.

was great!  Toward the end I detoured onto a local trail (Carraige trail for

The trail has been there for over 100 years, so this was definitely a

About a two miles out from home, there was a cyclist sitting by his bike
staring at the back tire which was quite flat.  Asked if he needed help and
he jumped up saying Yes!  A couple other cyclists had already passed him.
He had a CO2 cartridge but no head unit for it.  They're not too much good
without one it seems.  I pumped up his tire while extolling the virtues of
tire pumps.  May have made a convert, who knows :-)

So great weather, great riding, great bike, great tailwind, viewed storm

[RBW] Re: Any Tandems?

2010-11-11 Thread manueljohnacosta
Thanks for all the advice!
Great thing about this whole experience is that my girlfriend actually
wouldn't mind buying a tandem with me. So this might be in the near
future if we can find a used tandem our size or if Rivendell puts up
plans on making a tandem. Ultimately our goal is to go on a bike tour
together so plans on getting a tandem that not only has rack braze ons
but also is portable led me to this nifty tandem folder from Bike
Friday.

http://community.bikefriday.com/twosday?styleId=0

Does any one have any experience with this tandem?
Also as a added bonus here was pictures of said ride. Our previous
experiences riding together ended up with us being very disconnected
because our different riding styles. I was either too bored of the
pace that we were going or the route would be too hard for her.
Previous attempts of riding together ended up in disaster when we
both fell trying to ride while holding hands ( We thought it was a
good idea at the time). So knowing that cycling was something we both
enjoyed but was hard to compromise we decided to rent a tandem. So off
we went to the city to rent a tandem bike from Blazing Saddles. Their
service was outstanding even if it seemed a little corny. Explaining
us the route and safety concerns like we weren't from there already.
The first few minutes of riding was shaking but once we got a hang of
it we started to have some fun. Our riding and our communication
seemed more in-sync and we both got to enjoy the beauty of riding
together. She enjoyed it so much that she wanted to try renting out
another one again.

Pictures proved that it happen.

[RBW] Re: Headlands Ride Report 10.11.10

Thanks for the ride report Lee. I really like your set up been
thinking of making a bike with the same handlebar/brake combo set up.
Hows it ride for you? Any advantage or disadvantages over having drop

On Oct 13, 11:08 am, Lee leec...@gmail.com wrote:
Hi Anne. I'm no great bike handler, but here is what I ride. The
Quickbeam is a 650B conversion. So far, I've used the 32mm Nifty
Swiftys with the lightly-treaded checkerboard pattern. I had trouble
with them in terms of traction on some steep upward pitches. I had
them at about 50-55 last time I rode these trails.

I've used Col de la Vies on a few different bikes in the Headlands and
these worked very well. They measure out to about 35.555etc. mm
and have good, deep oval-shaped treads. Normally, I run them at 60-65
psi on my commute. On the trails, I set them to about 55-60. Less
would probably help both with traction and to provide float on the
 deeper, sandy stuff.

Speaking of deep, sandy stuff, that is the main issue I have with
trail riding. On climbs, I can spin out when I hit such a patch,
particularly on the one speed. So, I try to pick a decent line and
hunker my butt down on the back edge of the saddle when cranking
through it, as recommended to me on my last mixed terrain ride report.

On descents, I get a little leary of the slip-and-slide action as I
pass through the wash. So again, I try to pick a decent line, dampen
my speed some before hitting the patch. Then, let loose the brakes and
try to keep my line as straight as possible as I forge my way through
the deep stuff. Overall, though, I'm a pretty slow descender on
 trails.

Again, I'm a newb to this type of riding and I'm sure there are a lot
of smart techniques out there that folks have developed, if anyone
 wants to chime in here.

My Col de la Vies have given out, so I'm thinking about the new Soma
650B tires, which are ~38mm equivalents of your Paselas (at least
superficially). I'm interested in seeing how they do on those trails.
Plus, they are a little bit lighter than the Col de la Vies. I know, I
know, it's all about the engine. But this engine welcomes any help it
 can get!

 Best,
 Lee

Last Saturday the Venturing Crew participated in the 18th annual

the trip we had two training ride one which end with rain. Most of the
training ride were quick rides to Alum Rock and back. That Saturday we

related issue early during the ride. The unexpected happened and one

parts that they needed and finished the ride. Everyone made it back

[RBW] Re: Garage Sale - Nigel Smythe Country Bag repair / upgrade

On Oct 3, 8:29 pm, Seth Vidal skvi...@gmail.com wrote:
On Sun, Oct 3, 2010 at 8:33 PM, Reed Kennedy r...@notfine.com wrote:
One of the more wonderful items available at yesterday's Rivendell garage
sale were Nigel Smythe Country Bags.
Apparently the first run of these bags had the saddle rail straps and
support dowel quite far back, on the flap of the bag rather than the
  enclosed body.
As a result of this, the bag hangs slightly oddly, especially when loaded:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/249889284/
(Not my bag or my photo, credit to Gino.)
The fine folks at Rivendell decided this was unacceptable and declined to
release the bags to the public. The official solution was to comission a
second run of bags with the dowel and saddle straps moved forward, off the
  flap.
Yesterday at the garage sale folks were given the opportunity to purchase
the original, slightly flawed bags for only $30. Many were available, and I
think nearly every person there left with one.
Most of the folks I spoke to were entirely untroubled by the way the bags
hang, and planned to simply use them. This was originally my intention as
well, but on the way home I remembered that I own some leatherworking
  supplies.
So I decided to see what I could do.
In the end, I decided to sew the flap down an extra inch so that the
dowl-and-seat-strap portion would be fully supported:
 http://notfine.com/pics/nigel_smythe_country_bag_upgrade/2-in_progres...
  It worked pretty well!
 http://notfine.com/pics/nigel_smythe_country_bag_upgrade/3-after.JPG
  (Compare to Gino's picture above.)
Unless you look very closely, you can hardly tell the bag has been modified:
 http://notfine.com/pics/nigel_smythe_country_bag_upgrade/4-close-up-o...
 http://notfine.com/pics/nigel_smythe_country_bag_upgrade/5-close-up-t...
The only downside that I can see is that the opening is now slightly
  smaller:
 http://notfine.com/pics/nigel_smythe_country_bag_upgrade/6-smaller-op...
However, given where it sits relative to my saddle I don't think it could
open much more anyway while on the bike:
 http://notfine.com/pics/nigel_smythe_country_bag_upgrade/7-smaller-op...
All in all, I'm very happy with this bag and with my modification. Thanks to
the wonderful folks at Rivendell for the generous deals on such lovely
objects, and also for a idyllic ride.
  Cheers,
  Reed

Wow, well done - that's a fantastic and beautiful fix.

 The bag looks great.

 Looks good too.

I've also used them to tie down some clothes while it dries on the

Actually, I've already used the actual swiss army knife to fix a

And we haven't even started camping yet.

[RBW] Re: Trangia experiments

2010-08-11 Thread manueljohnacosta
Awesome review Anne!
I must also vouch for trangia. I've taken it on a couple of
backpacking trips with my boyscout troop and it would work well for
the amount of people we were cooking for. Those pancakes and biscuits
sound awesome. Might have to try that on one of the overnight trips we
do.
-Manny

On Aug 11, 9:19 pm, Anne Paulson anne.paul...@gmail.com wrote:
I recently bought a Trangia stove with the pot and frying pan set.
Rivendell sells this fine product and recommends it for campouts.
Based on my recent experimentation, I concur.  Here's a report on my
 experiments:

Water for a cup of tea boils quickly. I didn't time it, but something
like four or five minutes, perfectly fine for a camping breakfast or
for an afternoon warmup on a long cold ride. And unlike my MSR white
gas stove which roars like a freight train, the Trangia is completely
 silent.

But what about actual food?  I tried pancakes, made with Krusteaz
buttermilk pancake mix, on a sub-24. I brought along some Krusteaz in
a ziplock. At the campsite, I mixed it with enough water to make a
pourable batter, just stirring so that most but not all the lumps were
gone (why yes, I do bring along a wire whisk when camping, why do you
ask?). I used the Trangia without the simmer ring; pancakes cook
fairly quickly. I made two or three little pancakes in the frying pan
at a time, turning them over when the bubbles popped. Results:
Delicious. I spread them with Nutella.

Emboldened, I moved on to a biscuit. For this, I used a homemade mix
of 1 cup flour, 1/4 cup powdered milk,  1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4
teaspoon salt,1 tablespoon Crisco. I mixed the dry ingredients
together, then cut the Crisco in using two knives. (If I made a bigger
batch, I'd mix in the Crisco in the food processor with six or eight
quick pulses.) I took about 1/3 cup of the mix, and mixed in just
enough water to make a stiff dough. I formed it into a biscuit-shaped
round about half an inch thick, and cooked it in a lightly greased
frying pan, covered with a makeshift aluminum-foil lid. I had to
experiment with the simmer ring setting. The first time, I had it set
in the completely open position, but that resulted in burned outsides
and gummy insides. The simmer ring about half covered worked better. I
cooked it about eight minutes on the first side, turned it over, and
cooked it around five minutes on the second side. Result: delicious. I
was home this time, so I put on butter and honey, but a biscuit like
this would be good with dinner too.

The biscuit mix would work well for pancakes too-- just add an egg if
you have one, plus enough water to make a pourable batter and maybe a
bit of sugar if you happen to have any. Then cook and enjoy.

The small cookset, which is what I have, is really only adequate for
one. I was able to boil spaghetti for one (about 1/6 lb) successfully,
but when I tried spaghetti for two there wasn't enough room in the pot
for the noodles plus the water to cook them. For two people, I
recommend the bigger cookset. Cooking for a group of four or more, I
 recommend a gas stove.

Here's the recommendation: If you do sub24s, buy a Trangia. They're
simple, they're light, the whole cookset packs up in one neat small
package*, they burn HEET**  and denatured alcohol***, both readily
 available.

 * The Trangia comes with a screwtop so that if there is still fuel in
the stove when you're finished cooking, you can snuff it out, let it
cool down, then screw on the lid. However, unfortunately, you can't
transport the stove (say, in your panniers) with alcohol in it,
because it will leak, even with the screw top. I emailed Trangia to
ask, and that's what they told me. So use up all your fuel in the
 morning.

** HEET in the yellow container. The red container HEET is the wrong stuff.

*** but do not buy Sunnyside brand denatured alcohol, the house brand
of Tru Value hardware stores. It smokes.

[RBW] Bike tour From Santa Barbara to San Diego

2010-07-30 Thread manueljohnacosta
Just got back from a tour. Many things learned, lots of things seen,
reflected on the important things.
My second long bike tour, I felt much better about this one than last
years, more because it was causal, nothing really planned out just
kinda going. Didn't really train for this tour but I wasn't planning
to go fast anyway.

First day I took the train to Santa Barbara to meet with my buddy Duy.
As I get off the train I meet one of many bike tourers going in the
same direction. After some friendly nods, we take a short ride down to
Carpinteria State beach and got dinner ready. That night we got to
meet a ton of people touring down the coast. We met a father and son
on a tandem on a quick overnighter, a retired guy riding his way up
north, a young guy riding solo from seattle who went by Ezra and we
also caught up with the traveler from the train who went by Jean-
Pierre, who was riding from Toronto down to Mexico. We all eat our
meals, share our stories and tried sleeping with the amtrak roaring
through at 1am in the morning.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mannyacosta/sets/72157624607224862/
--

The second day we said our good byes, wished each other a safe journey
and rode down to Leo Carrillo. When we get there we were surprised to
see Ezra at the campsite before us, we greeted one another and hanged
out on the beach, played some frisbee, and got washed up by the waves.
Ezra rode with Jean-Pierre, but Jean-Pierre decided to ride further
down to LA. As we finished our meal we are greeted by two buddies
riding super late into the campsite. These guys brought the party; one
iron skillet, a huge dutch oven and a ton a of beer. We offered our
fire and they cooked and shared some grade A lamb. We slept that nice
with good food in a belly and great people to talk to.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mannyacosta/sets/72157624607372192/
--

The third day we ride into LA early, since my buddy Duy hasn't ridden
in a bit we decided to take really slow so we try to go early. Along
the way we pass Ezra and Ezra passes us it becomes kinda like a yo-yo
all the way till we reach Vince Beach. Along the way I learn that Ezra
just finished college with an Architect Major and is moving to Oakland
to find a job. We promise to go riding next time we're both in the
East Bay. Riding through L.A. Duy would always tell me that the
drivers are crazy and cyclist risk their lives riding on the streets.
I always figured that Duy was a big complainer, so I took the lead. As
I was telling him that riding in L.A. wasn't so bad a guy gets out of
his car and almost doors me. I guess I was wrong. We finish the day at
Duy's apartment drinking milk teas poolside and eating at the famous
Gloria's downtown.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mannyacosta/sets/72157624488433817/
--

The fourth day I had to ride the rest of the way solo so Duy offered
to take me a few miles closer from his school UCLA. It took me a while
to figure out how to get out of East L.A. but after being chased by
some stray dogs I find my way along the San Gabriel bike trial. I took
the trail all the way to Seal beach and rode the rest of the way along
the highway 1, passing by Huntington Beach, Laguna beach finally
stopping at Doheny State Beach. Using the left over pasta I had I
cooked some mean Alfredo sausage pasta. I even shared it we some
fellow hikers who were hiking up toe Santa Barbara to find some work.
I shared my meal and their shared their lives. One of the fellows left
his hometown of Ohio with nothing more than 500 dollars to California.
He has only 80 dollars left but for the things he experienced he
wouldn't change a thing. Despite their freedom they learn life's
problems the hard way and they made me put my trip into perspective.
Where I was doing a long journey trip for leisure, they were doing
their long journey trip to live. It made me really grateful for what I
had and I was more the happy to share what little food I had with
them.

The fifth day I took off early because I was on a mission to visit
Velo Cult in San Diego. I rode my way down to UC San Diego to meet up
with my triathlon buddy, Nick. Figuring that I just rode 60+ miles to
UCSD Nick took me on his training route on through some small hills
on Genesse road. On our way downtown I get pull over by a bike
mechanic named Mark from Quality Bicycles asking about my trip and for
some tips since he was planning he's first tour. After getting lost a
number of times we finally reach Velo Cult. great looking bikes and

I'm for one to never wear things from places if I don't have any type
of affixation with that certain product or place. For example, I never

[RBW] Rivendell brings generations of cyclist together!

2010-07-22 Thread manueljohnacosta
Before my trip to San Diego(previously Tijuana but at Grant's
suggestion changed to San Diego) I had a good conversation with my
good friends dad, Dave about bike culture. After looking at my bike
and riding it around he fell in love with the feel and the looks. He
talked about how the bike reminded him about the bikes he used to ride
all the time back in the days. He said my bike looked like the old
school style bikes but rode a lot better. So when I told him about the
shop and it's attitude towards bikes he was excited enough to ride
with me to visit it. So we rode to the shop from San Leandro and all
along the way we swapped stories of past rides we did. Despite us
being generations apart we shared a connection about biking and it's
functionally and beauty. We got to the shop and he instantly fell in
love with the place. The low-hassle/no pressure selling, the beautiful
ascetics of the bikes, and the general feel of the place. He was
surprised to find the old rack that he used when he was younger and
bought a bag to go with it. Grant also showed me a beautiful green
RenoVelo that used to be a custom fixed gear bike. He improved the
frame by adding more braze ons for racks and fenders and he's planning
to make it into a single speed, sadly as nice as it is it was no where
near my size. He also got my to try a cowboy shirt. I am no cowboy, as
much as Grant says that I look like one, but the shirt looked pretty
darn good, and plenty functional. The buttons work nicely and there's
a pen opening for the front pocket.Sadly because of the school that I
work at I'm not able to wear red or blue so I told Grant that when the
next shipment comes in I'll buy one, I did buy a pair of all black
Musa shorts. We finished the ride having lunch at Tullio's next door
and when we got back to our bikes one of the workers put Dave's rack
on for free! At the end of the trip Dave also gave me a copy of his
book Mill Valley Memories. He was nice enough to write this in the
front cover,

For Manny, who is keeping the very best traditions of bicycling
alive! Thanks for the ride! -Dave

As much as this message mean to me I really think this should go to
Rivendell. So thanks goes to Rivendell, and thank you Grant for
keeping the very best traditions of bicycling alive and bring
generations of bicyclist together!

[RBW] Rivendell as a beater bike?

2010-07-17 Thread manueljohnacosta
Grant's new post intrigued some thoughts within my weary brain. Found
on the Rivendell site.

Now almost every bike abovet $300 has a shock fork and almost no bike
below a Surly is steel. Fuji has one. Raleigh has eleven. Raleigh's
slogan in the ancient days, way before mom and dad met, was The All-
Steel Bicycle, and I think Raleigh now is trying to recapture the
spirit, maybe.

It would be so easy to tig-weld a cheap bike that was Affordable Yet
Fully Wholeheartedly Endorseable, but we're locked in to lugs, and
it's staying that way. Over the years we've talked a little about
making a Super Cheap with lugs, but the lower limit isn't all that
low, because the labor is so much more intensive.

It makes some sense, though. Everybody needs a beater and too many
people are afraid to make their Rivbike into the bike they can lock
outside the movie theater or bookstore for a few hours. I'm thinking
of a way to do it, and it's not looking likely, but it's not been
ruled out yet, either, and it's not a front-burner project. I will get
to it if at all in many moons.

I for one love my bleriot. The ride and the functionally has far
surpassed my expectations. I make it my bike to do anything with,
short of fast road rides( more because I'm not strong enough and I'm
too stubborn to leave the carradice bag at home). Over the course of a
half of year after owning my bleriot this bike has turned into some
what a beater in a sense that I don't mind leaving it outside out at
a farmers market locked with an irish strap. My nicks and scratches
have far pass the point of beasuage and the low model campy components
aren't holding up well because of the abused/misuse. But I don't feel
bad for that I'm using the bike for it's purposes despite being a
covet Rivendell Bike. Just curious of how others treat their
rivendells? Are they really used to their full potential? Or locked
away shameless in the garage because of their face value?

Last Rivendell one was the green with maroon band.   Everytime I wear that,
it inevitably gets positive comments.  One of the really non-standard and
beautiful color combos which Riv came up with.  To my eye, it has a really
 timeless quality.

My old blue one has a hole in the chest area I need to mend.

[RBW] Venturing Crew 999 S240

2010-05-17 Thread manueljohnacosta
Venturing Crew 999 went on an overnight/biking trip to Grant Ranch.
Some arrived by car, others by bike. Those crazy enough to biked with
me to Grant Ranch climbed over 1000 feet of elevation over San Jose.
They were constantly lied too about how much further it was till we
descended, not because I wanted to give them false hope, but because I
totally forgot how long the road was. Mr.Smith and Mrs. Salcedo drove
the rest of the venturers to set up camp ahead of us. At camp we had
burgers, hot dogs, pork meat balls and the classic camping food of all
time, Balut! For those not familiar, Balut is a Filipino dish, which
is basically fetal duck egg. The next day the crew took shuttle runs
to the top of Mt. Hamiliton and rode bikes down from the top with
Mr.Taube and Mr.Smith. For those biking down 4000+ feet of elevation
topping over 30+ mph they needed nerves of steel and amazing
coordination to make it down in one piece. On the way back home those
daring went with on a mountain biking trail back to LCPA with me.
Starting from the park entrance I took them up Halls Valley Trail,
then taking Washburn Trail down. Plenty of climbing and bumpy
descents, mixed in with a couple of spills made it a life changing
moment for the three young men that joined me. Despite the big focus
on biking, it was more of a bonding experience for themselves, to see
how much they can push their bodies and minds to that limit and to go
further. This is the type of learning that can't be taught in a
classroom!Congrats and thanks goes to all the advisors and venturers
who made the trip amazing! Also big thanks to Mr.Rodriguez, Mr.Smith
and Cycles of Change for loaning bikes for the trip!

rolling and bumpilous fire trails and with an option of a longer route
going through redwood road. Food option at the end would be Main
Streets Bagels which is super close by there. I was thinking of
meeting at San Leandro Bart around 2ish and be done around 6ish. If
anyone is interested let me know. Pictures of the trail can be found

thanks to Cycles of Change I was able to find the long straddle cable
for the rear brake. Presented the bike to my girlfriend and she likes
it. She wants to put a hello kitty sticker on it, I want to put
Resurrectio Decals. But for now the bike is semi done. Just needs a

[RBW] Pink Mixte Le tour Project..

2010-04-22 Thread manueljohnacosta
I was lucky to get in possession of a 49cm Le Tour Mixte. I figured
since my girlfriend just recently got a new job, new place, graduated
from college and her birthday was coming up, I figured I should get
her something big. Pink is her favorite color and she enjoys biking.
So I set off building her a bike. Getting most of the parts together I
find myself with a few issues.
1. Big issue the brakes seem like they are only a few centimeters off.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mannyacosta/4545155110/in/set-72157623789349209/

2. The rear brake is a center-pull and needs a longer straddle cable
to clear the seat tube.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mannyacosta/4544523125/in/set-72157623789349209/

So with the first issue I go to the ROB group for some answers. Any
ideas of making this work? It's SOOO close to fitting. Or should I
just bite the bullet and look for brakes that fit?

and about the second issue. Anyone have any ideas and where I can find
one? I might check out my local place, Cycle of Change, but never
guaranteed that I can find the part there. Thanks in advance!
Hopefully I can get this worked out.

[RBW] Re: Henry Coe Ride Report

2010-04-19 Thread manueljohnacosta
Awesome glad you made the trip work for you. looks like you had an
adventure!

On Apr 19, 9:26 pm, Adam oceanm...@gmail.com wrote:
 Henry Coe Ride Report

I logged on a few weeks ago and asked the listserv about experiences
of Henry W. Coe Park.  Got some great reports that fueled my
 excitement.

It’s the biggest state run park in Northern California, 87,000 acres
of open space.  Certain parts are closed to cyclists though it is
recognized as some of the best mountain biking in the greater bay
 area.

Almost everyone I spoke to warned of the almost vertical climbs and
descents.  Even riders who I thought were in the same club suggested
 full suspension.

My buddy Todd and I had planned an early morning departure last Monday
but delayed until about 6pm to avoid riding in the rain.  We departed
from Berkeley and arrived in Briones about an hour after dark.  We
rode a fire road out from the park entrance about a mile and pushed up
an extremely steep and muddy hill.  This short ascent proved to be one
of the most challenging moments of the trip.

Todd spent the night a bit cold, and we were both soaked from the tall
grasses we’d be tromping through.  In the morning we were considering
heading back home so he could pick up his thicker sleeping bag when
alas I remembered stories of the VBL.  Todd and I rode out to Walnut
Creek to the headquarters.  We both picked up some “Vapor Barrier
Liners” and we agreed our dollars could not have been better spent.
We went from wearing our down jackets inside our bags and shivering
through the night to ditching the jackets and feeling more than cozy.
Pretty incredible results for such a packable and inexpensive item.

Grant and Mark gave us directions from Walnut Creek out to Livermore
where Todd grew up.  They seemed a bit doubtful about our ambitious
journey but gave us some uplifting encouragement.

We made it out for sandwiches and tea with Todd’s parents and then a
good 10 miles into Mines Rd. before sunset.  We found a lovely
campsite on an unknowingly generous landowners’ space.  It felt
incredibly remote for being just 10 miles out of Livermore.

The next day we continued along Mines Rd. until a welcomed stop at the
Junction Café.  It’s located at the junction of Mines Rd. and Hwy 138
and is of a different world.  Giant Boar heads over the bar with
mangled tusks, not a single guy without a camouflage baseball cap.
Wonderful people, we felt warmly welcomed, humored perhaps.  Had too
much to eat and drink for our adventurous spirits and enjoyed some
good games of horseshoe outside the restaurant.

We departed from Mines Rd. soon after unto some private land for a
mile or so and then into the beauty of Henry Coe.  We spent 1 night
and 2 full days in the park.  Riding and pushing, pushing and riding.
I’d say our time was about 50/50 between the 2.  We crossed a dozen or
so rivers and felt lost in the isolated beauty.

From the park we rode down through Gilroy and into Downtown San Jose

[RBW] Re: 3 Capes 300k

wow the route looks amazing! Thanks for the pictures

On Apr 11, 9:38 am, Mike mjawn...@gmail.com wrote:
 Here's some pictures from yesterday's 3 capes 300k. I rode my Hilsen
for the second year in a row and it performed flawlessly although not
quietly. My rear derailer and rear fender were making some odd noises
at times. I'll try and figure out what's going on later this week. The
Jack Brown greens are great and I like them much more than the blues.

The highlight of the ride for me was the first 100k which we covered
pretty fast. This includes summating and descending the coast range.
We had an amazing tailwind which pushed us up the climb. There was ice
on the road for the beginning of the descent but minimal traffic so we
just took the lane and bombed down for the first couple of miles of
the descent until it mellowed out. There was quite a large group of us
descending and it was exhilarating. The tailwind pushed us right into
to Tillamook and out to the beginning of the Cape Meares climb.

I love this ride and I love the distance. It was my third year doing
the ride. I had been hoping to finish in just under 13hrs but dawdled
a little too much at some of the controls. Perhaps next year. Still, I
finished with a solid time fo 13hrs 48min. My company for the ride was
great. It was just a really good time.

I was bummed my point and shoot digital camera crapped out. The climb
up Hwy 6 to the summit of the coast range was pretty cold. Right as I
took my camera out to get a shot of the summit sign the camera froze
up. Bummer. It's a lot easier to take pictures with that than it is
with my camera phone (Motorala droid).

 Here's some
 pictures:http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335...@n00/sets/72157623831454890/

It's dry out now and in spite of feeling a little fatigued I'm think I
might head out for a little 30 mile or so jaunt around Sauvie Island.

[RBW] Re: S24O for a complete newbie!

2010-04-08 Thread manueljohnacosta
Might I suggest a sleeping bag liner if your not planning to wear
something woolish when going to bed. The nights can be a little chilly
and a sleeping bag liner can keep you warm and keep your sleeping bag
from getting dirty. Dress in layers helps solve most issues with
warmth, but not all issues.

As for something to do, after setting up camp you'll have plenty of
time before it gets dark, so hiking around the area and finding
something interesting to see. If China Hole allows camp fires you and
your son can collect fire wood and build a fire. Warmth is so
underrated when it comes to sleeping outside that you'll be glad to
have a fire to look at near the end of the day. Also bring smores!
Those always becomes a sticky and fun mess when eating outdoors. Have
fun hope you bring a camera to capture the memories the weather should
be amazing!

-Manny

On Apr 8, 2:17 am, Rene Sterental orthie...@gmail.com wrote:
I'm going to do my very first S24O in China Camp (Marin county, CA) on the
weekend of May 8 - 9 with my 11 year old son. I have absolutely no
experience and the only camping I did years ago (too many...) was in the
beach in Venezuela where we would bring everything by car/boat.

I chose China Camp because I already know the place, know the trails, and
feel that if it doesn't work out, we're quite close to the car. I have
purchased a 2 person REI Quarter Dome tent, but I'm wondering if a 3 person
tent would be a better choice if we want to invite someone along. I also got
a pair of Big Agnes Lost Dog (rated 50 deg) sleeping bags with their
respective air matresses. I'm planning to use my Bombadil to bike from the
main parking lot (at one end of the Shoreline Trail) by the Fishing Village
to the campgrounds (at the other end). It's about 5 miles or so, so it won't
be a disaster if I make mistakes. It's also a good manageable distance for
 my son.

Here is my list of questions... :-)

 1.- What else do I need to bring? At this time, I'm not planning to cook;
we'll just bring sandwiches and water in bottles and our Camelbaks. I'm
leaving the logistics of cooking/warm food for another time.

2.- How should I pack? I'll have to carry all the stuff for both of us as my
son's Specialized 29er cannot carry anything. He'll have his small Camelbak,
but that's about it. I do have the medium and huge front baskets with their
respective medium and large sackville bags. I also have a medium sackville
saddlebag. I can mount the Nitto rear pannier rack, but all I currently have
is a pair of the small Ortlieb panniers I used to commute with a few years
ago. Budget-wise, at most I might be able to get the large sackville
saddlebag, or a set of rear panniers.

I don't think I'll be doing anything beyond the S24Os this year; but I do
want to do them on a regular basis. I have no idea what will happen or what
we'll do once we've set up camp, but I'm looking forward to discovering this
 new dimension.

Please feel free to give me all the advice you think I'll need, and even
advice you think I may not... you never know. If you want to e-mail me
off-list, feel free to do so. As was incredibly excited when I discovered
what an S24O was, shortly after I discovered RBW and got my bikes there late
last year. If I don't get started now, the whole inertia of work and
travelling for work will drag me down and by the time I realize it, another
year will have passed. It's been a recurring theme for me. My son is also
growing up relentlessly, so if I don't do it now, it might soon be too late.

Thanks again for all your support and guidance; I've certainly learned a lot
from all of you, and continue to do so...

 René

It looks like Arkel's GT-54 panniers offer the best of both worlds:
they have a dry sack integrated into the main compartment, which you
can either use or roll up so it is out of the way.  But they are
extremely expensive at $380.  I guess you could just buy a dry bag and
put it in a cheaper non-water proof pannier to get the same benefit.

Here's something I don't understand about the Ortliebs.  I would like
to get high visibility panniers, like the yellow Ortliebs.  However,
the back of the panniers is black. Why did Ortlieb do that instead of
making the whole thing high vis yellow?  That is one thing I like
about the Arkels: the whole pannier is red and there's lots of
 reflective striping.
